5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2007-02-22

This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended

5 out of 5 stars TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

3 out of 5 stars TV themes.......2006-07-05

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2006-02-17

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

The original 1978 Broadway cast recording of Stephen Schwartz's Working has long been awaited on CD, and this great-sounding 2001 release proves it was worth the wait. Surely one of the more unlikely sources for a musical was Studs Terkel's 1972 book that compiled interviews of American working people discussing their jobs and what they liked and disliked about them. Schwartz transformed these interviews into a series of songs written by himself, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Micki Grant, and pop singer James Taylor, and accordingly the variety of songs is as great as the variety of the workers featured. There's the lyric beauty of "The Mason," the rueful "Just a Housewife," the retiree's wry "Joe," the waitress's lilting "It's an Art," Taylor's pop-country "Brother Trucker," and the powerful emotion of "Fathers and Sons," realized by a compelling cast that features David Patrick Kelly, Joe Mantegna, Bob Gunton, and Lynne Thigpen, among others.

Six bonus tracks include a new version of the grocery checker song written for the 1999 L.A. Theatreworks production, Carnelia and Grant performing their own songs (unfortunately, Grant's track comes from a poor-quality audio source), and Schwartz's moving performance of "Fathers and Sons" from 1999's The Stephen Schwartz Album. Also welcome are 2001 notes from Schwartz paired with 1978 notes from Terkel, and a detailed listing of the composers and performers of each song. Working was filmed for American Playhouse in 1982. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An underrated musical.......2006-03-16

This musical seems to be very underrated, because it isn't done in a traditional style. There is no set storyline or characters. It is essentially a grouping of songs about different people and the work they do in their lives. Some of the songs are very powerful, like "Millworker", and some are just fun, like "Lovin' Al". Some songs date the recording, as songs like "Brother Trucker", while good, have a bit of a synthesized 70's feel. The majority of the songs are more traditional.

I saw this show done by my high school years ago, so maybe it holds a bit of nostalgia for me, but it is definitely worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Lesser Known Gem.......2005-12-26

I have never seen Working, but would love to, and I would love to perform it so as to revive interest in it. I found out about this recording from an online site, and I fell in love with it. It's a very modern style musical although from 1978. Were it on Broadway today, it would still be revelent to today's working class. My favorite number probably has to be "It's An Art", just because of its sheer fun. I could listen to that song all day and never get bored with it. I do, however, find "Brother Trucker" to be a bit tiring, and "Neat To Be A Newsboy" is just plain old, outdated, and ANNOYING! Other than that, wonderful ablum for an almost forgetten show.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Working!!!.......2004-06-12

I had the privilege of seeing a production of this wonderful musical at L.A. Valley College in May 2004. I quickly fell in love with the songs and the entire premise of the musical. Now, with this CD, I can finally sing along to all the brilliant songs over and over again, belting them out like there is no tomorrow.

What makes Working so special is that anyone can relate to the lyrics, they are powerful, beautiful, touching, and extremely real. Anyone who has ever worked a day in their life will feel the lyrics hit close to home. Whether you're a housewife, a valet parker, a fireman, a millworker, a teacher, a cleaning woman, or even a hooker, this musical has a place for you, no matter what job you do.The emotion, sincerity, and love expressed in the songs are amazing, and they are all extremely unique and a pure joy to listen to.

All the songs are fantastic but the stand-outs have to be "All the Live Long Day," "Just a Housewife," "If I Could've Been," "It's An Art," "Father's and Sons," "Cleaning Women," and "Something to Point to." I also have a soft spot for "Brother Trucker" and "I'm Just Movin" from the 1999 revival, which I am so grateful is included in this CD. This is a terrific, feel-great album everyone should listen to. Give Working a chance, it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars a good, if obscure CD.......2003-09-26

i admit that this is an obscure musical, but nevertheless i found myself in a production of WORKING as Grace, the millworker. upon listening to the cd, i found that each song characterized the character well. the newsboy song is NOT annoying and my favourite songs are "its an art", "cleaning women", "if i could've been" and "lovin al". I would only recommend this CD for a real musical theatre afficionado, as those who don't appreciate the beauty of a musical won't understand these songs.

