Album Description
"Ki ho'a lu," or slack Key guitar, refers to the altered tunings of the acoustic guitar that are unique to the musical heritage of Hawaii. The beautiful slack Key sound is synonomous with the majic of the Hawaiian Islands. This collection of solo performances features 7 well known slack key guitarists.Customer Reviews:
Brings back visit to Hawaii.......2005-12-10
I judge all my other slack key cds against this one..........2000-06-02
The mellow performances match my personality, and bring to mind images of balmy breezes and swaying trees.
I've been looking for another instrumental cd of solo slack key performances, but have yet to find one that matches this one...except maybe Ozzie Kotani's, and Ledward Kaapana's live CD.
If you are wanting to play slack key, listen to this one and hear what can be achieved, without being distracted by other instruments.

I am ashamed.......2000-12-05
The words "fresh" and "honest" come to mind when hearing this music. Scott says that they wrote most of the songs a week or two before recording, and you can hear the freshness of the songs and the honesty of the peformances on the disc. POL melded the harmonic sweetness of pop, the energy of punk and the rawness of indie to create an intriguing sound. Mind you, it took some time for Scott Hunter's voice to grow on me, but the execution of the other musicians is outstandingly crisp and the songs well conceived. What I like best is the way they threw caution to the wind and went after all sorts of musical ideas, especially rhythmically. I'm looking forward to having this gem back in my collection.

One Of The Top Christian Rock Albums Ever.......2004-04-18
While every track is good, standouts include opener "Revolve," "Now," "A Month of Moments," "Friday to Sunday," and the title track. The first three feature big guitar riffs, with "Month" showing distinct blues influences, and present a unique and artful style of rock. "Friday to Sunday" touches on a unique theme in Christian music, the thoughts of the disciples from the crucifixion to the resurrection (hence the title) and then relates this despair and joy to the singer's own emotions. "The Waiting Room" is by far the best cut on the album. It features a long introduction, something most rock songs shy away from these days, and metaphoric which builds to a shrieking climax. It is a songwriting masterpiece, and it is worth buying the whole album just to own this cut.
Throughout the album, production, musicianship and vocals are excellent. The detailed craftsmanship sets this album apart and rewards multiple listenings. That said, it is not for everyone. It consciously avoids rock and Christian rock cliches and revels in mood and atmosphere. Those searching for sing-along choruses, danceable grooves, or head-banging metal should look at any of the thousands of look-alike bands in either secular or Christian music. But, for serious fans of any genre, this album is an excellent pick.
Spectacular Comeback.......2003-01-16
I am tremendously excited by this album and I hope it's not their last!
boring letdown.......2002-12-11
To be plain, where the other poor old lu albums were fresh, where they were exciting, where they jazzed your ears and made you get up and rock... this album serves you a big old pot of boredom stew. If you listen to any new indie music, this will sound like the unoriginal retread that it is. It's not even boring in that it repeats their old stuff; it's different from their old stuff in bad ways. It's over-produced, for one. There are no rough edges, everything interesting has been dulled by studio professionalism. And the music, the band...they sound like some lame arena rock hosers. Scott's voice is still distinctive and interesting but he is stuck singing some pretty annoying, unoriginal songs.
If you are new to poor old lu, start elsewhere. Sin, Mindsize, Straight Six, Eighth Wonder, they're all worth your time and money. This is not. If you are a longtime poor old lu fan wonder if you'll like this, maybe you will, but I was badly disappointed and regret buying it. I will probably keep it but I doubt I will play it more than the two times I make myself listen to everything I buy...
If you are a poor old lu fan with all their old stuff, why don't you try a different band like modest mouse, cush, the flaming lips, clinic, rainer maria... all of them have albums much better than this snooze-a-thon.
Best Poor Old Lu ever...maybe the best of the year........2002-11-03
As good as ever.......2002-10-27

