Puerto Rican superstar Ricky Martin's self-titled first English-language album is a triumph of an omnivorous world-pop sensibility--but more important is that at its best, it's a real kick. The first single, "Livin' la Vida Loca," employs a revved-up ska tempo to praise a girl whose "lips are devil red [and] skin's the color of mocha." Martin is no less irresistible on the disc's other uptempo numbers, such as "Spanish Eyes," "The Cup of Life" (the 1998 World Cup theme which with he stole the Grammy telecast a few months before this CD's release), and the Soul Coughing-indebted "Shake Your Bon Bon." Ricky Martin loses momentum with its draggier ballads--even the much-touted Madonna duet, "Be Careful (Cuidade con Mi Corazon)," doesn't spark--but overall, it deserves its inevitable multiplatinum success. --Rickey Wright

Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski hatched the idea for Rogue's Gallery while filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"--that idea being to cast genteel rock superstars like Bono, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Andre Corr, and Sting to reinterpret gritty seafaring standards for an exhaustive 43-track double-disc set produced by Hal Wilner. Throw in a bunch of credible folk stars (Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Thompson), their offspring (Rufus, Teddy) and a string of other curious characters (Jarvis Cocker, Antony) and what results is one of the strangest compilations in recent memory, if not exactly the most historically authentic or, well, digestible. Nick Cave embraces the role just a little too hard on "Fire Down Below," while Ferry can't help but sound like he's singing for the cast of "The Love Boat," but cut through the chaff and there is some real bootie here: Bono's "Dying Sailor to His Shipmates," Jolie Holland's "The Grey Funnel Line" and "Boney" by a mysterious tramp called Jack Sh**, which must be some kind of anagram for Johnny Depp. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

While working on the two "Pirates Of The Carribean" films, Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski became fascinated with the lore and fable of the pirates and sailors who ran the high seas. Enter legendary producer Hal Wilner, who brings his knack for matching maverick musicians with extraordinary material. Artists on this double disc set include Bono, Sting, Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Lou Reed, Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, and many more. "Rogue's Gallery" offers a look at the hardships, the horrors, the lusts and lurid depths, and the crystal beauty that led men to the sea in ships for hundreds of years.

3 out of 5 stars Fun--but not great.......2007-07-03

What a concept--a pirate song co-produced by Verbinski and Depp inspired by the "Pirates of the Carribean" series. It should be great and in places, it is. The big question I came away with is--who is Jack Sh**? That one definitely has me guessing.

I won't belabor the song content or the production value. I think the most notable reviews have got that down pat, although I'm not marking down as far as they have because I'm giving points for originality being a fan of Spike Jones and some other truly demented people.

One thing to note: this is not a CD you'd buy if you were looking for something to amuse your kids. Some of the content is very bawdy and Mom and Dad would have some serious 'splaining to do to the little pirates. There's both some language and some situations that are more twisted than a Hangman's knot.

3 out of 5 stars aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh!.......2007-06-09

Some of the songs are quite good(mellow)others a little odd. Its what I expected, but not what you would expect.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment would be an understatement.......2007-06-04

It is not unusual to find sea shanties performed by not the greatest musicians or singers in the world. It is not unusual to find shanties sung by people who have difficulty keeping perfect pitch, or tempo. But at least they understand what the music is about, and sing it with heart and enthusiasm and a love for the genre.

Hal Wilner should stick to whatever genre it is that made him know enough to be approached by labels, because he clearly has no understanding, and less enthusiasm for *this* genre.

If you love lively music from the maritime era, you can only be bitterly disappointed by this collection. Out of 43 tracks, I found 15 that were salvageable. Sort of.

I've already tossed this onto the pile to go to the resale shop. It wasn't worthy the cost of shipping.

2 out of 5 stars Zzz..........2007-04-04

I have to admit that I have no idea what kinds of music the pirates sang aboard their ships. I know it probably wasn't "yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me," but I expected something different than this. I think my expectations have been colored by groups like The Pogues, Flogging Molly, The Tossers, and the Real McKenzies. I have an annual Pirate Party and I was hoping to find some good music here to get people in the mood for a treasure hunt or pirate liar's dice, but instead, the music on this CD is something I'd put on if the party went on too long and I wanted to encourage people to leave. Some of it is actually awful and the rest is too slow and plodding to inject much energy into any situation.

