Several Shades Of Jade / Breeze From The East ~ Cal Tjader.......2006-03-15

The idea of "combining" two of Cal Tjaders best album's was a good one, of the two, "Breeze From The East" was Tjader's classic,with the exception of tracks "Burke's Law and Star Dust," the way he played made me feel as if I was somewhere in the "South Pacific" hearing the lapping of the waves on a sun baked beach...Excellent!!

Breeze From the East is a wonderful album.......2005-04-12

Thanks to Verve Records (a division of Polygram Classics & Jazz) for remastering these. I bought this CD to replace my LP of Breeze from the East. I understand many critics, and Cal Tjader himself, prefer the "similarly-themed" album Several Shades of Jade, included on this CD. I do like several of "Jade's" nine tunes. But I was surprised to frequently hear a Big Band sound on that album - lots of brass; standard-fare and/or annoying percussion. Those same critics have pointed out faults of "Breeze." But there is a consistent, intriguing mix of instruments and rhythms here that are melded with - and not overpowering of - Cal's vibraphone riffs. A refreshing breeze all the way through.

Despite being borne out of a period of musical compromise by Tjader, 'Several Shades of Jade' is a fine record. It may not be one of his more individual statements, and in fact, it doesn't even sound like he's the band leader, but the final product - above all the subtext of credits - is smart music.

One feels the presence of Lalo Schifrin, Tjader's collaborator and arranger on the album, more so than Tjader's in the overall aesthetic of the record, and that's not all that surprising when you consider that he wrote four of the songs and employed his orchestra throughout. Having extensive experience scoring films, Schifrin does little to suppress those tendencies even within the setting of a proper jazz recording. He establishes drama and creates shades of sound with his vast arsenal of musicians and instruments that Tjader was unable to achieve with his own small combos. Some would see Schifrin's influence as a watering-down of Tjader's sound - and that may be true on a personal level - but what's wrong with a classy soundtrack album, even if there's no film? What makes it even more interesting is the whole Far East theme, which fits right into Schifrin's style of creating scores for films in exotic locales.

I think the opening track, 'The Fakir', is the most successful song on the record in terms of creating a synthesis of East and West, and it hints at what Herbie Mann would do a few years later on his 'Wailing Dervishes' album. 'Cherry Blossoms' is a really precious ballad, yet sincere. Santana more or less recorded 'Borneo' with rock instruments and called it 'Soul Sacrifice' on their debut record with no credit to Schifrin. Tjader sounds great on 'Tokyo Blues' and 'Song of the Yellow River' is reminiscent of a classic Schifrin chase scene. 'China Nights (Shina No Yoru)' and 'Almond Tree' will appeal to fans of Tjader's more traditional sound, though some horns are present.

The 'Breeze From the East' record should have been titled 'Breeze THROUGH the East' because Tjader and his new collaborator Stan Applebaum apparently didn't spend much time there, judging by the music. Where the 'Several Shades...' album made an attempt to be conscious of traditional music from the Far East and represent it in a dignified manner, 'Breeze From the East' is a cheap postcard put to music. It's the work of tourists - for tourists - and has very little soul. Because Tjader was involved in both projects and the two records were cut six months apart, the difference in quality lies in the collaborators, with Schifrin's skills embarrassing those of Applebaum. It almost sounds like someone told Tjader and Applebaum after the songs were rehearsed that this was going to be an Eastern-flavored record. Many of the songs are quite conventional but suffer from inappropriate patronizing Eastern flourishes that do nothing to enhance either the song or the image of Eastern people. Primary offenders on the 'Breeze...' album are the cringe-inducing 'Cha', 'Shoji', 'Theme From Burke's Law' (what were they thinking?) and the Japanized shlock take on 'Star Dust'. It's somewhat interesting to hear the piano riff from the latin standard 'Mazecote' on 'Poinciana' and 'Black Orchid' is a decent song, though re-recorded, but that's about all there is to recommend for 'Breeze...'

A Good Beginning for New Cal Tjader Fans.......1999-12-31

This CD is a wonderful beginning to those venturing forth into the world of acid jazz, let alone the world of Cal Tjader. My most favorite cuts are "Cherry Blossoms" and "Theme from Burke's Law." These cuts, although diametrically opposed (musically speaking), present just the duality this CD offers. First, the Asian-influenced cuts create a sultry and spicy flavor of music for you to enjoy. The second half offers a more mellow, cocktail party-like atmosphere. No doubt you WILL find favorite cuts among the choice selection "Several/Breeze" offers!

