It's tempting to label the Dave Matthews Band as torchbearers of the Grateful Dead's moderate rock fusion and send them off on the next summer tour featuring either Blues Traveler or the Spin Doctors. But there is more at work here, particularly on the band's second major-label release. Crash pairs soothing sounds (flute, acoustic guitar, six-string bass) with a dark emotional undercurrent. The South African (by way of Virginia) frontman reveals a rare intensity on the title track and the free-form "41," while the group shows that it's not afraid to let loose on songs such as the stirring "Too Much." Producer Steve Lillywhite adds an impressive sheen to the recordings. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:
"Crash" was definatly not a crash...as far as sophmore albums go.......2007-06-21
When Dave Matthews first started this band in the very early 90's, he noted that he did not know how successful DMB would be. They soon ignited a revolution in music consisting of solid rock mixed with jazz that appealed to different fan bases. Crash is an album that would appeal to the typical listener, and it would give goosebumps to those who really consider DMB to be one of their favorite bands.
In "Two Step", you really get introduced to DMB's tendancy to plod around and jam for 6+ minutes. It really is a nice feel when you listen to it. The third track off this album is "Crash into Me", which is their most successful single. "#41" is definatly a song to listen to. Because the song has such a catchy introduction, the listener instantly get's engulfed and is soon satisfied after its 6:39 running.
"Lie in Our Graves" is possibly their best song off this album. The story to this song is so subtle, yet you know everything when it ends. It simply talks about the story of a boy who is born, grows up, and eventually see's his friends and loved ones die off as he is there to stay. Because this song is better when heard live, I can't say that the middle jam is "gold". I'd probably have to say its "great". Because most of their live versions of this song clock in around 12 minutes, this 5:42 version isn't as packed, but it definatly is a piece of art.
"Proudest Monkey" is perhaps the most unique song on the album, because of its telling story. It is also a 9 minute plod of jamming that are very well expressed by Dave, Boyd, Stefan, Carter, and Leroi.
This album wasn't at all a "crash" as far as sophmore albums go. In fact, it was one of their greatest they've released. This album would definatly appeal to new fans, and it would give true fans goosebumps everytime they hear it.

There has never been a better showcase for improvisational rock than this 1971 concert recording, and few (if any) live rock albums are in its rank. With only two studio albums (and plenty of touring) under their belt, the Georgia sextet tore into the Fillmore East with road-tested buoyancy. Titanic guitarist Duane Allman was at the peak of his powers, pushing his foil, Dickey Betts, to unsurpassed peaks. Vocalist-keyboardist Gregg Allman would have been a star in any other setting; here he's merely one more component in a brilliant ensemble. Duane Allman died shortly after At Fillmore East shipped, and the Brothers haven't scaled such heights since. But, then, neither has anyone else. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

With popcorn acoustic guitars, trampoline fiddles, bumper-car bass lines, and caramel-coated sax, the Dave Matthews Band's major-label debut is like an evening at the fair. "The Best of What's Around" and "What Would You Say" swirl like the amusement-park ride on the album's cover, sweeping the exhilarated and lightheaded listener higher as the ride spins faster. "Satellite" glides breezily like the prettiest horse on the carousel, "Ants Marching" runs around hitting the bell with the sledgehammer and winning the largest stuffed animals at the target-range booths, and "Lover Lay Down" is the quietest moment on the disc--like the sun setting on a baby's sleeping, snow-cone-stained face collapsed on her daddy's shoulder. --Beth MassaAmazon.com
Vibrant, broadly accessible adult rock that features soaraway, acoustic-based melodies, intriguing fusion overtones (check the sax/violin interplay on "Dancing Nancies" and "Warehouse") and a vocalist as cool and poised as Sting. Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:
Beyond Words.......2007-06-01
This wild musical ride starts with The best of what's around possibly my favorite dave song to date it it is VERY CATCHY. The next is the radio-friendly what would you say which has some great hooks making it one of his greatest hits. Satellite has amazing acoustic guitar and is also a great song. Rhyme and Reason and typical sitution are phenaminal live but just as good on this cd. Dancing Nancies is another personal favorite of mine. Make sure to check it out on the live from central park cd. Ants Marching is the classic dave matthews song. it is an amazing song that pretty much sums up his style. Lover Lay Down is mellow and is the one song that takes time to grow on you. Nonetheless it is an incredible song and Dave does a great job in it. Jimi thing is very catchy also and they love to turn it into a jam in concert. Warehouse is also a concert jam and a great song. Pay for what you get is mellow but unforgettable another great vocal job by dave. #34 is a jam and it is a great way to sum up a breathtaking musical experience. If you are just getting into dave matthews band buy this cd, if you like dave but you dont have it you need to buy it. This is a great cd to listen to and an even better cd just to chill to.