I appreciate what was attempted here (contemporary artists paying homage to sea chanteys in the spirit of our romanticized version of the pirate era) but it just doesn't really work. The effect is similar to what would be achieved if the London Philharmonic Orchestra attempted to play rap "music" with Luciano Pavarotti rhymin' while flashing gang signs.

1 out of 5 stars another set of hopes are smashed.......2007-03-29

the selection of titles attracted me. The quality of the arrangements, the voices, and the music---are all quite bad.

It is VERY sad that these same titles, could not have been produced for quality. They sound like a nightmare.

By all indications, Ricky Martin's Unplugged opus should be an easy, effortless sell. The charismatic singer is in fine vocal form, backed by a tight band. He makes some interesting set list selections ("Gracias Por Pensar En Mi," "Asignatura Pendiente"). But Martin is also coming off 2005's commercially disappointing Life, which didn't even reach gold status (sales of 500,000 copies). That's a long way down from his Loca peak. It gives Unplugged, then, the whiff of an artist grasping for old glories. Martin was wise to include standouts "Perdido Sin Ti" and "Vuelve," which still shimmer with a lush pop sheen. Both are from 1998's Vuelve disc, still Martin's strongest effort to date. But new tracks "Con Tu Nombre," "Tu Recuerdo," and "Pegate" come off like unremarkable rehashes of past hits. Instead of looking back, this talented singer should be searching for real ways to reinvent his sound and to make his music exciting again. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Completely ANGELIC.......2007-06-17

If you thought you loved Ricky Martin you have NOT lived until you have heard this album. I love his music and I find it takes me back to Puerto Rico when I listen to him but this album not only takes me back there it TRANSPORTS me to the heart of Viejo San Juan. This album is "el mar que de podentro".

To hear a track like "Maria" knocked down about 25 notches from that crazy energetic totally loveable regular release and hear Ricky enjoying every sylable of the song is a JOY to my ears. I can hear in his voice that he is performing for the love of performing not for the want of fame or fortune. He is there because he wants to sing, hands down he loves what he does and well, he's one of the BEST at what he does! I also fell in love with "Perdido Sin Ti" on the "La Historia" album and it has a personal significance in my life but this live version is nothing short of an Angel sining to my heart.

He is performing on stage with Tommy Torres who has to be one of the quintesential Puerto Rican artists alive today and they are jamming. Anyone who understands what "Jam" means you will WANT to hear this album.

If you were hesitant to buy, hesitate NO more, RUN and buy this album I can guarantee that you will not be disapointed. If you are, well you aren't a true RMMII fan....

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous artistry.......2007-06-06

Ricky reveals incredible depth, sincerity, and artistry in this production. An unplugged should speak to the audience in an intimate manner and Ricky has definitely achieved a unique level of expressiveness that sips through every verse and every commentary from the artist. I am happy and proud to see Ricky shine brighter than ever both as an acclaimed artist, entertainer, and philanthropist.

5 out of 5 stars Fabuloso!.......2007-03-20

I really love this song, and being in love with latin music, i thought this album was amazing. Ricky martin has done it again. Wow!

What an incredible CD from the ultimate performer. If you're a true Ricky fan, you should also purchase the accompanying DVD to this CD. He returns back to what he knows best....ENTERTAINING! I would definately recommend this CD to anyone that loves Latin pop!

GOZALO!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-09

This is a phenomenal cd that I truly enjoy listenig to. The acoustic format lends such a different dimension to his music and proves that good music does not need heavy and zealous production to be brilliant -- it shines on its own merit. He is in fine voice and I believe this cd emphasizes that Ricky is not a flash-in-the-pan product of music industry sharks out to capitalize on his good looks and charisma. With nothing to hide behind, an acoustic venue such as this shows an artist's true talent, for good or bad. Ricky's talent speaks for itself here and proves him to be the true musician and artist he has never received proper credit for.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful - no other word for it.......2007-05-30

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. A must for both casual and die-hard Western fans. Great even if your sense of nostalgia doesn't reach that far back (like me; I'm 22). I love the combination of slow ballads and fast, jumpy songs.

