Recorded at the 1979 Havana Jazz Festival, this short and powerful set, with Miles Davis alumni, drummer Tony Williams and guitarist John McLaughlin, and Weather Report bassist Jaco Pastorius, was one for the ages. The previously unreleased selections, one through five, are explosive, but mis-miked live tracks. Williams' "Drum Improvisation" segues into McLaughlin's fuzz-toned "Dark Prince," which does not swing in a silent way. Pastorious' theme song "Continuum" is scaled down to its essential twilight textures, while the drummer's "Para Oriente" - which later became a stable in V.S.O.P's book, and was recast as "Angel Street" - is rendered here in a funky, pre-grunge mode. The guitarist's "Are You the One, Are You the One?" previews the jam band craze. The rest of the cuts were recorded a week later in a New York studio, But the warts-and-all original sides are unmatched for their primal power. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

4 out of 5 stars Trio Of Delight.......2007-07-18

It would be very difficult to put together a more powerful trio of Fusion giants on one disc. Jaco was and is the greatest electric bass player that ever lived. And Tony Williams was probably one of the most creative drummers to ever pick up a pair of sticks. As far as John McGlaughlin, need I say more than Mahavishnu Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Glad to hear it finally make it from the vault.......2007-07-12

Tony Williams is a monster on this album. Jaco is Jaco and McLaughlin is McLaughlin, but to hear Tony play in this setting is amazing. If you're a fan of any of the three - buy it. If you're a drummer, this better be a part of your collection. You'll go crazy trying to figure out how Tony does what he does (how about the hands/feet roll during his drum improv...wow).

4 out of 5 stars unrealized potential (and other thoughts).......2007-07-11

It is amazing that these 3 seminal musicians only got together for 40 minutes of music. John McLaughlin, arguably the most musically wide-ranging guitarist I've ever heard; Jaco Pastorius, maybe the greatest electric bass player ever; and Tony Williams, one of the top 5 scariest drummers in jazz/rock. Unfortunately, this recording isn't the best one for either of these guys; probably more time spent playing together would've done the trick, therefore my review title. Unfortunately, this will never happen, as 2 of them are dead. As far as Sony keeping these recordings in their vault; well, we all know what motivates these companies, and it isn't music, so don't hold your breath for unreleased treasures seeing the light of day (hey, where's that McLaughlin/Hendrix recording that supposedly exists). Speaking of McLaughlin, check out his short gig on the Crossroads Blues Festival 2-dvd set (featuring Clapton and other blues icons), where he plays with Dennis Chambers and Zakir Hussain. The guitar playing is amazing, in case anybody thought he had "lost" anything in the past 30 years. In fact, I was shocked. Getting back to Trio of Doom, I think Jaco really holds this thing together. Comments, everybody?

4 out of 5 stars Trio of Doom vs Havana Jam 1/2.......2007-07-07

John McLaughlin should receive full credit for making this 1979 performance available. It has been well worth the wait, given that on Havana Jam 1/2 only three tracks were included, "The Dark Prince", "Continuum" and "Para Oriente". On this CD there is "Are You The One, Are You The One?" (live) plus the live versions of the three tracks mentioned above on one single CD. The recordings give new insights into the version of "Are You The One, Are You The One?" featured on "Johnny McLaughlin Electric Guitarist" as well as "The Dark Prince" on The One Truth Band's " Electric Dreams".

3 out of 5 stars Legendary meeting, a bit less than legendary performance........2007-07-05

In 1979, a group of jazz musicians gave a series of performances in Havana, one of the seemingly endless gestures of art reaching out through the blocade to Cuba. Legendary among these performances was the "Trio of Doom" performance, a power trio of guitarist John McLaughlin, bassist Jaco Pastorius and drummer Tony Williams, all at the heights of their powers. Their brief performance (about 25 minutes) was intended for partial release, but McLaughlin blocked it, instead pulling the group in the studio for a brief session that was then released, with crowd noise dubbed in, as these performances (a popular technique since at least Duke Ellington's legendary "Live at Newport" performance). This CD gathers together all the material-- the 25 minute live show and about 15 minutes of studio material.

