Another Crash After Titanic.......2007-02-21

I have to admit that after the popularity of "Titanic", James Horner reached a high peak in his career. Now almost all directors want to work with him, and truly enough, he has become the kind of musician that knows how to reach people, to manipulate the listener's emotions. He's been very successful at that, creating such guilty pleasures such as "Bicentennial Man" and "Deep Impact".
And since I'm supposed to talk about his music for "Deep Impact", let's move on to that. It has beautiful themes as heard for the first time in 'Crucial Rendezvous' (for the astronauts) and 'The Wedding' (for the Elijah Wood character). There is suspense music in 'Our Best Hope' and 'A National Lottery'. However, there is little action music, as heard in 'A Distant Discovery' and in the middle of 'Drawing Straws'. You can tell that Horner is focusing his music over the drama and the characters. I have no problem with that. But the movie is about the impending disaster that a comet will provoke, and, gosh, how much I wanted to hear some more of Horner's action music, with propulsive percussion and all.
In the end, I can't help to be touched by Horner's musical artistry and emotional drive, because I hum those themes for "Deep Impact", but this CD is an indication that the old James Horner is maturing, and you'll start getting used to his new manipulative voice. So let's get our handkerchiefs, and start weeping.

A Score With DEEP IMPACT.......2007-01-01

Though it received mixed critical and audience reaction when it was released during the summer of 1998, the science fiction/disaster movie DEEP IMPACT, about a large comet on a collision course with Earth, was a fairly sizeable box office smash. The special effects were extremely well done. But something else certainly contributed to the success of that film, and that something was James Horner's music score.

Up until, say, 1995's BRAVEHEART or the 1997 mega-blockbuster TITANIC, Horner was not as well-known an entity to filmgoers as other film scoring legends like John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith. But the score he composed for DEEP IMPACT, beginning with the piano-based opening track "A Distant Discovery", which serves as the underlying melody for most of the film, is as poignant and touching as Williams and Goldsmith; and he doesn't lack the ability to create drama as well. This, after all, is the same composer whose score for Ron Howard's 1995 masterpiece APOLLO 13 has a lot of similarities to this one. The feel of the vastness of space and the impending sense of tragedy, as the giant comet Wolf-Biederman bears down on Earth, is very palpable in Horner's music, which includes some very haunting choral passages as well. And none of it is ever boring, even though, out of the twelve tracks, three ("Our Best Hope"; "Drawing Straws"; "Goodbye And Godspeed") are between ten and a half and thirteen and a half minutes in length each.

DEEP IMPACT was a far better film than a lot of people gave it credit for, and the score has a lot to do with that. Highly recommended for film-score fans.

Excellent film.......2006-03-16

One of the best films I have seen lately. The universal themes like love, friendship, sacrifice and more are presented very beautifully and smartly. Outstanding acting, the action keeps you hooked up, some scenes make you cry... It is a bit sad, you are getting into some complicated relashionships. But it is also very true, and romantic too. You will see that real love can do miracles, and that it conquers everything at the end.

Not quite the impact that I expected.......2003-01-09

This is one of those James Horner scores that does not quite measure up like the others. Some of the music is good here, but nothing really stands out for me. The recording is not too good here, as most of the music is really, really quiet and you have to crank up the volume high just to barely hear anything. The soundtrack is very long at about 77 minutes, which bores you to death after a while. The usual Horner trademark sounds are present in this score, such as the horn blasts and snare drum licks. Most of the tracks contain quiet pianos and really soft strings and barely audible brasses. "Crucial Rendezvous" contains the patriotic main theme which although decent, does not really stand out. "The Comet's Sunrise" has some good action music that fans of Horner will instantly recognize and "The Wedding" is one of the best tracks with gentle and romantic string passages. "The President's Speech" is a good track with a patriotic feel and "Drawing Straws" has some rhythmic string passages that are good. "Goodbye and Godspeed" is the best track with a choir along with the full orchestra. Although some great music can be found on this soundtrack, the music really doesn't quite take off the way I wanted it to and the end result is a fair listenings worth.

