5 out of 5 stars For Several Reasons-You NEED this disc.......2002-04-30

"Inner Space" is one of the great jazz compilations ever. Unfortunately, when they transferred it to CD from the vinyl, they inexplicably and unconscionably omitted two of the finest songs on that album,"Tones for Joan's Bones" and "This is New." Who among has not bought a disc for just one song?? Well, these two omissions from "Inner Space" more than justify the expense and effort of purchasing this collaborative compilation. The disc also included some nice work I had not heard before from the other three virtuosi, but it's the two "lost" songs from Chick that make this a must have for me. In regards to reviewer #1's remarks about McCoy Tyner's "Looking Out" album, I have to agree, but then, we've all bemoaned the failure of the music industry to preserve priceless treasures in the tranisition from analog sources to digital. Sic transit gloria mundi.

3 out of 5 stars good cd but mistaken.......2002-03-06

I'M A HUGE FAN OF MCCOY TYNER'S WONDERFUL COMPOSITIONS AND WHEN
I SAW THE NAMES HERBIE HANCOCK AND CHICK COREA ADDED,I WAS EXCITED.I PURCHASED THE CD,COULDN'T WAIT TO PLAY THE CD.

ALTHOUGH IT'S A GOOD RECORDING THAT ALSO FEATURES KEITH JARRETT,.IT WASN'T THE CD I THOUGHT IT WAS.I MADE THE MISTAKE THAT WE ALL HAVE MADE WHEN PURCHASING A CD.I ASSUMED THAT IT WAS ANOTHER CD,POSSIBLY REPACKAGED. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE SUPERIOR RECORDING "LOOKING OUT", ON THE COLUMBIA LABEL WHICH ALSO FEATURED HERBIE HANCOCK,STANLEY CLARK,CHICK COREA AND ON THREE SONGS,THE BEAUTIFUL PHYLLIS HYMAN.
ALTHOUGH I WAS PLEASED WITH THIS CD AND WILL CONTINUE TO PLAY THIS CD,I'M BAFFLED THAT "LOOKING OUT", IS NOT AVAILABLE IN MCCOY'S TREMENDOUS DISCOGRAPHY.

5 out of 5 stars Comments on a bad review.......2001-12-31

...The full contents of the "Tones For Joan's Bones" LP are easily available on at least three CDs. The vinyl (and now CD) album "Inner Space" was only intended as a compilation of Chick's early recordings. The CD easily contains 12 bucks' worth of quality music, and 4 of its tracks are not available anywhere else, as far as I know.

To call Michael Cuscuna an "idiot producer" is grossly unfair. ... Michael is well-known for his many years of superb reissue production, and is nothing if not very generous with bonus tracks and alternate takes. Jazz collectors owe him a HUGE debt. He has thoroughly scoured the vaults of many a record company, and issued countless treasures.

In the case of the "Inner Space" CD, the notes clearly say that Michael Cuscuna didn't even produce it. It was produced by a Bob Porter. (Michael only produced the 70s vinyl version.)

    4 out of 5 stars Eclectic.......2001-04-01

There are 2 definitive Chick Corea recordings, in my mind anyway, "The Best of Chick Corea" on Blue Note and the recording "Inner Space", on vinyl. On "Inner Space", the idiot producer, Michael Cuscuna, left off the 2 best cuts on the recording. This CD completes the session. "Tones for Jones Bones" is one of my all-time favorite piano trio recordings. I have listened to this cut for almost 30 years, since the original LP came out, and it is still just as fresh and exciting as when it was first recorded. Chick's playing is just genius and the tune itself is a very beautiful melody. "This is New" is also a great cut.
There are 2 Keith Jarrett tunes on this recording, both of them very good. 'Margot' is a simple, but beautiful piece played in the classic Jarrett style -- absolutely astonishingly brilliant moments followed by boring runs all over the keyboard. Jarrett plays most of this cut in melodic style. The other cut is "Love #1", another pretty tune.
There are 2 McCoy Tyner cuts, both of them good, but not outstanding. Definitely not the pianist's best work. The same can be said for the 2 Herbie cuts.
In short, the music from Jarrett and Corea are the highlights of this recording.

