It's a little hard to take Rod Stewart seriously when, on the first track of this third installment in his Great American Songbook series, he sings ruefully about his love life being "lean" ("Embraceable You"). But otherwise, Stardust...Volume III is as note-for-note solid as its predecessors--a cozy-up-to-the-fire treat that's also a pleasant reminder of these songs' staying power. "S'Wonderful" settles on the ears winningly, and Stewart's scratchathon voice scalpels the cobwebs off of "Isn't It Romantic" in a way that compels the average listener to reconsider thinking it dopey. In addition, the parade of high-wattage pals recruited to pitch in continues here, resulting in a couple of must-hear combinations. Eric Clapton delivers a rather un-Clapton-like guitar solo on "Blue Moon" and Stevie Wonder blows harp like he means it on "What a Wonderful World," but it is the duets--"Baby It's Cold Outside" with the unsinkable Dolly Parton and "Manhattan" with the indomitable Bette Midler--that the dazzle most. --Tammy La Gorce

I have played this cd over and over and enjoy it so much. It is wonderful for those of us who know those songs and just enjoy beautiful music. Just nice to hear lovely music once again.

5 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart Revisited.......2007-05-07

A nostalgic trip to the romantic past. Who would ever think Rod Stewart of "Hot Legs" fame could do such justice to these "Oldies but Goodies"?

There is only 1 ROD STEWART and this album WILL NOT DISAPPOINT his fans! AWESOME! TIMELESS!

1 out of 5 stars If works once - do it over and over and over...........2007-03-05

I really like this music! Truly! And I'm only 25... It scares me that the ones who are gonna open "my generation" to this music are Rod Stewart & Westlife!
The choices of songs are good and the orchastration on the firts 2 are more the okey. But his torn old tired voice over these beautiful musical settings just doesn't do them justice. And why bring in Dolly Parton & Cher? They're both fantastic singers but jazzsingers they're NOT!
Why buy this when there's an limitless world of original jazz singers/musicians to choose from? It's just beyond me!
If you still want someone contemporaray - stick to Natalie Cole, Madeleyne Peyroux or my favourite: Stacey Kent (check her out - you WONT regret it!!!)
Back to Rod: The last effort (number 4 in the series) was so hastily put together the tracklist isn't even correct. I could just see him: "Alright people! I have an hour to record this, so just gimme the mic so I can get back to chasing women! How many millions is this cd gonna make me?! Really!? Great! We'll make another next month! Just throw something together - they'll buy anything!"
No - stick to the originals people!

Willie Nelson has never been one to do the safe or expected, and this Booker T. Jones-produced album of pop standards from the '30s and '40s certainly fits the profile. It's also one of the better albums of Nelson's career, allowing Willie to dip his fragile, quivering tenor all around the beat in songs like "All of Me" and "Unchained Melody." Jones's organ, piano, and string arrangements are low-key and swinging (except on the almost wooden "On the Sunny Side of the Street"), and Nelson's vocals on "Georgia on My Mind" and "Moonlight in Vermont" are filled with a dignified and slightly jazzy country soul. The 1999 reissue adds a pair of bonus cuts to the mix, including the lullaby-like "Scarlet Ribbons" and the somewhat out-of-place "I Can See Clearly Now." --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars September Songs.......2007-06-05

In 1978, Columbia Records--the same label that had handed Bennett his walking papers six years earlier--took a gamble and released Willie Nelson's landmark tribute to the standards, Stardust, named in honor of Hoagy Carmichael's signature tune. Nelson, who had already written a few tunes that would become standards in their own right, set out to record the "songs I grew up with," arranged for a honky-tonk country ensemble.
"The fact that we did `Stardust,' `Georgia on My Mind,' `Moonlight in Vermont,' `Blue Skies' just opened up the possibilities of getting a wider audience to listen," said Nelson. "From the older people who remember these songs, to the ones who never heard them before...a great song is still a great song."

