Amazon.com essential recording

Sinatra already had one youthful career behind him by the time he made Songs for Swingin' Lovers! His were no longer the lustrous pipes of the kid crooner from Hoboken--the voice that made bobbysoxers swoon--but from the first notes of the opening track ("You Make Me Feel So Young") he seems to have discovered a musical fountain of youth that fully justifies the exclamation point in the album title. There's a buoyant new spring in his step, accented by Nelson Riddle's lighter-than-air arrangements, that makes the Columbia records of Sinatra's younger days sound stiff and stodgy in comparison. Even chestnuts like "Old Devil Moon," "Pennies from Heaven," "Makin' Whoopee," and "Anything Goes" are rejuvenated by his vibrant touch. Put this alongside his previous Capitol album, In the Wee Small Hours, and you have the definitive statements by both sides of Sinatra's mature musical personality: the lonely "saloon singer" and the swaggering, sophisticated swinger. Sinatra's carefree confidence achieves its supreme expression in "I've Got You Under My Skin," a performance that builds steadily to an ecstatic climax. Cole Porter may have hated his lyrical embellishments, but by the time the singer jauntily breaks the "fourth wall" on "Anything Goes" ("...may I say before this records spins to a close..."), you can't deny he's taken the title to heart. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Quite Possibly the Greatest Sinatra Album of All Time--And One of the Greatest Albums of All Time.......2007-06-19

For sheer joy and energy, this is Sinatra at his apex. Every song is excellent, with crystal-clear sound, brassy horns, top-notch Nelson Riddle arranging, and Sinatra at his vocal best. This album is often listed as one of the top 100 albums in any genre ever made, in often eclectic lists including everything from the Beatles to Nirvana to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and the Beach Boys. And though it's hard to narrow it down to one album, this is in my opinion Sinatra's best. The songs are upbeat, and there is no way one can listen to this album without feeling better about life.

I have this on both CD and vinyl. The sound quality on the CD is clear and sharp.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Albums of all times.......2007-06-10

This is one of the greatest albums ever.
If you want some upbeat romantic songs, this is it.
If you want a great 2nd marriage song for your 1st dance , new kinda love is or you.
enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Too marvelous for words.......2007-02-28

Frank Sinatra polished and perfected his style and expertise to incredible heights by the 1950s. Songs For Swingin' Lovers demonstrates how Frank Sinatra could deliver a song beautifully and masterfully. The liner notes correctly state that by this point in his career Frank had "learned to tease and twist a vocal line without violating its integrity." Moreover, Nelson Riddle ably assists Sinatra by providing sublime musical arrangements for all the songs on this CD. Frank and Nelson make each song so beautiful that you would swear you were hearing these songs for the very first time! There is a freshness to each number that stuns you. Excellent!

The CD opens with the Frank Sinatra signature song "You Make Me Feel So Young." Frank's voice has matured into a strong, masculine and potent force that could caress a song or belt it out depending on how Sinatra thought it should be performed. The big band arrangement by Riddle shines, too. This track alone is worth the entire cost of the CD!

"It Happened In Monterey" follows; this song has a beautiful intro by the musicians and Sinatra sings this number with all the panache of the most consummate professional ever! "It Happened In Monterey" explores a romantic affair that may well have been Frank's one true love even if he was already committed to another woman.

Other great classic numbers on this CD include the playful "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me;" "Too Marvelous For Words" which deals with the joy Frank experiences with his new lover; "Pennies From Heaven" with its great orchestration and the amusing song entitled "Makin' Whoopee" by Donaldson and Kahn.

"Our Love Is Here To Stay" gets the super-duper romantic treatment from The Chairman Of The Board; Riddle's arrangement helps to make this number an instant Frank Sinatra classic. "Anything Goes" again demonstrates the magic Sinatra and Riddle infuse into a song to make it so very special.

The CD ends with "How About You?" written by Lane and Freed. Sinatra asks his new love if she likes all the same pleasures in life that he values so much. "How About You?" also draws you in so that you experience the irresistible temptation to listen to the entire CD all over again!

The liner notes boast great cover art and the song credits are provided, too. Pete Welding contributes an essay about the work that Sinatra and Riddle did together.

Sinatra fans should consider this CD to be a "must-have" for their collection; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will treasure this album, too. If you enjoy this CD I highly recommend other Sinatra CDs. Diehard Sinatra fans will also want to get Frank Sinatra: Vegas which features four CDs and a DVD as well.