It is one of the only albums that I can listen too straight and not get bored, nor skip a track. from ths softness of satellite to the fast pace motion of ants marching this album really tunes in to all of your emotions. as a previous reviewer mentioned earlier this is dave matthews band at its purists. where they actually like to play music with each other. even now 12 years later they are still together. each band member has a staple on this album. that's all i gotta say.

Colorblind isn't an adequate title for this album. Randolph's follow-up to 2003's Grammy-nominated Unclassified is bright and energetic as a tie-dye-patterned pinwheel. Mostly its 11 tunes are about grooves plucked from the era of Sly Stone and Stevie Wonder, dappled with brilliant classic rock musicianship (think Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck) and driven by frenetic verve. When things slow down, it's usually to let the young pedal steel virtuoso revisit his roots in the Holiness Church, although the team of pop-world songwriters he collaborates with make the lyrics of Randolph's R&B hymns ambiguous between devotion to a woman or to God. Guests Dave Matthews (singing backup on "Love Is the Only Way") and Eric Clapton (lending second guitar to a hot-but-rote cover of the Doobie Brothers' hit "Jesus Is Just Alright") are oddly subdued, but neo-soul diva Leela James puts sex and smolder into her duet with Randolph on "Stronger." Ultimately, though, this album's all about Randolph himself, who has loosened his grip on the blues and gospel bedrock of his earlier playing to become a master of flashy funk and rock riffs and the owner of a tone so gargantuan it's earned him a place in rock-guitar Olympus--if not Heaven. --Ted DrozdowskiAlbum Description

Rock 'n' Roll is not dead--it's flying like a phoenix.......2007-07-20
"Ain't Nothing Wrong with That" starts this CD with a party and the rock doesn't stop til the end. Okay, the styles vary enough to make things really interesting, but there's a core of solid rocked out soul interwoven into this CD that shines through.
"Jesus is just Allright" with Clapton is the best version since the Byrds. I also enjoyed both Leela Jones soulful groove and Dave Matthews. Really, there's not a bad song on this CD. It very much reminds me of the rock I used to love growing up.
The one good thing about coming to this CD almost a year late is that I don't have to wait so long for the next Robert Randolph CD.

She did and so did I. You know that an artist is on the right track when legends like Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, and Leela James want to join in.

Play it at "eleven".......2007-05-21
The sound is still solid, and I can imagine several of these songs becoming concert staples and jammable hits. Some of the southern rock sound which was so much of Wetlands is lost and is replaced with more of a funk/r & b sound, but it works.
After listening to it a few times, you will definitely find yourself turing it up to "eleven."

