Amazon.com essential recording

It Takes a Nation of Millions was the sign that hip-hop had exploded like a grenade. A rap record as abrasive, hardcore, and eloquent as a JFK speech, the 1988 disc is one classic track after another: tense, multilayered, harmonically wild music. Chuck D. declaims like a master preacher with foil Flavor Flav's voice darting around his. They've got the desperate energy of people fighting for their lives, and everything from their pumped-up rhetoric ("Prophets of Rage") to the group's quasi-paramilitary organization to the sirens and sax squeals in nearly every track declares how urgent their mission is. It's a hugely influential album, and it still sounds fresh and frightening after all these years. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Who are the idiots??.......2007-04-14

I'm compelled to provide a review. For one reason. Why the f isn't this a five star album? Some reviewers out their need their keyboards revoked. I've been listening to this record on and off for almost 20 years. Each time I get the same old buzz. My old (much loved) Pixies albums don't come close in terms of providing everlasting pleasure.

For those that don't own this, just "do yourself a favour."

BTW - DJ Spooky Trojan Records excursion is a blast....(on the platter as I write)

5 out of 5 stars As eerie as a siren........2007-02-18

You know, I once saw someone say that this shouldn't be considered music, and in one way, that person is right: it's an aural explosion on record, in a way not even an industrial band could execute it. This record came out at a time I was still coloring walls, but even I could connect well with it, it is that good. The record hasn't aged a bit. The first I heard from P.E. was "Fear of a Black Planet" a few years back, and I really enjoyed that one. I got to this and was shocked at how it was EVEN better.

Chuck D. and Flavor Flav have a delivery that can't be missed, and the Bomb Squad use some awesome loops and samples. The 3 or 4 interludes on here are great too, and not even those come off as filler. The lyrics are intellectual social/political message. There's not much quite like this today, in fact that might even be an understatement. Some tracks come off like siren tracks, like listening to songs like "Night of the Living Baseheads" and such. The live samples add to the energy of this record. It is a hip-hop record, but you don't have to be a fan of the genre to enjoy this. The energy could be appreciated by a rock fan, and the instrumental of a track like "Black Steel..." could be appreciated by a jazz fan maybe. It doesn't need to be limited to genres. It's a great record, period. The influence is something that's even been going on through the times, and that doesn't need to be explained or even justified.

It's cheaply priced and an amazing album, even sounding fresh nearly 20 years. It doesn't even need remastering any time soon! That's all the more impressive. There is so little not to like about this record, it is recommended to everyone from me.

5 out of 5 stars Wall of Sound.......2006-11-10

Possibly the greatest rap album of all time. The hard rhymer Chuck D. paired with the multi-layered production of Hank Shocklee(Bomb Squad) still packs as potent a punch as when it first dropped. Not to sleep on Flava, the greatest hype man in the business is essential to the final product; I can't imagine this album being as perfect as it is without him.

5 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing from beginning to end...................2006-09-22

Chuck, Flav, Griff, Terminator X, The Bomb Squad and the S1W's was and still is one of the most powerful hip hop groups ever put together. Chuck's voice alone should be added as seperate member. Check the power of "Here it is BAM!" Absolute classic joints are Don't beleive the Hype, Black Steel, Night of the Living Baseheads, Terminator -Rock-n-Roll, She watch Channel Zero and rest of the album.

5 out of 5 stars wow, tough crowd.......2007-04-02

boy, i don't get some of these reviews at all. this cd is amazing! every track is a mini-masterpiece, and n'dea has never sounded better. i am particularly enamored with the track, "I've Been Touched," which starts out sweetly low-key but steadily builds into a good old jam. if you've ever been a fan of The Brand New Heavies, you can't go wrong with this disc.

