Customer Reviews:
Dick Whittington Trio in New York.......2004-10-22
If you like Brad Mehldau or the Fred Hersch Trio, you are bound to like The Dick Whittington Trio on what may be their only available CD, which dates back to 1992. One can also hear the influence of Bill Evans in these recordings, all of which are well arranged and tastefully executed. I first heard them on KUNV FM, in Las Vegas, because DJ Steven Charles decided that this relatively obscure group deserved some exposure. The music lives up to his usual excellent taste, and stands out when hear alongside typical piano jazz pieces that have typically been over played. You have the play list elsewhere on this site and I must say it is difficult to decide which tunes are my favorites, although Whittington offers two of his own including "Marilyn's Waltz", the title of which reminded me of Bill Evans's "Waltz for Debbie", and which does have an Evans feel about it.
The remainder of the album is comprised of jazz standards, recognizable but done with a few special flourishes, that always make piano jazz interesting
a hidden treasure.......2003-04-08
This is a piano trio. There's a lot to commend about this recording. The tunes chosen are good melodies:Chelsea Bridge, Manteca, God Bless the Child. Whittington is a clever and straight-forward player;you can always tell where he is (in the song)during his solos. The trio interacts well. There's nothing jarring about the recording. Only "Too Close for Comfort" is taken at a fast clip (and, for me, it's the one arrangement that doesn't entirely succeed). The clarity and quality of the sound recording are terrific. I usually listen to this on a car CD player; even in the car, it sounds great. Highly reccommended.
