Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Bassist Charles Mingus was always ready for a good fight. In the liner notes to this disc, Mingus says he wanted to respond to critics who said he didn't swing enough. And reply he did. Mingus gave whoever these absurd quibblers were some of the most ecstatic blues ("Moanin'" and "Cryin Blues"), gospel ("Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting"), and Dixieland ("My Jelly Roll Soul") the jazz world has ever heard. Along with his striking original compositions, the instrumental combination in Mingus's nonet remains unconventional: the frontline included four saxophonists and two trombonists without the counterweight of a trumpeter. The leader's sliding-octave bass lines and percussive slaps are totally rollicking, and the wild abandon in the group's playing is irrepressible. --Aaron Cohen

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
As bassist, pianist, bandleader, composer, arranger, and modern jazz mahatma, Charles Mingus had plenary control of all the expressive devices needed to manifest blues cries from the soul. The gospel blues 'Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting" and five more numbers on this famous 1959 release have his ten musicians' spontaneous phrases in perfect balance with his ingenious compositional turns. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

Within the soul-drenched music of northern Florida's JJ Grey and band, the roots run as deep as the influences are indelible. "War" and "By My Side" sound like Southern-fried Sly and the Family Stone. "Turpentine" recalls the swamp funk of Tony Joe White. Both "A Woman" and "The Sun Is Shining Down" suggest long-lost Otis Redding sessions in Muscle Shoals, while "Mississippi" takes Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" on a trip down to the delta. From the harmonica-laced country blues of the title track to the gospel piano and choir of "On Palestine," Grey's music compensates with conviction for what it lacks in originality. --Don McLeese

Album Description

JJ Grey & MOFRO's Alligator debut, Country Ghetto features 12 original JJ Grey compositions that come right out of the Southern musical and literary tradition. Grey's ear for detail inhabits his songs, whether it is a story passed down to him from his grandmother or the tribulations of a childhood friend. His voice delivers them with an unflinching strength that makes the personal universal and paints a vivid portrait of an exact time or place with words and music. Like his songs, his rich, soulful vocals are forceful and commanding, seemingly old beyond his years. And the music, from smoldering soul ballads to gospel-fried funk to straight ahead rock `n' roll, brings it all home with danceable grooves and a melodic freshness that will stay with you long after the album ends.

Grey's songwriting influences are widespread. "I listen to people who tell the story," he says, naming Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, R.L. Burnside, Tony Joe White, Jerry Reed, Otis Redding, Dr. John, Sly & The Family Stone, Van Morrison, Bill Withers and Dan Penn. What these writers and performers have in common is a love for simplicity, evoking complex emotions with a minimal number of words. As a performer, Grey is influenced by the sexually charged blues of Howlin' Wolf, the country soul of George Jones and the hard funk of James Brown, as well as local personalities like street preachers and old time radio DJs.

5 out of 5 stars JJ & Mofro will make you swing.......2007-07-17

Saw these guys at Wakarusa rock fest in Kansas this June and they blew the crowd away. JJ and the band sound like a modern version of some country funk time machine. I told friends to catch thes guys when they played an outdoor show in Iowa with B.B. King. My friends agreed, these guys are full of soul and can really rock. Great cd, buy it, go see their show. This is the real deal!!

5 out of 5 stars music review.......2007-07-11

I love this cd. It is in frequent rotation at my house. It is good on two levels. For one, the funky swamp infested bluesy songs will have you dancing, but the quieter "love songs" are really earthy and sensual as well. It is a great combination of styles and musical instrumentation. I hope they keep on making great music for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Cant go wrong with Country Ghetto.......2007-06-20

I could write something about how much I love every song on this album but all I need to say is INSTANT CLASSIC. If you love Southern Fried Soul Music these are your guys.

"The Sun Is Shining Down" and "Tragic" are especialy powerful songs.

Enjoy.

Sounds exactly like Sly meets Holmes Brothers meets Edwin Starr meets Jonny Lang meets Sonia Dada meets Black Crowes mets Creedance meets Drive By Truckers meets the Beatles. Sort of.

