Sonic Blow-Out!.......2007-06-20

The music is very familiar to any ELO fan (it helps that I consider this their best album) so I'll only comment on the sound on this new remaster. WOW!

Even if you own a first pressing vinyl copy (one of the best sounding vinyl releases ever), even if you own a Japanese copy of this on vinyl, even if you own any of the cd releases of this great album, you NEED this re-issue. Not only does it include a few bonus tracks, the remastered 2007 version (done with Jeff Lynne's participation) is absolutely STUNNING.

The deluxe version has some impressive packaging, despite the fact that it's very difficult to get the cd out of it without major fingerprints on the disc, so casual fans might want to stick to the regular jewelbox version. But, and I cannot emphasize this enough...if you are a fan of ELO in ANY degree, GET THIS!!! The sound will knock you out.

If you love ELO you must own this CD, the packaging in a hardbound book form with the small put together ELO Mobile is awesome for any collector. I really enjoyed the quality of these recordings especially since I still own the Original 1977 double LP, it was also great to get a few bonus tracks not previously availible.

Great Album... why two versions?.......2007-03-26

Okay folks, first you have to realize that there are two versions of this album. The Annaversary Special Edition of which I highly recommend you purchase, and the Sony stick it to-ya version of which you will find every song crammed onto one CD... which means they shortened space time between tracks, shortened beginings (listen to the fade between Big Wheels and Summer and Lightening to hear what I mean), and worst of all lower quality sound.

AARRRGGHHHH!!!!!

Why could they not just release the great Special Annaversary version complete with the 1977 sleeves, lyrics, punch-out, poster and set a mid-ranged price for it instead of doing such an injustice to ELO's second best album?

Jeff and the boys should be charging down to whatever Sony mogul here in the USA is and show him what "Electric Light" means.

Grief!!!

Overall, if you can, get the Special Editions and leave the other one alone unless, like me, you intend to use one as a keeper and the other as the playing version. I highly highly recommend Out of the Blue just like all of the other Remasters and find Latitude 88 North to be worth the wait alone.

Now we need a Remastered Zoom, Armchair Theater, Kelly, and other post ELO efforts to make the collection complete.

fine symphony pop/rock.......2007-03-17

an excellent album of rock/pop music with classical overtones. the group's leader, jeff lynne, is an extremely talented individual with an extraordinary sense for fine pop melodies. the classical overtones are more mozart, than say, stravinsky or mahler. the orchestra is always moving forward, elegantly, to a satisfying resolution on each song. the songs themselves are almost all fine, but my one gripe would be that this was a two record set, thus a looong cd, and the tempos of the songs are all fairly similar (upbeat, but not really hard rocking), thus towards the end it does seem that some editing could have been used, and the whole thing made just a tad shorter. small complaint though. i highly recomment this album. wonderful stuff.

OK, so I'm not going deaf........2007-03-04

I too was disapointed in the remaster. I've read the comments on the other reviews, and there are a number of reasons why the remaster didn't seem to meet my expectations. But the bottom line is that I bought this expecting a significant upgrade in the listening experience, and I didn't get it.

The book is cool. The little cut-out spaceship and the printed stuff is a fitting tribute to this pop masterpiece, but I expected more in terms of sound, and bonus tracks for that matter (although what's there is good and we've already got a double album on one CD so there's not much space left for bonus tracks).

I suppose that if this is the best that can be done after thirty years, then as the old saying goes: that's all there is; there isn't any more.

Great reissue, it's now better than ever.......2007-07-18

ELO are amazing when you listen to them on a stellar sound system. They really do sound like an orchestra, but they don't resemble classical music. They are more of a rock/pop band, with some touches of funk and R&B (at least to me). But what makes them stand out is that they use orhcestral instruments, and they sound just _______ majestic, yet to the point. You simply have to listen to believe it.

Out OF The Blue is my only ELO album, so I have nothign to compare against others. Out of the blue is really cool to hear, it's not something I would listen to everyday, but still, the songs are excellent. Mr. Blue Sky, Night In The City, and Jungle are amazing songs, they represent ELO at their best.

