There's a palpable sense of joy in Marc Anthony's voice. The salsa star and pop sensation may be slight in stature, but when he opens his mouth to sing, the sheer power and passion of his tenor grabs a hold of your heart and makes you sit up and pay attention. The king of contemporary salsa was born and raised in New York City, but as good as Anthony is in his native tongue, he is triumphant when he sings in Spanish. Like Youssou N'Dour, Celia Cruz, and other great voices, Anthony's intensity and purpose transcend language barriers: even if you don't understand his words, it's difficult not to feel what he is expressing. On his first salsa collection since 1997's potent Contra la Corriente (and his first CD since his 1999 self-titled, slightly watered-down pop smash) Marc Anthony allows the emotionality of the rhythm to take control. Backed by a topnotch band, Anthony's supple voice carries the beat along, and on tracks like the propulsive "De Que Depende" he soars. His joy and the joy of hearing a great singer are contagious. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars A Real Religious Beck!.......2007-07-09

Thank God for this Soundtrack!

It has been our entertainment on many a road trip. And a savior on dull days in the kitchen.

Danny Elfman, Beck, Jack Black, wrestling, and Mexico are good together. Don't ever let anyone EVER tell you different.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack to Accompany Fun Movie.......2007-05-14

If you're looking for a fun soundtrack to remind you of the hilarious movie, this is the soundtrack to get! Although the music is out of order from the movie, the tunes still make you laugh, especially since some of the movie lines are inserted in the tracks. I highly recommend this soundtrack if you enjoyed the movie. Worth the $$.

If I had to use only one word to describe this soundtrack, it would be Awesome! I like the fact that the producer incorporated a few memorable lines from the film. In addition to having the music from the movie, it includes the "songs" Ignacio sings within the film. If you liked this movie as well as Lucha Libre served up silly, then this a soundtrack you must have when wearing your stretchy pants in your room.

5 out of 5 stars Great upbeat latin music.......2007-01-20

I liked the variety of songs that Marc Anthony put on this CD. I enjoy listening to it, especially when driving. It gets me in a better and upbeat mood.

5 out of 5 stars Perfeccion!.......2006-05-01

This album is one of the finest I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. He is so clear and strong and he carries so much emotion and meaning in his voice that you don't need to understand the words to understand what the songs are about. It's a must have for anyone who enjoys salsa and for anyone who can appreciate powerful music. It's perfect!

5 out of 5 stars The best salsa.......2005-02-26

While in the past Marc Anthony has stuck with the safety of more conventional salsa sounds, Libre adds spice and variety while preserving the cultural significance of his music. Celos, Caminaré, and especially Hasta Que Vuelvas Conmigo make you go absolutely insane every time you listen; there's so much energy in the music. If you even remotely like salsa, Latin, or Marc Anthony, this is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Marc, you have never sounded sweeter!.......2004-06-10

Marc is definitely the salsa king of today. He is a beautiful, prolific singer and really captures the passion of the lyrics and mood of his songs.
Here are my critiques:
1. Celos--This song is so hot! What a great way to kick off the album. The salsa really keeps you moving, and Marc sounds like an angel. (5/5)
2. Este Loco Que Te Mira--Another great salsa tune. The arrangement on this song is gorgeous. (5/5)
3. Viviendo--Marc's voice sparkles with life and expression. (5/5)
4. Hasta Que Vuelvas Conmigo--If you haven't started dancing already, now would be the time! (5/5)
5. Barco A La Deriva--I love how this song starts off. There is a real indigenous sound--the panpipes make me think of Quechua music I studied in my ethnomusicology class. There is a great transition between the slow mood of this piece into the faster, more upbeat salsa rhythm that envelopes the second half of the song. (5/5)
6. De Que Depende--Back to salsa. Hot and full of life. (5/5)
7. Yo Te Quiero--I love you, too, Marc! (5/5)
8. Amor Aventurero--Marc is on fire with this piece. I just hope his passion doesn't boil over. (5/5)
9. Caminare--This beautiful ballad is filled with flavor. Even when Marc is a little more restrained and introspective, he still conveys the tenderness of his songs. That is definitely the case, here. (5/5)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastico disco de Marc Anthony.......2004-05-14

Viva Puerto Rico

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic.......2007-04-03

Terrific CD - it took me back to my childhood and the music my parents loved; the song "Ausencia", sung by Willie and his wife, herself the daughter of the singing duo Olga Y Tony, caught me by surprise by making me cry; it was one of my mother's favorites. It's a priceless reminder of an era now gone but not forgotten. Willy never forgets his Cuban roots, and as his contemporary in age, I can relate to his memories, and his music.