Comment on "Gemçis Güzel Günerli" and more.......2005-05-01
Second, track 11 ("Gemçis Güzel Günerli") *is* a Turkish song, written by an Aremenian citizen of Turkey, Hrant Kenkulian, or "Udi Hrant," as he's often known -- this is mentioned in the liner notes to Mediterranea. ("Udi" is an honorific prefix meaning that he was a master player of the ud, a Middle Eastern lute.) If you're interested in exploring his music further, there are several recordings of his work (voice, ud, and violin) on the Traditional Crossroads label. (Type "Udi Hrant" into the search engine on this site and you'll find the CDs very easily.)
Turkey was -- and still is -- an ethnically mixed country, which is a legacy of the Ottoman Empire. There were Armenian Turkish composers and musicians at the courts of the Ottoman sultans, and there were those who also excelled at light classical and popular song. Hrant Kenkulian was a master of classical and popular music -- if you explore further, you'll find out that he's one of many 20th-century Armenians who were involved in the development of Turkish music.
Yannatou is an inheritor of Turkish tradition, too. Modern Greece was occupied by the Ottomans for many centuries, and there is a very strong Turkish tinge to much of the Greek music she performs. (And vice versa, as she performs Pontic Greek music from the Black Sea coast of Turkey; also songs from Smyrna -- now called Izmir -- on Turkey's western coast.)
What I love most about her work is her peerless way with all of the songs she chooses. Many people have tried to come up with pan-Mediterranean discs, but Yannatou is one of a handful of people who has succeeded at it.
Gecmis Guzel Gunleri is actually Armenian.......2004-09-22
Inded it belongs to, adn illustrates, a whole body of non Turkish music from Turkey which actually speaks to the ethnic cleansing that occured the in the 1900-1920's period.
Few people in today's Turkey, which has been purged of knowledge of the roots of its own tradional music, are aware of the multiethnic roots of its music. It was for years criminal to even suggest that many songs were orignially Greek, Kurdish or Armenian.
So I am glad that my Turkish friend likes the Armenian ballad Gecmis Guzel Gunleri ("The Beautiful Past Days") and am only sorry that he never heard the original recordings by an long dead artist now know in Turkey as Udi Hrant, but whose non stage name was Udi Hrant Kenkulian. His family was murdered in the Turkish Genocide against the Armenians, which makes his song more ever poignant - as the title suggests..
The Meditarranean Soul Captured in One CD!.......2002-04-02
I first heard Savina Yannatou on Mondo Greece and knew I must have one of her CDs. I discovered this one and was compelled to buy it. It is filled with the music of Primavera de Salonika, playing kanun, santouri, lyra, and other authentic intstruments that complement Savina's voice. Her voice is beyond description ... totally captivating, exceptional, without comparison. Listen and be amazed - then buy the CD!!! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

Lu's second Album.......2006-12-03
I think "Album" is a perfect name for this CD because I think this is what an album should be. If everybody had the heart, talent, writing skills, and passion for music as Lu does, then the Spanish music would be known for so much more than just reggeaton.
It's hard to compare the two members of Lu, because they both bring something different to the band, and together their chemistry is incredible. My personal favorite song on the Album is "Maria" a beautifel ballad by Mario about a girl named Maria. wow, is all I can say to that song. The other songs on the album are also great. There is not one bad songs on this album, although I like their slow songs better than their up-beat ones.
I think that Lu is a group that will be around for a long time, and I think that any fan of Spanish music should buy this album. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
MEJOR QUE EL PASADO.......2006-10-10
Lu's "Album" was Worth the Wait.......2006-09-28
And now, Lu's sophmore work exceeds expectations. "Album" is more mature and even more heartfelt than their debut offering.
Paty Cantu and Mario Sandoval's music is rich and their lyrics are straight from the heart. Lu's harmonies and style are truly unmatched in today's Latin pop scene. They are among the most talented writer-musicians singing in Spanish today.
The 2 solos by each of the members of this excellent duo are a rare and special treat in this "Album".
The first single, "La Vida Despues de Ti" and the song "Sin un Adios", both written by Paty, are true stand outs. These two songs seem to tell parts of the same story in a very personal way.
Paty and Mario are each accomplished composers and have written songs recorded by other artists, such as Alejandra Guzman. But they have saved some if the best for themselves.
This is a must for any Latin music lover. "La Vida Despues de Ti" will grow on you in a way that only a classic love song can.
Enjoy!