5 out of 5 stars More Momories of Westerns.......2007-03-09

Boy, do these bring back memories of some of the Great Westerns of the 50's. We sit and listen to the songs and think of the movies and the TV shows that they are from. We can remember who starred in the movies and how the "Sons of the Pioneers" entered the stage to sing.
This is a GREAT CD.

5 out of 5 stars Old West Nostalgia.......2006-10-29

For anyone old enough to remember all the great Old West TV shows and movies from the same era, this CD is bound to bring you lots of fond memories and relaxing pleasure. What's best, the artists are all the originals; there are no remakes. Plenty of tunes are on this CD. It's well worth the price and the time.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2006-10-24

The quality of the samples is better than the quality of the recordings.

5 out of 5 stars I Look Toward Home.......2006-10-05

This album takes me back to Texas. "The Sons Of Katie Elder" sung by Johnny Cash and "Nevada Smith" sung by Merle Kilgore sound good but are a bit modern. "The Searchers" sung by the Sons Of The Pioneers really hits home. As the sun sets and the days grow short I ride away and I look toward home.

4 out of 5 stars Latin Pop Explosion!.......2007-02-15

Ricky Martin was not the first nor last Latin artist to release an English speaking album but he was one of the most successful and a pioneer for others. In 1998-1999 it seems like people were going crazy over the Latin inspired pop, it was exotic and finally there were artists promiting their music to a English speaking audience. Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, Marc Anthony and later Shakira were artists that went from Spanish albums into Latin-Pop in English with big success. This music was so popular that even others like Paulina Rubio, Thalia and actress Jennifer Lopez followed, although JLO had never released any album before 1999 and the other two were not very successful. This album include some Latin-pop songs but also a few adult contemporary ballads. It's well calculated and commercial but got catchy music that proved succuseful to a broad audience. The record company people obviously knew that it would sell and we've seen others after this using oriental influnced music to their songs (Producer Scott Storch for example) to generate an exotic yet commercial sound to their music. "Living La Vida Loca" is ofocurse the highlight, a cathcy latin inspired uptempo that also became his trademark. "Maria" his first single from the album that was a big hit all over europe, but it was in Spanish, same thing with the official world cup 1998 song "La Copa De La Vida" or "The Cup of Life" which it's called in English. We also find the stupid "Shake Your Bon Bon" released in the middle of Ricky Martin hysteria and latin midtempo "Spanish Eyes". The producers were also smart enough to include 2 duets, one with Madonna! "Be Careful" and one with Swedish singer Meja called "Private Emotion" which is a ballad, ditto with "She's All I Ever Had". These songs are very calculated to fit into the English speaking crowd, but could just aswell have been recorded for someone else. The rest of the songs are fine, especially Diane Warren penned "I Count the Minutes" which sound incredibly dated by the way, but a good song nonetheless with nice hook, the others fit in smooth into the concept but doesn't stand out. Overall, This is a well crafted album made to sell to a broad audience. It got something for everyone but at the same time it's very constructed and not too personal. However, when you look back, it gives you many great memories and this album was also responsible for Latin music to finally appeal to an english speaking audience. Martin is a great entertainer and this is his finest English album to date.

5 out of 5 stars "Shake Your Bon-Bon Baby!!".......2006-02-02

Wow - this is one of the best Ricky Martin albums to get! I love his song "Shake Your Bon-Bon", and this CD is CALIENTE! From Livin' La Vida Loca, Cup of Life, Maria, Spanish Eyes and more! ps: if you're lookin for more Ricky, check out "Life" with the song "Drop It On Me"...another winning CD!

