Since the release of 1996's dance-oriented Planeta Paulina, Paulina Rubio has switched labels, refocused her musical energy, and emerged with a palette of sounds and styles that makes Paulina her most diverse and mature album yet. With the help of Colombian producer and songwriter Estefano, Rubio has taken the rock, pop, and dance influences heard on previous albums and blended them effortlessly on this collection, her fourth. The first single, "Lo Hare Por Ti," rides an infectious guitar hook, while "Yo Sigo Aqui" and "Sexi Dance" showcase pulsing club rhythms. Rubio even dabbles in Go-Go's-flavored pop ("Sin Aire") and interprets one of the great Juan Gabriel's polished ballads ("Cancun y Yo"). The album's shining moment, though, is "El Ultimo Adios," which bleeds electric guitars and a lilting pop beat into a traditional mariachi arrangement. Forget Ricky and Jennifer--Paulina is Latin pop for the new millennium. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT ALBUM--EVEN BETTER NOW with video extras and BONUS tracks!.......2007-06-04

Ananda has been made even better with the addition of a DVD and several bonus tracks!

The DVD contains TWO videos, an interesting interview (with available ENGLISH subtitles for those of us who's ears can't quite keep up with the spoken Spanish), and several "behind the scenes" 3-4 minute vignettes. Most interesting of these is the "En Malaga, Espana" pre-concert look. That one actually runs slightly longer, approaching ten minutes.

ME SIENTO MUCHO MAS FUERTE SIN TU AMOR is well done and interesting. The NI UNA SOLA PALABRA "Belanova" remix is enjoyable, but the other two bonus tracks, while they may appeal to "tradional" Mexican music fans, didn't really add much to the tracks (in my humble opinion!).

As for the album as a whole, see my review of Ananda Limited Edition (w/poster!). No longer available, so I guess it really was "limited"! Anyways, having lived with that CD for the last 8 months I'd only have to say it GROWS on you and I'd that I like it MORE now than I did at first. I've yet to tire of listening to it. In my prior review I said I thought it wasn't quite as good as Pau-Latina, but now I'd say it IS as good or maybe even better! I'd also say that MIENTEME UNA VEZ MAS is, next to NI UNA SOLA PALABRA, the BEST track on the album and SHOULD be a single. Personally, I think it would have been a much better follow-up single than NADA PUEDE CAMBIARME as it is a much stronger effort and overall composition. Kind of reminds me of "Everytime I Think of You" by the BABYS (Anthology)--not lyrically, but music style wise. Slow, quiet start, but loud and fast later! A high quality track.

All in all, the CD/DVD combo is worth the slight price premium above the standard ANANDA CD. Tri-fold cardstock/plastic double disc case with sleeve for lyric booklet, which is now updated to include lyrics for ME SIENTO MUCHO MAS FUERTE SIN TU AMOR. Two full panel photos of Pau that don't appear in the standard single disc case. For an interesting comparison of Paulina Rubio videos through the years, check out La Historia.

5 out of 5 stars Great deal........2007-04-08

I think that it was a good idea to release an enhanced version of ANANDA. The orginal cd is very good but it doesn't include all the extras of this version. On this deluxe version you can find:
1-Music videos ("NI UNA SOLA PALABRA" and "NADA PUEDE CAMBIARME")
2-An interview with Paulina (it's not long, it takes around 10 minutes but it's fun).
3-Behind the scenes footage. This is divided in two parts. The first part is about behind the scenes of both the music videos on the DVD that aren't special because are really short and Paulina barely comments about them and the director doesn't make any comment either. And the sencond part which is about a rehearsal prior a show in Malaga, Spain.
I say that this is a great deal because for an extra bucks you will get the DVD with this features plus on the cd you'll get a bonus track that doesn't appear on the original version of "ANANDA" which is "ME SIENTO MUCHO MAS FUERTE SIN TU AMOR" and two new versions of "NI UNA SOLA PALABRA" and a new extra version of "NADA PUEDE CAMBIARME".
If you like Paulina and you have this album on the simple version, you'll like it because of the 2 videos which are the strings to pull this deluxe version. And if you are willing to buy "ANANDA" because you wanted to have it, well I can say that this is a very good album that follows Paulina's style of mixing several types of music including Pop, Rock, Ranchera, Flamenco influences between others. The first single "NI UNA SOLA PALABRA" became an instant huge hit all over Latin America, Spain and even countries such as Italy where it made a big impression. Between the producers you can find Cachorro Lopez one of the most important producers in the latin market and C. "Tricky" Stewart who produces of singers such as Madonna or Britney Spears. Juanes and Julieta Venagas wrote songs for Paulina, on the lead guitar of "NADA PUEDE CAMBIARME" Paulina had Guns n' Roses's lead guitarist Slash.
This album also sold up to 500,000 copies on its release week and topped almost every latin album chart. Well this are only commercial facts. The album perse is very good. Check "NADA PUEDE CAMBIARME", "N.O", "AYUDAME", "RETRATO" and "MIENTEME UNA VEZ MAS".