5 out of 5 stars off the beaten path.......2003-07-10

I had never heard of this show until I stage managed a musical revue that included "If I Could've Been." That song grew on me, and I finally had to check out the rest of the soundtrack. All of the music on this CD is fantastic, and the lyrics feel sincere, creating beautiful moments for each character. Stephen Schwartz's best decision with this show was collaborating, allowing different composers to bring their own talents and specialties to the music, thus making it more real and less "Broadway." My only criticism is that the liner notes are slim.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful collaborations!.......2007-06-03

Eric Marienthal on Sax, Russ Freeman on Guitar, David Benoit on Keyboards, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums! These are some of the great musicians in this CD... David, I wait for the next album!

4 out of 5 stars A Most Welcome Comeback.......2006-12-07

Listening to this album makes me realize how much I missed Pack's singular songwriting and singing voice. These are wonderful and professionally excecuted adult contemporary songs that have that trademark Pack touch: terrific harmonies, stellar musicianship, and a subtle warmth that sticks with you and grows deep inside.

This is an album of collaborations, and they work very well. The opening track with Ann Wilson is terrific and sets a great mood. "Vertical Disbelief" is quite nice. And the two Ambrosia remakes (Biggest Part of Me and You're the Only Woman) are tasteful and mature updates that furnish new interpretive subleties while retaining the sweetness of the originals.

I definitely want more.

5 out of 5 stars inspired piece of work.......2006-09-05

David Pack's "Secret of Movin' On" is a truly inspired CD. Though this CD doesn't have the fanfare of many other releases, it has more depth and feeling than any CD that I have heard in quite some time. If you are a fan of David's work with Ambrosia, you will love this CD. You will also wish that Mr. Pack would have released more albums since the demise of Ambrosia.

4 out of 5 stars long awaited.......2006-08-19

this is a long awaited album from david pack. i've been listening to his cool voice since his days with ambrosia. he's provided vocals for david benoit, tom scott and several other artists. i had the chance of finally meeting him last night at a private party at the mystique inside morongo casino resort and spa. he performed songs on this latest release as well as the old time favorites such as "how much i feel", biggest part of me" and "you're the only woman". there's no better experience than listening to him sing his songs live. "secret of moving on" is really a good release. more power to david.

4 out of 5 stars great to hear again.......2006-07-19

I always loved Ambrosia and considered them one of the best bands of the 70's. I was so glad to see something new by an original member. The album is so reminiscent of the band but with some new material. I look forward to hearing new stuff from him.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

A criticism that has long dogged Billy Joel's career involves his songs' direct, heart-on-the-sleeve emotional sentiments and a musical approach that often revels in pop music's past glories instead of reacting against them. Ironically, those are the very strengths of Twyla Tharp's dialog-free pop ballet based on Joel's infectious canon of music, including his recent forays into the classical realm. This live cast recording is fueled by the piano and vocals of Michael Cavanaugh, who, backed by an ensemble handpicked by the songwriter, gooses every last drop of drama from Joel's already theatrical songs with a verve worthy of the legend himself. But divorced from Tharp's always kinetic choreography, and despite angular reworkings of "We Didn't Start the Fire" and other Joel standards, it's a collection that sometimes sounds akin to Joelmania: not really Billy, but an incredible simulation. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SO glad I bought it =].......2007-06-08

I never got the chance to see this musical on Broadway, so I bought the the CD - I absolutely love Billy Joel, and really like the musical! The CD came in brand new condition. Very happy with my purchase =]

4 out of 5 stars Still Billy Joel to Me.......2007-03-29

I still have to warm up to the guys voice a bit, but the music is awesome. It's amazing how well this music transitions and blends together. There was also a couple of things that got me by surprise. We Didn't Start the Fire is really different, and shows just what his music can do. I'm a little disappointed that Only The Good Die Young didn't get more appreciation, but none the less it still rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection of music.......2007-03-09

I saw the show and it was one of the greatest show ever, highly entertaining, great collection of music, as you listen to each song, you can actually imagine the show being played over and over, 5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Saw the show - what a memory.......2006-08-25