At the time, critics believed this little collection would be nothing more than a speed bump in Nelson's country career before he got back On the Road Again. Instead, it caught on like a hot Texas prairie fire, heating up Billboard's pop charts for 117 weeks and warming the country charts for almost ten years. To date, Stardust has sold over four million copies and continues to do brisk business.

Stardust is the one that started it all for me. More than a quarter century later, it still impresses me as much as when I first heard it as a teenager.

By the time Nelson recorded this landmark album, he was already a country-music legend. With a laid-back ensemble of country-music performers, Nelson brings his unadorned singing style to ten of the most accessible standards, from the title cut to another Hoagy Carmichael classic, "Georgia on My Mind," and Irving Berlin's optimistic "Blue Skies." His take on "The Sunny Side of the Street" captures the hopeful spirit of so many Depression-era songs that helped keep Americans' minds off the tough times.

But the pieces that work best here are the more sentimental favorites, like Kurt Weill's "September Song," "Moonlight in Vermont," and the Gershwins' "Someone to Watch Over Me." Nelson conjures quietly powerful images with his sincere storytelling. His love for these venerable melodies comes through on every track, mainly because of his understated knack of letting the music do most of the talking.

A great singer singing classic, timeless tunes. Can't get a better comination than that! I had purchased this 8-track tape back in the late 70s and had forgotten about how much I enjoyed it. Bought the CD from Amazon at a great price! This is not a country album but it is undeniably Willie Nelson-style. This is as laid back as an album can get. Beautiful in its own way.

Every song is presently well, the fidelity is just great. This is now one of my favorite CD's.

4 out of 5 stars (Move Over Georgia, I've Got...) LOUNGES ON MY MIND.......2007-01-29

In 1989, Girlfriend and I decided that we wanted to find a nice little lounge that we could call our own - a quiet place that we could slip away to from time to time and enjoy an adult beverage. A place where everyone would know our names, but they would mostly just bring to our table the things we asked for and then leave us alone. So we began the quest one evening, and the first place I suggested we sample was the intimate cocktail lounge located at the rear of THE CREST HOUSE RESTAURANT on Washington Boulevard in Culver City. We went there, and to two other places that night. Over the next couple of weeks, we visited several other drinking establishments in the Los Angeles area, and when the alcoholic haze finally settled in our minds, we found that nothing could compare with the very first place we'd tried.

So, THE CREST HOUSE lounge became our home away from home, and for years it was like an oasis of yesteryear in contemporary times. The quaint lounge featured a cozy little fireplace, nostalgic red booths, little twinkling Christmas lights year `round over the bar, a couple of televisions for the showing of Dodger games, and an ancient, reticent fixture at the end of the bar who Girlfriend and I referred to as "Mr. Doom" because he reminded us of the old gaunt ghost who sometimes hitched a ride with us in our "Doom Buggy" on the HAUNTED MANSION ride at Disneyland. And then there was that jukebox filled with great music from a variety of decades - most of it conducive to relaxation and gentle conversation about good times shared. Girlfriend and I gave that machine most of the exercise it got. (The geezers and geezerettes - God love `em - were forever complimenting us kiddies on our exquisite taste in music.) Our favorite selections were:

Moonlight Serenade (Glenn Miller); Boogie Woogie (Tommy Dorsey); I Wish You Love & That Old Black Magic (Louis Prima with Keely Smith); Desperado (The Eagles). And when I punched G5 and G6 on that old jukebox (which I frequently did) we got BLUE SKIES and MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT by Willie Nelson. Both of those lovely songs are found on this collection.

In 1978, Ol' Willie Nelson departed from his hometown, "Countryville", and with the great Booker T. Jones producing and arranging, he released STARDUST, an album of Pop standards. (If you're not familiar with Booker's old `60s band, BOOKER T. AND THE MG'S, you have missed out on some of the greatest dance music ever recorded. I mean, even Ol' Stephen T. can dance to Booker T., and I'm as White as Wonder bread!) Now the initial reaction one might have at the thought of Willie's nasal voice singing GEORGIA ON MY MIND is understandably, "What the--?!" That's got to be bad, right? Does a bear cr@p in the woods? Does a dog put out a fire...hydrant? Does a ghost haunt the building where I work? Well, the answer to the above questions is "yes" ... except for the first one.

