4 out of 5 stars I get a kick out of you........2006-01-19

This was Esquivel's "sequel" to Other Worlds, Other Sounds. After his breakup with RCA Records, he recorded this album for Reprise Records. It opens with the bombastic "The Breeze and I", which is one of the best things he ever recorded. The rest of the album features typical Esquivel. Eccentric arrangements, "zoo zoo zoo" singing chorus, weird instrumentation. You know, all that cool stuff. This is an essential album for Esquivel fans.

5 out of 5 stars I think this is his best.......2004-05-27

If you are thinking about trying Esquivel, this is the one to get. It is a CD that really grows on you, regardless of your music taste or background. A classic

5 out of 5 stars The lone Reprise Esquivel is a WINNER.......2002-01-18

Frank Sinatra really dug Esquivel (no, I am not kidding). So when Juan and RCA were at loggerheads regarding his controversial and subsequently unreleased SEE IT IN SOUND, he jumped ship and recorded an LP for Frank's Reprise label. The recording technique, using 35mm film instead of magnetic tape, yielded a terrific soundstage and unparalleled dynamic range for the time. The full orchestra is on board for this outing and they play really well. Don't buy this one thinking buzzimba and wild stereo effects. This is straight ahead arranging but with the pow pows and usual Esquivellian orchestral flairs. The sound alone is a real marvel (Mercury records employed this recording method very successfully in their classical music department and Command Records literally made a living with 35mm film recording). You gotta get this one.

5 out of 5 stars melt.......2001-10-05

Like the TV era it evokes, this album projects perfection in life and living. Nothing can harm you when Esquivel is your background music, and the more martinis and pipe smoking the better. Unlike some of his more frenetic efforts, this Esquivel album is absolutely majestic and soothing. It will counter all but the worst of moods.

5 out of 5 stars Esquivel Genuis.......2001-10-04

After four years of recording for RCA, Esquivel's popularity was still high, and yet, his contract was not renewed. So, he signed on to the Sinatra owned label, Reprise. This album has many cuts that have been used on commercials, news specials and television shows. His arrangement of "I Get A Kick Out Of You" is so original, that you'll be playing it over and over again and attempt to analyze his method of orchestration. The only other piano version that can top Esquivel in this song is Nat King Cole. Cole's version is available on the album "The Piano Style of Nat King Cole." Another great album, worthy of owning. Although the playing time on this album is short, every tune is a model of unique arranging and stunning orchestral arranging. If you are new to Esquivel, this is a great album in which to get started This one is intended as a sequel to his RCA release, Other Worlds, Other Sounds, but the fact that is not as eccentric as some of his other releases, make this an easy album to new comers to the great Esquivel. A great album.

Album Description

Ever since his debut at 24 years old, Mark Erelli has exhibited an uncommon musical maturity. In a few short years, he's got four albums to his name, over 700 concerts under his best, and multiple awards. During a time when most young artists are still searching for their own voices, he has quietly build one to the most impressive and varied reputations in modern roots music. On his latest album, Hope and Other Casualties (out March 2006 on Signature Sounds) he ups the ante, with a brave and searingly honest tour de force, cementing himself as one of the best young male singer/songwriters on the scene today. Hope and Other Casualties is an unapologetic and timeless collection of deeply personal and affecting songs, effortlessly moving from songs of love, politics, family, resignation, and redemption. Infused with heartfelt song-craft, invigorating tempos, and arresting melodies Erelli has crafted a near-perfect and career defining album.

5 out of 5 stars A little left.......2007-04-18

A little left leaning for this conservative guy. I don't share his views but I love his telling of them.

4 out of 5 stars Well-sung, consistent pop-country-folk album........2006-08-29

After one listen: Good songs all-round. A very polished sound, especially on the first few tracks. Erelli plays guitar, harmonica and mandolin among others. Producer Entress plays rhythm section and more. The accompaniment is a little distant on some of the tracks, sort of a Lo-Fi, fat sound on the drums, and the bass is quite prominent. On purpose, I'm sure. And it mostly works well. The music might have a little more energy with a real band.

Erelli's voice is highly inflected without being too emotive, like a New England hillbilly. He is a more interesting songwriter than you'll hear on a typical country-folk release. And the chord changes are non-obvious and, on the best songs, imaginative and beguiling. Some of the songs start and end smoldering, working up to a more intense burn in the middle. They seem to wander quite a bit before resolving. The main themes seem to be alienation from grown-up life and...the city-state at war. The singing is at once sad and plaintive, and also strangely cheerful.