5 out of 5 stars Good variety of production.......2006-01-01

This is probably Ricky Martin's best album right now. It has at least 4 US releases (Livin' La Vida Loca, Bella (She's All I Ever Had), Shake Your Bon-Bon, The Cup of Life) and as mainstream as it was, it deservedly receives a lot of interested fans. I think I even heard Private Emotion on the radio. The blending of lyrics and the music production on the releases are not overly done. If you're looking for complex or extremely witty lyrics, this is not the album for you then. The lyrics and music accentuate the CD with themes of romantic love and spirits of accomplishment. Shake Your Bon-Bon is way too corny, but besides that track, the other ones are much more presentable and natural for Ricky Martin. Some of the unreleased songs may be too Spanish sounding and too similar sounding for a mainstream audience. They are too similar sounding for me too sometimes. She's All I Ever Had and Private Emotion definitely capture contemporary pop done well, and Private Emotion sounds like a big hit. Probably hit big in non-US countries. Livin' La Vida Loca and the Cup of Life both have a cool flair that's not just put together like some Backstreet Boys songs. Suggested for anyone who likes well done music based entirely on production and vocals.

3 out of 5 stars tolerable during it's time.......2005-11-21

la vida loca was the most annoying song to hit the radio in 1999. Every time I would hear it I would switch the station to something else to drown out the noise. But then one day I saw the video and I finally liked the song, I didn't love it but it was alright. Then my birthday rolled around and a friend gave me his CD and I said thank you with a forced smile cause she didn't realize I'm not a fan of his. So I put this in the CD player and surprisingly there were some really catchy numbers on the CD, though now I cringe at the lame lyrics of shake your bon bon and the cup of life(anybody could have written this song). The standouts to me were be careful featuring the queen of pop madonna, and i count the minutes which had such a nice melody and music(and is a remake of someone's I'm pretty sure). At the time though he was an international world star though now he seems to have gone hip hop just to become famous again but it's not working. Now he's only known for la vida loca and the infamous she bangs thanks to no other than william hung

5 out of 5 stars Great Latin Old School!!!!.......2005-11-19

During the Latin Explosion of 1999 and 2000, many great latin singles were released during that time. Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Enrique Iglesias made the charts. Ricky Martin did to with famous songs such "Livin La Vida Loca", "Shake your Bon-Bon", and "She's All I Ever Had". I remember hearing those songs on the radio as a kid, and now years later I always have flashbacks when I hear these songs. The current Latin Explosion is alright with Reggaeton mainly being the big thing, but there's nothing wrong with hearing a little old school every once in a while. I also like some other Ricky Martin's music after this album release which I don't hear on the radio anymore. Such as "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" with Christian Aguilera, She Bangs, and his new one with Fat Joe. THIS GUY ROCKS!!!!!

The most successful of ex-Menudo members, Ricky Martin delivered a worldwide hit with the club favorite "Maria" (you know, the "un, dos, tres, Maria!" song), and here he follows up with more urgent, catchy pop tunes with emphasis again on danceable rhythms. Solid-impact tunes include the terrific and upbeat "Marcia Baila" and the percussion- and horn-driven opener "Por Arriba, por Abajo," complete with African chants. Occasional soft tunes like the samba-flavored "La Bomba" and the melancholy "Casi un Bolero" only serve as time-outs from the dance fever evoked on tunes like the finger-snapping "Lola, Lola" and the rhythmic title track. Weak is "No Importa la Distancia," a bland cover of Michael Bolton's "Hercules." --Ramiro Burr

This CD came out before the Livin La Vida Loca Craziness of 1999. It was truly his best CD. All the songs whether low key ballads, or crazy up tempo dance tracks all have one thing in common, they are great. There is a song for every mood and Ricky himself has a beautiful voice. I hope that he one day will make another album like this.

The key tracks are: Vuelve, La Bomba, Por Arriba, Por Abajo, La Copa De La Vida, and Marcia Baila.

5 out of 5 stars Vuelve with another one as good as this one!!!.......2006-07-03

Wow I love this album. Its great! well of course is great, it's Ricky. This album as well as "Medio Vivir" met all my expectations!! Thanks for a great one Ricky!

Wow this is a great album! I feel bad that I don't own it, but now I will look out for it, Every single song on this album is great!

