4 out of 5 stars Got to like it.......2007-02-01

When I heard samples from this CD, I really wanted to get it. However, when I did and listened the full versions I did not seem to like them that much. There are several pices that I totally do not care for, a few I really like (especially, Bach's pieces), and some I got used to. Overall, I like the CD, but not as much as I though I would.

5 out of 5 stars A gleaming vision of brass sound.......2005-10-18

The Canadian Brass have been a lively and fun force in music for decades, since being brought together in Toronto 'by a gleaming vision of brass sound'. They are now world famous, having delighted and dazzled people in concerts all over the globe. One of the problems for a group such as this is the lack of repertoire readily available, so the group has become expert at arranging pieces for other instruments for their ensemble. They have also commissioned a good number of pieces of their performance.

One such commission is found on this recording, entitled 'The Well-Tampered Bach', a take-off on the Bach work 'The Well-Tempered Clavier'. This is a setting of various pieces by J.S. Bach for brass quintet and drums, worked by Luther Henderson for the ensemble's 1985 appearance in Toronto. Henderson is a frequent arranger and composer for the Canadian Brass, having also put together the 'Tuba Tiger Rag', reminiscent of the World War I era, and jazz pieces like 'Beale Street Blues'.

More traditional composers are represented in arrangement for brass, such as a more standard arrangement for Bach's Fugue in G minor, Mozart's Turkish Rondon, and pieces from Gabrieli, Vivaldi, Strauss, Rossini, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Pachelbel.

The disc has a wonderful blend of pieces classical and modern, 'proper' composition and traditional/folk inspiration, and a very lively and powerful presentation of all the music.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2001-07-20

This CD is amazing. It's a shame more people don't know about this incredible group. I'm a brass player and I just learned of these guys a few months ago. If you like classical music or brass music, this is a must own!

5 out of 5 stars Essential CD.......2000-12-12

If you like the sound of brass and if your tastes run the gamut from Gabrieli to Handy, with stops hither and yon, this CD is essential to your collection. In it, the Canadian Brass demonstrate their amazing ability to play the early Baroque masters right along side the early jazz masters -- and make it seem perfectly natural! In the process, a bit of Rimsky-Korsakov, Mozart and Lord knows what gets thrown in for good measure. Plus, they play a rousing rendition of Bach's "Little Fugue in G Minor." If the music on this CD doesn't get you going, you need to immediately go to the ER at the nearest hospital!

5 out of 5 stars The Best "Best of" the Canadian Brass.......1999-10-26

If you buy one Canadian Brass CD, buy this one. It contains the widest variety of musical eras and styles. Our favorite CB song, Beale Street Blues is hard to find, but on this CD. There are serious, classical selections and fun songs such as the "Tuba Tiger Rag" and "Flight of the Tuba Bee". This is Brass Quintet music at its best!

5 out of 5 stars Grimethorpe is Never Grim!.......2001-01-19

West Yorkshire in England consistantly produces eight to ten of the best brass bands in all the world. The Grimethorpe Collery Band's "Melody Shop" demonstrates why this band is always counted among the finest. This particular CD offers the listener a wide variety of musical tidbits. For the lovers of classical music, Grimethorpe's rendition of the Galop from Rossini's "William Tell" will certainly put you in that Lone Ranger mood!(This piece was heard in the movie "Brassed Off" with Grimethorpe providing the soundtrack for the fictional Grimley Band featured in the movie.)For 70s fans, the band does a hard-charging version of Jimmy Webb's "MacArthur Park."

There is even a hymn on the CD. Barrie Gott's "Lightwalk" (from the old hymn tune "Walk in the Light) actually comes out of the Salvation Army Brass Band literature. I doubt that most listeners ever heard a hymn swing like this one!

My personal favorite is the cut of "Lohengrin: Act 3 Prelude" by Wagner. It is hard to believe that this is a brass band- and I mean ALL BRASS- playing with such fire and technical accuracy. What a group! What a piece! What a wonderful combination!

If you own no brass band CDs, this is a good place to start a collection. It listens "easy," has some tunes you know, and is consistantly entretaining.

