My favorite CD..........2005-04-25

What an amazing album. Ken's first full-length album is simply awesome. His lyrics are fresh and funky, with great work from his whole band. His voice is mellow and unique, and I find myself enjoying every single song. It's been a long time since I've heard something this cool. I highly recommend this album, so much, in fact, that I'm buying copies for all my friends. I haven't stopped listening to it yet. This is an awesome CD!

"Is the cello absolutely vital for the show?"
"Uh... yeah, it actually kinda is."

I had no idea why it was so bloody important to him, but I had my staff shell out the extra $25 for the cello rental. When Ken hit the stage at KASCON XIX performing "Soma," I was floored.

Ken's music has its share of nice rhythms, smooth vocals, and well-written lyrics suitable for any fan of acoustic jingles.

He's a splendid chap, too. Along with Ed Gorski and Chris Ramos, he'll pose in any "plutonic picture" you request to be taken with him.

I just wanted to say that I love this album! I listen to it over and over again. In fact, it's the only CD I play in my car. The range of the music and the depth of Ken's lyrics make every track a winner.

And with respect to Not a Poet's review ... well, Ken's not like that ... I happen to know him and I know that he wrote that song in response to some people who were slandering him online. So the song's not directed at everybody, it's just directed at those folks who were spreading lies about him.

This album rocks! The music is fresh, the lyrics are real, and the mix of styles and sounds is amazing. Every song is accessible and easy to relate to. Ken's songs avoid cliches while staying musical. "End Credits" and "Half Step Down" have a great groove, and the cello and instrumental work on "Soma" is transcendent. This is a fantastically well balanced album from a genuinely gifted new artist. PICK THIS UP!!

Nouveau Tunes.......2005-04-01

I've listened to many artists' music and not one artist caught my attention as much as Ken Oak did. His music is classic and it definitely shatters the current monotonous mainstream music windows. I'm Asian so I can say this: It's a relief to hear tunes from an Asian artist that isn't ear wrenching, eye wincing music. Oak is actually completely the opposite. His soothing, soft, and might I add, sexy voice is something you can relax to in your car, at your home, or even at a party.

I bought this album on vinyl in 1957. Now,on cd, it's still the best.

Incredible, beautiful playing.......2006-07-08

I had heard about this recording for years, but didn't realize that it came out on disc. It was recorded in the 50's, but sounds like it was recorded yesterday - very crisp. I was a little skeptical at first, simply because there was a string section included. I was afraid it might ruin his playing. But the strings were beautifully and tastefully arranged, so Van Eps' guitar was clearly in the front of the mix. As far as his playing goes, it inspired me to go out and buy a 7 string guitar - that should tell you something! I've been playing for over 20 years, but this recording made me realize that, for solo guitar, the instrument isn't complete unless you have that 7th string.
Beautiful chords.. If you're a guitar fan or player, get it - simple as that.

this is solo guitar 101. and once you listen to it you realize it is solo guitar 401!for all its "mellowness" it is deceptive.on every track mr. vaneps does something remarkable. every track is a work of art, a very complex work of art. do yourself a favor and buy this cd!

This "Mellow Guitar" CD is just that. It is easy listening at its best. If you're looking for mellow background music for dinner or romance, this is the one. It's pure music of highest quality. (Another recommendation for background music is "My Favorite Requests" by John Arpin which is mellow piano.)

Nobody does it better.......2000-01-01

Pure, crisp, clean, perfect. 7 strings, of course, and the only guy who's ever made that work. Warm tone, unmatched, even on an old recording. This guy could teach Stradivarius how to play. I've been waiting for this to come out on CD for years... he's as rare as my '57 Strat. Don't pass it up. Whatever your guitar music preference is, from Henrix to Paco de Lucia, this guy is just awesome. You'll be wondering, "How'd he do that?", when you're not thinking, "Wow."

Geez! How do I describe this work?
1 guy; 1 guitar, 1 echo chamber/reverb...
It sounds like it'd be interesting for about four minutes, right?
Well, if you thought THAT, you'd be wrong!
This is stunning & gorgeous atmospheric work, that is well thought out & mature.
EVERY time I play this for someone, they inevitably "demand" to know who it is, so they can get their own copy.
You should get your own copy too.
The short snippets that are allowed on this website do not do the music justice. It slowly builds & develops; it is like watching a thin tendril of smoke rise in the air; not a bonfire. So if you don't really get excited by the few seconds you CAN hear, please understand that there is so much more. And, you'll hear it if you listen & allow it to work through the wispy and lovely compositions.
If the idea of having Mr. Frayne ( who IS "Lanterna") take you on a small, but delightful journey with his guitar, appeals to you, buy this CD
If you enjoy beautiful, well executed guitar work, buy this album.
My wife puts this on when she is alone in the house, then draws a bath. She's listens and relaxes for the entire album. It's that good; all the way through!
They only allowed me to give five stars. If I could I'd give more.
I've had this album for two or three years & it never fails to amaze & delight!
Buy it. You won't be sorry.