Wonderful.......2001-10-18

While many may say Horner's the greatest copycat of all time, he's undeniably brilliant. True, Horner constantly echoes his past works, but instead of unoriginality, I prefer to think of it as Horner's calling card. Personally, there's no greater feeling than sitting in a movie theater and hearing a familiar motif in the score and turning to my movie buddy and saying "That's James Horner." The awed look on their face when the credits come up makes it all worthwhile. Also, it's not so much the melodies or motifs he uses, but how he weaves them together into his tapestry of emotion. Not only is Horner quite possibly the most adept composer when it comes to turning a mood completely on its head, he does it with style.

As for DEEP IMPACT, Horner demonstrates his mastery of music once again. When one closes their eyes during "A Distant Discovery" (trk 1), his haunting stellar theme emerges from the blackness of the imagination. Never has Horner been so reserved with his sound. Like a clay sculptor, he meticulously crafts a vast emotional landscape one note at a time. "Comet's Sunrise" (trk 4) explodes into existence with a rampage of clashing strings and trumpets, eerily unnerving yet forceful in its drive. Then, without even batting an eye, Horner lulls us into one of the most poingnant sequences he's ever composed. Finally, "Drawing Straws" (trk 11) culminates nearly an hour's worth of Horner restraint, walking the tightrope between unremitting sorrow and joyous hope, building heartfelt momentum upon momentum. Horner teases us with gratifying moments of fullfillment and satiating relief, but never quite relaxes us completely, carrying us through all ten minutes and forty seconds of track with calculated abandon, finally leaving us breathless and drained on the steps of the final masterpiece, "Goodbye and Godspeed" (trk 12).

Ironically, in this humble reviewer's opinion, DEEP IMPACT transcends its Oscer-winning predecessor, coaelescing into a collection of ethereal echoes and lasting impressions. For those of you with a big heart, prepare to have every string within battered and worn by the end of this tour de emotion.

better than expected, but if you've never heard it....it may not be what you expect.......2007-06-01

i discovered this band on victory records' site and listened to them and liked them. i'm glad that i can finally listen to them wherever i go instead of just online. the album is great from start to finish, although 2 of the 13 tracks are little instrumental pieces done on keyboard and samplers. a few of the songs are older songs that they redid for the album (the artist, life like movies, cowboys and indians, and i think 1 or 2 others.) the new tracks like "we are your own" and "your time to shine" are amazing. the whole cd is amazing. the only thing that i wasn't too into was that it sounds like they made the version of "walk the plank" for this album a little softer, but it still sounds amazing.
for those of you that have ever seen an add for the cd in a magazine, or the sticker on the cover....disregard what it says. it says that this cd is perfect for fans of the killers, panic at the disco, and thursday. the only relation to the killers or panic at the disco, is the sometimes dancey keyboards. i think the only relation to thursday is the "emo" sound. plus it was produced by sal villanueva who also produced thursday's full collapse. if anything, they remind me a little of chiodos (with alot less screaming), a little of saosin, a little of scary kids scaring kids, and a little of sparta.
basically....if you're curious, go to their myspace or purevolume and listen to them. they're great in my opinion. it's definitely one of my favorite releases from victory records and one of my favorite releases of the year

The selections on Impact don't sound at all dated and are definitely worth adding to your collection. Disc 2 has two additional features: a comic book that summarizes the documentary's narrative and a PC video game called Hittin' Switchez. Impact of a legend, Great 8 track EP with the Bonus DVD with all the Clips,
its worth every cent you pay for it, you get a Poster, Comic book CD, DVD
and 2 games. Every track is rated 5/5 according to me, If you have most
of Eazy's albums get this. If you are a fan of Rap & Hip Hop, get this. If you
Like West Coast rap, Get this. The DVD shows a whole lot of music videos and
clips from Arsenio Halls tv show and also footage of Bone Thugs.

He is my favourite artist of all time with Notorious BIG, and you must remember
if it wasnt for him, finding NWA and starting up GANGSTA Rap, there would never
have been no 2Pac, Biggie, Cube, etc.