5 out of 5 stars A disc of rare perfection.......2003-06-08

I have had this disc for a year and still play it several times a week. Suede's other two discs are excellent. This one surpasses them by a mile. The songs range from playful to heartbreaking, and every one is perfect. Suede also provides trumpet and guitar solos on several cuts. Anyone who has had the good fortune to see her live must own this CD. Anyone who is a stranger to Suede and her music owes to him-or her-self to check out this wonderful performer.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Blues singer..........2001-12-31

Imagine a cross between Ella Fitzgerald and Bette
Midler, throw in a little Rosie Clooney, add a dash of
Louis Armstrong, and you might get some idea of
Suede's unique musical talents and abilities.

My Dad was a jazz piano player in the 1950's and 1960's
and I grew up around some of the great jazz giants.
Seeing Suede live and hearing her incredible scatting
definitely brings me back to the great talent from years ago!

This disc, part of Decca's Entartete Musik series of composers suppressed by the Nazis, features Stefan Wolpe's political theater works of the 1920s, enabling a more complete picture of his artistic development. Zeus und Elida is a Dada-esque work that Wolpe accurately labeled a "musical grotesque." The story line has Zeus retiring to earth and obsessing over Elida, a whore. Things go frantically downhill from there, to music derived from dances ranging from the Charleston and tango to csárdás. Schoene Geschichten is a surrealistic chamber opera of seven brief vignettes, the text of some reading like Abbott and Costello routines. The disc's last work includes a ghostly choral chant, Stimmen aus dem Massengrab ("Voices from the Mass Grave"), a chilling augur of the coming horrors. --Dan Davis

This collection carries the same title and graphics as the Peter Levinson biography of Harry James to be published this October by Oxford Press. It contains 16 of Harry James' greatest records, made between 1955 and '58 with Helen Forrest, Willie Smith, Corky Corcoran and Buddy Rich among the cast and arrangements by Jack Mathias, Jimmy Mundy, Ernie Wilkins and others. From hi-fi remakes of his '30s hits like "Trumpet Blues" and "Ciribiribin" to contemporary charts like "Blues On A Count" and "Barn 12, " this set covers the entire career of this amazing trumpeter and bandleader.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a companion to the boook Trumpet Blues - the Capitol sides.......2007-05-17

Harry James fronted a big band in the 50's that was, arguably, the equal of the Woody Herman and Basie outfits. This CD, done as a companion to the troubling biography of the same name, features Capitol sides recorded from 1955 to 1958, and does include material that jazz critics hated him for; on balance, though, much of this release is straight ahead big band swing that is notable for James' performances alone. James Session is big band rockin' blues at it's best, evoking memories of both the Basie sax section as well as the cohesiveness and drive of Benny Goodman. Moten Swing remained in the James book until his death, along with Two O'Clock Jump, both excellent takes. The two standouts are Barn 12 and Blues On A Count, taken from the Capitol LP Wild About Harry featuring ex-Lunceford alumnus Willie Smith on alto and Buddy Rich on drums. Willow Weep For Me, arranged by Ernie Wilkins, is an eight-bar blues featuring Jack Perciful on piano and the muted trumpet of Harry with some wonderful ensemble playing by the sections. While there are other James recordings with many of the same charts, these are superior in my opinion. The liner notes are an unexpected plus, including comments from Doc Severinsen. Until they release Wild About Harry as a solo CD, or someone manages to find and release The Jazz Connoisseur in its entirety, this will do nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs sounding even greater!.......2007-02-04

Yes, these are 1950s hi-fidelity recordings of Harry James playing the original charts of his older hits from the 1930s and 1940s. But modern recording technology is worthless if WHAT you're recording wasn't good in the first place. A bad song by a bad performer isn't going to get better just because you re-record them in stereo. In the the case of Trumpet Blues: The Best of Harry James, the original material and the talent of the artists was top notch, so these "modern" recordings from the 1950s are simply great! My trumpet playing dad owned the original hits on 78 rpm records. He then bought these tracks on vinyl albums when they came out in the '50s. I've now purchased this CD and I am VERY satisfied with the sound, the talent and the material. Sure, Harry's fans can debate the finer points of whether particular nuances of the original performances were carried forward to these recordings. On the other hand, an argument can be made that these recordings provide new touches that make the originals even better. My own subjective opinion is that these Trumpet Blues recordings are well worth owning because they are an honest attempt to be faithful to the originals and the sound is head and shoulders above the fidelity of the original recordings. The sound is bright and there is great "presence" to the recording. It seems to me that if the performers involved were satisfied with these re-recordings of original hits (and from what I've read, they were), we should be satisfied, as well. There are plenty of Harry James recordings to own (and I own many), but I would say this one is a "must have."

