This soundtrack offers a pretty standard mix of new songs, old chestnuts, and excerpts from the score (here by John Debney). On the new tip, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle engage in an overheated battle of the divas on CD opener "Stir It Up," a bouncy piece of fluff that sounds more like Aretha Franklin circa "Freeway of Love" than classic soul. Other originals include Barenaked Ladies' "One Little Slip" (this movie's answer to Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" from Shrek 2) and the Cheetah Girls' peppy-but-bland cover of "Shake Your Tail Feather." But the real highlights are the songs performed by the movie's vocal cast, which includes Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Zach Braff, Steve Zahn, and Amy Sedaris. Their group cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don¹t Go Breaking My Heart," for instance, sounds as if half of them were drunk in the recording studio (and this is meant as a compliment.) Braff's a cappella version of "We Are the Champions" is smashing and Cusack and Zahn's take on the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" is completely demented. The kids will laugh; their parents will laugh even harder for completely different reasons. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

This 1963 session was Henderson's debut as a leader, and it introduced a strikingly individualistic tenor saxophonist, with a distinctively muscular sound and approach, as well as a talent for finding a personal route through the dominant tenor styles of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. At the time of the session, Henderson worked regularly in a quintet with the veteran trumpeter Kenny Dorham, and the two enjoyed a special chemistry apparent on several Blue Note recordings under their individual names. One unusual facet is the hard-bop take on the then emerging bossa nova, apparent in the first recording of Dorham's now standard "Blue Bossa," on which Henderson's thoughtful construction is apparent, and the saxophonist's own coiling Latin tune, "Recorda Me." Pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Pete LaRoca provide more than solid support for a date that's as often reflective as it is forceful. --Stuart BroomerAlbum Description
Page One introduced the jazz world to the unusually mature and original young tenor saxophonist, Joe Henderson. "Recorda Me" & "Blue Bossa" have become jazz classics for their mix of Brazilian rhythms with Hard Bop muscle.Customer Reviews:

The most emotional Blue Note Record from start to finish!.......2003-07-25
For a jazz newcomer, the songs to lookout for are Kenny's Blue Bossa and Joe's Recorda Me, but don't be fooled. If you buy this record, it won't become one of those records you pull out on occassion to hear 2 songs. You will immediately take to the beauty of the remaining four, especially the last two songs.
Joe Henderson was Blue Note's most requested tenor sideman during the 60s. While his playing evolved (and objectively improved) later on, there is a certain richness in his playing present on his blue note records, that is not always there on his Milestone gigs (while I adore those too.) This album MUST be more acknowledge as a plateau in jazz compostion. It would be impossible to improve upon the record. Not too many are in the same league...Kind Of Blue, Moanin', Love Supreme, Unity, Hubtones, Speak No Evil, Song For My Father, Sweet Rain, Out To Lunch, Saxophone Collosus, and probably about 20 others....but what does this have that others don't?...
...this record is the only record that I believe you can put on and listen from beginning to end, and be consistantly enthralled without one moment of hesitation or impatience for the next soloist to take stage. It is perfect. Every jazz listener who does not own it is doing themselves a major disservice. It sums up the brilliance of the probably the greatest tenor of the past 35 years. I miss you Joe!
-Dave
Sheer Brilliance.......2000-09-06
Even greater than the two tunes which grab the most attention (Blue Bossa and Homestretch). Are Kenny Dorham's La Mesha and Joe Henderson's Recorda Me and Jinrikisha. McCoy is a genious of accompaniment and feel as well as a Brilliant soloist and really shines on these three tunes. Lastly I feel obliged to mention the always phenominal drumming of Pete La Roca. This is a must have for anyone serious about jazz as a listener or player. Especially important to have for a musician. Don't bother with it if you are one who classifies jazz as Kenny G's duotones and slaughtering of great jazz standards.