5 out of 5 stars overall very good, but missing an important song..........2005-11-13

I enjoy listening to this cd, but i am surprised that willy
Chirino left out the song LAMENTO CUBANO,a song from the MachAdo
period of the 1930's and which I find so perfect to describe
the Cuba of today.
To my pleasant suprise this song was included in the filmç
DIRTY DANCING HAVANA NIGHTS, where it was sung by DONATO,
Yet, I can find no explanation why it was left out of the
soundtrack of the film. Next time you warch the movie, you will
hear this song in the street scene when the american girl meets
the Cuban guy.
Willy, next time you record a CD, please include the song LAMENTO CUBANO, if possible in a duo with DONATO. It's a pity
we can not get a copy of this song as it was performed in the film.
Thank you, willy CHirinos, for this Cd.

5 out of 5 stars great place to start with Cuban music.......2003-12-13

This is clearly Willy Chirino's best. His next best does not even come close. He is a little controversial and is completely banned in Cuba as a Florida right-winger. But I talked to Cubans in Cuba and those particular folk, who are knowledgeable, love this CD and know about the songs on it, although they don't really own CDs much and CD playing boomboxes are a luxury. As for me, I'm not a Cuban--as if that matters--but in things Cuban, sometimes such a disclaimer is demanded. This CD was an early acquisition that put me on the right track. This is not the best Cuban music there is, but its very, very good and accessible for non-Cubans and very rewarding, and well done. The overall production is magnificent. Its the best Cuban music that I know of made outside of Cuba in a generation. And I know a little bit about this subject.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Chirino - a CLASSIC.......2002-06-10

As a Cuban born American, listening to this album has become a deeply enriching, fulfilling experience, offering me the unique opportunity to dig into my roots and share a common bond with my parents' generation, during which time most of these songs became popular. Willy Chirino embellishes each track with utter humanity and syncopating rythmns that will have you dancing in the den! Included are such Cuban classics as "el Manisero" (the "Peanut Vendor") and "Son de la Loma" ("They Come from the Hills") two lovely paeans to the guajiro/farmer lifestyle that percolates through most of our Cuban sounds. Better than Gloria, more accessible than Celia, and richer in scope and sound than Albita, Secada and many others, Willy Chirino puts his trademark energy and vocal prowess to superb use here. A startling, refreshing album that serves as an extension of the Cuban culture.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Latin Starter CD . . . and more........2001-04-13

This eclectic collection of Cuban songs would be my recommendation for anyone who's new to the genre. But I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to Latinophiles either.

I've played this CD so many times that if it were a record, I'd be hearing both sides at once. There's a fine variety of ballads, dance music and traditional tunes that hit the mark the first time you hear them, but continue to satisfy after repeated hearings.

"Son de La Loma" is an almost transcendental experience. I never cared much for "El Manisero" until I heard Chirino's superb rendition. The title song starts the CD off with a bang, and the last two cuts end it on a terrific upbeat note.

The guest singers, arrangements and sound quality are all excellent.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my most-played CDs.......2005-10-13

This is one of my most frequently played CDs. I find it perfect background music for meditation, prayer, reading and other tasks, as well as a good CD that doesn't disturb people at work.

This is not intended to be organised as a church service or a concert performance per se, but rather, as the co-producer Carol Rosenberger states, 'this album is meant to recreate an experience many of us have treasured: slipping inside the doors of a cathedral and finding oneself alone in a vast, quiet space with light streaming through stained glass windows. The organist begins to play gentle music, and one is lost in contemplation...'

