The 23-year-old Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira has become an international star thanks to her rich, emotive voice and thoughtful songs. Her albums Pies Descalzos and Dónde Están Los Ladrones? are platinum in the U.S.; now, as something of a taster before the release of an English-language disc, comes this recording of an acoustic performance for MTV. Shakira's songs translate well to the format; in some ways Unplugged is her most muscular music yet. The opening "Octava Dia" gains punch from its dramatic arrangement, while the elements of traditional music in "Ciega, Sordomuda" are applied with wit and charm. Fans of Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morissette who haven't caught on to Shakira yet are in for a pleasant surprise when they hear this. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars God created man but now its the 8th day..........2006-10-07

Im so Passionate about this album. I have such respect and love for the album that its hard to even begin putting things together for this review. The funny thing is that i had listened to Pies descalzos (Shakira's 1st "real" debut album) as a teenager and grew to love the songs it offered. I will never forget the day my sister brought this "Mtv Unplugged" home after a friend from her work allowed her to borrow it. My sister simply dismissed the album as something "out of her taste." I however picked up the album and gave it a listen. I must say that at first, i wasn't listening to all the songs besides Ojos Asi, Donde Estan los Ladrones, and Ciega Sordomuda. "up-tempo beats" I wasn't interested in the ballads so i would instantly skip right threw them. It wasn't until tragedy struck my life that i found myself listening to all the songs coming off the album. I was blown away by the beauty, the raw emotion and energy the Songs fed my aching soul. I was in a very unhappy time in my life and nothing ever made me happy. As odd or even creepy as this may sound, the only thing that helped me forget about the worries and misfortanes of life was this album, "MTV Unplugged: Shakira"

The songs mainly speak of love, hardships and betrayal but some of the songs also indulge into give-and-take politicaly-themed articulation. Octavo dia is my favorite song ever and i can say that with sincerity since it talks about issues pertaining to everyday life. We all question authority, we question the truth, even our beliefs. The song questions simple matters of life like the eighth day (biblical day: after creation)
"god said everythings ok now, so its time for me to rest" Then Shakira asks "who would have imagined that when god would return (apacolypse), he would find everything in a infernal mess... and that god himself would become another unemployed being in a society filled with an already disalarming unemployment rate." This song opened up my eyes! This song can be interpreted in many ways. Its clear that she means that god created Man and then let these creatures he created map-out mans'own fate.

-"Now god will be another unemployed man apon the already disalarming unemployment rate going on in society." (Metaphorically speaking, when Apacolypse comes, god will have no work left!..{just brilliant.. sad but true... or will god have more work after apacolypse.. being that he will have to rebuild a new "Earth"?? hmm..??})

Since then, there have been people who have seen him, only on the streets, transiting. He's patiently waiting for someone to at least converse with him. (Society has forgotten about God!)

Meanwhile this world continues to revolve without no one stopping it! And here below, some people manipulate us like stringed puppets! Im not the kind of idiot that lets anyone convince me! But i do speak the truth, even a blind man can see!

if its for a lack of occupation or of excessive solitude, that god wouldn't resist any longer and just gave up and marched elsewhere, then it would just be our misfortaned fate, then there's no remedy but to adore Michael Jackson, Bill Clinton or Tarzan (social conformity)

Its more dificult to be king without a crown than a person, more ordinary. Poor god, he doesnt show in Magazines, Or is a model or artist or of an ordinary family. celebrity obsessed culture! (The world was once a god {whatever your religion may be} obsessed society.)

Meanwhile this world continues to revolve without no one stopping it! And here below, some people manipulate us like stringed puppets! Im not the kind of idiot that lets anyone convince me! But i do speak the truth, even a blind man can see!

5 out of 5 stars cant believe some people give this 1 star.......2005-06-14

this was even included on Rolling Stones as one of the best performances by a female ever....and yes its in spanish!
This is next to Donde estan los ladrones? and Fijacion Oral when it comes to best Shakira CD
She even won a Grammy for this.

3 out of 5 stars Not Her Best.......2005-04-05

I am a huge fan of Shakira, but I have to say this album isn't her greatest by far. The only songs on here that sound good are Octavo Dia,Moscas en la casa,Donde estan los ladrones,No creo and Ojos asi. The majority of the other songs aren't sung very well, and are somewhat incoherent because of backup singers and Shakiras weird way of singing on this album, like in Estoy Aqui on this album.

5 out of 5 stars This is NOT a copy.......2005-03-06

Those saying that this is a copy of DELD are wrong. This is the best of Shakira's songs at the time of making. The purpose of this CD was not to produce a greatest hits album, but to show Shakira's varied style of singing and songwriting.

I found a lot of these songs to be an improvement on the studio versions (espically the slow numbers).

Buy this if you liked Shakira on tour, or want to hear some variety in style. Here's a little tip; the more you listen to it the more it grows on you

1 out of 5 stars Terrible. The worst unplugged ever........2005-02-26

I don't know what happened with this production. It could have been very good but the result was a complete mistake.
Ok I know that all her fans are going to be ungry and say that this review is not good at all but come on, let's face it. She sings 11 song. 10 of this song are from her album "Donde estan los ladrones" and the other one is from "Pies descalzos". What?, who can understand this when "Pies descalzos" gave her the oportunity to be where she is and brought her several hits (some of them bigger than the ones from "Donde estas los ladrones"). Also there are no new songs (every unplugged has new songs or at least covers, here NOTHING). The cd only has 11 songs, every unplugged has more than that. So do you think that this is a good production?.

I can't believe no one reviewed this CD. I LOVE this album, and I think people should listen to it, so they can write a review! All the songs on here are awesome, especially No Creo, Octavio Dia, and Tu. They sound so much better live, you have to listen to this album!