My only criticism is a lack of contrast. I think he should put in a deliberately VERY sad song in there...and a very happy one. A fast, loud one, and a slow, quiet one. And a little standard blues. As it is, the overall moods and dynamics of each track are sometimes not quite as distinctive as they could be. And he could work on the chord progressions just a little.
(I have the same issue with the hugely over-rated Bob Dylan. I'm sure Erelli would consider that criticism to be high praise, since some of this music echoes Dylan.)

I also would like to hear Erelli sing and play guitar to a Conga or Bongo accompaniment for just one track. But that's just me.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs, Great Art........2006-05-03

With Hope and Other Casualties, Mark Erelli has taken his already impressive song writing skills and fine musical sensibilities to a new level. The CD's cover calls back to the great Bob Dylan album, The Times, They are a Changing. This may seem overly dramatic, but listen to Hope before you form an opinion. As Bob was speaking to the times in which America lived then, Mark is speaking to us--right now. Hope and Other Casualties is filled with morsels (and slabs) of wisdom on the America in which we now find ourselves. While not a complete departure for Mark, Hope shows that, when it seems we may not be grasping the greater truths, he will speak with more authority.

There is so often a pattern with artists, where they start with something strong (or fun or catchy) and then seem to get lost--as if they become distracted or loose their vision. This has never been a problem for Mark. From his first CD (Mark Erelli), he has demonstrated a great ability to write intelligent, yet accessible songs and perform them very well in several different styles. That first disc almost sounds like a job resume, to me--a demonstration of the diverse ways in which Mark can make music. But, where some other artists seem to get lost, Mark's subsequent recordings have become more refined--more wise--even though the styles have varied. This does not mean his earlier work was un-polished. Rather, he is sounding more comfortable with himself and his music. Mark's first CD was VERY strong. But, he just gets better with each new effort. And, the staggering statement made by Hope and Other Casualties is more than just its songs. Mark's songs are like paintings. But, his recordings are like sculptures. This may not be apparent on the first listen. But, if you actually spend some time with it, you will hear the great care and intelligence that went into every instrumental sound. Each song will begin to evolve in your mind and become a complete space of its own--the space where his stories live. Hope and Other Casualties is much more than just a recording of great music. Mark's music is truly great, even to just read. But, as a complete work, Hope and Other Casualties is great art.

Hope and Other Casualties shows that Mark is not just another gifted singer/songwriter. It is becoming clear that he is one of the very finest songwriters we have. In 20-30 years, he will be compared with the very greatest writers of American music, period. Like Bob's "Times" masterpiece, Mark's "Hope" should be a watershed. This is a significant musical work and deserves the highest respect given to any artist.

5 out of 5 stars Five Time Winner!.......2006-03-09

The evolution of Mark Erelli continues with his fifth album since his amazing 2001 debut, and like the previous four, Hope & Other Casualties is worth the price of admission. His talent continues to grow both as a musician and as a songwriter, delivering lyrics and songs that tell stories that capture your attention and pull you in. This CD is perfectly produced by Mark and Lorne Entress, his long time collaborator, with a mix of songs that are varied but all tie together perfectly. "Here and Now" is an up-tempo opener that asks an important question for all to ponder, and ends with Ron Sexsmith's "God Loves Everyone", a fitting closer. "The Only Way", a post 9-11 song that has been a fan favorite at live shows now has a perfect home as part of a wonderful song collection that includes a song about a circus and others that talk to the circus that is today's world. Like the great singer/songwriters of the past 40 years, Mark can make a political point as well as any of them, yet he does it without offending folks who might lean toward the other side. Mark is one of today's best talents who deserves more attention than he's getting, so buy this CD now and then gather up your friends the next time he's in your area and see one of his great live shows.

Album Description

It's been said that Memphis is mentioned in more song titles than any other city. On In The Mood For Memphis you'll hear a diverse musical testimonial from some of Memphis' most dynamic voices. For the first time ever, a CD has been compiled celebrating the rock and blues Mecca of the world with 16 songs, each with Memphis in the title. From the mainstream "Walking In Memphis" performed by Eddie Harrison to the underground sounds of Mud Boy & the Neutrons' "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again," In The Mood For Memphis is filled with soul-pleasing, groove-controlling, guaranteed satisfaction.

