5 out of 5 stars Brings back visit to Hawaii.......2005-12-10

I had no idea what Slack Key Guitar was until finally took the wrapper off this CD and played it. Love this CD. Very relaxing. Great backgound music-can let it play all day. Brings back the memories of our visit to Hawaii.

5 out of 5 stars I judge all my other slack key cds against this one..........2000-06-02

Bought it on May 17. Ended up buying 11 (and counting) other slack key music cds. But still my favorite overall. I can't sing, but do want to learn to play slack key, so this instrumental cd of solo (no other instrument) slack key inspires me. You will not go wrong buying this one!

The mellow performances match my personality, and bring to mind images of balmy breezes and swaying trees.

I've been looking for another instrumental cd of solo slack key performances, but have yet to find one that matches this one...except maybe Ozzie Kotani's, and Ledward Kaapana's live CD.

If you are wanting to play slack key, listen to this one and hear what can be achieved, without being distracted by other instruments.

4 out of 5 stars I am ashamed.......2000-12-05

to admit that I purged this disc from my collection a few years ago. What was I thinking? Hearing the short clips here at Amazon.com reminded me of this embarrassing oversight.

The words "fresh" and "honest" come to mind when hearing this music. Scott says that they wrote most of the songs a week or two before recording, and you can hear the freshness of the songs and the honesty of the peformances on the disc. POL melded the harmonic sweetness of pop, the energy of punk and the rawness of indie to create an intriguing sound. Mind you, it took some time for Scott Hunter's voice to grow on me, but the execution of the other musicians is outstandingly crisp and the songs well conceived. What I like best is the way they threw caution to the wind and went after all sorts of musical ideas, especially rhythmically. I'm looking forward to having this gem back in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta love the Sprinkles.......2000-10-29

I first heard of Poor Old Lu in my Church Junior High group. Every Sunday, after church, More, the first song of Mindsize, their first album, would start. I asked my youth pastor who they were, he replied Poor Old Lu. My youth pastor was also Dave Sprinkle, father to Jessie and Aaron Sprinkle, half of Poor Old Lu. To me, Sin was, excepting A Picture of the Eighth Wonder, The best album they put out. Containing the classic Cannon Fire Orange, which has shown up on many albums, and such items as Sickly, a great, slow-moving song, and Bones are Breaking, one of the less understood songs, made this a memorable album. I lost my last copy somewhere in Russia, but I will be getting this and Chrono soon, putting me 1-2 albums away from owning all of their music, depending on whether or not my copy of S^4 survives long.

5 out of 5 stars in my humble opinion.......2000-10-01

This is my favorite album of all time as performed by my favorite band of all time. Tight, clean production, matched with strong hooks and introspective lyrics make this a must have for anyone who has ever wanted to think while they rock. Buy it if you treasure what the early 90's contributed to the growth and maturity of alternative music. A groundbreaker, to be sure.

5 out of 5 stars This is arguably their best album..........2000-07-19

Poor Old Lu is by far one of the greatest Christian bands ever. It is a shame that so few people have heard of them. Sin is the album that truly out POL on the map as a groundbreaking band. Poor Old Lu has a sound that is completely their own. This isn't a rehash of stuff that has been done before. If you are curious about this band, wait no further, buy this album now. You will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars A precurser to a lot of things..........1999-12-05

In a thousand ways, this cd only begins to show the real musical passion and genious that the sprinkles posses. This is the album that led both jesse and aaron into solo music careers that have brought out a lot of beautiful insight to the christian music industry. In this way, come to me is a very beautiful song. Jesse is more than just a drummer; aaron is more than just a guitar player. Poor old lu is more than just a band and this album, in my opinion, displays that fact very clearly.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Top Christian Rock Albums Ever.......2004-04-18

This album is among the best Christian music recordings I have heard, and possibly the best in the harder rock category. Every track has a mystic, ethereal quality which seems to trancend the sum of its parts. While not the loudest, craziest rock album out there, this album packs a musical and lyrical intensity that is difficult to find elsewhere. Each song seems to give a unique, poetic insight into the vocalist's life, and the lyrics are in no way derivative of any other Christian band.

