This is the sound of a brilliant career reaching its apex. Unless Gloria Estefan surprises us with a turn no one could anticipate, MI TIERRA will go down as the best music she ever produced.

That's no small statement, since Ms. Estefan has been wowing fans with one top-selling album after another from back in the days of the Miami Sound Machine.

I first came to know Gloria as a Latin singer while I was living in Latin America. Only subsequently did I become fully exposed to her English-language pop persona. Though Gloria was only two when her family emigrated to the US from Cuba and is therefore fully bilingual and bicultural, my opinion has always been that she excels when performing in Spanish.

MI TIERRA may well prove the point.

Backed up by rhythm and sound of astonishing consistency, Gloria sings a dozen winners (that's twelve out of twelve) on this CD despite some daring and unconventional moves ('Montuno' and 'Tradición').

Surprisingly, her opening gambit ('Con los años que me quedan') got the lion's share of this album's air time in spite of it not being the strongest piece of the puzzle. The gem among the dozen is 'Mi Tierra', which I believe to be the most poignant musical statement of the emigrant's dilemma ever peformed. There is a moment in this song when, amidst the nostalgic description of old Habana's streets and alleys, Ms. Estefan asks, 'Can I ever go back there? ... *Yo no sé*' (= 'I don't know'). The three-syllable staccato of her ambiguous reply touches every emigrant's secret knowledge that you can never truly go back to where you came from. Her unexpected response to a self-posed question leaps out and grabs you by the throat. It is one of Gloria's finest moments and a hypothetical pickle that events in her native land may soon give her an opportunity to confirm or refute.

'No hay mal que por bien no venga' projects the Latin American spunk and survivability that make it a region to grow old in with a smile.

Estefan has never had the pure horsepower of Latin stalwarts like, say, the late Celia Cruz. But whatever she has lacked in natural talent has been more than compensated by the class, consistency, and good public citizenship that she has exercised now into the stage of mature motherhood.

I hope she exceeds MI TIERRA. But I can't imagine it happening.

I Forgot How Good This Was.......2006-09-06

I'm not a big Gloria Estefan fan. She has some good songs and makes, at best, average albums. Gloria was always a singles artist to me, but this is pure delight from beginning to end. Great production and you feel Gloria Estefan put 100% into this. Great latin songs and the liner notes are great for interpretation and explanation.

If you get any Gloria Estefan album this is it.

CLASSIC.......a great additon in latin music history!!.......2006-02-16

I'm not a fan of Gloria Estafan's pop/english music, but I was so impressed the first time I heard this when it was releasad and it still is as incredible.

Not only is each song great, but they really raised the bar for production in latin music. The sound is stellar. I'm sure the fact that Ms. Estefan chose to work with the best musicians in the business helped.

Do not even think twice....buy this album and you will not be dissapointed.

Wonderful Spiritual Music from Colombia.......2003-11-23

Like many Colombians, I've known about Carlos Vives from his days of Clasicos de la Provincia in 1993. Vives takes provincial music from Colombia (vallenato and cumbia, among numerous others) and infuses them with a spirituality and depth that makes the music all the more worthy. El Amore De Mi Tierra is no different. Vives pulls from various fountains of Colombian music and turns them into flowing, rhythmic world music that is accessable to all peoples. The collection here is very good. While "Fruta Fresca" is the track that most people are familiar with, "La Piragua" is definately the best track on the album. An update of a classic Colombian cumbia song, Vives's take on "La Piragua" turns the song into a lush fable full of earthy melodies and a spirit of the Amazon without forskaing the song's musical roots. For those who are new to Carlos Vives, this album is a great place to start.

Great Album.......2003-10-20

I first heard this record when I was in Colombia about 3 years ago and have subsequently bought the CD 6 times. Every visitor from the US or UK who hears it asks me about it and I usually end up giving it away.
Knowing Spanish will help you enjoy this more - but even without it, the rythm of the music feeds into you.
I own several of CVivas's CDs, but keep coming back to this one.

Opino que los musicos son las verdaderas estrellas de Amor de Mi Tierra. Me encanta el acordeon y los arreglos son buenos.

La Mejor Cancion

No puedo explicar exactamente porque no me gustaban la mayoria de las canciones. Una que SI me encanto era 19 de Noviembre. Es excelente, bailable, buena letra. Tiene de todo.

En fin. Si eres super super fanatica de Carlos Vives, comprate este disco! Si no, pues, ahorrate los 15 dolares.

Aparte, quisiera ver mas musica de distintas artistas Colombianas--especialmente algunas caras negras. Shakira y Carlos son OK, pero son los unicos en Colombia que saben cantar?

Carlos, you had me at the cover art to this CD! You didn't have to sing about wanting to be my mouth-exploding Caramelo that also melts in my hands!

A pretty face will catch one's eye, but this guy has got the audio thing going on too. He sings in that lovely Colombian accent that tends to drop final consonants, as if they were extraneous candy wrappers ("honey, just throw those dirty candy wrappers out of the bus window"). All of this over a lilting Afro-Caribe beat, you know, the one Paul Simon wrested for "Graceland" and "Rythym of the Saints". But this is home-cooked Vallenato, leg/hip candy at its finest.

High boiling point, hard-ball confectionry. Um, um, um.

I love all the songs in this CD I can't stop playing it. He has such a beautiful voice and in the slow songs he sounds so romantic. I recomend it to anybody that wants to listen to good Mexican music.