4 out of 5 stars A Blast From The Past.......2007-03-29

Like one of the previous reviewers added: this is a real group playing real instruments. This CD is a wholesome change from whats out there now musically. They bring back that natural funk flavor. Out of the 12 songs 9 are really solid (1,2,3,6,7,8,9,11,12). My favorites were "Get used to it" no.3 & "We won't stop" no.6. The 8th joint takes a thinly veiled shot at the techno enhanced music of the day. On the 7th cut they actually mention how they were attempting to bring funk back into music. N'dea returned with superb vocals after a long hiatus. She put icing on the cake, and she's still as seductive as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Don't understand some of the reviews on here!.......2007-02-18

This is a true band that actually plays real instruments, no samples, real horns, true acid jazz and R&B with a lead singer that will knock you down with her voice, and people have the nerve to say it's "underwhelming" and "boring". Welcome to how it used to be and should be again, folks! I saw TBNH at the Apollo last October and they the word "amazing" isn't good enough! It's been a long time since I've been to a concert where the entire crowd was on it's feet dancing from the first song to the last! N'Dea is back home where she belongs, and this CD proves it! The rest of you can go back to buying sampled artists who use all electronic junk, I'll stick with the "real deal", thank you!

Album Description

K'naan, former refugee, now based in Toronto makes music that is a mixture of hip hop, African beats and world music intertwined - combining African drums, chants, handclaps, guitars and organic instrumentation sets this album outside the hip hop herd. K'naan creates music with a message. Leaving Somalia at the age of thirteen on what turned out to be the last commercial flight ever to do so, amidst a crumbling society and the end to this day of any form of central government K'naan carried with him a very strong sense of purpose as well as his amazing lyrical gift, which has made him a beacon for other artists a well as those dedicated to global change. Canada only release! With his unique voice and truly authentic style, K'naan brings an enormous dose of realness and urgency to the hip-hop world in a time when people are desperate for it. From a personal and cultural history rooted in poetry (being the grandson of one of Somalia's most famous poets), K'naan widens the traditional hip-hop perspective. Discovered and produced by Track & Field, same producers that discovered and produced Nelly Furtado, Dusty Foot Philosopher is comprised of 18 total tracks including 'Smile', 'My Old Home', 'In The Beginning', 'Voices In My Head', 'Wash It Down', 'Hoobaale', 'Rap Gets Jealous' and more. BMG. 2005.

Album Details

Negotiating his Way Forcefully Through a Gritty Sandstorm of Spoken-word and African Instrumental Interludes, K'naan Brings Us a Collection of Funky, Original Backgrounds Nearly as Weighty as the Cautionary Words that Float above Them. In his Liner Notes, K'naan Recounts a Nearly Fatal Incident Involving a Live Grenade which He and a Couple of his School Friends Discovered in their Classroom in Mogadishu, Somalia. While Playing with the Mysterious Object, which Initially Looked Like a Potato, the Grenade's Pin Slipped. Throwing it as Fast and as Far as He Could, the Destructive Object Lay to Ruin Much of the Empty Building. Thankfully, No One was Hurt. Then Only Ten Years Old, K'naan (Whose Name Means "The Traveller" in Somalian) Credits that Event as the Watershed Moment which Led Him to Become a Writer.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive and thought-provoking.......2007-07-07

Everyone will have their own opinion, but in my opinion (which is the best! : * ) this is the best CD I've purchased in a long time. If you like Arrested Development, Donnie, Stevie Wonder, India Arie or anybody who's not just singing or rapping for the sake of filling airtime, you'll love it. In The Beginning makes me dance, Hoobaale makes my think and sing at the same time, and What's Hardcore makes me laugh at the stupidity of mainstream hip-hop "gangstas". I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Phenominal.......2006-12-16

I generally listen to reggae and have recently gotten into more Hip-hop and Rap. So, while I may not have the best perspective on this type of music, I will put it simply: this album blew me away. I really can't put my finger on it, but K'naan is fantastic. He is clever, angry, poetic, lyrical, and contemplative all at the same time. Besides the rythims, beats, etc., which are great, K'naan is able to give the listener a picture of whatever he's rhyming about, literally a picture in your mind. And, this is fundementally positive rap, hard to find no doubt, and it also makes you want to stand up a move around. I recommend this album to any fan of music, and I anxiously await K'naan's sophmore attempt.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing, innovative, dynamic.......2006-11-27

I normally don't go for hip hop and I hardly ever give 5 stars, but quality trumps genre any day, and this is some great stuff. Musically influenced by hip hop beats and his native Somalia, he manages to keep them successfully distinct. When he does merge them, it is with skill and style and wit. Too often merged styles end up sounding muddy, but not here.

