Back in the day, Screamin' Jay Hawkins put the show in show business. His voodoo-inspired stage act included fireworks, flash powder, snakes, shrunken heads, and his faithful companion, a skull named Henry. To start his concerts, he was carried on in a coffin, from which he leaped, as if risen from the dead, often sending a good portion of his audience scampering for the exits. All of that sounds quaint by current standards, but at the time it was as controversial--perhaps more so--than Marilyn Manson is today. So was Screamin' Jay's music, which was marked with wild, wordless exhortations and orgasmic screams. "Voodoo Jive" contains Hawkins's best cuts, including the essential "I Put a Spell on You" plus "Little Demon," "Frenzy," "Alligator Wine," and "Person to Person," among others. In the grand scheme of things, Hawkins's schtick made him a legend, but in the short run, he was limited by what some saw as a mere novelty act. Still, he recorded some fine, honking R&B and proto-rock & roll that still sounds great (and completely out of control). The closing cut here, "Constipation Blues," is not for the faint of heart, but then neither is anything else Hawkins ever recorded. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

Nice, freakish, BUT.......2007-03-13
Besides that you can better use the CD for frisbee :-), nevertheless he created a whole genre of say weirdness in music...
The price is a drawback, i would say that 10-12 USD are fair.

Screamin' Jay Hawkins is best known for leaping out of a coffin to begin his '50s stage show and for "I Put a Spell on You," an R&B plaint transformed into an excessive masterwork by (it's said) a case of wine that appeared at the session. This definitive collection of Hawkins's work for the OKeh label includes the unedited version of "Spell" along with other one-of-a-kind effusions such as "Little Demon," "Yellow Coat," and his attacks on the likes of "You Made Me Love You," "Temptation," and "Take Me Back to My Boots and Saddle." Truly an artist who stands for something. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Yet, who was an inconsistent recording artist? Same answer. I prefer "Cow Fingers and Mosquito Pie" over "VooDoo Jive" The best of..." but either album will do if you only own one Sreamin Jay record. Yes, the classic "I put a spell on you" is here, and for a hilarious contrast play it back to back with Brian Ferry's version. But this album also offers "Frenzy" "Little Demon" and "Alligator Wine." Invite over that crazy tang, light the votive candles, get out the MD 20/20, and put this record on for some freaky circus action.
This one is a real screamer !!.......2004-09-22

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Screamin' and Hollerin' the Blues: The Worlds of Charley Patton is the musical equivalent of a limited-edition, fine-press book, and it's easily one of the most beautiful collections of recorded music ever assembled. Exquisitely designed, this 78-album-inspired, seven-CD package contains a wealth of information and music, featuring not only the Delta blues pioneer's complete recorded works, but the music of peripheral players (including Son House, Howlin' Wolf, and Henry "Son" Sims), a disc of fascinating audio interviews with Patton associates, and hours of reading material on the enigmatic songster. It's hard not to romanticize the music contained within this set as you open its retro-looking slipcase, but Patton (1887-1934) doesn't let you down. Under the haze of 78 rpm record hiss, his 50-odd preserved recordings spellbind with great guitar playing and moving lyrics about love, loss, and catastrophes. Who cares if his life lacked the mystique of Robert Johnson, or his low, growling voice wasn't the creepy falsetto of Skip James? Patton's repertoire was unparalleled; his guitar playing--punctuated by striking syncopated, percussive beats--is always in tune and precise; and his slide playing is full subtle whines and flourishes. These remastered tracks sound better than ever, but there's still plenty of hiss (for some tunes, just one abused and poorly pressed record has survived). Copious, scholarly (and, at times, a little arcane) liner notes debate and survey Patton's mysterious life and tunes; the complete lyrics to his songs are included, too--no small feat. But it's the music--utterly raw, striking, and influential blues--that steals the show here.
Revenant Records has outdone itself--this is a poignant dream project that label cofounder/guitar great John Fahey didn't live long enough to see completed--and it's well worth every penny. Only a handful of musical artists deserve this lavish a treatment; as evidenced here, Patton--the first great Delta blues musician on record--is certainly one of them. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, but for hardcore obsessives only..........2005-04-01
The JSP definetly has more noise reduction, which can be a plus to newbies,(but I prefer the more original sound of the recordings, no matter what. They are history after all.) That said, you get a copy of Fahey's long out of print book,( Which goes for more then $200) plus an amazing packaging by Revenant. There is much material hear to study.
Best. Album. EVER........2003-11-09
There are three points that I would make to a potential purchaser that may not be totally obvious:
1. These recordings sound really, really good for those on the old Paramount label - where the recordings were done poorly, no metal parts exist, and all extant CDs are dubbed from 78 RPM shellac pressings, some of which are in pretty bad shape (at one point the only existing copy of Willie Brown's "Future Blues" was broken in half!). I have not heard JSP's Patton boxed set, which would seem to be a great substitute at $25 for somebody who does not want to pay $150. However, I do have JSP's "Legends of the Country Blues," which has the 1930 Son House Paramount recordings that are on disc 4 of this set. This sounds much better. The JSP sounds more No-Noised to me, while this sounds more alive on the high end. I say that as someone who has bought a lot of the JSP sets, and who would have no hesitation recommending their work generally.
2. This is not 7 CDs of just Charley Patton. This is a really good introduction to pre-Robert Johnson Delta blues. You get all the Paramount recordings of Son House, Willie Brown and Louise Johnson, two of whom were seminal figures, and the last of whom was just fun. (Somebody ought to make a movie about the roadtrip Patton, House, Brown and Johnson took to Wisconsin to record these tracks. They could get Charles Dutton to play the guy from the Delta Big Four who drove them.) You get a CD of some pretty essential stuff by various artists, including Tommy Johnson. You get the Delta Big Four, Son Sims and some others. You get a CD of interviews.
3. It's bittersweet to say, but this set may get overtaken by future discoveries. It's criminally ironic that a full-body, first-generation photo of Charley Patton finally surfaced a year after this box came out. Also, it's known that there are other Patton recordings for which 78s have yet to be found; they may turn up if they haven't already.
You KNOW you want to buy it. Don't you?
big set big price.......2003-05-15
it is, as mentioned, like a fine rare book-and the essential music (the first 5 cds ) are available ... in the Complete Works of Charley Patton (the five cd set in a slip case-limited liner notes) also listed here, and affordable for 'us bluesmen'.
I am writing this to let all know that, aside from two additional cds, one containing interviews by others about Patton, and one of other artists who performed his work (thus the "worlds of CP" ), and some very cool posters and stickers and lovely packaging and other toys and eye candy, the essence is available for a fraction of the cost-same stuff from "masked marvel productions" the orignator of this lovely tome -made in the UK. Unless you really love CP and will listen to this lots, I recommend the [shorter] set-it is still the stirring blues of this great, complete.
Charlie Patton Delta Bluesman.......2002-09-07
Great Guy, Dumb Packaging.......2002-08-22
Waste of materials, waste of space, lack of imagination. The worlds of Charley Patton? How many worlds did the guy have?
Patton's music is the antithesis of this gauche overkill.