I love Broadway and grew up on the Piano Man (no I am a Chicagoan and haven't yet seen anything on New York's Broadway). This show did justice to both an now I listen to the CD to re-live the event!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept, But Originals Outshine.......2006-07-12

In anticipation of seeing this show, I picked up a copy of the cast cd. The orchestrations were crisp and Michael Cavanaugh's voice was quite good as the "piano man". Best Tracks include:

Scenes From An Italian Restaurant
Movin' Out
We Didn't Start The Fire
Goodnight Saigon

But after attending the show in Chicago last weekend, it was clear that the focal point is (and should be) Twyla Tharp's amazing choreography and the music merely forms a quaint storyline as background. And now? I'd just rather hear Mr. Joel's original versions instead.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Praise the Lord!.......2007-01-10

Even if gospel's not your thing, Tamela Mann might be! This lady has pipes! Better known for her acting in Tyler Perry's stage plays, Mann does some outstanding vocal work on this gospel cd. She has so much emotion and resonance in her voice, even non-believers will get swept up by the power of the Lord - and Tamela Mann!

5 out of 5 stars Anointed!!!!.......2006-11-02

It took me a long time to get this CD. I wanted to get it last year, but everywhere I went it was like $17.99 and I refuse to pay that much for a CD no matter who it is. I was flipping through the CD's at Walmart last night and there it was for $12.99. The only one they had, waiting for me. Mrs. Mann takes us into the presence of the Lord with this CD. I dont believe it got as much attention as it deserved though. It brought me to tears. Her voice is so anointed. I see below that another reviewer said that they alternate her music with Smokie Norful's. When I was listening to this CD, I was thinking to myself also that there is something about her music reminds me of Smokie Norful's music. She is like a female version of Smokie. Please saints go out and get this one, you will be glad that you did. Be Blessed.

4 out of 5 stars Fan Since Kirk Franklin and The Family.......2006-06-06

I have been waiting for her to come out with a CD since the Madea plays. I was so pleased with this CD. She can definitely bring it. Speak Lord, hallelujah, and Trust Him are wonderful. The only one I do not like is Gotta Keep Movin.

4 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-04-28

I bought this cd after Tamela Mann appeared at my church (3 days before Smokie Norful came) and that was a busy church-goin' week...LOL! But it was so worth it. She sang Speak Lord and the whole church was on its feet by the middle of the song. I'm pretty sure they sold out of the boxes of cd's she brought with her because the first of us to let out at the end of the service made a mad dash for the table (myself included) and they were flying out of the boxes. To hear her sing "Speak Lord" live...words cannot explain! It's like you're watching her on stage and she's just going for it all. Can't wait for a concert tour or DVD! I gave it 4 stars because the whole album did not have the same effect, which made it a bit inconsistent. Not that she should blow her voice out on every song, but with the right arrangements and song choices it can work. There were 3 other songs on here that were as good as Speak Lord but the rest were sub-par. I don't know if it was the songwriting or the arranging or what but something was definitely missing with production. It's as if all the money went toward those songs and these others were just minimum wage. For Tamela that is just not good enough! Money needs to be spent on each song to keep it consitent and get 5 stars and then some. Even with the Praise medley at the end, something more could've been done there. Don't know exactly what; but something. It shouldn't be so obvious that you're just filling space. I love the album and will keep alternating between her and Smokie and am definitely looking forward to her sophomore cd!!!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2005-11-04

This CD is AMAZING! As always, Tamela put her all into this project. I highly recommend this CD for anyone. It is DEFINITELY a MUST-HAVE in your CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening!.......2006-07-16

"Keep Movin' on" is a compilation that ,with a few exceptions, covers the last year of Sam Cooke's recording career. The last album released in his own lifetime, the great "Ain't That Good News" is almost completely covered here; along with rarities, singles and some of his very last recordings from November 1964.

For people who only know Sam Cooke from pop-hits like "Only Sixteen", "A Wonderful World" and "You Send Me", it may sound a little odd that Cooke is often called the creator of soul-music. This wouldn't be the case if they were familar with these late Sam Cooke recordings. "Ain't That Good New" is my favourite Sam Cooke original album; and most best from songs from that album such as "Meet Me at Mary's Place", "Good Times", "The Riddle Song" and the title track are included.