4 out of 5 stars Another letter from home........2007-05-29

If you've never heard MoFro, then you need to tune in to and find out about some "front porch soul". If you HAVE heard the first two albums, don't think Country Ghetto is some rehash of previous material to fulfill a label contract. It IS the same soulful instrumentation and vocals. But JJ has more stories to tell and they come across to me like a letter from home - full of honest emotion about things we share, the good and the bad. Country Ghetto has a more serious feel to it for me than MOFRO and LOCHLOOSA. Its not just the lyrics of a young inciteful poet, talking about life. Its the lyrics of a man, living life with the convictions, dignity and respect for life you learn when you grow up in a Country Ghetto.

Why cant all music be so innovative and original?

5 out of 5 stars A Gem That Flys Under The Radar..........2007-06-05

A cool disc that you wish you'd hear in a smokey bar, but probably wont. Great hooks and melodies with a slightly punkish take on Rock and Roll. This cd is way cool enough for older rockers, but I'm afraid the only people who hear about it thru the grapevine are most likely younger hip kids. That's a shame because this disc is a keeper! Yes, Dylan type lyric structures run thru the whole disc, but with a smokey bar-room feel. Great sense of humor concerning drug references. I am now forced to explore these guys past cds cause this one is so damn tastey!

5 out of 5 stars All we're gonna do is fight tonight..........2007-06-03

I can find glowing reviews for ANY cd on The 'Zon, but not even a bad one written for Ike Reilly's newest. That's a shame, peoples, because you're not in on it. Don't blame me, I had no idea you were so uncool. This is a classic rock and roll album for the present. Some metion Dylan as a reference, but there's nothing folk about it. It uses bits of most American pop of the last 50 years and kicks it out in a shambling, drunken, druggie, classic punk rock song fest. It pretty much rocks. If you drink, smoke and like rock n' roll, you'll like this a lot. If you jog, meditate and eat vegetables, you'll still probably like it. Get in on it now, and I won't tell your friends about the lameness. Have a nice day.

That the most famous garage-rock record of all time, the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie," is buried on the last CD of this four-disc box is very much in keeping with the spirit of the (often) one-hit wonders that people Nuggets. Here, "Louie Louie" is just another great song. An elaboration on the 1972 double LP, which is included in its original sequence, this set piles on dozens more great moments of inspiration, guts, chutzpah, and sometimes sheer commercial calculation. How else to explain the advice "Look at yourself" from the likes of the Strawberry Alarm Clock, whose idea of mind expansion seems limited to putting together two very vaguely related nouns--"Incense and Peppermints"--so their swinging Farfisa-led track will have something, anything, for verbal content? There's loads of such wisdom on display here, prefab and otherwise, usually delivered as rabidly as possible. (Try the Remains' "Don't Look Back," Mouse and the Traps' "Maid of Sugar--Maid of Spice," or the Music Machine's "Talk Talk," which was actually a hit.) And remember: "The sky is falling / The ocean is calling / The world ... is spinning 'round ... and 'round." For sure. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Suburban and purely American and great music!!!.......2007-07-03

This is a fantastic collection. Precisely what rock'n'roll was meant to be in the 1960's: Raw,snotty,youthful-and not necessarilly "great artistic" music or "classic rock", whatever the hell that garbage is, like it degenerated into after the Sargent Pepper album came out and ruined everything about real '60's rock'n'roll. While many of these bands were indeed influenced by The Stones (not to mention The Yardbirds,Kinks, etc.), it is completely unfair to compare them to British bands, since they had an attitude and sound that was distinctively American and all their own. Sure, many of these bands were one hit wonders or no hit wonders, but so what? Most of this is great music.
And in response to some reviews saying how this can't compare to The Rolling Stones, etc., in my humble opinion, most of this is far better. Anyway, I've always thought The Stones were one of the most overrated bands of all time. Real rock'n'roll isn't supposed to be great art nor take itself all that seriously, which is exactly what happened after the overrated Sargent Pepper album came out,and in my opinion the ridiculousness of Hendrix, Jim Morrisen, etc. (Don't get me wrong, these guys were talented-just took themselves too seriously).
Anyway, I suggest buying this collection if you like raw, unpolished, sixties punk. And I also recommend the "Back From The Grave" compilations.