NUEVAS VERSIONES EN "PASITO DURANGUENSE" (QUIZA PARA ADELANTARSE A LOS CANTANTES DE ESTE TIPO DE MUSICA QUE HACEN COVERS DE CANCIONES QUE YA HAN SIDO EXITO EN VERSIONES POP). INCLUYE UNA BUENA VERSION DE "ME SIENTO MUCHO MAS FUERTE SIN TU AMOR" DE CHARLY GARCIA. EN FIN, SI EL CD EN SU PRIMERA EDICION ERA BUENO, AHORA ESTA MUCHO MEJOR, Y SI LES GUSTA PAULINA RUBIO, PUES ADQUIERANLO.

Shakira may have been the first Latina to don the contemporary crossover crown, but Mexican golden girl Paulina Rubio's first English-language effort outshines the pop competition in any language. Border Girl follows Rubio's spectacularly successful Paulina, the No. 1 Latin album of 2001. Like that collection, Border Girl blends terrific hooks, sing-along choruses, seductive rhythms, and lots of energy--essential elements for any great pop album. "Don't Say Goodbye," the hypnotic first single, is a good introduction for American audiences, and Rubio even pulls off a sly cover of the Kiss hit "I Was Made for Lovin' You." Even better are the glittering girl-power anthems translated from Spanish to English, including "Not That Kind of Girl," the pulsing club gem "Sexual Lover," and "The Last Goodbye," an innovative, I-will-survive testimonial that blends ranchera and hip-hop instrumentation. Border music has never sounded so savvy--or sensational. --Joey Guerra

Although I do not speak spanish but this album is very good and entertaining, and also a great club music too. Try it and see

2 out of 5 stars Is this the same person who gave us "Pau-latina"?.......2005-12-13

OK - She's beautiful, she's exciting, she's sexy, and her music is dance-worthy. However, this album pales in comparison to Pau-latina.

If you don't have Pau-latina, you definitely want that one first. IF you do, then go back and get "Paulina" and buy "Todo Mi Amor" and skip buying this whole album. Does Paulina deserve to be a major U.S. star? Absolutamente, pero no con este album. Because she doesn't have the strongest voice (sexy and distinct, but not like a Jennifer Peña or a Laura Pausini), she needs the best production quality and she can lure the English-speaking market because ella es tan caliente.

5 out of 5 stars Worth a Great Deal More Praise Than It Received.......2005-09-07

Although it was only a minor hit album, Paulina Rubio's "Border Girl," which would debut and peak at #11 on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart and ultimately sell just north of 600,000 copies in the US, is a bonafide pop music dream. The disc is overstuffed from beginning to end with sing-a-long choruses that are simply unshakeable, while maintaining splendid production throughout that doesn't obscure Rubio's vocals or unique appeal, but instead helps the singer and her Latin roots shine in the sunlight.

Although the first track and lead single "Don't Say Goodbye" only peaked at #41 on the Billboard Hot 100, it is nevertheless an urgent, pulsing club jam that Rubio delivers splendidly. The sharp video for the track, which was shot at an infamous $1,000,000 budget, is also candy for the eyes. The only problems with the track are the gloom it creates - it is, after all, about broken love - and its Euro-pop styled production, which both combined to make it an unfavorable choice for a summer single.