As a churchy person, I've often had the experience of working or sitting in an empty church while the organists or their students practiced. This recording in many ways reminds me of that experience. Of course, our organ is a far cry from the pipe organ in Atlanta's Cathedral of St. Philip, with over 5000 pipes (and our church does not have a 5-second delay reverberation, either), 4 manuals and 96 ranks. This Aeolian-Skinner organ is a genuinely stunning instrument, but as with any instrument, it takes the right performer to bring out the fullness of the sound from it.

Todd Wilson is just such a performer. His playing is solid and well-suited for this task, with occasional flashes of brilliance. Mozart's 'Adagio', Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Many's Desiring', and Barber's 'Adadio for Strings' (here arranged for the organ) are truly wonderful pieces. The programme here is a diverse collection of pieces from Baroque, Renaissance, and later pieces, including folk tunes and a few modern compositions. Todd Wilson is a church organist and music director at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland, Ohio (a city with not insignificant music resources and life), and is also head of the Organ Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has had an international performance and recording career.

I applaud the decision to make this a double-disc set - the producer writes that there was just too much good music to limit the selection. Thus, there is a method to the organisation, given the availability of two discs. The first disc has more simple pieces, easily recognisable melodies and well-known hymn/sacred pieces. The second disc has a bit more complexity of music.

There is a booklet that is particularly designed for young people, so that they may become more familiar with the organ as an instrument, and this type of music.

This is a truly wonderful recording.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sets of organ works.......2005-02-20

This is a superb set of organ works. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Mystic!.......2003-12-28

The Æolian-Skinner organ in St.Philip's Cathedral, Atlanta is the finest example on Earth of eclectic organ...and the last- really-marvellous instrument erected by this firm. Flutes and Erzählers speak directly from Heaven...and the organ, despite electric, seems to have tracker action! Listen to Bach's BWV 731 and 648: they sound like played on a Silbermann instrument!
Todd Wilson is a delicate musician, a poet of the organ and a genius in the choice of the stops.
Buy also the other recordings of this Æolian-Skinner by Robert Delcamp (Naxos) and Alan Morrison (Gothic)...and don't forget that Michael Murray recorded in St.Philip's Cathedral for Telarc the finest rendition of Poulenc's "Concerto in sol minore per organo, archi e timpani" under the direction of the late Robert Shaw.

5 out of 5 stars By All Means Get This CD.......2003-09-06

I found this wonderfully relaxing CD above and beyond my expectations. Do you enjoy organ music, then listen and explore the sacred music of J.S. Bach. This music will relax you: keep your muscles relaxed as you work on a time deadline for a large project, or doing some casual items around the house.

5 out of 5 stars To be fair..........2003-04-04

The hiss that one reviewer refers to is undoubtedly the organ's wind supply. The wind can be heard on most organ recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Vibrant sound and Performance, some questionable interpretetations.......2006-05-29

This particular michael murray recording makes up for the lack of recordings of the magnificent organ in St. John Divine. It is perhaps one of the greatest and largest American organs, notably the very powerful state trumpet stop located underneath one of the rose windows (This is one of the few stops of its kind in existence). The Agincourt Hynm really shows off what this stop is capable of. There is some good variety in this recording, although sometimes I felt that the State Trumpet was used in excess (it became annoying at points, simply because it was so powerful and overused). The biggest downfall of this recording is the interpretation of the Widor Symphony VI Finale. I felt the tempo was extremely too slow, and due to this, was lacking the excitment of this wonderful piece (For a more exciting, no holds-barred recording of the Widor 6th, check out David M. Patrick's recording). Overall, this recording is very powerful and really shows off what this famous, yet, not so very often recorded organ can do.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best ever.......1999-11-08