Running Down.......2005-09-12

Talk about autumnal. The third full-length release by Lanterna finds Henry Frayne exploring much the same haunted territory he's explored previously. 'Sands', if it refers to anything, seems to refer not to the joyous sun-drenched beach of a July afternoon, nor to the scorching desert, but to the sand of the hourglass upside down. Or maybe it's just rainy and foggy at the beach today. It's getting late in the year, see, and the next sound you hear will be silence. Or Young Gods' version of 'September Song'.

Sorry folks, but I don't get it. I wanted to like it, really.

It seems to me that each and every song would be a perfect background to a love scene from Top Gun IV starring Kathleen Turner and Jean Claude Van Damme.

Completely un-original. Our generation's version of Lawrence Welk...without the bubbles. It's awful.

5A ~ An Adorable Acoustic Aldo Album.......2007-05-13

An instrumental album that has both upbeat Jazz grooves and low-key New Age soothing melodies, all with wonderful acoustic guitar playing by Aldo. This album's New Age Jazz sound is just wonderful. It should get a lot of playing time in your office and/or at home when you need to unwind! Not quite sure who to compare Aldo with...he has his own unique guitar sound. At times Aldo's playing on "Close to You" reminds me of Govi (Tracks 2 & 3) and at other times he sounds a little like Peter White (tracks 4 & 9), Thom Rotella (Track 6) or Chris Spheeris (Track 10). Aldo on this album sounds nothing like the blues/rock guitarists Santana, Satriani, Clapton, or Atkins mentioned by the previous reviewers (at least not to my ears).

Aldo's music is beautiful.......2005-02-08

I first came across the Aldo music through the latest release of a CD called Passion by Soothingmusic.com. This CD was actually the 2005 release of Mehdi, that I happened to have all his CDs and enjoy them all very much. Having listened to the Aldo tracks (3 of them) so many times, I decided to have the full CD by Aldo which I got about a month ago. Aldo's music is beautiful and all tracks sound just great. I recommend this CD to all instrumental music lovers.

One of the Best Contemporary Guitar CDs I have ever heard.
My Guitar Hereos are Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Andres Segovia, Julian Bream, John Williams, and I have to put Aldo in the class with the finer Guitarists.

I like guitar music from Bill Monroe, Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins to Joe Satriani.
It looks like I will have to add ALDO to the list.

Just to wait for the slow fade up on Track 1, which is the title track, "Close To You" gives a sense of anticipation. Almost a tingle in the upper part of your spin and your ears can not wait to feel the strums of the strings. "Silent Star's" accompaniment gives a listener an Enya-like harmony yet adds an indescribable feeling to the music. Every one the ten tracks are an experience. I only wish that ALDO would give some indications to what inspired each song other than the title as a clue.

If you were looking for a contemporary classical guitar album, on par with the skill, power of performance and creative genius as other performers like Yanni and Carlos Santana? This is the album for you. The album is excellent for background dinner music, relaxing, or other appropriate adult activities.

West African palm wine music and American folk and blues all come together to make up the mellow rhythmic sound of the Palm Wine Boys. Palm wine music is West African roots music. Like folk and blues, the roots music of North America, it is the music of the township and village; "an expression of the day-to-day life of ordinary people, the music of their hearts. It tells of their joys, their sorrows, their pleasures and their displeasures" said the late S.E. Rogie, one of the great innovators of the genre. The Palm Wine Boys fuse the lyrical sensibilities of folk and blues with the guitar lines and rhythms of palm wine music to create a new form. They play innovative world roots music.

"Up & Down" will remind many of early highlife or acoustic calypso with its lilting melodies, irresistible bouncy rhythms, and playful lyrics. On the playful side, there's the opening lines of the title track: "Oh my lover she's like a hollow tree, you find comfort in the shade, even through its full of bees." Being folk music, it has a serious side also. For example, "Its Important", which Richard Linley, the band's primary writer, sang at his mother's funeral: "for all those who have come before us, they are the stepping stones on which we stand, they are the one who cleared the path through the forest, and its important to remember them."
The new CD features four part harmonies, the dual intertwining guitars of palm wine music, strong bass lines, occasional flute, and various African hand percussion throughout.
