By now, Selena's recordings are like familiar friends, dropping in once a year or so to show off a new outfit that feels familiar, only it's prettied up in some new way. Ones offers 19 of the late Tejano diva's biggest hits, including the bittersweet crossover ballads "I Could Fall in Love" and "Dreaming of You." Every song sparkles with Selena's irresistible personality and rich, full-throttle delivery, especially impressive considering she was in her late teens and early 20s when most of these songs were recorded. The new addition here is "Con Tanto Amor," a three-song medley of "Amor Prohibido," "Si Una Vez," and "Como La Flor," that achieves added poignancy as a ballad. Ones also comes packaged with a DVD featuring Selena's complete video collection, from the shoestring-budget "La Carcacha" to the elegant "No Me Queda Mas." --Joey Guerra

When George Strait's "She'll Leave You With a Smile" moved to the top of the country charts in early 2003, the handsome Lone Star crooner bested Conway Twitty for the most No. 1 singles by a solo artist. This collection of 50 chart-toppers, spanning 22 years, showcases the Cadillac of country singers at his best, blending traditional and contemporary stylings, but never straying too far from the core of his Texas barroom sound. "Fool Hearted Memory," from 1982, proves that Strait had his uncluttered production and straightforward vocal approach down from the start, no matter how many producers guided him to his peak. Through the years, the path to superstardom dictated that he trade the crisp Western swing of "Right or Wrong" and "Ace in the Hole" for squishy, mid-tempo crowd pleasers like "Check Yes or No" and "Write This Down." But he redeemed himself with such poignant heartbreakers as "So Much Like My Dad" and "…Smile." This retrospective's one new track, "I Hate Everything," about a man in a bar who's besotted more from pain than whiskey, doesn't match up with the singer's best material, but it's still got that irresistible Strait hook: average-guy sincerity wrapped in a down-to-earth heart. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great but a little misleading.......2007-07-12

I love George Strait but I get tired of hearing about how great it is that he has 50 plus # 1 songs.
In the Country world that is fine.
But when they say that's it's more than any other artist of any style of music it's very misleading.
Pop/Rock acts like Elvis and the Beatles did not have a chart just for their style.
Pop merely means Popular, what is the biggest out of everything out there.
It's an all genre chart.
Therefore, when a "Pop" act reaches the charts that they have been labled for, it does not mean "Pop" music it means all genres of Popular music.
It is much more difficult to even make the top 40 on this chart, let alone # 1.
When Strait has a #1 song it is only the biggest Country song.
When Pop acts have a #1 it is literally the biggest song in the U.S. period.
Strait only competes with Country artist.
On Billboard Elvis himself had 30 top 10 Country singles and 11 #1 Country songs and 13 if you add Cash Box which is what this Strait set included as well, and Elvis is not even a Country Singer, but a various style vocalist.
Elvis Worldwide has had 91 different #1 songs, most of them coming between the U.S and U.K or Canada.
On Billboard alone if you count all the various Billboard charts, Country, POPULAR, R&B, Christmas, and Adult Contemporary Elvis has a total of 34 different #1's and 38 if you count Cash Box.
That is still less than Strait in the U.S., but when you consider that 18 to 21 of them are on the POPULAR chart, where you are up agaisnt all styles and not merely one type of music, it is more than equal.
If you combine all the Billboard charts again Elvis had nearly 70 top Ten singles and over 70 with Cash Box added.
40 of these were on the All Genre chart, just as impressive as a # 1 on a non all genre chart.
Elvis also has 151 Hot 100 Billboard songs, 104 Billboard top 40 hits, 154 Woldwide Top 10 hits and 91 woldwide #1's
Strait has no #1's in other countries or on any other American charts besides Country.
Strait has 34 Gold and Platnium awards for his albums by the RIAA, Elvis has 81 in albums alone.
Add the 53 singles and 16 Extended Play albums and Elvis has 150 Gold or Platnium awards.
George Strait is a great Country Singer, Elvis Presley is the King of Music.
That being said, this is a great double disc set of George Strait's
I am not attempting to bash Strait, I am a big fan.
Nevertheless, I am bashing those you don't know enough about the charts when they start making comparisons to Elvis Presley.

5 out of 5 stars George Strait 50 Number Ones.......2007-06-09

This is a fantastic CD! It has all of George's #1 hits in one place. I love his music because it's true country. His voice is so smooth and the CD offers a variety of ballads, upbeat tempos and swing. It's a great variety of music on one CD. He's so talented and really knows how to choose songs for his CD's. The only thing about this one is that it doesn't include "Amarillo by Morning". I would have thought it would have also been a #1 hit. This is a great CD and I would highly recommend it to anyone, country music lover or not!

On March 25, the remarkable Elton John proudly turned 60 years old. To celebrate the occasion, he performed his 60th concert at Madison Square Garden, and two days later released a newly compiled and digitally remastered collection of his greatest hits from past to present. This over 78-minute-long compilation is the first-ever single disc to cover the first 35 years of the great singer-songwriter's career. This limited edition comes with a bonus DVD, containing 5 live performances from the NBC broadcast of Elton's Red Piano concert, including his hits "Bennie and the Jets," "Rocket Man," "Candle in the Wind 1997," "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," and "Your Song." It also features 5 music videos, including "Your Song," "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," "I'm Still Standing," and "I Want Love"--the latter featuring Robert Downey Jr.--plus Elton's new video for his latest single, "Tinderbox," only available here.

4 out of 5 stars One disc is not enough........2007-07-14

It is hard enough to fit all of Elton's hits on to 2 cds. So you can imagine that a single disc collection is missing some great tunes. For my money, I'll take "Greatest Hits 1970-2002."

