Editorial Reviews
When these nine sides were cut in February 1955, trumpeter Clifford Brown was not even 25 years old, but he'd already emerged as jazz's greatest trumpeter this side of Miles Davis. Whereas Davis made his mark through conception, composition, and cool tones, Brown was a blowing, blaring, blistering fire who navigated chord changes without a second's pause. This record will give listeners plenty of chance to marvel at his fleet improvisations and sharp tone, which remarkably never lost its fullness at any speed. The m.o. of the quintet was pretty well set at this point: reinvigorated standards augmented by crafty introductions and taken at full bore; sprite originals with complex melodies; and an urgency unmatched in jazz before or since. Pianist Richie Powell and tenor Harold Land admirably keep pace with the leaders. --Marc Greilsamer

Great Music.......2007-01-14
Essential, and not just because of Clifford.......2006-11-09
"A Study in Brown" isn't a perfect session, but it would be hard to fault not just Clifford but the equally sublime Harold Land. Perhaps the man never got his due because his tenor is so completely in synch with Clifford's horn that the two speak as a single voice during the ensemble sections, uncannily so during the unison passages. It's not just the tightness but the phrasing and "contouring" of their lines. In fact, it's Land, more than Clifford, whose attention to dynamics and the "swelling" of phrases assures that the ensemble choruses take on a breathing, living quality (subtleties such as this, incidentally, would be lost, or "flattened out," were this a Blue Note rather than Emarcy recording).
Land has the unenviable task of following Brown on most of the solos, and he's invariably up to the challenge. His fluid technique, purposeful melodic ideas, and expressive use of dynamics constitute a musical voice that is no less inimitable and personal than Clifford's. The primary anticlimax occurs during the Richie Powell piano solos that follow Land's inventions. On "Land's End," Harold takes not only the first but the best of the solos. On a couple of the tunes (e.g. "Take the A Train") the disappointment is that he's given less solo time than Clifford.
The trumpet-tenor sax format of hundreds of jazz combos and thousands of recordings certainly was overdone, soon becoming tiresomely limited and repetitious. But not with this pair. The combination of Brown and Land provides a study in colors and textures that's all but inexhaustible.

Study In Greatness..........2006-01-06
Richie Powell-in 1956 ,in an automobile accident. 'Study in Brown' , one of a handful of albums any serious jazz fan should own, starts off fast with The Brown-Roach Quintet blowin' away
the standard,'Cherokee' and ends with a unique version of 'Take The A Train'.Richie Powell, often described a "Bud's younger brother" composed the swingin' tune 'Jacqui' for this album and
puts to rest any notion that, although he is often referred to as
"Bud's(Powell)younger brother",he is no "second-rater".I love Harold Land's sound on tenor sax-and his composition,'Land's End'
and..this really is one of the ultimate, historic shorlived groups, which wouldn't be complete without George Morrow on bass and Max Roach-who survived it all-on drums.
Essential recordings.......2005-04-05
Brilliant recordings that every modern jazz fan should have. Although everything on this CD is fantastic, highlights include "Sandu," a marvelous blues composition by Brownie, and the standard "If I Love Again," which is taken way up tempo and burns! "Cherokee" is also done very fast, with excellent results. "Gerkin for Perkin" is also a blues, but somewhat different - it's a great theme. Clifford Brown made some major jazz statements during his all-too-brief life, and many of them can be found on this CD. Highly recommended.

Potentially misleading title but hard to go wrong........2007-05-30
Two of the tracks are worth the admission price. "April" is the third take of the tune leading off the "Basin Street" session and is arguably better than the master take. Whereas the original is pretty much no-nonsense straight-ahead bebop with Roach driving the troops with a heavy ride cymbal, this one is more sportive, with Rollins playing with motifs and leaving a bit of breathing space, perhaps the reason Richie Powell sounds more relaxed and Roach decides to attend to his snares and toms as much as his cymbals. The other track is a previously unreleased take of "Blues Walk" from the date "Clifford Brown and Max Roach." If the master is better than this out-take, I'm not sure I'd want to hear it. This one raises the bar high enough, with a Land solo that should be enough to scare any saxophonist with ears.
The contrast between Rollins and Land, the two tenors represented about equally on this collection, is quite instructive. Sonny undoubtedly brought to the group more fire power for the concert and club dates, and more spontaneity and playfulness in the recording studio. But the ensemble is tighter with Land, who also delivers those letter-perfect, cleanly-articulated, supremely-logical solos each time out. Yet even with Land the group too frequently falls into a predictable head-solo-head pattern. When Land went to the West Coast and linked up with Curtis Counce and Carl Perkins, he would briefly be part of an ensemble that had few if any equals. It all simply came together--the writing and attention to detail, the ensemble sound, and the solos--representing a musical apex for jazz quintets in the mainstream, post-bop tradition.
As usual, everybody's favorite trumpet player is in peak form throughout, guaranteed not to disappoint.
Study In Greatness...Again.......2006-01-06
with 'Study in Brown' with another all-time classic,'More Study In Brown'.This one kicks off with a Latin-flavored,'I'll Remember April' and Harold Land(left group because of family/travel issues) and Sonny Rollins share duties on tenor sax.The exchange between Harold Land and Clifford Brown in 'The Blues Walk' to end the album leaves you hoping for an encore.Unfortunately,Brown and pianist Richie Powell, died tragically in an automobile crash in June,1956,which moved Quincy Jones wo write in 'Downbeat Magazine'(August 22,1956):"..Clifford's self-assuredness in his playing reflected the mind and soul of a blossoming young artist who would have rightfully taken his place next to Charlie Parker,Dizzy Gillespie,Miles Davis and other leaders in Jazz. The record companies owe it to the future of Jazz to make available every possible fragment of the beautiful musical gifts Clifford gave the world with unbounded love..."

Pyotr + Iona = Revelation........2000-04-19
I usually listen to the classical music station when I'm working, mainly because it doesn't distract me -- either the music is so familiar that it's easy to tune out ( Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Handel ) or it all just blends together into an aural soup ( Bruckner, Sibelius, Schumann. ) But secretly I must have been more receptive than I gave myself credit for, because tonight when they played Iona Brown's magnificent recording of Tchaikovsky's Souvenirs of Florence, my heart leapt into my throat and stayed there through the next half hour without budging so much as a micrometer. When it was over, I came out of my stupor only long enough to take a deep breath. It seems I had momentarily forgotten the need for oxygen.
Anyone who has listened to classical music with any regularity will know how rare these epiphanies can be; everything good seems to have been cataloged, canonized and duly implanted in elevator sound systems, never to thrill again. Well here is something almost unheard of that ranks with the best chamber works you'd care to name, and exceeds most of Tchaikovsky's established favorites in beauty, consistency, and image-weaving ( if I were making a film of War and Peace, this would play softly underneath Natasha's cusp-of-womanhood carriage ride. ) Both the piece and the conductor are huge discoveries, and those interested in starting a Tchaikovsky collection would do well to start here -- that way you'll avoid those strident, desperate symphonies.
