Amazon.com essential recording
This remastered retrospective gathers together choice recordings from Tito Puente's greatest decade: the 1950s. Puente brought big-band jazz to traditional Afro-Cuban music and fostered an American craze for Cuban music, which originated in Puente's native New York City. The Best Of includes such great mambos as "Swingin' the Mambo" and "Mambo Gozon," featuring the smooth, sweet voice of Santitos Colon, and the outstanding cha chas "Que Sera Mi China" and "Separala Tambien." Other highlights include "A Gozar Timbero," showcasing Puente's enormous talent on timbales, and "Cuban Nightmare," with its blazing horns and furious percussion. The final instrumental, "Picadillo," shows off Gilberto López's nimble piano fingers while firing through a mambo jazz jam. Though The Best Of features recordings from as far back as 1950, the sound quality is outstanding. What's more, the band is red-hot, and best of all, Tito's at the height of his percussive powers. An exhilarating musical testament. --Karen Karleski

Beverly Sills hardly needs an introduction. She sang on the radio as a child and on the operatic stage as a teenager; her meteoric international career was launched by appearances in several virtually unknown bel canto operas at the New York City Opera. This compilation of arias and ensembles from some of her signature roles, recorded in the 1970s, with splendid partners like Nicolai Gedda, Alfredo Kraus, and Sherrill Milnes, displays her unique vocal and dramatic artistry at its peak. Her voice, effortlessly produced over an enormous range, is bright, pure, infinitely variable in color, inflection and intensity. Her intonation is impeccable even in huge leaps, and her breath is endless. The coloratura roulades are like strings of perfect, luminous pearls, clearly articulated in seamless legato. But this stunning technique (whose only flaw is a sometimes wide, wobbly vibrato) is never used for show; every note has life and expression, serving the music and the dramatic situation. Indeed, her characters are flesh-and-blood human beings, whose thoughts, emotions and interactions, from inwardness to ecstasy, from lamentation to overflowing joy, she projects with riveting concentration. Rosina in Rossini's The Barber of Seville is a charming, mischievous minx who succumbs to delighted tenderness; Pamira's great scene from his Siege of Corinth shows clearly why her Metropolitan Opera debut in that role was a sensation. In Verdi's Rigoletto, Gilda's hopeful innocence turns into hopeless despair: she dies, palpably, on a floating, celestial pianissimo. In his La traviata, Violetta's initial cool, hesitant restraint gradually melts as she opens herself (and her voice) to Alfredo's ardor and the bliss of love. The vocal balance in their final duet is uncanny; its tremulous tenderness in the shadow of death breaks the heart, as does her duet with Germont. Massenet's Thais is sensuous; Donizetti's Don Pasquale and Lehár's The Merry Widow provide comic relief. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Here's what the fuss was all about!.......2007-07-17

It would have been even better if they had included at least one Cleopatra aria and something from Baby Doe, but it doesn't really matter, because this collection will allow younger listeners especially to hear what the fuss was all about! There are moments listening to Sills, especially from Traviata or Manon, that are so beautifully sung and so genuine that they are heartbreaking. I feel so fortunate to have heard her Queen of the Night, Manon, Violetta, and Baby Doe. She was so generous as a performer and as a humanitarian, and she really brought opera into the American mainstream.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills - The Best.......2007-04-01

What a voice. No coloratura can compare, and she makes it seem so easy.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills' highs are breathtaking!.......2006-09-18

Adio del Passato is incredible! Beverly's high, floating coloratura is no less than ethereal which takes you to another world. Her voice has given me so much joy that it is hard to say one recording is better than another because I love her Mozart album equally with her Bellini/Donizetti. It is so wonderful to have these recordings captured on CD! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars THE 2005 OPERA CD OF THE YEAR.......2006-08-19