Believe it or not, somehow Willie's schnozzy voice works perfectly with these mellifluous classics with their sparse but perfect instrumentation. (When Ol' Waylon used to sing Willie's part while performing their Country duets live and solo, he would hold his index finger up high for the entire audience to see, and then with great deliberation, bring it down to press one nostril closed and - voila! - Willie Nelson!) Well, fact is, Booker T. is a musical genius, and he knew exactly how to sculpt the ideal sonic form to compliment Willie's "unique" vocal quality.

Now, I've never cared for the song SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME - not by Willie, not by Frankie, not by no one - but to my ears, the rest of these songs are gentle, gorgeous, and romantic. ROMANTIC?! Yes, I said, "Romantic." Somehow Booker T. made Willie sound romantic and that's alchemy of the first order! You could play this album at low volume over a candlelight dinner with your Special One, and it would almost work. I say "almost" only because most of the songs are steeped in a melancholic marinade. So, the album might be better suited for playing at low volume while enjoying a warm glass of robust red wine and reminiscing about beautifully serene evenings you spent sipping Old Fashioneds with old flames in old-fashioned lounges. Or calling to mind past barroom brawls you participated in with old Mr. Doom while you were still in your youth. (Hoo-Wee! He had a wicked left hook ... for a dead man!)

After flirting with heavy guitar rock ("The Man Who Sold the World") and lighter pop ("Hunky Dory"), Bowie found middle ground on Ziggy Stardust. The creation of the Ziggy Stardust persona would live on well after Bowie shed the alien skin, marking the first rock concept album by a sexually ambiguous, artistically bent musician who confounded critics at every turn. A blend of dramatic strings, swaggering saxophones, jagged guitars, and theatrical arrangements, the album's darker rock numbers like "It Ain't Easy," "Moonage Daydream," "Ziggy Stardust," and the irresistible "Suffragette City," still serve as solid excursions into the future (then and now) of rock. The buoyant "Hang on to Yourself" and the dreamy "Star" offer hints of optimism in Ziggy's bleak world. The dramatic "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" and the image-heavy "Star Man" ("he'd like to come and meet us but thinks he'd blow our minds!") no doubt provided plenty of stage-worthy moments when Ziggy toured in the '70s, but years later they still thrill. Bowie blew our minds! --Lorry Fleming

4 out of 5 stars Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am.......2007-07-07

Now I do like this. But it is not my favorite David Bowie album. Too many so-so songs ("Star"; "Hang Onto Yourself"; "Five Years"); too much campy over-orchestration ("Rock and Roll Suicide"), one total bomb ("It Ain't Easy") - he even recycles the "Sweet Jane" riff on "Starman", which is otherwise very good. Still, it's Ziggy Stardust, man! You know? It's not like there aren't all kinds of excellent songs on this album, because there are a truckload! You know "Moonage Daydream", right? What a guitar solo! And you know "Ziggy Stardust", I assume! The lyrics! The riff! And, again, the guitar solo! "Starman" is pretty good too, though I think Bowie could've written his own riff rather than take one of Lou Reed's. Been spending too much time around Jimmy Page, have you? Continuing on, "Suffragette City" may not be terribly insightful, but it's a Stonesy rocker with a powerful horn section, so I like it. Another two songs I like that you don't often hear too much of are the cathartic "Soul Love" and the groupie-themed rocker "Lady Stardust". Oh yeah, and then there's the concept. The bisexual androgynous alien coming down from space to save everybody's life. It's a bit clunky, but like Tommy I find Ziggy Stardust is more about the music than the concept. And the music's good!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Bowie.......2007-06-28

This album is still my favorite dating back to 1972.
Bowie was the genius of the 70's.
All serious Bowie fans should add this cd to their collection, this is Bowie at his best, each song could easily be a number 1 hit even today!

