5 out of 5 stars I love the music on this disc.......2007-07-14

Les Paul and his wife Mary Ford are legends in jazz music. My favorite track on this disc is "I'm Sitting On The Top Of The World." Nobody could play the electric guitar as masterfully as Les Paul. Mary Paul's voice is so sensual on the track "I'm A Fool To Care." I love this track. "Tennessee Waltz" and "Vaya Con Dios" are classic romantic tunes. These tracks makes me think of someone special. "In The Mood" is another excellent song that puts me in a great mood. "Bye Bye Blues" is an uptempo track that stands out as one of the best here. "I Really Don't Want To Know" is a pretty song. I love the tenderness in Mary Ford's voice on this track. This disc is filled with great music.

This must be one of the best CD's available letting new comers to LP&MF hear some of their best tracks from the 50's and they have not dated since then. Unfortunately CAPITAL in their wisdom have omitted others which should have been included. I can name but a few:- La Rossita - Mac the Knife - Three little words - Magic Melody - Hold me in your arms - Old Mexico - What is this thing called love - Walking & Whistling Blues - I'm Jealous - By the light of the Silvery Moon - Chicken Reel. and I'm sure there's more. So it looks like we'll have to wait till Les reaches his 100th Birthday before we see a Box Set.
I am tempted to wait - that's if I can manage to live as long as Les. He's doing great, and I hope he will still be playing when he reaches 100! Well done mate!

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2005-11-02

The recordings sound very modern. You can't tell this wasn't recorded yesterday; just listen to the samples. Les Paul had an inimitable guitar style. The man was the master, and teamed with the easy, lilting style of Mary Ford AKA (Iris) Colleen Summers (who started out in Western music), how could they not score? This music, while a product of its era, is timeless. This is perfection. This is the stuff dreams are made of. I usually review Classical music, but what can be more classic than this?

I only regret that a box set is not available, since I love everything that Les Paul and Mary Ford ever waxed. A particular favorite of mine that is missing is the Hawaiian love song, "The Moon of Manakoora". It is every bit as beautiful as the version recorded by Alfred Ahola Apaka, the crooning voice of Hawaii, and is recorded better. There are other notable omissions that I won't tire you with here, but this is the best set available until a box set is released. Absolutely wonderful music making. Curl up to the fire and warm with it; You'll love how it gets you in the mood.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits? YESSSSSSSSSSSS.......2007-04-16

Perhaps at the time, these were considered their greatest hits. I've had my LP and CD for a very long time. I can't even remember. I love it. She was like an angel singing with herself. They seemed to adore one another on the TV show. She - so beautiful - and he - just beaming at her.
Maybe it's time to do another greatest hits and call it "More Greatest Hits". Other singers do it. And maybe all of us didn't agree with their first "greatest hit". Hey, you guys out there who do these kinds of things, what's taken so long?

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2007-02-09

Every fan of Guitar music will appreciate this Album.
Les Paul is not only a great Guitarist he is an inventor of modern recording technology.
Dual track recording and his use of up to eight tracks made him an music industry icon.
Mary Ford's strong clear voice makes this duo complete.
A great Album!

2 out of 5 stars Some Glaring Omissions!.......2005-08-06

I'm a huge fan of Les Paul and after reviewing the track list on this CD, I don't see how anyone in their right mind could call it an "all time greatest hits" collection.

While tracks such as "Mockin' Bird Hill", "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise", and "Vaya Con Dios" among the duo's best loved and best known songs, I find the omission of "How High the Moon", one the their biggest hits, to be unforgiveable. Equally astonishing is why "Dry My Tears", the theme song of Les & Mary's 50s radio show, and "Cryin'", arguably the best song Mary Ford has ever sung, were excluded. I would much rather have had those tracks included in the disc than the cover version of Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz", and the ersatz "Meet Mr. Callaghan". It's also hard to understand why the only Les Paul solo instrumental track on this disc is "Bye Bye Blues". "Lover", the song that propelled Les into the spotlight, and "Nola", a song that enjoyed worldwide popularity, were inexplicably left out.