Also another great feature is the fact that it has a video Megamix totally awesome
you get to see Steffon, ATL, Eazy E, Dresta, BG KO, NWA, Michele, Blood of abraham
etc. Total classic, i actually listened to it then put it in a snap lock bag
and stored it away with my classic collectables., dont want it to get ruined.

Awesome work i hope they release another one of these with more unreleased material.

Born Eric Wright in Compton, CA in 1963, Eric Wright at the age of 16 dropped out of El Dominguez High School, in Compton, CA. Eric Wright became a drug-peddler and in Compton, his own city easly gained his street name "Eazy-E', namely Eazy Eric. Eazy-E became soonly became a legendary drug dealer in Los Angeles, which Eazy-E rolled with the Kelly Park Crips, yet deceded from the Crip gangs, then took $25,000 of his drug money and hooked up with Jerry Heller.

Impact On A Legend doesn't feature Eazy-E's homies MC Ren, Gangsta Dresta, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre or anyother of his Ruthless Homies. Though it does include artists such as Phalos Mode, Loco S.A.B., Loesta, Roc Slanga, The Genie, Cashish, and more. The beats to pretty much almost every track are solid gangsta, though there are very few song, its worth buying if your a True Eazy-E fan!

BUY THE FU**IN THING.I cant make it any simpler, the dvd alone is worth your money. Then on top of it all it comes with unreleased material which is all classic material. This album makes you realise what a shame it is the E is no longer with us and that he deserves to be put in the same category as tupac and biggie. Because with out eazy-e and N.W.A who knows what would of happened to the careers of artists such as biggie and tupac who both have harsh lyrics that N.W.A made exceptible. GIVE ME A HELPFUL VOTE IF YOU BELIEVE EAZY-E HAS THE RIGHT TO BE CATAGORISED ALONG TUPAC AND BIGGIE.

One Of The Easiest Exodus Albums To Get Into With A Killer Title Track........2006-07-24

OK, firstly i don't know why this album gets such a bad wrap, particularly by outsiders & supposed music critics who have no idea what they are talking about. To illustrate my point, if you go to the allmusic site, you'll see that the reviewer says that it was a rushed album that was carelessly thrown together with painfully silly lyrics that sound like they were only an after thought. Well it sounds pretty damn awesome to me for rush job. Geez i wish every band could still pull off a rush job like this one nowadays, if it is in fact a rush job. And how could you not like lyrics like "we never knew we left the ground, like a warhead targetbound". If you're looking for depth then go read some philosophy books, this is a straight ahead thrash album, lyrical depth is not a requirement. What's more is they go on to say that it's just endless riff upon endless riff. Ahhh yeah, and..... isn't that the general idea. The riffs in this album are catchy stomp riffs & really keep you interested. I hate albums full of songs with boring riffs that don't grab or hold your interest or songs that only have a good riff halfway into the song that lasts about 10 seconds & then the song reverts back after the riff ends. The vocals sound just right & just like they have since Pleasures Of The Flesh. The guitar sound is perfect & how i like it to sound, not too low & bassy like that crap modern day metal guitar sound, but still heavy with plenty of crunch. The production is not perfect, but reasonably good. In fact i couldn't really say a bad thing about this album. I personally found this to be the easiest Exodus album to get into, along with Pleasures Of The Flesh & i immediatly found myself liking this album from the word go. In my opinion the stand out tracks on this album are Impact Is Imminent & Thrash Under Pressure. As another reviewer on here stated, this is one of the last "true" speed/thrash albums. I happen to think 1989 to 1991 were some good years for thrash even though it wasn't particularly the eye of the storm so to speak & thrash was dying at this point. Unfortunatly this album is currently out of print, but if you could get your hands on it & chose not to buy it, you seriously have rocks in your head if you consider yourself a serious thrash lover & Exodus fan. Highly recommended, buy or die.

Decline was imminent.......2005-12-30

The title of my review is by no means a negative statement on this Exodus effort. This album can be just as brutal as their previous three. However, during this album they get a little too goofy. They're not as serious and dark as they were in their previous efforts. My favorite songs are Impact is Imminent, AWOL, Only death decides and Changing of the guard. The other songs are good, but not as good as the ones previously mentioned. Of course, only you can decide.

this album is a must-have for any real thrash fan. Exodus has always been a band that had everything perfect. Perfect beats, perfect heavy distortion, perfect riffs, perfect vocals, etc. Rick Hunolt and Gary Holt are maybe the BEST thrash guitar duo. Every song on this album is heavy and if you aren't gonna get this, YOU ARE RETARDED!