This disc has on it one of America's foremost organists playing one of the largest organs ever constructed. The result is a mix of good music well played with some rather irritating bits. Firstly, the Dunstable and the Purcell (actually by Jeremiah Clarke) make use of the incredible State Trumpet stop; whilst this makes for an excellent first track, in which it appears briefly at the start and end in a sort of fanfare motif, the use of this stop in the Trumpet Tune becomes ear-splitting and tiresome. Murray also has an apparent predilection for slower speeds (though in the main there is nothing wrong with that). Perhaps the most annoying thing is the second Vierne track (the Prelude in D major)- the sleeve notes make a clear point that "any music can be played on this organ", but whether as a result of the recording equipment or the gigantic acoustic or the instrument, it is as if this track was recorded through thick cotton wool from a distant room in the Cathedral. However, even with all these points, this is an interesting programme rendered with genuine sensitivity on a challenging instrument. Worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......1999-06-27

I bought this CD several years ago, and I never get tired of listening to it. Michael Murray gives his usual brilliant rendition of some of the world's greatest organ music in a setting with vibrant accoustics as St. John the Divine is one of the largest churches in the US. This should be required listening for any organ enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars so happy she's back.......2005-10-09

Mercedes has been sick for a couplle of years but if that's taken a toll on her voice somehow, her art goes deeper and deeper. I strongly recommend this album to her fans, and to those who want to know what Argentine folklore is all about. Though her sound is somewhat fragile on certain songs, the delivery remains unparallelled, and she's always in tune. In Zamba de Argamonte, she handles her head tones admirably and ends up the song on a far-fetched, perfectly-tuned note. Remarkable!

5 out of 5 stars A New Pearl from Mercedes.......2005-10-09

If you are already familiar with Mercedes Sosa, you are probably elated that she has released a new album. Having turned seventy years old and of fragile health in recent years, her recordings have been spare -with live recordings filling wider gaps between those with new songs- which makes this release even a stronger reason to rejoice.
As far as this album is concerned, the wait has been amply justified. Mercedes has chosen an intimate ensemble for these offerings, the accompaniment consists of musicians with whom she's played for many years, and the few instruments and austere -yet heartfelt- arrangements in each song focused on her exquisite voice and the mastery of her interpretations.
To select songs for singular praise is quite difficult since every one of these tracks is magnificent, whether they are songs she's not sung before or those who she's chosen to sing again with new arrangements. That said, there are several which deserve attention and promise special delight.
Among the new songs, "Corazón Libre" which is bound for addition to her long list of classics, "País," "Tonada del Otoño," "Tonada del Viejo Amor" - a duet with the legendary Eduardo Falú- and "Y la Milonga lo Sabe" are stunning in their depth and simplicity.
When it comes to new versions, "Todo Cambia," a song that has reached hymn-like status in Argentina since she first sung it, shines brightly. Furthermore, her choice of recording it in a slower and quieter form, brings to the fore new dimensions and nuances -at least it's true in my case- that you may not have fully appreciated before.
All in all, Mercedes Sosa has made another pearl of an album, and if her voice may not always have the chant-like power of earlier recordings, it has not lost any of the heart and wisdom she's known for infusing her songs with. Whenever I listen to this album I'm reminded of the poet Stanley Kunnitz when he says "I am not done with my changes" because Mercedes is clearly not done with hers. May God bless her.

5 out of 5 stars Pure perfection.......2005-09-15

Mercedes Sosa is back after many years of not performing. She's 70, and what a voice she still has!! The songs are wonderful, inspiring, acoustic and melancholic.. she the voice of Argentina.. so go and buy it!!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Louis Vierne 24 Pièces en style libre.......2007-01-04

Vierne was a great composer. A little hard here to imagine theses pieces as liturgical ones. At first hearing, they look more like religious inspiration on liturgical themes.

Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was devoted to the complexity of the organ despite that he was blind most of his life. After a life full of personal tragedies, he died in concert at his beloved organ of Notre-Dame. Vierne is said to be one of the most accessible organ composer and because of it, he is largely played, just as Widor, Franck and of course, Bach.

These Cds are a sort of tribute to Vierne earlier organ works with a compilation of short pieces including the two masses, Opus 30 and 62.

The Funeral March in G sharp minor, with its grave rhythm to the pedal board may have been more expressive with the cadence deliberately set to mark the steps of the funeral convoy.

