With the help of some friends (James Taylor and Alison Krauss lend some vocal support), the trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor have created yet another fascinating hybrid of chamber music and bluegrass. This follow-up to 1996's Appalachia Waltz is filled with highly lyrical string passages, a homage or two to Copland, and plenty of tracks where Meyer's bass vamps with the best of them. This is reflective (and relaxing) music, lacking the intricate structure of classical music and the rough edges of folk. But, boy, is it catchy! Yo-Yo Ma fans may be disappointed to hear that--aside from the gorgeous "Duet for Cello and Bass"--the cellist takes more of a supportive role on this disc. Still, this is fun music, more intimate than Short Trip Home (Meyer's other crossover project for Sony), but still lively (just check out "1B" or "Caprice for Three"). --Jason Verlinde

These are flawless preformances of great music by some of the most talented artists on the planet. Slumber My Darling will leave you so relaxed you'll have to remember to breathe. The reels will bring you to your feet. This music reaches the soul as well as the ear.

I suppose you will enjoy this if you really like Yo-Yo Ma at his most boring. This is glorified elevator music and about as interesting.

I actually heard this cd while having a root canal done at the dentist's office. I find the music so wonderful and the vocal segments are great. It does make you feel like you are walking the Appalachian Trail...and makes a root canal painless!

Superb concert.......2005-08-02

I have bought two copies of this disc -- one for my car. The music is wonderful, and the performances are memorable. There's a DVD version, which is equally good. The performers obviously loved working together, and that's fully evident.

Too Studied.......2005-06-22

Two of my favorite CDs in the last couple of years were "Obrigado Brazil" and "In Full Swing" by Yo Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor respectively. I found both of those CDs to be fine examples of genre-busting joyful music making. So when I saw these guys paired here, I snapped it up. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.

The music throughout most of the CD sounds too labored, too studied. It is, frankly, not that inspiring. The playing throughout is, of course, of the highest calibre and the recorded sound excellent. But there is no hint of the exhuberance of Folk or Bluegrass which is the supposed inspiration for the disc. The guest spots by James Taylor and Alison Krauss are good but they sound like outtakes from their own CDs, these songs are out of context here. (But note how many other Amazon reviews reference their contributions as reasons for loving the CD. Perhaps so many five star ratings because these people need broader musical exposure?)

Too many critics over intellectualize. I base my ratings on one simple criterion: How much did the music move me? In this case, not much.

I am writing this trying to correct a mistake in the Amazon listing for this CD.

Please note that for reasons unclear some of the information on this page, including several of the user reviews, refer to the BGO remastered 2for1 CD that contains the Trower albums LONG MISTY DAYS and IN CITY DREAMS, yet the item for sale on this page is NOT THAT!!!!

The item for sale here is the original Trower release of LONG MISTY DAYS on CD from Chrysalis records.

The UPC code for the Chrysalis CD is 094632110725 and that is what this page is properly indexed as, and that is what the sellers here (including myself) are offering.

Any reference to the 2for1 BGO release, or anything on the label "Capital" instead of Chrysalis is a mistake on this page. I am trying to get Amazon to fix this, but unfortunately I have no control over that!

I hope this helps clear up any confusion and prevents any buyer disappointment if they buy this but expect to get the BGO version.

Jimmy Page Who? Give Me Trower Anyday!.......2007-02-18

I see and read these silly guitarist and rock documentaries and they all go on about Jimmy Page this and Jimi Hendrix that - yawn. It's as if there is an industry of Jimmies. What why isn't Robin Trower ever mentioned? He's just as good a player as those guys are. I used to sit in my bedroom listening to Trower's "Long Misty Days" and wonder why Page and Clapton were the guitar gods, when Trower and a host of others weren't the exalted ones? If only "Days" and "Bridge Of Sighs" were released on one disc. I'm afraid a law would have to be passed demanding any kid who was thinking of playing guitar buy it, learn it and live it.

I don't know why they insist on packaging 2 albums on 1 disc but it drives me crazy. Anyway, Long Misty Days is a nice effort by Robin. The problem is that he is so tame in the studio that you really have to see him live to appreciate all he can do. Still, it's a fun album that makes for some good party music.
In City Dreams is horrible. It was the beginning of the end for Robin being a popular artist. Ironically, that's what he was trying to do, be more "mainstream". But writing lame pop songs with annoying electronic gimmicks did nothing but alienate his fan base.Because of this I have to take a star away from the overall rating.

