Pyramid Power, all the way.......2006-05-10

This is one of my favorite Alan Parsons Project Album. I was randomly surfing my Dad's iPod, and he was once a huge Parsons fan. I found the song What Goes Up..., and I played it. It was the only song on this album that he had, but I absolutely loved. I knew I needed to have more of this guy's work.

I was kept from getting this album for a long time, unfortunately, but once I did get it, I fell in love. The entire album is centered lyrically around pyramids, and musically around one four note arrangement. I am not good with music, but I noticed the sequence in Voyager, The Eagle Will Rise Again, In the Lap of the Gods, and I think some other places, too.

The album opens with the instrumental Voyager. This is a very good instrumental, but it is short, and ends about when it should be beginning. This is not a bad thing though, as it transitions perfectly into What Goes Up....

What Goes Up... was, for the longest time, my favorite song. It is a very mystical song, and is one of Woolfson's best lyrical efforts, and the instrumental interlude in the middle is not overdone (as it is in Silence and I and Ammonia Avenue, neither of which are on this album). This was the first Project song I heard, and it's still one of my favorites.

The Eagle Will Rise Again is one of my favorite Project ballads. This was the Project's strongpoint (ballads, that is), and this is no exception. It is absolutely amazing. Next comes my least favorite song, One More River. While Lenny Zakatek generally sings my favorite Project songs, he also generally sings my least favorite, and this falls into the second category. He is very talented, but his talents go to waste here.

Can't Take It With You is a weak effort by the Project, but it is better than One More River. It is about crossing to the afterlife, but the lyrics are a bit superficial.

The album returns to form with the very good intrumental (with chanting) In the Lap of the Gods. It is long, but also good.

Then comes Pyramania, the closest thing to a title track this album has. It is an absolutely wonderful song about Pyramid Power, making fun of the legend that if you put a razor blade in a pyramid, it got sharper (but they do that anywhere). This spurred people to put pyramids everywhere, claiming various effects (i.e. improving your food). This is the most unique Project song there is, and one of the best.

Hyper-Gamma-Spaces follows, and is the best instrumental on the album. It is fun and upbeat. The album ends with Shadow of a Lonely Man, the second and lesser of the two ballads on the album, though still quite good.

This is an excellent starting place for those just getting into the Project, and a must-have for fans.

Good British symphonic pop that is heading in a poppier direction .......2006-05-06

Released in 1978, the Pyramid album more or less follows the formula of the very good I Robot album (1977), although it does not seem quite as inspired - to me at any rate. There are however, some very nice and heavily orchestrated pop songs and atmospheric synthesizer pieces that make this a very listenable and enjoyable album. Conceptually, the album (and I quote from the liner notes) "seeks to amplify the haunting echoes of the past and explore the unsolved mysteries of the present" - hence, the Pyramid theme. The musicians on Pyramid include Alan Parsons (acoustic guitar); David Paton (bass guitar and acoustic guitar); Stuart Elliott (drums); Ian Bairnson (electric and acoustic guitars); and Eric Woolfson (synthesizers and additional vocals). The vocalists (and there are several, including Colin Blunstone) are pretty good and their voices work well with the track they were selected for. With respect to the orchestration, string and brass parts are scattered across the album, in addition to passages that feature a choir. Both the orchestra and the choir were directed by Andrew Powell. Finally, although there are saxophone parts on the album, they are not credited. The nine tracks on the album are in the 2-6 minute range and alternate atmospheric and interesting instrumentals (Voyager, Hyper Gamma Spaces, and In the Lap of the Gods), with some very well-written and heavily orchestrated pop songs. Of the nine tracks, Pyramania is the weakest (it is "quirky" in a contrived new-wave manner) and contributes absolutely nothing to the recording, although it does not reduce the overall quality. Alan Parsons not only produced this album, but engineered extremely well-recorded albums including two by Pink Floyd (Atom Heart Mother (1970) and Dark Side of the Moon (1973)) and as such, the recording quality of this album is very high. All in all, this is a good album of British symphonic pop and is recommended along with Tales of Mystery and Imagination (1976) and I Robot (1977). This trilogy of albums comprises the most interesting music the entire late 1970's British symphonic pop genre had to offer.