Thank you, Frank and Nelson!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Awful mastering muddies up a truly great album.......2007-02-23

You'll see other postings here that discuss the details of what Capitol's engineer did on this 1998 release to reduce hiss, etc. Believe it. Compared to the 1991 version of the disc or the better Mobile Fidelity gold disc (1990) this version is awful. It's like a bucket of mud was dumped over his vocals. There are a bunch of threads on this topic on the forums of Steve Hoffman, one of the best sound engineers in the business. But the bottom line is most people who care about this music would like to see Capitol go back to the original master tapes and treat Frank right. The mastering issues apply to a lot of the 1998 Sinatra discs labeled "Entertainer of the Century" on the side.

5 out of 5 stars A Must.......2007-02-14

This is the album to have for any Frank Sinatra fan.
I think this is the best representation of Frank's finest vocal years.
Every track on the album is good.

John Coltrane has always been best known for stretching the limits, creating titanic, extended improvisations filled with exploding, cascading flurries of notes, but he was also one of the most lyrical of musicians, capable of the most heartfelt and touching ballads. The material here is taken from his Impulse! recordings made between 1961 and 1963, drawing largely on Ballads, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, and Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, albums that showcased his sensitive side. Coltrane's silvery sound brought an utterly new dimension to tenor saxophone balladry, a metallic clarity in which each note is given its own luster and nuance. Listening to these ballads gathered together, Coltrane seems to touch on every mood of romance, from longing to rapture to reflection, imbuing each song with an ineffable grace. His theme statements are sublimely beautiful, while his improvisations add new depths with their unique mix of strength and delicacy. "In a Sentimental Mood," with Ellington's shimmering, bell-like piano figure and Elvin Jones's animated drums perfectly complementing Coltrane's tenor, is simply one of the most memorable ballad performances ever recorded, but it's surrounded here by other gems. "Soul Eyes" is wistful reverie, while "You Don't Know What Love Is" has touches of an unsettled, passionate incantation. The tracks with Johnny Hartman are a rare meeting between a singer and a musician who are profoundly attuned to one another, with Coltrane's flutelike fills on "My One and Only Love" or his solo on "They Say It's Wonderful" conversational expansions on the lyrics' sentiments. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-03-08

This my first Coltrane CD. I don't listen to jazz a lot but I really enjoy relaxing to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Silky and Sentimental Smooth Jazz.......2007-01-07

"If I should write a book for you. That brought me fame and fortune too. That book would be like my heart and me. Dedicated to you. And, if I should paint a picture too. That showed the loveliness of you. My art would be like my heart and me. Dedicated to you."

The sensual mood of "Coltrane for Lovers" dips into sentimental beauty throughout and creates a dreamy romantic world of smooth jazz. The entire album is slightly more than intoxicating, with the feeling that you have just fallen in love and are living in some jazz haze.

Don't be surprised if you start to look for songs by Ella Fitzgerald or listening to songs with lyrics like "I think of you night and day." ;). The cover of "Dedicated to You" leads in that direction. The entire album has an old-fashioned appeal with a modern mood.

5 out of 5 stars Milk Trane.......2006-10-25

Coltrane For Lovers is thoroughly agreeable, and highly recommended, but only for those with limited knowledge of Coltrane's oeuvre. It's a compilation, all the tracks are readily available elsewhere, so in no sense is it "essential." What's best about it is that, in addition to being a soothing audio bubble bath that brings its own candles, it may lead neophytes deeper into the ballad side of Trane, for example, Coltrane and Hartman, Crescent, and Ballads.

Coltrane was a man of incredible surprises, but the greatest of them may be his genius around a ballad - stunning contrast to the explosive "sheets of sound" that put him on the map and secured his place in history.

The folks at Impulse! - with characteristic marketing savvy - have done their cherry-picking wisely, the CD is almost an assortment of "big hits," if such a thing is possible in jazz. Coltrane stalwarts are here including McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and the amazing Elvin Jones on drums. There's also the treat of hearing Coltrane and Duke Ellington together, arguably a more historically important pairing than the much trumpeted, recently released, Trane and Monk collaboration.

Aside from Sentimental Mood, with Duke Ellington, and One And Only Love, with Hartman, the jewel that shines most brightly in this crown is After The Rain, an original Coltrane composition. (The slow descent and brooding atmosphere are reminiscent of Naima.) Tyner's piano is especially choice. After The Rain is simply one of the most beautifully evocative songs ever recorded by anyone.

One might say Coltrane For Lovers is for people who want the hipness of owning a Coltrane CD without the trouble of listening to him - the "rose without the thorn" syndrome. However, if, in the middle of making out with this music on in the background, they learn a little and are encouraged to dig further - where's the harm?

