The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Their powerful voices are marvelous separate or together, as they share equal time singing their solo hits, and join up for 4 duets, from "Amor de los Dos", which was Alejandro's first recording when he was 19, and started him out on a singing career, to the spectacular "Perdon", with a soaring interpretation of this gorgeous melody by these perfectly blended voices. Other memorable highlights are "Cuando Yo Queria Ser Grande", sung movingly by Alejandro to his father, and a long, slightly modernized version of the exquisite "Como Quien Pierde una Estrella", which was a big hit for Alejandro in 1995. Vicente has many shining moments, like "Me Voy a Quitar de en Medio", and he really knows how to work the crowd, who respond to him with wild appreciation.
I personally don't care for the overall sound quality, which suffers sometimes from the same complaint I had seeing them live at the Universal Amphitheater, where the over-amplification was deafening, and caused a lack of clarity; nevertheless, one must make allowances for live recordings, and for fans of Vicente and Alejandro, this set is a must, to join with the audience with a big cheer. The foldout insert has little more than a song list, and total time for disc # 1 is 46'27, and disc # 2, 63'46.

Essential Performances from a Great & Beloved Singer.......2004-01-09
This wonderful compilation is complementary to EMI's 2-CD "The Very Best of Janet Baker" -- no overlap of repertoire whatsoever. Unlike that set, which focused on concert repertoire (with orchestra or piano) there's a generous sampling here of Baker's operatic roles including Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Rameau, Gluck, and Britten. Also welcome is "Phaedra," one of Britten's strongest late works. And it's good to have the Berlioz: "Cleopatre" and "Herminie" complete, the big aria from "Beatrice et Benedict." (Why EMI included nothing from her recording of the last 2 scenes of "Les Troyens" is unfathomable.) The wide time-span allows us to hear Baker's voice in all its youthful, "sappy" warmth, as well as in its artistic maturity (though truth to tell she was pretty much a complete artist from the start). There are a few signs of wear in later items, nothing serious, in fact rather less than I remembered. I could have done with fewer of the "Arie Amorose" in favor of more cuts from her Gluck LP, which I believe has never been issued complete on CD, but that's just personal preference. The focus here is entirely on orchestrally accompanied works (or, in the case of the marvelous early disc of Ravel, Chausson & Delage songs, with chamber ensemble) so for Baker the supreme interpreter of English, German and French song you'll need to go elsewhere (the EMI has a fair sampling, especially of her Schubert). But everything here is indispensible.

- English: Silvio and Pablo Milanes, are the 2 most importants singers for the Nueva Trova Cubana movement. On this disk, the quality of the sound is very good for a recording like this, and the additional argentinien singers perform very well also. Although those two singers may have about 30 discs each one, the selection here is still interesting, with some of the most popular songs from both. If you like either Silvio, Pablo, or both, and want all the discs in your collection, then buy this one. If you don't have this one, you won't miss too much this record. It has pretty much the same musical structure arrengments than the original songs, with 2 exceptions, Ojala y Oleo de Mujer con sombrero.
Spanish: Este disco tiene una seleccion de canciones acertada, diria yo, tomando el larguisimo numero de canciones que tienen Silvio y Pablo. Musicalmente, creo que no aporta mayor cosa, pero si tienes que tener todas las versiones de todas las canciones, pues compralo, no te arrepentiras, aunque no estara en tu lista de favoritos, creo yo, porque no tiene mayor valor agregado. Los cantantes invitados argentinos cantan una cancion cada uno, con resultados variados.