While every track is good, standouts include opener "Revolve," "Now," "A Month of Moments," "Friday to Sunday," and the title track. The first three feature big guitar riffs, with "Month" showing distinct blues influences, and present a unique and artful style of rock. "Friday to Sunday" touches on a unique theme in Christian music, the thoughts of the disciples from the crucifixion to the resurrection (hence the title) and then relates this despair and joy to the singer's own emotions. "The Waiting Room" is by far the best cut on the album. It features a long introduction, something most rock songs shy away from these days, and metaphoric which builds to a shrieking climax. It is a songwriting masterpiece, and it is worth buying the whole album just to own this cut.

Throughout the album, production, musicianship and vocals are excellent. The detailed craftsmanship sets this album apart and rewards multiple listenings. That said, it is not for everyone. It consciously avoids rock and Christian rock cliches and revels in mood and atmosphere. Those searching for sing-along choruses, danceable grooves, or head-banging metal should look at any of the thousands of look-alike bands in either secular or Christian music. But, for serious fans of any genre, this album is an excellent pick.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Comeback.......2003-01-16

Not sure what the previous reviewer was smoking . . . but this is now my favorite Poor Old Lu album overall and I've been playing it over and over. What a great comeback. Poor Old Lu does what they do best, giving us uplifting, amazing songs and great musicianship (as always). I love their back catalog, but I feel that this album is strongest and most consistent. I've seen them play live on a number of occasions, and I can't wait to see them play the stuff on this album.

I am tremendously excited by this album and I hope it's not their last!

1 out of 5 stars boring letdown.......2002-12-11

I've been a fan of PoLu since "Sin." And in my opinion, this album takes a big, fat, boring leak on their legacy. I am annoyed that I spent ten bucks to get it used (I note a few days later the used price is going south - apparently I'm not the only one who doesn't want their copy).

To be plain, where the other poor old lu albums were fresh, where they were exciting, where they jazzed your ears and made you get up and rock... this album serves you a big old pot of boredom stew. If you listen to any new indie music, this will sound like the unoriginal retread that it is. It's not even boring in that it repeats their old stuff; it's different from their old stuff in bad ways. It's over-produced, for one. There are no rough edges, everything interesting has been dulled by studio professionalism. And the music, the band...they sound like some lame arena rock hosers. Scott's voice is still distinctive and interesting but he is stuck singing some pretty annoying, unoriginal songs.

If you are new to poor old lu, start elsewhere. Sin, Mindsize, Straight Six, Eighth Wonder, they're all worth your time and money. This is not. If you are a longtime poor old lu fan wonder if you'll like this, maybe you will, but I was badly disappointed and regret buying it. I will probably keep it but I doubt I will play it more than the two times I make myself listen to everything I buy...

If you are a poor old lu fan with all their old stuff, why don't you try a different band like modest mouse, cush, the flaming lips, clinic, rainer maria... all of them have albums much better than this snooze-a-thon.

5 out of 5 stars Best Poor Old Lu ever...maybe the best of the year........2002-11-03

I really like this album from beginning to end. Every song is great, they worked hard on this and you can tell. The only albums of 2002 that I think might be better are Rush's Vapor Trails & Sixpence None the Richer's Divine Discontent. Some of the songs remind me a bit of Sunny Day Real Estate, some sound like old Poor Old Lu. The rest sound very fresh and alive. These guys have made a masterpiece. Just listen to the sound files, and even a short piece indicates that this is a strong album.

5 out of 5 stars As good as ever.......2002-10-27

As with all of Poor Old Lu's stuff, I decided to listen to it about a thousand times before reviewing it. Poor Old Lu has the strange quality of sounding better and better every time you hear them. After a few weeks of hearing "The Waiting Room", I can honestly say that this might end out being my favorite album yet. As always, Scott's lyrics have a way of digging into my guts like no one else. The title track has already worked its way into my list of the best songs ever written. Musically and lyrically, this bunch of geeks that I know from church never stops amazing me.

An exquisite collection of songs from the countries surrounding the Mediterranean, the White Sea, in original languauges. S Yanatou has an angelic voice. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Comment on "Gemçis Güzel Günerli" and more.......2005-05-01

First off, this is the best Savina Yannatou CD I've heard to date -- her voice is in terrific form here. (Though you'll get to hear a lot more of the band on her latest release, Sumiglia.)

