Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
Nice cuban music.......2007-03-15
I should add that I speak Spanish fairly well and therefore understand the lyrics, and am generally an enthusiast of Hispanic culture and music. The story of this worthy project and how this was recorded are interesting and I suspect some reviewers are moved more by sentiment than just on the merits of the music, some of which seems very middle-of-the-road to me, albeit pleasant enough for casual listening.

For those of you who have never listened to this style of music, don't just listen to it once as you could compare it to the first 3 olives you have ever eaten.
The first one shocks your taste with a layered complexity that is both sharp and mellow, leaving you with a look on your face that says "what just happened?".
The second takes you back to the memory of your first taste, and enjoying re-living the sensation, you start looking for more.
The third confirms your interests and instils an infatuation with something unique, powerful, and good for the heart and soul, that will be played over and over again.
Absolutely fantastic!.......2007-01-11

As good as tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano's recent quartet albums featuring piano master Hank Jones were, they didn't prepare us for the sublimity of this two-man encounter. Duets Live has it all: brilliant and spirited individual playing, exceptional rapport, a terrific mix of songs and a luminous awareness of jazz in all its varied forms. What makes Lovano and Jones so compatible, even though they are separated by more than three decades, is the ease with which they each straddle and move back and forth across the line beween modern and pre-modern (in this, Lovano recalls Coleman Hawkins, one of the giants Jones backed). Much of the material is steeped in classic bop, but Jones points the way back to an earlier golden era with his lambent sparkle and Lovano comes at songs like "Charlie Chan" (his salute to Charlie Parker), Thelonious Monk's "Four in One," and Tadd Damerson's "Soultrane" from consistently fresh angles even as he applies his classic husky sound. Still a force at 88, Jones elegantly frees three of his late brother Thad's tunes from their big band trappings and in the solo spotlight pulls out stops on the standard, "Oh! Look at me Now!" It's a performance of gusty expression and poetic delicacy, slyness and warmth, and endless smiles. Is it too much to ask for a volume two? --Lloyd SachsCustomer Reviews:

A MAGNIFICENT DUO: HANK & JOE IN A TIMELESS, BEAUTIFUL JAZZ PERFORMANCE.......2007-05-13
The 'Pieces De Resistance', the best of the best, are wall to wall equally-captivating performances which proceed without letdown from song to song. But I especially like the fire by both players on "Lady Luck", written by Hank's brother, Thad, and "Kids Are Pretty People". I also love Joe's nod to older tenor players with his 'Ben Webster-ish' tenor sax effects on "Lullaby" and his nod to Yardbird Parker on "Charlie Chan", so reminiscent of Miles' "Half Nelson". Hank gets two solo bites of this CD apple with a wonderful, shimmering "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin' " and "Oh! Look At Me Now", which is fitting since "Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola" is known for great solo piano performances. Joe gets off what is probably his best solo, alone and later with Hank, on a swirling performance of Monks' "Four In One", blowing hot, liquid strings of notes. Pure, timeless, magnificent jazz music! Encore, gentlemen! My Highest Recommendation. Five ENJOYABLE Stars!!

Those who don't know any better are apt to dismiss Deborah Cox as another R&B/dance diva determined to cling to the spotlight by whatever means necessary, including a giant genre-leap. Those who've been listening carefully, though, will check their doubts at Destination Moon's door. On this, her fourth disc, Cox sidles up to jazz--the jazz of her role model Dinah Washington--with subtlety and surefooted grace; along the way, she makes something of a masterpiece. From classics such as the title track to lesser-known but deeply felt compositions such as "I Don't Hurt Anymore," she avoids the temptation to rub a modern sheen over these songs and settles contentedly into the mood Washington carved for them instead. "This Bitter Earth" gets the "mm-hmm" treatment Dinah delivered so well, and "Misery" and "New Blowtop Blues" don't dream of belying their blueswoman roots. Best of all are the more delicate tracks: "Look to the Rainbow" captivates with a contemplative sadness, and "Blue Skies" is a natural wonder as beautiful as a dose of pure azure on a cloudless day. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
Platinum-selling recording artist Deborah Cox reinterprets the classic songs of Dinah Washington on her Decca debut, Destination Moon. Destination Moon thrusts the R&B/dance diva into whole new territory, showcasing her range and scope as an artist capable of tackling jazz, blues and "big-band" with ease and confidence. Deborah Cox's first exposure to Washington came very early, when she was a little girl. "I first became aware of Dinah when I was growing up, when I was about 8 or 9 years old" she says. "A lot of jazz was played about the house. I heard my mother playing a 45 of "This Bitter Earth" -- this first song I had ever heard from Dinah. It was the richness and the tonality of her voice that I gravitated to." For the arrangements and the production, Deborah turned to the highly-versatile New York-based music man Rob Mounsey, whose credits with such diverse performers include Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin and Tony Bennett to name a few. The record was made live in the studio, with 40 musicians in the same room with her, playing and singing in real time under Mounsey's direction. "I'm doing this to broaden people's awareness of what I can do and also for the sheer love of her music." As a result, Deborah's homage to Dinah Washington does not lean overwhelmingly toward one particular style. It was designed from the beginning to be a compendium of several of Dinah's idioms - the big-band swing of "All Of Me" and "Destination Moon," swaggering R&B ("I Don't Hurt Anymore)," the blues that earned her the misleading nickname "Queen of the Blues" ("Misery," "New Blowtop Blues"), the lush ballads that put her on the jukeboxes of Middle America ("What A Diff'rence A Day Made," "This Bitter Earth").Customer Reviews:

