Pat Martino has certainly had more than his share of ups and downs: after establishing himself as one of jazz's outstanding guitarists and a major influence on such younger players as Pat Metheny, he suffered a brain tumor that forced him to relearn the instrument. Now that he has come all the way back, it's even more interesting to see where he started with El Hombre, his 1967 debut as a leader. A Philadelphian, Martino worked steadily in the organ combos so popular in the region's jazz clubs, earning his bones as a sideman for Jack McDuff, Richard "Groove" Holmes and Don Patterson, and this date reflects that background, with organist Trudy Pitts serving as Martino's primary foil. As its title suggests, El Hombre has a decidedly Latin tinge, employing flute, conga, and bongo for a soulful bossa sound that, while currently out of vogue, proves remarkably winning. From the opening "Waltz for Geri," Martino establishes himself as a confidently swinging yet breezily relaxed player, and turns in some of his best performances on the title cut and the extended "A Blues for Mickey-O." For guitar fans unfamiliar with Martino's work, El Hombre is a revelation. --Fred Goodman

This is a must have if you are not familiar with zarzuela (Madrid's response to Vienna's operetta). It's a nice combination of arias sung by Caballe in beautiful voice and joined by her husband tenor Bernabe Marti for the duets. The CD comes with translations for non Spanish speaking which will greatly improve your satisfaction.
Caballe is in as beautful voice as ever and feels at home with this non very taxing repertoire. She doesn't overindulge in her other times frequent "floatiness" and is very expressive throughout. Thogh sometimes when some coloratura is needed she tends to drop the consonants blurring her enunciation of the words. We are used to this from her opera recordings though she's not as bad as Sutherland.
Marti is a nice tenor but is not in the same league as Caballe. That's why he never got star recognition though he made a few recordings whith his wife, like Bellini's "Il Pirata". His is a lyrical tenor, a little throaty but with nice projection of the sound. He sounds a little strained over the "passagio" but hits all the notes. More importantly, he compensates for his lack of vocal lustre with burning impersonations of his characters. Passionate and burning in some, tender and caressing in others. In this respect is better than his wife who is a little more doll like hidding behind her vocal resources. So I specially enjoyed the many and varied duets in this recording.
Strongly recommended.

Perfecto, inolvidable.......2006-02-10

Dicen que las primeras impresiones son importantes. "El Hombre del Traje Gris" fue el primer album de Joaquin Sabina que escuche. Despues de escucharlo quede marcado, y aunque busque mas material como el que Sabina capturo en este album, y aunque Sabina ha grabado mucha musica increible desde que salio esta produccion en 1988, nunca mas produjo un album entero tan perfecto, tan inolvidable. Desde "Eva Tomando El Sol" hasta el "Rap del Optimista" su genialidad a nivel de composicion, su sentido del humor impecable y la chispa y sensibilidad en sus letras me capturo por siempre. Son casi dos decadas desde que salio a la venta, y todavia hoy "Quien Me Ha Robado El Mes de Abril", "Una De Romanos" o "Los Perros del Amanecer" se apoderan de mi cada vez que las escucho.

"El Hombre del Traje Gris" es uno de esos pocos albumes que merecen el titulo de clasicos, y como tales, deben tener un lugar especial en toda coleccion musical de rock en español seria.

This is Pat Martino's first album as a leader. The recording is great and all of the songs swing like crazy. Pat is on fire here. He is truly a unique guitarist. This is a great introduction to his playing as well as an essential album for all Pat Martino fans or jazz guitar fans in general. Enjoy!

Spanish Pop/Rock Foursome El Hombre Burbuja Made Its Debut with the Release of a Self-titled Album in September of 1999. Formed by Singer/Guitarist Julio De La Rosa, Drummer Antonio G., Ex-los Grandes Bassist Mariano H., And Keyboardist Sergio M., The Band Returned in February of 2000 with an EP Called El Té De Los Locos, featuring Five Original Songs, Followed by Nadando a Crol, Album Produced in Madrid by Kaki Arkarazo. That Same Year, El Hombre Burbuja's "¿por Qué No?," was Featured in the Movie Gente Pez.

Great Rock Band.......2003-03-12

Here we have a good rock band, as they define themselves.

This is their first album, and although they had serious problems during the process of making it, you can see this was a great seed of what will be their next records("Nadando a crol" & "La paz está en las matematicas").

You can find here just and simply honest,alternative riskful rock. An special mention for their lyrics: they write in spanish, not as many indie-bands in spain. And they know how to use this language to make great mixes between music and the words used.

The Lp has a high general level, but my favorites are: "El te de los locos"(inspired in: Alice in Wonderland), "Bang,me apuntaste y Bang", and "Donde estas II".

It is sad, but great bands as "El hombre burbuja" don't have many chances to survive in this country, where it seems to be no place for no marketing music. So, enjoy this record, but remember that we have lost another great band.

A Phenomenal Journey from Rio Bravo to Rio de la Plata.......2004-01-31

Yolanda and Enrique offer us this true Latin American musical embrace. Although I knew of Enrique Coria's masterful guitar style, this lyrical duo with Yolanda Aranda really exceeded everything I expected. The trained voice of Yolanda takes us through zambas and huapangos with passion and subtleties. My favorite tunes are La Malagüeña (where Yolanda shows the real pitch of her voice) and La Canción Mixteca. Chava Flores' Mi México de Ayer is also really moving. In La Pucha con el Hombre (a great escondido in the tradition of Los Carabajal), Yolanda may not compete with my paisana Mercedes Sosa, yet her voice really shines. In summary, this is one of the best Latin American musical partnerships I heard in the last years: an homage to the everlasting Latin American musical tradition.
