Led by bassist and composer Juan Formell, the group Los Van Van--a sort of neo-charanga, the typical violin and flute ensemble--has been perhaps the most influential group in contemporary Cuban popular music for the past 30 years. Some of the group's innovations, especially in the refined updating of traditional rhythms with a pop and rock sensibility, are in evidence in this collection, which features mostly songs recorded in the 1980s and early 1990s. (Don't look for much more information than that in the accompanying booklet.) This is a group that can groove implacably and keep a light, sensual swing. If you're only going to buy one CD by Los Van Van, this is the one to get. The songs, "De a 7", "Calla", and "Anda, Ven y Muevete" are especially good.

This package is saturated with the Cuba of the 1950s, from the vintage taxi on the cover to the seminal mambo recordings made by the style's inventor. Moré's endless innovations are displayed here in any number of changes he executes on the music, varying tempos from ultrabrisk ("Mamboletas") to balladic ("Cuando Quieras Volver"), all the while emoting over one of the hottest bands ever to emerge from the country. An enjoyable collection of music........2001-04-17

Although I admit that I am new to the music of Beny More, I really like this CD. Perhaps, as some of the other reviewers seem to indicate, this is not the best showcase of More's music, but if you are new to Latino music, especially Cuban, this is probably a good place to start.

Each track has some variation in it, so that you don't feel like you're listening to the same thing over and over. All of the songs have a wonderful old sound to them, bringing to mind the music of the old dance clubs of the 1940s and 1950s. If you are considering buying this CD, the music in this collection reminds me a great deal of the music of Desi Arnaz, which he sometimes performed on the "I Love Lucy Show," only this is far better.

OK but not my favorite of Beny.......2000-09-21

This CD is OK but I disagree with a previous reviewer (agree with another one); this CD is by far not the best of Beny. I recommend the BMG Tropical Series "The Very Best of Beny More", Vol. 1 and 2, not only in song selections but in recording quality. I grew up in Cuba in the 50's and playing those two CDs is like going back to my teens listening to Beny on the radio. WOW....

Best single Beny More CD available.......2000-08-18

Good (although unadventurous) selection of Beny's mambos and boleros at a reasonable price. Those wanting more will have to look at the discs on BMG Tropical (but be quick: BMG are not supporting this label very well) or else, if you want the very early material with Perez Prado, on Tumbao. For that fifth star: Beny's immortal recording of Como Fue, recently resurrected by Ibrahim Ferrer, and how about Dolor Karabali, Beny's own favourite recording?

Not the best of More........2000-06-07

I purchased this collection thinking it was similar to a tape I had of More's best hits. It was a bit ironic to see that More's best hits are not in this collection.

The only ones I really cared for are track 14 and 16. The rest are just too monotonous, although original.

If you buy this CD and listen to More for the first time, you are sure to miss out on the best of his works--not included here!

Despite the U.S. embargo on Cuba--or perhaps because of the forbidden-fruit factor--the music of America's island neighbor is undergoing an upsurge in popularity that rivals the Latin-music heyday of the '50s. For the most part lacking the mainstream music industry's tools--high-tech studios, marketing surveys, pop charts, and ownership by multinational corporations--Cuba has remained free of pressures to bow to the economic bottom line and of the dull homogenization that often results from too much attention paid to profits. In other words, Cuban musicians may be poor but they are free to make music for its own sake. This collection presents a history of Cuban musical creativity from the acoustic country form known as the guajira--represented here by Grupo Raison's authentic-yet-jazz-infused rendering of "Guajira Guantanamera"--through other classic forms that have been diluted over the decades by American handlers--the son, danzon, bolero, mambo, and cha-cha, which was invented by violinist Enrique Jorrin. His "La Enganadora (The Cheat)" was recorded by Orquesta America in 1953, and that track appears here, along with "Cuando Quieras Volver," by the great bandleader Beny More--known as "the barbarian of rhythm" and the real mambo king. Music I grew up with...............1999-10-20

Sounds from this cd filled the store I was visiting and I was instantly returned to my childhood in Habana. A good mix of different styles with the flavor of what cuban music was prior to 1959! If you lived in Cuba before Castro you are sure to enjoy this cd. It touched my roots! If you left Cuba very young....this is the music we heard on the radio and danced to All the time. "Babalu" and "EL Manisero" are classics. "Me lo dijo Adela" would have made the collection complete. If you liked "the Buena Vista Social Club" cd, you will love "Cuba Eterno"