5 out of 5 stars Over the Top, as Usual.......2007-06-02

This is a great collection for any EJ fan. Not only are all his best hits included, the videos are just as great! Anyone who calls themselves an Elton John fan should have this CD/DVD combo. The only better collection of his greatest hits would be if his 60th birthday concert was released as a live recording, either on CD or as a DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Love him or loathe him........2007-05-23

Good old Elton: spats with George Michael, agony aunt to the Beckhams, adopted daddy to Robbie Williams, songwriter on Billy Elliot's stage reinvention, not to mention his birthday's celebration.
It's a wonder the man, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, has time for a pop career at all.
But what a colourful career it has been. Love him or loathe him, in terms of sales and lasting popularity the singer, with over three decades of back catalogue, has more than earned his superstar status.
Never a conventional looker with his Lily Savage specs and rug bouffant, John's ability to dip into soul, disco and country as well as classic pop and progressive rock on tracks such as "Tiny Dancer", "Rocket Man", "Your Song", "Sacrifice' and "I'm Still Standing", has made him a musical legend.
Through sales slumps and well-publicised fall-outs with lyricist Bernie Taupin, the music maestro has managed more comebacks than Cher's Farewell tour.
To mark the occasion of his 60th birthday, Elton John releases a special edition 2-disc edition that includes a bonus DVD featuring five promo videos spanning the last four decades and five prevously unreleased tracks from his legendary Red Piano Las Vegas show.
The main CD features 18 tracks of hits spanning the likes of "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Candle In The Wind", including "Tiny Dancer" (the song that was immortalised by the filmmaker Cameron Crowe in his fictional rockumentary "Almost Famous").
The collection veers more towards his Seventies' work and mixes the ballads with the rowdier numbers such as "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting") and "I'm Still Standing".
Some of the tracks are overly sentimental, particularly the latter stuff, but there's no getting away from the quality of recordings such as "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" and "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long Long Time)".
Fans will lap it up as part of the birthday celebrations, even though there's been a better "greatest hits" collection only few years ago.
But it's hard to begrudge such an enduring and popular artist his place in the limelight, particularly now that he's reached 60 years of age.
On the whole this is as solid a compilation as anyone who lacks a bit of Elton in their collection could wish for.

5 out of 5 stars Rocket Man, Number Ones by Elton John.......2007-05-17

Rocket Man - Number Ones is a two disc set. On the first disc you get seventeen songs. Twelve are tried and true number ones and include hits like "Bennie & The Jets" and "Can You Feel The Love Tonight?"

One of my favorites is "Tiny Dancer", a song written about Maxine Feibelmann, a dancer who was on tour with Elton and who later married Bernie Taupin. They are divorced now, but the song will forever be a beautiful story and mind's eye visual performance to me. Close your eyes when you listen, you can see her dance.

Now, one song I would have liked on this compilation is "Ticking." That is just me, and that song is another of my all-time favorites.

When you're finished listening to disc one, you'll be filled with memories of where you were and what you were doing at the time each of the songs hit the airwaves. It was a nice return to the past. You can sing along, wash dishes, take a walk, or just listen. It was nice to have all the hits in one place.

As much as I love the music, I really loved the second disc in the set. The DVD is also broken up into two sections.

Five videos (the good kind - the when MTV was all about videos kind) are on the disc. "Tinderbox" is nostalgic and you see some of the old band mates when they were young and footage of shows and concerts, bus trips and plane rides. The cinematography is awesome and I'm not sure if I watched or listened more.

If you remember "I Want Love", this is a haunting piece that uses Robert Downey, Jr. He's in an empty apartment looking for love with sad eyes, hardwood floors, a fireplace and great windows. I think I want to live there. Although the focus in this piece is on Downey, Elton sings lyrics that weave a story. You will also smile at the video of "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues." This video hits home now with the war and so many soldiers leaving and returning to the United States. At the end of the "Your Song" video, I clapped. In my study, alone with my cat, Gus, I clapped at my laptop screen.

Don't fear if you're a fan of live music. This compilation has something on there for you as well. You can see performances from Elton's "The Red Piano Show" in Las Vegas.

I loved the concert footage. I forgot how great Elton John was on stage. I saw him in Cleveland a long time ago. I was a size 5 then, more interested in scanning the crowd for boys then appreciating that I was in the presence of a fantastic performer. Oh, so is youth.

Speaking of youth, if you are a bit older, like me, this is a great CD to share with your kids. They will get a good review of Elton's work and also get to see him perform.

Like the Beatles and Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson is one of the handful of artists that can release an album of their number one singles. Number Ones includes his solo chart toppers in the UK and abroad from the period beginning with his Off the Wall album right up to the new song "One More Chance", a collaboration with R Kelly. The remaining 17 songs on the album are all classics drawn from the disco-soul Off the Wall, the funky Thriller, the good Bad, the safe Dangerous, the semi-best-of History and the weak Invincible. Regardless of whether the bulk of Number Ones has appeared on other greatest hits albums, this is still an incredible selection of Michael Jackson's best music. --Georgina Collins

5 out of 5 stars "NUMBER ONES" REALLY ARE!.......2004-01-18

Michael Jackson is still #1 to a lot of music lovers, and "NUMBER ONES" quickly shows you why! His vocal versatility and unique creativity cannot be denied. This CD has something for everyone, and "One More Chance" is at the top of the list. Jackson faves like "Billie Jean," "Black or White," "You Are Not Alone," "The Earth Song," and "You Rock My World" are also included for good measure, and this Michael Jackson effort may be one of his very best yet. Buy it; you'll be glad you did!

1 out of 5 stars Curse Epic and Tommy M.......2004-01-18

First, before I rip this album a new one I must say that I am a huge Michael Jackson fan/supporter and IF YOU WANT HIS GREATEST HITS YOU HAVE TO BUY ALL HIS ALBUMS :). Number Ones is a pathetic greatest hits collection. Most of the songs on here are cut short. Example: You Are Not Alone starts out with MJ singing on the first note which he does not do on the album version and it fades out way early. One More Chance (the only new song) is the worst song R. Kelly has written for Michael. It's not a bad song, but R. Kelly should have kept it to himself. Michael should have submitted one of his own songs. R. Kelly can write better songs, just look at Cry or You Are Not Alone. One More Chance has a one line chorus and it sounds like it belongs on an R. Kelly record. Another problem with this record is the name Number Ones. Most of these songs didn't make it to number one, in fact many didn't even crack the top 10. If you own all of the albums and you want the song one more chance, just buy the single. I own both, but most people shouldn't bother unless they care about a complete collection. This collection is a weak display of MJ's amazing talent. It basically contains radio versions of his songs so they can put more on the cd. I love michael and know that he is innocent. I can't wait for his new album. I think MJ released this just to fullfil his record contract. Now he can be free and actually get promoted :).