A much better choice for the lead single would have been "I'll Be Right Here (Sexual Lover)." An English translation of 2001's major hit "Y Yo Sigo Aqui (And I Continue Here)," which happens to be recycled at the end of "Border Girl," has instantly palatable lyrics and a catchy, summer-ready groove that does not let go of the listener, and long after the song has ended. The epitome of irresistible, if it had been the lead single "Border Girl" would have had much better chances of success. "Casanova," which contains other optimal lead single ingredients; sizzling percussion, blaring Latin horns and eyebrow-raising lyrics, also would have yielded the same results.

"Dark sexy skin, my passion begins/You're the center of my obsession/Watching you dance in your leather pants/My eyes see a true perfection/And I'm hypnotized by the rhythm of your hips/It's so hard to hide and I can't resist."

Further along, there is the monumental confection that is "The Last Goodbye." A perfect, completely kick-ass track that settles into a fine mid-tempo groove, the track blends hip-hop and ranchera sounds flawlessly; something that has not been otherwise done in pop music. The track is an adaptation of her 2000 single "El Ultimo Adios," which was a worldwide hit.

Rubio truly shines on "The One You Love," which was the set's second single. A true head-scratcher that it only peaked at #97 on Billboard's Hot 100, the track has an irrepressible chorus, sparkling Spanish guitars and is the epitome of a perfect mid-tempo pop single. The funky "Stereo," featuring an excellent guest appearance by rapper Chilly Willy, already sounds dated for being only 3 years old, but is still an extremely entertaining listen with its quirky lyrics and frothy, trance-like production.

"Don't wanna be too bizarre/But you're the key to my car/You're my electric guitar/Sounds like it's ringing on the stereo/It's very clear to me, just like it's in 3D/Total telepathy/Sounds like it's ringing on the stereo/I'm bouncing off the wall/The way you turn me on/I think I like this song/Sounds like it's ringing on the stereo."

Also, "Fire" is a fast-paced club jam that pleads to be your companion on dancefloors and treadmills. With Rubio's vocals soaring high and incessant production, including intermittence of her heavy breathing, this adaptation-gone-wild of her 2001 single "Sexi Dance" is made to raise heart rates as well as entertain.

The most shining track on the disc, however, is the underrated title track. An edgy, slow-danceable ballad, the lyrics are superb, and Rubio's performance is full of passion and sincerity.

"I am a border girl/Crossing oceans in the name of love/And I have been searching for this all of my life/My heart knows when it's wrong and when it's right."

The rest of the English tracks include her sex-kitten cover of Kiss' "I Was Made For Lovin' You," "Undeniable," a quiet ballad, and "Not that Kind of Girl," a high-energy girl-power anthem in the vain of Destiny's Child that is an adaptation of her 2001 smash "Yo No Soy Esa Mujer."

The disc switches over into Spanish in its latter half. "Si Tu Te Vas," "Todo Mi Amor" and "Baila Casanova" are counterparts for "Don't Say Goodbye," "The One You Love" and "Casanova" respectively. Although the lyrics falter a bit in the translation, which is par for the course, her vocals only pick up momentum. Last but not least is "Libre (Free)," another well-executed Latin pride anthem tailor made for dancefloors.

Overall, "Border Girl" is the essence of what pop music should be, especially with Latin flourishes. Although she was robbed of the success that she deserved with this album, Rubio still greatly outsold her arch rival Thalia's English-language debut, and most appropriately.

Those who have passed over this album should give it another chance.

This have got to be my favorite Paulina Rubio album! The best ones are Don't Say Goodbye, Stereo, Sexual Lover, The One that you Love, Libre, The Last Goodbye, Cassanova, Fire(Sexy Dance), I Was Made for Lovin' U, and the spanish versions of her first three singles. This album reflects techno, dance pop with hip hop beats. As soon as I heard Don't Say Goodbye, I knew I had to hear the songs on this album.