Disney management has often been accused of sacrificing the long-term quality of its animated features for the short-term pay-off of direct-to-video sequels to its middling modern successes. But as this soundtrack-sequel to the studio's 1998 quasi-feminist Chinese folk-tale proves, the music of such ventures can often compare favorably with that of the original. This new collection's buoyant "(I Wanna Be) Like Other Girls" is offered up in two versions: A more traditional stage musical take and an antic cover by Atomic Kitten that's pure teeny-bopping Disney Channel fodder. That's Harvey Fierstein lending his gravelly pipes to the equally spry redux of "A Girl Worth Fighting For," while the decidedly more angelic pipes of Kiwi teen soprano phenom Hayley Westenra grace the elegant "Here Beside Me" by Joel McNeely and Kate Light. Selections from McNeely's deft, emotionally understated orchestral score flesh out the collection. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Alright...........2005-11-30
I wasn't impressed, but I did enjoy it.
Terrible movie, but good soundtrack!.......2005-11-03
The first song in this movie was "Lesson Number One", and it was my favourite. I love the choirs of children, it was perfect! It made me recognize the children's choirs in the church. Lea Salonga's voice was so sweet, and it's my favourite style! "A girl worth fighting for" came up in this soundtrak but it was remixed, and most of the lyrics were changed. Although it was very different from the original one, I love it. Because it gave me a good feeling, and I felt that it was more humorous than the original one. Another song named "Like other girls" is one of my favourites. Mei's voice was a little strange but very cute. The three princesses seemed to be crazy, but I could feel their emotion that they were eager of freedom and very unsetisfied with the arranged marrige. I felt very happy that they found their love and happiness by the end.
This was a movie which was so terrible but with perfect songs I have ever seen!
good cd.......2005-07-14

4. girl worth fighting for (redux)- 5/5. i love this song too, its funny
5. here beside me- 5/5. the first time i listened to it, i thought it was "ok", but now i think its great!
6. (i wanna be) like other girls (atomic kitten)- 5/5. i thought it was a great version of the original.
the next five songs, which are scores, are also very good!
overall, this cd was well worth my money, and the movie was even better!

It's all here.......2006-04-14
For the long works, the Piano Concerto is attention-grabbing and beautiful. The Symphonic Dances and the Norwegian Dances are lively and tremendously extraordinary. The lesser-known Symphony in C Minor should be more recognized, as it is as powerful as other symphonies, like Mahler's first and Beethoven's sixth. For the short works, In Autumn and Landkjenning can be best described as sheer masterpieces.
For Peer Gynt, it is good to hear the first digitally-recorded authentic version. The suite version is just not enough for that full listening experience. NOTE: if you want to buy a Peer Gynt that includes the complete dialogue, I would recommend conductor Ole Kristian Ruud's version with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; the dialogue lengthens the 90-minute work by two hours.
To know the rest is to listen to them straight through. All the works in this box set (especially the Piano Concerto) should be a possession for all Grieg-lovers.
A+
An excellent box-set.......2003-08-30
Neeme Jarvi is very good.
In first CD, there is a powerful performance of Piano Concerto by Zilberstein. She is also great in F.Liszt recordings (at DG Classics). In second CD, works for string orchestra (including, famous Holberg Suite) to be found. And in 3rd and 4th CDs, marvellous recordins of Peer Gynt and Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd, the Crusader)to be found. This works are the first recordings of complete score. Still, speakers to be present at Peer Gynt. And Funeral March for R. Nordraak is very influence in 4th CD.The wind ensemble of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is very good...
In 5th CD, there is an unknown work by Grieg: Symphony in C-minor. This work written in early period, but didn't perfomed often. Still, this work's name is "Forbidden Symphony"...And then, a majestic work "Land-Sighting" to be found. This is very successful choral work of composer and he written in a heavenly tone:E Major...And then, there is an unknown work again, an incomplete opera: "Olav Trygvason"... Grieg written this work on a libretto by his friend, Bjornson (a famous poet of Norway), but he could finish first act...
And in last CD, there are other vocal works, and his beatiful work: "Old Norwegian Melody with Variations". And then, 5 Songs to be found. This songs originally written for voice and piano (like other many songs) but he later orchestrated these works. And the first song "The First Meeting" was discovered in 80's and still, they used a new edition, published from new founded manuscript, so this is the first recording of Grieg's beatiful song.
In other words: this box-set is excellent and Highly recommended.
Wonderful recordings, slightly marred by lack of texts.......2003-04-09
This is now the fourth or fifth release for some of these CDs, first came the individual volumes, then the full price box, then releases on budget DG Classikon, and now a Collector's Edition box at half the price, but sadly minus the texts to CDs 2,3 and 6. This won't matter so much in the orchestral songs, CD6, where the texts to Bergtekne, Bergliot etc. are available in other releases or on the Lieder web page, but CDs 2 and 3 are currently the only complete recording of Peer Gynt and the sung or spoken texts are not available outside sheet music collections. Personally (as someone more interested in the vocal music than the orchestral) I would try and locate the original volumes, but at least DG has given those who don't feel the extra expense is justified a cheaper option.
Further recommendation: Anne Sofie von Otter's recording of the Haugtussa song cycle.

