Back in the day, Screamin' Jay Hawkins put the show in show business. His voodoo-inspired stage act included fireworks, flash powder, snakes, shrunken heads, and his faithful companion, a skull named Henry. To start his concerts, he was carried on in a coffin, from which he leaped, as if risen from the dead, often sending a good portion of his audience scampering for the exits. All of that sounds quaint by current standards, but at the time it was as controversial--perhaps more so--than Marilyn Manson is today. So was Screamin' Jay's music, which was marked with wild, wordless exhortations and orgasmic screams. "Voodoo Jive" contains Hawkins's best cuts, including the essential "I Put a Spell on You" plus "Little Demon," "Frenzy," "Alligator Wine," and "Person to Person," among others. In the grand scheme of things, Hawkins's schtick made him a legend, but in the short run, he was limited by what some saw as a mere novelty act. Still, he recorded some fine, honking R&B and proto-rock & roll that still sounds great (and completely out of control). The closing cut here, "Constipation Blues," is not for the faint of heart, but then neither is anything else Hawkins ever recorded. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-03-28

absolutly great cd, if you like Screamin' Jay Hawkins you'll like it very much, and also the prize.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, freakish, BUT.......2007-03-13

Let's be honest, Jay was a freak, so if you have your "5 Minutes" and you need such kind of music, this is it!
Besides that you can better use the CD for frisbee :-), nevertheless he created a whole genre of say weirdness in music...

The price is a drawback, i would say that 10-12 USD are fair.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential.......2007-01-16

You know nothing about blues until you have discovered Screamin Jay Hawkins. The kind of character that is missing these days. A great cultural moment for anyone capable of reading between the lines.

3 out of 5 stars Less than impressed.......2006-09-15

I bought this album for the song "I Put A Spell on You." Unfortunatley it is not the version of the song I wanted. It's a good version, but I wanted the one with all the vocal sound effects that got it banned. I heard it on a jukebox in a bar where it is a crowd favorite, so I know that version is available somewhere. Well then, the rest of the album. There are some interesting songs here, but if this is the best of Mr. Hawkins, then ummmm, he wasn't the best in the world. I could see myself playing a few of the songs as rare treats, but listening to the album all the way thru is not something I can't wait to do. I'm sure his stage act was great and ahead of its time, but unless you're a real Hawkins fan this album might dissappoint you. Buy it when the price goes down.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked and insane!.......2006-08-28

Buy 50 copies and give them to your friends (and if you don't have that many firends, give them to anyone who walks by). This is mandatory listening for anyone who listens to any kind of music. Amen.

Screamin' Jay Hawkins is best known for leaping out of a coffin to begin his '50s stage show and for "I Put a Spell on You," an R&B plaint transformed into an excessive masterwork by (it's said) a case of wine that appeared at the session. This definitive collection of Hawkins's work for the OKeh label includes the unedited version of "Spell" along with other one-of-a-kind effusions such as "Little Demon," "Yellow Coat," and his attacks on the likes of "You Made Me Love You," "Temptation," and "Take Me Back to My Boots and Saddle." Truly an artist who stands for something. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Theatrical, over the top, awesome.......2007-04-04

This disc is a great investment if you love blues. Screamin' Jay is an excellent singer, and the songs on the CD are a lot of fun to listen to. It will definitely lift you up if you're in a foul mood because the songs are so funny and theatrical. I highly recommend you purchase this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Priceless........2006-12-05

I echo the sentiments of other reviewers - if you're gonna buy a Screamin Jay CD, this is the one to get. For my money, the best part of this CD is the alternate take of "Alligator Wine" at the very end of the CD - if you listen very closely at the end of the track, while Jay is going absolutely bonkers even by his standards and appears to sound injured, there is a voice that breaks in on the studio monitor and says something like "Are you ok?". THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is art in its highest sense.