5 out of 5 stars el mejor disco de ricky martin.......2003-12-01

4 out of 5 stars Ricky--King of Latin Sound.......2003-08-20

The "Vuelve" cd has a wonderful cross of up-tempo (gotta get up and dance songs) with romantic ballads. My favorites are "Bomba", a perfect party song for anyone to enjoy. Also "Por Arriba, Por Abajo" which is a song that just keeps building with an amazing accompaniment of horns that drives you right through the song with your shoulders shaking to the beat. "Lola, Lola" is still a great dance song, but has a slower pace that's almost hypnotic. "Casi Un Bolero" is just a beautiful song that haunts you--EVEN if you don't know what the words mean! And then of course "Copa de la Vida", which you may remember from the World Cup (Soccer) a few year back. This is a perfect "get the party started" song! All in all, this is an excellent cd that you will enjoy whether you speak Spanish or not. I know I'm very happy to own it!

Ricky Martin's self-titled 1999 album made him an international crossover star, and it's been both a blessing and a curse ever since. The Puerto Rican heartthrob became the poster boy for the much-ballyhoed Latin-pop movement, and he paved the way for English-language albums from Paulina Rubio, Thalia and Shakira. At the same time, Martin's processed pop recordings quickly lost favor at radio, and he seemed destined to become a musical footnote. Life finds the charismatic singer exuding a newfound confidence and showcasing some much-needed musical diversity. Martin traveled to India to record the string arrangements for the album, and that influence is felt throughout the disc's 12 tracks. Middle Eastern accents embellish tracks "Til I Get To You" and "I Won't Desert You," and groovy first single "I Don't Care" adds guest vocals from Fat Joe and soulful songbird Amerie for some street cred. Vocally, Martin sounds better than ever; he pushes his modest voice past its normal limit to match the intensity of the music. And like any good pop icon looking to maximize airplay, Martin dabbles in reggaeton during "Drop it On Me" and the Luny Tunes Mix of "Que Mas Da (I Don't Care)." Life may be the sound of an artist still looking for his individual sound, but it's a pretty enjoyable ride nonetheless. --Joey Guerra

I own many of Ricky Martin's CD and I was a little disappointed in this one. Its not as up beat as what I expected.

5 out of 5 stars Smooookin.......2007-04-15

This CD is even Hotter than La Vida Loca. Ricky goes from Hottie to Lusty in this version. If hot is what you want then this is the Ricky CD you want. Saw him in Concert when the CD came out and ALL I can say is that he is so much more handsom in person than even his CD. UNBELIEVABLE! If you ever get a chance see him in concert. The music, the moves, the man! Take a bib.

3 out of 5 stars Did ANYone buy this?.......2006-11-18

I wasn't sure when the next time was going to be that we would hear from Ricky Martin. While his last English album, Sound Loaded, didn't see all that well, it still produced some good singles in "She Bangs" and "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely". After that he recorded a few Spanish albums, but he finally came back for another English album in the form of Life.

This is another one of those situations where I read the other reviews and now I'm questioning whether we all listened to the same album. I also understand why this album was repeatedly pushed back, after listening to "I Don't Care" (which WAS a hit single -- for about a week). I won't touch the easy joke in that song's title; instead, I'll say that I think the only reason that song was a hit is because of the Scott Storch beat. Amerie adds nothing to the song, and Fat Joe makes things confusing: Ricky is talking about wanting to stay with the girl even though she cheated on him, while Joey Crack wants to kick the girl out for cheating. Which one is it?

Weak attempts to attract the hip-hop crowd don't stop there, as shown by the will.i.am-produced "Drop It On Me". The song features Daddy Yankee and Taboo, and just like on BEP albums, you can't even tell Taboo is there. "Till I Get to You" has some overdone symphonic production, and the necessary Diane Warren song "Stop Time Tonight" is just okay; a better slow song is "Save the Dance".

There are also a few songs with contradictory titles: "This Is Good" and "It's Alright". The album also concludes with obligatory Spanish versions of earlier tracks ("I Don't Care" and "It's Alright"). Basically, I really had no idea what to rate this album after listening to it; even three stars is probably being nice. People say one should get a life, but this ain't the kind of life to get.