Brutal.......2004-07-17

This album has got to go down in history as real metal way ahead of its time.The riffs are catchy & ultimately heavy. Gary Holt is a musical genius and deserves greater recognition for all his accomplishments. This is a brilliant follow up to Fabulous and is definatley "huge" must if you like Exodus.

THRASH UNDER PRESSURE!!!!!!.......2004-03-02

total thrash,exodus is one of my fav bands and i am also a humungus fan of thrash,i first heard of these guys in a magizine and it had the history of thrash,by that time i heard of exodus.every track in here are brutal insane thrash (eg.impact is imminent,only death decides,heads they win (tails you lose). i dont get why people say that zetros vocals are annoying and chessy,i think they are awesome it fits really cool with the music.the H-team definitly got riffs of blindin speed almost as good as fabulous disaster (their 3rd album)i usually would recommend exoduses first album bonded by blood,but this is best album of 1990 i recommend it to anyone that really loves thrash metal.

The Clumsy Lover's Rock at Turbo Speed!.......2003-03-29

I became a fan of The Clumsy Lover's when I saw them live at a club in Salt Lake City a couple of years ago. Now everytime they come to town I see them play...which is quite often. They are incredible! They have a unique celtic/bluegrass thing going on. I have all of their CD's...but this one is still my favorite (LIVE is really good too). I especially like their cover of Bob Dylan's "Don't think twice, it's alright" and the tune "London Bridge". I highly recommend this CD to anyone who may like listening to something a little different and extremely upbeat. If I'm in a bad mood this music always picks me right up and makes me want to dance. Just a word of warning...if you listen to this CD while driving you may get speeding tickets!

In the history of reggae and dub, most attention gets focused on two, key Jamaican studios: Lee "Scratch" Perry's Black Ark and the definitive tastemaker, Channel One, founded in 1974 and 1975 respectively. Largely forgotten is Randy's Studio 17--a place frequently used by Perry before Black Ark--founded by Vincent "Randy" Chin and in operation from 1968 to the mid-1970s. Clive produced all the tracks on this expanded CD and, while conservative in comparison to King Tubby and others, demonstrates considerable dub chops. The music is sleek and more instrumentally broad than much 1970s dub, integrating copiously bouncy reverb on the bass and drums, horn solos, weird tape manipulations, and a more song-like approach to trance-heavy rhythmic underpinnings. The All Stars here are awesome: Augustus Pablo, Aston "Family Man" Barrett, Sly Dunbar, Ansel Collins, Eric "Bingi Bunny" Lamont, and many others. --Andrew Bartlett

Sparse Early Dub.......2006-01-24

This disc starts out promisingly enough, with the five star instrumental workout 'Jaro,' which takes a catchy melody and fills it in with plenty of grooving sax, eastern guitar, and tasty bongos. Never, during the course of the remainder of the disc, do we reach such heights. This is early dub, and what that usually amounts to is the tracks being stripped down, rather than being manipulated in ways that enrich them. So, we have a lot of very, very sparse rhythms, and not a whole lot else happening. Every so often some promising little instrumental bit will come in, and we hope that this will blossom into something interesting, but more often than not, we are left wanting more.

There are a handful of good tracks on here, a couple of exellent ones, and a number that have no meat on their bones whatsoever. I find the vast majority of these tracks too stripped down and too dry. Previous reviews seem to take the position that the instruments are more accentuated than on later dub (a la Tubby), but I find that the fine musicians working here are not heard much at all.

Dub Jam Session.......2001-09-25

This album is an example of what you get when you gather together a group of some of reggae's most talented musicians and let them do their thing. "Forward The Bass..." plays out like a dub jam session, with Clive Chin's mixing technique serving to accentuate, rather than manipulate, the sound of such respected musicians as: Tommy McCook, Augustus Pablo, Sly Dunbar, Mikey "Boo" Richards, and The Barrett Brothers, among others. "Forward The Dub..." is that rare dub album that focuses on great musicianship and instrumentation rather than over-
produced splashes of sound on top of "cookie cutter" riddims.