4 out of 5 stars HOLD ON TO YOUR SANITY.......2006-07-16

.........'CAUSE HERE COMES SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS, TRULY A MAN AMONG MAN. YOU COULD SAY THAT SCREAMIN JAY WAS THE TYPE OF GUY WHO WOULD WALK INTO A ROOM AND BE THE CENTER OF ATTENTION! HE PUT ON ONE OF THE BEST LIVE SHOWS EVER, A MANIACAL MUSICAL MENAGERIE OF MADNESS. HE USED TO OPEN UP HIS SHOW COMING OUT OF A COFFIN! THIS IS A GUY WHO IS RUMORED TO HAVE FATHERED 78 CHILDREN! IF YOU WANT TO HEAR SOMETHING DIFFERENT, BY NO MEANS SUBTLE OR MELLOW, THEN YOU HAVE GOT TO LISTEN TO THIS CD! SCREAMIN JAY HAWKINS IS MY HERO!!!! WHAT A GUY!

5 out of 5 stars Invite that freak over and get nasty.......2005-10-17

Where did Lux Interior's singing style come from? Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Where did shock rock theatrics come from? Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Where did the stripped down let-it-rip Dionysian production values of Jim Dickinson come from? Screamin Jay Hawkins.

Yet, who was an inconsistent recording artist? Same answer. I prefer "Cow Fingers and Mosquito Pie" over "VooDoo Jive" The best of..." but either album will do if you only own one Sreamin Jay record. Yes, the classic "I put a spell on you" is here, and for a hilarious contrast play it back to back with Brian Ferry's version. But this album also offers "Frenzy" "Little Demon" and "Alligator Wine." Invite over that crazy tang, light the votive candles, get out the MD 20/20, and put this record on for some freaky circus action.

5 out of 5 stars This one is a real screamer !!.......2004-09-22

Screaming Jay Hawkins is an artist with a soul and passion for rock& roll, soul, blues, and jazzy rythm, you name it. As an introduction to Screaming Jay Hawkins, this album has it all. Little Demon is a grand opener which just put you into it, and never slips it grip, trough the album. It also put the unedited version of I put a spell on you in. You begin beliving in woodoo after listnening through this CD. The voice with all its growling and mumbling,is as scary and joyfull as ever. Forget the rather tame version from Creedence Clearwater Revival and other artists( to be fair John Fogerty sings quite well on it, but the woodoo hoodoo voice missing, and Jay Hawkins groaning is not included on that version). Little Demon and I put a spell on you are repeated with to nearly similiar versions, but its one of my to favourites tracks on the album. To understand classical rock & roll, when it was raw, unpredictable, and full of pasion and soul, few do it better than Screamin`Jay Hawkins. This one is a real screamer !!

5 out of 5 stars The forgotten building block of today's music.......2002-02-05

In the past 60 years some famous artists and less famous artists have contributed in the sounds that we hear today. I consider this one of them. I bought this album some years ago on LP. When I left the store, some guy praised my choice "Good choice". Little did I know what to expect, I only knew "I put a spell..". I was blown away by this album immediately. The creation of new words that just sounded right, but absolutely weren't in any dictionary, such as Aligator Wine, and phrases that were starteling your ears just make this a very enjoyable album. As soon as I heard this became available on CD, I bought it. Jay has got me under a spell you know..... Watch out.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Screamin' and Hollerin' the Blues: The Worlds of Charley Patton is the musical equivalent of a limited-edition, fine-press book, and it's easily one of the most beautiful collections of recorded music ever assembled. Exquisitely designed, this 78-album-inspired, seven-CD package contains a wealth of information and music, featuring not only the Delta blues pioneer's complete recorded works, but the music of peripheral players (including Son House, Howlin' Wolf, and Henry "Son" Sims), a disc of fascinating audio interviews with Patton associates, and hours of reading material on the enigmatic songster.

It's hard not to romanticize the music contained within this set as you open its retro-looking slipcase, but Patton (1887-1934) doesn't let you down. Under the haze of 78 rpm record hiss, his 50-odd preserved recordings spellbind with great guitar playing and moving lyrics about love, loss, and catastrophes. Who cares if his life lacked the mystique of Robert Johnson, or his low, growling voice wasn't the creepy falsetto of Skip James? Patton's repertoire was unparalleled; his guitar playing--punctuated by striking syncopated, percussive beats--is always in tune and precise; and his slide playing is full subtle whines and flourishes. These remastered tracks sound better than ever, but there's still plenty of hiss (for some tunes, just one abused and poorly pressed record has survived). Copious, scholarly (and, at times, a little arcane) liner notes debate and survey Patton's mysterious life and tunes; the complete lyrics to his songs are included, too--no small feat. But it's the music--utterly raw, striking, and influential blues--that steals the show here.