Jazz & Blues with Deborah !.......2007-06-25
While her hits have generally called on her to be very angry or very sad, these classic songs allow her to be at turns gentle, sassy, reflective, happy and wry. The productions and arrangements are reminiscent of the golden era of era of Billie, Sarah, Dinah and others, but contain enough surprises to keep them from sounding old-fashioned.
Deborah - who shifted from pop siren to Broadway star with Aida, further expands her range to include jazz, blues and big band. Cox and her backing musicians were recorded live in the studio, playing and singing in real time. The effect pays off as Cox accurately renders each song with her own textures.
No one expects Cox to abandon the dance-floor (she just released a new dance track with Tony Moran), but her latest offering "Destination Moon" allows her to explore another musical landscape with glowing results.
Deborah takes the jazz route on "Destination Moon", a tribute to one of her all-time heroines, Dinah (The Queen) Washington. Whether you view it as a tribute album, a jazz debut or just a collection of good music, this album succeeds on all levels. From the swinging big-band to piano-voice ballads, Cox captures the essence of Washington, yet adds her own touches. Washington's milestone recordings are here. Cox gives "What a Difference a Day Makes" a mid-tempo turn with strings, getting the Queen's innocent voicing, but injecting more feeling into the lyrics.
"Baby, You've Got What It Takes" comes at us as a fast shuffle. Cox fills "This Bitter Earth" with Washington tics - the up-speak at the end of phrases, the self-satisfied "mmh-hmmm" after a line. Washington first made her name as a blues singer, and Cox lays the blues on in "Misery" and "New Blowtop Blues", that classic mean-woman lament where she sings of her run-in with a jealous ".45-packin' mama."
On "Destination Moon", focusing on Washington, the jazz singer, dishing out several of the standards most closely associated with her career, Deborah also wraps her powerful pipes around gems like "I Don't Hurt Anymore", "September in the Rain" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes".
Producer/arranger Rob Mounsey pulled out all the stops for these sessions, surrounding Cox with a 40-piece orchestra that laid down a gorgeous foundation for her to build on. And she did just that.
In an interview conducted to promote her new album, , Cox said she recorded this record for two reasons -- to pay tribute to an artist who had so inspired her and to show that she, like Washington, was capable of doing a lot more musically than some people might have expected.
She succeeded on both counts. It's very nice work.
Think long, rainy afternoons, dinners for two and early mornings on the patio.

Versions gathers 18 Thievery Corporation remixes from across a music spectrum that only the most eclectic could love. The vinyl-popping digital duo embraces '60s psychedelia with the Doors and '60s kitsch with Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. They put them all into the mixmaster, usually adding the downtempo jazzy electro-lounge beats upon which they built their early reputation. Alpert's "Lemon Tree," taken from the recent Whipped Cream & Other Delights Rewhipped, is a vintage noirish mood piece, but this doesn't always work. Fear of Pop's "In Love" becomes a tedious vamp, and the Doors' "Strange Days" is a missed opportunity squandered on a Cagian "indeterminacy" moment, like two bands in different rooms. But the Thievery formula usually works wonders on even the most unlikely material. There's an Indian twang to many of these mixes, including the Middle East-via-Bombay grooves of Trans-Global Underground, the Indian singing of Ustad Sultan Khan, and the fragile sitar of Anoushka Shankar. Even the tunes that aren't Eastern, like Nouvelle Vague's Euro-lounge "This Is Not a Love Song," get the full Indian treatment with droning tambouras and tabla percussion. I wonder what it says that no matter whether they're using Astrud Gilberto, Sarah McLachlan, or the Doors as source material, it all comes out sounding like Thievery Corporation. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:

With a voice like Stevie Wonder, a production sound that recalls the string-laden, slinky-bass disco of Studio 54, and a penchant for funky dance moves and outlandish hats, Jamiroquai's Jay Kay has successfully managed to straddle the underground and mainstream for the best part of 15 years. High Times brings together 19 of his band's hits to date, ranging from early 90s acid jazz classics "When You Gonna Learn," "Too Young To Die," and "Blow Your Mind," to later successes such as "Canned Heat," "Cosmic Girl," "Virtual Insanity," and on to recent songs from 2005 album Dynamite, such as "Feels Just Like It Should" and "7 Days In Sunny June." There are also two new tracks--the current single "Runaway" and the edgier "Radio," both of which continue the Jamiroquai tradition of mildly euphoric dancefloor disco-soul. Despite sticking to a formula of sorts over the years, the songs on this collection compliment each other well and form an impressive overview of one of the UK's most distinctive bands. --Danny McKennaAlbum Description

If you like the sound of a sort of combo "jazz-rock" Cd then this is the one for you. JAMIROQUAI is a great band. It`s hard to truly define their sound, but whatever it is ,... it's GREAT!
As I said before, this band is a combo jazz-rock with a bit of alternative thrown in. The lead singer is AMAZING! The other band players are absolutely amazing too.
If you get this Cd, you wont be able to stop your feet from twitching to their beat. FUN!!!!!!
PS: if you have seen NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE then you will recognize track # 11!!---LOVE IT, and so will you!

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Smooth, downtempo grace flows through the veins of St. Germain, a.k.a. noted French composer-producer Ludovic Navarre. His record is a sensual flow of jazzy textures, Latin rhythms, and bass-ridden beats, hovering on the verge of techno, jazz, or experimental headphone music without tipping its hand too far in any direction. The result is irresistible: class with an edge. --Matthew CookeAmazon.com
Techno and house music producer Ludovic Navarre is--along with Laurent Garnier, Air and DJ Cam--one of the biggest names in French electronic music of the past decade. His ability to imaginatively blend jazz elements with recent dance-music styles has been demonstrated before, but the seamless quality of this release is stunning. Compared to someone such as Amon Tobin, who obviously (although brilliantly) creates sampled collages, St Germain makes it pleasantly difficult to identify the boundary lines between "live" performance, programmed electronics, and sampled sound. Part of the credit must go to this album's musicians, including Pascal Ohsé, Eduoard Labor, Alexandre Destrez, and Idresse Diop (at least some of whom are francophone Africans making their mark in the post-colonialist European Afro-jazz scene). The CD's opening piece, "Rose Rouge," is centered on an edgy piano rhythm and a looped vocal fragment from jazz singer Marlena Shaw. The dub-inflected "Montego Bay Spleen" features Jamaican jazz guitarist Ernest Ranglin, who offers a clean, warm, neo-Wes Montgomery style filtered through his years as a session musician-architect of ska and reggae. And Edouard Labor's raspy flute tone on "So Flute," its role as much rhythmic as melodic, adds a Latin flavor to the mix. "Sure Thing," another high point of the release, is built around a vocal and guitar sample from blues guitarist John Lee Hooker, borrowed from the soundtrack to Dennis Hopper's film The Hot Spot and noteworthy on its own as probably the only time Hooker, Miles Davis, and Taj Mahal ever played together. Navarre's skill in selecting musicians, finding sample sources, and assembling cool, streamlined grooves adds up to quite an accomplishment. --Bob BannisterAlbum Description

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
Picking up where Buena Vista Social Club left off, BVSC Presents Ibrahim Ferrer soothes with the hushed romanticism of Cuba's yesteryear while boasting the talents of one of its greatest singers, Ibrahim Ferrer. Again there's an all-star lineup of musicians led by pianist Rubén González and singer Omara Portuondo creating music at the renowned Egrem studios, whose live room brings the slow lucidity and intense vigor of the Cuban classics to life. --Karen K. HuggAmazon.com
It should never cease to amaze how spry and dramatically potent a force is the Buena Vista Social Club. The group--really a gaggle of aging Cuban maestros brought together for stunning all-star performances--keeps its footing in Cuban dance music at the same time as it revels in the lax tempo of layered hand percussion and traditional rhythms. Ibrahim Ferrer stepped to the international fore as the vocalist on the eponymous BVSC CD in 1997 and here furthers his already-obvious command of everything from sultry, horn-swaying ballads to gritty son tunes like "Mamí Me Gustá." Ferrer's tattered vocal inflections shape the more rollicking tunes so their texture is palpable, especially when belted in antiphonal give-and-takes with the rest of the huge band he totes along here. A 15-member-strong string section steps forward on the bolero tracks, which send off a smoldering passion that's startling in light of the BVSC's heightened, horn-charged charts. But the rich string passages color songs in wide brush strokes, which is to say that they heighten the passion to no end. Ferrer's debut might come in his twilight years, but it's a majorly luminous event. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

