Great CD.......2007-02-10

As a George Duke fan I found this CD to be a rare treat. The tracks remind me of vintage Duke with smooth piano rifts and great jazz sound. Jazz piano lovers will enjoy.

George Duke is at his best. "In a Mellow Tone" will put you in a mellow mood. "So Many Stars" will take you almost to heaven, and "Just Because" brings you to what made George Duke the jazz master that he is.
I love this cd and play it everyday. Duke's vocals are extraordinar on "Sweet Baby" just as they fit on everything he sings. Do I like this cd; of course, I absolutley adore it. Once you listen to it I guarantee you will to.

Mellow George.......2006-08-09

This CD is like a fine wine that goes with every occasion. Just put it on and let massage the senses. I have been a fan of George Duke for many years now, and I must say he only gets better with time. I can listen to every song and it can take me to another place and time ( I personally like listening through the headphones). Try it, I think you will like "in a mellow tone". Most fav cut is 'never will I marry'

I read a couple other reviews where George's vocals came into question on a couple of songs he had penned. Memo to reviewers...this is a George Duke CD. Who can sing lyrics to songs written with more feel for the essence of the song than the actual author? Read the liner notes. The vocals are wonderful!

That is like saying hey Dylan...your voice sucks! Man you guys are crazy and if you want pure feel and integrity of the music this CD flows and is a continuation of a long line of wonderful music produced by George Duke and his accomplished professional band of musicians. No packaging, no frills, just pure music.

George Duke never gets enough credit. Definitely get this CD, sit back and enjoy! Peace.

It should get a 5 star rating, but.........2005-07-18

It is a chopped and patched cd! It has two selections among others that were only available from a very obscure LP called 3 Great Bands, with Prado and Hirt. "Bluesy" features a smooth solo by the ever grand soloist for Mancini, Jack Sheldon, who also puts a very catchy "Lawrence of Arabia" theme ending. This is almost surely worth the price, but then listen to the Ellington tune "In A Mellow Mood" and you'll be blown away. Where these tunes come from is an even greater mystery to me...the # GB I told you about was only an RCA promo thing, and not a Mancini effort. So take this one and run because you'l not find these selections anywhere else! It is reminiscent of "Uniquely" and "Big Band'67" and as jazzy as Gunn and others of the early RCA genre. You'll love it, and the prices it is being offerred at is a bargain.

Quite a start for the fledgling Zoho label . . ........2004-06-20

. . . landing Harvey S, Vic Juris, and Dave Liebman for half its initial releases. I haven't heard the Juris yet, but if it's anywhere near as good as Harvey S's Texas Rumba and this fine disc, it will be quite something.

In a Mellow Tone strikes me as even better than last year's excellent Conversation. Recorded a year and a half prior to Conversation, it employs the same band save for long-time Liebman associate Jamie Haddad in the drum chair instead of newcomer Marko Marcinko. And that, perhaps, is the difference. Haddad is, simply, a great drummer/percussionist, very coloristic and entirely simpatico with the Liebman sound. Moreover, I think there's both a wider variety of moods and, contradictory as it sounds, more cohesiveness to this group. Plus, Liebman plays more tenor, which I think is his better instrument.

Often, it seems as if jazz players take two different paths to greatness--either an early meteoric flash followed by slow decline (e.g., Sonny Rollins), or a slow, steady ascent to the top (e.g., Joe Lovano). Dave Liebman, probably in his early 50s, has followed the second path; he is just now coming into the greatest years of his playing. Long regarded as Coltrane disciple, he more and more seems to have articulated an approach on both tenor and soprano that, although definitely derived from Coltrane, is clearly his own.

Highlights include the title cut, rather radically reharmonized and featuring some very mellow Juris guitar voicings (this is surely his best playing anywhere on disc); "Child at Play," a simple-sounding but deceptively urbane piece inspired by Liebman watching his daughter and some friends playing at their local schoolyard; "The Sun King," a very world-jazz number featuring some exotic percussion courtesy of Haddad, very nifty flamenco guitar stylings, and Liebman's haunting wooden flute and dancing soprano; the neo-boppish "Chant"; a gorgeous, languid reading of "My Heart Will Go On," an achingly beautiful ballad; the Sci-Fi-ish "Romulan Ale," the only Vic Juris composition, with its intriguing bass line and Latin-from-mars rhythmic sensibility; "Change Up," a Lennie Tristano number featuring some very nimble unison lines for guitar and soprano; and the amazing "Vamp to Life," which kinda sums things up with the whole band cavorting and conversing at the highest level. Hmmm. I seem to have highlighted almost the entire disc. Always a good sign.

Very highly recommended.

Solid collection from Hawk's late period........2000-12-04

This cd pulls material together from sessions dating between 1958 and 1962. After fourty years of legend status Hawkins was still inspiring, and being inspired by, younger musicians. Among those supporting the venerable icon are Red Garland, Tommy Flanagan, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Ron Carter, and Kenny Burrell. The generally laid back material ranges from standards, tender blues, a couple up-tempo blowing numbers, and an enjoyable nonet piece on "Jammin'in Swingville". While the take on "Greensleeves" seems a bit sappy, this is an entertaining, if unspectacular set of music from Coleman Hawkins. Longtime fans of Bean will be pleased with this cd, and while it is not the best introduction to one of the giants of jazz, it is enjoyable enough to recommend to new listeners because Hawkins' faculties are in check, and he still possesed one of the best sounds of all time.

Howard Alden and Bucky Pizzarelli CD "In A Mellow Tone".......2005-01-30

I had the great pleasure of being in the audience with about 200 other astonished listeners as Howard and Bucky played masterfully on their respective 7 string guitars. They played each of the songs on their new "In A Mellow Tone" CD and while nothing can beat a live performance for shear ambience, the CD comes a very close second and helps me to relive those precious moments as they played. I couldn't recommend another CD as much as I can this one. If you are a guitar player, buff, Jazz enthusiast or just like to hear great music played by a couple of masters, this one is for you.

Hodges & Davis were great, and I wish more of their stuff were readily available. But this one appears to be a duplicate of "Johnny Hodges & Wild Bill Davis". It has the same two artists and the same track list as ASIN B0000206A6. (Damn. And there were so few albums of these guys as it was!) That other album at least has some audio samples.