McLaughlin's concerns may have been a bit extraneous-- the live performance has its flaws, to be certain (Jaco wanders off key briefly on "Dark Prince", "Are You the One, Are You the One?" threatens to fall apart), but there's a rare energy and power to the performance that really can't be underestimated, starting with Williams brief drum solo intro that sets the mood for high tension before welcoming his band mates on a racing "Dark Prince". For me, as a Jaco fan, the highlight is "Continuum", performed with grace as Pastorius and Williams stick true to the studio recording and McLaughlin offers a superb commentary that sounds both new and natural.

The studio material, particularly when presented next to the live takes sounds a bit sterile. "Dark Prince" probably best illustrates this-- live, it has an energy and urgency to it, McLaughlin's guitars sound dirty and fierce, Pastorius and Williams explode full of energy. In the studio, McLaughlin's tone, while still overdriven, cleans up and the rhythm section gets a bit too lockstep.

All of the material has been remastered and sounds fantastic-- the live material in particular is notable, clearly the source tapes were in good shape, this could have been recorded yesterday. The set is augmented by brief liner notes by McLaughlin and an essay discussing the performance and subsequent studio session.

This recording is difficult to rate-- the sentimental part of me wants to give it five stars and an endlessly positive, glowing review, but in all honesty, while this is a great recording and one that I'm ecstatic to have, it's not exactly the sort of jaw-dropping performance you'd hope it'd be. Fans of any of the three artists will want this, but don't expect something that'll shake the world.

As good as tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano's recent quartet albums featuring piano master Hank Jones were, they didn't prepare us for the sublimity of this two-man encounter. Duets Live has it all: brilliant and spirited individual playing, exceptional rapport, a terrific mix of songs and a luminous awareness of jazz in all its varied forms. What makes Lovano and Jones so compatible, even though they are separated by more than three decades, is the ease with which they each straddle and move back and forth across the line beween modern and pre-modern (in this, Lovano recalls Coleman Hawkins, one of the giants Jones backed). Much of the material is steeped in classic bop, but Jones points the way back to an earlier golden era with his lambent sparkle and Lovano comes at songs like "Charlie Chan" (his salute to Charlie Parker), Thelonious Monk's "Four in One," and Tadd Damerson's "Soultrane" from consistently fresh angles even as he applies his classic husky sound. Still a force at 88, Jones elegantly frees three of his late brother Thad's tunes from their big band trappings and in the solo spotlight pulls out stops on the standard, "Oh! Look at me Now!" It's a performance of gusty expression and poetic delicacy, slyness and warmth, and endless smiles. Is it too much to ask for a volume two? --Lloyd Sachs

mr jones playing is great as always.mr lovanos playing is the most distinctive of all the current sax players. the playing on this album is very good, the monk tune "four in one" is my favorate. the only thing i not not like is that the piano could have been recored with a little more volume.

5 out of 5 stars A MAGNIFICENT DUO: HANK & JOE IN A TIMELESS, BEAUTIFUL JAZZ PERFORMANCE.......2007-05-13

Five MAGNIFICENT Stars!! The legendary jazz keyboard master Hank Jones and legendary tenor saxophone titan, Joe Lovano, have conjured up one of the best jazz duet performances in years!! And they are caught live at the intimate Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in the Frederick P. Rose Hall, which is the Jazz At Lincoln Center performance complex in NYC. These are timeless, beautiful, flawless performances by two jazz masters who have almost restlessly searched the jazz spectrum for fulfillment in many formats over the years. They definitely have found something very special here that just may require an encore and it happened in a great venue. Stepping away from Mr Lovano's quartet, these two incomparable musicians have all of the propulsion and rhythm that is needed to propel these excellent performances along nicely. Unencumbered by bass and drum, they bend and stretch the time at will, with Hank providing solos and colorations as well as wicked time-keeping 'stride piano' with Joe declaratively soaring above and in between, making for some wonderful mellow jazz music. '80ish' Mr Jones plays with equal fire as '50ish' Mr Lovano making this duo an empathetic match made in jazz heaven.

The 'Pieces De Resistance', the best of the best, are wall to wall equally-captivating performances which proceed without letdown from song to song. But I especially like the fire by both players on "Lady Luck", written by Hank's brother, Thad, and "Kids Are Pretty People". I also love Joe's nod to older tenor players with his 'Ben Webster-ish' tenor sax effects on "Lullaby" and his nod to Yardbird Parker on "Charlie Chan", so reminiscent of Miles' "Half Nelson". Hank gets two solo bites of this CD apple with a wonderful, shimmering "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin' " and "Oh! Look At Me Now", which is fitting since "Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola" is known for great solo piano performances. Joe gets off what is probably his best solo, alone and later with Hank, on a swirling performance of Monks' "Four In One", blowing hot, liquid strings of notes. Pure, timeless, magnificent jazz music! Encore, gentlemen! My Highest Recommendation. Five ENJOYABLE Stars!!