Second, track 11 ("Gemçis Güzel Günerli") *is* a Turkish song, written by an Aremenian citizen of Turkey, Hrant Kenkulian, or "Udi Hrant," as he's often known -- this is mentioned in the liner notes to Mediterranea. ("Udi" is an honorific prefix meaning that he was a master player of the ud, a Middle Eastern lute.) If you're interested in exploring his music further, there are several recordings of his work (voice, ud, and violin) on the Traditional Crossroads label. (Type "Udi Hrant" into the search engine on this site and you'll find the CDs very easily.)

Turkey was -- and still is -- an ethnically mixed country, which is a legacy of the Ottoman Empire. There were Armenian Turkish composers and musicians at the courts of the Ottoman sultans, and there were those who also excelled at light classical and popular song. Hrant Kenkulian was a master of classical and popular music -- if you explore further, you'll find out that he's one of many 20th-century Armenians who were involved in the development of Turkish music.

Yannatou is an inheritor of Turkish tradition, too. Modern Greece was occupied by the Ottomans for many centuries, and there is a very strong Turkish tinge to much of the Greek music she performs. (And vice versa, as she performs Pontic Greek music from the Black Sea coast of Turkey; also songs from Smyrna -- now called Izmir -- on Turkey's western coast.)

What I love most about her work is her peerless way with all of the songs she chooses. Many people have tried to come up with pan-Mediterranean discs, but Yannatou is one of a handful of people who has succeeded at it.

5 out of 5 stars Gecmis Guzel Gunleri is actually Armenian.......2004-09-22

My professional background is in ethnomusicology. I am not Greek, Turkish or Armenia so I have no axe to grind. One reviewer below, apparently of Turkish background, seems to take offense that Gecmis Guzel Gunleri is not listed as "Turkish Traditional." there is a simple reason for that, it isn't orignially a Turkish song. It is a well known Armenian song, with the same melody for hundred of years. Indeed this rendition is in Turkish, but to call it "Turkish traditional" would be innacurate.

Inded it belongs to, adn illustrates, a whole body of non Turkish music from Turkey which actually speaks to the ethnic cleansing that occured the in the 1900-1920's period.

Few people in today's Turkey, which has been purged of knowledge of the roots of its own tradional music, are aware of the multiethnic roots of its music. It was for years criminal to even suggest that many songs were orignially Greek, Kurdish or Armenian.

So I am glad that my Turkish friend likes the Armenian ballad Gecmis Guzel Gunleri ("The Beautiful Past Days") and am only sorry that he never heard the original recordings by an long dead artist now know in Turkey as Udi Hrant, but whose non stage name was Udi Hrant Kenkulian. His family was murdered in the Turkish Genocide against the Armenians, which makes his song more ever poignant - as the title suggests..

5 out of 5 stars The Meditarranean Soul Captured in One CD!.......2002-04-02

Savina Yannatou has an indescribable soprano voice which captures the sounds and emotions of the Meditarranean people whether Italian, Greek, French (Corsica), Hebrew or Turkish (I may have missed a country or two present on the CD). The wedding song from the Greek island of Kalymnos and the Turkish "aman" song are my favorites. All the songs are so beautifully sung, it is hard to say that one is better than another ... I have heard these two songs before and am familiar with how they should sound: her singing is traditonal with a tenderness and sincerity that is a uniquely her own. Savina's voice is ethereal and "other worldly" - totally living up to her name, after a saint from the Meditarranean, Italy, I think.

I first heard Savina Yannatou on Mondo Greece and knew I must have one of her CDs. I discovered this one and was compelled to buy it. It is filled with the music of Primavera de Salonika, playing kanun, santouri, lyra, and other authentic intstruments that complement Savina's voice. Her voice is beyond description ... totally captivating, exceptional, without comparison. Listen and be amazed - then buy the CD!!! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

This is an excellent CD that I highly recommend. All the songs are great and very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Lu's second Album.......2006-12-03

Lu's second album does much more than just live up to expectations, it surpasses them completley. Lu has been threw a lot in the past year with their break up and they both grew up more, and it completley shows here. Their first single "La Vida Despues De Ti" (Life after you) is such a beautiful ballad, and I am glad it has had such success in the Spanish music scene.
I think "Album" is a perfect name for this CD because I think this is what an album should be. If everybody had the heart, talent, writing skills, and passion for music as Lu does, then the Spanish music would be known for so much more than just reggeaton.
It's hard to compare the two members of Lu, because they both bring something different to the band, and together their chemistry is incredible. My personal favorite song on the Album is "Maria" a beautifel ballad by Mario about a girl named Maria. wow, is all I can say to that song. The other songs on the album are also great. There is not one bad songs on this album, although I like their slow songs better than their up-beat ones.
I think that Lu is a group that will be around for a long time, and I think that any fan of Spanish music should buy this album. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!