Beside that, the execution by Ben van Oosten is quite convincing for those who prefer a spiritual approach to organ music. Nothing flashy, but instead, a sober and meditative style of interpretation. A sort of voyage in the traditional sense of ritual. Many good moments too in the Improvisations.

Sounding, organist and recording go without saying : three CDs to listen to, on and on.

4 out of 5 stars A tempting treasury, but only a few performances are great.......2007-02-03

Ten discs of Berlioz is a sumptuous offering, and temptingly cheap at Amazon Marketplace. DG has used this occasion to repackage some outstanding performances. At the top of the list goes James Levine's electrifying Requiem from Berlin, with playing and singing to match the conductor's inspiration. Also exciting--perhaps surprisingly so--is Abbado's Te Deum, which has rawer edges and sharper focus than Colin Davis's on Philips, long the standard version.

Dropping down a notch in quality, we have an elegantly played Romeo et Juliette by the Boston Symphony, superbly recorded, that has few rivals for refined virtuosity. But after a while Seiji Ozawa's approach seems to lack depth and meaning; he's skating over the surface of the musical drama, however brilliantly. Sharp and brilliant also describes Myung-Whun Chung's contribution, a Symponie fantastique, two overtures, and the Royal Hunt and Storm from Les Troyens, all with his well-trained Bastille Opera orchestra. Chung is to the manner born in Berlioz, but so are greater conductors in these works, including Munch and Markevitch.

At about the same quality level I'd place the Mort de Cleopatre, a dullish early vocal scene sung with plushness by Jessye Norman, and Kiri Te Kanawa's Les Nuits d'Ete, which is ravishing in terms of sheer vocalism but otherwise vacant. Daniel Barenboim's slack conducting does the piece no favors, either, which holds true on a much larger scale for his Damnation of Faust. This is a typical Barenboim product, full of lush sounds, excellent singing, big-scale orchestral work, but leading to a meager artistic payoff. Barenboim's Faust isn't remotely competitive with Markevitch, Chung, Solti, Pretre, and others in this work. It's great to hear Domingo in the title role, but the conducting is so routine that I'm not sure the overall experience is worth it.

We get odds and ends of varying quality: the rarely recorded Tristia done superbly by Boulez, an uneven batch of songs that previously appeared in their own double-CD set (a chore to listen to in its entirety, despite the occasional gem), and a pedestrain Harold in Italy conducted by Lorin Maazel in Berlin, a performance that DG surely could have bettered by looking deeper into their vaults.

In all, I can't see investing in such an uneven collection except at super-budget price. If you do a little searching, all the best things here can be gotten separately, and the lesser recordings pale by comparison with classic Berlioz from Colin Davis, Charles Munch, and Igor Markevitch.

5 out of 5 stars Berlioz with immaginative variety.......2003-10-30

This box makes a nice alternative to the Philips boxes under Colin Davis. Not to take anything away from Davis. His Berlioz cycle certainly ranks up there with the elite for recording achievements. But many will not want to invest in all 3 boxes, so Universal has brought us a great compilation of some of Berlioz' best works from a variety of performers with different styles.
The jewel has to be Ozawa's unsurpassed Romeo and Juliet. This 1976 studio recording had its birth at the Tanglewood Festival and features excellent soloists (Julia Hamari, Jose Van Dam, and Jean Dupouy), a very competent choir, and of course the reliable Boston SO. The recording is of outstanding quality. It seems cleaned up a little from what I remember of the CDs from the mid 80s; much more spacious, less muddy sounding. I especially like the chorus in the hushed night scene.
Barenboim's Damnaton is perdictably Furtwangler-like in tempo, and again features top notch singers in Fischer Dieskau, Jules Bastin, & Placido Domingo; Yvonne Minto is probably not in the same class with the others, but she's more than acceptable.
Levine directs a well recorded and balanced classical-sounding Requiem, and Abbado is more than competent in the Te Deum.
Chung's Fantastique is fun and enjoyable, if not first-class.
The rest of the works are very commendable, if not top-of-the-class.
In short, you can't go wrong for the price, and if you love Berlioz' Romeo, you've got to get this box just for the Ozawa gem.