As a Dungeon Family fan, I had to check out Cool Breeze's 1999 debut "East Point's Greatest Hit." I first heard Cool Breeze on the song "Dirty South" from Goodie Mob's 1995 album "Soul Food" and was excited to see that he had finally released a solo album. Cool Breeze is very proud of his southern heritage and on most of the tracks, he speaks fondly of his home of East Point, Atlanta, Georgia, and the surrounding area. He recalls stories, people, and occurrences of his past throughout the album's seventeen tracks. Cool Breeze has a whole lot of character and is often really fun to listen to, he has a distinct flow where he emphasizes the last word of each line and has a cool voice with a southern drawl. The production, handled mostly by OutKast's legendary beat crew Organized Noize, is for the most part excellent, thick with funky, solid beats and good hooks. The few guest appearances, while there are not enough in my opinion, are solid, including good collaborations with the whole Dungeon Family, Sleepy Brown, the Calhouns, and Kurupt. I do have a few problems with this album. The first is that most of the disc is edited and poorly so, using bad scratches to censor some tracks like a radio station would. Sometimes I wish that Cool Breeze would switch up his flow a little bit, on some of the tracks his delivery sounds identical. The couple of tracks that aren't produced by ONP have some weak beats and the sound quality of the recording isn't great. I also think the skits and interludes are bad, they are not funny and don't add to the album at all, actually detracting from the final product. Despite the few shortcomings, "East Point's Greatest Hit" is a strong debut that I recommend to DF and southern rap fans.

"Ghetto Camelot" begins the album well, Cool Breeze spins tales of ghetto lifestyle over a tough, horn-laden beat with a weird female-sung chorus. "Watch for the Hook" is awesome, and an obvious highlight of the album. It is a posse cut featuring the whole Dungeon Family, and it has great upbeat production and good raps from the whole crew. I really like "Good Good," which has a great performance from Cool Breeze and a great hook, I like how he repeats the last word of every rhyme. The beat to this song is very good as well. "Cre-A-Tine" is a boastful, grittier song, and "We Get It Crunk" is a good collabo with Kurupt, their chemistry is impressive and the beat is funky with droopy synths. The poor editing really takes away from the quality of this track, but it's good anyway. "Butta" is an odd, smooth track that only a Dungeon Family member could pull off. Over a laidback beat, Cool Breeze tells a strange story, and it sounds really cool and kind of artistic. I thought "Hit Man" and "Black Gangster" were pretty good songs but not really great. Lyrically "The Field" and "Tenn Points" really stood out. He represents his character and home on the song "EPGH." My favorite song on the disc by far is "Weeastpointin,'" a gorgeous laidback funky song featuring Sleepy Brown. Sleepy makes an amazing presence on the song, singing beautifully over the soulful piano vibes and funky synths in the chorus, the lyrics are cool depictions of East Point and the song definitely stands out on the album. The funky style continues into the next track, the upbeat and experimentally electronic "Doin' It in the South," another strong highlight of the album. The tracklist closes with a bonus track where Cool Breeze shares the mic with his crew The Calhouns.

Overall, "East Point's Greatest Hit" is a flawed but entertaining album showcasing an entertaining MC and good beats. This is very good southern hip hop and I really wish that he would have recorded more music, I hope he'll put out another album in the future. I recommend "East Point's Greatest Hit" especially to fans of Goodie Mob and OutKast's later albums, and southern hip hop fans in general will probably enjoy most of this album, because it is solid musically and lyrically.

Why didnt anybody give him a chance?.......2006-08-14

Cool Breeze is the most underrated rapper in the dungeon family click! Its unfortunate that he got overshadowed by Outkast and Goodie Mob. Standout tracks: ghetto camelot, watch for the hook, creatine, good good, the field, tenn points, black gangsta, doin it in the south, E.P.G.H, etc. Filler: butta is too weird for comfort and the calhouns is kind of dull plus the skits are nothing to brag about. Songs like the field , east points greatest hits, tenn points show that Cool Breeze has more depth in his character than Outkast. I dont see how people could sleep on him when his album had everything. It was creative, it was somewhat conscious and it was lyrical. People dont know what their missing because they are too busy following the crowd.

Dis cd was straight. Some of the beats made it hard to listen to, but Breeze came hard on 93% of the tracks. He sound like DJ Quik minus the smooth beats. Dat Skinny Calhoun cd gives u more of that classic DF FOUNK.

nice debut.......2004-07-15

I just recently bought this album(6/04), and it's still tight. Beats and lyrics are not outdated especially since it's 4 yrs later.I've always loved "Watch for the Hook" but never bothered to purchase the album. I'm defintely not disappointed. In fact upset I didn't buy it sooner. Production is good and it's refreshing to hear someone drop lyrics without cursing.