    4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Sampler.......2001-02-14

There 4 pianists fit well together on one CD sampler: their styles are all somewhat similar. You won't encounter any AABA form song structures on this CD. However the music is all diatonic, by which I mean there are discernable chord progressions taking place and the music is generally melodic. This is the kind of CD that I will probably listen to every couple of months to remind myself about these guys' piano styles while, meanwhile, I listen to lots and lots of classic jazz pianists such as Bud Powell (bebop), Barry Harris (bepop), Art Tatum (swinging standards), Bill Evans (melodic jazz with a classical influence), etc.

3 out of 5 stars Shut up, you stupid audience!!.......2004-04-27

This music should have been recorded in a quiet studio, or in front of an audience behind glass.
In the left side of my headphones (where Hancock plays) some audience members are coughing non-stop, and when I write non-stop, I mean non-stop; not just five or six times per minute. It's very distracting, as are the noises, throughout the 19+ minute "Homecoming", made by other audience members, as if they were at the circus. People laugh and clap a lot, and seem to pay very little attention to, or respect for the music.
In addition to audience-noises, the album has a technical flub (and this I've heard on several digital re-releases); the music is played ahead quietly, with an approximate "prelay" (opposite of delay) of one second throughout the album. This flub is especially obvious during pauses or when the music transfers from "piano" to "forte", and it can be rather annoying.
The performance, however, is amazing. To hear two pianos collaborate this well on a 70+ minute album gives quite a touching feeling. Corea and Hancock create an incredible mix of all kinds of different music; classical, jazz, blues, flamenco etc., and play with a big variety of sounds and effects. Corea's muting of the strings inside the grand piano at times is a surprisingly useful tool, and his solo-piece "Bouquet" is something that really lifts this album; one of the better solo performances I've heard by him. The reason I bought this disc, was that I had heard the second track, Bartok's "Ostinato" for two pianos, and that I had read only good things about the rest of the recording. The three-minute "Ostinato" is very enjoyable, but as soon as it's over, the couching starts again. It sounds almost intentional, as if somebody wanted to ruin the music, and if that was the case, they succeeded.
I'd praise this album over the skies if it was audience-free and without the technical flub.
Mr. Corea and Mr. Hancock, please either go into the studio and re-record this music together, or play in front of an audience who respects the music enough to not show up with the flu!
To sum up for "points": 5/5 stars for the musical performance, minus one star for technical flub, minus another star for annoying audience participation.

    5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2003-03-13

There really isn't a way that one could describe the energy that flows throughout these two masterful musicians. It is absolutely incredible how their talent is potrayed in this album. I haven't gotton the chance to hear the double CD of Herbie and Chick, but apparently it is better. I don't know if that is even possible, but I will leave my mind open to all possibilities when i hear it. I highly recommend the 4th track "Bouquet" by Chick. If you are a fan of Chick, or sheer genius, either or, you will enjoy this track quite a bit. My personal favorite track though, is "The Hook" with both Chick and Herbie. It is amazing how the two musicians know eachothers every move. The muted string technique provides the rhythm for the solo musician to have a melodic and rhythmatic background to support their paying. A must buy for all music fans.

5 out of 5 stars Two artists interact........2000-11-30

This CD is just fun to listen to. A little less serious than the 2 cd live set also available with the two of them on it, but still temendous. I might recomend buying that first, but if you are a Corea fan you will fall imediately in love with his solo track, Bouquet. However, track 3 is really neat. The interaction between these players, and the sound they create makes you realize their true genius and greatness. Be aware this is not extremly well recorded and I find the audience to be distracting at times. It seems to me the low end on these pianos is rather dead as well, but the music still shines through.

It's unlikely that two major musicians could have more in common than Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock. Born a year apart, they both got their starts on Blue Note sessions in the early 1960s, worked extensively with Miles Davis (albeit in very different periods), and were among the architects and biggest successes of fusion in the 1970s. Equally distinguished as pianists and composers, they share many of the same influences, both in classical music (Ravel, Debussy, Bartók) and jazz (Davis, John Coltrane, and Bill Evans), and in the late 1970s, both were dividing their time between electric and acoustic projects.