Okay, I am having trouble naming some of the highlights, everything on this record is spacey and futuristic, it's pretty involving and immersive. Just remember to wear headphones whne going Out Of The Blue.

Out of the Blue - Captures Memories.......2007-05-18

This double album came out when I was preparing to start spring semester at a new college. The memories come surging back and the quality enhances this great sounding music. Jeff Lynne was a tune-smith supreme!! The musical peaks, crisp surges and those perfect hooks stirred memories with each song. Back in the day, these songs were played everywhere I went. ELO was the main sound of my world!! ELO was a major musical force in the 70's. Their sound is unmatched and timeless.

ELO at their most ambituious.......2007-05-04

Jeff Lynne was always a master tunesmith, but even at his best (Eldorado and Face the Music), he often tripped over his classical predelictions. "Out Of The Blue" was the climactic moment where Lynne's determination that pop music pinnacled at "I Am The Walrus" matched his classic experiments perfectly, and he was just beginning to let go of his rock and roll visions. (Even if the next tour was the infamous Spaceship Stage extravaganza.)

This is the album that yielded two flawless pop singles, "Turn To Stone" and "Mr. Blue Sky," inescapable some 30 years later. But Lynne also wanted to try out his inner "Abby Road" with the side long "Concerto For A Rainy Day." It flows like a good song suite should, more so than "Eldorado" did, and climaxed with "Mr. Blue Sky."

"Out Of The Blue" is loaded with moments of pop perfection. You can hear Lynne's evolution into Travelling Wilburys territory on "Across The Border" and "Birmingham Blues." His fascination with the American west (think "Poker" and "Down Home Town") on "Wild West Hero." His melancholy also comes to the fore on "hero" and "It's Over."

I will be one of those who is actually pleased with the remastering. The highs are a lot crisper and the soundstage seems to be broader. The annoying dropouts that plagued the previous CD are all but gone. This is the best version of "Out Of The Blue" yet. Don't be scared off by the audio-snobs - this is a brillant pop album and deserves a space in your CD collection if you're an ELO fan.

For all of you reading the negative reviews now thinking "I shouldn't buy this because it doesn't sound good" forget that! From a technical side this album has always sounded great but now it sounds fantastic. Using state of the art technology Jeff Lynne personally oversaw and conducted the remastering. I too have compared the two CD releases and even the vinyl release and concluded this one just sounds best! But here's the thing, one can't fix something that's not broken. So when one thinks of a remaster one may expect a dramatic improvement in sound quality. Not so much on this remaster BUT! One will hear things that weren't as noticible before; actually make out the words on believe me now. Performances are more apparent so on and so forth. The only thing kinda lame about this expanded edition is that it gives the listener only three more tracks: two short ones and one brand new song; all of them are amazing.

Out Of the Blue is Electric Light Orchestra's most famous album, many consider it to be the best and that's difficult to argue with. The album was even more successful than another release prior to that and has some of the most famous ELO tunes on it, like Sweet Talkin' Woman and Turn To Stone and Mr. Blue Sky! This album released more singles than any other ELO album, and all of them shine. So If one is even a little interested in ELO, he/she should make sure that this decade defining album is in their possession!

I woudn't call it a remaster when it sounds like this........2007-03-20

OUT OF THE BLUE is not my favorite ELO album. It is in fact, TIME. Some of you are probaby shocked by that but hey, I like ELO a lot and I chose to have an odd choice of a favorite. This brings me to this album. Normally it should be a 4-5 star album. But I have to agree with the others about the remastering.

I have a very high end stereo, everything goes Digital cables or Digital Ballanced cables. I usually notice the smallest things. For instance the new Boston remasters, Fantastic. This remaster sounds boomy, Dull and Flat. However, the original released (Remastered by Joe Gastwirt) sound top notch compared to this.

I don't know if Jeff Lynnes ears are gone, or if he wasn't that involved. Or perhaps this is a mistake and we got an age old tape duplicate. After all, the other ELO remasters are wonderful.