4 out of 5 stars A Superb Collection From The No.1 King Of Pop!.......2004-01-15

As the first few weeks of 2004 are upon us, and I'm sure Michael Jackson will be hoping that this year will bring him better luck than 2003 did. Despite dominating the tabloids with his appearance, the baby-dangling incident and THAT Martin Bashir interview, Michael Jackson still remains the King of Pop. There's some people who are famous. There are some people who are superstars. There are some people who are icons - and then there's Michael Jackson. Arguably the most famous entertainer alive, Jackson's 30 years reign on the charts is unchallenged.

So that's precisely why Michael's latest release, "Number Ones," is essential for all fans of brilliant music. Since the early 1980's Jackson has captivated the world with his music. We've had fun dancing to his music and cried to his emotional ballads, and that's why he's the greatest male performer ever. His talent is undeniable, and even though he's gone a bit off the rails in recent years, the world and his die-hard fans have never forgotten the music which is what matters the most.

First off, Number Ones is a title that tricks the buyer somewhat. There are eighteen songs on this album, and Jackson has had no where near eighteen US No.1 hits. He's had a total of 13 US No.1 singles, and his last was in 1995. Michael has had 7 UK No.1 hit singles, and his last was in 1997. His first UK No.1 hit was in May 1981 with "One Day In Your Life," which isn't included on here strangely enough. Michael's sixth US No.1 "Say Say Say" is also not included, and I have the UK version which includes "Human Nature" instead of "Man In The Mirror." Silly different regions and record companies! What is the point? Why not just have a complete tracklisting?! Also, "Ben," Michael's first ever US No.1, is included on the US version, but not on the UK version. Instead the UK gets "Blood On The Dancefloor," Michael's last UK No.1 single.

Apart from these minor hiccups, all of Michael's biggest and most popular hits are included here. The album opens with "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You." Both songs are from Michael's debut album Off The Wall and both hit the US top spot. "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and "Thriller" are up next and all from Thriller, Michael's signature album. 50 million copies shifted worldwide, and nothing's going to take over it any time soon! Up next, we have six songs from the follow up to Thriller. Bad was Michael's third album, released in 1987 and sold 25 million copies as well. The songs from Bad on here are "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "Smooth Criminal," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man In The Mirror" and "Dirty Diana." All these songs were huge hits and all were US No.1's, apart from Smooth Criminal.

After this we get "Black Or White," which was a huge US and UK No.1 hit. It's the only song on this compilation album from Michael's fourth album - 1991's Dangerous. "You Are Not Alone" was one of Michael's biggest hits ever, and is next on here, followed by Michael's biggest selling UK single, "Earth Song." No.1 for six weeks and shifting more than 1 million copies this masterpiece is a perfect world peace anthem. Michael's 2001 comeback single "You Rock My World" follows. It wasn't a No.1, so by rights it shouldn't be included here, but it's a great track, so why not? "Break Of Dawn" wasn't even released as a single, so it's got no excuse to be here! It's from Michael's trans-atlantic chart topping Invincible album from 2001. "One More Chance" is Michael's latest single, and will not top the charts by my 'expert' predictions. "Ben" closes the album, which goes back to the very beginning of his career.

OVERALL GRADE: 8/10

I think it was a wise move for Michael Jackson to release Number Ones. It provides new fans in their teens a chance to get to know Michael's best music, for those who were too young to be digging it when 1995's "HIStory" was released, because let's face it, even people in their early teens love Michael's music! I think some minor adjustments could have been made to the tracklisting to improve this album, but it's still not a bad collection and definitely worth the money. Upon its release this album didn't even crack the US Top 10 - Britney stormed to No.1 that week, but in the UK, Number Ones did just that, and went straight to the top of the charts! All in all a brilliant record to add to any Michael Jackson collection.

5 out of 5 stars Always Number One in My Book!.......2004-01-14

This album is absolutely fablous. It showcases the best of Michael's work in the eighties, nineties, and 21st century. Every single song is great and expresses the true genius of this extremely talented and intelligent man. Furthermore, the songs "Man in the Mirror" and "Earth Song" show the humanitarian side of this wonderful human being that those of us that have been his devoted fans for years have known about for a long time. Also, for all you eighties kids out there these songs just might remind you of a simpler time (I know it does for me). Now, there has been some confusion about the track listing because only the first 13 songs were number one hits in the U.S., however "Earth Song" was number one in the U.K., "You Rock My World" was number one in France, and "Break of Dawn" was number one somewhere, I think it was Australia. For some reason Americans seem to think that their charts (and perhaps the charts of Britain) are the only ones that matter. Whether these songs are number one or not is irrelevant though (except for the title) because these are his absolute best songs musically and lyrically. Furthermore, the new song "One More Chance" is wonderful and I truly believe that it could have been yet another number one if people would not let the recent media circus cloud their judgement. This is a genius, megastar at his very best and I highly recommend it to any music fan or music collector. This is definitely a must have for any collector. Here's to hoping there is going to be much more amazing music from this fabulous musician! Long Live Michael Jackson!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This Collection of Hits Truly Is Number "One"!.......2003-12-24

Despite the recent controversy surrounding his personal life, Michael Jackson has long been known as the King Of Pop, and with good reason. For most pop stars, their time in the spotlight lasts maybe 2-3 years before they are reduced to guest appearances on weekly sit-coms or the occassional "info-mercial". This is not true of Jackson, whos reign at the top has carried him through the past 2+ decades since the onset of his solo career after leaving the Jackson Five.