THIS CD WAS THE BEST OPERA CD ISSUED LAST YEAR, AND HAS CAUGHT THE WORLD'S EAR IN NO TIME. I WAS BUSY WRITING IN SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL, WHILE THE STATEOWNED FM RADIOSTATION, DEDICATED TO CULTURE, WAS SOFTLY PLAYING OPERA ARIAS IN THE BACKGROUND. SUDDENLY I HEARD THE MOST FANTASTIC RENDERING OF "SEMPRE LIBERA" FROM "LA TRAVIATA". I GOT UP, SAT BY THE RADIO AND WAITED TO KNOW WHO WAS SINGING... THEN GOT BACK TO THE COMPUTER TO ORDER THIS CD FROM AMAZON! INCREDIBLE: ONLY 17 BUCKS FOR THIS, WHILE QUITE A BIT OF TRASH IS SOLD FOR 30.40 AND MORE...
A LADY FRIEND ONCE TOLD ME SHE COULD NOT LISTEN TO THE DUET IN "MADAMA BUTTERFLY" WITH MIRELLA FRENI AND LUCIANO PAVAROTTI (RECORDED IN 1974, BY VON KARAJAN) WITHOUT CRYING. WELL, YOU CANNOT LISTEN TO SILLS IN "LA TRAVIATA" DRY-EYED, NO MATTER WHO THE TENOR IS. SHE PROJECTS THE SAME DRAMATIC FEELING OF "LA DIVINA" CALLAS WITHOUT THOSE SHRIEKED HIGHNOTES; SHE OFFERS THE SAME COLORATURA VOCAL GYMNASTICS AS "LA STUPENDA" SUTHERLAND BUT WITH WARMTH... WHEN BEVERLY SANG, AS IN EVERYTHING ELSE SHE DID, SHE ALWAYS GAVE HER UTMOST. SHE WAS "LA GENEROSA" TO BE SURE.
DON'T JUST SIT THERE READING WHAT OTHERS THINK.
ORDER THIS CD NOW AND MARVEL AT HOW THIS GREAT AMERICAN LADY, IN SO MANY OTHER WAYS, ALSO COULD SING!

5 out of 5 stars EMI Does It Again: Beverly Sills - A Tribute.......2005-07-22

EMI's "Very Best Of" series are perfect introductions to operatic singers of the 20th century. Once you hear these artist tribute albums (much like The Singers series) you will get hooked on the singer and seek out their full-length studio recordings. Beverly Sills was the first truly famous American opera star. One may argue that she was not, that she was merely a continued tradition of American divas such as Mary Garden and Lily Pons and which still continues today with Renee Fleming, Elizabeth Futral and Susan Graham. Beverly was raised in New York City, which is still her home, and which is the home of the New York City Opera and the Met, opera houses which rocketed her to fame. Her first success (not featured in this recording...UH WHY ?) was Cleopatra of Handel's Julius Caesar, a performance she sang opposite the illustrious baritone Norman Treigle. Those performances were legendary because coincidentally at the same time the Met was opening its new theatre and season with what became a disastrous Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra starring Leontyne Price in an overblown, big-budget, epic fiasco. The great roles that followed the 1965 Cleopatra were Manon, Queen Elizabeth I in Roberto Deveraux, Maria Stuarda and Anna Bolena in the Donizetti Tudor Queen operas, Pamira in The Siege of Corinth (which were Sill's La Scala and belated Met debut. None of the Queens are featured in this recording, though its supposedly the Very Best Of. An aria from Rossini's Siege of Corinth is featured here however. What we are treated to however are fine lyric roles- Beverly Sills shone brightly and acted convincingly as Gilda in Rigoletto (the final scene is featured here) as Violetta in La Traviata, Thais, The Merry Widow (the beautiful Vilja is featured here)and the ingenue role of Norina in Don Pasquale is also showcased here. To each of these roles, Beverly Sills delivered an authenticity and dramatic interpretation, not ot mention beautiful, sweet tone. I love her pianissimos, her high notes, her chest register. It was the voice of Beverly Sills who first hooked me into opera. For a recording that should showcase her best work, Manon is not featured nor any of her prized French heroines- Marie in The Daughter of the Regiment and the heroines in Tales of Hoffman. Also not in here is the role that was her first success- the Broadway opera Ballad of Baby Doe. Even as such, the arias here are gorgeous. The Barber of Seville is in here and as Rosina she is playful and charming. Sills was a modern singer, with a voice that was beautiful but willing to sacrifice beauty for the sake of dramatic content. When Sills was once asked what she thought of the supposed rivalry with Joan Sutherland (which was never real and only gossip from partisan fans) Beverly said something to this effect -Joan and I are apples and oranges in our take on opera, we are Picasso and Monet. She would do anything for the effect of beauty and tone, I'd sacrifice beauty for the sake of dramatic text. Even as such, I see no ugliness to any of the roles here. All of them are beautiful to hear, full of rich floating celestial tones. It would have been nice to hear the roles that did call for Sills to step up the tense drama - Norma, will her recording ever be reissued by EMI ? Also, few people know that Beverly Sills sung role most would consider dangerous for her voice (though she sang them long before her career even took off)- Aida and Carmen!!

Great CD, as expected! Product arrived within a few days and in mint condition. Excellent service with the added convenience of having it delivered to my door! :)

5 out of 5 stars DMB fans will love.......2007-05-28

This is a great set of DMB music for avid fans, or the ocassional listener.
It includes hits like the sexy Say Goodbye, to more "top 40's" radio-played hits like where are you going.
I love Dave, and his sexy voice, the instrumentals....so if you're new to Dave it's a good place to start. It's a mix of live and studio performances, so if you don't listen to any other cd's you'll miss out on some other good live tracks, but live or in the studio- he's still a magician!