I LIKE A SPICY CUBAN DISH (In A Little Black Dress).......2007-03-19
[*I first became conscious of the strange phenomenon when I was about 15 years old: I ordered something to eat in a little fast food Mexican joint on Venice Boulevard in West Los Angeles. Unbeknownst to the young Latinas working behind the counter, the very next person to place his order was my Pa, and when he joined me at a table, he related to me how one girl said to her co-worker after I walked away, "That guy was cute," and the other agreed.*]
Good Friend Melanie gave me the IBRAHIM FERRER album of Cuban Jazz as a gift the Christmas before last. (I had mentioned beforehand that I have more music than time to hear it, but she listened to me about like men listen to women. No one's to blame for the communication disconnect between the genders, really, because we have such disparate origins: A woman is from Venus and a man is from a woman's "Monologue.")
[*Including my ENTIRE life, I can count on two fingers how many White, Black, or Asian women have had me and the "Mystery Dance" occupying the same thought in their mind. But Hispanic women have always found me to be irresistible, and I don't know why. I am a very ordinary looking, but extremely analytical individual who tends to mentally dissect everything in order to comprehend why and how such and such is so. But I've yet to concoct even the most rudimentary theory to explain the Latin woman's attraction to me.*]
I almost gave up on the IBRAHIM FERRER recording because I just couldn't seem to warm up to it for the longest time. At one point, I considered posting a Two-Star review on this website which I thought to title, "I'LL HAVE THE NUMBER THREE COMBINATION PLATE AND A MARGARITA, PLEASE." The music just made me feel like I was sitting in a booth at a Mexican restaurant. "Not that there's anything wrong with that", but tunes for home listening? And since Good Friend Melanie wasn't too crazy about Bright Size Life - the Pat Metheny disc I had given to her - we even considered trading, and each of us keeping the item we had purchased.
[*The brilliant and world-renowned South American sociologist, Yoey O'Dogherty, once observed that, "Hispanic women are especially drawn to the warm magnetism of masculine intensity, just as conversely, snowmen are drawn to frigid climates." And in my youth I was sometimes known by the nickname, "Mister Intense." Perhaps this accounts for why Latinas are so susceptible to the energy of my aura?*]
I finally decided that I would play nothing but IBRAHIM FERRER whenever writing on my computer until either my ears became educated enough to enjoy it, or until I could stand it no longer and gave it away to Lupe, the waitress at Abuelo's Mexican Food Embassy who always gives me extra guacamole and a wink.
[*You know how women can give men "the once over" without tipping their hand to the guys, while men just ogle openly? Well, these spicy Hispanic gals sometimes lose their highly refined skills around me, unable to extinguish the hungry flames in their orbs. Even at my advanced age of 47, wearing spectacles, and with plenty of grey cohabitating with the brown on my scalp and in my goatee, I still sometimes catch `em eyeing me.*]
Well, to my great surprise, I not only eventually came to differentiate between all of these melodies, but came to embrace them as if they were part of my own culture. The tremendous blasts of brass; the lively, intricate percussion work; the sparse but soulful guitar touches of Ry Cooder; and the emotional and romantic Spanish vocals really move me ... and they make my writing move, too. I've found that IBRAHIM FERRER puts some added zest into my words - really gets the creative juices flowing. (Can't you tell?) Because of its dancing rhythms, it's become maybe my very favorite disc to play as background music while writing anything.
[*I once had a sweet and shy Mexican girl tell me about a week before her wedding that all along it was me she had been hoping to catch. And less than twelve months ago, this 18-year-old hot Hispanic thang let it be known that she was interested in me. (She went by Wendy, but I'm pretty sure her Mama named her Maria.) She was a real cutie and had an absolutely OUTRAGEOUS body to go with that face: all the curves in just the right places and very well pronounced like: "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain!" To borrow from The Commodores, she was truly built like a "Brick OWse!" The night I had to turn her down, pointing out that at my age I was nearly old enough to be her grandpa, I drove home gnawing on my knuckles and chanting over and over again, "There had better be a Heaven! There had better be a Heaven!"*]
As if the music alone wasn't reason enough to purchase IBRAHIM FERRER, the song MARIETA contains one of the funniest lyrical passages ever. Translated into English it says: "My wife was suffering from an illness of the heart in Havana. So the doctor came one morning to examine her. He took off her dress, her p*nties, too. And her slip. But when I saw that indecency I said: This isn't good; I really don't think my wife's heart is that far down." Imagine that, a song about a doctor "playing doctor."
[*So, you're wondering why I told you how attractive Latinas find me? Well, it just so happens that I wasn't talking to you, Dude; I was trying to send a discreet message to your hot, Hispanic girlfriend. But you know what? To heck with subtlety: Hola guapa, llamame cuando tu novio esta fuera.*]