This collection of Number One hits is therefore a must have for any fan of the pop genre. Since the 1980's, Jacksons eclectic, diverse style has seen many landmarks in the music industry, setting new standards, breaking new ground and re-inventing a style that was in its infancy when Jackson came into his own. His pioneering sound created a whole new generation of music and for that he was rewarded the title "King of Pop".

The album features 18 of Jackson most beloved songs, featured in the order which they originally made it to number one. Included on the album are some of his largest breakout hits like "Billy Jean" and Beat It" which both became such huge hits that they are immediately recognizable by audiences today.

The song "Thriller", which also emerged early in Jackson's solo career, firmly planted the superstars reputation as a serious talent in the industry. Not only was Jackson re-inventing the style of music, he was setting a new standard unprecedented in the industry at that time. Music television was only a few years old when the video for "Thriller", a 10+ minute short film, was released for the first time. The video, which was so well produced that it rose immediately to the head of the video industry, set a new level of quality in the genre that artists have been struggling to match since.

The album also features a number of other large hits for Michael, including the songs which added to the early controversy in Jackson's professional career. "Black or White", a song about racial equality again put Jackson in the spotlight for his controversal portrayal of violence against authority. "Bad", "Smooth Criminal", and "Dirty Diana" also feature Jackson's hard driving rythems and smooth, sometimes aggressive lyrics covering a range of topics that has often lead to speculation and ridicule by the press, while at the same time leaving his world-wide hordes of fans clammoring for more.

Some of the more poignant pieces in this collection include songs like "Man In the Mirror", a song where Michael points the finger at himself while pondering the choices in his life.

In all, the album is a great collection of all his number one hits, and is a great look back at the man who created a genre that has grown since he stepped to the front of the class, but never outgrown his talent. With the onset of this generations pop superstars like Justin Timberlake, Brittany Spears and Chrsitina Aguilera, it is a further testimony to his talent and sheer ability that Michael Jackson has remained such a huge part of not only the genre, but the music industry as a whole. Love him or hate him, his talent is unmistakable and unquestionable.

This compilation of hits is a great addition to any music collection, and is a must have for any Jackson fan. For anyone who isn't already familiar with his music, this collection is a great introduction into the mind and soul of a man who reshaped the music industry. Jackson truly is the King of Pop, and through this album, you can enter the gates to his kingdom. Give this album a listen, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Hold on / I'm gonna shoot for the heart.......2005-09-06

I ordered this album without much thought- just assumed a CD filled with #1's should be good... and I was trying to get deeper into classic country music and made the assumption that Conway Twitty would be a good place to start.
It has been three weeks, and this CD has not left my car stereo (unless I need to transport it quickly to another stereo). I'm a 21-year-old woman, and am currently OBSESSED with Conway Twitty, a singer who had barely registered on my music radar a mere month ago.
This is an incredible album, spanning many different time periods of Conway's career, and even includes a couple songs with Loretta that are stunningly beautiful. "As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone" is even included- a song which predominately features the lovely Loretta.
My favorites are #8 (You've Never Been This Far Before) and #25 (Desperado Love). I love all of the songs, to be truthful-- I CAN NOT STOP singing these songs... they bring me such JOY and PEACE.
I completely recommend this album, to all. I've always been a country fan, but owning this album has thrown me into the thralls of beautiful classic country music- where the heart and the soul was inherent within each syllable of each song.

The gravel-and-grits voice of Kenny Rogers ultimately came to define the "Urban Cowboy" era of pop excess, even as the earlier "Lucille" and "The Gambler" were some of the most galvanizing story songs in country music's history. Looking back at this body of hits, it's easy to poke fun at the treacley "You Decorated My Life" or wince at the cheesy string arrangements on "Through the Years." It's also natural to wish Rogers had never heard of Sheena Easton, his misguided duet partner on "We've Got Tonight," and recorded more with the soulful, sad Dottie West ("Every Time Two Fools Collide") and the randy Dolly Parton ("Islands in the Stream"). (A bonus track, "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer," pairs him with old pal Kim Carnes.) As the years went by, Rogers got fatter, lazier, and more content to make crappy TV movies and wallow in the flaccid sentimentality of adult contemporary pop ("Buy Me a Rose"). He also got smug--the worst of sins for a man in his business. But behind the microphone, he always knew how to make even the hoariest of lyrics resonate with feeling. And at his peak, he was the perfect male country superstar, equal parts swagger and sweet, sweet promise. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

They've penned UK #1s in each of four decades. They're the only songwriting team to have written hit singles in each of five decades. They're ranked in the top five most successful recording artists ever, with Barry Gibb being rated as the all-time #3 record producer with the most #1 records (14) to his credit. They're the only recording artists to write and produce six straight #1 singles, and the first composers to have five songs in the Top 10 at the same time. They're also the most covered writers ever with literally thousands of recorded versions of their songs. Add to that seven Grammy Awards and being members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in both the US and Australia and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. This album is a celebration of a lifetime of hits for Robin, Barry, and Maurice.

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection + Bonus DVD.......2006-08-25

Are there such beings as Bee Gees afficionados? Whether the answer is yes or no, given all the hits these guys had over the decades, it's ridiculous to nitpick over which songs attained which rankings. To me, the point is fond memories, not re-creating the Billboard charts, and this CD and DVD set succeeds brilliantly at that.

Songs on the CD are a nice combination of 1960s classics like "I Started a Joke," "I've Gotta Get a Message to You," and "Massachusetts" with the '70s dance songs "Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever," and "You Should be Dancing," plus a few from the '80s. Is this the "ultimate" collection? That depends on which Bee Gees songs you like most. To me, these do nicely.

The Bonus DVD is short and a little overly staged for my taste -- it's the boys performing 5 songs live in an English TV studio that reminds me more of the old Dinah Shore Show than a real concert. It's not that the footage is old...it's not...it just looks a little small time for such a world-renowned act. Maybe they were just going for "intimate." In any case, they look and sound good, and it's nice to see them all live without committing a whole evening.