Every year sees a crop of newly found jazz gems, but rarely are listeners treated to anything as special as this 1957 concert recording of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, which was accidentally discovered in an unmarked box by a Library of Congress engineer early in 2005. Until now, fans could only dream of hearing these two immortals play together beyond the three studio tracks they left behind. But here they are, hitting their stride at an all-star benefit concert, basking in the chemistry they had developed in Monk's quartet during the preceding weeks at New York's Five Spot. Coltrane's playing is a revelation. He's both an inspired accompanist and a galvanizing soloist, taking the music to new heights with his bold, brilliantly challenging, and sometimes jaw-dropping phrases, note clusters, and blasts of power. Sharing with Coltrane a newfound sense of freedom following the personal and professional troubles that had plagued them both, Monk is clearly tickled to be in the tenorist's presence, injecting humorous commentaries and otherwise asserting his eccentric genius as a pianist. The material, which was very well recorded by the Voice of America, includes Monk classics like "Epistrophy," "Monk's Moods," and "Evidence," as well as a striking rendition of the standard "Sweet and Lovely." This is music that not only bears repeated listenings, but also demands them--the ultimate definition of a classic. --Lloyd Sachs

I can't believe this sat in a box and the library of congress all this time! It makes me wonder what other gems they got in deep freeze. Thank Jeezy they found it. I love listening to this when I drive around town with the windows down on a summer night. Good, good, good. Hear it, love it, get it.

5 out of 5 stars Thelonious Monk Quarted with John colgrane at Carnegie Hall.......2007-05-29

This recording, unearthed after nearly fifty years on old tapes found at the Library of Congress, is a national treasure that speaks to all of us, after two generations. Surely this marks the work as art in its most universal sense: something with permanence, that will (I hope) last through the ages. I understand from a little research that Billy Holiday participated in this same concert, and regret that that recording has been lost! But this one, in my opinion, gets five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......2007-05-25

I've got a small but impressive jazz library, jazz has been a recent addition to my musical tastes. I'm not the biggest Coltrane fan, I prefer Cannonball Adderly and some others less inclined to go wailing away. I do not like Coltrane's A Love Supreme. Monk and Coltrane team up here with a very enjoyable performance. Excellent for background music or dedicated listening. The fidelity is superb, very high quality. Only negative is it's mono. Jazz fans will love this.

5 out of 5 stars Pure.......2007-05-20

It's funny what people find when they clean out closets. The people at Carngie Hall found a jewel and something unique and pure. A great addition to any jazz aficionado's collection. In reality a must have if you like jazz at all.

5 out of 5 stars You are there realism.......2007-07-19

Just like you are there with what may be the greatest working piano trio in the world today. Blue Note has really captured it with sound that is completely natural. Charlap and company have such grace and elegant refinement as they convey the heart of this wonderful music. The venue is well suited to their mastery and the sound is so natural and real. Bill Charlap has such a deep saturation and enjoyment of this music it just flows out of him. These musicians don't need to prove anything, but like the professionals they are they just let it flow and get in the groove. And you can tell they're having fun at it and the crowd sure is eating it up. They sure can swing and get your feet tapping along. This trio is so tight that they move along as one. Bill Charlap Trio is my favorite contemporary jazz trio, and I have most of their recorded output. I can't say enough. Get this one, since it really captures them live for the first time. A great starting point that will likely lead you to many more gems on record.

5 out of 5 stars 4 ½ stars.......2007-06-04

From Charlap's solo choruses in "Rocker," at once burning hot and supremely cool, to the wistful "Last Night While We Were Young," this is an absorbing and sometimes startlingly good record. Although it doesn't seem right that Charlap tends to get most of the attention - i.e. the focus on Charlap in interviews about the trio's work, his lone cover photo here, and some critics' annoying habit of dubbing the unrelated bassist and drummer "the two Washingtons"- he really is a fine player. His solos are consistently interesting and invigorating; his technique is impressive; and how about the way he uses the piano? Even if one may grow weary of a certain right hand tremolo/trill effect as transitional device, Charlap's quiet but hip comping, use of lower registers, piano-rattling glissandi, and superimposition of left hand and right hand are extremely effective and rather unique. So too are his undulating lines, at once muted and strong, and his enviable ability to create a translucent, ethereal musical space. It is for these reasons that "Autumn in New York" garnered such a reverent response from the Vanguard audience - and "My Shining Hour" such a raucous one.

