Best Album of The Eighties?.......2007-07-16

Maybe the best rock album of the nineteen-eighties, from one of its most criminally neglected bands. People like to name check the Beatles when reviewing the Smithereens (hell, they even went for it with 2007's "Meet The Smithereens"). But I think that's misleading and limiting. Early on, it was clear that The Who were at least equally influential, and good for us that it was so. Adding equal measures of Who crunch to Beatles jangle, the Smithereens were, foremost the work of poet Pat Dinizio. For someone like me who mainly listened to the beat, the Smithereens crafted lyrics that mattered. So while up-tempo ravers like "I Don't Want To Lost You" were aimed right at me, change-ups like "Cigarette" chill me too. Trivia bonus: word is that "Behind The Wall Of Sleep" was written about Runaways & Bangles's bassist Michael Steele. "Well she held a bass guitar and she was playing in a band / And she stood just like Bill Wyman". You decide. An important album from the 1980's. Five stars.

Great Classic CD.......2007-06-04

Relive the 80s with some of the greatest power pop songs ever written. Driving beats and great melodies evoke The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, but all tunes also have that unmistakable Smithereens stamp on them.

The Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World.......2005-11-01

With their debut full-length, the Smithereens have crafted maybe the finest recording ever. The quarter from Jersey meld a myria of styles from rock to pop to even rockabilly and country to produce an album chock full of toe-tapping tunes that take forever to leave one's head upon listening. Post modern lyrics and deep introspection make Pat DiNizio the finest songwriter of our time and Especially For You is a true gem. Music listners don't know what they are missing if they haven't listened to the Smithereens.

The first and best of the Smithereens.......2005-03-31

I looooove this album. It's just pure catchy rock. Saw them on Panama City Beach in 1991 and it was a fun show.
I have to say the "Behind the Wall of Sleep" is one of my all time favorite songs. I have covered that song in five bands I have been in. I even do it with my traditional Irish folk band, complete with pennywhistle solo.
You can't go wrong with buying this album, there's not a bad song on here.

Tueday's Groovy (Wednesday's not too shabby either).......2003-12-08

If bubble gum isn't your preferred flavor of pop music, The Smithereens offer popcorn. Yeah, that's a good way of putting it; take the band's crunchy guitars, add Pat Dinizio's appropriately salty lyrics, and you're in for an album's worth of good munching. Songs like "Strangers When We Meet", "Groovy Tuesday", "Behind The Wall Of Sleep" and (need I mention?) "Blood And Roses" exemplify the classic Smithereens recipe. They even slather on the butter when the situation calls for it ("Cigarette", "In A Lonely Place" and "Alone At Midnight").

Especially For You is the perfect album for fans of the three-minute pop song. Sixties aficionados will have fun playing "spot the influence" while listening to this record (The ending of "I Don't Want To Lose You" has a guitar line almost identical to the one that closes The Byrds' "Feel A Whole Lot Better"), but it never comes across as overly derivative. It's simply a band playing music their fans of themselves.

Granted, this isn't exactly "health food", but you deserve to treat yourself, right? Especially For You stands out among the great albums of the eighties, and is definitely worth searching out. I need only mention "White Castle Blue", a live favorite that appears on the CD version (cheesy corn anyone?)

Exellent.......2004-01-04

O'Connell was one of the finest swing singers from the 1940's era, and was without a doubbt Jimmy Dorsey's best girl singer. The music here is pretty hard to dislike, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra is on every track, and you get Dorsey's hot sax solos. O'Connell often sort of used her charm and looks to communicate to audiences, but that charm comes right thru the 78's, and onto this well remstered cd!

O'Connell pretty much brought Dorsey to the publics eye, with Amapola, Green Eyes, and When The Sun Comes Out. Square jaw singer Eberly would croon the 1st part(for slow dancers), then you'd hear a brief solo from Dorsey, and then Helen would sing hot, for the jitterbugs, and lindy hoppers!

And Helen was a "Hot" singer, who puts pizazz, and swing into every songs she sings. She sounds especailly great on Six Lessons From Madame Lazonga and Arthur Murray Tought Me Dancing in A Hurry. She also was a more then able jazz singer as one can hear on All Of Me, When The Sun Comes Out, and One Sweet Letter From You(particlarly showing what an effective torch singer she was).

A perfectly done cd, that leaves off a few of her hits with Eberly & Dorsey, but no USA record label has bothered(only a mail order Good Music Co., put out a better collection, but good luck finding that!).

Buy it, you'll love it!

Disappointing.......2003-12-18

I have to disagree with the previous reviewers. Although I'm a fan of 30s-40s swing, and particularly of female vocalists of the period, I found O'Connell mediocre compared to her contemporaries. Part of it is her style, which is pedestrian at best; and when she tries to imitate Billie Holiday I can only groan. There is no comparison. Worse, a good portion of this disc contains those awful, insipid novelty songs that became so popular in the 40s - "Boog it," "I Bought a Wooden Whistle," "Six Lessons from Madame la Zonga," "Little Curly Hair in a High Chair," "Bad Humor Man," "Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing in a Hurry," etc. Yuck! CD quality is overall good, but that's about all I can say.