It's been more than a decade since Paulina Rubio left her golden-girl image at EMI Latin for a more liberating run at Universal Musica. But her former label continues to mine Rubio's catalog for hits packages, rehashes and rarities. Most of the recent releases have been forgettable repeats, but Paulina Remixes assembles an impressive collection of often-impossible-to-find versions of Rubio's early hits. "Te Daria Mi Vida," "Nada de Ti" and "Siempre Tuya Desde la Raiz" still sparkle in their dance-floor dress; and the Mijangos remixes of "Enamorada" (featured here in the English-language "I'm So in Love" version) remains a deliciously dramatic glitterball high. Paulina Remixes even includes amped-up mixes of "El Me Engano," "Sabor a Miel" and "Asunto de Dos"--unlikely choices that benefitted from a DJ's touch. Musically, Rubio may be long past these sparkly gems, but they remain essential for fans and club-bunnies alike. --Joey Guerra

Even though these are remixes, I'm disappointed with the songs on this CD - they're the same group of songs on all of her "greatest hits" CDs. I would have liked some remixes of songs from the Border Girl, Pau-latina, and Ananda albums.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have .......2007-01-17

If you are a vintage fan of Paulina, this must be by all means part of your collection. I hate to give my money to EMI but I like to go back in time with Paulina's hit remixed. I love SOLO POR TI.

Ok, I'll first start off by saying that I have a very limited spanish vocabulary, but the music, vocals, and beats are amazing! I listen to this cd when I'm designing and it's the perfect cd to listen to as you come home from work! I origianlly bought this off iTunes, amazed that they had it, but failed to back up my purchased music! The only cd I was really longing to get was this one! So instead of buying online, I held out for the real deal, and went with amazon.com. Truly amazing! Oh, their second is good, but not as perfect in arrangment as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Una belleza de paraisos electronicos y delicia del pop!.......2006-10-31

5 out of 5 stars she is hot.......2007-03-20

Hey i just reveiwed "paulina" and seeing as how i have nothing better to do i am doing a song by song for this one too!

T1-Holy crap this is the weirdest song ever, dance beat, the chorus is insane it gives me a funny feeling as it sounds slightly off somehow, which what i love about-10/10

T2-I love the vocals in this song especially at the end of each line in the verse, listen to that slight echo in the far right and left, dance beat, the chorus is so fun and i love the harmonies at the ending chorus-10/10

T3-Moving right along, cool intro, fast beat again, doesn't have the oddness of the last two songs but super catchy-9/10

T4-Slower hip/hoppish beat and guitar riff, i like how the strums start and stops, it took a few listens to hook me but it did-9/10

T5-Damn the flow stopped for me, who is that guy in the chorus i dont like that guy or the way it sounds like shes "crying" the vocals out in the chorus, dont like the horns either, its not that bad though but for me its like track 2 in "paulina"-5/10

T6-Fun reggaton song, as far as reggaton songs go this is great, they might be mocking reggaton by singing about dogs haha, very catchy, especially the second verse, i love the little dog barks and the vocal notes in the bridge-9/10

T7-Mod dance beat, i dont mind the guy or the horns as much in this one, its good, i love the line she sings after the chorus especially when she rolls the rr the second time, so hot-9/10

T8-Slower ballad style song, very nice and pretty-9/10

T9-Mod Rock Beat, Fun song, super catchy chorus as usual, i love the bass in the bridge it really makes it happen-9/10

T10-Is there a catchy music machine in the studio? catchy into/chorus, cool guitar riff in the verse, mod beat, again this chorus is so damn catchy-9/10

T11-Slower song again, very pretty, nice chord changes, i like how the notes sustain in the chorus-9/10

T12-Back to Mod Rock, nice guitar solo in bridge, catchy when it's good i don't have much to say-9/10

T13-Ha, don't like the horn in the prechorus, other than that another catchy song, i understand this was a hit? i don't know it's not my favorite but it's pretty good-7/10

T14-I always skip it and listen to T1-0/10

I love the varitey of music on here, but I would like one whole album of songs like T1 or all dance but dance with spice in it. That doesn't take away at all from the slow songs just depends on the mood.