4 out of 5 stars Love the live songs........2007-04-06

Only really listen to the live disk. Everything else is repetitive. Maybe another live album would have made more sense.

2 out of 5 stars Misrepresented.......2007-02-21

First of all I would like to make it clear that I am an avid DMB listener and fan. Secondly I should let you know also that I do not own a studio album from the band. Every album I have is live. The title of this compilation is a misrepresentation of it's objective. This album is not a "best of" album, but more of a "greatest hits" album. It compiles the majority of the band's most successful radio hits even though the majority of the songs that did not make the radio consistantly are much better. Personally, I think that "I Did It" is one of the worst songs that Dave ever did along with "Where are you Going." I would say that if a real dave fan were to put this together replacing some of the songs currently present, I would say that The Best of Whats Around, Rhyme and Reason, Lie in Our Graves, Proudest Monkey, Say Goodbye, Rapunzel, The Dreaming Tree, Last Stop, The Stone, If I had It all and Bartender would and should be on this album as a BEST OF album. But reality is is that this is a Greatest Hits album. Maybe a best of tour album will be released, but between Central Park, Fenway, Listner Supported and Red Rocks (the old one) you already have that. Do yourself a favor and avoid this album.

4 out of 5 stars Definately A Great Gift for Any DMB Fan.......2007-02-05

Definately a great gift idea for any dave matthews band, to complete a collection or just start one.

It took over 20 years for Van Halen to release a Best of album, and even then, the band downplayed the effort. Instead sticking to the original plan of releasing a two-disc set--one of material with original frontman David Lee Roth, and the other with his 11-year replacement Sammy Hagar--the band opted for a single CD chronicling their entire career. For the previously uninitiated, it's a golden introduction to a band that changed the face of '80s hard rock. Guitar-blazing old tracks like "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," and "Dance the Night Away" segue into more commercial numbers like "Jump" and "Panama" from 1984. These in turn, set the stage for Hagar's slicker, more polished vocals on "Right Now" and "How Do I Know When It's Love." But while newcomers will be thrilled with the delights within, old fans will probably find little of use, since the two highly touted new tracks with Roth are pretty disposable. --Jon Wiederhorn

1 out of 5 stars Not my music........2007-03-10

I couldn't tell one song from the next. Baby, Baby was popular.

3 out of 5 stars Rushed out, missing many fan and radio favorites, but I do like the 2 new Dave songs........2007-02-07

And for that Brief moment, will the reunion happen...nope, and in slide former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone. Yes, this single disc greatest hits is missing so much, and I always wondered, where is Volume 2? This album is Heavily Sammy, despite the 2 new tracks. It does miss so many of the classics as other reviewers have said. The newer Best of Both Worlds does make for a much more complete hits collection, but this cd is a mush have just for the fact of the 2 new David lee roth songs...what could have been. Oh well, i'll take what i can get, another unfortunate event in the wacky saga that in Van Halen. And how did they outdue the mess surrounding this album...Van Halen 3..wow. Overall, this CD is for a Van Halen Fan collection, but not nessecary for a regular collection, not a must need greatest hits collection.

2 out of 5 stars Why Buy It? .......2006-10-02

I won't buy anything with Van Hagar on it. While this CD has a bunch of actual Van Halen songs, there's way too much of that dork Sammy on it. Not only that, but too many great classics are missing. I will just continue to collect the original albums. Forget the best ofs anyway. They always suck.

Van Hagar is not Van Halen and will never be. I can't believe any self respecting Van Halen fan would fail to realize that.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5.......2006-07-01

Van Halen is an incredible band and this album covers some of their best music. SOME. The bad part of this compilation is it's missing some of the other and earlier hits like

Jamie's Crying,
Runnin' With The Devil,
You Really Got Me,
Best of Both Worlds,

and a bunch of others. It's a great album if you're just getting into Van Halen, but the fact that Volume 2 never came out i suggest you get "The Best of Both Worlds". Or better yet, buy the 11 other albums and create your own compilation. Still, this is a great buy. Van Halen ROCKS!

What can be said about Depeche Mode? They are definitely a major band. They are the only band from the era to stay popular for 25 years and "be new" constantly. They are the only rivals to REM and U2. Those rare bands that constantly do new albums that are interesting and can play large arenas and not seem like a nostalgia act. This "Best Of" collection may not be for the real Depeche Mode fan. They probably have all these tracks. I just saw them for the first time last year, and was thrilled. They came out of the electronic scene that John Foxx, Gary Numan, and New Order created. I don't think it was until "Everything Counts" that Depeche Mode had broken away from the pack. It has been said that they took their music into a dark place in the last 1980s, and they only got more popular. I find myself being attracted to "Shake The Disease" most of all from the early material. It just sound like the most advanced thing they ever did musical, and vocally. I also like "Precious" a lot. This is a cool collection.