Other highlight are "Shake", "That's Where it's At" ( I believe this song inspired Otis Redding to do "That's How Strong my Love is" ), and the previously unreleased "Keep Moving On"

Fine informative 26 pages booklet included!

Essential listening for fans of early soul-music - and fans of good music in general!

5 out of 5 stars Gems and rares in his last days.......2006-05-08

Since I happened to give up a fine compilation CD "A Man and His Music", I had waited too long for listening to Sam Cooke's last recordings including 'A Change is Gonna Come', 'Another Saturday Nights', Good Times' and so on. However, now we can have them easily on CD because Abkco started releasing his hidden treasures, especially Cameo-Parkway recordings. If you want to taste only the cream of Sam Cooke tunes, you better get "Portrait of a Legend". But if you want to dig deeper, I recommend you to have this CD with "The Man Who Invented Soul" and CDs of his Soul Stirrers years.

4 out of 5 stars Second best Compilation.......2005-11-22

If you really want to get a good overview of the career of this legendary get 'Portrait of a Legend' because the overall standard of that CD is better.
Still this CD is worth buying because it has all the good songs and most of all has 'Yeah Man' (probably better known as Sweet Soul Music by Arthur Conley).
The best reason to get it is because it contains a previously unreleased but great song that is also the title of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars HIS CREATIVITY HAD NO END!.......2005-10-16

ONCE YOU POP IN THIS CD YOU'LL NEVER WANT TO REMOVE IT. I THOUGHT I KNEW WHAT SAM COOKE WAS ALL ABOUT UNTIL I BOUGHT THIS CD. LIKE THE RING IN THE RIDDLE SONG...HIS CREATIVITY HAD NO END. MY ONLY REGRET IN LIFE IS THAT I NEVER MET THIS ICON.

This Black Londoner of Barbadian descent truly snuck up on the pop world with this 1994 disc, her second recording. Her ode to self-reliance and persistence, "You Gotta Be," rode lilting pop jazz backing to widespread acceptance (except, curiously, on "urban" radio, where her sound was deemed not black enough). The inspired video of the song became a staple at VH1. The single is indicative of the rest of the album. Most of it was written after a painful breakup with a long-time beau, so her focus is on trumpeting resilience and self-nurturing themes. Her creamy voice and austere but swinging backing make it work. --Martin Johnson

i am very happy i bought this cd. wonderful and enchanting, worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars " I Ain't Movin' " Is Moving...Quality Stuff.......2006-05-24

I picked Desree's "I Ain't Moving" in late 1994 after she opened for Seal at a concert. She served as a perfect compliment to his performance and I could not think of a better opening act for the occasion.

I was aware of her previously with her ubiquitous single, "You Gotta Be" from the preceeding summer. What a gem of a recording. The whole album is eminently listenable and soothes the soul nicely. She carries off a very nice clear vocal delivery juxtoposed with rich narratives of self-empowerment as well as various facets of the human experience. Overall, it uplifts and soothes in a most inspiring manner.

The title track, "Feel So High", "Living In The City", "You Gotta Be", "Crazy Maze", "In My Dreams" are my favorites.

If you're only familiar with "You Gotta Be", you "gotta be" missing out on some good stuff here.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent album--something special you don't see these days.......2005-06-20

I totally agree with the reviewer below. It's a total shame people of the same ethnicity back artists solely for the reason because they share the same race. It's the same way in the Latino community. I think the quality/talent of the performers and musicians is what we should like music for. And with Des'ree, there's no shortage of quality. Although my favourite song off I Ain't Movin' is "You Gotta Be", the whole album is still quite good and worth owning. Alternative music (or an eclectic record collection period) is a great thing to have. The kind of songs off Ain't Movin' are something special that you don't see anymore these days.

For some other Alternative selections, I also suggest Fishbone's Truth and Soul, and also De La Soul's 3 Feet High & Rising.