Overall, it's a good collection of 19 pop songs that formed part of the soundtrack to my early teen years. And, especially with the extra DVD, there are far worse ways to spend $13.

4 out of 5 stars Curious compilation of great music.......2006-04-01

It's another year, and therefore there must be another Bee Gees compilation. Just in time for the 2005 Christmas shopping season brought us "Love Songs". Earlier in the year, this release was issued, without much fanfare. As to the claim of all songs being "numnber ones", the liner notes state that all songs made No. 1 somewhere around the world, or were on an album that made No. 1 somwhere around the world, but other than that there are no further details, and we just have to take the label's word for it...

"Number Ones" (19 tracks, 73 min.) brings a chronological selection of the songs. The first third of the collection brings the 1960s songs that, if anything, have gotten better with the years. "World", "Words", "I Started a Joke" etc. have that instant classic feel, and are the best songs on here. After that we get a couple songs of the transition phase of the early 70s, before diving full head into the Bee Gees' most successfull period 1975-1979 centered around the "Saturday Night Fever" songs. The songs are a soundtrack to the era, but for me personally I prefer the 60s Bee Gees. Only one song on the compilation comes from after 1979, the likeable "You Win Again". The album closes with the 2001 Maurice Gibb tribute track, "Man in the Middle", which is touching but musically unremarkable. This limited edition also comes with a 5 song live DVD, which includes an outstanding version of "Massachusetts".

You cannot call this a "greatest hits" album. For that, too many essential songs such as "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "Nights on Broadway", and "More Than a Woman" are missing. While "Number Ones" certainly contains a lot of great music, the better Bee Gees compilation is the 2001 2CD album "Their Greatest Hits: The Record".

5 out of 5 stars Pisati Giamarco "old fashioned man" says it best.......2005-09-09

I couldn't possibly put it any better than Pisati Giamarco "Old fashioned man" who brought a tear to my eye with his moving tribute to the Bee Gees greatest hits collection. "LISTENING OUR MUSIC MY HEART FLIES OVER THE MOUNTAIN, SWIMS IN THE DEEP OF THE OCEAN, DREAMING LOVE IS ALL AROUND". Beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Couldn't escape if I wanted to.......2007-04-12

The writing team of Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and their respective partners in music and life, Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad, basically invented Europop when they pooled their collective talents and became ABBA. One supposes keeping their past-affiliations names (Hep Stars or the Hootenanny Singers) wasn't quite as catchy. But then they wrote "Waterloo" for a Eurovision song contests and the musical universe suddenly altered.

That one song pretty much laid out the template for Abba's world domination to come. Frothy melodies wed to instantly catchy choruses sung with frothy harmonies by the twin female singers. "Number Ones" captures that cotton candy in all its seventies glory, as the band rocketed from pop-stars to international phenomenon. As their songs moved from the catchy singles like "Ring Ring" and "Waterloo" into the later seventies, ABBA wisely embraced disco and created the immortal "Dancing Queen." They were so insanely wealthy from their worldwide hitmaking that they were forced to take payments in commodities instead of cash, that is how omnipresent the likes of "Dancing Queen" and other dancefloor smashes like "Voulez-Vous" and "Gimme Gimme Gimme" became.

Thus we have yet another ABBA greatest hits. The standard before this was "ABBA - Gold: Greatest Hits," and at a slightly higher cost (but frankly, with more songs than I needed) was "The Definitive Collection." While "Number Ones" boasts remastered sound over "Gold," we lose "Does Your Mother Know" and "Lay All Your Love On Me." ("The Definitive Collection" includes those as well as "Ring Ring.")

It also becomes obvious why this compilation was released as soon as the first song begins to play. Thanks to Madonna, who nicked the hook for her own "Hung Up," "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)" has opened the door for a whole new generation of ABBA fans. That is all fine by me - if a new crew of kids can learn the value of genuine musical composition, then I am willing to give "Number Ones" a hearty recommendation.

3 out of 5 stars Not new remastering.......2007-01-19

Bad news for reviewer Michael Allen, but the official sources confirm these are the 2001 remasters - none have been done since, so if you have the 2001 album reissues, they will sound exactly the same as this. This is just another repackaging job.

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again............2006-12-10

Once again Univeral Music is milking the ABBA cash cow. With the world wide MEGA success of 'ABBA GOLD' why on earth is this compilation needed? With that said, the ONLY territory possibly needing this CD is the USA. Why? The USA is the only country where 'GOLD' has never been remastered or repackaged. In fact, it still has the incorrect ABBA Logo using the wrong font! 3 songs from 'GOLD', "Does Your Mother Know", "Lay All Your Love On Me" & "Thank Your For The Music" have been replaced on 'Number Ones' with "Summer Night CIty" & "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do". For some strange reason, the USA edition only has 18 tracks whereas the European version has inlcuded "Ring Ring" to total 19. (The USA DVD does contain all 19 songs). Another plus for the US is the full versions of "Voulez-Vous" & "The Name Of The Game" are included. (GOLD had the edited versions). If you're looking for a single CD containing most of ABBA's biggest hits, then 'Number Ones' is nice. But for the extra few bucks, I would get double CD 'The Definitive Collection' I choose to give this CD 5 stars because I LOVE ABBA!

5 out of 5 stars It's All About the Money, Money, Money but the Songs Are Incredible........2006-12-09

When a group is as universally popular as ABBA you can rest assured that those in charge of their catalogue will take advantage of this overwhelming popularity. If you were to believe the statistics, the Swedish Super-group has sold more than 360 million units worldwide, making them one of the biggest selling acts in the history of popular music trailing behind The Beatles and Elvis Presley. It should not come as a surprise that this compilation was released even though there are several others available that already showcase the talents of this lovable foursome. There's the 20th Century Masters collection (CD) featuring ABBA which was certified Gold in the US, "The Definitive Collection" (CD and DVD) and the most popular of them all "ABBA GOLD: Greatest Hits" (CD and DVD) which was certified 6 x platinum in the US and has sales of over 25 million world-wide. So what is the point of this new release titled "ABBA Number Ones" which like their previous compilations have been released in both CD and DVD format? The title of one of ABBA's hits comes to mind: "Money, Money, Money". For the millions who already own "GOLD" and "The Definitive Collection" purchasing "Number Ones" would be pointless since they already own these songs. However, for the millions of fans (like myself) "Number Ones" is just another compilation to add to your ever growing collection.