This 1978 duet concert testifies to a remarkable empathy, along with the polish that each brings to any venture. Their two grand pianos seldom collide as they dovetail and overlay runs, rhythms, and chords, clearly enjoying the challenge and creating tremendous energy in the process. "Someday" inevitably invokes Miles, while the chromatic fantasia on Gershwin's "Liza," complete with stride, suggests populist roots in Rhapsody in Blue. "Button Up," an extended improvisation, is a highlight, including rhythmic dialogue between hand-muted strings, while "February Moment" is a relatively rare Hancock foray into solo piano. The most remarkable playing, though, is saved for the end: segued performances of hits--Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" and Corea's "La Fiesta"--that run to 35 minutes of sustained keyboard invention. --Stuart Broomer

"Some day My Prince Will Come" is one of the few true innovative Steps In Jazz Piano of the last Thirty years.Whether Solo Or Duo-and whether it was influenced By Miles Version or not.It is compositional in it's structure. And those Bridge-Transition-Turnaround-Sections are so Rhythmically and harmonically brilliant, you have to think that CC & HH worked out much of it.The Whole thing is just so beautifuly wrought. The rest of the album is great, but SDMPWC is the reason to get this.Just Beautifil.Piano Sounds you have never heard or will hear any where else.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2004-12-27

Not much more to add after the other reviewers, just wanted to emphasize how great this album is. This is truly a must have for anyone who loves jazz piano. Track 3, "Button Up," on the first disc is simply amazing, with some of the most beautiful exchanges on the recording. (Anyone else notice the person in the audience yelling out "Christmas!" at 13:33 on that track? I can't figure it out...) Also, I would like to add, that anyone who is really intrigued and awed by Herbie's touch on the keys should check him out on a recording of Maurice Ravel's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in G (especially the 2nd movement). All in all, with these guys playing together, you cannot possibly go wrong!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding.......2001-05-11

I'm generally not a fan of solo piano (or even piano duets!) but this album is fantastic. The passion and creativity of the playing makes one of those rare discs that one can listen to over and over and over again without it losing any of its freshness. Particularly breathtaking is "La Fiesta" on the 2nd disc, performed by Herbie Hancock, with its allusions to the Spanish Civil War song "Venga Jaleo." The melodic themes of that song received previous prodigious treatment by John Coltrane on "Ole," another disc I recommend as a must-have.

This disc will also appeal to your friends who say they "don't like jazz" and is a good one to play when they come over.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2001-02-25

this corea/hancock work is sick, and i mean that in the best possible way. i bought this in 1990 and, more than a decade later, have to conclude that it will never cease to bring me enjoyment. it's so incredible that i can't listen to it too often--this album is like a special occasion. their interaction feels seamless, like one mind possessing four hands. like the best jazz, each piece morphs into newer and more offbeat "songs" until, by the end, you're a long way from where you began. i've used this album to introduce at least a dozen people to corea, hancock, and jazz.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow, I am speechless........2000-11-30

This is simply amazing. Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock are two of my favorite pianists. They are both technically amazing, and compose pieces that certainly will not be forgotten by future generations. To hear them play together, live, is truly a treat. If you are a music lover you will love this. You should know there is another Chick Corea/Herbie Hancock live duet available. It is only one CD and the sound quality is a little lower, but the solo track by Chick Corea is one of his best. On this CD La Fiesta is excelent and Herbie's solo track, which is uncommon for him, is a treasure. If you love modern jazz, or either of these artists it is a must have.

                Album Description

"Live@147" was recorded over an 18 month period from 1998-99 at Restaurant 147 in New York City. The trio consists of Matthew Fries (piano), Greg Ryan (bass), and Vinson Valega (drums) playing original compositions as well as jazz standards. This working trio has been making music together for over five years in and around the New York City Metropolitan area, and reflects the classic jazz influences of the Keith Jarrett, Tommy Flanagan, and Ahmad Jamal trios.