Speaking of "My Shining Hour," let me not be guilty of the same Charlap-centered commentary I lamented earlier. As the liner notes point out, "the incandescent playing captured here is made possible by trust," a trust which in turn is only possible thanks to the rock-solid foundation provided by Peter Washington on bass and the combustible energy released by Kenny Washington on drums. Although I feel that Peter has not yet been ideally captured on recording, it is quite evident from this album and others that Kenny sets the fire under the band and leads them to "Shining Hour" heights. The very swinging feel of a potentially square tune like "Rocker" and potentially static arrangement of "While We're Young," as well as "Last Night While We Were Young's" magical coda, owe much to Kenny's fire, too.

It should be no surprise, then, that numbers like "Lady is a Tramp" cook when the Charlap Trio plays `em, and ballad arrangements like "All Across the City" are so good they almost hurt. But "While We're Young" also provides indisputable proof that this group can play in 3. So let's hear some more waltzes, and more of that glorious ebb and flow that another pianist named Bill inspired at the same Village Vanguard :) How about more bass and drum solos too?!? (come now, 2 bass solos and 1 drum solo really are not enough for a whole album). Then, consider the possibilities of straight 8, Latin, funk, mixed meter...you know these guys can do it. To me, this would make a visit to see them at the Vanguard or Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola that much more memorable - and their group that much better.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Snapshot of an Excellent Trio.......2007-06-01

After many years of widespread acclaim as one of the best working groups in mainstream jazz, the Bill Charlap Trio has finally issued its first live recording, and the results are most impressive. Individually, the group's members are all virtuoso musicians of the highest caliber, and in any setting they can be counted upon to deliver vivid, engaging performances (see for example Charlap's collaborations with Warren Vaché and Peter Washington's work with the great Tommy Flanagan). However, when they play together their rapport is so strong that each seems to bring out the best in the others, and even on the trio's studio recordings they sometimes attain a level of controlled intensity that is downright mesmerizing, both on uptempo numbers and on slow ballads. Here, they reach that level again and again, and the interplay among them is consistently thrilling; each plays with great energy and creativity, but also with great precision, and they are so perfectly attuned to one another that when they improvise together they do so with a degree of cohesion and unity that is nothing short of astonishing. ("My Shining Hour" provides an especially good example of this.) Their own enjoyment of what they can do is both palpable and infectious, and while they never indulge in the kind of showboating that sometimes mars live recordings, the presence of an attentive and appreciative audience does seem to inspire them. The sounds made by that audience are not the least bit obtrusive, but their applause helps to create a pleasant atmosphere of immediacy, as does the immaculate sound achieved by engineer Joel Moss. The disc is also nicely programmed, though there are fewer rarities than one might expect given Charlap's extensive knowledge of the American songbook and his penchant for reintroducing overlooked but worthy material.

In all, this is a most welcome document of an exceptional group in action. It is also long overdue, so let's hope that volume two will follow in short order!

Recorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, this is Diana Krall's first live album. Backed by her quicksilver combo of bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and guitarist John Pisano (on some tracks), Krall's jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this program of standards, ballads, and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here with You," Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care," and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon," Krall's snappy, postbop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat "King" Cole and Jimmy Rowles. Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" is a great choice for an encore, and the CD concludes with Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" (a studio track from a film called The Guru), with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and bassist Christian McBride. This collection only hints at what Diana Krall has to offer in the future.--Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Diana Krall at her best.......2007-06-20

Hoppin', jazzy live performance -- my favorite Diana Krall CD.

1 out of 5 stars you know that.......2007-04-12

shush shuh shuh shuh sound that new cordoroy pants make? Well that's what Krall sounds like wiht her sibilant "s". Is she singing through false teeth?

5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable and that's all that matters..........2007-02-24

For those reviewers trying to compare Diana Krall to people like Sarah Vaughn... forget it!!! She's not Vladamir Horowitz or the Pope either!!! To give her a low rating based on that is absurd.