"ABBA: Number Ones" showcases all of the songs that topped the charts internationally (The DVD version includes all the videos to these classic songs and as a bonus, they throw in a live version of "Waterloo", 2 other live performances which were sung to a backing track and a Number One scrapbook which lists all the countries the respective singles topped the charts in, although some of the lists are incomplete since it omits countries several of these songs reached the top). Evidence of ABBA's overwhelming international appeal is that if you were to tally up all of their number ones, you would get a number well over 100. Missing in action however is "Does Your Mother Know" which reached # 1 in Belgium and the Top Ten in several other territories including Canada, "Eagle" which topped the charts in Belgium and "Lay All Your Love on Me" which was a top ten hit in the UK and reached # 1 in the US Hot Dance Club Play Charts in the early 80's.

ABBA's success in North America paled slightly to their massive appeal elsewhere however to state they were not successful in the US and Canada will be an inaccurate statement. In the US, the group had 20 singles reach the Billboard Hot 100 within an 8 year time frame out of which 14 reached the Top 40. They also scored a # 1 hit on the singles chart with "Dancing Queen" (featured here), two # 1 hits in the Billboard Adult Contemporary Charts with "Fernando" and "The Winner Takes It All" (featured here) and a # 1 in the Billboard Dance/Club charts with "Lay All Your Love on Me" (not featured here). In Canada they scored no less than 14 Top Forty hits out of which 8 reached the Top Ten and 6 consecutive Top Ten albums including a # 1 with Greatest Hit: Vol 2.

To the few who have not been exposed to these timeless and immaculate pop gems, "ABBA: Number Ones" may be a good place to start with since it's reasonably priced and offers their biggest hits but keep in mind that "The Definitive Collective" is far more extensive and may be a better buy. For the millions of ABBA fans out there, what can I say since you already own these songs? But knowing the passion this group inspires among their fan-base, I wouldn't be surprised in knowing that when entering your favorite music store, the first thing you do is extend your arm and grab this CD/DVD off the shelf and pay for it at the counter. I can't blame you since I have done exactly that. That is the power of ABBA's music

5 out of 5 stars A Flawless Pick!.......2006-12-05

As noted by previous reviewers, if you own 'Gold' it's time to update!
The new 2005 remasters by Johan Funemyr, DCM are top-notch compared to the 2001 remasters by John Astley with Michael B. Tretow in my opinion. This collection includes all the great hits from around the world, with the exception of 'Ring Ring' (found on the import double CD release). This album would be flawless if they had used the original single version of 'Summer Night City' because the extended part was added using "non-digital" efforts and has a noticeable drop out when the song picks up at the single version.
Drop this CD in and press play. You will NOT be dissapointed! I can only DARE you to try and turn it off!
Oh, and for you Madonna fans...she's quoted in the forward!

Few comebacks in rock and roll history have been as amazing as that of Aerosmith. Their triumphant return to the charts in the '80s not only rekindled the band's earlier success, but also significantly surpassed it. With their top 20 hits "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)," "Ragdoll," and the top 10 power ballad, "Angel," the group proved they had even more fire left in their fight than anyone could have imagined. Leaving behind its reckless lifestyle, the band sacrificed none of their rowdy rock and roll. "Ragdoll" and "Love in an Elevator" built upon Aerosmith's raunchy blues approach to hard rock, complete with singer Steven Tyler's howl in the best form of his career. Big Ones includes these rockers along with the spooky Grammy-winner "Jamie's Got a Gun," and the slower but still hard-edged "Crazy." Other high points of the new and improved band are reflected in "The Other Side" and the anthem "Eat the Rich." --Steve Gdula

4 out of 5 stars Big enough, not the biggest.......2007-05-25

This is a good comp album of Aerosmith's stuff from the mid-80s thru early 90s. It's the stuff people who were kids in the 80s will remember from the radio. Very good album for that age group. The stuff from the 70s isn't here. If that's what you're looking for, you'll have to get a different disc. This disc is good rock and roll.

4 out of 5 stars Great 80's/Early 90's Collection.......2007-05-22

First and foremost, "Big Ones" is not a definitive Aerosmith collection. What it is, however, is a great collection of tunes culled from their second successful run that started in the mid-80's and ran its course through the early 90's. There are bigger, better, and more complete collections of their hits out there, but for a quick roadtrip, this is the perfect album. It includes "Dude (Look Like A Lady)," "Janie's Got A Gun," and "Amazing." It also has the wonderful "Rag Doll" and one of the best hard rock ballads, "Angel." A couple of new tunes are also thrown in, but they can't even begin to overshadow the rest of this album.

Naturally hardcore fans will want a more extensive collection of Aerosmith's hits. In most cases, if you're that much of a fan you've probably got most of their albums anyway. For people who just want a decent helping of the band's hits though, this album is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars A Clasic.......2006-08-07

All the hits in one CD great I invite to all of you Aerosmith fans to buy this album.......enjoy

5 out of 5 stars "Great Ones".......2006-06-07

Thats what this CD should be called! I have had this CD for many years now and I never get tired of it! This album consist mostly of Aerosmith's top singles released up to 1994. I have to admit that I wish that "Walk this Way" was on the album, but what can you do? I enjoy compilation CDs because every song is great! One of my favorite songs is on the album- "Livin' on the Edge", I think that this song is one of those classic s tunes that you can just jam out to while you are driving in your car. Another favorite of mine is "Amazing". Its another classic. I can remember the video so clearly, from when I was like 9 years old and watching MTV with my sisters. I love Aerosmith's sound. I have never heard a voice like Steven Tyler and Joe Perry is an amazing guitarist. I don't think that there is any other band out there that sounds similar to Aerosmith, they are in a genre all on their own. I am amazed at Aerosmith's ability to continue to rock out and continue to put out great music over so many years. I recommend this CD especially to someone that is just discovering Aerosmith, They will be able to hear some of the classics and "oldie but goldies" from them. If you buy this CD I hope you will cherish it for many years, like I have.