Helen Was Great!.......2003-08-28

The above reviewer (From the UK) pretty much says it all, but I would like to add a few more comments. This 24 song compilation is roughly half of Helen's recorded output with the great Jimmy Dorsey band. So hopefully there will be a "Volume Two"! Bob Eberly handled the ballads effectively, but Helen specialized in the 'Rhythm' numbers. On her earlier recordings, beginning in February, 1939, she tries to emulate Billie Holiday. Because she had trouble hitting the high notes she came up with the "cool and limpid" style of singing which was all her own!

Helen could swing, but she could do the romantic songs too.......2002-08-17

Helen's most successful years were in the big band era, as female singer with Jimmy Dorsey's band. Bob Eberly was the male singer, but only three of the songs they did together are featured here (including the most successful of them all, Tangerine).

Jimmy's band certainly makes it's presence felt here, with plenty of instrumental breaks and brilliant backing for Helen, though Helen is always the star on these songs.

There is plenty of variety here, including uptemp swinging songs, romantic love songs and some amusing songs, all performed brilliantly by Helen.

This compilation was released to showcase Helen's lovely voice, so it's not by any means a greatest hits. Helen sang with Bob on many of the band's greatest hits. Great though some of them were, they didn't always show just what Helen was really capable of, which is why they were excluded from this collection. For more of the band, there are other Jimmy Dorsey compilations.

This is a real treasure, not to be missed if you like the music of the thirties, particularly if you (like me) have a soft spot for the ladies.

There are three songs I don't remeber hearing before. I thoroughly enjoy this album. I especially enjoy the way Daniel sings LOVE ME TENDER, SMOOTH SAILIN', and HELLO DARLIN'.

Great Collection.......2003-06-18

Another great Classic Doubles collection of Daniel's beautiful easy-listening music I would not wish to be without. His music whether older recordings or his latest, never fail to give me enjoyment.

ESPECIALLY FOR YOU, released originally in 1994, has such a variety from old favorites like SILVER THREADS AMONG THE GOLD, SOMEDAY YOU'LL WANT ME TO WANT YOU, and SINGING THE BLUES to tunes I had never heard before. I really love all of the songs, but especially SHE GOES WALKING THROUGH MY MIND, BROKEN HEARTS ALWAY MEND, and NEVER BE ANYONE ELSE BUT YOU were meaningful. It is seldom that you find a collection that each and every track is loved, but this album would contend for the top of my list. I hate not to mention every song, and it is as if Daniel recorded it "especially for me". Many others probably feel the same way.

LOVE SONGS was released in 1998 and of course has some especially beautiful love songs like LOVE ME TENDER. Who can ever hear this too often, and though Daniel does it ever-so beautifully, he would probably be the first to say it will forever belong to Elvis. Daniel has a perfect voice for singing love songs, and FOR THE GOOD TIMES, THE WAY DREAMS ARE, SOMEWHERE, and LAY DOWN BESIDE ME are done with great tenderness and deep feeling. SPANISH EYES and SMOOTH SAILIN' are really special, too.

You cannot go wrong if you purchase this set, so please add it to your collection as soon as possible. You won't be sorry.

Full of Variety.......2003-06-08

I just recently bought this CD and I love it! This set is great for sitting and just reading a book while you listen or for dancing to with your partner. Love Songs has a great mixture of easy going love songs as well as upbeat songs that make you want to get up and move. Especially For You has a great number of songs that just make you feel good as you listen. I would highly advise anyone who has never heard of Daniel O'Donnell before or who has been a fan for years to pick this one up now.

Another excellent cd set........2003-04-13

My wife and I have not found a bad cd by this artist, yet. He is such a pleasure to listen to. The only thing better is his DVDs. Hopefully he will be making more.

I have listened to this almost every day since receiving it. I am totally in love with this man's voice. I would surely recommend this to anyone who loves to just drift off and listen....wonderful.

One of the Best Cathedrals Album!!.......2000-08-31

Man, I first heard the tape a couple of years ago, and it just stuck with me. So now I went out and bought the CD. It was and still is one of the very best Cathedral Quartet Album out in the market! George Younce just stands out in "Who Can Do Anything". Hearing Glen Payne singing "If I could Just Hold Out" and "What A Meeting" was so . . . inspirational. And I just absolutely adore "Statue of Liberty". Wow! That is all that needs to be said! "He's My Light House" has a nice catchy tune to it, and "Because He Lives" is just one of those songs that makes you think. "Shout Over Heaven" made me wanna shout! Although "He Didn't Come Down" brought back memories, I think it was one of the weaker songs on the album, as was "His tomb Is Empty Now". But, overall, a VERY VERY VERY excellent buy. Get it!!