The Dave Matthews Band is moving its music forward incrementally. While Before These Crowded Streets offers more of the folky melodies and vaguely international rhythms that made this Charlottesville, Virginia, group a major record and concert draw, it also finds them adding subtle new colorings to the mix. Alanis Morissette guests on two cuts, "Spoon" and the disc's first single, "Don't Drink the Water"; banjo Bela Fleck steps in, too. Most intriguing, however, is the modernist string arrangement from the Kronos Quartet on the driving "Halloween." Matthewsat least partly fulfills his obvious hopes to lead something other than a jam band here; at the same time, Streets should keep his fans satisfied. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
wow.......2007-06-09
1. Pantala Naga Pampa- this song isn't much of a song, but it's good for what it is. you can find it played at the end of the D&T version of "jimi thing".
2. Rapunzel- this song shows how tight the band is together. it's played in 5:4 time, which is really tough. the whole song is tasty, and the bridge is a 6:8 turnaround with a great violin part. great song.
3. The Last Stop- this song makes a very large use of a middle-eastern scale. that's what makes it sound really egyptian, and although i really appreciate the influence, it's probably my least favorite on the cd. it is still a good song.
4. Don't Drink The Water- i really like this song. i like the live version better, because i think it has more energy, but this version is very good as well. i love the passion that the lyrics show and how the music describes it.
5. Stay- great single, although it's almost 6 min long. it's very catchy and has a black female vocal group singing in it. i love the two jams that the band goes into. dave is very good at describing feelings in terms of music, this one being love.
6. Halloween- This song is very funny. It sounds like dave is singing like he's frankenstein's monster or something. Sometimes it gets on my nerves, but it's musically a great song. really funny to listen to.
7. The Stone- halloween fades into just violins and stuff and flows into the beginning of the stone. that makes for a great intro. then the guitar comes in, and it's a very good guitar riff. this is the most dark of all songs on the album. it also has the best of all guitar riffs on the cd in my opinion, the verse, chorus, and transition back to the verse. it has a very long, awesome jam at the end and fades. amazing song.
8. Crush- I think this is my favorite of all dmb songs. again, dave describes love in the form of music very well. this is just a feel good song. the jam at the end blows my mind. tim reynolds, leroi moore, and boyd tinsley are all soloing at once. even dave has a few funky chords in the jam himself, the closest thing to soloing i think i've ever heard from him. also one of the best live songs by dmb.
9. The Dreaming Tree- I love this song. It has a great story and just a great feel to it. A great bass line (not as great as in crush) carries the song through the verse.
10.Pig- this song has a great message to not waste days away, and that we take tomorrow for granted too much. musically, it's not as good as some dmb songs, but it's still good.
11. Spoon- This song is very jazzy, and has a guest female vocalist. i'm not sure, but i think she is the girl that plays with damien rice. it's a great finale to the whole album, a great way to end it all off.
Bottom line is, this cd is great. it's a lot different from other dmb albums, but if you're more of the listener that just cranks it up and listens to it instead of playing it in the background, this is probably the one cd by dmb that is most enjoyable when you have it really loud. you have to listen to this whole cd at one time to get the full effect. if you enjoy this, i recommend sunrise over sea by the john butler trio.
fantastic............2007-03-27
Some of my favorite cuts include "Last Stop," which eerily illustrates what was to become of the relationship between the United States and the Middle East, only three years later, when 9/11 took place (chillingly prophetic), "Stay," which is an upbeat, fun, and calypso-inspired romp in the grass and makes you feel like the sun is shining even if you're listening to it in the pouring rain, "Crush," a beautiful jazzy love song, and "The Dreaming Tree," which is poetic, ponderous and devestating. There really isn't a "bad" song on here. Dave Matthews is a fantastic story teller and he wrote most of the songs himself. This album is an example of rock/crossover music at its best.....
Rocky Roads.......2007-03-27
"Streets" marked a shift in his band's sexily sour and dreamily dour demeanor. There is still the classic romantic chaos ("Rapunzel" and "Stay") and the seeping wonderment of his melancholy moods ("Crush," "The Dreaming Tree," and "Spoon"), and as before it's done with meticulous attention to every chord and spark, every pluck and quaver.
Here, however, Dave has chosen also to get really, really angry. He saturates those moments with just as much technical skill as ever, but gone is the lyricism, replaced by Dave ripping resentful and revenge-hungry tirades out of his throat as if they have been sawed into shape with a cheese grater. I'm not saying he shouldn't be angry (his vendettas are against the rape and loss of cultures/land and also sometimes against things more difficult to pinpoint); I'm just saying he's more skilled at singing about love and bittersweet loss than he is at growling about drinking water and "Halloween."
Not DMB's best album, but still good.......2007-03-15