The composers Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu might not be the names that first spring to mind when love songs are mentioned, yet this fascinating collection gives us a taste of what delights we have been missing. They range from seven Moravian folk songs, collected by Janácek at the turn of the century, to songs written by Martinu in the U.S. in 1942. There's also early Martinu--including songs he collected in Slovakia in 1920--plus the world-premiere recording of Songs for a Friend of My Country, a cycle he wrote in France in 1940 on his way to America. All of these songs are of interest in giving us another aspect of each composer's work; most have much more to offer. Many are achingly lovely, especially those by Dvorák--including his Op. 2, a reworking of four songs from a cycle he had written almost 20 years earlier, and Love Songs, a revision of eight songs from the same cycle. "Good night, my darling," from his 1886 cycle In Folk Tone, is worth the price of this CD alone. Czech mezzo Magdalena Kozená, who put together the program, sings with pure, attractive tone. Graham Johnson is her excellent accompanist. --Richard FawkesCustomer Reviews:
On the Subject of Intelligent and Sensitive Recitals.......2005-05-19
LOVE SONGS is a tastefully selected panorama of lesser-known songs by Kozená's fellow countrymen (Czech) Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu. And while many of the Dvorák and Janácek songs have been occasionally heard in recitals, the Martinu "Songs for a Friend of My Country", an exquisitely beautiful work written in 1940, here receives its World Premiere recording. Kozená's voice is in prime condition for these songs and she is ably accompanied by pianist Graham Johnson. The special flavor of these Slavic emotions and songs has rarely been so well captured.
But over and above the beauty of Kozená's performance of these neglected masterpieces shines the glow of her sensitive programming. Recordings such as these are rare and should be included in the libraries of those who appreciate the lieder genre. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 05

A stunning burst onto the world stage.......2001-12-17
Kozena's voice is sheer delight. She does have resonances in her voice which are reminiscent of her compatriot, Lucia Popp, but is certainly a mezzo - although she has chosen her repertoire well so we hear no strain at the top. Her low resonances are delightful and consistent with her head voice. To compare Kozena's voice to that of the late diva (Popp), it is more pure, more consistent in tone from top to bottom, and doesn't have so much of the `squeezey' quality which Popp used to great effect in evincing the passion of her characters. Kozena can empty her voice of vibrato or let it out rich and full, and uses all her vocal resources to great effect in contrasting the individual songs. She has astoundingly mature lieder-singer's technique for such a young singer.
This recording rightly won a Gramophone award this year. Kozena deserves all the accolades she receives for this - doubtless all listeners will develop their own favourites from these delightful miniatures.
Wonderful songs, and a singer with great potential.......2000-10-08