The more interesting question, or objection, is, to what extent is woozy, cocktail lounge music ideally suited to lovers? I would argue that this CD is perfect for couples in the first 6 weeks of love - while CDs like A Love Supreme, Ascension, and The African Brass Sessions paint out a more three-dimensional, passionate, and realistic portrait of love. Let's hope the neophytes dig that deep.

5 out of 5 stars soul eyes.......2005-01-26

I love tis cd, it is soooo perfect for a candle light dinner with you lover. I can't stop listening to it.

4 out of 5 stars Oh So Soothing.......2002-03-23

Now this Coltrane CD is a true feast for the ears. Unlike Stellar Regions, Coltrane For Lovers is soothing and filled with several catchy songs. Coltrane's saxaphone is front and center, however the piano, bass, and drums interwine very nicely. Vocalist John Hartman contributes nicely on three tracks. Its a shame there is not more of his work on this release.

The tone is pretty constant on the eleven tracks. However that is probably the only drawback. Because this collection most certainly can set a romantic mood. Pick it up and play it for your special someone. You'll certainly charm his or her heart.

5 out of 5 stars "UHP! I'M AN IDIOT.".......2007-04-16

The last time I went home to Los Angeles - (You remember, I told you THAT story in my review for the Huffy Good Vibrations Men's 24-Inch Cruiser Bike. Are you paying attention here, or not?) - I called the BITTER BROTHERS and arranged a "Bitter Breakfast." That's a meeting where a bunch of us macho fellas - er, I mean, "Men" - get together to blow off steam over quiche and champagne. Uhm, that is, over Huevos Rancheros and strong, black coffee. (Let's be honest, the "blowing off steam" part could just as easily be called "Male Gossip", but . . . well, you know, I've faked a pretty good masculine facade for myself at Ammyland up to this point, and I'd hate to see it all go to ruin now.)

So, me an' my Bitter Bros were expressing our bitterness at The Sidewalk Café on Venice Beach one morning (perhaps the definitive "L.A. Experience") and observing the Frisbee-catching dogs, the rays-catching one-eighth dressed roller-skating babes, and the usual Carnival of Human Freaks parading past the Café, when I noticed this young cat playing some pretty fancy guitar over yonder. My soul emptied of its bitterness, and my glass emptied of its champa - my cup emptied of its coffee - I went to talk to the young cat and learned that he was a Russian bloke named VADIM, and I bought one of his self-produced compact discs. ["Vadim #1"; vadimrecords at yahoo dot com, or (310) 801-4212]

Well, I eventually just went crazy for track three: "Bossa-Nova." And having heard the term about a zazillion times (that's a lot!), I decided I simply must find out just what BOSSA NOVA really is. So I did an internet search and what I learned is that I have been in love with Bossa Nova music for pretty much my entire life without ever knowing it. {*He's a tad slow, folks, but give him four and a half decades and he'll figure it out.*}

You see, as a young kid in the early and mid-1960s, when the Bossa Nova craze was at its zenith, my Grandpa used to play it around his house. My Ma had an 8-Track tape (yeah, I'm bitter AND old, OK?) containing the gorgeously haunting song "The Shadow Of Your Smile." I loved it, and the song still makes me think of her. Wait a second. . . . . {*"Macho fellas" don't get teary-eyed, Stephen!*} . . . . Sorry. OK. Then later, in my mid-20s, I owned the classic Jazz album "Getz/Gilberto" on licorice pizza (that's LP, not 8-Track!) and I played the hell out of it (well, I would have if there had been any hell in it), falling in love with the beautiful saudade in Astrud Gilberto's voice. (Saudade? Look it up on Wikipedia.) Only Karen Carpenter's voice was infused with more, and - in my op - the standard ballads by Bobby Darin are the only example of Saudade in a male voice. (Despite the jocular exterior, my entire life is one of Saudade, but I don't know you well enough to tell you more.)

Then love came to me again in the form of Pat Metheny's three brilliant Brazilian-influenced albums, "The First Circle", "Still Life Talking", and "Letter From Home." About the same time, I owned a Cannonball Adderley album that included "Clouds" and "Morning Of The Carnival" and they were my favorite cuts, but I couldn't have told you why exactly. I also loved Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" from his "Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus" album, but the Bossa Nova connection eluded me. And when my Good Friend Melanie gave me Angelique Kidjo's "Black Ivory Soul" recording, I loved it immediately from the first few notes down to the very last ones, and I rarely embrace new music that quickly. But I still hadn't made the Bossa Nova Connection. It took a Russian cat playing Brazilian music on Venice Beach to make this American dude finally realize that the thread running through it all has always been Bossa Nova, and that Bossa Nova is the thing I dig! Hey, it required only 43 years for me to piece it all together; I'm just a mental dynamo! {*"Uhp! He's an idiot."*}

