5 out of 5 stars Unheralded genius.......2007-01-30

This is the first Sidney Bechet CD I've purchased and it surely won't be the last. I've gone all these years knowing little of him, finally checking out his sound after seeing that he made Woody Allen's celebrity itunes list. The man was an absolute master with the soprano saxophone and clarinet. Moreover in this collection of songs ranging from 1939 to 1953 he plays in quintets and sextets featuring such excellent musicians as Art Hodges on piano and Wild Bill Davidson on the cornet. But it is Bechet who shines. His style variably evokes New Orleans Jazz, the Blues traditional jazz and a hint of swing. Like Ben Webster, Lester Young and other geniuses, Bechet creates a mood with his horn. It's hard to listen to while doing anything else because you'll want to sit back and enjoy -- and enjoy you will.

4 out of 5 stars the soul of music.......2006-04-02

As a younger listener I have tended to stay away from jazz in this period (20's) because alot of it seemed to have herky-jerky rythmns that reminded me of the 30's and 40's cartoons that had goofy, grinning barn animals playing various instruments, so hearing jazz from this time period became hard to listen to without laughing myself silly. For some reason this album does not remind me of the barn animals...and i really like it! The dixie-land blues is thick throughout and, man, this is where funk came from! I'm usually not a fan of too much vibrato, but with bechet it sounds tremendously soulful and the selections wouldn't be complete without it. One of the best blues tracks of all-time is "blue horizon" (the other might be "red house" by jimi) which is alone worth the $18 you would pay for a 10 track cd at the mall. But there are many other excellent tracks on here, like the superior version of "all of me." The other musicians, besides the excellent bechet, play tight and soulful as well. This album is solid through and through.

4 out of 5 stars I'm looking for "Les Ognoins" by Sidney Bechet.......2001-11-08

My father-in-law is trying to get hold of a Sidney Bechet track called Les Ognoins. Does anyone know on which album it can be found or is the album called Les Ognoins. Help please!

5 out of 5 stars Great Bechet.......2001-10-10

I love this Sidney Bechet cd. I bought it knowing nothing else by him except "Blue Horizon", but I was delighted with all of it. I love the way "Porto Rico" starts out dark and exotic and ends up light. Full of strong melodies, exquisitely played . . . If you like early New Orleans jazz in all it's smokey and warm magnificence, you won't be disappointed in this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-01-25

This is an excellent batch of Bechet performances. "Summertime", "Muskrat Ramble" and "When the Saints Go Marching In" are the best tracks in an overall excellent disk.

Sidney Bechet was one of the great pioneers of jazz, a New Orleans clarinetist of unmatched improvisational creativity who developed a highly personal voice on the difficult soprano saxophone. He could soar above an ensemble or develop lead lines with a power that rivaled trumpeters. Although he was the first great jazz soloist to record--on 1923's "Wild Cat Blues" with Clarence Williams's Blue Five--until the late 1930s, Bechet's recordings cast him invariably as a sideman. He wouldn't achieve the kind of fame that was his due until he settled in France in the 1950s. This is an excellent introduction to his work, ranging from that first extant recording to 1947. Along the way, there are early meetings with Louis Armstrong and recordings like "Shag," a spirited performance in the New Orleans ensemble style with trumpeter Tommy Ladnier and the New Orleans Foot Warmers. Some of Bechet's best work of the '30s appeared under the name of singer Noble Sissle, even when Sissle wasn't present, as on "Viper Mad," but it's Bechet's distinctive work that gives these period pieces their enduring significance. While he spent much of his career cast in the New Orleans style, Bechet was an innovator, using electric guitar in the band for his own 1938 classics "Chant in the Night" and "Jungle Blues." He finally had something like a hit when he recorded Gershwin's "Summertime" in 1939, the rich wail of his soprano both plaintive and commanding. The same distinctive way with a popular song is evident on "Love for Sale" with just a rhythm section, while there are other 1940s recordings with a host of distinguished collaborators, such as trumpeter Muggsy Spanier and trombonist Vic Dickenson. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Only so-so compilation.......2007-03-25

I normally love most things Ken Burns, but this was rather disappointing...the selections here are unremarkable and even dull often, just don't have the effortless joyful schwing of Bechet's best work but rather seem too analytical and academic.

I'd much more recommend "The Legendary Sidney Bechet" and "The Best of Sidney Bechet" for those looking for an intro to Bechet's special genius.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Soprano Sax and you suck Kenny G.......2005-06-04

I hate you Kenny G. You ruined a once great instrument played by such titans of jazz as John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter,

AND SIDNEY BECHET....

Sidney Bechet was the first great improviser in jazz. Yes, yes, Satchmo was the most famous improviser of the 20's scene, but it most likely was the child prodigy Bechet to be the first with his wild New Orleans clarinet and soprano sax. I think that this is a wonderful compilation of the great man and it is some of the best solos out of New Orleans which made Satch take notes from his good friend Sidney.

I CURSE YOU, KENNY G TO HAVE CORNS THE SIZE OF GUAVAMELONS (WHICH LOOK LIKE RHUBARBS) ON YOUR FEET THAT HURT WORSE THAN THE CORNS WHICH PLAGUE AND TORMENT CHARLES.