More Blues and Truth from one of the best........2007-03-09
On at least three occasions--the date preceding this one and the classic "Blues and the Abstract Truth"--Oliver was insistent on including the controversial, avant garde player, Eric Dolphy. For the most part, it was a good call on Oliver's part. On the opening, title track, Dolphy's squawking, talking bass clarinet sounds oddly out of place, but on the remaining tracks, all featuring Dolphy's alto saxophone, the exchanges are spirited and, despite the contrast or because of it, illuminating. Spurred by Dolphy's range-busting top tones and virtuosic technique and harmonic complexity, Nelson's consummate command is all the more impressive. No player employs tension and release more effectively than Oliver Nelson (check out, especially, his Perdido solo on "Soul Battle" and his solo on the title tune of "Mainstem"), who eschews scales and "running the changes" in favor of daring and bold statements, often reaching thrilling climaxes and triumphant resolutions.
With these musicians (including the underrated trumpeter Richard Williams), feeling blue is occasion for celebrating.

Bop til you drop!.......2005-12-07
Many musical styles are covered here: swing, big band, boogie, bebop, R&B and more.
There's a huge selection of songs and artists and every track is great!
The accompanying booklet is loaded with facts about the music and the musicians.
The sound quality of this set is excellent.
Proper has come up with yet another value-packed box set!
It was Rock & Roll before it was called Rock & Roll.......2004-08-21
I won't review all of the song selections, because there are a ton, but I will say that every song in this set is worth every penny.
At the time of these recordings (1942-1952) this music was commonly called "Jump Blues". It was the forerunner to Rock and Roll. Unlike early R & R music that highlighted white musicians and the guitar, Jump Blues highlighted black musicians and the saxophone (mostly tenor). This was not commonly played in mainstream America, although many of the musicians such as, Illinois Jacquet, were getting some notoriety on the jazz scene.
This was perceived as "devil's" music and white radio, for the most part, wouldn't touch it. Remember, this is almost 15 years before Bill Haley, Alan Freed or Elvis Presley. However, many white musicians would later record these songs and make a commercial success out of them.
I would recommend this box set to young and old alike. Along with the fantastic selection of songs, it comes with an outstanding booklet talking about the music and the artists. This music stills packs the same punch it did over 50 years ago. Take a listen!!!!!

This is the archetypical bluesy record!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the one to start with Screamin' Jay Hawkins.......2005-09-25
Screamin' Jay is a scream............2005-01-23
Most people know him for one of his greatest hits, "I Put a Spell On You." This tune about obsessive love is really like no other song I have ever heard. Screamin' Jay does it best, of course (though, it was remade by the wonderful Nina Simone, as well as other artists). His nickname was, no doubt, a true indication of his style. This man alternates wailing, crooning, and screaming with true singing talent. He alternates feelings of torture with feelings of satisfaction (and, sometimes, it is hard to decide which emotion he is truly trying to convey--maybe both?).
This album is a combination of Jay's original works ("I Put a Spell on You," "Hong Kong," and "Yellow Coat"), and old standards ("I Love Paris," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Ol' Man River," "If You are But a Dream," and "You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want to Do It)"). The combination of scatting, unusual interpretaion and hilarious ad-libbing is truly delivered in a way I have never heard before. Jay definitely has the mojo and the juice to carry this wonderful album. You just have to hear it to believe it.
And what a spell that is.............2000-03-22