While this is a decent collection of the work of Les Paul and Mary Ford, it is definitely NOT their all time greatest hits. The record label ought to be sued for false advertising.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing!.......2004-12-31

I've just discovered this pair, and I'm so sorry I haven't heard them until now. Being a jazz vocalist, I'm always looking for challenging material. I have a few CDs in this genre, but the styling, and caliber of the musicians puts my other CDs to shame. I suspect k.d. lang has borrowed styling from the likes of Mary Ford, as their voices seem to lilt in the same fashion. Les Paul's ability makes me wonder if there are more than two or three guitars playing simultaneously. Many of these cuts are very subtle in their exhibition of complicated material. For those so inclined to listen, it's an auditory adventure.

From Amazon.co.uk

From the first strains of the opening track, "Sisters," it's clear that Betcha Bottom Dollar is not a typical debut album. But then the Puppini Sisters are not a typical pop act, at least not in the 21st century. Their close, three-part harmonies are reminiscent of the vocal groups of the 1930s and 1940s, and particularly the Andrews Sisters. But rather than sounding like an anachronism, the Puppini Sisters merely demonstrate the timelessness of some of these songs. Betcha Bottom Dollar is fresh, fun and vibrant, blowing the dust off of cobwebby classics like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "Mr. Sandman". Elsewhere, they also put their own unique stamp on more recent hits, with varying results. While Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" and Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" fail to get things swinging, Blondie's "Heart of Glass" and the Smiths' "Panic" are both injected with a fresh new (old?) sound. Much credit must also be given to producer Benoit Charest, who manages to employ a whole host of instrumentation and orchestration, whilst never forgetting to put the voices of the Puppini Sisters front and centre. It might be easy to dismiss the Puppini Sisters' debut as another novelty album, but their intentions and love for the style--like their voices themselves--are crystal clear. --Robert Burrow

Album Description

Inspired by the Oscar®-nominated film The Triplets of Belleville (a French animated movie which features a `40s-style harmony group), The Puppini Sisters -- Marcella Puppini, Kate Mullins, and Stephanie O'Brien -- formed in London. Dressed in 1940's-style wardrobe, the three sing like The Andrews Sisters with inspiring harmonies, and perform classics such as "Mr. Sandman," "In The Mood," and "Jeepers Creepers." But what make The Puppini Sisters truly stand out are their show-stopping interpretations of more current tunes.

Do you like the Chordettes??
Then, you'll LOVE the Puppini Sisters.

Their voices are absolutely divinely crystal.
It makes me feel like I grew up in the 20's or 50's, or whenever the heck old cars were in style.
Some covers...

A bit expensive for a group of women I never heard of before. But, if you like harmonizing vocals with very 1940's feel, you'll defintely think it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars fun.......2007-07-13

Betcha'll have fun with this CD. Loved the old songs and loved the way the newer songs were arranged.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-07-12

I really enjoy listening to the Puppini Sisters. At times they sound almost like the Andrew Sisters, as in Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, but in Heart of Glass they have their own unique sound. I discovered them by accident on Amazon, and I'm glad I did. I'm planning on buying some of their other albums.

5 out of 5 stars Bette'Cha will like it!!.......2007-07-06

All real vocals in the studio with no technology altering! Like they did back in the day. In Betcha Bottom Dollar's case, the 40's and up! Their harmony's are impeccable as is their choice of song. They obviously resemble The Andrew Sisters and The Boswell Sisters with their renditions of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, In The Mood, Bei Mir Bist Du Sc hon, Heebie Jeebies, Jeepers Creepers and Java Jive. In the early 70's Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Melissa Manchester, Manhattan Transfer and the Pointer Sisters also paid tribute and got their start performing this type of music. Of course they all went on to do many other major achievements in the music industry.

What makes this CD so appealing in this day and age is that they also take songs from other time periods and give them a new twist...or an old one as it is! Listen to how cleverly they recorded Blondie's Heart Of Glass and Gloria Gaynor's anthem I Will Survive. You never heard them like this...and how refreshing! I am also impressed with other selections like the reworking of The Smiths Panic and Kate Bush Wuthering Heights which were big UK hits.

Also included is Sway which has made a comeback via Michael Buble and Tu Voi Fa L'Americano made famous in The Talented Mr Ripley movie. There is also a fabulous version of Mr. Sandman which was recorded by The Chordettes, McGuire Sisters and Emylou Harris. Last but not least is the perfect song to open this set, Sisters, which was recently covered by Bette Midler & Linda Ronstadt on Bette's Rosemary Clooney tribute.