Excellent CD--brought back memories of my childhood as my Dad played it all the time.

I remember this album Music For Lovers Only. But the version my parents had was the two 45-RPM records in the mini double jacket. Easy listening music expanded through the 1960s like 101 Strings and other orchestras plus more and more FM radio stations played the music in stereo through the 1970s. They were slowly replaced with rock and roll stations in stereo. Its sad to see things change but people will keep up with the times regardless. Some of this music may be found on AM radio stations today where rock and roll was once before. At least I'm happy to know that such music is being released on CD.

Irresistible mood!.......2005-09-11

Jackie Gleason was more than simple name to become a status reference. Somehow this ensemble was the American response in the 60's to Frank Pourcel, and Paul Mauriat in France, Norrie Paramor and Acker Bilk in U.K or Bert Kaempfert from Germany.
The musical legacy of this fabulous ensemble will be a milestone in the music. The magnificent arrangements and the exquisite good taste will endure as long there is passion for the light music in some corner of the planet.

AS I WAS READING SOME OF THE REVIEWS FOR THIS WONDERFUL JACKIE GLEASON ALBUM, I WAS APPALLED AT SOME REVIEWERS TOTAL LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE RECORDINGS OF THIS PERIOD. I WILL TRY TO OFFSET THAT CONFUSION.

FIRST OF ALL, ALL POPULAR ALBUMS PRIOR TO 1955 WERE OF THE 10 INCH VARIETY....SO THE MOST ANY ALBUM COULD HAVE WERE 8 TUNES.

THE JAZZ ALBUMS OF THE TIME, HAD EVEN LESS BECAUSE OF THE LENGHT OF THE TRACKS. ONLY THE CLASSICAL ALBUMS WERE OF THE 12 INCH VARIETY, AND THAT WAS BECAUSE OF THE OBVIOUS EXTENDED LENGHT OF THE COMPOSITIONS. I WILL EXPAND MORE ON THIS LATER AS FAR AS THIS CD IS CONCERNED.

NO 2, I AM SICK AND TIRED OF LISTENERS WHO BY ALBUMS OF THIS PERIOD OR EARLIER AND COMMENT THEY WERE DISSAPOINTED IT WAS IN MONORAUL AND NOT STEREO.
WELL, STEREO WAS NOT PUT IN POP ALBUMS UNTIL 1956 AT THE EARLIEST AND THEY WERE MOSTLY EXPERIMENTAL(SOME OF THE EARLY STAN KENTON TRACKS OF THE MID 50'S WERE IN STEREO BUT NEVER RELEASED UNTIL ONLY A FEW YEARS AGO). STEREO WAS NOT REALLY UNLEASHED TO THE MASSES UNTIL 1958. SO PLEASE DON'T TAKE STARS OFF BECAUSE YOUR EARS CAN NOT TAKE MONO. DEAL WITH THE TECHNOLOGY OF THE TIME PEOPLE.

THE FIRST LP "MUSIC FOR LOVERS ONLY" WAS THE 10 INCH LP. WITH 8 SONGS ONLY. THE LADY FROM GA WHO SAYS SHE HAS THE FULL 16 SONGS ON HER ALBUM, HAS A CAPITOL RE-ISSUE. IT'S NOT THE ALBUM AS ORIGINALLY CONCEIVED. SO WHEN YOU GET THIS LP , YOU WILL GET THE EXACT 10 INCH VERSION. THE REMAINDER OF THE CD IS THE "MUSIC TO MAKE YOU MISTY" AND THAT IS THE ORIGINAL 12 INCH RECORDING. NOW THAT LP MAY HAVE HAD 16 SONGS ON IT. IF SO, CC SHOULD HAVE ADDED THE EXTRA 4 TRACKS, HOWEVER, BEING THAT THE LP WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 1959, I AM PRETTY SURE THAT THE LP HAD ONLY 12 SONGS ON IT(WHICH WAS THE STANDARD BY THAT TIME). SO , IF INDEED THAT WAS THE CASE,CC WAS FAITHFUL TO BOTH ORIGINAL LPS.