One of the finest prog albums I've heard from Spain.......2007-06-05

Mezquita was a prog rock band from Spain that managed two albums, 1979's Recuerdo de mi Tierra and 1981's Califas del Rock. But it's Recuerdos de mi Tierra (released on the Chapa label, same label that gave us Crack's Si Todo Hiciera) that their reputation rests on (their second album, which I hadn't heard, is largely ignored, and apparently not very good). It's really hard to believe there's still room for great prog in 1979, but then this was Spain, having some catch up work (their prog scene didn't really take off until 1975), and Mezquita was that prime example of great prog being done in an era where much of the rest of Europe and North America were caught up in punk, disco, and new wave.

This was a group that included lots of ethnic influences in their prog, flamenco being the obvious one (I really think their brand of flamenco prog blows Triana right out of the water), with some North African influences. Lots of great guitar and keyboard interplay, keyboards including Hammond organ and Moog or ARP (I believe), and I swear I might hear some Mellotron (can't tell), but what I do know is real strings are used on some of the cuts. The vocals are often not unlike Triana's Jesus de la Rosa, meaning in that typical dramatic Spanish style typical of flamenco, so it's really an acquired taste, but I had no problem adapting to the vocals here. There's no mistaking where this album came from, that is Spain. Since 1979 wasn't exactly a good year for prog, this is probably one of the finest I've heard from that year. If you enjoy prog with that unique Spanish touch, you can't go wrong with this album!

Excellent album of Spanish progressive rock Flamingo style guitar. Overall is reminiscent of Italian prog, but has a unique flavor. Fairly typical lineup of guitar, keyboards, drums and bass. Songs have a melody that stays with you. If you like Italian prog, you should enjoy this. Recommend highly

MIGUEL FLETA IS THE MOST INTERESTING TENOR I HAVE EVER HEARD. I ENJOY HIS ART FROM TIME TO TIME.

THE FIRST FIVE SELECTIONS ON THIS DISC CAPTURE HIS 18TH-19TH CENTURY VOCAL TECHNIQUE (later named bel canto)AT ITS BEST AND IT ENABLES HIM TO VARY NOT ONLY HIS DYNAMIC RANGE IN EXTREMES BUT ALSO HIS TONAL COLOR. HE HAS ASTOUNDING AGILITY. HE HAS A VERY LARGE VOICE STRONG ON THE TOP AND THE BOTTOM. HOWEVER, WHEN HE SINGS VERISMO AND FORTE, HE LOSES SOLIDITY AND INTONATION.

IT SEEMS THAT HE DID NOT PERFECT THE BEL CANTO TECHNIQUE WITH REGARD TO BREATHING AND HIS FABLED PIANI AND DIMINUENDI OFTEN SWITCH REGISTERS AUDIBLY AND WOBBLE THEIR WAY HOME. YET HE SINGS WITH GREAT HEART AND AFFECTINGLY.

A simply wonderful singer and a fine album.......2005-09-22

Milly Quezada deserves the over used title "Queen of Merenque", because her singing is technically about the best that is out there in the Latin singing world, and expressively, has few rivals. She has always shown herself to be extremely versatile in how she shades different styles of merengue and occupies the unique essence of every song.

Now Milly shows us that her way with bachata is at least as impressive, even more so. There is nothing more you could ask for in her wonderful phrasing, varied timbre, and perfect vocal delivery.

Manuel Tejada has provided us with superb arrangements, even by his amazing standards. The first four songs are really wonderful, from the plaintive "Penas", to the the ingratiating duet "Pideme", the delightful "Que se Mueren de Envida" and the lovely "Mesita de Noche." The next three songs are not quite in the class, but still very fine. There is also a Juan Luis Guerra song, and in no way does she copy his singing - she puts her own stamp on it, as does Tejada.

There follows a merengue Pideme, which is a nice variation, tho less good than the bachata. The merengue Un Nuevo Amor, is the least interesting track on the CD. I would have liked to have seen one or two more bachatas on this CD - with two "version" cuts, 10 tracks is a little slim, and the CD comes to a less important conclusion than I would like.

Despite this criticism, Tresoros de Mi Tierra is a must-have.

El disco es completamente bueno desde la primera cancion hasta la ultima. No dudaba que Milly hiciera un trabajo asi, pero es un trabajo musical increible. El arreglo, la combinacion de voces. De esta produccion clasifico como la canciones sobresalientes son: Pideme, Que Se Mueran De Envidia, Mesita De Noche, Dos Rosas, Antologia De Caricias, Un Nuevo Amor.

MARAVILLOSO!.......2000-11-29

Este CD es increiblemente bueno. La "Reina Del Merengue" por fin grabo un disco de bachatas. Esta maravillosa produccion estuvo a cargo del maestro Manuel Tejada, para SONY. Una excelente variedad de romanticas bachatas que con la voz unica de Milly Quezada lo hacen un exito. Los mejores temas del disco lo son "Que Se Mueran De Envidia", "Pideme" (a duo con Fernandito Villalona), "Mesita De Noche", "Antologia De Caricias" y "Un Nuevo Amor". El disco tambien inluye el tema "Burbujas De Amor" del gran Juan Luis Guerra. Pero la REINA no se podia quedar sin incluir merengue en este disco "Tesoros De Mi Tierra", por tal razon se incluyeron las versiones en merengue de los temas "Un Nuevo Amor" y "Pideme" (a duo con Miguel Vasquez). Todos los temas estan excelentes y tienen unos arreglos unicos. Sinceramente Milly Quezada tiene voz para cantar de todo...merengue, balada, bachata, salsa y todo lo que se llame musica. Cuando hay talento y una voz como la de Milly todo es posible.

Classic American children's songs (Old MacDonald, Hokey Pokey, This Land is Your Land, etc.) Orozco first sings the song in Spanish, then in English. Well sung and lots of fun!