A smooth flowing melodic trance.......2006-03-11

Alan Parsons was assistant engineer on The Beatles "Let It Be" and "Abbey Road" which was only the beginning of his career. He later was the engineer of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of The Moon". Additionally, he produced the album "Year of The Cat" by Al Stewart. Obviously he has impressed many with his engineering talents and he rose to the top to form The Alan Parsons Project (with partner Eric Woolfson) in 1975. I was taken in by this progressive rock group around 1980 and had some catching up to do after hearing the albums "Tales of Mystery..." and "I Robot" then the song 'What Goes Up' from "Pyramid" on a Charlotte AOR station. As a result, I just couldn't get enough of TAPP in the '80s. "Pyramid" is the work of brilliant engineering and an ear pleasing blend of rock and electronic wizardry. Highlights here include the before mentioned plus 'Voyager', 'The Eagle Will Rise Again', 'Can't Take It With You', 'Pyramania' and 'Hyper-Gamma Spaces'. This is good headphone music for sure and my favorite Parsons album.

Alan Parsons Peaks. . . AGAIN!.......2006-01-15

This review can't really be considered objective because I am a huge fan of the man's work. He is the consummate musician, contractor, producer, composer, engineer - I mean, what can't the man do? He's worked with The Beatles, and there's a select few that can say that.

As for Pyramid, it could be loosely considered a concept album, but not nearly as much as Tales of Mystery & Imagination. It's just another brilliant, slightly different, offering from a brilliant, slightly different, artist. For some reason, this album has been hard to find for a long time, so when I saw it on Amazon for a reasonable price, I snapped it up. Probably should have bought ten of them, as I recommend you do. This is every bit as good an introduction to the man's work as anything else, though there isn't a commercial 'hit' on it, proving once again what little commercial success has to do with art.

Buy this - you won't regret it!

I can't think of a good pun on pyramid.......2005-12-27

Pyramid was, for a long time, my favorite album, and What Goes Up... was, for a long time, my favorite song. However, I Robot and Don't Let it Show have since taken those positions, respectively.

When I first listened to Pyramid, I gave all of the songs except for One More River five stars. When I listened to Pyramid for a second time, What Goes Up... and Pyramania stayed at five, and the rest dropped down to four. One More River stayed at three stars.

Voyager is a decent instrumental, but it doesn't get very interesting until it is fifteen seconds more than half over. What Goes Up... is the first Parsons song I ever heard, and is pure bliss. The Eagle Will Rise Again is a fitting ballad for the album. One More River is the only disappointment on the album. It just doesn't speak to me. Can't Take it With You is another strong song. In the Lap of the Gods is a good instrumental, but not among Parsons' best. Pyramania is a very catchy song that is the closest thing to a title track the album has. Once one gets past the silliness and frivolity that the song seems at first glance to emanate, it is possible to appreciate that Pyramania is the most unique Parsons song, and is actually a deep song about the spiritual powers of a pyramid. Hyper-Gamma-Spaces completes a set of three decent, but not particularly excellent, instrumentals. Shadow of a Lonely is a beautiful ballad about death, and a great end to the album, although the first fifty seconds of the song sound like they should be the last fifty seconds.

Still, a great album. Highly recommended.

Roky tribute.......2006-03-29

I hate to admit this but this was my first exposure the width of Roky Erickson's talent. To hear these songs done by bands/musicians that I liked, was to open a whole new door of music to me. Roky deserves better than he has gotten. Hopefully people will keep finding this and going on the discover Roky and other unsung heroes of music.

This is a tribute album to Roky Erickson. Erickson was the lead singer of the 13th Floor Elevator and later performed solo. Roky was (and is) a mentally disturbed individual, who wrote very strange songs. Here, 19 artists perform 18 of his songs ("Reverberation" is covered twice). Most of the performances are good and this album will hopefully bring attention to this cult hero.