4 out of 5 stars Un fourre-tout de bon stock........2007-05-30

5 out of 5 stars Song upon song of rock n roll glory!.......2007-05-22

Better than just about any album I can think of, Nuggets embodies the spirit of rock and roll, captures that elusive musical zeitgeist and pins it down for all to behold and admire. The songs found on these four discs are loud, fun, catchy, colorful, occasionally beautiful and often mind-altering. Bridging the gap between pop, r&b, psychedelia, proto-punk, folk-rock, surf, and dance-craze insanity, these songs exemplify the anarchic, bouncing off the walls, let's-bash-this-sucker-out-and-have-more-fun-than-anyone-has-ever-had-before philosophy of rock and roll, assaulting (and delighting) listeners with blasts of youthful agression, boundless energy, and unfettered enthusiasm. From start to finish, its an awesome experience, and one that every self-respecting rock fan should experience at least once in his or her life- preferably once a day.

The box set's first disc (which recreates, track for track, the original Nuggets album, as compiled in 1972 by Lenny Kaye and Jac Holzman) alone is one of the greatest rock albums ever. It features absolute classics such as the Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)," a psych-pop call to arms whose reverbing guitars and aching vocals will resonate accross the ages, as well as the Standells' "Dirty Water," a slinking garage-rock foot stomper with a great sing-along vocal and a nasty guitar line. Orther garage-rockers include the Seeds' "Pushin' Too Hard," which boasts a wonderfully weird two-chord guitar riff and a snarling lead vocal, as well as the Count Five's ludicrously catchy Yardbirds ripoff "Psychotic Reaction" and the 13th Floor Elevators' certifiably insane "You're Gonna Miss Me." Which is to say nothing of The Chocolate Watchband's "Let's Talk About Girls," which manages to out-sneer the 'Stones, and the Amboy Dukes' cover of "Baby Please Don't Go," an absolutely hyperactive proto-metal jam-out/guitar assault. And then there are the pop classics: In "Sugar and Spice," the Cryan Shames create one of the most irrisistable love songs ever, outfitting a wonderfully dopey main melody with some playful guitars and a rhythm that will never leave your head. Ever. "Night Time" and "My World Fell Down" (by the Strangeloves and Sagittarius, respectively) make use of layer upon layer of instrumentation to create dizzying little constructions of pure radio gold, while the Castaways' "Liar Liar" does an excellent job of being as weird as it is catchy. Just listen to those vocals! Other excercizes in sheer awesomness include the Remains' "Don't Look Back," one of the many tracks on this set that can be described as "driving, emotional, and utterly cathartic." And then there are the Premiers, whose "Farmer John" matches its sheer sing-along-till-your-lungs-fall-out catchiness with wonderfully mind-numbing stupidity. The Magic Mushrooms' "It's-A-Happening" is pure googly-eyed psychedlia, and our lives are all the better for it.

The next three discs, graciously compiled by the good (very, very, good) folks over at Rhino Records, expand on Kaye and Holzman's compilation, serving up 91 more littel-known gems from the mid 60s. They, of course, rule, and it would be just about impossible to go through all the highlights here, but there are a few that just beg to be raved about: The Litter's "Action Woman" is a pounding, vicious, roaring fuzz rocker, and the Sparkles' "No Friend of Mine" is every bit as ticked off and maniacle. The Chocolate Watchband's "Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love In)" is a tough-as-nails blues pounder with a wonderfully sarcastic lead vocal and some mean guitar outbursts. The Brigands' "Would I Still Be Her Big Man" is a tense, moody stunner, with some fantastically emotional vocals. The Broques "I Ain't No Miracle Worker" is... remember how I said that a lot of the songs on this set can be described as "driving, emotional, and utterly cathartic?" Here's one of those songs. Needless to say, it's mind-bogglingly good. Ditto the Dovers' haunting, gorgeous "What Am I Gonna Do" and the Lemon Drops' dreamy "I Live in the Springtime." And if you liked "Farmer John," just wait until you hear "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)," one of the most heroically stupid frat-rock songs ever recorded. The Elastik Band's "Spazz," meanwhile, is utterly insane. By the way, I haven't even come close to summing up all the styles and sounds on this set. There are still all those great folk-rockers ("Little Black Egg," "Laugh Laugh"), psychedelic head-trips ("Last Time Around," "Voices Green and Purple"), earth-melting guitar storms ("Blackout of Gretely," "At the River's Edge"), and "Louie Louie," which really is its own genre. The point is, these songs are incredible. Incredible! Vital, even. Listen to 'em once, and they'll become a part of your life forever. And trust me, they make for great friends.