Adrian.T.

5 out of 5 stars Ziggy will captivate you!.......2007-06-25

I love David Bowie and could listen to "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" over-and-over. The poetics of Bowie's lyrics and the phenomenal guitar riffs hold this album together and are what makes it a classic, must have album. This is Bowie at his height of fame and truly captures Bowie's glam rock side of the late 1970s. I could not choose a favorite song from this album because, to me, each song builds off of one another like a good concept album should. From the opening of "Five Years" right to the end "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" shows the various levels of Bowie's artistic ability.
This is a must have for any serious collection of Bowie and for anyone interested in good, wholesome rock showcasing one of the best artists of the 1970s.

4 out of 5 stars Trip down memory lane.......2007-06-10

I was in a restaurant when I heard this album being played and it really brought back memories. I used to listen to it as a teenager and I knew I'd enjoy listening to it again as an adult. It didn't disappoint! Classic Bowie!

5 out of 5 stars "Wam, Bam thank you Mam!!".......2007-04-24

Wow, rock n roll can be raw, catchy, dramatic, and quite sophisticated. So what is the need for new bands? Whenever people talk about Bowie they tend to speak in terms of him paving the way for a lot of today's music. Although that is true I don't think any new rock band has come close to this album. It's too painful for some people to look at the 1970's for what it truly was: the golden age of Rock N Roll, an age that younger people like myself missed out on and only live through their C.D. collection. It is much more comforting to call the 1970's the springboard for modern rock and ignore the fact that modern rock is passionless, corporate, crap.
This album is basically the essence of rock n roll. The songs are short, catchy, and upbeat. These are all qualities that most so called "modern rock" bands avoid like the plague although it is what rock music has always truly been about. Ziggy Stardust is from an era when quality was just plain expected in an album. You couldn't release an album with 10 crapped out songs and 1 decent single like today's bands (by the way music downloading and IPODs are not helping this problem).
If you love great rock music (real rock music) please do yourself a favor and buy Ziggy Stardust and give your Track Skip button a long deserved rest.

3 out of 5 stars Where's the glam? Review of the SACD remaster, not of the album.......2007-07-11

I assume you know this album, so I am reviewing the SACD remaster for you. The sound is lovely, but the mix leaves me wanting more.

The SACD has a clean fresh sound. There is nice seperation between instruments. I previously hadn't heard the viola sound rising up in "Hang on to Yourself" The Sacd highlites the acoustic guitar(s). Particularly the surround mix. It is pretty, but makes it sound like a Bowie album, not a Spider's album. I was hoping for some raw Mick Ronson electric beauty, but he seems so tame in the SACD. The theatric strings on pieces like "Starman" too seem so minimal. They don't pick you up and carry you away as they were intended.

The glam is just not present. It sounds more like the "wandering poet with a guitar approach" The stereo layer is better, but the SACD just doesn't capture the creativity of the album, or the dolled up excitement of the scene.

If you like the early acoustic Bowie, you will love this. If you like those naughty Spiders, forget it.

A great album on a great cd, shipped to me so fast I didn't know what it could be when I opened it...surely not the CD I just ordered!?!?

5 out of 5 stars Hang On To Yourself!.......2007-05-25

From the slow, steady beat of "Five Years" to the lavish, lamentable closing, "Rock & Roll Suicide"; "Ziggy Stardust" has held its own in Rock history. Add the element of SACD (surround sound) and the album takes on a new life. From the acoustical clapping of "Soul Love" to the hard driving guitars of "Suffragette City", this new mix finally and clearly separates all the instruments without isolating them. It is a full band experience as if you were in the studio. The acoustic guitars sound so crisp and clean and Mick Ronson's guitar work sounds like new. Although the album has always suggested "To Be Played At Maximum Volume", the bass and drums are not as highly mixed as the rest. That's a shame, as the beat here is legendary. But, I still can't over-emphasize how great this version sounds, especially after marveling over "Dark Side Of The Moon" and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". Hang on to yourself!

