Django Reinhardt was both the first great jazz-guitar soloist and the first European jazz musician to have a significant influence on American musicians. Just as Earl Hines had found a way to transfer Louis Armstrong's assertive solo style to the piano, Reinhardt did it with the acoustic guitar, mixing inventive melodic improvisation with a decorative gypsy-guitar idiom and vigorous rhythm. He did it most often with the Hot Club of France, a quintet including violinist Stephane Grappelli, two rhythm guitarists, and a bassist that created its own distinctive style, a lightly propulsive mix that was an ideal setting for Django's mix of drive, invention, and charm. The recordings here range from 1936 to 1948 and showcase Reinhardt with the Hot Club, clarinetist Hubert Rostaing, and trumpeter Rex Stewart. Included is a brilliant solo performance of his "Naguine." It's an excellent introduction to one of the most original voices in jazz of the period, to a fine composer as well as a unique guitarist. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Django Reinhardt.......2007-05-15

This man is brilliant. However, after listening, it is not my style of jazz...which does not reflect on this man's genius.

5 out of 5 stars A definite must have!.......2007-05-13

Django is truly a legend for early jazz. His guitar style is unmatched by any other guitarist. What makes him even more unique is that he lost two finders in a fire saving his family, and instead of quiting, he found a style where he could play chords and scales with 2 fingers that other guitarists struggle doing with 4.
This CD is my favorite. It compiles a lot of his best work and the sound quality is really good. Some of his other recordings are rather rough due to the technology back in the 1930s, but this CD is mastered well.
I bought this again after I lost my original while on vacation. This CD will always be in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2007-02-28

This is an excellent sampler of the work of great Gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. The collection has crisp sound and is full of great performances. Besides having a dazzling technique, Reinhardt swung with wild abandon and played from the heart. The selections included in this set are nothing short of timeless classics.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-01-30

Obviously a little dated and if you are not used to listening to this kind of music may be a little tough to get through the entire CD in one setting. However, if you appreciate find playing by a skillful, pioneering musician this one is well worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars One word: WOW!!!!.......2006-12-26

I first heard of Django Reinhardt from the admiration of Ardvit in the movie "Swing Kids" (great movie if you haven't seen it). This CD is amazing. It is especially wowing to hear it knowing that Django played without the use of two of his fingers, which were tragically injured early in his life. I have often been concerned about the musical quality of older recordings, but this CD has absolutely no signs of distortion or lack of quality. First rate recording. Django plays amazingly quick and clear rifts that are astounding. He is joined in many of the recordings by Stephane Grappelli on the violin. Grappelli was one of the few that could match Django, and they play off each other wonderfully.

I highly recommend this CD to any lover of Jazz and/or Swing music.

Anyone who loves the guitar, and who enjoys discussing great players, simply must include Django Reinhardt in their library and their discussions. "Quintette du Hot Club de France: 25 Classics 1934-1940" is a great place to start. His speed, inventiveness, musicality, and emotion are unsurpassed by any other guitar player from any other genre or any other era. And on top of that, you get the added bonus of Stephane Grappelli's violin playing. Buy it, listen to it, and be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars Quintette du Hot Club de France: 25 Classics 1934-1940.......2005-08-22

If you're into Django Reinhardt and his music, this may be the single most all-inclusive CD of his works available, containing most of the tunes he became best known for performing. You probably will not need another.

The one critique I have is, that for some inexplicable reason, the version of Limehouse Blues on this CD is noisier (hissy) than another copy of the song I have, though it is note-for-note the same version and, I'm pretty sure, the same performance. All the other tunes appear to have been processed for higher quality- a minor drawback; an excellent CD.

5 out of 5 stars this is a good collection.......2005-04-27

If you're just going to buy a 1-disc Django CD, this is a pretty good one to start with. Lots of great songs on this disc. But you can spend just a little more money and get a more complete 4-disc set called "The Classic Early Recordings in Chronological Order volume 1." (I haven't listened to volume 2 yet, but I know volume 1 is good.) Anyway, it's hard to go wrong with Django Reinhardt.