Plus, the set comes with an eye-wateringly good bocklet that features great essays, pictures, and band bios (including commentary on all 118 tracks!) Basically, this is a gift to any fan of rock and roll, an utterly listenable musical classic that belongs in every CD case and pair of ears on earth. Absolutely, positively, 100% essential. You need this more than oxygen.

5 out of 5 stars First Psychedelic era 1965/68.......2007-05-07

This four cd set has a great deal of yesteryear music from 1965/68. As I was there at the time, to go back to this music that has value and meaning, understanding how this type of music developed. This is a "got to have" for your collection. Even this summer there is a Hippie Fest concert tour, helping bring back this era to a new generations. L$$

5 out of 5 stars Love Song for Bobby Long.......2007-05-12

This is a wonderful movie that shows how the love of a child can bring out the best in all of us. Wonderful literature references in the movie remind us of why we studied it in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars BEST MOVIE SOUNDTRACK.......2007-03-12

THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE SOUNDTRACK ALL OF THE SONGS ON IT ARE GOOD.

3 out of 5 stars Some good songs.......2007-03-08

I bought this soundtrack for a few particular songs that I heard in the movie, so I was not disappointed for those songs. Some of the songs I do not care for, but it is a good buy if you liked the music in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Saw the film and just couldn't wait to buy the soundtracks.......2006-10-31

Both are equally recommendable, the film and the CD.
John Travolta is rediscovered both as a singer and as an actor.
And we even discovered a new musician for us, Grayson Capps.

5 out of 5 stars C'est Magnifique!.......2006-08-27

The first time I saw this movie, I did not like it. But a couple of weeks went by and I thought back on the movie and decided to rent it again. I loved it the second time. The story line is very endearing and true to human form. The music of this story is perfect. Every song seems tobe strategically placed, which helps invoke the watcher's empathy for life's little down falls. I imeediately went out and bought the movie and the soundtrack. Both are a jem.

Think of Ry Cooder as a musicologist who makes learning fun. A particularly nifty collection from 1974, Paradise & Lunch is solo Cooder at his best. The song selection is inspired and unpredictable: numbers by Burt Bacharach, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and Bobby Womack commingle with ease. "Tattler" is a rare Ry original that happens to be one of the collection's highlights. Jazz legend Earl Hines guests on the dapper "Ditty Wa Ditty." --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Great disc.......2007-05-25

I didnt think I was going to like this as much as I did, but whadayaknow, it didnt leave my CD player in my car for like 3 days. This dude can play geetar. At first I wasnt sure about his voice, but then I woke up and realized he's pretty good. And man, he gets down with the guitar on a few songs. Really cool, interesting music for people that like music, and not stuff like Tim McGraw.

5 out of 5 stars Bluesy Americana doesn't get any better than this.......2007-03-28

Back in my college days in the early 70's I remember this album being voted as Album of the Year by (it seems like) Rolling Stone or Stereophile Magazine - I can't quite remember which. And so I bought it not knowing anything at all about Ry Cooder.

I tend towards music where the rhythms are strong and catchy as they are in early Soul/R&B music. If it isn't a good song in the first place, I don't care how good the instrumentation or the singing are performed. It just won't stand up.

Well, I go back to this album often and I agree with one of the other reviewers in the observation that the songs chosen here are a little eclectic in mix, but they all have that certain flannel shirt and blue jeans Blues funk character to them. The tone on Cooder's bottleneck slide guitar fits them perfectly as does his voice. His playing is stunning on most of the cuts.

The other thing I seem to detect in the choice of songs is a sense of humor. I'm not a big lyrics guy but The Tattler and Married Man's A Fool put a smile on my face every time I hear 'em.

As with several of the other reviewers, this one's in my Top Ten All Time Albums easy...