FInal opinion....Buy it for the restored artwork and the two bonus tracks. It isn't a high priced remaster (other bands up the price to $18.99 to re-release this kind of stuff).

last great studio album.......2007-04-21

This was the last great studio album Dolphy was to record before his early death months later in Berlin in June of 1964. Some of his best works on bass clarinet and flute are found on here, including "Hat and Beard" and "Gazzelloni". Dolphy's bass clarinet skills are typically in the middle range and his phrasing and tonality are just amazing. Freddie Hubbard (t), who played on Dolphy's 1960 "Outward Bound" album returns on here to add his expertise. Richard Davis (b), who played on the 1961 "At the Five Spot" and 1963's "Music Matador", is also present on this date. Bobby Hutcherson (vibes) and Anthony Williams (d) were both new to Blue Note, and their presence on this album assured their longevity with the label. Considered by many fans and critics as the highpoint of Dolphy's career, "Out to Lunch" is certain to bring more fans flocking to Dolphy's work for years to come.

Stellar.......2007-03-24

I had only heard Dolphy with Mingus before this album. The playing here is excellent. All the players are great. Dolphy's solos sound like they come from another place and time. Hutcherson makes the vibes sound menacing. I have never been a huge vibes fan but the use of them on these songs is perfect. Young Tony Williams also shows off his amazing ability on the drums. This type of jazz is not for everyone but after a few listens it really grows on you. There is a haunting quality to several of the tunes that is amazing.

five outstanding eric dolphy compositions performed with wonderful uniqueness by a quintet of jazz masters. dolphy himself plays alto sax, flute & bass clarinet on this recording. he is joined by freddie hubbard on trumpet, bobby hutcherson on vibes, tony williams on drums, and richard davis on bass. rock fans out there might know richard davis as the master of acoustic bass who contributed to the making of van morrison's all-time classic album "astral weeks." on "out to lunch" all five of these great musicians are soulfully creative and a shear joy to listen to. regarded as a jazz classic, this recording certainly deserves that distinction. great stuff.

the best album so far until 2007 nothing tops this one. Andrew Hill is close, very close. But this is still the best album out there.

A Big Piece of a Sadly Small Legacy.......2006-11-01

It could certainly be argued that multi-reedsman Eric Dolphy had finer moments as a player than OUT TO LUNCH, his last studio date as a leader and the only one he recorded for Blue Note Records. But as the only entirely self-composed Dolphy session and one of the most famed avant-garde jazz recordings ever, this set has little if any competition as the most comprehensive expression of a tragically short-lived artist's very personal vision.
Dolphy had barely four months to live when he recorded OUT TO LUNCH in February of 1964 with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Tony Williams - indeed, he would not live to see the album's release. By this late date the Maestro's normally sublime blowing had taken on some of the harsher, squeakier, squawkier and gruffer qualities then in vogue among many of his "free" progeny, though Dolphy manages with admirable tenacity to keep at least one foot on firm sonic soil throughout most of this session. The leader's best performances are probably on his two alto saxophone workouts, "Straight Up and Down" and the title tune, while "Gazzeloni" is a skittering flute race quite unlike any of Dolphy's earlier efforts on that instrument and "Hat and Beard" and "Something Sweet, Something Tender" showcase, respectively, the most raucous and most genteel aspects of his legendary bass clarinet playing.
OUT TO LUNCH is less remarkable for Dolphy's solos, however, than for the stunning manner in which it manages to skirt the very edges of chaos for most of its forty-two minutes without once falling in. Regardless of one's opinion of this sort of music, there is no denying the internal cohesion and conceptual/compositional integrity of this remarkable date. Much of this is undoubtedly due to the superb rhythm section, particularly Hutcherson, who manages to hold all of the wildly swirling parts around him together on the most unlikely of instruments. Hubbard, for his part, provides the essential link to more mainstream jazz which helps keep OUT TO LUNCH as curiously accessible as it is, and proves as perfect a foil for the leader here as he had been on Dolphy's very first album, OUTWARD BOUND, four years earlier.
As a huge Eric Dolphy fan, I necessarily love OUT TO LUNCH, but less than I do several of the Maestro's more traditional sessions. Nevertheless, this album's seemingly impossible refusal to implode, shatter or just float away qualifies it as a singularly spectacular moment in progressive jazz history, and an absolutely essential part of any comprehensive collection.

I have been "shaking my love" to Debbie Gibson since the 80s. This album is solid - it is the pop standard.

