A fine collection of early bop gems........2001-03-05

The personnel listed for these 13 tracks from various dates between February of 1945 and May of 1946 reads like a who's who of bop. Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet leads groups including, Charlie Parker on alto, Sonny Stitt on alto, a young Dexter Gordon on tenor, drummers Shelly Manne and Kenny Clarke, Vibraharpist Milt Jackson, and bassist Ray Brown. All of the selections are classic bop numbers performed in small combos or high energy big band settings. The sound quality is fairly good for material from this period. Overall this is a worthwhile cd for fans of Diz and classic bop.

Skip this one, buy something more expensive..........2003-03-05

This is a bargain-priced sampler of Dizzy, but the sound quality is poor. There is no static, as if the tunes were transferred from old 78-RPM discs, but the man's horn is unpleasantly shrill and the volume varies from cut to cut, a flaw that drives me nuts. There are moments in a couple of songs in which it sounds as if the original record or tape was heat-damaged. The tunes are not memorable, either. I found this at quite a bargain price, but still it didn't pay off. Stick to a remastered reissue on RCA Bluebird or some other major label for your Dizzy collection. I'm actually going to throw my CD away, so no one else gets to hear how poor this compilation sounds.
