4 out of 5 stars Watch this album "Come To Life" with a fresh CD copy!.......2007-07-11

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

1974 saw the release of "Dragon Fly" and it was obvious that the plane would now fly in another direction. The project obviously without Hot Tuna's Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady did encompass original Airplane members Paul Kantner and Marty Balin along with Grace Slick who was present for the entire journey excluding the debut record. An additional dose of J.A. flavor is sprinkled with Papa John Creach (An Airplaner since 10/5/70), David Freiberg (Joined the Airplane after the start of the 1972 tour), and John Barbata (Became part of the fold during 7/72).

Craig Chaquico (guitar) known by the band for his work on Jack Traylor's (Long time friend of Paul) 1973 Steelwind album and Pete Sears (bass and keyboards) friend of the band since his appearance on the 1971 Papa John Creach self-titled LP were never asked to emulate Jorma and Jack. There mission was to play in a new unit with a much different vision.

The idea of a different vision would alienate some of the older Airplane fans but the door would be open to create their own niche.

"Ride The Tiger" to this day remains as one of the finest Jefferson Starship compositions in any of their terrific incarnations. The riff is memorable from the initial listen and the words a powerhouse.

"Be Young You" could stop a herd in their tracks. Grace's inflection and vocal style make everything in the outside world superfluous for 3:46.

"Caroline" demonstrates that in any era Marty Balin's ability to take a ballad to escalating heights can never be questioned. It gave the band what they needed the radio exposure for the hit oriented crowd to go with the airplay of "Ride The Tiger" for the Album Rock segment.

"Come To Life" is a tune I specifically asked Craig about in "Take Me To A Circus Tent." The sound of his guitar is perfect. He told me that between John Barbata (Drums) and Jorma's brother Peter (Guitar) they had instilled upon him the importance of the right equipment for the specific song. He had met Peter in a previous session. To this day "Come To Life" is one of the most underrated tunes the band would ever pen.

"Hyperdrive" with the longest playing time of any of the eight tracks closes the album. The tune written by Sears and Slick takes us in every direction for nearly eight minutes. Grace's vocals resonate with passion and the band jelled as if they had done this for decades. It's a tune people listen to over and over to soak up every nuance they could fine.

There could be only one Airplane but the Jefferson Starship has flown a different fight path and has done it well. Paul Kantner can be proud to carry the torch for the 40th Anniversary of the Summer Of Love!

Enjoy the music and be well,

4 out of 5 stars AIRPLANE BECOMES STARSHIP.......2006-09-09

Jefferson Airplane evolves into Jefferson Starship in this 1974 album that, despite the name change, seems a natural progression of the Airplane's cosmic minded, hippie drenched music. Marty Balin returns to the band with the stunning and dramatic rock epic, "Caroline"; a 7-minutes plus progressive ballad that soars like a released bird into flight. Paul Katner's "All Fly Away", is a hallucinegenic dream of other worldly horizons that offers H.G. Wells imagery in a world where "we rode a bubble to the sun,... there were men with fiery wings". Grace Slick's "Devil's Den" is a clever jaunting word play with fiddle,(Papa John Creech), assessing time running out on an evil capitalistic nation, that gets slightly sinister in Slick's spoken line followed by a creepy mocking laugh, "he thinks he's born to glory". Opening track, "Ride The Tiger" offers Jefferson's leftist political leanings in a racially divided America that needs to 'ride the tiger' to a better tomorrow, and Grace Slick's "Hyperdrive", (she once cited it as one of her favorite compositions), combines cosmic imagery with scientific logic, in yet another attempt to leave this world for another, asking quite eloquently, "where do you go on a night that is clear and warm?", along with bizarre geometric inclined lines like, "I've heard circles moving right through corners". The song, "That's For Sure", (love that indifferent group harmony), is a windswept hilltop of life and death philosophy, and "Come To Life", comes alive as a catchy rocker with touching nostalgia, "remember the times and places, glass eyed stares from glowing faces?". Dragon Fly is a humble and confident offering from the Jefferson clan, and it's got one of the best cover arts of the '70's.

2 out of 5 stars "Sing! Sing to the sky!".......2006-06-08

A weak freshman effort from the earliest Jefferson Starship iteration, DRAGON FLY suffers, as many J. Airplane/"Solo"/J. Starship/Starship albums do, from overproduction.

This band, in whatever form its taken, has always loved its multipart harmonies and heavy instrumentation. When the formula works it works very well, but when it doesn't, the music tends to have the dissonant sound of rush hour gridlock in Manhattan. And although the Jefferson Airplane "broke up" in 1972, the early Seventies saw a slew of various solo projects by various band members come to fruition, the overall quality of which were uneven. To be fair, it's difficult to write good material consistently, and the more prolific the writing, the more throwaways are created. It's clear that Kantner, Slick, Balin, et. al. all needed individually to take some real time off to find new directions for themselves. The early Seventies albums all seem to be retreads of each other.

So it is with DRAGON FLY. Most of this album consists of eminently forgettable songs with weak lyrics. The band's densely insistent musical aggressiveness does not lift any song on this album up to the status of a true "hit." The best song on the disc is far and away "Ride The Tiger," a piece which would otherwise qualify as a secondary choice on any Greatest Hits compilation.