1 out of 5 stars this bloke is overrated.......2006-09-09

he was cool in 1999, even his second english album had some decent tracks but that was his creative peak. One would think that after travelling around the world including places like india, ricky would have drawn a lot of inspiration for his music. He tried but he failed. This music just isn't good. I gave this album a second chance recently and it still sounds horrible! He can't decide whether he wants to be hip hop or bollywood or what. He should just stick to what he does best with his latin-fused pop/rock sound instead of trying too hard to appear as a serious, credible artist.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Album.......2006-07-03

I love Ricky and I think he is great at what he does. However, this album did not meet my expectations at all. I only like 1 or 2 songs. I think Ricky could have done way better. If i could return my cd and get my money back I would. There go 15 bucks I'll never see again.

Sound Loaded, Ricky Martin's follow-up to his self-titled 1999 triumph, is a marvel as much of cross-country technological wizardry as of a multicultural pop sensibility. "She Bangs," its first single, was made in seven locations from Miami to Hollywood; all the work results in a gratifying everything-and-the-kitchen-sink uptempo extravaganza. (The details include a sampled nod to Fishbone, an apparent influence on 1999's "Livin' la Vida Loca," and the delightful malapropism "She looks like a flower but she stings like a bee.") If the rest of the disc never quite matches that high, neither does its quality sink much; if anything, Sound Loaded may be a bigger cut-for-cut success than its predecessor. The winners are mostly similar dancefloor rockers, but the ballads generally skirt the edge of treacle. Spanish versions of "She Bangs," "Come to Me," and "Loaded" are additions to the dozen cuts in English. --Rickey Wright

3 out of 5 stars Sound Re-Done.......2007-02-15

Ricky Martin's eponymous debut album had sold really good in 1999 and there was alot of hype around him at the time. The best way to follow up to the great success was to release a follow up as soon as possible, and that's what the record company did. Already one year later in 2000 came the sophmore effort called "Sound Loaded" which is an perfect name cause that is basically what it is. More of the same that worked one year ago. Martin was still popular in 2000, mind you. However it sounds like alot of the songs were released in a very fast pace in order to content the audience that wasnted more of his Latin-Pop. "Sha Bangs" the big hit was just as corny as "Shake Your Bon Bon" and sounds quite simular aswell. "Loaded" also follow that trend, a latin-pop sound made for an english audience but neither good lyrics or that creative punch that it desperately would have needed. The best song of this album is a ballad in my oppionion. "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" between Ricky and Christina Aguilera. Also a hit single. Those three were the only singles released, which may be strange considering there were countless of sinle releases from his debut album. The truth is that there aren't that many potential single hits on this album. Maybe "Come to Me" a decent midtempo but other then that there are few memorable songs here. Diane Warren also wrote a song for this album "The Truth" a powerballad which is ok. Then we have countless of Latin-Pop songs that are quite forgettable actually. In retrospect it feels obvious that this project was rushed and could have been better, but it doesn't take a genius to realize that the record company wanted to milk out as much money in his music as possible. "Sound Reloaded" is alright, but it doesn't offer much more then the three hit singles. If you like Ricky, check his debut album or his 2005 album "Life" instead.

Ricky's sophomore English album (sixth solo album overall) picks up where "Ricky Martin 1999" left off. The thick, slick production with aggressive beats work well with Ricky's voice. Songs like "Amor", "Saint Tropez", "Cambia La Piel" and "Jezabel" are where things gel together the best and he sounds assured. There are a few dull spots such as "If You Ever Saw Her" and the original version of "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely." It's a mystery why the massive hit duet version with Christina Aguliera wasn't included. It should have been included. Luckily, he projects enough charisma to make those moments listenable. Aside from that, there are enough good moments to please most Pop fans. The other two ballads "Come To Me" & "The Touch" revel Ricky's more sensitive side and are quite pleasant. This album is well suited to fans of Dance-Pop, Latin-Pop and Club/Dance. This album would not appeal to you if you don't like those styles.