This wonderful five-disc box is an indispensable collection of prewar, prebop jazz that belongs in the company of your finest Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman sets. Technically, this isn't a true box set--it merely collects five single-disc compilations under one slipcase--but it is infinitely rewarding nonetheless. Disheartened by what he thought were sonically subpar Reinhardt collections, Ted Kendall undertook an ambitious mission to find the best original sources for this classic material and then meticulously remastered them. He wisely opted to leave in some of the surface noise to maintain the clarity and integrity of the music. And what glorious, jubilant music it is! Dating to the very first Quintet of the Hot Club of France sessions in September 1934 (before they'd even established that moniker), the collection includes all the landmark recordings Reinhardt made for Ultraphone, Decca (its English and French labels), and HMV up through the Quintet's 1939 breakup on the eve of World War II. Reinhardt's guitar work is spirited and adventurous throughout--lightning-quick runs, insistent rhythm work, and hybrid "riffs" that seem to split the difference. Nearly all the cuts feature the elegant but vivacious violin work of his most famous foil, Stephane Grappelli, who certainly deserves co-billing on the set. The way the two feed off each other's energy is magical. Despite their well-documented personality clashes, the twosome remains perhaps the most synergistic in jazz history, constantly engaging in their incredible cat-and-mouse games. Often overlooked are the songwriting talents of the two musicians, who contributed several standards to the jazz canon. Though mostly focused on the Quintet recordings, the set detours for such oddities as a pair of solo Reinhardt cuts from 1937 and collaborations with Coleman Hawkins. Simply delightful from beginning to end. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful - for the Purists among us.......2007-07-02

Django Reinhardt's music is a study in Jazz influence, improvisation and sheer exuberance. These recordings take you through his early years and maturity as an astonishing guitarist. If you understand guitar and what it took for him to play as he did, your appreciation for the technical virtuosity cannot but respond to his work.

The digital re-masterings themselves faithfully reproduce the original sounds, complete with all of the surface noise that attended those early 78's. For the purist this is no problem because the desire is to not have any of the music also filtered. For those who are into casual listening or background music while you drive, especially if you listen at high volume, you might find it a bit distracting.

One of the most delightful aspects of Reinhardt's group is Stephan Grappely's Jazz violin. We don't think of the violin as a jazz instrument very often, but these folks made it work wonderfully in group. Reinhardt shared the lead often with his band and it gives the music a diversity which enables sustained listening without boredom.

Good group, good selections, good music.

5 out of 5 stars Django Reinhardt , Classic Early Recordings.......2007-04-12

Like the Supreme Court Justice opined about obscenity [I'm informed],
he said if he saw it he would know what it was. I have sonically seen
Django and I know what JAZZ GENIUS IS!! He and his consorts swing from
the beginning to the end every time they do a tune. Being an un-recon-
structed Stan Kenton fan of some 60 + years, I recognize that except
for some Shorty Rogers charts and particularly "Stompin' At The Savoy"
by Bill Holman, Django could have made even the Kenton band swing! How
he could swing so hard with a wounded wing is an education. If you dig
jazz or think you might, this is the ONE to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Tout Sweet.......2007-01-08

Imagine yourself luxuriously pouring time down the drain in some obscure cafe, contemplating the crumbling Parisian skyline through an absinthe-induced fog, puffing on a Gauloise sans filtre securely plugged into an ivory cigarette holder. At the adjoining table a taciturn J.P. Sartre is cheating at solitaire. Out back, on the cobblestone street worn smooth by centuries of horse hooves, Gertrude Stein is rebuilding the transmission of an American Jeep. This is your sound track.

The Classic Early Recordings of Django Reinhardt is one of the best deals in the entire Amazon jungle. From sound quality to song selection to sheer quantity, this superb 5-CD set recreates a whole environment; it transports you to another place and time. Perhaps the only flaw is that Stephane Grappelly does not get equal billing - the real magic of this music is found in the interplay between these two giants.