So, I just bought "BOSSA NOVA FOR LOVERS", and here's my assessment of each of its 16 tracks:

1. VIVO SONHANDO: Classic! I remember this one from my Getz/Gilberto album. Stan was one of the first major Jazz cats I got into.
2. WAVE: Wow! I've just learned that Antonio Carlos Jobim is the musician who transformed Samba into Bossa Nova.
3. THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE: [Sniffle! Sniffle!] I want Astrud to sing this one at my funeral.
4. CORCOVADO: Not the version from the Getz/Gilberto set, but nice guitar from Almeida, and Getz really plays that tenor sax! {*Yeah, but can he pitch?*}
5. MY FOOLISH HEART: Marry me, Astrud! I promise I can learn to behave myself!
6. AMOR EM PAZ: Sheesh! Talk about Saudade. Love it!
7. MISTY ROSES: Makes me misty. Astrud, play Misty for me.
8. DESAFINADO: Jobim is the Boss of Nova.
9. SO NICE (SUMMER SAMBA): Oh, gee, I swear, I melt. One of my very favorite tracks. Too short! More! More!
10. WINTER MOON: "Winter" warms my heart. "Great Getz!"
11. INSENSATEZ: Well, let's face it, along with "The Girl From Ipanema", this is the face of Bossa Nova.
12. DINDI: Astrud sings. What else ya need to know?
13. BAHIA: Cool!
14. THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA: I prefer the version with Getz and Astrud, of course, but great melody regardless.
15. O GRANDE AMOR: Beautiful!
16. MEDITATION: I dunno; let me contemplate it further.

I see that I used the word "love" seven times in this review. I don't ordinarily use that kind of language, but the collection IS called "BOSSA NOVA FOR LOVERS", and I guess I'm a lover after all. {*Nah. He's an idiot.*}

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-11-05

A little too many instrumental music only songs, but otherwise good compilation of popular bossa nova love songs. Although, I would highly recommend Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour if you like the collection on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Listened to it at a friends house.......2006-03-19

I don't have any Bossa Nova music, except for the Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour, so when I listened to this CD at my friends house I knew I had to get it. It gives you a good representation of the classic Bossa Nova. Good variety of songs by the traditional performers. It is also great soft music to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2005-09-17

The music on this album is smooth and inviting. The perfect music to play as a background for a cocktail party - or for intimate moments with the one you love. Even in the coldest temperatures, this album will warm you up!

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, melodic, intimate.......2003-02-10

Outstanding collection of romantic tracks from the giants of Verve's roster. No surprises really among the selections, but who wants a jarring surprise in the middle of a romantic interlude? This set goes down so nicely it won't matter that you may have most these tracks in so many other anthologies.

This is a beautiful album. An essential album for fans of jazz ballads...music at a level that only a genius, like Miles, could create.

5 out of 5 stars Cool, cool, cool!.......2006-02-12

This is my first Miles Davis CD. I bought it because I love Chris Botti, and he has mentioned that he admires Miles Davis' work so much that I wanted to hear for myself. I LOVE this CD!!
It's so relaxing and soothing. I've had it playing all day and all evening on my computer on "repeat" and it just goes on and on being wonderful. Run over to Borders and pick it up...just in time for Valentine's Day!! This is some very romantic music!

4 out of 5 stars Miles Moods.......2004-02-20

Heard this one playing over the intercom in Borders and bought it on the spot. Already own some of these tunes on other discs but this compilation is special with one exception. Round Midnight just doesn't sound right on this disc compared to the other 12 songs. Substitute SOME DAY MY PRINCE WILL COME or SURRY WITH THE FRINGE ON TOP and this disc would be complete. Guranteed to put you in a mellow mood.

Lovers Speak marks not only Joan Armatrading's return to recording after an eight-year hiaturs, but to the stripped down, folk-rock sounds of her earlier years. Armatrading here plays most of the instruments herself, as well as the role of producer, and while she's a fantastic talent, the collection has a few thin spots, both in terms of production and song quality. However, Lovers Speak is a solid enough collection for the true fan, and would serve the novice listener well as an introduction to her more current output. The numerous standouts include the guitar- and percussion-driven title track and "Let's Talk About Us," the heartrending "Less Happy More Often," the beautiful and intimate "Crazy for You," and the introspective "Blessed." "In These Times" is a solemn piano ballad, surprisingly written before the events of 9/11, that makes you want to call your best friend. --Lorry Fleming