5 out of 5 stars great cd highly recommended........2007-02-13

one of the best rock 'n' roll cd of the history.
i think that the few more dollars are worth the hybrid sacd and when you find a compact disc that can play it it's very pleasing.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic.......2007-01-24

This well produced, quality CD will not disappoint you or tarnish your memories of this timeless classic. Each song deftly draws you in, better than when you first heard it (and probably had no idea of just how really good it all was). This CD brings it all back and more - if there is but one ember of your youth left inside - you know you have to have this CD.

Product Description

That Handsome Devil, a born Renaissance man, comes forth with his new genre bending sound: Fringe Pop which is a combination of the last 30 years of counter culture, merging elements of Rock, Lounge, Hip Hop and anything in between.

Album Description

Following the self-help single 'Dating Tips' which has since been rumored as the genus of the Neil Strauss book ''The Game'', That Handsome Devil releases their debut self-titled EP. Arriving with an amazing arsenal of explosive riffs, guitars, keys and horns sweetened by the astounding production of Jeremy Page, front man Godforbid creates imagery that takes the listener from lumbering dreamscapes to howling anthems of cock-walking future pop. Chock-full of edgy lyrics delivered with a bar room swagger and raspy gruffness that forces you to trust their depth, charisma and balls, That Handsome Devil comes off like Tom Waits-meets-Ol Dirty Bastard. Forget Gnarls Barkley, thanks to the That Handsome Devil, the art of post-rap song-writing is here to serve you all, kick plenty of ass and take no prisoners.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album I Heard This Year -- Seriously.......2007-06-09

I wish this was longer. This is music that immediately grabs you -- it's almost too catchy -- but unlike pop music and most of what gets stuck in your head, this is music that rewards repeated listening. Lead singer Godforbid has a lot to offer and a lot to say, and the lyrics have rare depth. Every track is perfect -- the band is spooky good, and they seem to cover every genre there is in the space of seven song EP.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-05-12

Simply Amazing- I can't wait until their next album is released
This is a MUST for all those "alternative music" lovers out there!

5 out of 5 stars All Music Guide Description .......2007-02-23

Imagine the perfect variety show. They may not make them anymore, but you can try to be creative: fill it with comics, a great mix of eclectic guest bands, and a gregarious host that makes his scintillating guests feel at home, while with a wink at the audience, he gently shreds them to bits. That in a musical nutshell describes That Handsome Devil, as well as their eponymous EP. The quintet of musicians have obviously had professional training, and a wealth of experiences in a variety of other settings, for they bring to this set sounds from across the musical spectrum. Big-band swing, blues, surf, jazz -- both traditional and modern -- funk, R&B, hard rock, even a touch of reggae, not even Parliament Funkadelic were this far-ranging, but THD meld it all into a sound even more distinctive than Grandmaster Flash's. Even better, the arrangements are so creative and deft that the music never sounds eclectic just for the sake of it, it's not even showy, so subtle is the stitching linking the genres, so flawless the musicianship. That's reason enough to champion THD, but wait, you haven't met frontman Godforbid yet -- a consummate performer, one of the best white blues singers around, and one heck of a lyricist. Whether languorously consigning listeners to hell on "Standing Room in Heaven," helpfully and hilariously offering up "Dating Tips," recommending that angels carry guns while celebrating the end of the world on "Elephant Bones," showing life through the eyes of a derelict drunk on "Sleep It Off," or bemoaning inequality in "James Dean," Godforbid demands attention, and who could refuse? Like nothing you've ever heard before, THD is an entire musical revue in one small package, a fabulous night out's entertainment; you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll gasp in amazement at all they have to offer.