These girls are awesome and it will be a pleasure to watch them blossom into and awesome vocal trio. They are currently working on a second CD with all of the above and some originals. Can't wait...til then enjoy

4 out of 5 stars P.S.(Puppini Sisters) I love you!.......2007-07-03

My brother found this recording for $10 in Bangkok - not a counterfeit. The sisters are precious, the more I listen to their songs the more I appreciate the nostalgic music brought up-to-date. I hope they turn up the heat and let their harmonious voices really loose on their next recording. The background music does not do justice to their singing. In any case, I would buy any recording they care to make.

Pop's rush to raid the cradle continues with this promising debut by 25-year-old Canadian singer Michael Bublé. And while the young vocal star's good looks are smart enough for a boy band, his muse seems to have sprung from a more sassy and compelling musical era. Mentored by Paul Anka (whose '50s hit "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" is covered in dreamy, cabaret fashion here), Bublé sings in the orbits of Darin and Sinatra, covering swing epoch gems ("Come Fly with Me," "The Way You Look Tonight," "That's All") and rock era standards (Van Morrison's "Moondance," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by the Brothers Gibb, Queen's "Crazy Little Ting Called Love") with equal aplomb. David Foster's production is typically slick and played to the back row of the bleachers, but it's informed by smart contexts provided by such arrangers as Johnny Mandel, Randy Waldman, and Mike Melvoin. If the choices of material are sometimes staid and predictable, they also give the singer a crucial framework for building toward something more challenging; his is a bright future. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Producer David Foster (Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston) has a new discovery in the wake of a very successful young find Josh Groban. Michael Buble (pronounced boo-blay) is a 25-year-old singing sensation whose smooth voice & heartthrob style harks back to the swingin' greats of earlier decades, to the likes of Frank & Dean, but also speaks to a new generation's sensibility. 2003 self-titled debut from Reprise/143.

5 out of 5 stars "Just a Dream".......2007-06-12

Michael Bublé's voice takes me to another dimension high above. His voice has an undescribable quality that you have to experience to understand. He's like a cross between Frank Sinatra and Jack Jones. If you enjoy the standards of the American Songbook, you'll love the fresh yet traditional versions of the standards which he sings. I've been listening to the standards sung by Sinatra, Nat King Cole, etc for decades and usually don't enjoy remakes by recent modern artists; Michael Bublé is one of the rare exceptions who outshines all of the recent standards singers wannabes.

This CD is an incredibly great album to from start to finish; there's no need to skip songs which are merely mediocre or plain terrible because each song is a great rendition and a true gem.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Buble'.......2007-06-09

Can't say enough about this new and up coming singer. He sounds to me so much like Sinatra when he was young. This album is very good and I enjoyed it very much.

This album appears in the footsteps of 2004's The Girl in the Other Room but doesn't sound like a follow-up. Whereas The Girl saw the pianist-singer abandon the Great American Songbook for more personal pastures, From This Moment On sees her working out on standards done in traditional arrangements. Although the tracks here are by the likes of Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn, and the Gershwins, Krall sounds more at ease than ever before; perhaps digging deep inside on The Girl loosened her up. Backed by the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on seven tracks, Krall sings off the big band with ease. On the title track, she keeps up with a galloping bass and explosive brass arrangements and even ventures into scatting toward the end of the song. Her voice has also acquired a wonderfully worn texture in the past few years, and it works wonders on the ballads (just listen to "Isn't This a Lovely Day" and "Little Girl Blue" for instance). When standards are done like this, there's just nothing like 'em. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

From This Moment On is an 11-song collection that captures the Canadian-born sensation in full swing, in great company, and at the top of her game. It could also be called her strongest, most cohesive release to date. Krall--for the few still unknowing--is the 41-year old sensation whose cool, heavy-lidded vocals and strikingly sensitive piano-playing has helped her transcend barriers of genre to become a popular artist of the first order who has carved herself a permanent position at the top of the jazz charts. In songs, mood, and delivery, From This Moment On reveals Krall's personal ardor for that golden era of song-making, when Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and (especially) Nat "King" Cole were in their prime. It's musical territory that Krall has often explored, but this album was certainly not a case of simply repeating past formulas: Krall's A-team of support--producer Tommy LiPuma, engineer Al Schmitt, and arranger/bandleader John Clayton--were on hand to ensure that inspiration was kept on an edge, unhindered by the studio environment.