4 out of 5 stars i dissagree with the amazon editorial review (as usual).......2005-05-16

first and formost i was a weird black female growing up.by the 90's when i was attending middle school, and high school i was into alternative EVERYTHING!.alt hip-hop/rap,alt metal, alt rock, alt R&B etc etc............but i still had a taste for hardcore rap music(go figure)

this album was no different really,

now even though i love this album i dissagree with the editors comment of "You Gotta Be," rode lilting pop jazz backing to widespread acceptance (except, curiously, on "urban" radio, where her sound was deemed not black enough)"

ok heres the problem i have with that statement.although i think some blacks are extremly narrow minded when it comes to musical genres,i still don't think blacks should support black artists just because their black.you know people like darius rucker, tracy chapman, living color(whom i love),lenny kravits(whom i also love).

the thing is it comes down to taste then race.just because a artist is black doesn't mean they automaticly should be shoved onto a urban radio station.i would'nt expect urban radio to play living color,or lenny kravits.besides thats showing favortisim,if their gonna play living color then they might aswell play aerosmith, and the rolling stones.thats just like some rock station playing emenim (wich i heard actually has happened)

not to say des'ree isn't urban, but for the most part she's not.i really don't think she fits on urban radio, and i felt the same way about dionne farris.black listeners and urban radio wasn't really shunning the artists in question, they just didn't fit urban radio's programming.ok i'm off my soap box now lol

now my judgemant on the album itself.this album is so smooth its like rich chocolate.like most people i got it for got to be.but damn i like the whole damn album(who knew?)and it still sounds nice(though slightly dated).i will admit though when i heard dionne ferris album this cd got played less and less.especialy when artists like maxwell, and d'angelo started to emerge(precursing the neo-soul movement).thats how i noticed des'ree REALLY didn't fit on urban radio, same goes to black artists like brenda russell (who's music was more of an adult contemparay imitation of R&B).

either way wether you listen to 2pac,bone thugs-n-harmony,sade,living color, metalica,or alice in chains i think you should keep a open mind when listening to des'ree's "i aint movin" you might actually enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars I FEEL SO HIGH!.......2004-03-17

Des'ree second delivery is full with smooth pop gems that exposed the different stages of love, a great slick production that flows throughly without any attmeptimg to change Des'ree direction of taking over her music, wich is pure and simple love songs, this album is truly a chillout one and it will suit any peaceful occation, not a party stomper though. Great album that includes such highlights like the unfairly charted single "Feel So High"(my personal fav), the ever radio played "You Gotta Be" and "Little Child", a great songtress a great sound, such a delight.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great........2006-07-28

This album was good. I liked how all the songs go together, but are sung by different people.

I liked this album when I first started playing it. I even planned on picking up another of their albums, but for whatever reason the CD has not made it back into my regular rotation and I have not listened to it recently.

That being said, I buy a lot of CDs that I listen to once and think I must have been crazy to purchase. There are no bad songs on this CD and I am glad I own it.

5 out of 5 stars Great amaericana.......2006-04-06

These guys have what it takes. Good country and bluegrass. Great song writing too. I give this cd 5 stars. If you love americana you must give a lisson. These guys are great to see live. They do a great show. I saw them in Atlanta and I bought this cd at the show. They are great.

5 out of 5 stars a breath of fresh air.......2005-06-15

I first started to listen to bluegrass almost 10 years ago and have run the gammut. A lot of the new 'jamgrass' bands that are popping up foresake the singing and songwriting so important to the genre. As strange as it sounds, I've been listening to more electronic music lately... but this album is absolutely a breath of fresh air. Beautiful melodies, harmonies, and fantastic playing. I'm almost afraid that Weather and Water will be a let down, but I can't wait to find out.

They are about to go on tour opening for Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan. I'm pretty sure they'll come out of that one with a legion of new fans, so be "cool" and buy this one today ;)

As an aside... I knew the fiddle player, Eamon, when I was living in Austin five years ago (yes, I paid for this album), and the reason for the name is that none of them were born American! Yet, they seem to have mastered this American artform... intriguing...