4 out of 5 stars This catchy, smart album is my new vice........2007-01-08

This album's been in regular rotation at my house for months now. Impress your friends with your eclectic taste. Track one, Godforbid, philosopher and That Handsome Devil's frontman, takes you by the hand and leads you down some stairs into a dimly lit dive bar trimmed in red velvet. You probably shouldn't follow him, but if you turn back now, honey, you'll always wonder, so don't fight it. Things start to get a little crazy after that...the shots of Jack are just coming at you so fast. Once you're loosened up, though, he gets you dancing and it's real pleasant. But now your head's feeling a little funny. Just relax, everything's gonna be o.k., you can handle this surreal scene. Godforbid talks you down. Just put one foot...in front...of the other...
Seriously, this album's too good! That Handsome Devil fills a chilled shaker with jiggers of Lounge, Funk, Rock, and Hip Hop, then adds dashes of Surf and Brit Pop for a cocktail that'll knock you over. Don't worry, it's all shaken together with expert care you're gonna like. Trust me. It's Gnarls Barkley meets the Tindersticks to watch a James Bond flick and hit on Go-Go dancers in an opium den.

If Natalie Cole didn't have a famous father, would anyone listen to her stylish but safe renditions of 40-year-old standards? Well, the devotees of the genre would, for Cole has a light, satiny voice with marvelous fluidity. What she doesn't have is much of a bottom range or a hard edge, and she lacks the boldness to radically alter famous songs. Stardust, returns to the proven formula of 1991's Unforgettable, which sold 9 million copies and won seven Grammies. Once again, the engineers create a vocal duet between the dead father and the ambitious daughter, this time on "When I Fall in Love," and even splice Nat's 1961 organ solo on "Let's Face the Music and Dance" into Natalie's 1996 version. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars STARDUST MELODIES SHINE FOR NATALIE.......2005-08-27

Natalie Cole knows the there is poetry in music which suits her voice well, but it is more than understanding the lilt of a phrase to make a song great. Many song-stylists are able to smooth over old songs and pass them off as "their own". But it's her way of introducing and exploring these songs very substance and heart that makes this release so very good. These are great love songs of the highest order and Natalie does them greater justice. The music, not ordinarily heard on other CDs, was chosen with care. The first song, "There's A Lull In My Life" was from a long forgotten 1937 film called "Wake Up and Live", a beautifully crafted song which Natalie put her own rich vocal style on and makes it shine, even after 60 years of obsurity. Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" has been recorded so often by others, yet Natalie's version became the title song of the CD. In 1936, Irving Berlin penned a song for a film called "Follow That Fleet", entitled "Let's Face The Music and Dance" with none other than Fred Astaire. Natalie used the organ introduction to cover this song. "Teach Me Tonight" and "What A Difference A Day Makes" and "Love Letters" are all sung with honesty that makes the song even better after many years of use by others. But it is "When I Fall In Love" that harkens back to Natalie's dad Nat King Cole...a great song that would be difficult for anyone else to sing but Natalie proves that the song is timeless and she does indeed makes it her own song. The up-beat jazz piece "If You Could See Me Now" (recorded by Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan in the '60s) is a demanding song but Natalie gives it a new "twist" and sings it softer and with great feeling. There are so many great songs in this CD. I highly recommend it to those who want to update their "easy listening" catalog of music. Natalie Cole gives new meaning to love songs best heard under a full moon and stardust. I do like this CD and play it often.

5 out of 5 stars Natalie Cole's Shining Moments.......2005-03-05

leaving me a song that will not die

Hoagy Carmichael & Mitchell Parish

"Stardust" was nominated for 1997 Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal performance.

"When I Fall in Love" won a 1997 Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Accompanying Vocals.

"Teach Me Tonight" was nominated for 1997 Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement with Accompanying Vocals.

This 1996 recording is truly remarkable. Three Grammy nominations and one of them a winner! With her impeccable and incomparable style of singing, Ms. Cole's performances prove to be her shining moments. The repertoire of songs was tastefully chosen and the guest musicians are very impressive, the likes of Lee Ritenour, Bob James, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, John Pizzarelli, Toots Thielemans, Harvey Mason, and George Duke, among many others. Not to mention the best arrangers you can think of...Johnny Mandel, Alan Broadbent, Jim Hughart, Clare Fischer, Rob Maunsey, Jerry Hey, John Clayton and Charles Floyd. And of course this recording wouldn't be possible if not for David Foster, Phil Ramone, George Duke and Ms. Natalie Cole herself. What a great team!