2 out of 5 stars Cover Artist.......2007-07-19

I listened Diana Krall live in concert tonight. I did not know much about her except that she is regarded as one of the greatest jazz artists of our generation which made me feel rather ignorant as I am a big fan of jazz. She played for an hour and a half tonight and she is obviously a talented musician. However, one thing struck me as odd ... for one of the shining lights of modern jazz, she sang one, ONE, original song. All of the music she played were covers of some of the greatest jazz music ever recorded. What became evident is that this talented woman bears a talent that is only skin deep. The one original song that she sang was horrendous, a lyrical disaster. I cringed each and every time the refrain was repeated. Granted the crowd, purveyors of insipid music one and all, ate it up. Her own music can't all be that bad can it? I walked away with the thought that music, as in fine arts, has simply become a playground for lazy artists to appeal to lazy fans who don't expect any more than rote regurgitation. Diana Krall is a cover artist. What galls me about her fame and fortune is that talent alone didn't make her famous. Is it because she's an attractive woman who can tickle the keys of a piano and sing in a sultry voice? There are multitudes of rock cover bands who get ridiculed for playing songs they didn't write. So, why does this woman get lauded for doing the same thing? Talented yes, but genius? ... to compare her to Cole Porter or Nat King Cole would be sinful.

Diana has one of the greatest voices in the jazz biz. She plays a great piano, sings as a song bird, and is truly a marvelous performer.
(Cute too.)

Listening to my CD of Diana Krall, "From This Moment On," is so relaxing.
Diana executes her songs with her strong, yet mellow voice.
The "back-up" band is a great asset to this CD, so between Diana singing and the band playing, you feel like you're "In Concert!"

Everyone HAS to hear it to believe it!

5 out of 5 stars From This Moment On.......2007-06-10

From This Moment On~ Diana Krall is easy listening jazz at its best. Ms Kralls vocal skills are remarkable and she sings these traditional jazz tunes with conviction and fortitude of a grandmaster of jazz. The book-let is beautifull if a bit sparse. The photographs are simply put it amazing and she looks stunning. The production value is right on the money and I like it since it so easy to listen to even for jazz beginners such as myself. Highly recommended indeed and I easily give this album 5 out of 5 stars.

Repertoire consists of rather expected standards. All broadly covered brilliantly by so many vocalists in the past. Ms. Krall and her arrangers adds nothing at all.

Singing offers no surprise than a mainstream singer would do.

Orchestra is currently the darling big band of the time being. Good players, rare good ideas, nothing impelling.

There is an original and beautiful arrangement here: for the track 'How Insensitive'.

And that's all. Let's wait for the next Krall album.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2007-07-12

Puts most modern players to shame. And Les is not forgotten - at 92, still plays every Monday at the Iridium in NYC (great show btw) with many amazing players making surprise visits to pay homage. Also the the recent PBS American Masters piece on Les.

5 out of 5 stars Something Great From The Man Who "Invented" The Electric Guitar.......2007-05-14

Like Jelly Roll Morton a generation before him (who claimed to have "invented" Jazz and whose recodings set the standard for that era) these lovely early tracks from Les Paul deserve to be heard by the younger generation, and we older folk can do with some reminding, too.

What a pity to have all but forgotten him, so. If Les Paul (or Mary Ford) is still alive (I realise they would be a little old if they still were) I wish they could know that I and my wife haven't forgotten them and now that I have this excellent re recording, we never will.

5 out of 5 stars Treasure trove of scintillating miniatures.......2005-11-17

I never appreciated the superb musicianship of Les Paul until picking up this bargain-priced collection of 20 dazzling performances by the "Wizard of Waukesha." Now it finally begins to make sense that one of his early, formative influences was no less than Art Tatum.

Within each of these 2-3 minute masterpieces Les manages to impress as a solo guitar master as well as a tasteful, expressive musician and an ensemble player of the first order. There's no electronic trickery on these recordings from 1947--simply a level of artistry and flawless execution that's all the more striking because of the limited space given each player to say his piece. The tempos include a couple of ballads and medium tempos along with the predominantly up-tempo tunes.

No less impressive than the solos is the inventiveness of the compositions and the glittering tightness of the ensemble playing. Much of the time Les is heard playing blazingly fast melodic lines in harmony with a nameless piano virtuoso who is on the same level as Les if not even more fluent and imaginative. In fact, the single downside of this collection is the absence of dates, musicians' names, and all other potentially useful information about the recordings (some research suggests that the pianist is Paul Smith).