Debbie writes great sing-along hits that don't involve sexual (or criminal) lyrics. This album proves that you don't need sex to write/promote a solid pop album.

This is a CD the whole family can enjoy. A+++

The teen queen of 80s pop (sorry, Tiffany).......2006-10-23

Four huge hits (Shake Your Love, Foolish Beat, Out Of The Blue, and Only In My Dreams) and the inclusion of one of the other songs (Red Hot) on a movie soundtrack from the same year cement this as one of the great 80s pop classics. A talented and precocious musician who wrote all of her own material and sang it with energy and passion.

A good debut from one of a trio of 1987 female singers.......2006-01-14

There is one thing that the cable channel VH1 does very effectively. It allows one to relive moments from your childhood through its "I Love the [insert decade here]" series of shows. Born in the early 1970s, but with music tastes more in tune with the 1980s (when I really started to notice girls) I was sitting down to watch the episode covering 1987 when a familiar music video played across my television screen.
Rewind almost 20 years and I was a 15-year old high school student in the United Kingdom. While all my friends were into heavy metal and speed metal bands I had a secret - I enjoyed and listened to pop songs and released that year were a trio of female singers, two of which would have a major impact on my life. First, was the incredibly beautiful French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis whose debut single "Joe Le Taxi" rocketed up the charts and to this day I collect any DVD or music that is released by her (which isn't much since she became the life partner to Johnny Depp). Second came Debbie Gibson (who now prefers to be known as Deborah). I immediately developed a teenage crush on the blonde singer/songwriter and joined DGIF (Debbie Gibson International Fanclub) before they had even settled on a name. To this day the only fan clubs I have ever joined was DGIF and Vanessa Paradis'.
Debbie's first CD single "Only In My Dreams" was actually released in December 1986. But she did not appear on the British music scene until mid-1987 with the song "Shake Your Love," and it was this song that introduced me to the talented young performer (and the video of which made me sit up and take notice on VH1 recently). The songs on her debut album were all light hearted and good-natured (including my favorite "Red Hot") with a heavy reliance on rhythm and drum programming (this was after all the decade that saw a heavy use of synthesized tracks).
Debbie's main competitor stateside was Tiffany who had risen up through performances at U.S. shopping malls. But whereas Tiffany was a product of cookie-cutter marketing and was fond of doing covers of others songs, Debbie wrote all her own material and represented a warm personality and a wholesome image that I appreciated.
Debbie wholesome image took a hit in 2005 when, after almost two decades of refusing requests from Hugh Hefner, she agreed to pose topless for the men's magazine `Playboy.' But a quick google of her name and one comes to realize that Debbie may have vanished from the mainstream music scene but she still has legions of loyal fans and DGIF is still going strong.
And it all started with this great selection of pop music.

A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08

Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.

These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.

One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.

My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."

My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."

The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."

The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."

Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)

A Long Awaited "Gem".......2007-07-09

My LP of this show was totally worn out, so I'm absolutely delighted to have this on such a great sounding CD. Davis is right up there with other musical luminaries such as Hepburn in COCO and Bacall in WOMAN OF THE YEAR and APPLAUSE. All three were non-singers who acted, and their recordings are really just a joy to have to offset soprani like Cook, Chenowith, and Lukker.

This really is a must have recording for any true musical comedy lover who wants the unusual and historical. Davis's "Turn Me Loose on Broadway" is wonderful from her "Mistah conductah, iff You Pleeees" to her slightly off tempo "hey" in the dance break. Davis did try to sing several times through her career. Frank Loesser's "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" has been on a few collections, and there was that failed musical version of THE CORN IS GREEN entitled MISS MOFFAT that closed in Philadelphia. Betty Davis wasn't a good singer, but she tried!

The supporting cast is excellent, and I think it's just a joy to hear an old-school musical by one of the forgotten greats, Vernon Duke. That's why I'm really pleased to have the Duke bonus tracks on the CD as well. It's a great value with Davis, Duke, and Lawrence Welk and his orchestra as well. The album was coveted for years, and it's just wonderful to have it in better sound than it ever was.