THE MUSIC OF COURSE IS TOP NOTCH, IT IS NOT MUSZAC OF ELEVATOR MUSIC. UNFORTUNATELY, NO ONE UNDER 40 WOULD EVEN KNOW ALBUMS LIKE THESE EXIST ...IT'S TO THEIR DETRIMENT AND OF COURSE, I BLAME THE RADIO PROGRAMERS....BUT THAT'S ANOTHER STORY.

Watch Out For Mono Tracks.......2003-11-04

Unless you're especially enamoured of the 1952 monaural edition of Music For Lovers Only, you'll find the first album disappointing. Neither Amazon, Collectors' Choice, nor EMI Music make it clear that Music For Lovers Only (the more desirable of the two album set) is completely monaural, in spite of the fact that Capitol actually released the same album in stereo in 1959.

OFFBEAT, BUT GOOD LISTENING!.......2007-02-05

FINALLY WAS ABLE TO GET A COLLECTION OF JACK BLANCHARD & MISTY MORGAN. I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED THEIR COMICAL SONGS. THIS ONE IS A GOOD MIX OF DIFFERENT STYLES. ENJOYABLE, YET OFFBEAT.

I like this CD. most of all, that it has Tennesee Birdwalk on it, probably that is the best known hit from these two. I must listen to this CD a few more times to determine what I think of the quality of the recordiing. first time around it sounds pretty good.

An album not to be missed.......2005-12-02

This album is a superb compilation of the best of Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan's songs many of which have been worldwide hit records. I discovered them early in 2005 and I am familiar with many of these songs from their previous albums which I own, but I am delighted to hear the additional songs which I had not heard before. Jack & Misty are uniquely talented Country music artists. Their harmonies are both superb and distinctive with Jack's bass voice blending so well with Misty's rich alto.

Jack is an real artist with words having the ability to 'paint a picture with words'. He composed the majority of the songs they sing and their songs cover the whole range of life experience, as the title of the album so aptly says "Life & Death {and everything else in between}".

Interspersed with the more serious songs are some of their 'crazy' songs which so well illustrate their terrific sense of humour. These include Tennessee Birdwalk, which was a #1 hit and won them a Grammy Nomination in 1970, Humphrey The Camel, Legendary Chicken Fairy, If Eggs Had Legs, the catchy Dum Song and Cows (just listen to the lyrics) :) If you share their sense of humour you will not disappointed.

Other great tracks which relate to life's experiences include The Clock of St. James, You've Got Your Troubles (I've Got Mine), the poignant There Must Be More To Life (Than Growing Old), It Seems Like There Ain't No Going Home, Shadows Of The Leaves, Big Black Bird (Spirit Of My Love), Somewhere In Virginia In The Rain, Changin' Times, Place In Your Mind and Sunset Train. You can easily relate to the experiences in life that inspired these songs.

The two songs new to me, Don't It Make You Want To Go Home and Chapel Hill, are welcome additions which also tug at the heart strings.

Jack & Misty are both accomplished keyboard artists playing much of their own background music - Jack also plays guitars. They are accompanied by some of the best musicians around.

Jack & Misty have to be heard to be appreciated. Their songs just get better with the playing. They have something about them that gives them a "must listen again ... and again .... and again" quality. No how many times I listen to them I just NEVER, ever get tired of hearing them. I just grow to love them more each day.

Many of these songs can be heard on their website [...] ... just in case you need convincing.

EASTWOOD IS ALSO A GREAT SONGWRITER.......2007-06-11

This is a "semi" career spanning CD (and the only decent one in existence) of the movie themes from some great Eastwood movies. The earlier pieces are from his days in TV and transition to movies. The more mature work with Lennie Niehaus displays Clint's artistry, no not only as an actor, award winning director, but great composer. My only complaint is the disc is missing the off-beat and totally original jazzy "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" from THE GAUNTLET.

The disc does contain his wonderful A PERFECT WORLD and THE UNFORGIVEN. Why Eastwood never won an Oscar for some of his original scores is a mystery to me. He is more celebrated as a director than as an actor only because he won more awards in that category and his acting style was known for it's low-keyed and reactionary style. But the Clint Eastwood the musician cannot be dismissed and here is that more than proves his versatility. A known jazz lover, for fans of that genre, give a listen to WHY SHOULD I CARE from "True Crime", another great Eastwood composition.