Admittedly, Les frequently resorts to "canned licks" rather than risking extemporaneous improvisation on the chords (the pianist is usually given the more adventurous role). Nevertheless, this is challenging, exhilarating music, full of surprises and played to perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Laserlight Comes Through Again.......2005-08-02

Laserlight seems to have a magical ability to put out excellent collections (They put out some fantastic Nat King Cole Trio collections as well. Check them out too!) for dirt cheap.

This collection concentrates on Les Paul's early carrer and as the title implies, it is his trio of guitar, bass and piano. The recordings were made in the 1940's and are mono, but the sound is crisp and clear.

Definitely a great buy at the price. Larry's review pretty much sums it up.

5 out of 5 stars MORE of Les!.......2003-02-25

Well, for the price of this CD, I could have bought a Burger, Fries, and a Coke but...I'm glad I didn't. This CD rocks, which is ironic considering the price. If you are a guitar player, or a fan of guitar music this disc is sure to be a welcome addition to your collection.
The 21 cuts are circa 1947, which means the recordings are pre-Gibson Les Paul model guitar. Since he's playing a jazz box, his tone is really warm and smooth, compared to the brighter tone of his later solid body work,(1950's - 60's) but his sense of humor and wicked licks are here nonetheless.
In fact, the CD is an excellent, equally mixed collection of slow sultry tunes, medium paced bops, and flat-out, high-speed ripping. The significance is that many of Les' CD's are not specifically aimed at appreciating his mastery of the instrument, but instead are fixated in content either on his association with Mary Ford, or his inventive marvels like multi-tracking and echo. As a result, much of Les' pure technique winds-up being buried and taking a back seat to either Mary's vocals, or his own signal processing.
Even worse, some manufacturers are releasing discs entitled "Guitar Wizard" for example, that are cleverly using the title as a marketing gimmick only, and with no intent to include tracks that showcase Les' incredible fretting agility and monster technique.
Pathetic.
Not the case here though.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the other stuff he has done, but there is just so damn much of it, and hardly any CD's exist to the contrary that prove "Les is More" - without the multi-tracking or signal processing.
I do know that he is known for his "new sound", and it is a wonderful part of music history, but by fixating ONLY on that, record companies have shorted us the pleasure of enjoying Les as the phenomenal guitarist that he truly is, in his purest form. Personally I believe that a collection CD featuring Les' best guitar work is not only badly needed, but actually OWED to him, considering what he has done for the electric guitar specifically, and the music industry in general.
Whether or not you like his music, one fact remains...
This is the man that "discovered electricity" for guitar players, and multi-track recording for the record industry.
Until someone releases something worthy, this CD is an excellent, excellent effort.
My hat's off to it's manufacturer (Laserlight) and am hoping for more...

A great, comprehensive collection of Sinatra's most popular Reprise tracks, and worth having for any number of reasons, Very Best Of features tons of familiar hits--but requires a caveat for casual Sinatra fans. When Sinatra formed Reprise, he began to re-record many of the sides he'd released on Capitol, in an attempt to transfer his catalog to the new label. It was a smooth move, but his re-recorded versions seldom replaced the originals in the way he'd hoped. And many of the familiar songs here are Capitol remakes. It'd be a task to compare the track listing here with that of the Capitol Years set, but if you want to get serious about your Sinatra, that's the way to go. If you're just a music fan, this is a gem. --Gavin McNett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation..........2007-06-01

..because it does NOT contain the horrendous "High Hopes". The other point I'd like to mention is that Sinatra would be well advised to wear a hat that fits his head... and NOT one a few sizes too small, like the ridiculous chapeau he is sporting on the cd cover.. any notion of "King Of Cool" goes out the window when you see Ol' Blue Eyes with that ridiculous lid mounted on his melon! Personally, I think he should have worn a fez.... or be pictured naked, wearing only a sombrero and a pair of flippers.

4 out of 5 stars Great C.D........2007-05-28

This is excellent CD if you like frank sinatra. Has some of his best songs on that are well known along with others. I would definately recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Listening.......2007-05-24

A bit of nostalgia, some of the best recordings ever made. My children were totally speechless(unusually quiet)when I popped this CD into the car stereo on a long drive home from, ironicly, Las Vegas. The rich orchestral sounds accompanying Sinatra's smooth vocals, were a style they had never heard before. After our trip to Nevada, it somehow seemed the appropriate music at the time.