Being a hopeless romantic, I can't help being moved by the beauty of songs in this CD and the way they were performed to perfection, the loveliest songs ever penned by famous songwriters and composers starting with my all-time favorites "When I Fall In Love," "Stardust," "Teach Me Tonight," "Like A Lover," "Let's Face The Music And Dance" and "Love Letters".... (straight from your heart... keep us so near while apart... I'm not alone in the night... when I can have all that love you write... I memorize every line... I kiss the name that you sign...").

There are two versions of "When I Fall In Love" - - digitally remastered duets with Nat King Cole. The first one with English lyrics, and the last track in English and Spanish. Ms. Cole's rendition of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Dindi" proves that she can also sing in Portuguese.

On liner notes, Ms. Cole dedicated this album to her late brother, Nat Kelly Cole, whom she knows is "listening with all ears up in Heaven." And to quote the last paragraph on her "Thank You's" ...."Most importantly, I thank my Heavenly Father, the Lord Jesus Christ, for His unfailing grace and mercy in my life. You don't know what He's done for me - - He gave me the victory!!!"

And Ms. Cole's victory is through sharing with us her gift of making beautiful music for our listening pleasure of a lifetime!

"Though I dream in vain
In my heart, it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain."

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Introduction.......2002-06-13

Rockin' Chair. Lazy River. Bread and Gravy. Hoagy Carmichael evoked the blissfully relaxed lifestyle of a rural America that no longer exists. (Sometimes I wonder if it ever did.) His musical world is among the most distinctive and influential in 20th century jazz and pop, and for that reason you should give him a listen. There's no better start than this CD. I'm no expert on remastering, but the sound quality here appears to be excellent.

Most of the tracks are from the 1930's. Hoagy is alone at the piano in several tracks, and accompanied by an all-star orchestra in others. Then there are covers by a few of his contemporaries. My only problem is that they left out his 1930 recording of "Georgia on My Mind,"(my favorite) and they should've included another version of "Star Dust" - namely, Louis Armstrong's. But it's impossible to do these kind of cross-sections without disappointing someone. Overall, an excellent introduction to genius.

4 out of 5 stars Classics for the Twang set .......2007-03-05

I am not a fan of country music. Yet I am a fan of Willie Nelson. There are a few artists, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash , Waylon Jennings and then Willie, who pull you kicking and screaming across that line. Only for them.

This came out when I was three. I liked it then. As a college kid I bought it for myself and tried to convince my friends that this " Really didn't sound like Willie Nelson". They laughed, but it is a different concept. Nelson takes on standards and gives them a twang treatment while keeping the pretty melodies. His " All of Me" is irresistable. " Moonlight in Vermont" is a worthy rendition, too. Ray Charles does " Georgia" best, but give Nelson credit for taking a respectable crack at it!

Even Gershwin fans can apply. Willie puts a new spin on some pretty terrific chestnuts.

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it!.......2005-09-29

A true audiophile digital transfer. This music may be a little corny but Willie pulls it off great. The SACD sound is near perfect. Some SACD players do have an edgy quality but do not blame it on this amazing 2 channel recording. The only complaint I have about this CD is that it is not a hybrid disc. It can not be played on any automobile players that I am aware of.

3 out of 5 stars CD version sounds better!.......2005-07-13

I own the CD of this great album and just recently bought the SACD version. After having read all the positive reviews I thought this might be a good showcase album for the SACD format but after comparing the CD with the SACD I feel disappointed. Willie's voice on the SACD has some rough edges to it. Surprisingly, his voice on the CD sounds smoother. SACD's play louder than CD's because they have greater dynamic range - perhaps the engineers set the recording level too high when mastering the SACD version and didn't notice the distortion in Willie's voice (please note: I can only hear this distortion on some tracks and only in certain places where the volume peaks - otherwise the sound is very good).