Powerful and charismatic singers Gary Johns and Susan Marshall each perform different versions of the title track. Don McMinn's funky "Memphis In May" sets the mood for an exquisite rendition of "Memphis In June" by jazz diva Joyce Cobb. With Delbert McClinton on harmonica, Dan Penn's "Memphis Women and Chicken" is smooth, Southern and irresistible. You'll also hear Holly Shelton's sultry interpretation of W.C. Handy's "Memphis Blues" (followed by a haunting instrumental with The W.C. Handy Preservation Band). Songwriter Bob Cheevers adds his irresistible "Memphis Till Monday" exclaiming the virtues of good ole Memphis barbecue and fun. Gusto jumps in with a lively version of Lyle Lovett's "I've Been To Memphis." Other highlights include Daddy Mack Orr and Billy Gibson on the Chuck Berry/Johnny Rivers classic "Memphis," the soulful sounds of the Memphis All-Stars on their feel-good original "Lovely Memphis Day," and The McCarty-Hite Project's "Memphis Town." Cult rockers The Delta Queens include their raw, but fiercely independent "Memphis (Highway 72)," as the almost final track.

Patrick Dodd concludes the CD in a reflective tone with "Memphis Keeps Rolling On," a gospel-tinged pop ballad that examines the struggles and triumphs of Memphis and its legacy.

Since 1992, Inside Sounds has focused on producing the best of Memphis, from blues to alternative rock, and is the parent company of the critically acclaimed Memphis Archives label.

4 out of 5 stars Memphis moods.......2004-02-18

16 songs of and about Memphis - in fact, Memphis is in the title of each and every song.
I was a wary of this album at first but the more I thought about it, the more I understood it. Memphis' diverse musical situation needs to be celebrated and Dattel has compiled a carefully conceived and varied selection here.

Some songs will be recognized, some won't. Some were done in Memphis (most of them) and some in other places. Some songs are old, some songs are new, but for the most part it's a blues album, and since it's from Memphis, even the weak cuts are strong.

Susan Marshall's "In the Mood for Memphis" begins the album and seven songs later, we hear vocalist Gary Johns' version of the same song. Longtime player Don McMinn tells about "Memphis in May" and Joyce Cobb tells us all about "Memphis in June" in her unique.

Two songs jumped out at me and made the album worth the time - Jim Dickinson's Mud Boy and the Neutrons hammering out his friend Bob Dylan's "Stuck Inside of Mobile (With the Memphis Blues Again). " It's done with verve and vigor and I've always liked Jim's voice.

Eddie Harrison's version of "Walking in Memphis" is the best version of that Grammy-winning song I've ever heard. I remember seeing and hearing Eddie Harrison and the ShortCuts 35 years ago and thought they were great, and he's an even better singer now.
From beginning to end, the musicianship quality is top-notch and Dattel and company have an excellent CD here. If you're already from Memphis, go get this CD and celebrate your town. If you're not from Memphis, come on down! There's magic here.

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

The cover of Other Worlds, Other Sounds says it all--like the woman in red dancing on a moonscape, this 1958 long-player was all about fantasy. And Esquivel, the legendary Mexican conductor-arranger and forefather to the entire lounge and exotica renaissance of the mid '90s, wasn't afraid to fantasize about his instrumentation nor the newfangled invention known as "stereophonic sound." Essentially, this is an entire album of standards played in a beguine tempo with a percussive orchestra and a humming chorus, but--under Esquivel's knob-twiddling fingers--the disc turns into magic. Voices ring back and forth between speakers, horns explode out of nowhere, and piano sounds cascade out of the stereo. This is what hi-fi was all about, and--though it was merely a precursor to the composer's even stranger sonic experiments--it's also one of his most cohesive albums. Four Corners of the World, a relatively straightforward piano-based lounge LP featuring Esquivel tickling the ivories, is also included here. For an even better overview of Esquivel's wild sonics, check out the compilation Cabaret Mañana. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Blastisimo from the past!.......2004-05-14

One of the first albums my dad bought to accompany his new HI FI!! in the sun-drenched, super-optimistic California of the late fifties. Our family is from Mexico---as is Esquivel---and, like Esquivel, my dad was a real non-traditionalist. He'd probably rip the Ivy off of college walls, and had the makings of a real lounge lizard. He loved everything modern, what today would be called retro--cantileaver furniture, etc. And Esquivel was, for all practical purposes, his life's soundtrack. The "zu zu's" on the samples bring back tons of memories. Check it out, swizzle a really dry, really cold martini, turn on the a/c and have a ball. This is the music to do it by.

5 out of 5 stars Esquivel hits the states with a POW!.......2002-02-14

This LP, Juan's first American recording, helped to usher in the "bachelor-pad, stereophinic sound spectacular" demonstration music of the early stereo years. Yet his arrangements are all first class originals. Whereas many other arrangers resort to gimmickry (sound effects and such) Esquivel integrates unusual tonal voices with the standard big band/woodwind/percussion group. It is seamless and quite enjoyable. BUT MAKE SURE AND GET THE IMPORT VERSION. It boasts the original liner notes and, to my ears, a tape that is as least one generation closer to the master (maybe it is the original master). Bottom line is the import simply sounds fuller than the domestic release. It is definitely worth the few extra bucks to get it.