5 out of 5 stars Peerless Trumpet Playing and Big Band!!.......2006-12-26

Why was it that Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen, Clark Terry and Adolph Herseth all have sung praises of Harry James? One need only buy this CD to find out. Although many of the songs included are reworkings of his earlier hits using modern recording technology, the updates are truly thrilling! Take a listen to "James Session" and hear how one can be astounded by just a trumpeter and a drummer playing. A solid CD throughout, and when you get done with this, check out the "Jazz Masters" CD on Verve which explores HJ's forays into hard bop ala Clifford Brown and Fats Navarro. Then dig way into your pockets and pick up "Bandstand Memories" which features unreleased "air checks" that HJ and his band would play prior to going "live" on the radio broadcasts in the '40's. When you listen to these and realize he was playing these charts LIVE without a net, you will shake your head in wonder.

Harry James was...and still is....unfairly judged by critics who have a hard time with a jazz artist who was willing to play what the paying public wanted to hear instead of what the critics wanted. The thing was, HJ could have it both ways without diluting either sensibility. Impeccable musicianship, taste, technique and execution, and a set of chops that have yet to be truly equalled. And I say that with all due respect to Faddis, Chase, Ferguson, Gozzo and Anderson. Clark Terry once exclaimed "Harry was a BITCH!". Doc Severinsen recalls, "Nothing was ever hard for Harry".

As a connosseuer of HJ recordings, I can state the sides included here are sharp, well balanced, and in some cases exceed the quality of the originals. You will not be disappointed, whether you are a novice listener or a seasoned fan.

5 out of 5 stars THE ORIGINAL AND STILL THE BEST !.......2004-03-14

This compilation came out in 1999, the same year the top selling James biography, TRUMPET BLUES, THE LIFE OF HARRY JAMES, by Peter J. Levinson was published. It is a compilation of some of Harry's top selling singles which just happened to include some fabulous vocals by Helen Forrest, one of the many top vocalists who recorded with the legendary trumpeter.

Harry James was, without question, the undisputed king of the trumpet and the most commercially successful big band leader of the '40's, '50's, '60's, "70's and early "80's. As a trumpeter, he was without peer. Long an admirer of, but unlike, Louis Armstrong and Mugsy Spanier, James had an unmatchable mastery of his instrument, having studied long and diligently with his trumpet playing dad, Everette. Tutored in all the repertoire of the world's great trumpet players, James was a virtuoso at the age of 14. At 16 he was on the road with territory bands playing the lead book. At 20 he was hired as the lead and jazz chair with the Benny Goodman band. At 23 he was leading his own big band. In his brilliant jazz soloing, James incorporated the basic early blues style of Armstrong, Spanier and Bix Beiderbecke with a dazzling technique. He went on to win the "Jazz Trumpet" and "Band" category in the DOWNBEAT and the METRONOME magazine artist's polls for a number of years. He was the idol of such later diverse talents as Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen, Miles Davis, Arturo Sandoval and Clifford Brown. He was the star of his band with all his arrangements built around his incomparable trumpet style. Starting out as principally a hot jazz band he could not get bookings at top hotels and supper clubs that favored quieter "sweet" bands. He then developed the philosophy to always keep his music "danceable". James selected a favorite Judy Garland ballad, "You Made Me Love You", and it became a mega hit in 1941. From there on the James star rose to unprecedented heights in record sales and films becoming a bigger and longer lasting big band attraction than his other top peers: Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Woody Herman and Artie Shaw. In the mid fifties James went back to a more Basie styled jazz band, hiring many of the Basie arrangers, to build a blues oriented big band that played concerts, television specials, colleges, jazz festivals and many world tours.

This album gives the uninitiated listener a cross section of James' versatility as a leader, stylist and writer-arranger. His own composition, "Trumpet Blues" is extrordinary in it's power, musicality and variations,a true classic. "James Session", another James original, hearkens back to Benny Goodman's "Sing, Sing, Sing". A real barnburner! All of these are 1955 recreations of the note for note originals first cut in the '40's. Several others, "Blues On A Count" and "Barn 12" are from the late '50's. "Ciribirbin" is the ballad version of his famous theme song. Many of his later recordings featured the jazz version of the theme. All in all, this is a great "teaser" album for the neophyte James fan. The sound is great!

