Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Lyric and thoughtful, pianist Bill Evans proved an urbane bridge between the early bop style of Bud Powell and playful funk of Horace Silver, and the later, modern approach of pianists like Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett (indeed, Jarrett went as far as to record with Evans's backup band of drummer Paul Motian and bassist Gary Peacock). Evans's second album as a leader, Portrait in Jazz combines a pair of originals--"Blue in Green" and "Peri's Scope"--with a handful of show tunes and standards, including a version of "Someday My Prince Will Come" that pre-dates Miles Davis's adaptation. With a preference for irregular phrasing and a taste for unusual chord spellings, Evans was frequently able to recast old chestnuts and tired warhorses into new gems and spirited charges, as he does here with "Witchcraft," "Spring Is Here," and "When I Fall in Love." And although he recorded in many different formats throughout his career, including duets with himself, the power and beauty of Evans's trios helped him lay a special claim to that grouping. --Fred Goodman

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-04-16

This is my seventh Evans recording and it is like I am getting to know him all over again. This album has energy, freshness and joy that just isn't there on later recordings. The recording quality is more than satisfactory. The group's playing is smart and engaging with a skillful balance between technical skill and understated musicality. The playfulness brought to standards like Witchcraft is a welcome contrast to many of his later more brooding works. LaFaro and Motian provide their legendary support and interplay with their typcial flair. This was definitely a high point for Evans, before drugs, bad health and personal problems got in the way. No Evans collection would be complete without this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Expressive playing!.......2007-03-09

The artistic greatness of Bill Evans resides in his spelling treatment of the piano. He not only plays the keyboard; he plays with the instrument and certainly he would seem to establish with it a sort of spiritual connection making of it an extension this inner thoughts and moods.

That's why there have been so many versions about his compositions and however, just a few have been able to perform and express with such kind of feeling and inspiration the core of his compositions.

This is at least to my view, the main reason I recognize in him the essence of the genius. As Midas King all what he played it was pure gold.

5 out of 5 stars another evans album you should have........2007-02-10

bill evans is perhaps the most satisfying piano player to get into my ears. the lyrical beauty of his playing is magical for late nights spent reading and listening to music. "the village vanguard recordings" are my favorite bill evans, but this comes up a close second. buy with confidence if you love music steeped in beauty.

5 out of 5 stars a revelation.......2006-08-15

I thought I knew Evans' music pretty well, but this disc (which I, too, sought out after hearing Paul Motian recommend it in his "Fresh Air" interview) came as something of a revelation.

Rarely have I heard Evans play with so much energy. Some of his lines here even call to mind Bud Powell, who is not someone I would ordinarily associate with Evans. His whole approach on this disc - attack, development of ideas, use of dissonance - is more aggressive than on most of his other recordings.

This energy, though, doesn't come at the expense of lyricism. This CD has more than its share of heartbreakingly beautiful moments. Is there any ballad more affecting than (in Evans' hands) "When I Fall In Love"?

5 out of 5 stars Paul Motian's fave with Bill Evans.......2006-03-14

On NPR's Fresh Air, Motian said this was his favorite recording that he made with Bill Evans. Pretty good recommendation!

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

5 out of 5 stars Great to play for company or to listen critically to.......2005-08-09

Eddie sold me a copy of this disc at the Montreal Bistro in Toronto, a centre-of-the-universe jazz club, saying that it was his favourite of the ones he recorded. Good advice, because it can be played repeatedly for company, or critically. The variety of musical genres helps; Danny Boy is an excellent, unique, haunting rendering. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-01-11

This album is Higgins at his best (but then, when isn't he?), more than a little melancholy, and always with his unique take on both familiar and slightly less familiar melodies. He's simply one of the best jazz pianists around (and has excellent accompaniment). I've never been disappointed in any of his recordings, and this one is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars 35 unmistakable tracks.......2005-02-24

You don't need to buy the double-disc "Moondog 1 & 2" to hear the two albums - all that music can also be heard on this (75 minute) single disc.
Even though the only cover art of this edition is the original front cover of the 1969 "Moondog" (no original back-cover thereof nor any art from the 1971 "Moondog II",) all 35 tracks are nicely crammed in here.
What's listed under "Listen to samples" on the amazon page are only the last 20 tracks of this CD and all titles are linked to the wrong tracks.

"Moondog I" (tracks 1-9) opens with "Theme" and "Stomping Ground" - two somewhat coherent pieces which a few years ago were made quite famous through the soundtrack of Coen Brothers' wonderful movie "The Big Lebowski." The album features a 50+ piece orchestra, which, among other greats, includes jazz veterans Don Butterfield (tuba) and Ron Carter (double bass.) In the list of personnel, Moondog is not credited for playing percussion, but the bass, which I assume is a misprint.
The beautiful Charlie Parker homage "Lament I: Bird's Lament" is here performed in its original form, but can also be found on the 1994 Moondog recording "Sax Pax For a Sax" on only saxes and percussion.
The orchestral performances on "Moondog I" aren't flawless, but should not be judged harshly because of the very personal, highly individual, and wonderfully eccentric form of compositions that they are. Budget, which is a very common issue when it comes to orchestral recordings, is another element that probably has not allowed much rehersing or many (if any) re-takes.