5 out of 5 stars Rich, Lyrical, Complex Blues.......2007-03-24

Ry Cooder is one of the most misunderstood recording artists of his generation. Too often critics treat him as some kind of rarified musical archivist or historian when he is really a very sophisticated arranger and an unparalled soloist. Simply put, "Paradise and Lunch" contains some of the richest and most lyrical guitar playing you'll find in any genre. By incorporating the instrument's complex blues legacy into his arrangements and playing, he creates an intimate and expressive album out of a very diverse set of songs. His "Mexican Divorce" may be the most subtle and emotionally charged version of a Bacharach/David song ever recorded. I've owned this album on vinyl for a quarter century and it sounds better each time I hear it.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings.......2007-02-12

Saw Ry Cooder on the PBS station with Buena Vista Social Club, bought this album expecting something I didn't get. It's ok, I guess I just don't get Ry Cooder

5 out of 5 stars One Of His Best.......2007-02-02

Another excellent Ry Cooder CD. Done in his unique country blues style. Right up there with Bop Till You Drop.

5 out of 5 stars awesome Bobfest! .......2007-06-22

I was living in NYC and working when I heard this concert announced on the radio. Sold out in minutes! Never did get a ticket, much to my regret but this cd and the accompanying video make me feel as if I was there to celebrate the music of Bob Dylan or as Neil Young proclaimed, 'Bobfest!'. Rarely a week goes by when I don't listen to a few tunes from this concert. The collection of artists could make the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame quake in it's boots. John Mellencamp kicks things off in high gear with LIKE A ROLLING STONE. My other favorites are Richie Havens, JUST LIKE A WOMAN. Eddie Vedder, MASTERS OF WAR. The Clancy Brothers really kick it in with, WHEN THE SHIP COMES IN and Shawn Colvin kicks a** with YOU AIN'T GOING NOWHERE. The Band WHEN I PAINT MY MASTERPIECE and what a finish with MY BACK PAGES and KNOCKING ON HEAVENS DOOR. My only regret about this cd is someone should have edited Stevie Wonder's ranting before he kicks off BLOWIN IN THE WIND. Political rants don't belong on this cd, it's all about celebrating the songs of one of our greatest artist.

4 out of 5 stars Great yet disappointing.......2007-06-01

This album is really recommended for Dylan's fans, yet I have to say that some of the artists, including Dylan himself, didn't perform like I have expected.

5 out of 5 stars Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert.......2007-06-01

Any Dylan fan would appreciate the scope of his compositions, especially if done by such an array of artists. Even though this concert is from 1993, the music holds up. New approaches of Dylan songs by the artists just go to show how the songs are timeless. Johnny Winters take on Highway 61 smokes and My Back Pages is the cut that initially caught my interest. You cannot go wrong in purchasing this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be better!.......2007-05-15

Not much to say, besides the fact that it is what i was looking for: probably one of the best concerts in the last 20 years, some names that have unfortunately disappeared lately but have made the history of modern music. if anyone is interested in live performances and likes bob dylan and all of his friends who play with him here, well don't think twice (got the quotation?) and purchase it

4 out of 5 stars Dylan's 30th Anniversary concert CD.......2007-05-13

Excelent Alblum, A chance to hear other well respected artists versions of some of Dylan's music. We all know Dylan's music, his own unique vocal and lyrical style which make his work, lyrics and music his own, Somewhat surprisingly to me, it confirms that good lyrics and music can be adapted to other artists styles and still remain good, if different in style and arrangements to the original versions. (Does Dylan every deliver any song in the same way twice ?.I think not)
The list of talent performering at this concert also shows the respect in which Dylan is held by his peers, world class talented artists queued for a chance to perform live Dylans material. Those who really know, It really works..

In this 2003 performance from the Austin City Limits series (also available on DVD), New England's Susan Tedeschi demonstrates a range that extends well beyond her blues base. Following the blueprint employed by Bonnie Raitt a few decades earlier, she covers John Prine's "Angel from Montgomery" (a signature tune for Raitt), inserting a snippet from the Grateful Dead's "Sugaree." The piano balladry of her "Wrapped in the Arms of Another" could fit just fine on a Raitt album. The set also finds her sampling from the songbooks of Sly Stone ("You Can Make It If You Try"), Bob Dylan ("Don't Think Twice, It's All Right"), and Stevie Wonder ("Love's in Need of Love Today"), in addition to the more straightforward blues of Koko Taylor ("Voodoo Woman"). Though Tedeschi's stinging lead guitar provides the focus, she receives strong support from a band featuring the interplay of electric pianist Jason Crosby (who doubles on violin) and William Green on Hammond B-3 organ. Highlights include a tribute to jam-band inspiration Col. Bruce Hampton on "Hampmotized" and the simmering "Wait for Me," with its echoes of Aretha Franklin. Tedeschi has yet to show the suppleness as a vocalist to complement her guitar chops, but the musical range she displays here bodes well for her artistic development. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding music marred by weak mixing.......2006-12-31

I've been a Susan Tedeschi fan for a while, and I was so excited to get this album for Christmas -- and overall, it's great music. Tedeschi is an outstanding blues/rock musician, and she's in great form with this recording from Austin City Limits.