Probably because of the GREAT material. Yes, Roky was the mad (? -- he was put in a mental institution for a while) genius behind the Thirteenth Floor Elevators. Most of the covers here are exceptional and come from a variety of folks (ZZ Top, Jesus & Mary Chain, REM, Lou Ann Barton, etc.). I was lucky enough to see Roky soon after he was released from the hospital in the mid-70s (completely weird, he and Willie Nelson showed up unannounced and jammed at a free gig outside of Austin). I'm just pleased that so many artists did such a great job for a somewhat troubled soul.

For the love of melancholy..........2007-07-17

The Luther remake is solid, but not spectacular. After that, its little more a litany of music and lyrics about love gone bad. No dynamics, and very little real emotion. Perhaps indifferent or apathetic could be used to describe the feeling this record evokes; a feeling that is neither too hot or too cold but not just right. Fortunately for us, Lalah's voice is just warm enough to prevent you from wanting to spew this disc out of your collection. She has yet to release record as good as her debut. But then again some of her father's records were a bit uneven, so I guess those genetics extend to Lalah's music also. Still, I'd buy this just because she is just plain beautiful, both physically and vocally. Hopefully the music will catch up someday.

An Awesome CD, from beginning to end.......2007-02-09

Ive had this CD for about a year now, but just started listening to it and I didnt know what I was missing. This CD is awesome. Im currently listening to it while working out everyday. Its 64 minutes long, and by time I start with the smooth How many times, to the mellow "Boston", Ive got my workout in. My favorite jams on this cd are back then, Outrun the sky, Better and better, and Stronger, but the whole cd is just awesome as can be. Lalah shouldnt wait ten years between solo albums again. Im going to pull out the first Lalah Hathaway tonight, featuring the jam Heaven Knows.....

This woman's voice is as beautiful an engaging as she is. The only thing better than this CD is hearing her live in concert. She had all of us at BB Kings singing and riffing with her. I believe that she is the best female artist of this generation after pre and post Bobby Brown Whitney. Buy this CD today you will love it!!!

While Man Alive! may not be the quintessential Stephen Stills album, the venerable singer-songwriter nevertheless enters his sixth decade with passion and fire. Stills has always done his best, most convincing work on the acoustic guitar, and the wood-and-steel material here proves no exception. On "Different Man" (with Neil Young) and "Piece of Me," he draws on his southern roots and demonstrates his uncanny knack for soulful blues. That soulfulness carries over to much of the electric material, whether the danceable, B-3-driven "Around Us," the achingly good "Ole Man Trouble," or the Zydeco-inflected "Acadienne," on which Stills sounds positively loose and unusually comfortable. Some material doesn't work as well--"Drivin' Thunder" (cowritten with Young) suffers from production that's more in tune with 1985 than 2005, and neither "Round the Bend" nor "I Don't Get It" shines with the full-blown brilliance that the artist clearly remains capable of. Still, this sometimes-flawed endeavor is a more-than-welcome return from one of rock's great, underrepresented treasures. --Jedd Beaudoin

Stills' Best Solo Album Since The 70s.......2007-06-28

MAN ALIVE! is Stephen Stills' best album as a solo artist since the 70s albums he did with Manassas. Unlike his interim releases, which were fairly restrained in tone, MAN ALIVE! features a hard-rocking sound that's reminiscent of prime-period material by the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, and the Outlaws, as well as Stills' own 70s work. Stills' advocacy of sanctions against Indonesia inretaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist makes MAN ALIVE! an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

Steve Stills - Still has IT.......2007-01-09

After seeing Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young play in concert in the Fall 0f 2006 it only seemed right to search for a new CD from each of them if THEY had one. Neil Young's CD was a simple choice. It was out there and easy to find for Christmas. Political, activist and what you would expect since 4 days in Ohio. After hearing the songs at the show whether you agreed with the politics or not it was worth getting. Then what about "Man Alive"? After a little Googling it was a definite choice to pick up. If you enjoy Steve Stills I really don't think you will be dissappointed. It is blusey and reminds me of Manassas and if you are a Steve Stills fan you should remember them and even "Super Session" with Season of the Witch! There are driving tunes like "Drivin Thunder" to listen to in your car in traffic and a few heartfelt tunes like "Wounded World" and I don't get it". All in all its a good CD and although you may hear a few threads and melodies that are familiar it does't hurt.