5 out of 5 stars formula that works.......2006-10-07

my ex boyfriend gave me this cd as a gift and at first i never listened to it. It wasn't until we broke up that i started listening to it! I fell in love with it! (memories) Every song seemed as if it was reading my mind. Alot of the songs are about memories, "te quiese tanto" or "dame otra tequila para olvidarte de tu amor" Cleary about relationships and the ups and downs that come with them. I just love this album, Paulina always delivers. The only think i dont like is how she always plays it safe. She never innovates but sticks with whats safe..i would like her to explore other routes even if the outcome isn't rewarding. It as if i have come to expect poppy fun music from her and nothing les or more. Maybe thats what i like about her.. i like how the music bring you up and in end thats what music is designed for.... to play with your senses!

    3 out of 5 stars Fun, Harmless.......2006-09-14

Maybe it's a musical snobbiness on my part, but I couldn't give this CD five stars. I feel I'd be ripping off all these classic CDs I've reviewed on here. I mean, I liked it. It was fun, harmless, with good beats, and hummable melodies. But at the same time it's so decadent and so foolish, the formula is tried, the songs uneven (even though I have frequently listened to it all the way through), and finally Paulina's voice sucks. But it's cool. The studio saves these shortcomings and it just comes across as a very silly, yet very addicting record, kinda like junk food. Listen to "My Friend, Mi Amigo," for example; the lyrics make you cringe as you sing along to them, but the fact of the matter is that you're singing along to them! And I'm talking about a lot of people I know.

Paulina is not exactly an artist of quality, but you can kind of tell that she was trying to make a really good pop record (she succeeded for the most part) with her 2000 album PAULINA, which made her the international Spanish pop star that she is today and that album rose above all the other ones that year. Then again, she attempted a crossover with 2002's BORDER GIRL, which is one of the worst pieces of junk that I have ever listened to.

Chances are if you like Spanish pop, you will like PAU-LATINA. And chances are if you like Spanish pop, you will already be familiar with it, or at least the single "Te Quise Tanto," which used to get played on the radio every ten minutes for a year.

    5 out of 5 stars Innovation!!! .......2006-03-30

I'm not a fan of Paulina's voice,That is obvious:she doesn't have voice to sing, but this cd is rarely spectacular. All songs are very different,"my friend my amigo" is the most relevant in this cd.With new sounds,Paulina caught me again. This cd is highly recommendable, because the music is good enough. The cover is very nice and she looks very femenine.

5 out of 5 stars Paulina is back in pink........2007-03-01

It took Paulina a while to release a new cd but I think that it was worth the wait. This versatile singer comes back with "ANANDA" that follows her big success of "PAU-LATINA" in the sense of music fusions and sevaral types of music but this time I feel that Paulina has leaned more on rock music instead of her famous rancheras with a touch of hip-hop. Electric guitars are strongly present on tracks such as "NADA PUEDE CAMBIARME" that has Gun's n' Roses's Slash on lead guitar. This song is one of the highlights of the album. In the case of "MIENTEME UNA VEZ MAS" Paulina follows the direction of Evanescence, this song has the very same style of their music and sounds very good with Paulina's voice.
Even though Paulina has concentrated more on rock, I also feel that she wanted to release something for everybody. But this is easy to understand because of group of people that she has chosen for this production. She has the style of Coti with the Ballad "AYUDAME". A mix between Coti and Julieta Venegas on "QUE ME VOY A QUEDAR" which is a catchy song but honestly the lyrics have no sense. She also had Junes as songwriter on "NO TE CAMBIO" this song is really good because it starts the first verse with flamenco and then starts a very nice combination between a very soft reggaeton, a bit of ballenato, pop and hip-hop a real gem for the album. The song that has the biggest ranchera style on the album is "AUNQUE NO SEA CONMIGO" but doesn't have a strong influence as "DAME OTRO TEQUILA" or "EL ULTIMO ADIOS".
"ANANDA" also has pop songs like "RETRATO", "N.O" and the first single "NI UNA SOLA PALABRA" written by Xabi San Martin from Spain's La Oreja De Van Gogh. Comparing this album with her previous one "PAU-LATINA"...well I think that "ANANDA" is very good I really enjoy it but "PAU-LATINA" was more solid, maybe I think this because I heard it more and I got more used to it. The one thing I wanted not to find again is the interludes after each song, they're really short but unnecessary. A positive thing about this production, is the booklet because it has several pictures and lyrics.