It is tempting to say that Reinhardt was the Hendrix of his generation; it is perhaps more accurate to say that Hendrix was the Reinhardt of his generation. Django Reinhardt, (believed by some to be the best guitarist ever), belongs in the same pantheon with Art Tatum and Charlie Parker - he exhibited almost Faustian brilliance, worlds beyond other players. Green bananas are advised to remember that everything Reinhardt played - he actually played - these recordings were made long before technology took the place of talent.

Reinhardt's style is extremely athletic, he strums as if he is trying to rip the strings off. Lightning-quick riffs are tossed off almost thoughtlessly, creating a vibrant, racing energy. Grappelly's elegant, lyrical violin is the perfect counterpoint, where Reinhardt drives, Grappelly soars. As staggeringly fast as Reinhardt is, Grappelly never strains to keep up, his work here establishes him as heavyweight champ of jazz violin. This music is relentlessly joyful, upbeat, and sweet. While it is always possible to analyze it for sheer technical virtuosity, the temptation to fall under its magical spell is far greater. Absolutely enchanting.

This is a first for us to hear Django play guitar.A simply wonderful set of his recordings. We love his way of playing. So expressive and uplifting and up to date.He is very accomplished musician. "Ted Kendall" (sound engineer) did a fine job of restoring of original recordings. The CD and case like new. Arrived on time. Seller highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars if you have the mosaic and you're wondering..........2006-05-05

it may have been pointed out another reviewer, but:
if you have the mosaic swing/hmv set and you're concerned about overlap, go ahead and get this set. there's only about a disc and a half of overlap. 3 1/2 hours' worth of non-duplicates, of sessions which preceded those in the mosaic and, even better, the complete paris and london decca sides from '38-39. restoration-wise, these are a little noisier than the mosaic, but also sweeter top end. different approach, i like both. pure joy.

5 out of 5 stars elegant and vibrant.......2005-09-09

This music is pure enjoyment. The joyfull afternoon in paris; you can tap your feet while watching people from a sidewalk cafe. This was the first CD by Stephane Grapelli I bought. I knew of him and his association with Django Reinhardt but never explored their music before. Stephane swings, he can be lyrical, witty and full of grace. The sound of his violing just lightens up the room. You might be surprised by bassist Eberhard Weber, if you know him from his later solo ECM efforts, and his solid ability to do the "walking". This music passes every test, whether you listen attentively, feel like dancing or doing the ironing.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant Jazz.......2005-05-18

True Grappelli fans know the various phases of Stephane's career. The early years with Django, the post-Django era where Stephane played mostly in hotels and restaurants with jazz combos featuring drums and piano, and the post-1973 era where he gained international recognition playing with guitarists again like Martin Taylor, Diz Dizley, and Mark Fosset sans drums and piano. This album was recorded in 1971 and fits into the second category.

If you're into the "nightclub" Stephane then you'll love this album. It reminds me of the lineup he had during WWII with George Shearing on piano. Marc Hemmeler does a great job on piano assisted by Kenny Clare on drums and Eberhard Weber on upright bass. This is a studio recording as opposed to the live recordings which were so numerous in the post-1973 era, and is therefore a bit more on the polished and structured side. Those of us who love to hear him improvise with wreckless abandon as he tended to do in a live performance can't help but notice that something is missing here, and yet the results are so tasteful you really feel guilty for complaining.

My favorite cut is probably #7 - Manoir De Mes Reves/Daphne which were composed by Django Reinhardt. This is vintage Stephane, starting off with a slow, melodic piano accompaniment that transforms into a swinging tribute to a lady friend of the Hot Club Quintet.

Picture yourself in a smoky jazz club around 1970 with your sophisticated friends soaking in the avant-garde artistry of a musical legend while downing a few cocktails and discussing world events. No music would be more fitting than the contents of this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Remind me about my paris afternoon.......2001-06-19

This is a great CD for weekend afternoon. It always reminds me about my relaxing and excellent Paris afternoon in an outdoor coffe shop or Cafe. If you have visited Paris, definitely enjoy this CD. If you have not got to Paris, listening this CD will get you excited about your future Paris vocation.