4 out of 5 stars Lounge with a Twist of Strange.......2001-09-13

I enjoy Lounge music and exotica especially when the conductor/arranger is trying to experiment with new high tech stereophonic or Hi Fi sound. Ok so its nothing new to us now but back then in 1958 it was the latest brake through in recording technology. And Esquivel was at the time trying to use this new tech to its fullest by arranging the music not only to present the music in a unique manner as any other arranger would, but also thinking about right channel, left channel, fade in, fade out, and also both channels. I always suggest to anyone, who purchases any music from this time period, "have you listened to it wearing headphones". And truly Esquivel's music is not fully appreciated until it is heard wearing headphones. The music and arrangements are beautiful and Esquivel's piano stylings are unreal. This and all of Esquivel's work is a must have for any Lounge music fans.

    5 out of 5 stars Mexican genius!.......2001-01-25

This CD is pretty darn good. The songs on it are, I suppose, what would normally be considered cheesy, easy-listening standards. But Esquivel puts a slightly odd twist on the arrangements and in doing so gives them a hard-to-define, vaguely uneasy edge. And as a pianist, the man really does seem, at times, to playing two keyboards at the same time. Versatile bloke or what?

This CD actually contains two separate original albums, The lusher "Other Worlds.." followed by the sparser "Four Corners.." Legend has it that after Esquivel had recorded the "Other Worlds..." album with a bigger orchestra, he found he had 90 minutes allotted studio time left and so recorded the "Four Corners..." album using a stripped down ensemble (none of your "our new record took, like, 3 years to make and is, like, based on Orwells "Animal Farm", man..." approach here). Another great point is the use Esquivel makes of stereo, (as part of RCA's contemporary Living Stereo series) In some ways, this predates the experimental methods that psychedelic pioneers would use in the studios in the late 60's, and all this adds further to the slightly skewed atmosphere this CD generates. The whole conspires together (as least in my head, anyway) to produce mental images of early sixties Neil Simon-scripted films, usually starring Jack Lemmon, and probably set in Noo York. (I don't know why, tho'. It just does)

So, want a slightly more off-the-wall, atmospheric easy listening? Then Esquivels yer man...A genius!

    5 out of 5 stars I simply loved it!.......2000-07-14

This is the compilation of 2 albums. The first one "Other worlds, other sounds", features a full sized orchestra with the piano played by Juan himself (He is a self -taught pianist). Its arrangements are quite lively, and the arrangements and use of instruments is outstanding and original. The second album, "4 corners of the world", seems at first glance to be totally different. It sounds in some passages as a Jazz quartet with a lot of percussions. You have to listen to it twice to fully appreciate the piano player's huge skills- at times it appears as if 2 pianos were playing, but it is only Juan by himself! I don't think there's another piano recording as this. If you're new to Esquivel, try this for starters- it's a good entry choice. If you think you get with one Esquivel recording a typical sample of his sound- wrong. Every album I own has a distinctive sound of its own, as if it were recorded with different bands, that have had Esquivel as the leader and arranger. If you like this, no doubt you'll be hooked with the rest of his albums

    4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2006-02-10

This is a low-fi recording of a sound collage event that took place in Los Angeles in 1965. A bunch of pre-recorded tapes were triggered and overlaid in real time using chance operations. This CD contains excerpts from the six hour performance.

Cage was sincere about process over product. He reportedly didn't listen to records (of his own music or anybody else's). I think this CD is fun, but since there's no intentionality to the sound constructions it's hard to grade. I think the last two tracks are the best blend of the source material (the same tapes keep popping up in different tracks) but if you appreciate media collage you'll enjoy the whole thing. Be warned, though, that this is not "soundboard" quality -- sounds more like somebody set a tape recorder in the middle of the room.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting mix of sounds. Musique Concrete at it's fines.......2002-01-07

I purchased this CD on the sole recommendation that it was by John Cage, an artist I had read a lot about in my studies in the field of Electronic and Experimental Music. This piece was mentioned often as a great example of the chance elements of sound-work.

It was a great influence on my work. And it will be on yours, too, if you just give it a chance!

5 out of 5 stars If you love John Lennon's "Revolution 9", you'll love this........1999-11-06

This type of music is an amazing trip through an audio landscape. After several plays of this disc, you'll find yourself making the most fascinating, improbable mental connections between different sound sources. A fun disc. It may even inspire you to create something similar.