This is a very very good Jazz band and Diana Krall swings. She plays well and she does an incredible amount with the voice that the maker gave here. The album is very enjoyable to me and it's a good place to start if you want to hear Diana Krall.

Is she great? That question is so subjective and who cares anyway. One reviewer suggested that calling her great was disrespectful to the great Jazz singers. Popular singers like Diana bring attention to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn and Sinatra etc... People start with Diana and move backward from there... 5 stars from this reviewer!!!

5 out of 5 stars Not a fan of live albums, but this one's energy shines through.......2007-01-19

Diana Krall is amazing no matter whether she's live or in studio recording. This is her first live album and is based on a lot of jazz standards. What I like is this has the energy of a live album, but someone has engineered most of the audience sussurus out.

5 out of 5 stars terrific band.......2007-01-19

I do enjoy Ms. Krall's singing but for me it's the incredible interplay between the musicians (including Krall's piano) the merits the 5 stars. I acually have the DVD which I highly recommend. Anthony Wilson not only plays brillantly but gets the best guitar tone of any other live recording I've heard. Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton are tight and telepathic - pure genuis in rhythm. Both Claus Ogerman and Allan Broadbent offer great arrangements and work the Orchestra deftly. And Diana sings. The production is perfect. This could not be any better.

Kenny Burrell turned 75 on July 31, 2006. That night he finished a five-day run at Yoshi's in Oakland and then the next day played with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra in Santa Cruz. This CD commemorates the occasion with performances from both nights, presenting Burrell's sparkling guitar in settings that range from an intimate trio to fronting Wilson's 17 -piece band. The material reflects Burrell's long career and broad associations. Among the small group tracks, there's a beautiful quartet sequence of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," J.J. Johnson's "Lament," and Miles Davis's "All Blues," each demonstrating Burrell's consummate lyricism and absolute mastery of the mainstream modern. The big-band tracks pick up on associations with Duke Ellington, including the elegant "Sophisticated Lady" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," with the 88-year-old Wilson providing a sparkling foundation that has Burrell and company soaring. Best of all is the extended "A Night in Tunisia" with a septet that has organist Joey DeFrancesco and flutist Hubert Laws. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars The classic Maynard album.......2007-05-16

As this album influenced my jazz tastes through junior high and high school, and into college, I spent countless hours listening to these tunes. Through 30-plus years, I've worn out three of the original albums and at least six tapes before this CD was released. To sit with headphones on and listen to the live atmosphere from Jimmy's takes me to the days of live concerts where high school and collegiate jazzers would sit in awe of the Master's stratospheric work, and the interaction of the musicians. All of the charts are outstanding, including the classic McArthur Park. Nice and Juicy is a fun chart, the Fox Hunt just kicks and Got the Spirit is the perfect closing for a great set.
Perhaps the best words for this album were uttered by Maynard himself as the band played "Blue Birdland" at the conclusion of the album: "I hope we get one hell of an album out of this."
You surely did, Mr. Ferguson, you surely did.

5 out of 5 stars Maynard Ferguson - Live at Jimmy's.......2007-05-12

This is Maynard's greatest live album and possibly his best album period.

    5 out of 5 stars Pilates4me.......2007-04-13

This is such an incredible cd. I feel it's one of his best. I've been waiting for a long time for it to be put on cd and so happy that it finally has been. Worth every penny! I listened to the record(aging myself!) growing up and could listen to this everyday for the rest of my life! Got the Spirit is a song that inspired me to play the sax! There's none better than it!

    5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-04-11

My records (yeah, remember those?) were stored for a couple of decades, so I was thrilled to unpack them 2 years ago. The first ones out of the box were MF Horn 4&5. It was a fantastic experience and brought tears to my eyes, even through the crackles, pops and distortion caused by what was probably thousands of playings.

Going through my collection, I found this set was THE most worn out of ALL the MF recordings I had (Chameleon, MF2, etc) which says alot about the quality of the recording, the music selection and my preference for live vs studio.

I was really excited to learn this was coming out on CD so I could finally hear a clean version. After waiting an extra couple of weeks beyond the initial promised shipping date, then another 2 weeks of being away from home, I finally got my hands on it yesterday. Whoohooo! It played all day yesterday in my office and on the way home from work.