5 out of 5 stars ahhh Frank.......2007-05-19

Frank is the master; this CD has some of his all time signature work.
If you want a wake up call for what we call music today just pick up
this CD and remember. While at it you might consider his ONLY THE
LONELY CD.

5 out of 5 stars His Very Best Indeed........2007-05-06

Though it wasn't as artistically impressive, as his ten year tenure at Capitol Records, Sinatra's longtime stint at his own Reprise record label provided some of the best music of Sinatra's career.

There are many collections that offer a generous selection of Sinatra's best work from this time period. There's the single disc "The Very Good Years", which is the album that turned me on to The Voice when I was just a toddler. Then there's the excellent 4 cd "The Reprise Collection", which is a bit pricey but entirely worthwhile. Finally, there's the mammoth "The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings", which clocks in at an astonishing 20 discs and costs about $ 300.00. Fantastic music, no doubt, but a bit overwhelming, especially for a beginner.

For those looking for a solid middle ground between these collections, look no further than the 2 cd, 40 song collection "The Very Best Of Frank Sinatra". Though it heavily relies on re-recordings of classics from his Capitol era, "The Very Best Of Frank Sinatra" still has a great amount of original material that Sinatra recorded at the label, and the sound quality is fantastic.

Disc 1 is of higher artistic quality, though in all honesty, the one that is less enjoyable. Not that it's bad. Here, you get excellent renderings of standards such as "Stardust", "A Foggy Day", a touching "The Girl Next Door", a swingin' "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and "Let's Face The Music And Dance". In addition to that you do get the usual timeless Sinatra classics, including "The Way You Look Tonight", "Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)", "My Kind Of Town" and "The Best Is Yet To Come".

Three classic songs from the Capitol years have been included in their Reprise versions. First is an updating of "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning", which falters in comparison to the original. The original was sparse, raw and dripping with sadness. This version has a fuller arrangement, is more "polished", and there isn't a sense of pure sadness in Frank's voice the way there is on the original.

Next comes "I've Got You Under My Skin", which is much livelier and grander than the rigid and stiff 1956 arrangement. The Capitol version was restrained and Frank sounded bored. This version is looser and Frank's clearly having fun on this one. Though the 1966 live version with Count Basie is the definitive performance of the song, this is probably the best studio recording Frank did of this Cole Porter standard. Next comes a 1965 reworking of "Come Fly With Me" that easily triumphs over the original. Like the original version of "I've Got You Under My Skin", the original was too laid back and stiff. Sinatra swings this one hard, and it makes for the definitive version.

Disc 2 is the artistically weaker but the more enjoyable. After starting off with his classic "It Was A Very Good Year", the disc tends to lean heavily on re-recordings. Some of them work (the versions of "Witchcraft" and "(Love Is) The Tender Trap" run circles around their Capitol predecessors), others are nice for comparison ("Young At Heart" and "All The Way" don't touch their originals but are still serviceable renditions), while others fall flat ("All Or Nothing At All" is too over the top and should've been featured in the up-tempo version from 1966).

Of course, the usual hits are here, including "Strangers In The Night", "The Summer Wind" and signature hits "My Way" and "New York, New York". Also included are the little known Antonio Carlos Jobim collaboration "Wave" and his classic duet with daughter Nancy, "Somethin' Stupid".

Overall, this is a fantastic introduction for Sinatra beginners who want the cream of the crop of his later years. It's reasonably priced, easy find, has great packaging and liner notes, and has a fantastic selection of songs. A must-have for fans of who I deem God's Gift To Music.

Album Description

The fun songs here are timeless classics that appeal to kids of all ages. By featuring childhood favorites such as "Old McDonald" and "The Muffin Man," both sung by Ella Fitzgerald, as well as more offbeat songs ("Mumbles" by Oscar Peterson featuring Clark Terry), Jazz for Kids makes for a great way to teach youngsters about jazz and swing music as well as some of its most legendary performers.

Little ones can sing along with Lionel Hampton's "Rag Mop" and share in the hand claps on "When the Red, Red, Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along" performed here by Carmen McRae. Their appetites will surely be fueled by Louis Prima's "Yes! We Have No Bananas" and "Potato Chips" from Slim Gaillard and His Baker's Dozen.