Favorite tracks: Watch for the hook, the Field, Doin it in the South, Hitman.

Too bad he didn't return for a second album.

This album was a near classical collection (subliminal message).
This aggin should've got a damn spot at running for mayor. He put it down for the town. He's not Atlien'ish or Goodie Mob'ish. He's Cool Cutta! He got that butta! Black Gangsta! You know all the good stuff you never heard about. Better buy it! I wish Big Bass Brian would've mastered it. Though, Chris Bellman did a good job.

A tougher Cet Baker.......2006-10-18

This was the first studio album Chet Baker cut after a lengthy stay in Italy (5 years), made in January 1965. He returned to the States with a new style (and a new axe - flugelhorn), playing "harsher" (his words) than ever before. He was also tackling new material, very advanced and creative. This is evident throughout this CD as he works his way (effortlessly, by the way) through a couple of Hal Galper compositions that are pretty complicated and sophisticated. BABY BREEZE has a blues march feel to it, and Chet's solo is melodic and strong. THIS IS THE THING is taken up and it's HOT, especially Frank Strozier's alto solo. Another Galper tune is PAMELA'S PASSION, also taken up, which goes out of tempo on occasion and thus produces excellent tension. Richard Carpenter contributed two tunes, the best being COMIN' DOWN, which sounds very much like Coltrane's GIANT STEPS. Baker sings on a few tunes, which is okay but no great shakes; on one of them (BORN TO BE BLUE) the focus for the listener is definitely on Bobby Scott's incredibly bluesy piano accompaniment. This is a solid album for Baker, offering up an exciting change and a deeper involvement. Nice!

Poignancy and Intimacy.......2004-08-04

Of the dozen Chet Baker CDs that I own, "Baby Breeze" stands out as the most poignant, intimate and resonant--deeply romantic but never cocktail lounge saccharine. Overall, it has the depth of feeling and richness of melody lacking in some of Chet's earlier, breezier albums. It is definitely a reflection of a more mature singer, musician and human being. His renditions of "A Taste of Honey" and "The Touch of Your Lips" are particularly haunting. I could listen to these two tracks for hours--in my solitude.

Baby Breeze, one of Chet's personal favourites.......2000-12-04

In interviews as late as 1987 Chet listed this album as one of his favourites, and who would doubt his judgment? I think it's his best album from the sixties, a perfect showcase for Chet's varied talents. Whether you like the fleet player of fast bop (or post-bop, as is the case here), the lyrical trumpeter or the sensitive balladeer, it's all here. The uptempo tunes sound very "sixties" and modern and Chet's lines are firm, hard-driven and edgy, but he never loses his human touch. As a vocalist Chet has never sounded better. He sings with fire, conviction and at times almost unbearable tenderness - "You're mine, you" and "The touch of your lips" send chills up your spine - and his rendition of Mel Tormé's "Born to be blue" is impressive and, indeed, bluesy. Anyone who claims that Chet isn't a singer should listen to these cuts. This American comeback album has long unduly been overlooked, but it is a very strong statement from this poignant trumpeter and singer. If you love Chet you should buy this one; you can't go wrong with it.

Chet Baker's sweet return to the States . . ........2000-09-04

After years in Europe, Baker returned to the West Coast to record "Baby Breeze". His trumpet was stolen just before sessions began, so he played a fugelhorn, which served to make his already langorous and lush leads warmer and smoother. After a few years of drug addiction and the resulting obscurity, Baker came back strong with this collection, which encapsulates all three of his major personas: The sweetest trumpet blower around, a singer whose voice was high and lonesome and muscular all at once, and the harder bop-oriented musician that many people don't remember. A great album from a great jazzman.

This is my favorite of Chet's recordings.......1999-08-29

This album is SO perfect because it's NOT perfect. There is a little emotional weariness in Chet's voice, and there are times when you can hear a bit of a struggle with his flugelhorn (his trumpet was stolen before he recorded this album.) But that is what gives this album such a human quality, you can truly hear the sadness in Chet's voice when he sings "Born to Be Blue" - as though the song is about him. His playing is usually phenomenal, but you can hear a bit of a struggle on his usually so perfectly executed ballad solos, and there is such beauty to it. I love this album because it has such a wonderful human quality - there is so much emotion in Chet's voice and playing, that you can almost feel with him. Definitely buy this CD if you like Chet, or even if you just want a great jazz CD to add to your collection.

