Being a tuba player myself, I can truly appreciate the abilities of Mr. Pilafian. I have had the rare opportunity to study with him as well, and I know that he loves his music, and it shows in all that he plays. He plays with more heart and more technical ability than anyone else out there. As long as he keeps making albums I will keep buying them.

With excellent guitar work and percussion from heaven, Sam Pilafian's solo debut shows the full range of what a tuba can do. Mr. Pilafian is a founding member of the well known Empire Brass. His roots in classical music are well grounded. I encourage anyone looking for traditional jazz arranged in a fresh way to buy this disc!

The best of the young Horn.......2004-09-10

What's better than Shirley Horn? Two Shirley Horn's. I know of no other major vocalist who so clearly has two different periods which translate into two completely different personas. On this disk you get a sassy, swinging and young cross between Dinah Washington and Peggy Lee. It is my favorite early period Horn and one of my three all time favorite Horn's. You will like it a lot!

If you like Diane Krall, you will also like this CD.......2003-01-19

It is very easy to be seduced by this music. The voice is rich and expressive, the phrasing is intellegent and witty, the piano is like another voice and the back-ups adds just the right dimension. Although it is easy to listen to, it is not by any means "easy listening." The artest is one of the most origional and has been copied by many current aspiring female singers. Some, such as Diane Krall, give her credit for being a major influance. If you are a Krall fan you will recognize that infulance immediatly.
One of Shirley's hallmarks is the moods she is able to evoke. Both "Sunday in New York" and "Big City" are so evacative of NYC that either one could be the theme song for that city. "You're Blase" is a perfect portrait of the bored and world-weary, sung by someone who obviously has the oppisite point of view. There is a witty humor here also - in songs like "Confession" and "Yes, I Know When I've Had It." If you like the blues you will love "Some of my best friends are the Blues". In Shirley's later recordings her voice has deteriated, although she lost none of her musical and power. I enjoy her later recordings, but here, her voice is fresh, and she has an optimism mixed with shophistocation which is very appealing. The only downside to this recording is that the cuts are fairly short by today's standards. Short though they may be, each is a gem to be enjoyed and heard over and over again.

Shirley Horn has a great voice and plays piano like a boogie woogie angel. This work apparently failed commercially as it was not jazz and not pop. I believe that Miss Horn created a new crossover genre way ahead of her time. The reluctant beat of the Beatles cover, And I Love Him is so modern and hip hop, you just want to send a copy to Missy Elliot to sample. Sunday in New York has become my post 911 anthem, it is so much about what New York can be if you think clearly about this big city. This is not the Shirley Horn of now. No lush strings and mellow dramatic ballads. Just a swinging smart set of good songs.

Great mood, great arrangements, and the great voice of Shirley Horn. The version of And I Love Him has the most incredible hip hop beat. It sounds so fresh. Thank god that this work is available once again. Travelin' Light is a classic.

Quiet Brilliance.......1999-12-01

I feel I must confess--it has taken me years to become a devoted fan of Shirley Horn (a fact that embarrasses me now, but the same once held true for me with Sarah Vaughan as well). But this Impulse label recording from 1965 shows the breathy and quiet brilliance of voacalist and pianist Shirley Horn. (If one is looking for name dropping on this recording, I might mention Kenny Burrell on guitar.) The first song, a Johnny Mercer number, lends the recording its title: This is without a doubt the best version of "Travelin' Light" I've ever heard; I'm sure a few Billie Holiday fans out there won't like this fact, but that's too bad. The ballad, "You're Blase," is marvelous. And although I'm not a Lennon-McCartney fan, Horn does a very good job on the last track, "And I Love Him." A few of these numbers swing (not like Ella, but swinging nonetheless); they are "Sunday in New York" and "Big City." One can certainly hear on this recording the effect Horn has had on the younger, less sophisticated, and less mature Diana Krall (who is admittedly a Horn fan). But Krall does not have Horn's maturity or jazz presence (if you've ever seen Krall in concert, you'll understand--she plays with her stringy hair too much). I like this Horn better than the Horn on "Here's to Life" The theme here is one of a quiet and sophisticated mood.

You gotta love these 2 guys who expertly play all your Christmas favorites. Tuba and banjo usually make strange bedfellows, but in the hands of Travelin' Light, it's all good. Recommended for jazz fans especially, as these 2 guys are virtuosos on their respective instruments. This record puts a smile on my face every time I play it.

this cd is played more than any other around the holidays in my household.the kids just love it and i am also fond of it.so much so that this is the second time i am buying it.this cd is so much more than a banjo and a tuba as it seems to suggest.the jazz/swing here is highly enjoyable.the second the kids hit play they are dancing and twirling around the room.one of my favorite songs is the 12 days of christmas,very cute,ending in a new orleans swing crescendo?.

When I ordered this album, I didn't know it was a short course in improvisation. Sam and Dave provide everything you need to begin learning to improvise on your instrument. The lessons are clear and of course, the music they laid down to work with is exactly what you need to improve your improv.

I was recently hanging out in record store that lets you listen before you buy. I'll usually grab a couple of LPs and CDs by artists I'd never heard of before. Travelin' Light, the whole CD, by Gabrielle Goodman blew my head off! Great feel, great energy, sophisticated, fun, and deep.

The missing leading lady of Jazz.......2003-11-27

I accidently bought both of her CDs in a clearence sale in a record store in Taiwan when I know nothing about her.I bought the, just becuase she looks like a good Jazz singer on the cover, and there are a some standards I like very much such as "Trav'lin' Light" , "Over the Rainbow". And the price of course was very low.

However, after I went home, I found out that I had discovered a new gem !! Garbrille's voice and interpretation of the songs are perfect !! As a backup vocal of Reberta Flack, she deserves more attention. I am glad she had these two albums out here, but don't understand why she didn't continue to release records after 1994. Even though, her "Until We Love" was been put in a complication of Verve in 2002-- "Jazz Singing", along with Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Ella ..... etc. (no Diana Karall, thank god!)

Her vocal has certain charm, which is able to transmit very delicate message through the singing while the passion within is so great. Her version of "Trav'lin' Light" and "Don't Explain" are so touching, and you can hear her perfect skill and also the emotional sensation.

Pity her albums are all out of stock now. I am so thankful that I own them !!

I wanted to have more cds of her. She is a great singer maybe the gratest one.
This CD has the best interpretation of My funny valentine tha I have ever head.