The kid-tested collection (children, nieces and nephews of Verve Records' staff helped make the final selections) also includes "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" by Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five, "Chicken Rhythm" also by Slim Gaillard, and Blossom Dearie's "Doop-Doo-De-Doop (A Doodlin' Song)."

Jazz for Kids finishes with an inspiring lesson and uplifting message for both youngsters and adults alike in the form of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World."

As Jazz for Kids makes little girls and boys dance, smile, giggle and ask for more, it is finally a children's album that their parents won't mind listening to again, and again, and again, and again...

5 out of 5 stars Really Fun. My children like it. I like it........2007-06-27

I probably like it more than my children do, but they have enjoyed listening as we drive around.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-06-11

Real Jazz artist...real kids music...perfect pairings for the parent wanting to inspire a love of music and culture in their children! The Old McDonald rendition has since turned my 18 month old son onto listening to my other Jazz alblums. SO much better than the sugar-sweet kids music that drives parents crazy. I have no problem listening to this alblum with other adults in the car.

5 out of 5 stars I wish there were more albums like this one........2007-05-13

Jazzed up versions of songs you know and new funky songs you don't. We bought this CD for our young daughter (6 months at the time). My husband and I can't help singing the "Potato Chips" song whenver we eat them for lunch and the rest of the songs whenever. This is one of our favorite CDs for Kids. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to introduce jazz to kids (or adults) because it is so fun. You can't help but toe-tap when you hear it.

5 out of 5 stars THE best kids CD I've ever heard........2007-05-03

This CD is fabulous for kids and parents alike.

5 out of 5 stars We love this CD!!!.......2007-04-28

My 4 year old daughter absolutely loves this CD, and so do we - another one of those kid's CDs that both parents and kids can genuinely enjoy together. I guess what I like about this CD above and beyond, though, is that the songs are originals - not new "kids versions" of great songs. My daughter gets to hear this great music, by the original musicians, without it being watered down at all for her...and yet it is still music that is completely appropriate for her age. The songs on this CD are incredibly energetic, lively, and fun, and the times dancing and singing to them with my daughter have been among my favorite experiences with her!

Few would dispute that Frank Sinatra was one of the greatest popular singers of the 20th century. His voice had distinct power and majesty, whether he was belting out a swinging dance number or softly crooning a tender ballad. When he was at his height, no one could touch him, and the songs collected on Classic Sinatra showcase the range of his talent. Recorded during his memorable run for Capitol Records in the 1950s, the songs here are more than just his best, they're often the definitive recordings: "I Get a Kick out of You," "Young at Heart," "Witchcraft," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "In the Wee Small Hours," and "I've Got You Under My Skin." Like almost everything Sinatra recorded during this period, there isn't a dud to be found, which makes Classic Sinatra a perfect introduction to the work of this truly great talent. --Robert Burrow

5 out of 5 stars Great Sinatra sound........2007-07-09

This CD has many classic Sinatra songs just as reflected by its name. Great CD for easy listening.

5 out of 5 stars An Ideal Single Disc Collection Of Sinatra's Peak Years........2007-05-03

As someone who's been Sinatra's fan literally since he was a baby, I generally do consider myself an expert in his music. And since I consider myself someone with that expertise, I feel I have the right to suggest to beginning Sinatra (a new one enter's God's world every day) which is the best collection to introduce them into each phase of The Voice's career.

Now, like most hardcore Ol' Blue Eyes fans, I consider Sinatra's best period as an artist to be his tenure at Capitol Records. And like most fans, I consider the best introduction to that period is the three cd boxed set "The Capitol Years". However, that set may or may not be too pricey for beginning fans.

Now, those with that dilemma can hold themselves over with the 20 song, single disc "Classic Sinatra". Though nowhere near as concise the 75 song "The Capitol Years", "Classic Sinatra" boasts 20 songs that define Sinatra's style and artistic ability also boasts superior sound quality.

Among the clasics here are songs like "I've Got The World On A String", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Witchcraft", "All The Way", "Come Fly With Me" and "Nice N' Easy", all songs which are instantly indentifiable with Sinatra because unmatchable ability to deliver a song. This goes evne moreso for songs like "My Funny Valentine" and "Someone To Watch Over Me", songs done contless times by numerous artists, yet it's always Sinatra's versions that are named definitive.