1 out of 5 stars ATTN: Audiophiles who don't listen carefully..........2004-04-27

It seems that my crtique of Amazon was taken as a swipe against Willie Nelson's crisp clear & uncompressed stereo sound. (Good heavens) My beef here was about Amazon's lack of info. with regards to stereo/multi & single/double layer. I don't have a 50k sound system but at least I can read carefully.

5 out of 5 stars Two Channel SACD is better than multi-channel.......2004-03-01

I see a lot of negative reviews on this outstanding recording from Willie nelson based on the fact it is a two channel recording. The two channel recordings give the most accurate reproduction of the actual live recordings.(Two channel sacd recordings have far less compressionand give truer sound reproduction than multichannel) The sonic quality of this particular SACD is outstanding. You would have to buy this album in vinyl to sound any better.! This SACD of the ones I use to demonstrate the superority of SACD over cd's.

4 out of 5 stars Great sounds!.......2006-06-16

Love this CD! Feel in love with it from the first hearing! The Titanic fantasy is wonderful, perhaps a tad long, but wonderful just the same. I got used to the flat high D after a couple hearings. The Hansel und Gretel is nice, but arranged a whole step below the original key, and it looses a little luster. There is a wonderful published 8 part arrangement of this in the original key that I think is better.

The jazz/swing tunes are wonderful. Uses of stopped horn to simulate muted trumpets are quite effective. I also like the use of percussions throughout the disc. I think Caravan is my favorite track.

I just received the Take 9 CD today, and I didn't have the WOW feeling as I didn't when I first heard the London Horn Sound. There are many more tracks on the London CD that I will continue to listen to. The arrangements, I feel, better handle variations of texture and timbre of the homogeneous sound of a horn section. And besides...who cares about the Grand Canyon Suite?? Take 9 arrangement choices are boring.

3 out of 5 stars Its alright.......2005-12-15

This CD has some really beautiful playing, but a lot of the selections are cheesy. i.e. Titanic. They might as well have hired Celine Dion to sing along with them. And although there are some real "wow" moments like when you listen to Caravan for the first time, (The lead horns sound like the trumpet section in a jazz band), overall, the Cd isn't that exciting to listen to more than once. On the other hand, Take 9 is a CD featuring the American Horn Quartet & The Horns of the NY Philharmonic. Not only do they kill the Londoners with their technique and intonation, but the repertoire better suits the medium than lame pop fantasies. Of note is the orchestral transcription of Overture to Candide. I say transcription because yes, they even play the flute and clarinet solos in the correct octave. TAKE 9 Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars absolutely Inspirational.......2005-10-11

This is THE CD I listen to on the way to rehearsal. It truly inspires me to do my absolute best! You've got to love Roman Carnival - so excellent! I would recommend this CD to anyone, especially horn and brass players. These performers are just phenomenal. What else is there to say?

5 out of 5 stars Heaven on Earth.......2005-08-02

This CD is incredible. The horn is shown for all it is worth. From the beauty of the "Titanic" Fantasy and Hansel and Gretel to the latin Tico-Tico, jazz of Ellington in Caravan and the incredible rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody, the horn proves it is not as limited an instrument as some may think. Both the high and low ends of the horn are highlighted. Simply heavenly. If you like horn playing at all or even if you don't, you will want to give this CD a listen. It is well worth your time and money.

5 out of 5 stars A fun and inspirational listen.......2005-05-06

I love this CD. In addition to showing off some of the finest horn playing I've ever heard, there's something here for every musical taste. My favorite track is without question the Titanic Fantasy...I'm a French horn major at the moment, and whenever I really, really don't want to practice, I pull out this CD and listen to that song. It gets me up and going nine times out of ten. It's worth listening to just to hear that final high D...absolutely heavenly!