Awesome.......2007-07-12
Huge disappointment, at least for me........2007-06-10
I found out about this release about a month before its release and counted down the days. The idea seemed so ingenious. (I absolutely love the cover, too.) I guess I got it with the wrong expectations. I was thinking it would be like the wonderful Motown Remixed album, but what I got was very different. All of the mixes sound the same to me. They are very long, drawn-out and repetitive house remixes with Simone's vocals buried or hidden somewhere in the mix after about two minutes of anti-climactic beats. It's quite sad because this seems more of a showcase of the mixers than the voice of Simone. Not right. The only song I enjoyed on here was the remix of "Ain't Got No - I Got Life."
Also, there is no booklet. All the other Legacy releases had great booklets with interviews, biographies, or memories from friends and family. I was quite disappointed that there wasn't one present here. The CD is housed in a nice digipak and great artwork, though.
So, down to the point: if you like house music, then this is probably for you. If you're thinking something different when you hear 'remix' and your main focus is on the artist, then this probably isn't. I'll stick to the good ol' originals, thank you.

Sun-kissed house grooves are once again the order of the day on Those Things, the second solo album from Bay Area DJ/producer Miguel Migs. In contrast to 2002's Colorful You, however, this go-round has Migs taking his blissed-out beats in a more organic direction by throwing a variety of live instruments into the mix. On the title track, for instance, house queen Lisa Shaw's vocals bounce atop a percolating bassline that juggles multiple synths, rhythmic funk guitar, an overdriven guitar solo, and vocal samples. Other tracks are laced with trumpet, sax, and congas. For the most part, this eclectic approach bears fruit by giving Migs a deeper bag of tricks to use in working his deep house magic: "So Far" and "Mesmerized," which both feature the superb vocals of LT (a.k.a. Aya) have more than enough of that bubbly warmth that put Naked Music on the map, while more novel tunes like "Shake It Up"--where Brand Nubian's Sadat X tells the tale of a night out with some cliché but more playfulness--are unexpectedly beguiling. Migs, widely known for his skills in the studio, has hit a new a high with Those Things, and even dance-music skeptics will find this organic flavor of house difficult to resist. --Brent KallmerAlbum Description
Those Things, the anticipated sophomore artist album by electronic music's soulful maestro Miguel Migs...The long-awaited follow up to the internationally acclaimed `Colorful You'( released in 2003 on Astralwerks/ Naked Music. Those Things finds Migs meandering into the old school funk and soul side of the dance music spectrum focusing on his trademark high caliber production and tasteful quality song writing that he is best known for. Drawing inspiration from his diverse musical taste and background, Miguel serves up a tasty blend of 13 original songs featuring an all star line up of special guest vocalists, including Reggae legend Junior Reid, Sadat X from Brand Nubian Fame, LT, Lisa Shaw, Tim Fuller, and Fred Ross from Sly and the Family Stone. The result is an album that takes you on a ride through a unique listening experience crossing the boundaries of dance music with a sound that Miguel has seamlessly blended together.Customer Reviews:
Different from the Norm Yet Catchy.......2007-06-25
"Shake It Up," and "Giving It All". You would not be disappointed with purchasing this album regardless if you are being introduced to Migs for the first time or not.

Clever & never boring.......2007-05-11
`So Far', Can't get through', `Mesmerized', `Sometime', `Get down tonight', and Side to Side' are the more listenable and memorable songs in this CD. I've listened to them for several days now and they haven't gotten boring.
I'm hoping to hear more from Miguel Mig's mixes in the near future. He's the closest this to a Paul Oakenfold without marquee vocalists.
I recommend this CD to anyone who like dance music without the harshness. This smooth blend will have your friends asking `Who's that!"