Album Description

5 out of 5 stars The Ocean Speaks.......2006-11-19

Most of the music I have by Joan Armatrading is on vinyl. "Whatever's for Us," her debut from 1972, her self titled LP from 1976 & "Show Some Emotion" from 1977. I think my last LP was "The Key" from 1983. I found this CD @ $1 sidewalk sale and was curious what Joan was up to. Wow! What an amazing set this is! This CD is stunning from the opening title track with her booming out, "I wanna learn the language of love." Joan makes "Physical Pain" sound fun as the bass line is so original, "I feel lost; I feel alone; With no desire, I feel numb." "In These Times" is a cousin to John Lennon's "Imagine" with Joan's stately piano punctuating the lofty thoughts, "In these times do you pray to God? In these time everyone needs comfort & would welcome a hand to hold." "Waiting" is a gem that gets your toe tapping with Joan's voice oozing longing, "I'm waiting for you baby." "Prove Yourself" is about as catchy as can be with a sunny message, "You're gonna get married, you're gonna be rich." "Fire & Ice" is stunning track with Joan's counter-melody punctuating the gorgeous music, "I don't wanna go anywhere without you." "Ocean" displays Joan's unique sense of melody in another lovely track, "Like the ocean speaks to the naked man; The rhythm of your heart is like a sonnet." On "Less Happy More Often" Joan's vocals are so bare, so raw, so full of emotion that she breaks your heart. "You Made Your Bed" rocks out, "All of the great little pleasures that you bring get cancelled out by the weird things you do." Other tracks like "Tender Trap," "Crazy for You," & the sweet closer "Blessed" are also excellent. This CD only went to #42 of the independent chart. For as blockbuster rich as this set is in great sounds, it deserves a wide audience. Be part of it! Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars better than brilliant!.......2005-10-28

8 long years of waiting and hoping for a great album. Well this is better than that. The stripped down production and beautiful lyrics just sing to your heart. Joan is BACK.

Every play reveals a new favourite. In These Times is probably the most poignant for the times we live in now and expresses those feelings we all have. Prove Yourself is a life affirming song to remind you not to buy into the negativity of others. Blessed is just beautiful and perhaps acts as a reminder to us all of the things we should be grateful for.

Joan's voice has matured with a beauty and soul that brings to life her songs, and alongside there is her exceptional guitar. How has this woman not been recognised alongside the greats of guitar is beyond me. Every arrangement holds new things every time you listen.

Joan is without doubt one of the most underrated, singer/songwrite/guitarists of all time and with this album she has proved a point - that long-term staying power is down to talent not the manufactured immediacy of todays pop. Long Live Joan!

Lover's Speak does everything from upbeat to reflective and back again. Buy this and you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-08-20

My sister likes Joan, and I've known it for years. This is the first serious listen to a Armitrading CD. Songs like "Lovers Speak" and "Prove Yourself" represent an incredible intensity and honesty, and kind of blunt honesty about life and love that one doesn't get often from the commercial radio world.

Most songs are fantastic on this collection. What better theme to build around than love. Well done Joan, you are a superstar!

5 out of 5 stars JOAN IS BACK & IS TOPS ON LOVERS SPEAK!!!.......2003-10-18

A fantastic new collection of songs from Joan! "PROVE YOURSELF" is a rocking rocker with a touch of country music flair to it ala Bob Dylan, George Harrison... Fantastic! "Let's Talk About It" is another well woven creative spark with great acoustic lead & electric guitar soloing by Joan. Her ending electric git solo is ala Jeff Beck! This girl can cut the mustard with any of the high roller git players Clapton, Jeff Beck, Santana etc...
I know this because I'm playing over 35 years myself. SHE CAN ROCK! The song is a splendid blend of melody & lyrics woven into a nice knit basket with a killer GIT SOLO! "Ocean" is another great acoustic song a real throwback to her early '70s songs. Joan has produced a SPLENDID body of songs here with REAL HEART & SOUL. UTTERLY CHARMING! Check out "TENDER TRAP" another tuneful song great melody & GREAT GIT git soloing by Joan! 8 years was a long wait for DIE HARD fans like myself and worldwide fans, but it was WELL WORTH IT! SHE IS TOPS!!!

