    5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

5 out of 5 stars Good Live Cd.......2006-07-06

The Cd/dvd is really really good. One of the few artist that sounds good live. The Glory ones were really really good too.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Don is the First..........2005-08-06

I'm a mexican newley invloved in regaeeton movement. I'm amazed about the things that this fully talented boricua can do. He is the next latin phenomenon, as Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin, Ruben Blades, but better and just in one. UN PALO!!! If this album doesn't like you, don't buy music again....

    5 out of 5 stars Great beat~!.......2004-09-05

I try to avoid live CDs because of the difference in sound in general. But this CD is just so good! Yea, there is trumpets and congos mixed with the boom of the base, but it doesn't make it pop-ish, more like reggaeton mixed with salsa (If you haven't noticed already, some of his songs are reggae/bachata or reggae/balada) This is what makes Don Omar unique and more enjoyable to listen to. What I love the most is that it comes with 2 CDs, the first one comes with 14 songs and the second with 11. I noticed that the last 3 songs (or 2?) aren't live. There's also some orchestral intruments played if you pay more attention (11th song in the 2nd CD, Carta a Un Amigo, is very noticeable ~ very beautiful) Overall, I'm very happy to obtain this cd, makes you want to get up and dance with the ongoing great beats! A must for most reggaeton fans who enjoy beats different from your average base rocking reggaeton songs and don't mind listening to crowd cheering nor quick chats or presentation of musicians (With all that, it kind of makes you feel as if you were in his concert)

    5 out of 5 stars Tremendo Concierto..........2004-07-31

Hi this CD is a concert CD and you will hear the crowd in the background, what do you expect from a live concert, It's a compilation of old songs and a few new, with a live band not with a DJ , this reggaethon is not your typical bad word spanish reggae, Don Omar and Hector y TIto are trying to get away from that, but they still do on some concert around P.R.. He also sings salsa and and improvise in some of his songs. Remember reggathon is a variety of music mix including beats from hip hop, reggae, etc... it doesnt have to be the BOOM BASE! explosive sound coming from your speakers all the time...Get the DVD if you can...its great..

          Customer Reviews:

          3 out of 5 stars Three-and-a-half stars ... All-around good but not essential.......2003-03-02

I'm a big admirer of Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink. I think he is among the most consistent maestros today. But while this treasury of live performances, recorded for broadcast, is very fine, there's surprisingly little in here that's indispensible. It's all uniformly "good," but I don't think this would make it to my desert isle.

One of the interesting thing this set shows is that the Concertgebouw Orchestra and Haitink are a bit rougher in person than in the studio. (An English Horn solo in the Ravel Concerto was particularly gruff.) Some highlights: a soulful, dedicated Mozart 27th Piano Concerto with Clifford Curzon; a martial, mercurial Mahler 6th that, for some reason, still doesn't convince me; same with a DSCH 10th, which lacks gravity and is too fleeting at times, especially in the scherzo; a superb Stravinsky Threni; a wonderfully colored and cohesive Prokofiev 5th Concerto with Ashkenazy, and a very fine, well-organized Bruckner 7th that only lacks a scherzo with enough portent and bite. Some of the disappointments: a Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1 with Oistrakh where Haitink never really sounds idiomatic, though Oistrakh is superb; a good-but-not-great Bartok Second Violin Concerto with Stern; the aforementioned Ravel Concerto, where the soloist, Daniel Wayenberg, is excellent but where support is sloppy in spots.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the set, though, is the range of music presented here. Perhaps they did it on purpose, but the collection emphasizes music we don't normally associate with Haitink, such as much music by the Second Viennese School. He conducts it well, but Boulez and Bernstein do it better. Again, very good, but nothing definitive. I've heard Haitink in some really fine recordings and performances, but these, while certainly good, are not quite the cream of the cream. And there's so much great Haitink already out there that this set finds itself competing with other recordings by the same maestro. However, there is also a lot of unusual repertoire here, a strong selling point.

          4 out of 5 stars Really a wonderful collection - & well recorded performances.......2002-04-27

You might laugh, but I bought this to get a recording of Stravinsky's "Threni". It does have a whole disk dedicated to performances of various Stravinsky works and it is a very nice disk. But there are 13 MORE disks full of really choice LIVE performances! I am a fan of live music and recorded live music is the next best thing.

Go ahead and just carefully look at the range and variety of music and musicians offered here and you will quickly realize as I did (after I bought it) what a wonderful collection this is.

I know it will take some waiting to get this collection, and it isn't cheap, but it is very much worth the bother and the price.