For the James devotee or "new fan" I would recommend Harry James & His Orchestra, STRICTLY INSTRUMENTAL (Memoir 534), Harry James THE SILVER COLLECTION (Verve 823229-2), Harry James JAZZ MASTERS 55 (Verve) and Harry James ONE NIGHT STAND (Collectors Choice). These four albums will give the listener some of the best of Harry's great trumpet and big band recordings.

3 out of 5 stars Not his original, golden material, but OK.......2003-01-12

I picked this CD up because of the lure of Helen Forrest, one of my favorite songbirds from the big band era. She only sings on a trio of tunes (including a reprise of James' big wartime hit, "It's Been A Long. Long Time"), but it doesn't really matter. The vocal numbers are swell, and Forrest fans will be pleased to hear them. Still, these latter-day swing sessions (from 1955-'58) lack the fresh, light feel of James' classic 'Forties hits... Instead, the arrangements are too brash and punchy, with a muscularity that more often than not simply overpowers the melody. OK for the Eisenhower-era crowd who may have enjoyed these tracks the first time around, though younger fas might want to look to the older material first.

5 out of 5 stars Just As Its Title Says: CLASSICS IN AMERICA.......2004-08-19

OK, so all the "great composers" maybe weren't from Austria, Germany, or Italy. This CD, right here, justifies the quite justifable elitest attitude (also known as "Patriotism"). Maybe another title, "America's Greatest Hits" might have been appropriate, but then, a dunce or two would be whining for "A Horse With No Name," so "Classics" is it. Just look at who and what is represented on these cds: George Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" (you might remember THAT if you saw "Fantasia 2000") Leonard Bernstein conducts his own beautiful "Dances From West Side Story" (he also conducted Gershwin). There's John Phillip Sousa's "Stars And Stripes Forever," a piece of music so beautiful, so astoundingly patriotism-inducing that it'd even make a.....democrat stand up with his hand over his heart! The ubquitous (and greatly missed) Bernstein conducts Ives' "Central Park In The Dark," and "The Unanswered Question." And that's just the FIRST CD! CAN you improve on perfection? CD #2 is a resounding YES! Here's Berbstein again conducting Samuel Barber's "Adagio For String," and Aaron Copland's beautiful "Appalachin Spring." And here's where the rest of the cd hits you like an enormous amyl-nitrate rush: Seiji Ozawa conducts the San Francisco Orchestra performing William Russo's unvbelievable "Three Piece For Blues Band And Orchestra." Ozawa, the story goes, enjoyed "going out for a cold one" after orchestra rehearsals, and he was especially was fond of a local blues band, The Seigel-Schwall Band. He commissioned his composer friend, William Russo, to compose something that the Band could could perfom with the orchestra. And I know you're thinking, "OH yeah, Procol Harum Live In Edmonton, 'Conquistador,' yeah." NO: As much as I ADORE Procol Harum, there is NO comparison! The Seigel-Schwall Band was strictly a BLUES band, and Russo - whew! composed three pieces that not only altered, but definitely enhanced the Band's electric blues. Like I'm so fond of saying,"By Alteration, Enhances!" My brother is a classically trained symphonic musician, and one time - wow, 25 years ago - he was playing "Three Pieces" on my battered stereo while I was in the shower. And I couldn't WAIT to "dry off," and run screaming in the romm, "WAHT IS THAT YOU'RE PLAYING?" Trust me on this folks, you won't believe it either - and you'll thank Heaven that it's on a CD, because if it was an album, you'd wear the grroves right out by replaying it over and over. And OLD ON, it ain't finished yet: the remainder of the CD features Arthur Feilder conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra performin 3 of the fantastically-talented but almost unknown, Scott Joplin. You remember that great piano music in the movie,"The Sting?" That was Scott Joplin - and he's represented here with "The Entertainer" (I dare you to keep from tapping your right foot when you listen to this),"The Sugar Cane Rag," and the "Maple Leaf Rag." The cd closes with an undiscovered GEM, excerpts fro Joplin's opera "Tremonshia."
This is pure, undiluted AMERICAN music, people. PLEASE do yourself a favor and put down the metal, the "alt," the rapping, the country 'n western, and even my beloved Rock and Roll for
about 2 and a half hours of some of the most incredible - and not THE LEAST BIT BORING! - Classical Music. Music that AMERICA was responsible for!