Revenant Records has outdone itself--this is a poignant dream project that label cofounder/guitar great John Fahey didn't live long enough to see completed--and it's well worth every penny. Only a handful of musical artists deserve this lavish a treatment; as evidenced here, Patton--the first great Delta blues musician on record--is certainly one of them. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but for hardcore obsessives only..........2005-04-01

I love this set, but for the price, I think it's more for those who, like me, fell off into the deep end. For the money, I would recommend the JSP set, it's $25 and has all of Patton's recordings.
The JSP definetly has more noise reduction, which can be a plus to newbies,(but I prefer the more original sound of the recordings, no matter what. They are history after all.) That said, you get a copy of Fahey's long out of print book,( Which goes for more then $200) plus an amazing packaging by Revenant. There is much material hear to study.

5 out of 5 stars Best. Album. EVER........2003-11-09

This is the musical equivalent of a family Bible. You will pass it down from children to grandchildren. It cannot be likened to any other boxed set I have ever seen - not even the lavish and fantastic Bear Family country and rockabilly sets from Germany. The Folkways reissue of the Anthology of American Folk Music comes close in look and feel, but it's still 100 miles behind.

There are three points that I would make to a potential purchaser that may not be totally obvious:

1. These recordings sound really, really good for those on the old Paramount label - where the recordings were done poorly, no metal parts exist, and all extant CDs are dubbed from 78 RPM shellac pressings, some of which are in pretty bad shape (at one point the only existing copy of Willie Brown's "Future Blues" was broken in half!). I have not heard JSP's Patton boxed set, which would seem to be a great substitute at $25 for somebody who does not want to pay $150. However, I do have JSP's "Legends of the Country Blues," which has the 1930 Son House Paramount recordings that are on disc 4 of this set. This sounds much better. The JSP sounds more No-Noised to me, while this sounds more alive on the high end. I say that as someone who has bought a lot of the JSP sets, and who would have no hesitation recommending their work generally.

2. This is not 7 CDs of just Charley Patton. This is a really good introduction to pre-Robert Johnson Delta blues. You get all the Paramount recordings of Son House, Willie Brown and Louise Johnson, two of whom were seminal figures, and the last of whom was just fun. (Somebody ought to make a movie about the roadtrip Patton, House, Brown and Johnson took to Wisconsin to record these tracks. They could get Charles Dutton to play the guy from the Delta Big Four who drove them.) You get a CD of some pretty essential stuff by various artists, including Tommy Johnson. You get the Delta Big Four, Son Sims and some others. You get a CD of interviews.

3. It's bittersweet to say, but this set may get overtaken by future discoveries. It's criminally ironic that a full-body, first-generation photo of Charley Patton finally surfaced a year after this box came out. Also, it's known that there are other Patton recordings for which 78s have yet to be found; they may turn up if they haven't already.

You KNOW you want to buy it. Don't you?

4 out of 5 stars big set big price.......2003-05-15

The previous reviews make some valid points about this stunning box set-it is really special, and like thing that are incremntally finer, it is geometrically more [money]- and i take my blues pretty seriously...
it is, as mentioned, like a fine rare book-and the essential music (the first 5 cds ) are available ... in the Complete Works of Charley Patton (the five cd set in a slip case-limited liner notes) also listed here, and affordable for 'us bluesmen'.

I am writing this to let all know that, aside from two additional cds, one containing interviews by others about Patton, and one of other artists who performed his work (thus the "worlds of CP" ), and some very cool posters and stickers and lovely packaging and other toys and eye candy, the essence is available for a fraction of the cost-same stuff from "masked marvel productions" the orignator of this lovely tome -made in the UK. Unless you really love CP and will listen to this lots, I recommend the [shorter] set-it is still the stirring blues of this great, complete.