I was really surprised, though, when I popped it in and heard nothing but Tedeschi's singing and the organ/synth. Yeah, the drums are present. During solos, you can sort of hear Tedeschi's excellent guitar. But the predominant instrument in the mix is that ever-present synth, and that is just not the right mix for her music.

Tedeschi is so good that this album is still excellent -- but more for the hard-core fans who can appreciate the alternate sound. The recording/mixing wasn't up to par, so if you've never heard Tedeschi before, go with one of her studio albums.

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but VERY Good!.......2006-06-11

Ms Tedeschi's rendition of "Angel From Montgomery" is worth the price of this CD. WONDERFUL!!! As great as Bonie Raitt does with the old John Prine tune, Tedeschi does better. Soulful and full of emotion. You feel the emptiness and the desire for that reprive. Just great!

5 out of 5 stars Like a live best of.......2006-02-08

With material from all her earlier CDs and a Sly and Family Stone cover not previously available, this serves as a live greatest hits or best of. I've seen her a few times live and this is very represenataive of her concert work also. The guitar work is fine but you can see the later material is emphasizing her vocals more than her playing.

5 out of 5 stars Susan Tedeski Rocks!.......2005-10-02

This is a fabulous CD of some of Susan's best songs! GREAT music with GREAT vocals as well as GREAT "jammin"!!! When you play it in your car, play it loud with the windows down to really appreciate it!!!! You'll be "jammin", too!!

5 out of 5 stars Susan Tedeschi-live from Austin.......2005-08-24

Seeing is better than just hearing; get the DVD version of this and see her blow away the blues. Her speaking voice is deceiving of her singing voice but style and skill all the way.
She is another pioneer woman in the blues world and has proven herself skilled and talented.

4 out of 5 stars Crossroads.......2007-01-09

The music is much better than the acting in this film. Ry Cooder's production of classic blues tunes remains one of my favorites today. The Karate Kid steps up to the plate but his performance is mediocore yet saleable. A great story, looking for Robert Johnson's lost tracks, a rendeveouz with the devil, a young love affair and a quest for redempetion make this film very likeable. It is, however, the music that sets it apart. If you are a fan of R. Johnson a lover of the blues then it's a must see/listen.

3 out of 5 stars No Crossroads Duel, No Problem.......2006-02-04

I see that most of the reviewers for this record are disappointed that the Cooder-Vai duel didn't appear on the soundtrack album. That's understandable. But for me, that was better experienced as video. Personally I think the high point of the soundtrack, and the movie for that matter, was the electric guitar bottleneck piece "Feelin' Bad Blues". It is fantastic. It sounds like the guitar may be accompanied by a hammer dulcimer toward the end. I played this for a young guy I work with who is a heavy metal fan and is just discovering the blues. He got wide-eyed.

5 out of 5 stars I just wanted to correct a post I read earlier..........2005-03-22

All of the best cuts from this movie are actually located on Steve Vai's CD entitled "The Elusive Light and Sound". It is a very excellent CD, and has over 40 tracks on it. Thats all, Thanks.

3 out of 5 stars Good Soundtrack.......2004-11-11

Good sountrack, and while I think that the idea was to lean towards blues on this release, some of the best music from the movie isn't on this release. To get that you need the movie DVD, and though I have no complaints in seeing the movie to get hear these tracks, it would have been nice to have them included on the soundtrack.

1 out of 5 stars Ah, the wonders of marketing!.......2004-06-25

Just wait until August, and buy the DVD. The 'soundtrack' only has just over 30 minutes of music on it, and omits some of the good stuff! If you simply MUST HAVE it, by all means, go ahead. As for me, I'm using my copy for a coaster right this minute.