The lyrics are poetic. He deals with some very serious subjects, but manages to inject humour and pragmatism without cheapening the message.

Finally, the album works well as a whole, not just a collection of songs, though you'll probably want to add some singles to your playlists.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Masterfull.......2006-10-19

I had a chance to see K'naan at the Breedlove Tour with Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Pharaoh Monche and Jean Grey and let me tell you he rocked the show. I had the chance to meet him after the show as he was selling his beautiful album at the back of the Fillmore in Denver and what a guy. Humble, kind, very down to earth. His music expresses the hardships of leaving his homeland and the unimaginable pain of living in modern day Somalia. His music expresses the frustration and anger about his homeland but also brings hope about the future, as well as awareness as most people especially in the U.S. have no idea what is going on over there because CNN and other corporate media just cover it as a rogue state. K'naan puts the human element in his music and expresses it beautifully. Great all around CD, original beats, lyrics, and well put together. Keep on fighting K'naan wherever you are.

5 out of 5 stars Overwhelmingly Beautiful and Poetic!.......2006-10-04

I'm an East African who grew up right over the border from Somalia and even then, I've never heard anyone say anything about Somalia other than rehashing CNN's point of view. It was always just a "messed up" place and nothing else. Finally this young brother speaks with such passion about the life and people that LIVE there...despite the turmoil and everything else there is LIFE and LOVE and K'Naan does such a phenomenal job getting that across. Listening to his tracks you can feel the pain, the frusteration, the hope...everything. He also acknowledges that just because he's no longer in a war-torn country doesn't automatically mean that life is great, a thought rarely discussed when it comes to refugees. It's often assumed and believed that we've done them all a great huge favor by removing them from their country...and while it's obviously better not to live under the fear of death, there's also the fact that generally people prefer to live in their home surroundings with the people they love and are familiar with. Migration, even to the lands of milk and honey in the west, is a HUGE sacrifice. Bravo K'Naan! This CD is a major contribution to Africa's history and to the masses whose thoughts and feelings are rarely acknowledged in an affirming an unbiased manner. An ESSENTIAL piece to anyone's library!

Producer Calls on the Power of Music to Increase Math Scores

In just four years, producer David Printis has taught math, science and geography to over 35,000 children by invoking the power of music. Now, his company continues to educate with new CD's.

Fort Washington, MD - As our country rallies for higher math achievement scores by increasing teachers' pay and rewarding states for encouraging learning, one music producer has risen to the call to action by producing educational music CD's that kids, parents, and even teachers are raving about.Launched in October 2001, the series' first CD, "Multiplication Hip Hop," became an instant hit, and has since become one of the hottest selling independent music CD's on the East coast. Later titles in the series, "It's Elementary," "Science and Geography," and the newest one, "Addition and Subtraction" have met with equal success.

"Kids like the CD's," Printis remarks. "They don't even realize they're learning. They just think they're having fun listening to hip hop."

Not only has Printis won the praise of parents, teachers, and school principals, his company has received the interest of university faculties and national media such as The Washington Post and National Public Radio's "Morning Edition."

"Kids learn the alphabet by learning a song, they learn to count by putting it in a song. This is just another way of bringing it to life for kids," says Martin L. Johnson, professor of mathematics education at the University of Maryland at College Park.

Karen Kunkel, principal at Green Valley Elementary School in a suburb of Washington, D.C., uses "Multiplication Hip Hop" to teach her second graders. She has attributed the CD's with her school's significant improvement on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills, a standardized test given to students in Maryland.

"The CD's are a good influence," Printis concludes. "The rhythm keeps the kids interested…and learning."