The last recording of a musical genius.......2007-02-15

Frank. For all of you who love Frank like I do this is a major event in recent years music history. Another exceptional recording from Frank that we haven't had the opportunity to enjoy before. Think about this. This material was refused by all the most important record companies at the time (1978) because Frank here used an electronic device called "multivider", which when he activated it gave the impression of two or three horns playing in unison. But believe me, no gimmick here, this is pure bop, pure jazz of the highest caliber. Can you imagine that? How can a record company refuse this material for the few bucks it costed I suppose ...? What they were thinking about? What kind of un-musical persons are seated in the chairs that count in the music industry? I can't believe this. Here there's a monster musician at the top of his game, perfectly in control of his art, creative and enthusiast playing some of the best music of his career and you refuse to publish an album like this? I can't believe this. Justice is not of this world for sure. Talking about this album it comprehend only three tunes but in two versions each. The versions are not different generally speaking, thay are only two different takes of the same tune. They are two standards, Errol Garner's "Misty" and Burke/Van Heusen's "I thought about you" and a wonderful original line from Frank, "Waltz for Diane" which is a minor blues in 3/4 time that he recorded before in an album he did with Sonny Stitt now under the "Collectables" label. The trio which comps under Frank is formed by pianist Larry Willis, Billy Higgins at the drums and Kevan Brandon at double bass. An excellent trio. What can I say more. Hearing Frank blowing again is such a Joy ... I can't do nothing but shut up and play again the record.

Bob works magic on the ivory. His collaborative efforts with Marion Meadows add to this masterpiece. Summer Breeze has rocked the charts on NY's CD 101.9 for a while now. I'm a drummer and can groove to these jams all day. He's blessed with the gift of creating good music that all can enjoy.

This song is a knock out! The, like, thirty guys on it all try harder than the previous to outdo each other and some rap so fast it's insaine. When I first saw the video, it was pretty lame looking (a reservior dogs spoof) but the song kept me watching. The sample used is catchy and obscure enough to sound fresh (A-A-ApuffdaddyCHOO!! excuse me.)Like the refrain says; watch for the hook, it'll grab ya.

Alto Reed's(obviously not his real name) claim to fame was playing saxophones for Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band. Alto first recorded with Seger in 1975 at Cobo Hall in Detroit for Seger's LIVE BULLET album. Back then Seger was promoting his BEAUTIFUL LOSER album. From then on,AR stuck with Seger in studios and on stages. Near the end of the LB album,Seger introduces his bandmates,including himself. He introduced AR as his real name,Thomas Kirkman. AR hails from Birmingham,MI. Seger and the other SBB members are also Michigan natives. I'm sure many songs on this album are played on jazz stations nationwide and in other countries as well.

Alto Reed creates a relaxing mood with this outstanding album. I have been a fan of his work with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band for many years and now enjoy this CD almost daily. The title track, Cool Breeze is my favorite of the songs. I strongly recommend this CD.

I have most of blue mountains work, and this cd by Cary. I can't get enough of this blend of folk/rock and blues. There are precious few artists out there that can make a varied cd like this and pull it off without sacrificing content. Listen close to this cd and it almost sounds like it was done in one take, very raw and unpolished. Because of this, many folk will not appreciate what was done here. If you attempted to remix and tweak the production, you would lose the integrity of the recording. There are many excellent tracks here, and almost no filler. Jellyroll and What the Old Man told me are killer tracks, and the softer acoustic numbers Little Darlin and Don't Hasten Away are just as good. If you like this style of music that is very difficult to find, pick this one up. You will be amazed at the quality of content.

Jonesing for More!.......2004-09-26

This is easily the most accomplished of all of Cary's work that I am aware of. There is not a bad song and he touches all the bases that we have come to know him for. Alt-country/alt rock gems, blues rockers and acoustic blues and folk and some great dog howls.
Cary has made a lot of great music in his career and this is a masterpiece. I am already jonesing for more!

Mississippi is Alive in Here.......2004-09-07

Fans of Blue Mountain won't be disappointed in this CD. Cary has stepped it up a notch, and turned up the distortion a bit, but his old time country and blues background are still here. The guy can flat out play some mean guitar, and also write a great song. If you can catch Cary live, don't miss it. He is a treasure who needs to get the recognition he deserves.

This CD is a must have for your blues collection. It has 5 covers and 9 great original tunes, which demonstrate the talent and diverse style and personality of each musician. They spice it up with some interesting guest performances as well as a surprise twist at the end. You will not get bored listening to this CD over and over. It is also a good way to impress your friends when they ask "who is this and where do I get my copy?" Also - don't ever miss a chance to see these guys live - they are soul, groove and blues rolled into one!
