These classic recordings, from 1957 through 1970, feature the great baritone's ornate, debonair, and dramatic renditions of blues and ballads Williams's striking, rich tone and polish won him access to the star-studded big bands and combos here: those of Jimmy Jones, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis; Harry "Sweets" Edison, Horace Ott, and Jimmy Mundy; and, of course, the orchestra of his musical inspiration and mentor, Count Basie. The album starts out with "Everyday I Have the Blues," a Memphis Slim tune and 1950 Lowell Fulson hit that would become Williams's own signature tune, thanks to this version with Basie. Do you know an untasteful fruit among all the tasteful dozens of fruits Mr.Williams has legate to America and the world? Difficult to find 2 because I have found only one among the extensive list of Mr. Williams albums as coperformer and as main performer. Particularly about his Blue Note, Solid State output it is a pity that fans do not have all the material available. Particularly, Williams collaboration with the Thad Jones & Mel Lewis band is fantastic (a Solid State album). If you just want a fully representative Joe Williams album, buy it. If you are a fan, also buy it because there are some few great gems here.

This compilation of hits represent virtually the full spectrum of the talent of Joe Williams. His silky smooth handling of such ballads as "I was telling her about you" and "Cherry" harken back to his early days singing with Dinah Washington in Lionel Hampton's band. Other tunes, such as "Everyday I have the blues" and "If I were a bell" chronicle his ultra successful stint with the Basie band during the 1950's and 60's. Whether shouting the blues, or interpreting a timeless ballad, Joe Williams's clarity and emotion shines through every track.

Jazz is currently not served very well by today's crop of technically muscle-bound musicians. Many play "at" their audiences rather than tell us something we need to know. That's just one reason why the passing of Joe Williams at the end of March is a sad event. He was a master of ballads and a city-style blues shouter who ranked with the very, very best, such as Big Joe Turner. He was also a superb entertainer as anyone who saw him in a supper club will know. While the classic Verve CD "Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings" is an essential part of any jazz collection (no-one did more than Williams to revive the fortunes of the Count Basie Orchestra in the 1950s) this Blue Note CD is probably the best selection you can have of all his styles. And Joe is in fine, young voice throughout. It opens with a less familiar but roaring version of "Everyday I Have The Blues," continues with a few ballads such as "When Did You Leave Heaven?" and contains the great verson of "Goin' To Chicago" with Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. There is also plenty of Basie material including "Roll 'Em Pete." Make this your first or second choice Joe Williams record. You will never regret it.

Another Fan is Born.......2007-02-05

Like so many other reviewers here, I heard Megan for the first time when I saw her makeover on TLC's "What Not To Wear." I finally got around to buying this CD, and I'm really glad I did. Now I'm on a mission to turn my friends and family on to her. She reminds me of a cross between Shawn Colvin, Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, and Lisa Loeb. Okay, and some Avril Lavigne, if you insist... but I've never really cared for Avril, and I love Megan. More folksy and less rock than Avril, I think. If you like the music of any of the others I've mentioned, you will like this. When one of her songs comes up on my random play, I often mistakenly think that it's Shawn Colvin or Jewel. She sounds a lot like them, I think, only maybe a little edgier. A great big shout out to Stacy London and Clinton Kelly for bringing her to our attention, thank you!

Great CD.......2006-01-25

I just got this cd in the mail today. Its a little folksy mixed with blues. Very cool music. My favorite songs are Too Bad You and It's All My Fault. I got turned on to Megan from TLC's What Not To Wear. The only reason I rated it a 4 and not a 5 is because it seems each song is all over the place, as far as they pick up and then slow down and pick up and slow down. But this woman has an amazing voice, range, and the sounds she can make is awesome.

Megan's ability to make any word melodic is truly astounding. It is as if these words are her own language and the listener is enraptured in their presence. Her voice is able to put the observer in a trance, from which he/she does not wish to escape. She is a rare find, an artist who has unlimited resources within her psyche. It is truly remarkable when she fluctuates through an array of notes and pitches. Much can be said when one listens to a selection of songs by someone and is not tired, but desires more of these ethereal compositions.

Okay, so I'm usually bored by girly folk music. Seriously. But on a road trip, my friend put the CD in and I was like... wow this is fun. What a great voice, catchy tunes, clever lyrics. Also, not too angsty. Because that's really depressing. Some sad songs, some happy songs. Caught myself humming a tune at work today.

One very underappreciated artist.......2005-10-02

Megan has a unique, but still folky voice - and her style is like no other. She's a bit Sarah McLachlan, a bit Ani DiFranco, a bit Sheryl Crow - but a lot Megan. There's also first rate playing and non-trite lyrics.

Bay Area jazz saxophonist Patrick Cress and clarinetist Aaron Novik -- the dynamic front line of the Telepathy quartet -- draw their compositions from a broad palette while maintaining a unified vision. The 11 tracks on the group's third recording since 2002 cannily interweave melody and dissonance, soulful World Saxophone Quartet-style riffs and ambient abstraction, rock-solid grooves and free-breathing swing. The composers often dig deep into unusual time signatures, which give the music a lunging momentum on "State of Memory" and a serpentine dreaminess on "The Shadowboxer." While the song structures benefit from cohesive arrangements and lots of notes on the page, an equal measure of natural-sounding improv also shapes the music. The result is a multiplicity of voices -- including spoken word (Leonard Oakland's fine recitation of poet Theodore Roethke's haunting "My Papa's Waltz" on "BRandL"), otherworldly blues-spirit vocals (by Michelle Amador on "Descension Into Madness, Part 3"), and a stunning interpretation of a Satie ballad ("Gymnopedie 1") -- coming together in a single kaleidoscopic sound.
