Album Description

Excellent 2006 release that features the complete Ruby Braff Goes Girl Crazy on CD for the first time ever! The combination of Ruby Braff, an extraordinary trumpet player whose improvisational ability is matched only by his respect for a good melody, and George Gershwin, the acknowledged master of American popular song, is as natural as four and three on a pair of dice, and twice as nice if you also happen to like music. Ruby, who is almost single-handedly the reason why British Jazz publications invented the term 'mainstream' to describe traditionally-based modern playing, is a bug on the subject of melody and improvisation which refrains from distorting the composer's line. His enthusiasm for the score of George Gershwin's Girl Crazy pervades this entire album and is obviously shared by his cohorts: Al Cohn (tenor sax and clarinet), Hank Jones (piano), Jim Hall (guitar), Buzzy Drootin (drums) and bassists George Duvivier (who plays on But Not For Me, I Got Rhythm and Bidin' My Time) and Bob Haggart (who plays on the rest). Gambit.

5 out of 5 stars A real Braff bargain!.......2007-03-30

This CD of cornetist Ruby Braff and pianist Hank Jones recordings from 1958 and 1961 is a real gem, as is Gambit Records' other Braff CD featuring pianist Dave McKenna. Throw in sidemen Al Cohn, Jim Hall, Roy Eldridge, Mundell Lowe, Milt Hinton and Bob Haggart, and it's a jazz collector's dream. For the first time you'll have Braff's combined tunes from his "Girl Crazy," "You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me" and "Easy Now" LPs on one 75-minute CD you'll play over and over again.

    Album Description

Although Ruby Braff and Dave McKenna played together on several occasions during their long careers, these two sessions best represent their collective legacy for a number of reasons. It must be said that their recorded collaborations were not as abundant as one might expect. Their two initial sessions together were as sidemen for other musicians: a 1955 date as part of the Benny Goodman septet, and a February 1956 session backing singer Milli Vernon's recording debut. These dates were followed by the two incredible sessions included here. After that, the only known recordings of the Hackett-McKenna partnership are a 1961 live recording at Eddie Condon's with Bobby Hackett and Peanuts Hucko, and two 1991-93 double albums with a band including tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton. The sessions featured on this edition are, thus, their only true small group quartet/quintet) recordings and the only instrumental sessions they made at the peak of their careers, in which both musicians can be considered, in a way, session leaders. Gambit. 2006.

      5 out of 5 stars A jazz treasure following a national tragedy.......2007-06-14

Much of this splendid album was recorded on Sept. 12 and 13, 2001, immediately after terrorist attacks on New York City and the Pentagon. Yet cornetist Ruby Braff, pianist Bill Charlap and drummer Jake Hanna turned in memorable performances to go with three tunes recorded earlier during the session that produced Braff's "Watch What Happens" CD. For that date, Braff, Charlap and Hanna were joined by pianist Dick Hyman and guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli at Arbors' 2001 March of Jazz festival. Like Braff's 15 or so other releases on the Arbors label, "You Brought a New Kind of Love" is absolutely necessary for jazz fans who love a lyrical horn player's improvisations on familiar standards. If you've never heard any of Braff's work on Arbors, this is a good place to start. If you already own some of his other efforts, this CD will make a fine addition to your collection. It's one of the best CDs by Braff, who passed away in 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Tried and True.......2007-06-26

Ruby Braff and Ellis Larkins had met a few times before, most memorably back in the 1950's when recording for Vanguard records under the watchful eye of John Hammond. They met some twenty or so years later while recording the fine'Grand Reunion'session for Hank O'neal's independent Chiaroscuro label. The astute people at Arbors obviously knew a good thing when they heard it and decided to record a couple of volumes themselves while the going was still good.

The songs are all penned by Irving Berlin. Some are more familiar than others yet each one has a melody that can stay with you long after it's been played...especially the interpretations presented on this disc and its companion volume.

Ellis Larkins is the perfect and most complementary accompanist for Braff. He has a delicately fragile keyboard touch that is ideal for backing voices(the duets with Ella Fitzgerald on Decca come to mind). Braff's cornet playing has a smoothly eloquent vocal quality. His sound is immediately identifiable for its stark beauty and pure tone. Getting these guys together to play fifty years ago was a great idea and, judging by the results of this disc, time hasn't changed a thing.

Bucky Pizzarelli joins Braff and Larkins on a few numbers to add some variety. Mostly it's the graceful golden toned Braff playing Berlin's melodies rapturously with Larkins' gentle embellishments adding the finishing touches to the songs. Exquisite!

