5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

4 out of 5 stars Not for the simple .......2007-07-08

Trey and Phish paid their mortgage with easy-to-process jams, stop-on-a-dime changes and sophomoric pranks. This album, however, is a complete departure, i.e., not meant for mindless dancing or chummy sing alongs. This album covers some free jazz territory and it's not afraid to get sparse, moody & modal; it even has some funky fusion for the neanderthals in need of a recognizable pattern. The album seems to travel in between Coltrane's Impulse years and MMW's lawn without blinking. There is a little bit of aren't-I-weird sound effects, and some of the pieces devolve into abject nonsense, but it all seems to fit. Many of the people who criticize this wonderful offering expect it to be something it NEVER attempts to be: easy. This ain't a toe-tapper, it's a mind bender, to be played on those haunted evenings when you're driving through the strange part of town. The song "Down" could have come from the brilliant Dave Holland Quintet, and it is as playful and infectious as anything from Medeski Martin and Wood. The song "Out" could have followed "Mademoiselle Mabry" from the complete "In a Silent Way" sessions. And yes, there are some rough patches that a lesser artist could not have afforded to produce...but you can chalk that up to Trey's celebrity. He's earned his Revolution #9.

Everyone knows that the boys from Phish are very literate musicians. Their range, for a jam band, was staggering. This album proves what I always thought about Trey: the only thing bigger than his insanely vast musical vocabulary is his respect for dissonance and his penchant for anarchy. Kudos to him for putting out an album that will reward both careful attention and pill-popping abandon.

1 out of 5 stars That's right, 1 star........2006-09-12

I, like many others here it seems, am a fan of Phish and have a pretty open mind when it comes to music. Still, this will never be listened to again by me. Is it jazz? Is it a jam? I'd say it's the sound of a bunch of great musicians all playing a different song at the same time. Honestly. Some parts are dead quite, others are obnoxiously loud, but all are just annoying. Listen before you buy, and if you're looking for something non-Phish with Trey in it, just get his "Shine" album, or even Oysterhead.

1 out of 5 stars Unlistenable.......2006-07-21

Is that even a word? It is now...and it can be applied to this album. I am a huge Phish fan as well as a fan of Trey's solo work. When I saw the artists on this CD, I thought how could it go wrong? And yet it did.

I'm not a music afficiando, but for the average listener and even jam band fan, this is an endless cacophony of mangled and irritating sounds. Stay away.

5 out of 5 stars genious.......2004-08-24

I'm not going to say that if you don't enjoy this album that you don't have any musical taste, because you probably have more taste then those of us who did enjoy the album, but it definitly takes a certain mind set and a certain type of ear to be able to even start listening to this album, never mind to enjoy it. For those of you who bought it and didn't really like it, I'll tell you that I was in the same situation. When I first listened to it while talking to some friends online, I hated it. I thought "great 15 dollars worth of garbage." THIS CD IS NOT BACKROUND MUSIC! Take some time to really listen to it. This music is not suppose to be pleasant to the ear music, it's an insightful look into the world of avant garde territory, and an ingenious effort by Trey Anastasio and all parties involved, including: John Fishman, John Medeski (of the psychedlic jazz trio Medeski Martin and Wood), Kofi Burbridge, and Oteil Burbridge (notably of The Allman Brothers Band, Vida Blue, and The Aquarium Rescue Unit), are among notables brought in by Anastasio. Truly a piece of musical genious.

5 out of 5 stars Tension and Release.......2004-02-13

This is exactly what Trey talks about in his "Tension and Release" interviews. This CD is like the tension-release-tension-release jams on live Chalkdusts. Only, instead of the end of a tune this CD is an undulating flow of energy throughout. The idea was not to pull off jazz standards but to communicate with each other musically. Trey once said in an interview "Sometimes, if you can get your ego out of the way the music will flow through you." What a great line-up. Oteil Burbridge from Aquarium Rescue Unit, Allman Brothers Band, and Vida Blue, Trey Anastasio from Phish, Trey Band, Vermont Jazz Allstars, Oysterhead, 8 Foot Flourescent Tubes, etc. Joh Fishman from Phish, Pork Tornado, John Medeski from MMW, members of Sun Ra's Arkestra. You've got to be open to this CD to enjoy it.

      Amazon.com

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20

this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.

Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.

Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

      5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10

I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.

4 out of 5 stars The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28

Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08

This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.