I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviews, that this is a recording for the ages and would even suggest that, from a layman's point of view, if you have room for 1 MF album, this is the one. He gives Teo Macera credit for recording it ON THE STREET IN A MOBILE VAN, for cryin' out loud, so the quality of the sound is even more amazing. This was no over-miked, multi-take recording with the applause superimposed, but a "you are there" snapshot of a master at work with one of the tightest and most talented bands he ever had backing him up.

I was fortunate to go to the tribute concert held after his death last year in St Louis where alumni from his band rotated through (soon to be on DVD- don't miss that one!). Many of the musicians on this album were there and THAT will be one I watch for.

In life, all we ultimately leave behind is our legacy and he left one of love, teaching and incredible but humble talent.

RIP Maynard, they broke the mold after they made you.

5 out of 5 stars At last, this epic perfomance is on CD........2007-04-09

I wholeheartily concur with the other reviewers. This is Maynard Ferguson and his band at their best. After listening to the CD, I'm even more impressed with the recording quality of this live album. It is a better than most of the live jazz recordings made today -- more than thirty years
    later.

I've had the original record since it came out when I was in high school.
Maynard and his band were a huge influence on my friends and me. Several
of my classmates went on to be professional horn players. For me, Maynard
helped spark a lifelong appreciation of jazz and particulary big bands.

Sidenote: What became of Bruce Johnston? I think his bari solos on this
recording are some of my favorites of all time.

Something of a retrospective, Live Art is a treat for both newcomers and aficionados of the eye-popping artistry that is Bela Fleck, not to mention his more-than-capable partners in crime, bassist Victor Wooten and percussionist (well, it's not exactly a drum set he plays) Future Man. This two-disc set features live performances spanning a four-year period, with several guest appearances: Branford Marsalis sits in on "Flying Saucer Dudes," Chick Corea is featured on "The Message," and Bruce Hornsby appears on "More Luv." Several never-before-recorded songs appear here as well--the Scottish-inflected "Lochs of Dread," among others. Favorites like "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo," "UFO Tofu," and "Sinister Minister" are here as well, making this a well-rounded, enjoyable collection for any Fleck fan. Jazz? Folk? Bluegrass? Who knows, but whatever it is, it's well worth hearing. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Live Art is Lively and Lovely.......2007-07-03

I expected to like this one, but I was truly pleased at how much I do. Heretofore my favorites have been UFO TOFU and Perpetual Motion, but Live Art is now my 3rd equal favorite. Its variety and numbers which allow the world's foremost banjo artist to display his own compositions and phenominal skill are a delight.

    5 out of 5 stars Bluegrass Fusion.......2007-06-12

I first discovered Bela Fleck when he was just a bluegrass virtuoso, but now with this live album of the best of the music with the Flecktones, he's so much more. Bringing bluegrass and jazz together is genius and doing so with the humor of many of the pieces just adds to the mix. Most important, none of the virtuosity of his or any of his bandmates has been lost. Great album.

This album is INCREDIBLE. Start to finish, Bela & Company absolutely blow me away and make me realize that, as a musician, I will never reach the ability of the best I've ever heard. They, to me, are simply the best. And don't be shyed away by this praise, the music does not suffer because of their talent. Every song is original and the melodies are gorgeous. They showcase their genious on these two discs and this is a timeless classic for any bluegrass, jazz, classical, or rock fan. As close to perfect as an album gets.

5 out of 5 stars You have got to hear this album!.......2006-07-10

This has to be the most incredible album I've heard in years. My introduction to Bela Fleck and the Flecktones was on a trip to the States from the UK in 1993 on business. I flicked on the TV in my hotel room and there was a music festival on. I watched the incredible wizardry of Victor Wooton on the bass and was transfixed. Never before had I heard a banjo sound so exciting as it was they way Bela Fleck played it. I had only a few minutes to listen before I had to leave, but that experience left its mark. Why then did it take me 13 years to try out a Flecktones album? God knows, but all I can say is BUY THIS ALBUM! Whatever musical vibe you're into, whether Jazz, Bluegrass, etc, I can guarantee you will LOVE this album. The music is sensational, and the incredible talent of all the musicians is something I find it hard to put in words. As you can tell, I'm now hooked on Bela Fleck and the Flecktones! And I suspect you will be too.

It began almost as a lark when Carlos Santana encountered his longtime friend and hero Wayne Shorter on the concert trail in Atlanta, GA, in 1987. Carlos said, "Let's start a rumor that we're putting a band together."Wayne's eyes got bigger and brighter as he smiled and then responded: "Yeah, Carlos, let's start a rumor."