3 out of 5 stars so big.......2007-05-21

I thought this cd was not bad, there are some great songs to use with your own kids, but I teach a mommy and me class, and I found this a little too repetitive and slow. Nice for really young ones.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-01-07

I wasn't sure if I should buy this CD because there are no samples available, but I did and it turned out to be a good buy. Hap Palmer sings good songs and has a soothing voice. My daughter is 21 months and likes the CD. My nephew is 5 years and loves the song Rock and Roll Freeze Dance. I recently purchased another Hap Palmer CD and I'm excited to hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Best childrens songs!.......2005-09-08

My children love this cd. During our move recently this cd was misplaced and my children miss the songs. These songs are fun and silly. I even enjoy singing with my kids. The singing is not cheesy or irratating to an adults ears. If you don't have this cd you are missing out on the best cd for children.

5 out of 5 stars so happy hap's here!.......2004-01-18

Hap Palmer's calming voice and catchy lyrics are infectous. Children can easily pick up the fingerplay directions in these songs.
Every song has educational & fun potential. A teacher/parent could use this cd to encourage gross motor skills, listening/following directions, learning body parts, etc, or just plain having a blast!

The titles are of the songs are easily remembered by kids ( I'm a pretzel, Jack in the box...) and soon you'll be fielding requests for their favorites!

Whether you teach or have kids or even babysit this cd is great addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Music for young kids.......2003-04-18

I bought this tape to use with a pre-school class. Sometimes CD's do not meet my expectations. Not true with this one. It is excellent and I use it a lot.

5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2007-06-09

If you want to travel down memory lane, this is a great CD to buy.........great selection of songs...........

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection for the Casual Fan.......2006-08-26

I was a fan of the Bee Gees until "Saturday Night Fever" and the era of disco. For a long time after disco became a footnote in music history I refuse to listen to the Bee Gees because of their association with disco; my mistake. The Bee Gees were one of the most successful and creative pop groups in music history. Even if the Bee Gees were less successful in the United States, they are almost assuredly one of the best selling pop groups in history world wide. This collection has some shortcomings, but it is a great selection of songs for a casual fan. The bonus DVD is an excellent extra that may drive you to get a more comprehensive DVD.

These songs were #1 somewhere in the world. Unfortunately, the booklet included with the CD fails to point out where the songs were #1. Many were not #1 in the United States or the United Kingdom, so I have to wonder whether Djibouti, Nepal, or Costa Rica was the pop hotbed where some songs went to #1. Regardless of where the songs went to #1, every one of these songs is excellent. The only problem may be that there are not enough of them; more on that in a moment.

Because the Bee Gees had hits from the 60s to the 90s, every era of their career is represented by the first eighteen songs on the CD. The 19th song on the CD, "Man in the Middle," is not a number one song, but a tribute to departed brother Maurice Gibb. The song is moving and very well done. I think Maurice Gibb would have been proud of his brothers.

I enjoyed the Bee Gees in the era of songs like "Massachusetts," "I've Gotta Get a Message to You," and "I Started a Joke." When the Bee Gees disappeared and "I Started a Joke" disappeared from radio I kept trying to remember who the group was that sang that song.

Though the Bee Gees had outstanding harmonies and catchy pop riffs in the music in the first portion of their career, it was the catchier beats of the disco era that propelled the Bee Gees into superstardom. Songs like "Jive Talkin'" and "You Should Be Dancing" led to the songs of "Saturday Night Fever." From the end of 1977 into 1978 the Gibb brothers had six songs that went to number one in the United States. Brother Andy Gibb recorded two of the six songs and Yvonne Elliman went to number one with "If I Can't Have You." The Bee Gees followed up with the successful album "Spirits Have Flown," which provided three more number ones to the Bee Gees. However, the fall of disco in 1979 generated a backlash in the United States that propelled the Bee Gees from the limelight to the back stage. Fortunately the brothers continued to chart well in the rest of the world.

Perhaps the real flaw with this collection is depth. The Bee Gees have sold more than 180 million albums world wide. The have more than 20 released albums. Even presuming that the nineteen songs on the CD are number one songs, an incredible number of very good songs remain that hit the top ten, the top twenty or the top forty. There are at least two more comprehensive collections available. There is a two disk greatest hits collection and a boxed set with many more songs available. If you already have most of the Bee Gees music this set only gives you a different set to listen to, in addition to the Maurice Gibb tribute song "Man in the Middle." Of course, the more comprehensive collections also tend to be more expensive.

This particular CD also includes a DVD with five performances. I enjoyed the performances immensely. All five performances are live versions of songs represented on the CD. The five performances represent the Bee Gees from their two most popular periods. While the CD alone could have been more comprehensive, the inclusion of the DVD makes this collection very cost-effective if you are looking for a CD representative of the Bee Gees. I warn you that you may become hooked on the Bee Gees and may want to start collecting more, and more, of their music. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Despite the DVD, this collection falls short of other Bee Gees Compilations.......2006-04-26

If one were to assess musical artists in the Pop music era, one may not be off-base by saying that the Bee Gees are one of the Top 10 acts of all time. The Bee Gees established themselves as pop stars in the late 1960s; reinvented themselves in the 1970s as pioneers for the "Disco Era"; became acclaimed songwriters for some of pop's biggest acts in the 1980s; and then successfully made a comeback in the 1990s. This has allowed the Bee Gees to establish a large body of music work throughout their careers. "Bee Gees: Number Ones" marks the first release following the death of Bee Gee Maurice Gibb. It contains 18 hit singles by the Bee Gees spanning their entire career. While "Number Ones" does a good job at providing a snapshot of the Bee Gees career, it is not the strongest greatest hits collection that is available of their work.