Bunk with help !.......2001-01-10
The reason that I am reviewing this disc is because of the Bunk recordings. Bunk was oner of the pioneer trumpeters and was rediscovered in 1940. To be honest his technique was really lacking and his constant mistakes exasperated Sydney Bechet when they played together. However, I have always liked his style of playing off the beat and catching up. On this disc he is featured with Lu Watter's sidemen notably Turk Murphy, Ellis Horn and Clancy Hayes. This was a great mix, some of the sides are inspired especially Careless Love with Bunk and Ellis Horn's clarinet. The two gospel sidesz When I Reach for the Sky and Nobody's fault but mine are two of the best I have heard. With the exception of Bunk's atrocious vocal on Down by the Riverside, the remaining sides especially Girls Go Crazy show great ensemble playing and are very musical. Apparently there were other sides cut but these have been lost, which is a pity.
If you like Bunk then listen to his work with George Lewis and also a recent release, The Bunk Project with none other than Woody Allan on a very passable clarinet.

SIZZLING BLUES VOCALS WITH A TIGHT BAND - LIVE.......2001-02-21
The cd features 13 songs written or co-written by Terry Wilson, including 7 new ones. Among the hi-lights for me are : the "Little Feat" flavored "I Want a Love" featuring the precise drumming and percussion of James Cruce and Debra Dobkin, The soulful ballad "In My Dreams" showcasing tight harmonies & soulful sax playing of Jerry Peterson, The best version of "The Trouble With Angels" I've ever heard, Teresa's emotional vocals on the ballads "Something's Happening", "I Know What Love Can Do" and "Love is For All Time" (with an amazing guitar solo bt Billy Watts), The jump-out of -your -seat tunes "She's Got the Bug, "Shake a Leg", and "Trying Not to Laugh", and a very playful version of the standard "My Boy Lollipop, again featuring Jerry Peterson's sax work. My only complaint about this cd is that I so wanted to hear live versions of a couple other favorite tunes from the studio cd, "Dangerous" & "Meet My Maker" but I guess I will just have to wait and request them when I see the band live. If you want to hear some great Texas-style blues/rock featuring powerful vocals, great original tunes and tight playing, you need to get this CD - SOON.

A Great Tribute To A Great Jazz Player!.......2006-12-23
This Box set gives you all the hits that made Lu Watters a staple in many nightclubs. His revival of New Orleans jazz spawned a new awareness among many that there was a begining of great jazz before the swing era hit America full force. The CDs are great, and the Box set comes with a complete listing of [compliment of a 50 plus page booklet] the albums, both 78 and 33 RPM recordings. Also, there are pictures of Watter's and his band. This is a true treasure of a forgotten man. And with 96 tracks in all, you can't go wrong with this wonderful collection of a very forgotten name in jazz.
Some of the many jazz tunes included in this box-set included in this remarkable set are: DISC 1: At Georgia Camp Meeting, Original Jelly Roll Blues, Maple Leaf Rag, Memphis Blues, High Society, Hot House Rag, Tiger Rag, Sunset Cafe Stomp. DISC 2: Terrible Blues, Tempation Rag, Kansas City Stomp, Trombone Rag, Pineapple Rag, New Orleans Blues, Canal Street Blues, Maple Leaf Rag. DISC 3: Big Bear Stomp, Climax Rag, Down Home Rag, SOUTH, 1919 Rag, Working Man Blues, Weary Blues. DISC 4: [alternate recordings of ...] Original Jelly Roll Blues, Canal Street Blues, Antiqua Blues, Pineapple Blues, and many, many others. 96 Great hits in all. Well worth the price. Also, listen to his rendition of SOUTH, it's one of the best I have ever heard. There is a listening sample on the amazon page, I recommend you check the songs out. They are great. And especially his version of SOUTH. I highly recommend the Box set, it is well worth the price.
This is where it all began.......2005-12-01
The only reason this doesn't rate five stars is the dated sound, which is pretty good for its era.
If you're an aficianado of Traditional Jazz, this set needs to be in your library.
