Unusual collection, superbly performed.......2003-04-27

It took me a while to get used to Street Songs. So if you buy a copy, you may have to stick with it for a couple of playings, before you are able to appreciate it.

Rossini went to a performance of Wagner's opera, Lohengrin, and said afterwards: I don't think you can fully appreciate Lohengrin on first hearing, and I certainly do not intend to hear it a second time! But please, do listen several times. It *is* worth it!

The combination of marimba and vocal group is unusual, but effective. You also get a couple of solos from Evelyn Glennie and 2 performances by the King's Singers without percussion accompaniment.

Street Songs is split up on the album to create an interesting program. But you can, of course program your compact disk player to hear it all at once. My favourite part of this set of songs is the interesting arrangement of Oranges and Lemons [which is mostly not the familiar tune, but it does give it a nod].

There are some great moments in Klatzow's Return of the Moon. I also enjoyed hearing the group singing Lalela Zulu. A terrific, lively set of pieces.

We have listened to The King's Singers since their first album appeared. Although there is not a single original member remaining, I think this is still identifiably of that original oeuvre. It is definitely reminiscent of some early King's Singers classical recordings.

Recommended for those who like listening to something challenging. If you have only heard their popular CDs [such as Beatles Connection or Good Vibrations] you will find this very different.

Street Songs is a beautiful, thought-provoking, and ultimately fascinating album. On the first listen, I admit I wasn't sure how I felt on the whole about the album, but I kept listening, and I'm very happy I did. I originally bought Street Songs because I heard the lads sing "Horizons" in a concert, and thought it was one of the most achingly beautiful pieces of music I had heard in a long time- and I was right. Watch for the unresolved chord at the end of the last verse, and Nigel's breathtaking opening and closing melody. From the beginning I loved "Horizons," so it was a question of listening to the other tracks. How can anyone not catch on to the infectious joy of "Lalela Zulu"? The set of children's songs interspersed throughout the album are noteworthy as well, especially the haunting final song. The pairing of Evelyn Glennie with the King's Singers was brilliant- the songs they perform together obtain an often unearthly sound well worth a listen, as with her solo tracks.
One last note- Street Songs was tenor Paul Phoenix's first recording with the group. Listeners familiar with the Singers' next album, "Fire~Water" will be able to sense that at this point, the group wasn't entirely settled into their new sound. But let it be said: this is not enough to detract from the overall sound of the album, which is excellent. Only by comparison is this discernable. Street Songs is an album I recommend to many of my musical friends, if they're ready to try something a little different, a little fun, a little new, a little unsettling, and in the end, very satisfying.

It can ,and should ,be more deep.......2000-06-11

In recent years the repertoire (even members) of King singers seem to be more and more various. Well,this's ok, but at the same time it's more important to keep a still high-standard performance. And I find it's really hard in recent cds of king singers. For this CD, the harmony is nearly perfect, but the music can be more deep. When I retrospect those great cds recorded by king singer's, for example, the english madrigals and beatles connection, I feel a bit unsatisfied with this one. It sounds sweet, with some excellent new songs (Lalela Zulu, Poor Roger, etc) and good percussion by Evelyn Glennie, but it can ,and should ,be more deep.

A great re-issue worthy of this great singing legend........2003-05-23

It was always my dream to have Kay Thompson's early Brunswick and Victor recordings in good sound quality. Now it finally materialized in this magnificent re-issue produced by great record producer Ted Ono and his masterful sound engineer Doug Pomeroy, who's also responsible for some incredible Mosaic sets. The remaining of the CD consists of Thompson's wonderfully entertaining performances from radio shows and film soundtrack, and the sound quality once again is superb. One of the most exiting and entertaining CDs I purchased in the recent years.

There's no way you can squeeze four decades' worth of music onto two CDs and make it exhaustive; nonetheless, Men Are Like Streetcars provides an overview of an important and vibrant subgenre within the blues: female blues singers. This CD is an excellent sample of some of the blues' greatest divas, from pioneer belters like Billie Holiday and Victoria Spivey; to guitarist Memphis Minnie, who was more than capable of keeping up with the boys; to reigning queens like Koko Taylor and Etta James, who have continued recording and performing well into the '90s. While this is certainly not an exhaustive collection of women blues singers, I was impressed by the selection. Given that the time period covers more than forty years (on only 2 discs!), this compilation is much better than expected. The liner notes are fantastic and the art work is great. An essential item to add to your collection. Also, a great gift ... I have bought several copies for friends.

Ye GODS, what a voice! What a singer!.......2002-08-19

We have George London here in opera and Broadway. Also, what we have is a feast for the ears and, for those with computers, a feast for the eyes. This CD has the librettos for the selections and photos from London's illustrious career. And the sound! The transfers are impeccable, giving the listener the experience of being right there, with the singer and the orchestra all around. Don't worry, it plays just like a normal audio CD in ordinary CD players.

George London's voice was incredibly powerful and passionate. He was a bass-baritone, but the sound was as black as marble and as brilliant as the sun glinting off of chrome. I was surprised that he sang Broadway songs, but more so to hear them done so well. Turns out, from what I understand, that he started out in that genre, then moved on to opera. This was not the kind of voice that sounded like the common man, so if you like the `non-singing' way with this music, avoid London's versions at all costs. If, however, you love wit, charm, and clear-as-crystal diction, give him a try.

The Wagner selections catch him at his best, with a colossal version of Wotan's Farewell and an utterly searing and soul-burning version of Die Frist Ist Um from Wagner's Fliegende Hollander. This is power here, with the characters' human frailties and faults thrust out, right into our faces. I cannot recommend this album highly enough. Actually, this series, The Singers, is a treasure, and this album is one of its jewels.

Its a shame.......2005-01-24

I listen to this, and I think, "This cast is pretty good" Its that they completey changed the music. Nothing here is familiar. Some people like that, but like one reviewer said" Its not broke, don't fix it" Even the techno sounding shows at least sound familiar. When Perpare Yee comes on the guy who sings Judas sounds really nice, then it goes into a totally different beat, which make no sense. Its a shame that the singers effort is being wasted by the music, which just sucks.

wow this is an aweful CD. If something isn't broke don't fix it and Steven Schwarts original soundtrack is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard and this one is just aweful. It changes the sounds and takes everything away from the show.

Godspell rip off.......2001-07-01

This studio cast recording is a knock off. It "borrows" the techno arrangements from the 1994 UK tour. It is a copy that is not as good as the UK Tour cd. It is also marketed under the title of C.C. Productions in other countries. I would stay away from this one unless you are a serious collector.

Okay, this was okay, the music for the play is amazing but it really has to be done right, you know? I sung by my side and that song is pretty hard to screw up cause its so obvious its supossed to be a serious mellow song, But some of the other ones, we were just better.