5 out of 5 stars We're "Blessed" By Joan Armatrading's Return.......2003-08-21

Man, it's good to have Joan Armatrading back! After an absence of almost eight years, the woman who has influenced everyone from Tracy Chapman to Jewel has returned with LOVERS SPEAK, one of the strongest entries yet in an already sterling catalog. The disc opens with the piano-and-percussion driven title track. Said track brilliantly sets the mood for what is basically a concept album about love. With it's unadorned vocal and honest lyrics ("Lovers speak is so much different/Only they can understand/Let's all share this coded secret/Let us in let's all join hands/Lovers walk a different tight rope/Lovers always speak in tongues") Armatrading proves that, not only is she back, she's in top form, particularly on the soaring chorus ("I wanna learn the language of love/I wanna learn how to flirt/I wanna hear someone call out my name/And wipe away all the hurt"). "Physical Pain" is an edgy, mid-tempo rocker, while "In These Times" is a gorgeous piano-driven ballad. Next up is "Waiting", a sweet little song who's lightly toned arrangement masks a sad story about waiting up all night for a wandering lover, knowing full well that, while you pace and ponder (and are content to do so!), they're snug in someone else's arms. Then there's "Prove Yourself", an acoustic guitar-based rocker that plugs along at a hearty clip. With it's positive lyrics ("Some things are gonna come easy/Some things are gonna be hard/But don't let them put you off your stride/Cos you could make your own mark") and upbeat groove, "Prove Yourself" has you singing along by song's end. "Fire And Ice" is a lovely ballad that finds Armatrading dueting with herself. It's a unique idea, and one that works really well. "Love Bug" has to be my favorite track. With it's jazzy vibe and smirky vocal, it's LOVERS SPEAK's most upbeat cut. The percussion pops, the horns swing and Armatrading is charming throughout. A true gem! Things slow down a little with "Let's Talk About Us", but rebound nicely with "Ocean." Much of the song is sung in the upper register of Armatrading's smooth, deep alto, and it provides a lovely, ethereal counterpoint to the rest of the CD. "Tender Trap" is another high point. There's nothing unique about the arrangement - it's actually quite bare - or the lyrics ("We're lying peaceful in the tender trap"), but there's a certain.....calm.....about the song that anyone who has found that one true love can identify with. The exact opposite can be said about "Less Happy More Often"; this song is absolutely heart-breaking! With it's sparse arrangement and bare-boned lyrics ("Once in a little while/We share a thought/But most of all we drift apart/Haven't you noticed/We seem less happy more often"), this could well become one of the best break-up songs of all time! Things kind of come to a momentary halt with "Crazy For You", a whispery ballad who's overdone delicacy is it's eventual undoing. The song's attempt at tenderness ends up being snooze-inducing. Armatrading comes roaring back, however, with "You Made Your Bed." With it's sing-song vocal and staccato instrumentation, this soaring track could fit comfortably among many of Armatrading's best cuts from the 80's. The horns add a touch of sass, the lyrics are smart and sharp ("Not Lucifer/Not the Trinity/No one on earth can make you feel at ease/It serves me right/Cos I left you once/I broke my own rule/Because I wanted to please")and Armatrading really seems to be enjoying herself. LOVERS SPEAK closes with "Blessed." This musical prayer is touching in both it's simplicity and it's wisdom: "For all the things that I can do/How could I complain/I've got no broken wings/I've got a heart that sings/And I feel blessed." We the listeners are just as blessed - LOVERS SPEAK is a fine return to form for an artist who has been moving, challenging and thrilling listeners for over 30 years now. Welcome back, Joan!

i chanced upon this CD in a jazz section of HMV Hongkong. Intrigued more when I saw John Coltrane and other jazz stars in the list of collaborators. Great Coltrane and Hartman on the favorite "My one and only love". this rendition is enough to buy the CD. alot of great old songs. great voice of Hartman. Pity he died in 1983.

3 out of 5 stars Wide variety of slow, smooth jazz tunes.......2003-07-27

This is a compilation of soft, smooth songs by a variety of classic jazz and pop singers. It's good background music for a candlelight dinner, an evening of cuddling by a fire, a dip in the hot tub, etc. The songs, however, are slow, so if you're looking for something to get the sparks flying, this may not do it.
The CD is a great deal and has a fairly eclectic variety of artists and songs. It's a little too laidback for my tastes, but others may find that it's just right for them.
There are 18 tracks on this CD: A Kiss to Build a Dream On / Louis Armstrong, (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons / Nat King Cole, Isn't It Romantic? / Ella Fitzgerald, All of Me / Billie Holiday, Stardust / Sarah Vaughan, I Wanna Be Around, Blue Moon, You Are Too Beautiful / Johnny Hartman, Embraceable You / Billie Holiday, Fly Me to the Moon, I'm in the Mood for Love / Julie London, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, As Time Goes By, Ain't Misbehavin' / Carmen McRae, It Had to Be You / Harry Carney, Misty / Sarah Vaughan, The Man I Love / Ella Fitzgerald, and It's Magic / Dinah Washington.