Bette Davis in a musical...yes, you heard right.......2006-10-05

Bette Davis in a musical? In 1952, when her film career started on yet another downward spiral and she was unceremoniously labelled as "box office poison", the legendary Ms Davis decided to do the unthinkable, and made her Broadway musical debut in TWO'S COMPANY, a fluffy little revue that would have certainly folded a lot quicker if a mega-watt star like Davis was not in the starring role.

TWO'S COMPANY ran on the box office power of Davis, and the moment she became ill and started missing performances, the closing notices were posted (the show limped along for 90 performances). Nevertheless, this curious jewel of a show was recorded, and now gets it's CD premiere thanks to British boutique label Sepia.

Apparently, Davis was so embarrased by her performance, that she attempted to buy every single copy of the original LP in order to destroy them. One can just imagine Davis (in full Margo Channing mode) swaggering into a record store and slamming a pile of TWO'S COMPANY albums onto the sales counter ("don't bother to wrap `em!").

While Davis was never a singer, she croaks out her songs quite well, and what she lacks in musicality she compensates with comedy and sheer brio.

Performing the more demanding material is Ellen Hanley, known to musical fans for her Tony-winning role as Thea in "Fiorello!"; as well as Adrianna in the 1963 Off-Broadway revival of "The Boys from Syracuse", and replacing Polly Bergen in "First Impressions" (the Jane Austen/'Pride & Prejudice' musical of 1959).

Sepia's remaster of the TWO'S COMPANY album (taken from original 78's) is quite crisp and clean, with some slight hiss and sonic wobble in certain areas (like towards the end of "Haunted Hot Spot"), although we are lucky to have this title on disc in the first place.

Known for their copious bonus tracks, Sepia do not disappoint, and the TWO'S COMPANY disc is filled out with extensive supplementaries (Nancy Walker singing "I Can't Get Started" and Jack Smith with "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight"); and a whole "Vernon Duke plays Vernon Duke" section.

Now that TWO'S COMPANY has been released on compact disc, we can finally hear what all the fuss was about.

Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

ELO's fusion of Beatles-esque harmonies and melodic structure, coupled with their symphonic arrangements was just on the verge of wearing thin at the time they released Out of the Blue. To argue that the double album went platinum because of the band's live extravaganza to support it--the band performed inside a flying saucer--is a premise worthy of consideration. Song for song, Out of the Blue is not as strong as Face the Music, but it still has some of Jeff Lynne's finest compositions ever recorded. "Turn to Stone" and "Sweet Talkin' Woman" are almost downright giddy in their deliveries; the former opening with a string riff, the latter with a minor key violin line, before boasting a choral background accompaniment. "Mr. Blue Sky" and "The Whale" are almost too hokey, yet still managed to work. "Standin' in the Rain," "Big Wheels," and "Summer and Lightening" are more memorable. But in the end, power cello riffs can only take you so far. Stick with a "greatest hits" or "best of" collection in this case. --Steve Gdula

Astonishing!!.......2007-04-22

This is with out a doubt the crowning jewel in the career of E.L.O. !! The whole album is absolutly amazing!! Try listening from track eight to track 15, over and over again and see if you can see what Jeff Lynne and the band are doing there, just awesome, absolutly awesome!! It's too bad E.L.O. did not follow up on `Out of the Blue' in a similar fashion on the next collection of songs in this amazing concept of a rock'n roll/classical band! If you haven't heard it, I challenage everyone to try it!!!

fine blending of orchestration and rock.......2007-03-15

an excellent album of rock/pop music with classical overtones. the group's leader, jeff lynne, is an extremely talented individual with an extraordinary sense for fine pop melodies. the classical overtones are more mozart, than say, stravinsky or mahler. the orchestra is always moving forward, elegantly, to a satisfying resolution on each song. the songs themselves are almost all fine, but my one gripe would be that this was a two record set, thus a looong cd, and the tempos of the songs are all fairly similar (upbeat, but not really hard rocking), thus towards the end it does seem that some editing could have been used, and the whole thing made just a tad shorter. small complaint though. i highly recomment this album. wonderful stuff.