5 out of 5 stars MEJOR QUE EL PASADO.......2006-10-10

UN MUY BUEN CD AUNQUE MAS CALMADO QUE SU CD DEBUT PERO VALE LAPENA

5 out of 5 stars Lu's "Album" was Worth the Wait.......2006-09-28

It's not a wonder that the duo known as "Lu" was nominated for so many awards with their first album. They are talented songwriters and great performers.

And now, Lu's sophmore work exceeds expectations. "Album" is more mature and even more heartfelt than their debut offering.

Paty Cantu and Mario Sandoval's music is rich and their lyrics are straight from the heart. Lu's harmonies and style are truly unmatched in today's Latin pop scene. They are among the most talented writer-musicians singing in Spanish today.

The 2 solos by each of the members of this excellent duo are a rare and special treat in this "Album".

The first single, "La Vida Despues de Ti" and the song "Sin un Adios", both written by Paty, are true stand outs. These two songs seem to tell parts of the same story in a very personal way.

Paty and Mario are each accomplished composers and have written songs recorded by other artists, such as Alejandra Guzman. But they have saved some if the best for themselves.

This is a must for any Latin music lover. "La Vida Despues de Ti" will grow on you in a way that only a classic love song can.

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Bunk with help !.......2001-01-10

I have been a vintage Jazz fan for the last fifty years and I must admit that Lu Watters is one of my least favourite bands. I have always found his beat very heavy and plodding. It must be his reliance on the tuba. To be honest there are many superior revival bands.

The reason that I am reviewing this disc is because of the Bunk recordings. Bunk was oner of the pioneer trumpeters and was rediscovered in 1940. To be honest his technique was really lacking and his constant mistakes exasperated Sydney Bechet when they played together. However, I have always liked his style of playing off the beat and catching up. On this disc he is featured with Lu Watter's sidemen notably Turk Murphy, Ellis Horn and Clancy Hayes. This was a great mix, some of the sides are inspired especially Careless Love with Bunk and Ellis Horn's clarinet. The two gospel sidesz When I Reach for the Sky and Nobody's fault but mine are two of the best I have heard. With the exception of Bunk's atrocious vocal on Down by the Riverside, the remaining sides especially Girls Go Crazy show great ensemble playing and are very musical. Apparently there were other sides cut but these have been lost, which is a pity.

If you like Bunk then listen to his work with George Lewis and also a recent release, The Bunk Project with none other than Woody Allan on a very passable clarinet.

Excellent playing by Bunk Johnson(his absolute best), Lu Watters aint bad either, in fact these two masters practicly started the Dixieland revival(along with Muggsy Spannier) in the late 30's/early 40's. This CD is a must have for Dixieland lovers, and colelctors of Bunk Johnson.

5 out of 5 stars SIZZLING BLUES VOCALS WITH A TIGHT BAND - LIVE.......2001-02-21

I haven't heard Teresa perform live in 12 years, doing covers in Pasadena. Since then, I have become a big fan of the songs from her debut CD, "The Whole Enchilada" and I couldn't wait to hear this live cd. After hearing it for the first time, I thought it would take some time before I got used to these new LIVE versions of songs that I have lived with since buying her previous CD. It did - about 2 hours. By the time I had listened through the entire cd a couple times, I was enjoying these tunes as much as I always had. All the strengths of the studio cd are present here - Teresa's passionate,blues-drenched vocals, plus skilled musicianship and the solid songwriting of Terry Wilson. In addition, this cd features much more of Teresa's fine New Orleans-style piano playing and gives each talented member of the Rhythm Tramps a chance to shine. After all, this is a band best known for their live shows and this cd captures them playing for a crowd of their most appreciative fans.