    Amazon.com

For his third collaboration with director Sam Mendes (after American Beauty and The Shawshank Redemption), composer Thomas Newman has come up with one of his finest scores. The music mixes modern atmospheric quasi-rock touches with Middle Eastern influences (with particularly great success on the tracks "Welcome to the Suck" and "Zoomies."). The latter manifest themselves in both the beats and the instrumentation--the credits include soloists on exotic instruments such as the bowed cumbus (a type of banjo-like lute) and the processed xaphoons (a sax made of bamboo). All the more jarring, then, when the CD's handful of songs pop up. (It's quite a jolt to hear Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" after four eerie instrumental tracks.) The other song picks are obvious but well chosen: T-Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Tom Waits's "Soldier's Things." Still, it's Newman's work that propels this CD, not the pick-up songs. Surprisingly, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," which figures in one of the movie's most memorable scenes (when soldiers watch Apocalypse Now), isn't included here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars You fools!.......2006-10-27

I am reading all the negative reviews of this soundtrack, and most of them mention the absence of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks." One reviewer gives the album one star because he was "misled" into buying the album.

Um, hello? This is an instrumental score for the film! NOT a Various Artists soundtrack! This is, you may have noticed, an album that falls under the name of Thomas Newman! If anyone bought this expecting other music, then it's entirely their own fault. It even says on the front: "MUSIC BY THOMAS NEWMAN."

That said, I'd also like to correct Amazon on something - they said this is Newman's third outing with Mendes, the other two being "Shawshank Redemption" and "American Beauty."

Shawshank was directed by Frank Darabont, NOT Sam Mendes.

Mendes' other pairing with Newman was actually on 2002's "Road to Perdition," which is another great soundtrack I'd heartily recommend purchasing.

3 out of 5 stars Missing Theme Song - but otherwise not bad.......2006-03-01

If you've watched the previews for this film, you're likely expecting a song called Jesus Walks by Kanye West to be on the soundtrack but it's not there - very annoying. But otherwise it's a pretty good CD of music to listen to while you work out or drive fast.

3 out of 5 stars Fine score, but a consumer warning for the CD.......2006-01-20

Thomas Newman's original music for JARHEAD is not only typically daring with many unconventional sounds (utilizing samples, electronic treatments and exotic percussion), but one of his most stirring, rock-influenced efforts as well (as with the opening track, "Welcome to the Suck"). At first I thought there were no melodies as memorable as "Dead Already" from AMERICAN BEAUTY or "Road to Chicago" from ROAD TO PERDITION, but the 3/4-time march used in both "Raining Oil" and "Desert Storm" has grown on me. Of course the CD is recommendable for Newman's score alone. But...

...while one doesn't buy a CD of this nature primarily for the extra songs, one does expect the extras to be competently presented when they appear. So I was taken aback to hear Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" at a faster tempo and higher pitch than usual, as though mastered from a sped-up tape. I can't think of any intentional reason for this, so I'm assuming it was a mistake, but either way I found it not only annoying in itself but because of "Fight the Power"'s thematic significance, with its reference to the Bobby McFerrin tune heard earlier in the movie. ("'Don't Worry Be Happy' was a number one jam/Damn if I say it you can slap me right here".)

So then, while I like the Thomas Newman score a lot, I'm docking the CD a star for the sped-up "Fight the Power". Caveat emptor.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Newman is a Genius!.......2006-01-07

Thomas Newman is brilliant as always and delivers beautifully. Having read the book prior to the motion picture, Thomas Newman truly brings Swofford's tale to life. If you enjoyed The Horse Whisperer or the Shawshank Redemption score, then you'll thoroughly enjoy Jarhead.

3 out of 5 stars Almost perfect for the film, loses points as a cd.......2005-12-23

Make no mistake - Jarhead proves Thomas Newman's abillity to write music for film. He is not making the music in order to show off his amazing talents, he is making the music so it is perfect for the film. Whereas some composers might score depressing scenes with grand sweeping movements trying to make themselves look like complex composers, Newman knows what will enhance the scene and what won't, and what can convey the message required.

Ultimately, this describes Jarhead perfectly. I have seen the movie and music is seamless and perfect for it. For the most part, there is a sonic texture created, with guitars and drums to represent the bravado of the characters. If you are a fan of Newman's stirring orchestral works this is definitely not something you would like. Newer fans of "American Beauty" and the like will find things to enjoy here, but not in as vibrant or pleasing a way as in that album. The score on it's own is just not as exciting or involving as it could be. It is interesting in it's own right, but not very pleasing to hear. However, there are many good tracks interspersed throughout the score to take you to the good spot.