After repeated listening, i've come to the conclusion that those of us who are giving this album four and five stars are doing so because of the sheer exuberance and good will that radiates out of it, rather than its purely musical merits - not that these are particularly lacking. But if you compare it with Stills' first solo effort, or with "Manassas," the difference will literally kick you in the head. This is not the work of the inventive, refined melodist whose complex harmonies variously swam in a Californian mist or echoed some post-modern country. Most songs are straight-out rockers, and several do not work all that well, but it's impossible to resist their energy. "Drivin' Thunder," a surprising Nascar-lovin' ol' boy song has a rhythmic pull that will take your breath away, whether you care to follow the lyrics or not; and I dare you to not find the accordion-driven "Acadienne" utterly infectious, even though in the back of your mind you know you've heard this tune a million times before, at least once by The Band, who did it better.
The whole is very nicely held together by Stills' stock-in-trade swamp-man mumblings, where his bluesy persona accompanied by acoustic guitars creates pockets of clean air in the general excitement: "Piece of Me" is downright mysterious, "Different Man" can't possibly not charm you, as it sounds like Stephen and Neil sat down back in the sixties and just dashed one off for fun; and "Ole Man Trouble" seems to epitomize what Stills tries to achieve on this album: an older soulful sound applied to rhythms and styles from all over the world.
Throughout, Stills sings and plays with admirable feeling and sincerity - the fact that he doesn't sound a bit different from thirty years ago may speak poorly of his ability to progress as an artist, but it will be a tremendous boost to the self-confidence of the people of his generation. The lyrics are pretty basic, except in the case of "Feed the People," which should become some sort of anthem. Finally, there is "Spanish Suite," a sprawling and beautifully put together work that embodies all the qualities and failings of this album and of Stills' creativity during his whole career: it begins with a too-standard four-chord loop which we've come to think of as "Spanish music" and maudlin lyrics Stills has sung many times before; it segues (a la "Judy Blue Eyes") into a lively song of its own, and ends with a terrific jazzy jam, where guest artists, in particular the superlative Herbie Hancock, do for Stills' music what Young, Crosby, and the rest of the sixties' clique did for it elsewhere: they open it up to new and original horizons and let it develop to its full potential. Wisely, Stills stays in the background and lets his friends do their best.

Man Alive is it a great album!.......2006-10-01

Its been nearly 14 years since the man from Buffalo Springfield and CSN&Y.This album is great for any blues fan.Songs like the first track "aint it always" and "feed the people" are splendid work.Joe Vitale lends a hand on several tracks playing keyboards,drums and vocals.Graham Nash and Neil Young also contribute.Where's DaviD Crosby? What too good to play on this album? Ahhhh I'm only kidding! lol.The one track Piece of Me was slow,but I didn'mind.It took me back to the Robert Johnson era.Herbie Hancock does a great job on keyboards on the last track Spanish Suite.He wrote this one and the previous spanish medley "Acadienne". Stephen Stills is the forgotten one in my book.Maybe its because he hasn't had a hit for so long.He keeps off the charts.If you're a blues fan like myself you won't be disapointed with this one.His guitar playing is fabulous and he's an under rated guitar player.ENJOY!