5 out of 5 stars A different world ... nostalgic and timeless all at once.......2005-05-29

This compilation is not perfect, there are about 8 sounds with him as a sideman, and this comilation does not go into the last decade of his career, where he was recorded on tape (rather than 78rpm). With the negatives out of the way, this is Sydney Bechet, possibly one of the top 10 soloist ever in american music. What he could do with one note in this idom, can only be matched by few (Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, Louis Armstrong). His vibrato was so expressive, and massive in it feeling, that he told a story in a way words never could. This all sounds poetic, but take a listen to the last 10 songs on this cd and see for yourself. This is where the original spirit of jazz was born, group improsation. This was generally lost until avant garde groups/artist like Art of Ensemble of Chicago returned it.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Soprano - EVER!.......2003-07-17

One is grateful to Ken Burns calling attention to Jazz with his series and, there it ends! Sidney Bechet is without a doubt the greatest soprano player ever. His power was absolutely amazing. Pity the trumpet players who had to play with him, he could, and did, drown them out. I saw and heard him in person in the late 50s and I have never forgotten that evening! If it wasn't for Sidney, we wouldn't have Hodges, Wilber and many others. I have an awful lot of Bechet on recordings and I never tire of him!

5 out of 5 stars How a soprano sax should sound.......2001-09-27

This was another great jazz artist that I didn't know much about prior to this Ken Burn's release. I never thought that I could love the sound of the soprano sax this much. Up until this album, whenever I thought of soprano sax, Kenny G and his mind numbing music would come to mind, and I would cringe. But, this album opened up a whole new world of music to me .. now THIS is how a soprano sax should sound. It is beautiful. Sidney Bechet is (or was) a true genius, the way he made the horn almost operatic in sound, with the wonderful throbbing vibratos. No wonder he was sometimes billed as "The Talking Saxophone". There is such depth and emotion in his playing. I highly recommend this album to all jazz fans. The booklet includes photos and an interesting essay.

Most of this material was previously available in the package Sidney Bechet: Master Musician. Recorded between 1932 and 1941, these sessions capture one of the true men of genius in jazz history, at the top of his game in several awesome group contexts. The hot licks of "I Found a New Baby," "Shag," and "Maple Leaf Rag" are traded by Bechet and trumpeter Tommy Ladnier, co-leaders of the New Orleans Feetwarmers. On "Weary Blues" they are joined by reedman Mezz Mezzrow. On "The Sheik of Araby," from 1941, Bechet is a one-man band, overdubbing all the parts--clarinet, soprano and tenor sax, piano, bass, and drums. --John Swenson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An awesome artist.......2004-10-31

A short while ago I found a 4-disc collection of Louis Armstrong's hot fives and sevens. Seeing the gems that were in this collection, I was surprised at the low price. Shortly thereafter I came upon this collection. It has been said that if any New Orleans soloist could ever match Louis Armstrong, it was Sidney Bechet. His work on Blue Horizon alone would have been enough for me to justify getting this collection, but it is filled with dozens of wonderful selections from the career of this musical genius.

4 out of 5 stars Missing Alot of Classics.......2004-03-13

Where is the incomprable All Of Me and others...Hardly a complete box set.

5 out of 5 stars True jazz classics.......2002-11-27

I'm kind of surprised that no one else has reviewed this great collection so far. Sidney Bechet was one of the great figures in the history of jazz, and many of the songs included in this compilation are genuine classics. The sound quality is also excellent considering the dates that they were recorded. When Bechet performs old standards (Summertime, Limehouse Blues, St. Louis Blues, etc.), his versions are often among the best ever recorded. Duke Ellington himself said that Bechet's version of "The Mooche" was the best he'd heard, including the one by his own band (which was a classic in its own right). I'm sure that anyone who enjoys early jazz would love this great 4-CD set.

Sidney Bechet settled permanently in France in 1949, making only occasional trips back to the United States to record and tour. This CD pairs two Blue Note sessions led by the pioneer soprano saxophonist during those visits, including his last American studio recordings. Though both bands feature Bechet in the classic frontline of New Orleans and Chicago jazz with trumpet and trombone, each group gets a distinct character from one of the great bassists of early jazz. The first nine tracks, from 1951, present Bechet in the midst of dedicated New Orleans traditionalists. Trumpeter Sidney de Paris provides sterling leads and Pops Foster's slap bass is literally popping, creating a mood that's both stately and joyous.

Trombonist Jimmy Archey, a veteran of the Kid Ory band, is the one holdover on eight tracks from a 1953 session, which is a relative update on the form. Trumpeter Jonah Jones adds fluid swing and pianist Buddy Weed some near-boppish harmonies, but it's Walter Page, creator of the "walking bass" style, who really drives the band with a different kind of force on tunes like "Sweet Georgia Brown." Whatever the setting, Bechet is a marvel, his broad sound at once sparkling and mellow. Whether he's exploring the deep blues of "Naughty Sweetie" and "Black and Blue," or playing with puckish wit and ebullient spirit on "Ballin' the Jack" and "Deep Dong Daddy," Bechet is one of the defining instrumental voices of jazz, delighting in musical surroundings that are at once congenial and inspiring. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars MILESTONE IN TRADITIONAL JAZZ.......2006-09-24

This recording is truly a milestone Traditional Jazz recording. No, this is a milestone Jazz recording ! I can't urge you enough to buy this recording !! This is really special. You will be in tears after hearing and think you might not have not made this purchase. DO IT !!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars surprising - a broad spectrum of "dixieland" styles.......2001-02-21

Although this disk could be referred to as "dixieland" it strikes me as having a wide spectrum of different approaches that musical style. Although I like dixieland music, I generally get bored after 2 of 3 cuts because I find that the music played by any one group is often stylistically repetitious. I was really surprised by this disk because there were so many different approaches to the music. Each time a new cut would start I found myself paying close attention to what they were doing. It never became boring background music.