5 out of 5 stars great purchase!.......2005-06-14

This album is exactly what I've been searching for!! The music is so refreshingly honest and pure, and the musical talent in this trio is absolutely unbelievible....I love it! The Greencards somehow manage to make music that holds on to the traditional roots of the genre, and keep a contemporary sound at the same time. Terrific!!
---I Can't wait for the next one!!!---

5 out of 5 stars Amazing musicians.......2005-06-10

This is one of the best bluegrass albums I've heard in years! The musicianship and overall sound coming out of this band is completely mind-blowing and sets a new precedent in my book. With such song writing ability, I look forward to hearing a lot more of them. And with this being an album they released on their own, I can't wait for the new release due out on June 28th.

5 out of 5 stars READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY.......2006-11-29

Do NOT buy this version - buy "Club Classics, Vol. 1 - 10th Anniversary Edition" instead. That version is the 1999 remaster of the British edition of this CD. It has all the tracks on this CD (including the original CD version and the single version of "Back to Life"), plus bonus tracks and improved sound.

Now, once you do your search and find the 10th Anniversary edition, you should absolutely buy this CD. This was one of the best releases of 1989. It almost singlehandly brought back 1970's-influenced soul music and contains some of the best house music of 1989.

It is a very warm-sounding album, with a rich sonic texture. What the hell does that mean? These aren't just some pre-programmed pop ditties; Jazzy B. and Nellie Hooper put some thought and effort into this one. They also got screwed out of the 1989 Best New Artist Grammy (the winner? none other than those musical revoluntaries, Milli Vanilli - who were not the best, new or even artists).

I'm not going to go into the individual tracks, other than to say that if you like "Back to Life" and "Keep On Moving" you are going to like this CD. A hits compilation won't do Soul II Soul justice. Buy this CD and listen to the entire album instead.

5 out of 5 stars Soul II Soul - An influential Black UK Music Group.......2005-11-04

Soul II Soul are one of the most influential music groups in history. When tracks such as "Fairplay", "Keep On Movin" and the massive UK No. 1 "Back to Life" hit the charts in the late 1980s, black music groups across the UK suddenly switched to producing harmonious vocals over hip hop beats. "Another Soul II Soul rip off" was a popular quote when music magazines reviewed such releases.
Originally a sound system, famous for their party's at "Africa Centre" and the Fridge Nightclub in London, the group was a loose collective of singers and instrumentalists, based around founder Beresford Romeo AKA "Jazzie B". This release was originally named "Club Classics Volume I" - and not "Keep On Movin" as per the re-issue.
"A Happy Face, A Thumping Bass...for a Loving Race" was Soul II Souls motto - which the "funki dreds" certainly embodied. "Back to Life", the groups highest charting single ever, is here in a capella form only. Well, the track starts of a capella. Three minutes in, and Caron Wheelers vocals are laced with one of the grittiest hip hop beats ever produced (the beat was later sampled by a slew of American hip hop artists including The Goats, LL Cool J, Mobb Deep, Yo Yo, Ice Cube and Ghetto Boys ) before the track melds into "Jazzies Groove" - in which Jazzie speaks the "story" of Soul II Soul over a funky bassline and chorus horn stabs. Soul II Soul enjoyed considerable - if but brief - success stateside, when "Back to Life" hit the Billboard RnB charts. Jazzie B appeared to present an award at the American Music Awards in 1990.
This album's production sounds as fresh as it did upon its initial release and its fusion of diva vocals and hip hop rhythms would resonate with most modern RnB, funk and soul fans.

5 out of 5 stars Miss this one -.......2005-04-09

I love "Back to Life" and "Keep on Movin'." I purchased the cassette back in June of 1989. As the years went on, I misplaced my cassette. Today, these songs are really popular and I hear them several times a month on my local radio station, but I am so thankful for the opportunity to purchase this one again, especially the CD. Thank you Amazon!!

5 out of 5 stars You should get this one.......2004-11-26

The songs in this CD are incredible. I don't know why this group never caught on in the United States. All of the songs hit the core of soul music. It's at the top of my list for dance music in this genre. The beat throughout defies description. It's alive, powerful, vital. Take this cd to your next aerobic class, and I'm sure it will be played more than any other, because almost all the songs are jumpin'. You must get this one.