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Wait.......2000-12-05

It took all six weeks for this album to show up at my door, and believe me, it was well worth the wait. Brian Lynch is an amazing trumpet player with the ability to successfully mix strong technique with true feeling. Brian possesses lightning speed, dexterity, and the ability to play in either register with elegant ease. He plays each song from his toes, giving it his all for the simple joy of the music. When I first heard his cover of Thad Jones' Elusive while driving, and had to pullover to give my whole attention to this song.

But, the quartet is not just about showcasing Brian's chops. With Mulgrew Miller on piano, Essiet Essiet on bass and Carl Allen on drums, this is a complete band. Many times, Brian steps back to let his band mates shine through, and they do. Everyone in the quartet is a complete musician, and their love of the music can be heard in each note they play.

"Tribute to the Trumpet Masters" is a mix of covers and original compositions in the style of some of Brian's favorite trumpeters that have influenced him over his career of thirty years. The album is mixed with upbeat tempo like "Woody Shaw" and slow, soulful songs like Freddie Hubbard's "Eclipse" and Lee Morgan's "Search for the New Land". This album has the most power and soul of any in my extensive collection, and is my favorite to date.

      5 out of 5 stars Actually deserves 7 stars!.......2003-11-23

If possible I can easily award 7 Stars since it's a Holy number!
Even Sir Robert would have agreed...Because I believe he spoke of this 1975 recording several times as one of his favorites!! When we recorded that 4th night of the Christmas With Robert Shaw Concerts, all of us choristers were tired. We quickly came to attention when our conductor said, "There is sizzling in some darn lights up there!" We were surprised that he did not use the other popular 4-letter word beginning with D___!

That was my last evening to rehearse or record with our creative genius of a Choral Maestro. Since early in his time of coming to Atlanta, I had wished for the privilege of singing under him for more than just a single week's workshop at Princeton...so here I came every Monday from Marietta to enjoy a choral feast!

Although Donald Neuen, along with Greg Jessup of newest Mormon Tabernacle Fame are two Examples of Choral finesse, I still hear Sir Robert's voice when his Vivaldi, "Gloria" his favorite Bach
"B-Minor Mass," or Berlioz's "Requiem" ended with..."Well-done, People!" Much like his Biography is titled Dear "People...Robert Shaw."

This reprinted CD from December, 1975 is a wonderfully lasting testimony to the fabulous choral excellence of Mr. Shaw Himself. Even after singing with him dozens of times he was always to me, MR. Shaw. So when Advent rolls around in Nov-Dec I break out "Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light; "Kyrie Eleison and Dona Nobis Pacem"; "Shepherds' Farewell to the Holy Family!" What superb glorious memories they conjure up in the mind and heart of this eternally older Chorister... Sincerely, Retired Chaplain Fred W. Hood

This is an outstanding album - my favorite of the season.

5 out of 5 stars Loved the LP, the CD must be great.......2002-10-30

I purchased this album in the late 70's as a 2 record LP. It is the only LP I still have as I was hoping that they would release it on CD. What a delight to finally discover it on CD! I am a lover of Christmas music without end and this is my very favorite. The music and the performances are simply glorious.

5 out of 5 stars the real spirit of Christmas.......2001-11-23

This CD has been a family favorite since it was released. I'm glad I finally have my own copy! It is incredibly moving and gorgeous. No sappy pop hits, just extremely glorious music.

5 out of 5 stars Another of my 5-6 Christmas favorites!.......1999-12-03

In short, this CD is fabulous! If you like choral music, Robert Shaw just does it perfectly in this CD. From the hushed entry of the voices over the distant bells in O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, through the exceptional Gloria in Excelsis, past the Et in Terra Pax (my personal Valium --the music takes you down and down until every muscle is limp--try it with earphones), to the Dona Nobis Pacem and Hallelujah, it's a glor-i-ous trip. (Unfortunately, the double-album version of this collection with twice as many pieces, entitled Nativity, no longer seems to be available.)