4 out of 5 stars Charlie Patton Delta Bluesman.......2002-09-07

From the reviews I know this is worth the money there is allot of rare stuff on here especially the Willie Brown song "Pallet on the Floor" this is my main reason for wanting to get this box set so bad. This is the only place you can get that Willie Brown song according to Yazoo2002 "Masters of the Delta Blues, Friends of Charlie Patton" he only recorded two songs in his life time "M&O blues" and "Jinx Blues" one of the most awesome Delta blues songs I have heard (Jinx Blues). Oh yeah one more thing I would have given this 5 stars but where in the world is the Ishmon Bracey recording I mean he was one of Charlie Patton's worlds also (lol) wasn't he not to mention one of the best Delta Bluesmen to strum a guitar it just seems incomplete to have Kid Bailey, Son House, Willie Brown, Tommy Johnson, Bertha Lee and no Ishmon Bracey .... The poor guy is probally squirming in his grave right now leaving him out like that yall otta be ashamed of yourselves (Yazoo would have never done a thing like that). Just for that I'm giving this 3.5 stars now (but I'm still gonna save the money to buy this) p.s how in the hell is a Bluesman suppose to afford this boxset....

1 out of 5 stars Great Guy, Dumb Packaging.......2002-08-22

Of all the trite marketing gimmicks, this is one of the silliest. CDs in a 78? Give me a break! This is what John Fahey wanted?

Waste of materials, waste of space, lack of imagination. The worlds of Charley Patton? How many worlds did the guy have?

Patton's music is the antithesis of this gauche overkill.

4 out of 5 stars More Blues and Truth from one of the best........2007-03-09

Oliver's talents as an arranger-composer were so much in demand that unfortunately he was not recorded nearly enough as a performer. On both the alto and tenor saxophones he's a force to contend wiith, a definitive, majestic improviser who plays without the least doubt, hesistancy or tentativeness: each extemporized solo is practically a finished composition. His only rival, in that regard, is Dexter Gordon.

On at least three occasions--the date preceding this one and the classic "Blues and the Abstract Truth"--Oliver was insistent on including the controversial, avant garde player, Eric Dolphy. For the most part, it was a good call on Oliver's part. On the opening, title track, Dolphy's squawking, talking bass clarinet sounds oddly out of place, but on the remaining tracks, all featuring Dolphy's alto saxophone, the exchanges are spirited and, despite the contrast or because of it, illuminating. Spurred by Dolphy's range-busting top tones and virtuosic technique and harmonic complexity, Nelson's consummate command is all the more impressive. No player employs tension and release more effectively than Oliver Nelson (check out, especially, his Perdido solo on "Soul Battle" and his solo on the title tune of "Mainstem"), who eschews scales and "running the changes" in favor of daring and bold statements, often reaching thrilling climaxes and triumphant resolutions.

With these musicians (including the underrated trumpeter Richard Williams), feeling blue is occasion for celebrating.

5 out of 5 stars It was Rock & Roll before it was called Rock & Roll.......2004-08-21

WOW....where to begin!!!!! This four CD collection is a must have for anyone who likes their music loud and pounding fast. You cannot get a better deal on both the quality and quantity that this set provides.

I won't review all of the song selections, because there are a ton, but I will say that every song in this set is worth every penny.

At the time of these recordings (1942-1952) this music was commonly called "Jump Blues". It was the forerunner to Rock and Roll. Unlike early R & R music that highlighted white musicians and the guitar, Jump Blues highlighted black musicians and the saxophone (mostly tenor). This was not commonly played in mainstream America, although many of the musicians such as, Illinois Jacquet, were getting some notoriety on the jazz scene.

This was perceived as "devil's" music and white radio, for the most part, wouldn't touch it. Remember, this is almost 15 years before Bill Haley, Alan Freed or Elvis Presley. However, many white musicians would later record these songs and make a commercial success out of them.