Timba is the supercharged successor to salsa, and this Miami-based, Grammy-nominated group is one of hottest exponents of this still-evolving genre. Led by keyboardist/arranger Jorge Gomez, a graduate of Cuba's famed Escuela Nacional de Arte, and vocalist Joaquin (El Kid) Diaz , this unit lights it up with a fiery, Earth, Wind and Fire-style horn section, rap-friendly vocals, and killer Afro-Cuban percussion. Aside from a spirited update of the Aldalberto Alvarez classic cha cha cha, "A Bayamo en Coche," the selections are original compositions with a dancing agenda, including the title track, the infectious descarga "Manos Pa'rriba," and the Weather Report-like sound of "Ven a Bailar." All told, this disc is an excellent follow-up to their 2005 effort, Arroz Con Mango. With larger recording budgets and even more expansive musical vistas, who knows how far this band will go. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

3 out of 5 stars Good CD but not great.......2007-02-09

I really liked the first cd but this one seems to somewhat repeat the first. I'm really a timba fan and expected this new cd to experiment with different sounds and it just did not. I hope the next cd moves towards good timba music like Klimax, or Charanga.

4 out of 5 stars Buena Timba Fuerte.......2007-01-06

Este disco se destaca por ritmos agresivos, montunos medio locos, y una musicalidad de alta clase. Todos los musicos tocan bien. Este es definitivamente para fiestas, baile, y los que les guste la musica latina agresiva.

If rap is, as Chuck D claimed, "the CNN of the streets," then Puerto Rico's Afro-derived plena is the Internet of the Antilles. Spawned in the 19th century, the genre features three tambourine-like pandero hand drums and topical, news-oriented lyrics. In 1994, bassist Gary Nunez formed the Plena Libre ensemble. The title of this CD translates as "we are having fun." The group updates plena classics by Angel Torruellas, Mon Rivera, and Rafael Cepeda with a rhythm section, four trombones, percussion and keyboards. Special guests trumpeter Charlie Sepulveda and violinist Alfredo de la Fe provide the jazz tinge on the engaging instrumental, "Lluvia Con Nieve," and the processional pulsations of "Juan Jose" are sonically signatured by William Cepeda's ebullient trombone. "Tributo A Rafael Cortijo Y Su Combo" is a soulful salute to the great Puerto Rican composer who put this music on the map. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great authentic Puerto Rican plena............2007-04-08

For those of you who think that Puerto Rico's greatest musical claim to fame is a toss-up between salsa and reggaeton, I suggest you check out this CD for a great introduction to one of their ORIGINAL musical claims to fame. Plena is a great, syncopated up-tempo style of music, complete with percussion and charged vocals. Traditionally speaking, plena was a means of communicating important news and social issues to the masses, through its lyrics.

Plena Libre does a wonderful job of capturing the sound and flavor of plena with their tunes (some of them original, others old favorites). Some of my favorite cuts include "Olvidalo," "Canario Blanco" and "Tributo a Rafael Cortijo" (Cortijo was one of Puerto Rico's late, great musicians). This album is sizzling. Buy it today.

5 out of 5 stars Festive.......2006-06-18

We love listening to this CD. Makes us want to dance and party.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty, Plenty Good.......2004-12-21

If you are a Gringo, like I am, you relate explanations of Latin sounds to our own experience. So...,imagine the lazy backbeat of New Orlean's Second Line.. Mix in the raucos marching rhytm of Carnaval in Brazil. Add splashes of rollicking piano Rhumba and braying Salsa trombones, and finally great coro harmony singing of Puerto Rico and you "has it"!

5 out of 5 stars Always Great!.......2004-06-21

This cd is great just like all the plean libre cd's. Definitley go and buy this one. But like the review before me said nothing is like seeing them live.

5 out of 5 stars Better and Better.......2004-06-19

Plena Libre are one of the true gems of Puerto Rican music and every time I hear them, they just get better and better. This latest disc is a knockout... although still not quite as good as seeing them live!