Blues revivalists? Jam band? Power trio? Psychedelic tripsters? Southern rockers? While previous releases have found the pride of North Mississippi exploring various manifestations of their musical identity, on Electric Blue Watermelon they pull everything together and bring their artistic progression full circle. While acknowledging the seminal influence of Delta bluesman Charley Patton ("Mississippi Bollweevil") and fife master Otha Turner ("Teasin' Brown," "Bounce Ball"), the album finds common spirit in contemporary hip-hop on "No Mo" and "Stompin' My Foot," with guest rapper Al Kapone helping the band bridge past and future. Lucinda Williams teams with guitarist Luther Dickinson for a playful duet on "Hurry Up Sunrise," while steel guitarist Robert Randolph and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band extend the album's aural palette. Over the course of almost seven and a half minutes, "Mean Ol' World Wind Down" takes the listener on a musical journey from fife-and-drum roots through Bo Diddley insistence to Allman Brothers expansiveness. No matter how far they extend their musical vistas, the Allstars are always bringing it all back home. --Don McLeese

I've seen north mississippi allstars live a few times the best being memphis in may 2005 during sunset on the missippi river. I got electric blue watermelon first, really loved it for a couple of times but then ran across 51 phantom later on. man that one is way more heavy down south blues, and had less of the silliar songs. ( didn't like hurry up sunrise, or stompin' my feet, or deep blue sea,) the rest were ok.

to wrap it up, move onto polaris or 51 phantom, or even shake hands with shorty, or polaris

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. .......2007-02-19

Probably one of my favorite CD's of all time. North Mississipi Allstars never disappoint and this CD is no exception. It's a shame more people don't appreciate this kind of music because THIS is talent. Most of the crap you hear on the radio is over produced garbage (Paris Hilton has a cd? seriously?!). But this just makes me realize that there ARE real musicians out there and that some people DO get it. Buy it...you WILL NOT be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Not what we expected but great anyway.......2007-02-04

I've been a NMA fan since they started playing the Library in Oxford, MS (btw its right next to Proud Larrys where RL Burnside played too). And like you I expected NMA to stick with the hill country blues sound that got them where they are, but I shouldnt have. These guys have enough talent to branch out and still be true to the blues but break new ground. They tried to do that with Polaris but failed, but they nailed it this time. A song doesnt have to have a standard blues progression to be the blues. Blues is a state of mind and a feeling, and this CD has it! I look for great things from this band for years to come.

1 out of 5 stars Remember When They Played Blues?.......2006-12-06

Despite the fact that no one ever finds it "helpful" to post a negative review, I could not hold back. This is a horrible album. I fell in love with NMA when they performed on Conan (so long ago) and I rushed out to buy "Shake Hands with Shorty." To this day it is still one of my favorite albums, played constantly. I haven't heard anything since, until I got this CD, and I've got to wonder if I'm even listening to the same band.

I should have known better, I suppose. The crowded cover artwork is a pretty good indication of what's to come--an eclectic mishmash that hits on no other levels than being an eclectic mishmash. The real charm of this band had been their authentic simplicity, and thanks to it, a dirty swamp sound that effused their tracks. Frankly, it was a good, honest sound, something seriously lacking in today's music scene. All the guests on this album serve to simply water down and dilute that sound to something devoid of heart, but easier to swallow, I suppose.

It starts off just fine with "Mississippi Boll Weevil," a stomping swamp song if there ever was one, but it's a misleading lead off track. "No Mo" has to be one of the worst listening experiences I've ever endured... and that was only the second track. I listened on in vain hopes that it would get better, and it doesn't. Yes, Lucinda Williams is here, but one track is not enough to save an album.

It's sad to say that NMA are more of a jam band than a blues band these days. If one wants to excuse these musical dalliances on Electric Blue Watermelon as experiments in genre expansion, so be it, but they'll have to be recognized as failed experiments.

Ry Cooder may have been an in-demand session guitarist in the late '60s, but what set him apart in his early solo career was his extraordinary, if eccentric, taste in songs. Here he explores the repertoires of everyone from Johnny Cash to Bahaman folk master Joseph Spence to Leadbelly with enchanting results. While Cooder's vocal skills are no match for his slide guitar and mandolin talents (the latter showcased splendidly in "Hey Porter" and "Billy the Kid"), he's an amiable singer who resists the temptation to camp it up, even when essaying such antiquated oddities as "FDR in Trinidad" and "Taxes on the Farmer Feeds Us All." --Steve Stolder

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Awful Singing, Great Guitar.......2007-02-06

Whoa. I bought this album on the strength of these reviews and the 5 stars...but be careful, all is not 5 stars in the kingdom of Cooder. The reason you've never heard of this album is that while the guitar playing is impeccable, inspired and a mark of true talent, the singing is AWFUL. Cooder is almost tuneless and clearly has never learned how to sing. On tracks like Teardrops Will Fall, his back-up singers come in and really highlight how terrible his tune is. Consider yourself warned.