Dave Matthews doesn't exactly seem thrilled about this release. But how would you feel if you made an album with a producer you didn't like, dumped it, and then woke up one morning to find it leaked on the Internet and available at every bootleg stall in New York City? That's pretty much what happened with "The Lillywhite Sessions," the unreleased, darker predecessor to the blockbuster Everyday album. Rather than turn their back on the fans, however, Matthews and company returned to the studio to do the job right. On Busted Stuff, they revive those solemn songs with diligent intensity, creating lovely swaths of melancholy and transcendence. Elegant tracks like "Grace Is Gone" and "Digging a Ditch" replace the dreary gloss of the last album with dazzling intimacy, and even the band's usual tendency for meandering jazz-rock flights is kept in check by the sheer weight of the material. Impressive stuff, in spite of what Matthews apparently thinks. --Aidin VaziriAlbum Description

Is this a big-tent revival? A funky throwdown? A jam-band juggernaut? Unclassified is all that, and so much more. The story of Robert Randolph is Hollywood-issue: kid from the gritty Jersey streets is saved from the bad life by playing steel guitar in a House of God Church. Of course, it wouldn't mean a thing if the guy couldn't play, but he can really tear it up. By updating the sacred-steel tradition with heavy doses of blues, funk, and rock, he's not only emerged with his own sound, but he's brought the music full circle, returning those pop-music styles to their gospel roots. The disc reaches some terrific heights from the very start with a fiery trio of opening songs: "Going in the Right Direction," "I Need More Love," and "Nobody" are joyous, uplifting romps brimming with the fervor of gospel music. Four instrumentals show the breadth of the sound, from the country-tinged "Squeeze" to the modal and slightly spaced-out "Calypso" to the scorching gospel-infused closer "Run for Your Life." A couple of the slower tunes impede the album's momentum, but at its best Unclassified comes awfully close to capturing the intensity of the Family Band's live shows--which is no small feat indeed. --Marc GreilsamerAlbum Description
This debut studio album resurrects the spiritual fervor of gospel, gutbucket soul of the blues, earthy power of R&B and raucous energy rock. Led by pedal steel guitarist Randolph, who has been compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix. Enhanced with behind the scenes footage. Digipak. Warner Bros 2003.Customer Reviews:

"Soul Refreshing" was the first cut I'd heard on an alternative station here in Knoxville. Took a bit to get the DJ to answer, seems I was the 4th or 5th person to call the station and ask who the group was.
The whole CD's solid, rocked out funk. The feeling is positive and uplifting. "Unclassified" would be a good CD to put on for a rainy day.
I also noticed that I had Robert Randolph in two other collections: "Power of Soul" a tribute to Jimi Hendrix doing "Purple Haze" and Santana's "All That I Am" playing on "Trinity."

CD-"Unclassified", that their are as many opinions attached to it and his
other CD's and any Grateful Dead release, and it all boils down to
what makes ones ears happy, thats all. This CD makes my ears happy, my
toe's tap, and my bootie do gyrations I didn't know it had in it.
This is a JOYUS, RIGHTOUS, FROM THE GUT TO THE MIND kind of music. To
answer a question that pops up in other reviews, "his simple songs", to
me itseems he is singing praise to his supreme being. The music that
backs the lyrics, and the music is also his expression of praise, not all
gospel is gospel. But what ever you believe in has to be moved by Robert
Randolph & The Family Band. But other than that, this CD and other of
theirs is a vary strange balance of reach out and grab you by the guts,
and an aquired taste. Brave new concept, great music, praise your deity
that their are bands out their that cannot and probably never be pigeon