So while not as concise as its three disc predecssor, "Classic Sinatra" is still a solid introduction to The Greatest Artist Of All Time in his peak years.

2 out of 5 stars Like a 45rpm disc.......2007-03-23

Should have been remastered but at that price I enjoyed crooning to my favorite lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars My introduction into the world of Frank Sinatra........2007-01-23

My dad bought me this CD as a gift years ago. I didn't care for Frank at the time, but as I listened to this CD, I grew to love the music of Frank Sinatra. The time period this CD covers is during his years at Capitol Records, which is still my favorite label that he worked under. This CD is great - a lot of Sinatra classics when the man's voice was at his best. Fresh, chipper, and sharp. This is an excellent CD for someone who is new to Frank. I own the 4-CD disc set from his Capitol years as well, but this is a great little disc all on it's own.

5 out of 5 stars This was my first Sinatra album..........2006-12-28

...and now I have got more than 20 albums by The Voice in my collection. I was into Rock and Jazz and never paid much attention to Sinatra, although I knew he was considered the best singer of the 20th century. When I heard this album I was absolutely shocked!!!. It is perfect!!! The voice, the songs, the arrangements, the sound... This album changed my life forever. After years ignoring Sinatra, I am such a big fan that my mother calls Him "your friend". Now I can only think about saving some money to buy more and more Sinatra albums!!!. Probably, if I had to select only 2 albums from my huge collection (more or less 1500 CDs and 500 vinyl LPs) this album would be the first, and the second would be some Bill Evans (the piano player, not the sax player).

I discovered Sinatra when a friend of mine, who is absolutely into Jazz, told me that Sinatra is his favourite singer of all times. And I thoug: "If me and Teo have more or less the same tastes in Jazz, I should try Sinatra". And this album was the perfect introduction to him.

So no doubts, if you are new to Sinatra, buy this album and you will so shocked that, like me, you won't stop buying more CDs by Him.

And I have to point something finally: I have read many of the reviews in amazon, recomending other albums or periods of 'ol blue eyes, but almost no one says nothing about his columbia years. I own the 4-CD box set "The best of the Columbia years (1943-1952)" and I think it is absolutely amazing. It contents mainly ballads, but Sinatra is in perfect voice, the arrangements by Axel Stordahl are fantastic, and the sound quality is quite good. Now I am listening to "The house I live in" and singing ...that's America to meeeee.

so BUY THIS ALBUM and you will changed forever!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the best of ella.......2007-01-17

great cd. i bought it as a gift for my mom and she loves it. i actually really like it too even though i had never heard much by ella before. a great variety of all of her best work and displays her voice so well.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not enough.......2007-01-10

I really like Ella Fitzgerald. She was probably the greatest Jazz singer ever. This makes almost every song she sings nice, but I think this is not enough for a disc that aims to be the "very best" of Ella. Not all the songs in my opinion were the very best, there were many that were missing and some that are nice but not the best. Also the order sounds a little bit messy to me. In conclusion, I prefer other discs, but this one anyway is cheap and it's a cute introduction to the singer.

5 out of 5 stars "PERFECTION".......2006-11-12

Every track on this CD brought out Ella's
superiority of a vocal artist. I have been
blessed to have seen Ella live in concert
two times. Once as as solo performer at
Indiana University and the other performace
was in Chicago and the billing was titled
"Sinatra, Fitzgerald, & The Duke" I have been able
to relive these wonderful performances with this CD
"Pure Ella" By the way, there is now a performer in
Chicago who has her range and talent. Her name is Lisa
McClowry and she can be be seen live with Tom Linsk most
monday & thursdays at "The Red Head" in Chicago. Be there!
You will not regret it!!!

5 out of 5 stars The most talented singer of our time!.......2006-11-08

Just recently started getting into vocal jazz. I already own a few classic jazz compilations with a few of Ella's songs on them. The first time I heard her voice I was hooked! I escpecially loved her cover of Mack the Knife! im not going to spend time and try to write some pseudo-intellectual dribble. As I already stated, im fairly new to the classic/vocal jazz world so I wont waste anyones time pretending to know a lot about this genre. What I do know is Ella Fitzgewrald a musical goddess.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Singer in the world!!!!.......2005-06-22

This woman is the Best singer I've ever heard.I'm only 20 years old and I just looooove her music so much.