The remainder of the disc is a salute to Eastwood and his work with a heavy emphasis on the jazz.

First rate. I've been a fan since his directoral debut in PLAY MISTY FOR ME. Little did I realize what a great composer he would turn out to be.

A must for any fans as there are no single soundtacks available from his movies featuring his work.

Play Misty For Me.......2005-12-20

Nearly an hour and 20 minutes of "Music For the Movies of Clint Eastwood". What fan wouldn't be happy with this CD? 23 Tracks, and a great compilation. From the early TV days, the "Theme from Rawhide"(this was about the time I fell in love with Clint, I think I was about 8)performed by Frankie Lane, and Spaghetti Western, the "The, Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"(does anyone REALLY know the words to this one, and does it really matter?)to the romantic Doe Eyes"(the love theme from "Bridges of Madison County", the music will have you reliving the great moments from great films that just say Clint!

The first half of the album features both Clint's own works and the fabulous talented composers he has worked with. Ennio Moricone's oh so recognizable style("The Good, The Bad and the Ugly"), the moving music of Lennie Niehaus("Pale Rider"), the haunting sounds from Lalo Schfrin("Dirty Harry Theme", where you will relive Clint doing the, "Do you feel lucky punk?" speech), and some other wonderful musicians including the great Civil War and Western sounding "Theme from Outlaw Josey Wales", by Jerry Fielding, and Erroll Garner's"Play Misty For Me", a gorgeous piano rendition. Some of Clint's own works, included are "Claudia's Theme" from "Unforgiven" "Kate's Theme" from "Absolute Power", "Big Fran's Baby" from "A Perfect World", and of course the mesmerizing and above mentioned "Doe Eyes".

Second half is a 10 part instrumental suite, "Clint Eastwood, An American Filmmaker Suite". This is music composed and conducted by Lennie Niehaus for the PBS "American Masters" documentary " Eastwood: Out of the Shadows" The music tells Clint's story musically, and it flows beautifully and emotionally.It has a little of everyting, including some great jazzy numbers. The orchestration and the musicians capture the journey wonderfully. For list of all 23 track titles, see buying info. You can also listen to samples from there.

The quality of the CD is excellent. A pamphlet with some production notes, and the tracks is included. There are some great pix of Clint as well. It doesn't have ALL his films included. Hopefully the music form "Kelly's Heroes"("Burning Bridges) and "The Beguiled"(more from Lalo Schifrin) will make the sequel album!

Take it in your car and listen to it when you are stuck in traffic, and it will take you somewhere else for a while.Just say "Play Misty For Me" and hit track 8. Highly recommended for the Eastwood fan. And for those that can't get enough, I would also recommend the soundtrack to "Bridges of Madison County". One of the most romantic albums I ever heard.

There's really not too much to say about this, except that any big fan of "Clint Eastwood", or at least the majority of these movies should like this. What I enjoy most are the tracks from his westerns, as they all set a nice mood, but the rest are very good as well. I can't help but think this would have been twice as good had it contained dialogue from each of these films too. Overall a great collection for the fan. After all, if there's one thing "Clint" knows about as much as his acting, it's his music.

not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

The Sandpipers have scored another hit with this second blended album CD - Misty Roses/The Wonder of You. It combines beautifully arranged folk songs ('Today' and 'I Believed It All') with popular hits of the day ('Windmills of Your Mind', 'And I Love Her', 'Misty Roses' and 'The Wonder of You') and The Sandpipers perform them brilliantly. Playing Time - 48:53 -- Besides being their fifth album, "Stories" is also a tenth anniversary musical celebration for Oregon-based Misty River, a quartet of women whose marketing catchphrase accurately promotes their "compelling voices of acoustic Americana." Meeting at bluegrass jams and open mics back in 1997, the still unsigned band began performing full-time and touring cross-country about 2000 in their motor home named Annabelle. It's just a matter of time before a national label like Rounder Records or Sugar Hill takes note of their potential and musicianship of Dana Abel (accordion), Carol Harley (guitar, banjo), Chris Kokesh (fiddle), and Laura Quigley (bass). Produced by Todd Phillips, he mixes in some percussion on five tracks.