A GREAT CLASSIC.......2007-01-27

This is such a great cd and one of ELO's finest achievements. I only rate A NEW WORLD RECORD and TIME slightly better. This is one of Lynne's masterpieces and such a great listen it is. My only complaint is that I wish there were more up-tempo songs than slow/mid-tempo ones, but oh well we all can't have our cake and eat it too! Anyway, if you don't have this cd in your collection/library, by all means, get this one. You won't be disappointed! Can't wait for the 30th Anniversary Edition cd to be released!

The peak of ELO's library!!.......2007-01-05

ELO evolved for many years before this recording came out. They then hung around for several years after this one. In all of the earlier recordings you can hear all the pieces coming togerther. In the later ones, you can hear the group slowly disolving. Luckily this particular recording is of such high quality that ELO has left a great legacy for their fans and fans of progressive rock (used in its literal sense). Out Of The Blue initially was released on vinyl as a double album but has been condensed to a single CD for today's format. Jeff Lynne did a wonderful job putting together this futuristic sounding concept album. The whole band have their highlights on this recording. From Lynne's vocals and slick production skills to fantastic drums, keyboards and strings. If you are looking to get one ELO album to represent the best they had to offer, this is the one to get hold of.
Jeff Lynne produced several memorable recordings even after ELO broke up so his influence can be heard in several different ways (George Harrison, The Traveling Wilbury's, etc.).
Everyone's basic library should include this disc.

ELO's Very Best Album.......2006-11-03

I really like ELO's unique style, and Out of the Blue is my absolute favorite. I get tired of listening to their other albums - composed mostly of songs that simply miss the mark, or consist of too much Top 40 jello. This album is their most dynamic and I never get tired of listening to it. The mix of songs is just right, with real zingers like "Turn to Stone" and "Sweet Talkin' Woman" flowing into others with a different twist. And living around Seattle, the juxtaposition of "Standing in the Rain," "Summer and Lighting," and "Mr. Blue Sky" is simply brilliant. Lacking a strong cup of joe, "Mr. Blue Sky" replaces a jolt of [...]e anyday. Crank it, baby! Awesome. "Steppin' Out" brings a touch of melancholy that is so unusual in popular music. Wow - nuance!? Amazing!

Ok, the Whale is a bit much - unless I'm in the mood, then it is the greatest. This is a wonderful album and deserves a re-issue. The Amazon review is totally wrong-o this time around.

Superb display by multi-talented songwriter.......2007-02-17

Eleanor's subject matter is always highly engaging and entertaining. Try "Suffer so Well" on this her sixth album. It is also amazing to find that she plays every instrument on the album except drums, and sings all the backing tracks. These are the art songs of the 21st century.

This album deserves 5 stars!.......2007-02-04

The previous review hit all of the elements of how wonderful this album is - but one disagreement - it is truly a five, not three, star album - one anyone who loves great music would want to add to their collection. One other point - in the description of the album it states that SACD compatible equipment is needed to play the album - this is not the case - it can be played on any type of equipment. Please add this album to your collection - you won't be sorry!

It is a very welcome back to Eleanor and her new CD. Bravely taking on almost all of the instrumentation and arranging this has turned into a very fine outing. Blessed with a voice that is instantly recognisable all the trademark elements are present. Sharp observational writing that is amusing, music that hooks you on the line and very accomplished playing. This time around she casts her net on, of course love and life, but also on the transient elements associated with our must have world.

The album is split into parts 1 & 2 and has a total of fifteen tracks. Kicking off with the self deprecating Non Smoking Single Female, a song about the difficulties of finding a partner is an amusing and accurate analysis of those rather sad wanted ads seen in many publications.

When you have a singer and writer of this quality it would be unfair to select out favourite tracks but To Sweep Away A Fool, Quote I Love You Unquote and Vigeland's Dream from part 1 are very fine.

Part 2's Three Nights In November is particularly poignant. Fields Of Dublin 4 has the silliness of our material and busy world down pat and The Way You Wear Your Troubles with its simple blues feel work well.

Mention should also be made of brilliant simple covers of Marvin Gaye's Mercy Mercy Me and Roll Um Easy from Little Feat's Lowell George, which are icing on this aural cake. This album has a beautiful sound to the recording, which shows Eleanor off for the fine artist she is.