A few months later the Carlos Santana/Wayne Shorter Band performed its debut concert at The Fillmore in San Francisco, the beginning of a 26-concert tour throughout the U.S. and Europe. The performance of this magnificent band was recorded at Montreux, Switzerland, on July 14, 1988, and includes interviews with Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter and festival creator Claude Nobs.

I already have several Santana CD's and I love his particular sound.
I do appreciate jazz and fusion music a lot and also rock music.
This combination with Wayne Shorter is in my opinion a masterpiece and a must-have for Santana fans who also enjoy Jazz muzic. GREAT LIVE PERFORMANCE in good quality recording!

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't work that well, but who cares?.......2007-06-29

    I don't.

I've been longing to hear Carlos Santana in an all instrumental setting, sans the cloying vocals, for years. And he delivers, along with his altogether remarkable band, big time.

This is probably the worst I've ever heard Wayne Shorter. He just doesn't seem to be on board with the vibe. Consequently, his playing comes across as tentative, groping, unfocused. Plus, he's very poorly recorded--too far back in the mix and improperly mic'd. It doesn't even matter that Santana is half the musician Shorter is. This is his gig, and he nails it. Patrice Rushen (keyboards) ain't half bad either. Same for Alphonso Johnson (bass) and Leon Ndugu Chancler (drums). These dudes can play.

If you were hoping for a stellar Shorter performance (as I was) you're going to be disappointed (e.g., his lame theme from Star Wars quote on "Shh," strangely reprised and nearly beat to death on "Elegant People," coupled with his generally phlegmatic/pedestrian playing throughout). My advice? Get over it, and just sit back and enjoy some very smart live jazz/fusion instrumental music that always beguiles and sometimes mesmerizes.

    ****1/2.

5 out of 5 stars Dream Band: Santana and Shorter.......2007-05-18

For those of you who missed this short tour, this is a great performance of a an allstart dream band. Carlos and Wayne fill the Montreux skies with soaring sounds with great chemistry and energy. Patrice Rushen is no slouch as a great instrumentalist in her own right. Unfortunately, Alphonso's bass solo did not make the cut on this dvd\cd. Percussion is the backbone of all Carlos' bands and they mesh like a glove. Of all of their concert tours since the mid 70's, this is my favorite due to the once in a lifetime get together and a very creative period for this band. Thank You Carlos and Wayne for releasing this. Thanks

    5 out of 5 stars What Can I say?.......2007-05-13

What can I say about this album? Really, not much more than what has already been said about the guitar master himself, Carlos Santana. Carlos Santana is superb on everything he does and this CD is no exception. You can hear the pride he takes in his music and himself while listening to this CD. Carlos Santana is the best guitar player, whether it's rock, ballads, jazz, latino, or whatever it is, to come out of the late 60s and still going strong today. This is definately a must album for anyone. If you like rock, latino, and jazz music all in one, this is a perfect album to have.

    3 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2007-04-29

It would seem to be a match made in heaven but it was not to be. These are 2 of my favorite musicians but it really doesn't work.It appears to be Santanas band and Shorter doesn't fit. In his solos he tries too hard to be exciting and the recording engineer does not have him out front, he is overpowered by the electronics and percussion. A JAZZ TIMES review said it shouldn't have come out of the vault but that is abit harsh. If you like Santana you will like this. If you want great Shorter, forget it. And it is not really his fault.

    4 out of 5 stars 2 blues/jazz guitar giants finally release a live cd!.......2007-02-19

I am giving this cd 4 stars as much for the men involved as for the actual performances here. They play great (of course), but the material is more from the jam/blues/rock stuff that Carlton (especially) has favored in recent years. The 2 finest moments are "Rio Samba" (from Carlton's 1978 Warner Bros. monster album), and "Talk to Your Daughter" (from Robben's 1988 Warners debut). In fact, Robben's solo on Talk is a good enough reason to buy this album! Throughout, the band is tight and plays well together, with pianist Babko getting some nice solos as well. I can't help but think that if this set contained "Room 335" (who wouldn't love to hear Robben tear through those changes??), "It Was Only Yesterday", "Revelation", and "I Ain't got Nothin' But the Blues", well, this would be a 5 star cd and the gold standard for guitarists. As is, it is a worthwhile purchase and a nice listen to 2 old friends jamming and having fun!