Following hot on the heels of their enormously successful collaboration for The Lion King, Elton John and Tim Rice have once again culled their talents to create another Disney contemporary musical, based this time on Verdi's opera Aida. The album, recorded by some of the biggest talents of pop, country, and R&B, features songs from the stage show, which recounts the well-known tale of a love triangle further complicated by slavery, royalty, and the armed forces. John duets to great effect with country crooner LeAnn Rimes, the enchanting Janet Jackson, and the lovely Lulu of To Sir with Love fame. Lush and lively, the soundtrack hits a hoot of a (decidedly not highbrow) high point with the infectious pop of the Spice Girls warbling the merits of undergarments on "My Strongest Suit" ("Always wear underwear/Anytime, anywhere"). Lenny Kravitz funks things up with "Like Father Like Son." Shania Twain's husky emoting makes a fine pop ballad of the brief "Amneris' Letter." I'm so impressed with this album for several different reasons.
3) It's Elton John
2) I loved all but two of the songs!
1) I usually hate the original broadway cast albums and movie soundtracks. They don't do the songs justice. They usually have chopped up versions of the songs and include unnecessary dialouge.

I'd love to see every musical (broadway or movie) done this way!
I appreciate the b'way versions, but I don't want to listen to them in my car...

This is a very good CD. "Written in the Stars" is an extremely emotional song, and it is my favorite on the album. I would like to see the show on Broadway, but I have to say I don't think it can be too much better than this CD

It takes so much to try to get a musical to make its way upon Broadway. Sometimes you really need to understand how to make it really happen within the passion of the storytelling music. In that case with Elton John, he nearly seemed to make it with Aida. While the music for Broadway always seems to have at least something completely mgaical and a dash of power in it. Sometimes, you really need to understand it, to make it happen, and others don't see it from the start. Although Elton John has had great music for years, at least once in a era, something goes a little flat.

The 1999 Aida, was not a studio album from Elton, but a preview from what was happen on Broadway. The various artists record contains so many different artists in the record including Tina Turner, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, and the upcoming Heather Headley. Before Heather made it as a singer, she made it right here in Aida, on this record. The only decent song that was a hit was Written In The Stars, which Elton performed with Leann Rimes. The song was also the last song Elton cracked Billboard's Top 40. Still, there really wasn't a lot of enjoyment within most of the record, and it fell into a sleeper. Considering that Elton is already planning on making another smash musical on Broadway, hopefully he'll do better with the concept record.

When it does come to making it on Broadway, it isn't really anything exciting, unless it truly is a smash, and Aida is a smash on Broadway, just not the record. Still, if you're a die hard fan of Aida, buy this record. Otherwise, it could be a hitless miss.

Living Elaborate Lives..........2002-11-02

Aida was Elton John and Tim Rice's baby, providing a concept soundtrack album before even setting the stage on fire, the tracks are generally sweeping show ballads.
Elton teams up with several lovely and talented ladies, in LeAnn Rimes, Janet Jackson, and Lulu. "Written In The Stars" could be a vocal gladiator battle, the way LeAnn and Elton sing it. Janet and Lulu prove themselves as more mellow duet partners.
Kelly Price makes "The Gods Love Nubia" her own, the song is tied up in soul with her voice being smooth as silk. The far too short "Amneris' Letter" shows off Shania Twain's voice to perfection also. Pop culture phenomenon the Spice Girls turn "My Strongest Suit" into the most obvious pop stomper of this set. Another strong point is Heather Headley's solo "Elaborate Lives". A rich ballad, Headley recently embarked on an R&B singing career with the track "He Is". The legendary Tina Turner provides a fiery perfomance, her track being the powerful "Easy As Life" with Angelique Kidjo.
Duds are also present, Sting and Dru Hill's tracks are admitted stinkers. James Taylor, Boyz II Men, Sherie Scott, and Lenny Kravitz also deliver perfomances on the album. This album is well put together, with strong tunes and a short-list of superstars presenting them. A fun buy.

Ty Herndon has been in the industry now for many years and has not received the recognition he deserves. He is an outstanding artist and his new CD 'Right About Now' is a showcase of his pure and raw talent. His voice is very soulful and I found myself with goosebumbs whilst listening to it. This Cd is smooth as silk, with some awesome tracks. I first listened to it while at a friends home. I had to have a copy of my own. It was a pleasant surprise to listen to artist (Montel Jordan) whom I would never associate with smooth jazz. A pleasant treat, indeed.