5 out of 5 stars "C'est Si Bon!".......1999-08-20

I really like Jazz Music, and one of my favorite Jazz musicians are Stephane Grappelli, who as far as I know was the "King of Jazz Violin." I listened to his album, Afternoon in Paris, and some of the songs such as Autumn Leaves, at it's speed get me in a jazz/swing dancing mood. Some other songs, such as Misty, sooth and relax me. If you are a jazz fan, and you have not yet listened to this album, rush to the nearest record store and buy it-immediately! "Ce Est Une GRAND Album!!!!!"

    5 out of 5 stars A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08

"The true mission of the violin is to imitate the accents of the human voice, a noble mission that has earned for the violin the glory of being called the king of instruments." ~ Charles-Auguste De Bériot ~

Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.

These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.

One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.

My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."

My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."

The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."

The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."

Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)

    A musical treat.

Cajun patois has long figured heavily in the music of Ann Savoy--with her husband Marc, the Savoy-Doucet Band, the Magnolia Sisters, and Linda Ronstadt--but this jazzier effort puts a different sort of French twist on her artistry. The result is continental gypsy swing in the tradition of the Hot Club, with the sprightly interplay of guitarist Tom Mitchell and violinist Kevin Wimmer recalling Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. The is mood music for a variety of moods: saucy on "If You Don't I Know Who Will," dramatically bittersweet on "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered," jaunty on the uptempo finale, "The Way You Look Tonight." Among the French material she interprets, listeners will recognize "Ces Petites Choses" as "These Foolish Things." Savoy compensates with the warmth of her conversational phrasing for whatever her voice lacks in range and power. --Don McLeese

      4 out of 5 stars Irresistible........2007-06-17

With its new arrangements, and some inspired choices of material (notably the theme from "The Godfather"), this relatively young band gives a new twist to the perennially popular sound of gypsy guitar star Django Reinhardt and his groups.
Evan Perri may not be anything like as dazzling a guitarist as his hero, but where this CD scores is in recreating the laid-back French vibe of Reinhardt's best recordings.
Much of the credit has to go to clarinettist Dave Bennett and accordionist Julien Labro.
Best tracks: "Belleville" and The Godfather".

4 out of 5 stars well performed but redundant.......2007-04-10

"Hot Club of Detroit" is an accomplished and technically proficient project. Amazon reviewer Stephen Howe described this as Gypsy Jazz with a more modern sound. I have the opposite point of view: these boys are trying too hard to keep it traditional. Without trying to phonographically copy the original, a great tribute innovates. The addition of an accordion has the adverse effect of making this music feel more formative than what Django Reinhardt played in even the early 30's. When Parisian Cafe music meets Gypsy Jazz, it makes Django seem downright avant garde. Aside from the accordion, this project treats Gypsy Jazz as a classical form or an endeavor that's mostly worthy of faithful reproduction. While there's merit in this pursuit, why not just play the original Hot Club of France recordings? This type of studio music is redundant; I look forward to experiencing what must be a scintillating Hot Club of Detroit live performance.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Club of Detroit is hot.......2006-11-04

When I first heard this album, released in August of 2006, I thought it was Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of France. But when I heard a clarinet and an accordion, instrumentation I was almost certain Django Renhardt didn't use, I became curious. This album is terrific. Most songs are Django Reinhardt compositions sounding much like the Hot Club of France style of the 30's and 40's but with a more modern style mixed in, including some be-bop like phrasing. I heard a Charlie Parker quote on at least one occasion. These guys are immensely talented and have impeccable chops, playing rapidly with seeming ease. Anyone who enjoys good music will love this album. I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars Puttin' Detroit back on the map!.......2006-08-21

Although initially not made curious by the cover or the fact that there's now a "Hot Club" in virtually every major city, still, being originally from Michigan myself, I had to give this cd a try--and was glad I did. This is a solid first recording for the band, which, besides the brilliant guitar of Evan Perri, features a clarinet (reminiscent of Django's later Hot Club sound--but no violin) and button accordion. I enjoyed this recording for its focus on the songs rather than the 27 notes per mili-second pyro-technics offered by some players. That being said, it doesn't lack speed or energy. reviewing music in a genre is always a very subjective endeavor, so I'll conclude by saying, if you like the approach of Pearl Django, you'll definitely like this group. I'm listening to it as a I write this. Really fine! It's been a long time since Detroit's been this hot.