The cd features 13 songs written or co-written by Terry Wilson, including 7 new ones. Among the hi-lights for me are : the "Little Feat" flavored "I Want a Love" featuring the precise drumming and percussion of James Cruce and Debra Dobkin, The soulful ballad "In My Dreams" showcasing tight harmonies & soulful sax playing of Jerry Peterson, The best version of "The Trouble With Angels" I've ever heard, Teresa's emotional vocals on the ballads "Something's Happening", "I Know What Love Can Do" and "Love is For All Time" (with an amazing guitar solo bt Billy Watts), The jump-out of -your -seat tunes "She's Got the Bug, "Shake a Leg", and "Trying Not to Laugh", and a very playful version of the standard "My Boy Lollipop, again featuring Jerry Peterson's sax work. My only complaint about this cd is that I so wanted to hear live versions of a couple other favorite tunes from the studio cd, "Dangerous" & "Meet My Maker" but I guess I will just have to wait and request them when I see the band live. If you want to hear some great Texas-style blues/rock featuring powerful vocals, great original tunes and tight playing, you need to get this CD - SOON.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Tribute To A Great Jazz Player!.......2006-12-23

Although the price tag for this Box set of Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band is a little steep, considering the number of tracks and the terrific sounds of this largely forgotten man of New Orleans revivalist jazz, it is well worth the price. I first heard of Lu Watters as a kid. My parents had quite a few of his albums, and I used to put them on and listen to them. Not knowing at the time that he was a revivalist. The music on these tracks even sound better than many [if not most] of the originals. I must say, I was totally blown away by his rendition of "South," the Bennie Moten classic from the 1920s. I actually prefer it to Moten's version. [I hope that's not blasphemy!], because I really like Bennie Moten; he is one of my favorite jazz players of the 1920s and early 1930s.

This Box set gives you all the hits that made Lu Watters a staple in many nightclubs. His revival of New Orleans jazz spawned a new awareness among many that there was a begining of great jazz before the swing era hit America full force. The CDs are great, and the Box set comes with a complete listing of [compliment of a 50 plus page booklet] the albums, both 78 and 33 RPM recordings. Also, there are pictures of Watter's and his band. This is a true treasure of a forgotten man. And with 96 tracks in all, you can't go wrong with this wonderful collection of a very forgotten name in jazz.

Some of the many jazz tunes included in this box-set included in this remarkable set are: DISC 1: At Georgia Camp Meeting, Original Jelly Roll Blues, Maple Leaf Rag, Memphis Blues, High Society, Hot House Rag, Tiger Rag, Sunset Cafe Stomp. DISC 2: Terrible Blues, Tempation Rag, Kansas City Stomp, Trombone Rag, Pineapple Rag, New Orleans Blues, Canal Street Blues, Maple Leaf Rag. DISC 3: Big Bear Stomp, Climax Rag, Down Home Rag, SOUTH, 1919 Rag, Working Man Blues, Weary Blues. DISC 4: [alternate recordings of ...] Original Jelly Roll Blues, Canal Street Blues, Antiqua Blues, Pineapple Blues, and many, many others. 96 Great hits in all. Well worth the price. Also, listen to his rendition of SOUTH, it's one of the best I have ever heard. There is a listening sample on the amazon page, I recommend you check the songs out. They are great. And especially his version of SOUTH. I highly recommend the Box set, it is well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars This is where it all began.......2005-12-01

When Lu Watters formed the Yerba Buena Jazz Band, and they played in San Francisco and environs from about 1940-1950, they began the revival of New Orleans Jazz. This album contains all the tunes they recorded for the Good Times label during that decade, including several previously unreleased titles and alternate takes. The accompanying 50+ page booklet is a treasure which includes all the album notes from the original 78 RPM and 33 RPM releases of these recordings, plus additional photos and articles about Watters and the other band members.

The only reason this doesn't rate five stars is the dated sound, which is pretty good for its era.

If you're an aficianado of Traditional Jazz, this set needs to be in your library.

5 out of 5 stars Meraviglioso.......2007-07-12

This is Itaian music at its best, Giuseppe Di Steffano has a warm rich voice to take you right to the heart of Italy.
It is worth buying for one track alone, (which I did) Parlami d'amore Mariu. But what a bonus when all the other tracks are just as good. Be prepared to be serenaded.