Besides their four well-blended vocals, Misty River has a number of other strengths - impressive songwriting, unique covers, poignant arrangements, and enticing understated instrumentation that all lend immediacy to their story songs. The emotional depth on "Stories" is drawn out of ballads about people, places, memories, and just plain ol' life in general in a song like Carol Harley's "Life is Good." Or take Dana Abel's lively "Slice of Life," for instance. The characters encountered on Portland city bus #36 include "tired folks, wired folks and those in between." Dana also wrote music for "Louisa" based on a poem by Alice Anne Martineau. While there are many versions of the traditional "Barbara Ellen," Misty River's melancholic rendition has a hard-hearted edge brought home by the fiddle after the rose and briar tie their post-mortem true love's knot. Each beautiful song offers its own observations about human experiences, attitudes, or beliefs.

Popular for the last few decades in China, a dreamy "Gan Lan Shu (The Olive Tree)" has Chris and Dana singing nostalgically in Chinese about a hometown far away. The leanest singer/songwriter fare is Chris Kokesh's solo self-penned "Time Goes By," accompanied only by her guitar. "I cut the pieces from my memory / All tired out and worn I have held them so many times But now they're heavy in my arms." Perhaps a little harmony on the chorus would've embellished the arrangement. Drawing upon material from another brilliant songwriter, Steve Young's "Old Memories (Man Nothing To Me)" has a similar theme of time passing and flying by. I wonder if the girls learned the song from Del McCoury's 1992 cover of it. Or if they picked up Daniel Lanois' "Black Hawk" from Emmy Lou's Wrecking Ball album that he produced. Regardless of how Misty River finds their material, their radiant "Stories" album shows that they are graceful interpreters who can be pleasantly nostalgic, blissfully romantic, or thoughtfully sensual. The soothing melody-driven result is Misty River's charming je ne sais quoi. Full of imagination and imagery, the album takes us on journey. Even though the road is long and slow, these four women keep right on rolling and always remembering and calling for a watchful eye over their friends and fans along the way. I bought the cassette tape verison of this work several years ago. I wanted to have some background music for at home activities such as: drawing, reading, and meditation.

I own about 30 other CDs and tapes of this kind of music. Misty Forest Morning is by far the best of the lot.

This very calming mix of flute, guitar, and water sounds will propel you instantly into a theta state.

Don't leave your body without it!

I didn't know anything about June Christy until I heard one of her songs on public radio. I knew I could get it on Amazon, so I ordered this CD. What a nice sound -- smooth, mellow, a real trip back to another time in pop and jazz. I would recommend this if you like the standards.

The Misty Miss Christy.......2005-08-12

Sitting in a bar, listening to Kenton's Dynaflow. That was oh, so long, long ago, yet I heard it played on a local radio station last month. Kenton's timeless. And following Dynaflow, Kenton comes back with Tampico as sung by June Christy who lives on through CDs like The Misty Miss Christy. How can you not be romantic listening to such a velvety and seductive voice as June's? And try to explain to me how anyone can be romantic when today's music jumps and jerks and dancing looks more like kick-boxing than dancing? Or when a great voice with range today is one which can scream the highest note and warble on the way down. Dancing is dancing, not jerking and grunt. Dancing is touching bodies. Try not to touch and not hold someone close when June Christy sings, My Heart Belongs To Only You. Can't be done, Bubba. Romance lives! This is a great CD of one of my all time favorite lady vocalists.

Timeless.......2005-01-10

June Christie in the 50's was what Norah Jones is today: an interpreter of jazz in a unique fashion with a voice of silk. Her renditions of "That's All" and "'Round Midnight" are two of the best recorded by anyone, anytime. Fantastic styling.

Sublime and Silky.......2004-04-29

Yes indeed there is a sublime misty quality to her voice. If you like Mel Torme, then June is for you. There was a wonderful and unique tone to American women singers of the 40's and 50's. They possessed a power and perfect pitch that rode high on the wave of a full orchestra. June is no exception and whatever you are doing you have to just sit for a while to listen to her wonderful interpretations. I'm not sure why she never made it as big as her counterparts, perhaps her voice was a little too unique for her time. But today, judging by the wonderful reviews she receives here, there is a new appreciation for this artist. One of the greats and if this is your first album there can be no finer introduction.