There has never been an instrument that conveyed more romance than Stan Getz's tenor saxophone, from the breathy, beautiful tone--all air and gauze--to the rapturous sweep that he could bring to a melody. It's a sound both warm and cool--able to convey everything from hesitation to keening passion. Getz could also swing hard, but this compilation puts its emphasis squarely on the ballad side, picking up highlights from his Verve recordings from 1952 to 1968, placing him in intimate small groups to orchestral settings. Getz perfectly captures the breezy warmth of a Brazilian beach in his collaborations with João and Astrud Gilberto, including "Corcovado" and "Girl from Ipanema," while there's another kind of poetry in the way he floats across the orchestra on "Moonlight in Vermont" and "Alfie." Herb Ellis's guitar frames Getz beautifully on "I'm Glad There Is You," while Getz's stunning melodic invention is highlighted in two quartet tracks with pianist Bill Evans, "But Beautiful" and "Melinda." --Stuart Broomer

In a breathe; you know when you first get a CD, you play it over and over and over for about two or three weeks, then you put it away-Only to pull it out from time to time. I just can't; for the life of me, seem to be able to put this beguiling CD away. I am truly affixed by the intrinsic state I provisionally inherit each and every time I garner my surroundings with the music from this CD. I am literally tethered to the splendor of this CD and all that it entails. Simply stated: If you're looking to settle down after a tough day at the office; than "Getz For Lovers" is exactly what' required-Chardonnay is optional.

In my opinion "Getz For Lovers" is nothing less than a "Magnum Opus".

Para Machuchar Meu Coração, O Grande Amor, Corcovado, Girl from Ipanema, Moonlight in Vermont, Here's that Rainy Day, all of which are spendid. No tenor sax player could make a couple feel good like Stan Getz. This is the album to impress old and young for a romantic evening. Stan and Tony Jobim, we miss you.

A romantic blend of Bossa Nova, easy listening and smooth Jazz.

Best for candle-lit late night when you want to create beautiful mood and have a good time with your love one.

His music doesn't really sound like it's from the 60's. It's literally timeless.

Even when you're alone, slipping in a couch and holding a book, it makes a perfect companion.

I believe the 'Getz Effect' can be a useful tool for us to relax and get our minds back to the bright and peaceful state.

This CD pairs the first two 10-inch records Sinatra recorded for Capitol. In 1955, full-length albums by popular singing stars were still few and far between. These two platters marked the beginning of Sinatra's phenomenally successful relationship with conductor-arranger Nelson Riddle, and presaged the "concept albums" that would become such an important part of Sinatra's Capitol period. Songs for Young Lovers includes such romantic numbers as "My Funny Valentine" and "I Get a Kick Out of You," while Swing Easy offers up danceable versions of "All of Me," "Just One of Those Things," and others. Sinatra sounds great, and there's magic galore in these grooves. --Dan Epstein

5 out of 5 stars Each day is Valentine's Day........2007-01-13

This CD features Frank Sinatra's first two Capitol Records albums. Back in those days, albums were only ten inches wide, instead of twelve, and they usually had eight songs on them. Songs For Young Lovers was recorded in November, 1953. It features eight classic pop standards arranged by Nelson Riddle. The songs are all ballads, played with a slightly jazzy touch. Sinatra himself sings brilliantly, of course. Swing Easy was recorded in April, 1954. It also features eight standards arranged by Nelson Riddle. This time the songs are up tempo, with a swing jazz touch, but not swinging so much as to distract from Sinatra's singing. Sinatra is fantastic once again, proving why he is considered to be America's greatest interpreter of popular songs. Two great (albeit short) albums for the price of one.

5 out of 5 stars "You Took The Part That Once Was My Heart!".......2006-01-27

This CD fits the description of a "double delight." Two-great-albums-in-one-CD. The sparkling arrangements in both albums were done by none other than the greatest Sinatra arranger/conductor and my top favorite, Nelson Riddle, whom I believe possessed a kind of magic touch that brought out the very best in any singer that he had worked with. These two musical icons brought out the very best in each other. I loved all the albums they recorded together, with no exception. In my opinion, their collaboration resulted in the very best Sinatra-recordings-of-all-time. Mr. Riddle was truly a genius of an arranger/conductor and Mr. Sinatra was truly the best pop singer America ever produced and had enjoyed a world-class recognition.

I recently had dinner with a good friend of mine at one of my favorite restaurants, Buca di Beppo, and we were ushered-in at the Frank Sinatra Room. And to our delight, some Frank Sinatra music was playing on the background and I recall "All Of Me," a meaningful song from this CD, was played.

"Your goodbye. . .
Left me with eyes that cry
How can I get along without you?
You took the part that once was my heart
So why not take all of me?"