Overall, Jarhead warrants a 4.5/5 for the film, but on a cd, it's score drops to 3/5. It is pleasant at times, and mostly an interesting CD, but there are too many Newman masterpieces to consider this one high on your buying list. Then agan, if you are a Newman fan, this CD should satisfy you're urge to see what the guy is up to. Final score? Three out of five.

4 out of 5 stars I thought this cd was new........2006-06-20

I got this a week ago. When I first saw it I thought it was a new release. But apparently it is a couple of years old. I thought I new of every hipnotized mind and prophet posse release I never heard of this. On to the cd it is a solid release. It is not as good as there older material, but still it is aggresive this is right before they sold out and became pop. This maybe there last hard hard core release. The problem with there newer release is they have lost that addictive edge that they once had. The beats are good but are not special or hipnotic, or mystical. You have to be a fan for a long time or a person that is aware of there older material. The question I have is how did they hook up with fiend. Contrary to what people say he does sound good raping to these beats. I can only recomend this to triple six fans it is not bad and if you are curious get it but three six fans will like it more. If you like fiend get his no limit release there is one in every family that thing cranks one of the rare good NL cd's. Peace

        4 out of 5 stars Solid Release.......2006-06-01

This is a pretty good album. All the beats are really good. This is more like a 3 6 mafia featuring Fiend. What I mean is Fiend doesnt really show as much of himself in this album as he does in his other releases. 3 six mafia on this record are like how they normally are so if you like them then cop this album. Fiend comes correct on this album but hes doesnt get too personal which i think is a strong point for him usually. But he rips all his verses and his flow is really good. While Fiend sounds good on this album, he sounds a little out of place on sometimes on the Memphis beats. But its a great cd, it definately bumps and thats all that should be expected from this cd.

5 out of 5 stars THEY DID IT AGAIN - WHAT A SUPERGROUP.......2003-05-17

awesome album, best cuts have to be "U See We Poe", "Get Da F... Out My Face" and "It's Gon Be Sum Sh..". a MUST-BUY for any rap music fan

4 out of 5 stars triple six mafia presents....stregth.......2003-05-10

from the start of this cd till the end there is one thing that remains a constant... this album is great. i would of gave it 5 starts but there seems to be something ou of place with it...oh yeah FIEND... no disrespect to fiend who is a talented artist just his flow doesnt mesh well with the super producers. dj paul drops in your face verses, strong as they are hardcore, and juicy j follows with a pretty good verbal slaughter on the mic, fiend though talented falls short, however not enough to ruin the album. this is a cd that should be put on your list, and if you like the post world domination style of three-6 youll love this album

4 out of 5 stars The mystery group.......2007-04-13

I remember finding this disc as a cut-out in a bin at some random record store, and getting the store owner to loan it to me for a day or two. Next thing I knew, I had bought it and was blasting it ALL THE TIME. But I can count the number of people who remember them on one hand. I put this group in that special category of acts that really ought to have gotten to the next level of fame and recognition, but for whatever reason, the timing or buzz just wasn't right. Worth buying if you want to time-warp to 1990 and jam to some fun pop R&B. Also, DEFINITELY look at S.G.'s Butterflies album.

3 out of 5 stars Nice and mellow, but a couple of hits shy .......2007-03-02

The former back-up singers for MC Hammer went on their own and released this album in the early '90's. While they're no different than many of the teen-influenced R&B singers of the early '90's (Hi-Five, New Edition, etc.), they have a couple of distinctive slow jam hits. "Love Me Just For Me" is a memorable track for those that enjoyed smooth R&B love jams back in those days, and "In Another Place" is a mellow jam with a possibility of putting you into a quiet trance. Their up-tempo songs are nothing out of the ordinary, similar to many of the other R&B groups' dance beats. Their remake of The Stylistics' hit, "You Are Everything" is actually done quite nicely, with a more hip twist, but after a few plays, you'll long for the original track. All in all, this isn't a top-notch release, but might be worth a few bucks to add to your collection of slow jams from the '90's.

4 out of 5 stars Yes...I still listen to the tape!.......2007-01-13

This was one of M.C. Hammer's many groups that he signed to his Bust It label. "Spark of Love" was the lead single. Great album! Where are these guys now? Very talented.
