Editorial Reviews
Dave Steinmeyer, Trombonist / former director of the Airmen of Note
Stan's trombone playing as well as the ensemble and other soloists are performed to the highest standards.
Product Description
It's all about time. The "big band sound" is tied inexorably to the 1940s, yet it's still alive, vibrant, and in lockstep with 2003. On "Stratford Blue" the Stan Bann Big Band takes four tunes with strong, distinct links to the big band era and shows that they are solid pieces of music that make the transition into the 21st century with flair and style. The balance of the album runs the stylistic gamut from swing to latin to reggae influenced jazz. The fresh facelifts of these great songs along with Stan's innovative original compositions and arrangements (the contemporary update of "Tangerine", for example) create an infectious hallmark sound that stays in your ears and heart long after the stereo is turned off. Trombonist Phil Wilson also contributes a solo on the title cut.