        Album Description

This release offers one of the best LPs recorded by this great mainstream jazz trumpeter and cornets Ruby Braff in the beginning of his fertile musical career, featuring Coleman Hawkins, Lawrence Brown, Ernie Caceres, Don Elliott, Nat Pierce, Freddie Green, Dave McKenna, Steve Jordan, and others. On these dates Braff exhibits commendable controlled power, even at moments of climax. Whatever the mood, in this kind of basically mainstream company his playing maintained an impressive sense of logicality and lyricism, as such as more than ample Proof of his innate ability to swing. Disconforme. 2005.

        5 out of 5 stars Creative Duets.......2003-07-04

The great Ruby Braff recorded cornet / piano duets with Ellis Larkins, Ralph Sutton, Roger Kellaway and Dick Hyman amongst others. For me, the recordings with Hyman are the finest, as Hyman is an enormously alert partner, constantly sparring with Braff and inspiring him to play at a consistently high level.

This 1994 CD has been criticised for lacking the variety of tempos and treatments of some of their other collaborations, and there is some truth in this. Virtually all the tracks are taken at medium tempo, and Hyman has no opportunity to play the full blooded stride that he excels in. Nevertheless, there is much to savour on this CD. The repertoire mixes jazz standards and obscurities from the American songbook to great effect. Braff, despite having been seriously ill shortly before the session, plays at his lyrical best and is full of invention. Hyman is magnificent throughout, and on tracks such as Cole Porter's "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" (with its mock-fugal solo) "Joseph Joseph" and "You're Lucky To Me", interacts superbly with Braff.

        Sound quality is excellent throughout.

This is one of those CDs that is delightful to listen to with half an ear to simply enjoy its melodious and swinging treatments, but also benefits from the closest possible attention to savour the rapport and interplay between the performers. Strongly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars A romantic jazz masterpiece.......2000-12-21

Talk about romantic jazz--this one's really got it. Every cut shows brilliant mastery of the songs by Braff and Hymen, a great pairing of cornet and piano. A couple of logs on the fire, alone at home, "Nice Tunes," and you'll soon be in heaven, lovers!

4 out of 5 stars Reviewing Live at the New School.......2006-03-26

This is a good CD especially if your a George Barnes fan. He demeonstrates some great interplay with Ruby Braff and Mr Braff's solos are lyrical and wonderful. This isn't my favorite of the George Barnes material that's out there however. If I had to choose one recording of George's that I came across on Amazon than that would have to be "Gems" with Joe Venuti. His playing sounds more lively than on this recording. That being said, the tune choices are great. I love thier versions of "There Will Never BE Another You', 'Sunny Side of Street', and 'Cheek to Cheek." If you play guitar like me then there are a lot of great licks to "cop" but if you only have enough bucks for one CD then get "Gems" instead.

5 out of 5 stars A hot jazz instrumental recording.......2003-07-04

This is a very sharp recording of some great jazz standards by Ruby Braff and George Barnes. They are both not as well known (and underrated) to many jazz fans, but their style is distinct, crisp, and very fun. Its like sitting in a jam session with some great musicians. These guys know their music and instruments well, and it comes through on this CD. If you really enjoy jazz guitar (a la Barney Kessel) this is the album for you.

5 out of 5 stars George knew how to swing.......2003-02-14

a total pleasure. masterful guitar work from a much underappreciated musician's musician. if you listen close enough you will enjoy this more and more.

5 out of 5 stars Two great musicians at the top of their form........2001-01-11

This is the best album by far that the Braff / Barnes quartet ever made, which is not to say that their other records are bad, they weren't, but this one is an absolute treasure, made better by including all the music recorded that night, unlike the original LP. Ruby Braff must be the best cornet player in jazz, and George Barnes amongst the best swing guitarists of his time. They play so wonderfully together that it is difficult to single out any tracks as being the best, but my favourite numbers are "There will never be another you","Solitude", "Rockin' in rhythm" ,"Struttin' with some barbecue", and "It don't mean a thing". But really the whole record is great, with the highest standards of musicianship from both the principals and Michael Moore and Wayne Wright on bass and rhythm guitar.Interestingly, the lack of a drummer doesn't stop the group swinging like crazy! The recording is excellent too,it does a great job in capturing the beautiful tone that both Ruby and George coax from their instruments. This is the most enjoyable jazz album I bought during 2000, and in my opinion the Braff/Barnes quartet was one of the outstanding groups of the seventies. In conclusion, buy it! Anyone with an appreciation for good music making cannot fail to be inspired and uplifted by this tasteful, humourous and sublime recording.