Unusually tone-sensitive dubs.......1999-04-08

Those hooked on the crunching bass and psychedelic effects of the King Tubby dynasty and Lee Perry may be disappointed in this collection of early to mid-1970's dubs issued by the team of Clive Chin, Errol Thompson and a broad cast of musicians. But the effect of these tracks is primarily musical as opposed to pyrotechnic. While E.T. manipulates the vocal track in a startling way on "Extraordinary Version" (a prototype of Skratch Picklz-style turntablism) and some intriguing mixes are found elsewhere, the engineering mainly puts the excellent music tracks into a more atmospheric perspective, maintaining and even in some cases improving the tone of the original performances. I get the feeling this will be one of the more overlooked B&F releases, but it shouldn't be.

Needless to say, Tom Green doesn't disapoint. I was unsure the first time I listened,...then realizing this was all a joke, it has become one of my most played albums on the ipod. Keep it up Tom, you've still got loyal fans...

Yeah, either you're going to buy it or your not. If you don't like Tom Green, then nothing is going to convince you get this, and if you hear this, you still won't give it a chance anyway. So Tom Green haters, just go ahead and look for something else.

This album screams old school, from the beats that sound like something straight out of the late 80s/early 90s, to Tom's Beastie Boys meets 80's Fresh Prince rapping...there are even some songs where you don't realize it's Tom rapping (though his voice becomes more familiar later in the album).

I take issue with the previous reviewers statement, "This is not a comedy album". Not true. It's a comedy album that is damn catchy and can be listened to over and over again. Think more along the lines of Bloodhound Gang. I mean, look: "I like to go to Hooters, The girls there think I'm a loser, but I don't care, I just like looking at their cooters". Um. How that's NOT a comedy album is beyond me. Or perhaps they are referring to the fact that this is a hip-hop album from beginning to end...no skits, no stand-up, no junk like that.
If you remember old school hip-hop or are a Tom Green fan, you'll definitely get a kick out of this album.

It's no joke..........2005-12-13

Tom Green: Prepare for Impact is one of the best rap records I've ever heard. I really dig the Soul Assassins and Cypress Hill sound, and EZ Mike (a.k.a. Mike Simpson, of Dust Brothers fame) does that sound in his own manner on some of the tracks. Dark, dusty beats with odd bursts of strings and trumpet melodies accent each line of Green's fierce wordage.

Tom comes through with some pretty dope rhymes, too. He's no comedian, as he states on one track. A virtual book of celebrities he's met or been snubbed by (or looking to start some beef with - except Paris Hilton...) can be heard on "People In My Neighborhood." "My Bum Is On Ya Lips" is so catchy, you may just find yourself wanting to do that for some odd reason, if only because of some of the rhymes he throws down! "Teachers Suck," the 'lead-off single' keeps your head bobbin', trying to grab on to some of the lyrics to rap along with Tom the next time you spin it. There is some sort of sub-sonic hypnotic property about most of the album, which I am attributing to the combination of EZ Mike's beats and Tom's word-wizardry.

The Canadian import includes a DVD which sports as much entertainment as the CD itself. 45 minutes of Canadian tour footage (across the province of Ontario) details just how much Jagermeister the Keepin' It Real Crew can drink, and the bonus features take you back to '92 with Tom's first posse, Organized Rhyme, in the 'classic Juno nominated' clip "Check The O.R." The video for "Teachers Suck" is also included in its entirety, and is something not to be missed. I'll leave it up to you all to figure out what the option "Whale Noises" does. It is truly sad one will likely not see this on MTV in the USA just yet.

Get it on import if you can't find another way to get it. The US version should be coming within the next calendar year, with an all-new version of the DVD, so don't miss the opportunity to grab hold of the Canadian version now!

A++! Highly recommended to all fans of Tom Green. Keep in mind parts may be funny, but it's not a comedy album! This is serious, old-school hip hop. Word to the Keepin' It Real Crew.