Junior Brown, the multi-dimensional Americana/honkytonk artist who dazzled fans in 2004 with his Telarc debut, Down Home Chrome, ratchets up the intensity with Live at the Continental Club: The Austin Experience, a richly layered set that captures the witty songcraft and mind-bending fretwork that have become his trademark in the live setting.

      5 out of 5 stars This Man's a Genius.......2006-12-30

I "discovered" Junior Brown about 6 months ago when CMT ran the video of (his song) Highway Patrol. At first the quirky black and white presentation caught my eye while the solid beat caught my ear. Then Junior ripped into his Guit-Steel solo and I was mesmerized. I love good guitar playing, and style (Jazz, Country, Rock)doesn't really matter to me. If it's well played I'll listen to it. Anyway, I wanted to pick up a Junior album with Highway. I settled on this one. When I bought it, I listened to it about four times in a row all the way through, and then ordered another Junior Brown CD. If you can appreciate good guitar and real musical talent then you won't be disappointed by this album. I think I know good music when I hear it, and I can summarize this album and Junior Brown in one sentence: This Man's a Genius.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-10-19

I was there the night he recorded this album, I was walking down South Congress when I heard that guitar and a super deep voice. I'm a long time Junior Brown fan, so needless to say I freaked out when I walked up to the Continental Club to see the man himself was on stage. The price at the door was about $25, so this album is a bargain.

3 out of 5 stars Should have been better, but this will have to do........2006-09-27

This is a tough review for me to write as I am a total Junior Brown fanatic. I've seen him play many, many times and I've been waiting for a live album forever. Unfortunately, this wasn't his best night. You have to understand Junior is constantly touring - how he is able to get up on stage night after night after night playing the same songs is beyond me, but I'm still happy to hear him in whatever town I'm lucky to catch him in. For the most part Junior sounds tired on these tracks (he sounds great on "Juan Charasquado" though). Maybe he ought to take a few months off and let his batteries recharge or something. I wish he'd included "Freeborn Man" on this cd - the difference between the studio version and live is huge; I've heard him play what can only be described as an incredibly intense, blistering version of it live that had me shaking in ECSTACY - but it is not here. It's GREAT to hear "I Want To Live and Love Always" live, but it just isn't as good without Steve Layne playing and singing along. The "Rock and Roll Guitar Medley" is always a treat but it would have been SO MUCH BETTER if "Ghost Riders In The Sky" and Sergio Leone western themes were included again in the mix (hint, hint Jr. for future road dates).

3 out of 5 stars Better to see him live than to listen to this live disc............2006-07-25

I have seen Junior Brown live a few times and I am always amazed at his guitar prowess, however I am very disappointed in this particular release:

1-First of all its only 52 min. long. A cd has about approximately 79 minutes of available space, and with Junior's songs being relatively short, there could have been 25 minutes more music on here.

2-The set list isn't the best.....there are MANY definitive Junior tracks which don't show up here at all.

3-Aside from the last track (Rock and Roll Guitar Medley) the performance here is rather lifeless, the singing sounds tired and strictly by the numbers....no flash, electricity or energy Junior usually provides in his LIVE shows...on this, he tends to simply 'phone it in'.

I really love Junior Brown and his music/guitar abilities, but this disc doesn't not reflect his ability as a performer, just that of a guitar picker.

4 out of 5 stars Junior Brown Live is an alopated, psychotronic, swampadelic experience!.......2006-03-24

The Man of 'Guit-Steel' does it again. I saw him once
in Virginia Beahc, VA at the Naval Base in an outdoor
free show! I would have paid hundreds, though. He and
his band are excellent and he is very funny and enter-
taining as well, "Get that hippie off stage". No way!