2 out of 5 stars Bummer---Barely Average.......2005-10-14

Well, I gave this CD its first spin after a two year absence of ANY Ricky Martin music in my life. After his 1999 self-title CD, I pretty much went head over heals for Ricky. When this CD came out in November of 2000 I was really excited. Upon first listening to it, I thought it was better than his 99 CD but no where near as good as Vuelve. It would take 2003's Almas Del Silencio to really wash way the bad taste in my mouth that this CD leaves.

As several folks know, Ricky was under pressure from his managers, producers and the record company to deliver a follow up to his 1999 CD. Sound Loaded is what we got. This album was obviously rushed and it sounds like it. Weak lyrics and over saturation of musical gimicks is utilzed to keep the 'Livin La Vida Loca' fever burning. Ricky's voice just sounds tired and worn out. It's easy to tell that he was way over due for a vacation.

There are a few standout tracks on the disc. 'Amor' by far out shines every song by a mile. Had Sound Loaded had more great tunes like 'Amor' on it, the CD would have been a hit. As it is, the CD is mediocre at best.

Being a pop icon is nothing new to the Grammy-winning, Puerto Rican singer/actor Ricky Martin. He was a child star with the '80s kid group Menudo. And he was a regular on the soap opera General Hospital. But he hit the big time in 1999 with his smash Anglo hit Livin' la Vida Loca. On his new CD, Martin returns to his Hispanic roots with this zesty Spanish language release, which translates as Souls of Silence. Backed by poetic and pulsating string/synth/horn production from Tommy Torres, George Noriega, Emilo Estefan and Stefano, this effort comes with all of Martin's grand moods and grooves. The fiery, flamenco-flavored "Jaleo" is rendered in Latin pop and hip-hop, Spanglish versions. Both takes, along with the equally danceable numbers like "Besos de Fuego," are designed to move your bon bon. But Martin's bolero ballads "Tal Vez," the title track, penned by the other Latin star Alejandro Sanz, and Ricardo Arjona's "Assignatura Pendiente" show that Martin can sing for the heart and the hips. With this effort, Ricky Martin moves into Celine Dion territory and may be able to keep his loyal Latino dance/ pop fans while making new ones in the adult contemporary market. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars I had almost lost hope till I heard this CD!.......2005-10-18

I've been a Ricky Martin fan for over a decade now but after "Living La Vida Loca" (and the few years after)I started to question my sanity for still hoping better times would come. So for the past few years I've just bearly kept tabs on what his new projects were, etc. wondering whatever happened to the Ricky I "knew" before he decided to crossover into the English Market. And then I heard about "Almas del Silencio". It took me many months before I risked buying the CD. And boy! Did I wish I had bought it earlier! It was amazing hearing him sing in his native language again! Like someone mentioned before, he does a MUCH better job in conveying emotions in Spanish. He really gets back to his roots in "Almas del Silencio". Even though I realize this CD is more an apologetic than anything else (If you were in Puerto Rico when his English CD came out you'll understand what I'm talking about!) I couldn't help but love it. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente álbum. Excellent album!.......2005-10-18

Altamente recomendado.

For non-Spanish speaking persons, you should enjoy this production. If Hispanics that didn't understand much English were able to enjoy The Beatles and many great artists, the same could happen with Americans enjoying music in Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars Almas del Silencio Brings to Life "LIFE"!.......2005-10-03

well, well it is hard for me to find words to describe what i feel for this singer especially for his music!!!, this album is great, i know is a bit late to write about this album when the next one which is "life" is about to come out but though, i would say that all the songs on the album are in my langauge spanish!,all the songs were perfectly done in all aspects eh!, there is nothin' bad i can find!, just another great production of the best singer ever, the singer who has the neatest appearance, the most attractive, it is not that i am in love with ricky martin, the thing is that i gotta say what is obvious is to be said, to be admired. thus, i am his biggest fan in peru i guess!, ricky if u happen to read this, write to me as soon as possible please1, i consider u the best person in the world, u are kinda the older brother i never had, i am calling every single day all the cd stores here in lima to find out if they have your newest cd "life" to fly there and get it!, maybe i can find it before the official date!, ricky i love as i have already explained before (to avoid bein' misunderstood) bye ricky martin!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!!!.......2005-08-11