5 out of 5 stars Ry Cooder: Into The Purple Valley.......2007-01-10

Into The Purple Valley is basically a concept album about 1930s America, and Ry Cooder's second solo record. The only other Ry Cooder album I own is his self-titled debut, which is great, but this one blows it away. Certain songs on Cooder's debut are among my all-time favorites, especially "How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live?", which has heartbreaking lyrics almost enough to make the staunchest Republican turn socialist (contrary to a previous review, "How Can A Poor Man" IS from Cooder's debut album, not from Into The Purple Valley). But overall I was disappointed by the self-titled album, mainly because my expectations were so high. The sound was not full enough, since Cooder used a backing band on only a few of the tracks, and too many slow songs slowed everything down.

This album, however, lives up to all expectations. The foot-tappers "Money Honey" and "Taxes On The Farmer Feeds Us All" are the two perfect songs, but almost equally great are "How Can You Keep Moving," "On A Monday," and "Denomination Blues," all of which have awesome, lighthearted lyrics that would have come off as merely cute if they had not been done exactly right. And then there are the beautiful/sad songs: "Teardrops Will Fall" (which sounds much more modern than the rest of the songs, both musically and lyrically - it could almost be a Smokey Robinson tune), and "Great Dream From Heaven," a short but sweet instrumental. I realize that I've named nearly every song on the album, something that usually annoys me when I'm reading other people's album reviews, but that just goes to show you how much I love this whole CD. If you are a fan of roots-conscious rock music like The Band and Rory Gallagher, then you can't go wrong with Ry Cooder; and if you are just getting into Ry Cooder, I don't think there is a better starting place than Into The Purple Valley.

(Bonus tip: if you have not heard of Rory Gallagher, definitely check him out too, especially his two live albums.)

4 out of 5 stars Into the purple valley.......2006-11-02

It's a good sounding set of different songs of pass. I liked the different type music and lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars The Return to the Purple Valley........2002-12-30

Ry Cooder has shown us a wide variety and diversification of musical influences since this 1972 release, but to me, this is his best effort. I love the broad range of musical influences that he has taken over the years, including the commercially successful Buena Vista Social Club, however, Into the Purple Valley is where he is at home. From beginning to end, this album carries such a magical feel, particularly the struggles of the poor and oppressed from a long ago era, however, seems to give us an indication that maybe our own "blues" maybe waiting around the corner for us all. ( You must remember that Nixon was in office when this was released...need I say more?). My personal favorites are "FDR in Trinidad", " How Can a Man Stand Such Times and Live", and the ever amazing rendition of "Vigilante Man". I love Mr. Cooder's travels into the realms of other cultures and rhythems. Through these venture, he has broadened our knowledge and appreciation for the sounds and rhythems of our world through the eyes and ears of those who we would have otherwise never known or heard. However, I feel that there is more for him to explore and interpret from The Heart of America and to give his own special stamp of originality. To those of you who have never heard "Into the Purple Valley" have no hesitation in going out immediately and purchasing. It will become one of your very favorites. And To Mr. Cooder, when you grow weary of world travels, come on back to the Purple Valley. We will all be waiting for you.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had this CD.......2001-12-20

I purchased this CD a year ago, right about the time when I was, coincidentally, doing a history project about the Dust Bowl. It provided the perfect backround music for it, and I have loved it ever since. In my mind there are no weak tracks, with the possible exception of Teardrops Will Fall, which I did not care for at first, but has grown on me. What amazed me the most about this album was the diversity within the particular style of music Cooder is dealing with. I normally group music like this under the term "down home," but on this disk that can range from folk to blues, or even a bit of calypso. I unfortunately lost this CD, along with Chickenskin Music, on a Continental Airlines flight this summer (and was rudely accomodated too), but I am sure that I will own it again in the near future.