To finish this review I think that even though the critics for this album were not very positive. I think that it's a very good step for Paulina. The first single became a #1 hit in the U.S for several weeks and #2 in the main chart of all Latin America and gave Paulina her third entrance on Billboard's Hot 100 with a song that wasn't in English. The album debuted at #1 in the U.S on Top Latin Albums list and #25 on Billboard's 200 and became #1 also in several territories and sold up to 500,000 copies on its release week. Anyway, this is just commercial information but I think that the album is good maybe not her best but good, you won't be sorry with it if you like her music.

5 out of 5 stars Fantástico Álbum de mi Cantante Favorita!.......2006-10-22

5 out of 5 stars Paulina is back with the best album of her ascending career.......2006-10-22

Yes, the Queen of Pop Latino is back with most mature album of her career. "MIENTEME UNA VEZ MAS" stands out to show Paulina's voice. NI UNA SOLA PALABRA is a great cut and so are NADA PUEDE CAMBIARME, AUNQUE NO SEA CONMIGO, SIN FINAL, TU RETRATO...

This album is a must have!

    5 out of 5 stars fun music.......2007-03-20

I started with ananda and am doing some backtracking, the fun thing is there is a lot of variety, here is my song by song breakdown
T1-Catchy vocals in the chorus and at the end of the lalalala part, not slow but not fast-9/10
T2-More horns in this once, which i don't like, has more of a traditional sound, i also don't like the sliding bass in the chorus or the guy singing in the background, i also dont like the scream/whine thing after the chrous, other that it's not that bad, tolerable-5/10
T3-Slow but very nice, love the bass, nice chorus very relaxing song-9/10
T4-Dance song, very fun upbeat and catchy, i normally don't like vocal alterations but they're cool in this one-9/10
T5-Faster again, real hyper and active, the prechorus is a mile a minute, cool-9/10
T6-Slowing down again, the lead guitar is pretty, sounds kind of like satriani, nice chord changes, very well done-9/10
T7-Dance again, sexy vocals for sexi dance, very catchy-9/10
T8-Back to a mod pace, again a nice song, who's the guitarist he's got good style?-9/10
T9-Santana like intro, Catchy open chorus with the harmonies, cool chord changes in the verse, mod pace-9/10
T10-Everyhting about this song sounds so happy, the twangy guitar in the intro, the bass line especialy halfway through the verse cool!, the chorus is super catchy-9/10
T11-Dancing Again, gloria estefan like with the beat and horns, very fun song-9/10
T12-Wow they saved the best for last, for sure, buy the album just for this one-10/10

Fun album because of the variety, it doesnt fit into any category so if you wanted all dance you should combine them from other albums.

    5 out of 5 stars Vive Paulina!.......2006-09-30

5 out of 5 stars Wow. A great cd @}->---.......2006-09-15

My third Paulina cd and I love it as much as Border Girl and La Historia. This is a eclectic mix of dance, ballad and techno style music to name a few. It's always got that fantastic latin pop flavour and that makes for a great cd that I still listen to today. It's her fourth cd and the first that she did with Universal. I think it's her best.
While I'm not normally a fan of techno, I do like Sexi Dance. It's such a great dance song and good for clubbing. I love the beautiful ballad Tal Vez, Quiza and the catchy and infectious Vive el Verano. There is a lot of variety on this cd and I guess that's why I like it a lot and for the fact that she is such a good singer. I know she is droping another new cd any day now and I'm hoping it's even half as good as this. Paulina is a good performer and singer and this cd is really enjoyable and should have a wide appeal for a lot of different musical tastes. I love it.

4 out of 5 stars Love the songs.......2006-03-29

I love all the songs. My favorite is Yo no soy esa mujer. It's shows than woman aren't just to be furtiture to stay at home all the time.