I consider this CD as one of the very best from my Sinatra collection. You can't just ignore Riddle's spectacular arrangements and Sinatra's par excellence vocal sophistication in all his performances. The first eight tracks were taken from November 1953 recording of "Songs For Young Lovers" and the last half was taken from "Swing Easy," an album recorded fifty-one years ago in April of 1954.

The Chairman of the Board will serenade you with the quintessential Valentine song, "My Funny Valentine" and an extraordinary song about gazing at stars, hearing guitars, walking as though you had wings, bump into things and feeling . . . "Like Someone In Love." He will dance with you and swing it easy to the danceable tracks such as "A Foggy Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You," "They Can't Take That Away From Me," "Taking A Chance On Love," "Just One Of Those Things" and "All Of Me."

One more thing . . . this is one of the many masterpieces of the great Sinatra/Riddle team.

One last thing . . . this is timeless music and so deserves that special spot in your music library.

4 out of 5 stars A Tale of Two Albums - One Good, The Other Great!.......2004-09-18

In my opinion, the "Songs For Young Lovers" portion of this double album, while good, is Frank Sinatra's weakest album at Capitol. On the other hand, the "Swing Easy" portion is superb.

Getting back to the first point: With the exception of "A Foggy Day," "I Get a Kick Out of You," "They Can't Take That Away From Me," and "My Funny Valentine" (and, possibly, "Violets for Your Furs"), the 3 remaining songs suffer from overly mawkish arrangements and singing. In particular, "Little Girl Blue" is just plain wimpy, and "The Girl Next Door" is handily beaten by Frank's Reprise-era rendition from 1962. George Siravo's arrangements are too syrupy for my taste, and Sinatra seems to be trying too hard to merely sound pretty as opposed to really grabbing you by the lapels as he normally does.

Don't get me wrong - I usually love Frank's ballad singing every bit as much as his handling of up-tempo numbers. However, this album falls short of his admittedly stellar standards. For far superior ballad singing, I would strongly recommend the following Capitol albums: "Where Are You?", "Frank Sinatra Sings For Only the Lonely," "In the Wee Small Hours," "No One Cares," and "Close to You." In other words, any of his other ballad concept albums for Capitol!

5 out of 5 stars And it melted wherrrre it lay.......2004-09-04

This review concerns the one song Violets For Your Furs where Sinatra sings "and it melted where it lay." He hits a low note on the word "where" that I have enjoyed for the last 25 years. I always considered it to be vocal magic, a stroke of genius. I recently played it for a girlfriend and she said it sounded way off. While I realize that it is out of his range I always found it to be perfect. I'd have to rate it as one of my top ten Sinatra moments. I later played it for a friend and he said it sounded awakward, like a mistake that should have been redone. He can't imagine Sinatra doing it on purpose and feels that at best it was a mistake that Sinatra must have liked and chose to keep. My friend thinks it sounds awful. On the live in Seattle 1957 Sinatra does the same thing so I guess it's on purpose. I would like some input on this. What do you people think? Post a review and or email me at johnparadis@webtv.net. I'm real interested in what Jonathan Schwartz has to say about this. It's keeping me awake at night!

5 out of 5 stars Five if you like jazz mellow, four if you want variety..........2004-02-11

This compilation from several Coltrane albums on Prestige from the 1950's is comprised of nine tracks, all seductive and slow. Of course the music is superb, with the only flaw being a lack of variety in tempo and mood. The world is filled with jazz albums "For Lovers" or with the title "Love Songs"--some are great and varied, like the compilations for Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Others, however, can get a bit...well, boring, like "Miles Davis Love Songs" and to a lesser extent, this one by the great 'Trane. John became quite controversial in the '60's when he jumped into the "free jazz" movement, which is hard on my ears and brain. His earlier stuff, however, is to die for. I like a bit more bop in my albums than this one offers, but it would be a fine introduction to a person who is a bit afraid of jazz or of Coltrane in particular. And after one gets to like these ballads, try "Blue Train" and "Giant Steps" and the compilation "'Trane's Blues." They rock. I already had three of the nine songs on this CD on other discs, but I bought this one anyway, for the other six and because I liked the three I already knew. Anything by John issued before 1960 is safe and great, and a few of his releases between 1960 and 1965 are also accessible. Scan the reviews and listen to the samples before you click on "purchase." My one real quibble with these albums designated for "lovers" is that the people who put them together seem to think that a toe-tappin' beat kills the mood. I think a couple of uptempo tunes to start off would get the blood circulating, and then one could settle down and get cozy with one's date as the ballads come along.