I don't understand much Spanish, but Martin's voice is absolutely wonderful here! The ballads are VERY romantic and the "pop" style songs are very upbeat without being clubby.
I've listened to more than a few Latin artists (Sin Bandera included), and a lot of them are good at 1 or 2 styles of songs, but there's something about how Martin comes across on both ballads and the "pop" style songs. You can hear the feeling in his voice! I seriously can't say there's a bad song here!
Interestingly enough, when I heard the Spanish/English version of Jaleo it really sounds awkward. The words don't seem to mesh as well as when he sings it all in Spanish.
I have Martin's english albums and I like some of the songs on them, but he seems to put more feeling into his Spanish songs, and it comes across.
I've ordered the rest of his Spanish albums, and can only guess how good they'll be! Ok, now I've got to learn more Spanish!

I just recently started listening to this song, and I was pleasantly surprised how well Christina's and Ricky's voices blend together. The hook is very catchy, and the song is both romantic and powerful. I am surprised that it didn't get more airplay. This made me like both of them, as vocalists, which I couldn't say before.......

A Medio Vivir is Ricky Martin's stylistic leap from the swoony crooning of Me Amaras toward Top 40 stardom. While still an essentially romantic recording, this collection dips into rock, gospel, and Latin soul, forming the foundation of the artist's meteoric rise on the charts. Beginning with the sound of ocean waves, A Media Vivir gets going strong with the wailing sax, chorded piano, and gospel-choir backing on the superlative title cut through to the electrified rock of "Bombom de Azucar." Martin's vocals by this point have become more expressive, bombastic, and, handily, manly--the mother of all romance languages catching in his throat in a strangely appealing fashion. Adventurous in its genre hopping, Vivir is uneven, but a welcome departure and expansion from his days of Menudo and languid Latin love songs and a harbinger of what's to come. And if Martin busting a move in the midst of a ring of fire on national television is the listener's speed, then A Media Vivir in all its ragged enthusiasm is just the thing. --Paige La Grone

This album has great ballads but the fast songs sound cheesy and dated at times.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Ricky Martin, with hint of future greatness.......2004-11-10

Ricky's best album is (arguably) still his 1999 (US) "Ricky Martin" with its hit "Livin La Vida Loca", but this one is still my favorite. Ricy's rich voice soars on tracks such as Te Extraño, Te Olvido, Te Amo and leaves us wanting more with every note. A fine actor as well as a singer, Ricky sang this song on "General Hospital" and had me gasping. Gloria Estefan helped bring Latino pop into the mainstream, but I believe that it's Ricky who will take it to its highest success. Highly recommend this album for any Latin music fan, Ricky Martin fan, or anyone who wants to listen to true romance. Also check out his 1991 "Ricky Martin" album

5 out of 5 stars great!.......2003-12-01

5 out of 5 stars Ricky Martain.......2003-08-07

I bought A Medio Vivir on August 6 2003 because I heard about 2 months ago Fuego De Noche' Nieve De Dia and I instintely feel in love with that song. I also saw the video because I have spaniah videos on my tv box. Thats how I heard the song. The whole cd is super fanstic cd!!!!!. I had heard five songs befor I bought the cd. One is Maria which I did not know he had an original version of that song. I thought there was only one version. The other song is Bombom De Azucar which I have by Charlie Cruz. Another is of course the very very betiful song I metioned befor Fuego De Noche' Nieve De Dia. Another is A Medio Vivir and last but lest is Te Extrano. Te Olvido' Te Amo. The other song are very nice too. I love the cd even though I do not speak a lot of spanish but I understand it alot. Ricky Mattain's A Medio Vivir gets 5 stars. Wonderful cd!!!!! Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars vintage ricky.......2001-06-02

This is the first album I bought by the former "General Hospital" hunk, and it is by far the best. He may have won a grammy for Veulve but that album can't touch this one. He has the range which allows him to go from a ballad to a dance beat seamlessly. It is one of the few albums that I listen to from beginning to end and that is saying a lot since I do not speak a word of Spanish. I would reccomend this CD to anyone who is a Ricky Martin fan or is just looking to expand their music collection to include latin