Should have taken first reviewer's advice.......2007-04-28

Recorded in 1981 and released in 1996, that should tell you something right there. The enclosed pamphlet mentions that even the guard helped with the singing. This CD is not what one would expect from this artist. He mentions the recording being interrupted by a Japanese family that had found another guard to bribe. While some may get value from the Om meditations, the wild birds in the background on every track take much away from the recording quality because this was recorded inside the pyramid. There is little intrinsic value here.

No, I'm more than a little disappointed in this CD and Borders won't take it back.

Don't waste your money.......2007-04-08

Let me preface by saying that I really like most of Halpern's music, however, this CD hit way below my expectations. It is a chanting CD without any musical ambiance, and with one 10 minute track of meditation that is "silent meditation", literally. I could've gotten my friends to chant with me while I recorded in the Great Pyramid, or anywhere acoustic for that matter and then added 10 minutes of silence and ended the CD with another chant. I really feel Halpern missed a grand opportunity to do some amazing stuff while in the Great Pyramid, yet he chose to chant, chant, chant. Why, only he can answer that one. I bought this CD before any 30 second bites were available to listen to, otherwise, I would have never bought this CD.

This Is A Good CD. I Think Its A Bit Better And Refined From His Other CD, One Day Deep. This CD Is Not For A Smooth Jazz Lover, But Rather For Those That Like To Straddle The Fence And Delve Into A Little Bit Of Everything Music Wise. There Are Some Very Good Cuts On This CD. Try The Sample Bar And Give A Listen!

How did he do this?
Here is an intriguing blend of jazz, indian, brazilian, middle east, (etc!), with Praful's incredible sax play. I am discovering this CD over and over again. Praful's first CD is good, no doubt. In my opinion, this one is more creative and engaging. Now that I've said that, I need to listen again to his first CD.
You won't be disappointed. Give it a try. Don't stop until you've heard the last track...the sax is great and I've just replayed it 3 times.

Electronica Meets Smooth Jazz - Praful Makes a Perfect Union!!.......2005-11-22

To some electronica enthusiasts, it might seem like a contraction to describe Praful as a saxophonist who has some relevance to electronica. If electronica is all about synthesizers, drum machines, sequencers, samplers, and the like, how can a saxman possibly have any relevance to electronica? Isn't "saxophone electronica" sort of like kosher pork or vegetarian sausage? But electronica doesn't have to be 100 percent electronic - it can involve a combination of electronic programming and real instruments (and often does). Besides, Praful never claimed to be an electronica purist - actually, it is difficult to say exactly how Pyramid in Your Backyard should be categorized. It's probably best to describe this 2005 release as a hybrid mixture of electronic club/dance grooves (including trip-hop, chillout, and ambient), pop-jazz, and world music. Of course, world music is a very broad, far-reaching term - and on Pyramid in Your Backyard, it means everything from Indian, Arabic, and Middle Eastern music to Brazilian samba. This is a largely instrumental CD, but if Praful (who plays guitar, keyboards, and the Indian bansuri flute in addition to his tenor and soprano sax) is essentially an instrumentalist, he is an instrumentalist who isn't afraid to feature the occasional vocalist when it is appropriate - including himself. Praful does much more playing than singing, but he does sing lead on the moody "Naked." Pyramid in Your Backyard is not a perfect CD; some of the tunes are more successful than others. But the disc has more ups than downs - and the fact that Praful is hard to pigeonhole is a definite plus.

Great Mix of Smooth Jazz, Electronica and World Music.......2005-06-24

It took a couple of listens, but I really enjoy the new Praful
release "Pyramid In Your Backyard". It is a nice mix of Smooth
Jazz and Electronica, along with elements of World Music with
Indian and Brazilian overtones. The vocals are nice, especially
"Eternity" and "Naked". This CD will not be for everyone, but
if you are looking for a nice blend of interesting music, I
would recommend it.