The only other pieces of note are Grace Slick's "Hyperdrive," overly long and prolix but potentially a good "live" suite; and "Caroline," 'guest star' Marty Balin's lengthy ode to lost love, which anticipates "Miracles" on RED OCTOPUS.

Overall, DRAGON FLY is an unimpressive entry from a "new" band of the 1970s that had played themselves out being an "old" band from the 1960s.

5 out of 5 stars Jefferson Starship Take Off With A Bang.......2004-06-15

With DRAGON FLY, the Jefferson Starship take off with a great album, maintaing the feel of the old Jefferson Airplane with a 70s sound. A couple of songs are not that great, but the rest of the album is, and serves as a dry run for RED OCTOPUS.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great example of excellent 70's movie scoring!.......2005-07-04

first off, let me say that the version i have of this score is taken from the dvd. the audio can be selected alone. so, i went through and recorded the cues to my cd burner manuall(yes it was tedious but worth it). this way you get all the cues, plus nice, dvd sound.
a great soundtrack in any format without a doubt!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars THA SONGS.......2004-05-03

I really love owning the original movie soundtrack to Enter the Dragon but I really do wish that every single piece of music would be included on the album. Most of the score is included but they need more

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant !.......2004-04-15

Lalo Schifrin the composer had a real challenge scoring for Enter the Dragon due to its Chinese influence. The result is simply brilliant. Not only is this a great film, the sountrack is extremly well done. Definately buy the remastered version which is now available. Originally, the remastered CD version came out in 1997 along with the DVD box edition. There are several tracks not on the original release which is in MONO ! The new tracks are 1. The First fight 2. The Banquet 3. Headset Jazz 4. Into the Night 5. Goodbye O'Harra 6. Han's Cruelty 7. The Big Battle 8. Main titles (alternate take). Schifrin uses heavy orchestration including experimentation with new sounds but pays emphasis on double bass & tabla. For real film buffs, the score from this film sounds awfully similar to Joe Kidd done about a year ago (1972). For fans of film music esp from the 70's don't miss this one !

4 out of 5 stars Good for its time but now somewhat outdated.......2004-03-20

The soundtrack from the film was great at the time it was first released on LP in 1973 but now it does appear outdated. Make no mistake about it, Lalo's track "The Human Fly" was a remixed version of a score used in the 1966 NBC series "T.H.E. Cat," for which Schifrin composed the theme music and episode scores. Worth owning for its nostalgic value to both Lee and Schifrin fans, but young people probably won't appreciate it a great deal, especially those to who Bruce Lee is a vague name.

5 out of 5 stars TOTALLY (Karate) CHOPPED OUT.......2002-02-03

Excellently composed and synchronised to match the movie scenes spot on, Claudio "LALO" Schifrin must have been ALL FUNKED OUT whilst doing this score. Almost 30 years later, it still very much blows most of us away, those fortunate enough to own the extremely rare 25th anniversary remastered edition of the album will definitely dig the 6 or so additional tracks not found on the original, please check out the superb JazzFunk track "HEADSET JAZZ" (though a bit short but it still delivers) and also the marvelous bridging on the track titled "HAN'S ISLAND" (sounds oriental but done 100% with western instruments).

5 out of 5 stars Going out with a flare.......2000-04-02

Mulligan's last record came out as one of his most beautiful of all times. The tunes are fabulous, the arrangements clever and understated, the players doing a wonderful job. Mulligan with a.o. John Scofield and Grover Washington, Jr. makes an interesting blend, and the outcome is better than anyone could have thought. I truly agree with everything that has been written before this review, and I hope many music lovers will find their way to this record. It is timeless music, genre-crossing, swinging and full of heart.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting - with melody, harmony and counterpoint unequalled........1998-08-26

I have always loved the music Gerry Mulligan created - either written or spontaneously improvised with his groups. This last and greatest collection immortalizes the genius forever and is his perfect epitaph. Each "tune," as Gerry called them, is perfect in and of itself, and is also perfect in its placement in the album. There is not a selection that is inferior in musical quality or soulful emotion. I am particularly moved by Dragonfly, Backstage, Little Glory, Ninth Life and Underneath a Pale Blue Moonlight. Played over and over and over again, I never tire of the exquisite sounds, the majestic soaring and the subtle glances into the realm of the soul. If there is a heaven, Gerry is there, playing his music - the quality that is on this CD. In the hereafter, God would allow this kind of joy to be found anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars I discovered Sibelius with this CD.......2001-03-18

I'm a big fan of Mattila and of art song. But Sibelius was mostly unfamiliar to me (except for some of his symphonies) until this disc. I especially liked the final cut, Jubal. The accompaniment here is minimalist with Mahlerian touches. Mattila sings exquisitely throughout. If you like songs by Brahms, Mahler, or Strauss, expand your knowledge horizon with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Voice - Beautiful Music.......2000-11-17

I especially liked the songs "Var det en dröm?" and "Norden", but all of these songs are beautifully sung throughout. Karita Mattila has the perfect voice for these songs. Her voice is soft, yet strong, and the cool color is used well especially in "Norden". It is also clear that she understands every word she is singing.

This record is also a great introduction to Sibelius songs, for those who are not already familiar with them. There are also wonderful recordings of Sibelius songs by Jorma Hynninen, Tom Krause and Anne-Sofie von Otter, that I highly recommend.