I would recommend this box set to young and old alike. Along with the fantastic selection of songs, it comes with an outstanding booklet talking about the music and the artists. This music stills packs the same punch it did over 50 years ago. Take a listen!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Blues, New Orleans Style!.......2002-08-16

This is Omar's 2000 release on the Provogue label. The label includes and features such blues/rock artist as Walter Trout, Jay Hooks, Michel Katon and Carl Verheyen. Shortly after releasing this CD, Omar left and joined Blind Pig. "Screamin' Cat" is a swampy New Orleans blues/rock mix much in the style of the band Iko-Iko. On this particular release, Omar is joined by Papa Mali (CD "Thunder Chicken") and Papa's drummer Barry "Frosty" Smith, who add that critical bayou beat to the mix. Mali contributes on the slide guitar, dobro and baritone guitars, as well as theB-3 organ, while Frosty weighs in on the drums, percussion, B-3 organ and key bass. Omar's vocals on this release are a bit gravely and very similar to Dr. John's. All of the tunes are upbeat and full of energy. From a musical and technical perspective, there is not a bad track on the disc. However, I suspect that whether or not an individual likes this recording will rest largely upon your preference for vocal styles.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Swamp-Rock.......2001-03-06

If you like blues/rock with a "swampy" feel, this is a tough one to beat. Omar & the Howlers do this stuff better than almost anyone out there. I think this CD's a little less blues-oriented and a little more rock-oriented than some of his previous stuff. Still think Omar's voice is one of the most unique out there. If you have a chance to see them in person, do it. Great show!

    5 out of 5 stars Screamer and a Shouter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-09

This is THE song, not the whitebread edition, but powerful, raw, bluesy
    singing at it's best.

When Screamin' Jay sings ballads, he's got a powerfully good voice, not a
tiny one, but robust and rounded.

This is the archetypical bluesy record!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars the one to start with Screamin' Jay Hawkins.......2005-09-25

First of all, I would like to notice that it's the reissue of his first album "at home with S.J.H." (originally issued on Epic in 1958) with a different order in the titles and a different cover. Secondly, I think it's the album of reference of his long and heratic carreer. Personally, I was so blowed when I first heard his powerful voice able to sing blues, easy listening or rock. A true artist of music hall in a sense that he is a true character.

5 out of 5 stars Screamin' Jay is a scream............2005-01-23

I don't know where to begin with this album. You could say so much about this guy. For starters, Screamin' Jay was more like three men packed into one. He was a prize fighter, a singer/songwriter and aspiring opera singer. He was also campy, wonderfully eccentric and irresistably soulful.

Most people know him for one of his greatest hits, "I Put a Spell On You." This tune about obsessive love is really like no other song I have ever heard. Screamin' Jay does it best, of course (though, it was remade by the wonderful Nina Simone, as well as other artists). His nickname was, no doubt, a true indication of his style. This man alternates wailing, crooning, and screaming with true singing talent. He alternates feelings of torture with feelings of satisfaction (and, sometimes, it is hard to decide which emotion he is truly trying to convey--maybe both?).

This album is a combination of Jay's original works ("I Put a Spell on You," "Hong Kong," and "Yellow Coat"), and old standards ("I Love Paris," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Ol' Man River," "If You are But a Dream," and "You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want to Do It)"). The combination of scatting, unusual interpretaion and hilarious ad-libbing is truly delivered in a way I have never heard before. Jay definitely has the mojo and the juice to carry this wonderful album. You just have to hear it to believe it.

5 out of 5 stars And what a spell that is.............2000-03-22

Screaming Jay Hawkins "I Put A Spell On You" is one of the definitive albums of the bizarre 1960's. This music is as unique as Frank Zappa, in it's own right. The strange delivery of Screaming Jay works wonders with the orchestral sound of the band on songs like Orange Color Sky, and his jibberish yip yapping on Hong Kong are not only hysterical, but funky as well. The way he could include Swing Low Sweet Chariot on this album is beyond anyone's belief. This is one of the great albums of all time- either you will love it or hate it, but you will by no means ever forget it.

CD2 is the reunion of the 2 LP's recorded for Philips: "...what that is!" (1969, 1-12) & "is in your mind" (1970, 13-24). Beware: the 2 CDs are reversed when you listen it with WMPlayer. I think it was a second peak of his long but heratic carreer: a miss for the history of blues and rock'n'roll in general. Enjoy his powerful & blowin' voice, anyway.