Before ordering this disc I knew that I'd love "Moondog I" since I'd heard most of it previously, but I was skeptical towards "Moondog II" because of some reviews I'd read of it. I was however curious, and listening to it when it had arrived was a very nice surprise.
Aside from performances by Louis "Moondog" Hardin (percussion, piano, vocals) and his daughter June (vocals,) "Moondog II" features 6 other musicians who, at different points throughout the album, play virginals, recorders, harpsichords, ancient organs, guitars, schom, viola de gamba, and troubadour harp. These instruments alone make a very individual sound, but the compositions (many of which are in 5/4 and 5/8) and the poetry make this the most wonderful group of rounds (short vocal canons) you've ever heard.

In my 700+ CD collection, this is among my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-01-26

Beautiful, quirky, fascinating. A combination of classical, jazz, and improv, this collection made me close my eyes and just feel the music. Interspersed with several of Hardin's two-line poems as punctuation, the musical pieces are truly a wonder.

5 out of 5 stars The Different Drummer We Once Were.......2004-01-05

I bought this album because of a memory, but the music stands up remarkably well to a more objective listening.

It was my first trip to New York City, and my father approached the wildly-dressed, tall and intiimidating figure standing on the corner of 56th St. and 7th Ave. They conversed in Norwegian long enough for me to draw nearer and realize the stranger represented no threat. In fact, I left with a book of hs canons, which remains in my collection of piano literature to this day.

I met Moondog once again--serendipitously, on Milwaukee's Wisconsin Avenue one day in the seventies. I have no idea how he got there or how he left, but this time I wanted to protect him from the insensitive pedestrians swirling around us and threatening our shared moment.

Moondog's music is as singular as he is, and offers a glimpse into his creative spirit. It begins with an idea and a form, not with an emotion or sentiment. Each piece is simple and brief, but not simplistic or fragmentary. He avoids any form of dissonance, even seventh chords and "blue" notes (flatted thirds). Music, like life, he seems to be saying, can be a straightforward, delighting adventure, providing one cherishes the quest itself above its so-called object and maintains a focused attention on the wonders of the present moment.

My only slight disappointment with this recording is that the madrigals, sung by Moondog and his daughter, are subjected to some studio effects that make them sound more artificial and commercial than they deserve to be.

5 out of 5 stars For those who love the music.......2003-11-29

It is simple, it is clear, it is wonderful! I don`t know what style is this. Some people call it `jazz`, but second disc is strongly attached to european madrigal canons. I think, if we listen really good music, we never asked about styles. I heard familiar tunes from Tchaikovsky to Resident`s Duck Stab. You must have this if you`re music lover. If you`re musician (who plays music, dont `have a job`) you must have it too. Listen once or twise, if you don`t like it, simply put it on the shelf. Properly time will come.
P.S. My favorite `I love you` and `Nero`s Expedition`

5 out of 5 stars Moondog.......2002-05-16

I was in the St. Thomas Boys Choir in the early 70's. We would walk to church for rehearsal, and pass Moondog, standing on the corner, usually by the ABC building. A couple of us would talk to him in our free time...he knew our names by our voices. We would listen to his poetry, and he seemed intigued by our choir, although he never heard us, I think. I got his album around this time, and have had it ever since. Fascinating pieces, very intricate, but also with "a hook"...that you find yourself humming along with. I heard he moved to Germany, where he wrote a nine hour canon. Overall, an amazing life story, and an incredible talent.

4 out of 5 stars No need for CD layer!.......2005-01-13

This is a classic jazz masterpiece that requires no further compliments. I'm happy with the slight but recognizable improvement in the sound quality that SACD layer offers. Thanks to the lower background noise level (could be lower than what the original master tape contains, thanks to DSD remastering technology), the music contained in the SACD layer sounds deeper and more transparent.
For marketing purposes, I understand the merits of hybrid discs for newly recorded materials. But people who unmistakably buy this SACD (knowing this is a SACD disc) have a SACD player, plus CD and/or LP of the same title which they have played over and over with sheer admiration. Those with only CD players buy CDs, not SACD/CD hybrid discs for a lot more price. So what's the need for the CD layer whose sound quality does not match previously released JVC's K-2 or XRCD coded CDs. This holds true for all the classic masterpiece hybrid discs produced by Analogue Productions. Delete the CD layer and reduce the price.

This is a marvelous recording. I originally got it for the Borodin Tarantella (itself full of charm) but was even more delighted by the Schnittke "The Revisionist's Tale", particularly the third movement "The Portrait" with its not-quite-Shostakovich, not-quite-Prokofiev sound, quite unlike other Schnittke I've heard or played. Very nice, clear playing by the two performers, Natalia Zusman and Inna Heifetz. Would love to get the 2-piano score!

This disc is obviously intended for the collector who has nothing. It's an astonishing variety of bits and pieces, mostly movements from concertos. The performances range from excellent taste (mostly) to truly terrible (a ludicrous Gershwin arrangement), and the music is so diverse it's hard to imagine any listener who would like it all. But if the point is to give new listeners a chance to find out what kinds of flute music they do and don't like, then the disc makes a certain amount of sense. Sound quality varies only a little, which is surprising since the recordings come from such diverse sources. --Leslie Gerber