The title of "Number Ones: is misleading. The term "Number Ones" is used loosely. In the liner notes, it says that this collection "contains the best-loved number one singles plus classic songs taken from number one albums". The liner notes also mention that "no other band has scored number ones in each of five decades (the argument can be made the Bee Gees had a #1 single or album in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, but I'm still trying to figure out what the fifth decade is). As for the number one singles or albums, the Bee Gees are referring to anywhere in the world where they scored a #1. An example of this is "You Win Again". "You Win Again" was a commercial flop in the United States, but scored as a number one in Europe. It's clear that the album is stretching things as far as what is a "Number One", but one thing is clear - this album contains plenty of hits.

With greatest hits collections, I prefer the songs to be arranged chronologically on the collection. This allows me to see how the artist has progressed over time. Given the fact that the Bee Gees transformed from a 60s Rock Sound to a Disco sound - and eventually to an adult-contemporary sound - it is critical for any Bee Gees collection to be arranged chronologically. "Number Ones" does a very good job at showing this - all of the songs are ordered chronologically and allow the listener to follow hear the transformations made in their career. The collection does a nice job at introducing "forgotten hits" by the Bee Gees such as ""World", "Words", "I've Gotta Get a Message to You", and "Don't Forget to Remember".

As with many greatest hits collections, this one includes a "new song". In this case the "new song" is a moving tribute to the late Maurice Gibb entitled "Man in the Middle". For the most part this song continues the adult-contemporary sound started by the Bee Gees in the 1990s.

Overall there are no problems with the musical content of "Number Ones". However, "Number Ones" falls short when considering this greatest hits collection against several other significant greatest hits collections by the Bee Gees:

"Best of the Bee Gees" is a greatest hits album that covers the early material of the Bee Gees from the 1960s. The songs from this era "Massachusetts", "World", "Words", and "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" are all included here. This album also contains "To Love Somebody" and "New York Mining Disaster" - not included on "Number Ones".

"Best of the Bee Gees Vol. 2" is a follow-on greatest hits album that focuses on the Bee Gees material in the early 1970s - prior to the release of "Main Course" which would mark their transformation into the Disco-based pioneers. Included songs are: "Lonely Days", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", and "Don't Forget to Remember".

"Bee Gees Greatest": This collection focuses on the Bee Gees material from their "peak period" - 1975 through 1979. All of the songs from "Number Ones" from this time frame are on this CD.

"The Very Best of the Bee Gees" is a mid 90s greatest hits collection with some overlap to "Number Ones". It contains 21 tracks and includes the newer song "Ordinary Lives". It also includes "New York Mining Disaster", "First of May", "Saved by the Bell", "Run to Me", "Nights on Broadway", and "More than a Woman" - all not included on "Number Ones". Songs like "I've Started a Joke", "Lonely Days", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", "Love So Right", and "Love You Inside Out" are not included on this collection.

"Love Songs" is a greatest hits collection by the Bee Gees focused on ballads and songs with a theme of love.

"The Bee Gees: Their Greatest Hits" is a two disc collection. It is a comprehensive collection that contains every song on "Number Ones" with the exception of the Maurice Gibb tribute.

"Tales From the Brothers Gibb" is the most comprehensive Bee Gees collection out there. It is a four CD boxed set collection. All songs from "Number Ones" are included on this collection with the exception of the Maurice Gibb tribute.

This edition of "Number Ones" contains a bonus DVD featuring five songs performed on a television show. These songs clearly don't have the intensity of many of the live performances the Bee Gees have - namely "One Night Only". However if you are a Bee Gees fan, you may appreciate these videos.

Based on more focused and comprehensive greatest hits offerings available, "Number Ones" really doesn't stand up with many of the other Bee Gees collections out there. In addition, I didn't feel the DVD video added much making this collection worthwhile. Unless you are a fan and/or want the Maurice Gibb tribute song, my advice would be to try to get the two-disc "The Bee Gees: Their Greatest Hits" instead of this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Too Many #1 Hits Already!.......2005-12-21

Not to be excluded from the list of other artists that have released compilations containing only #1 songs, the Bee Gees have no worries. Although some of the hits didn't actually make #1 in the UK or the USA, some may have been #1 in several other countries, prompting it to be thankfully included here. "Number Ones" features 19-tracks, adding cuts such as the country flavored "Don't Forget To Remember" (#34 in USA/#2 in UK) and the immortal "Words" (#15 USA/#8 UK). Although the Bee Gees never had these few songs at #1, other artists have consistently placed these songs at the top of the charts.

The last song is 2001's "Man in the Middle," a polite MOR rocker that is included as a tribute to the late Maurice Gibb. An 'after the fact' trivia is that this song actually went to #2 in Turkey after this album was released!

If you buy this early, you'll get the limited-edition CD/DVD combo which includes rare footage of the Bee Gees performing "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," "How Deep Is Your Love," "Jive Talkin'," "Massachusetts" and "I Started a Joke" (from the U.K. TV show "An Audience With").

Trivia: Dozens of songs went to #1 in Holland, Germany and Italy and elsewhere. Here are some well-known and rare Gibb songs that have made it to #1.

"Spicks & Specks" (Australia)
"My World" (Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore)
"Run To Me" (Hong Kong, Singapore)
"Saw A New Morning" (Hong Kong)
"Wouldn't I Be Someone" (Hong Kong)
"Love So Right" (Brazil)

The songlist goes on and on and will continue to be the legacy of three brothers from Manchester, England.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD!.......2005-06-10

I was lucky enought to stumble on this CD and WOW it is fantastic. I'd forgotten what great songs the BeeGees put out. My teen years floated though my mind as I enjoyed listening to these songs over and over. I especially enjoyed "Man in the Middle" the tribute to brother Maurice Gibb. Great album!