What i have to say about Depeche Mode..
Only that its awesome!!!

On,Suffer Well...qué mas puedo decir?

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, .......2007-03-22

Pretty much every song on this album is well-done and easy to listen to. My favorites are "Just can't get enough" (a great song from the 80s) and "Enjoy the Silence."

Their music is quite distinct and I listen to them always on long driving trips. This group really knows how to play.

Anyone who is in their 30s to 40s range will most likely enjoy listening to this. However, I think anyone anyone at almost any age might like this CD.

She's able to wail at full emotive throttle or deliver a love song with nuanced jazz-inflected tones, and sometimes even do both within the same track. This 1996 collection gathers some of Khan's biggest and most beloved solo efforts. Included here are the classic tangy attack of "Ain't Nobody" and the turntable-enhanced smash "I Feel for You" (penned by admirer and recent collaborator Prince). There's also the anthemic original version of "I'm Every Woman," the moody "Through the Fire," and her 1996 collabo with Me'Shell Ndegeocello, "You Never Miss the Water." As all great vocalists do, Khan takes control of every song, breathing fire and life into the words and interpreting them without overpowering their meaning. One listen to Epiphany and it's abundantly clear that, even though she's been AWOL from the charts for a while, Chaka Khan remains a founding mother of soul and funk, armed with a potent voice that can both illuminate and elevate. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars For the first song alone, it's worth it!.......2007-06-15

I must have played, and can verify via iTunes, "Ain't Nobody" at least 50 times since I've gotten this CD. I've missed this song, and it remains my favorite Chaka song. The lead guitar rocks. As a singer, Chaka is first class. Her enunciation and pronunciation is pristine, not the sloppy drivel you hear with today's youngsters. Hear how she sings of "sweet surrenDER", of love warm and "tenDER". Thank you! She sings in ENGLISH, like the best singers do. She reminds me so much of Aretha Franklin in this. I refused to listen to Rufus and other groups because of the exploitative lyrics, but this collection is proof one need not dismiss Chaka Khan as too "street". She has moved beyond Rufus and has matured into a singer of class.

I chose to revisit Ms. Khan when I heard she did an album of standards that was well-received. I don't have that one yet, but I'm definitely encouraged to buy it because of the material on this CD. At $8, it was hardly a big risk. Now I'm hoping Vol. 2 has the other song of hers I'm familiar with and love, her duet with Steve Winwood!

5 out of 5 stars Start your Chaka collection with this.......2007-06-06

This is awesome. I have most of her solo albums as well but most of them are patchy. (I do like the Prince produced "Come 2 My House" album and the 1991 album "The Woman I Am". No tracks from these 2 albums are on this release) There are also some new/bonus tracks which are worthwhile.
Everyone talks about a track which is missing which should have been on the album. Really a double disc release would have been better for Chaka, but you will love this. A double disc would have included tracks from her 1982 self titled album which is super rare, released on CD only in Japan as well as Clouds, and possibly my favorite track from Chaka which appears on the Beverly Hills 90210 soundtrack feat Michael McDonald "Time To Be Lovers". This is easily the best option for a casual fan as it has the main hits on it and even though it's a compilation, it flows very well and doesn't seem dated even though most of the tracks are from the early 80's.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent audio.......2007-05-31

Regardeless of the fact that you might like or not Chaka's performance, the audio is superb and I think it deserves a place in a selected CD inventory.

5 out of 5 stars Such An Enjoyable Album!.......2007-05-11

After listening to every track on this album, I can truly say that the artist has REALLY put her heart into this work of art. Especially great is the track #10, Through The Fire. I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys a terrific voice and great instrumentals. It is well worth the cost and the time spent listening...

5 out of 5 stars Chaka...so smooth........2007-03-22

To this day, when I am alone and put THROUGH THE FIRE on....and I crank it....and sit back....she makes me shed tears as I imagine her performance in the studio. She doesn't just sing the song....she becomes the song. Amazing vocal range. I'm a huge fan.

Like a lot of second-wave funk bands, Earth, Wind & Fire were adept at balancing slickness and rawness. While their albums were occasionally spotty, the outfit achieved truly miraculous moments like the rocking "Shining Star" and the gloriously syncopated "September." (Come to think of it, the screaming guitar of the former was also nicely set off by its rhythmic flow.) In a have-you-never-been-mellow decade, their positivity seemed mostly realistic. With something like their powerhouse transformation of "Got to Get You into My Life"--pulling one of the great Beatles covers out of the awful Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie--they could make even the most churlish listener believe anything was possible. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Most of the best, but where's the early stuff?.......2007-03-29

This is a rough guess, but I'd say there are about a trillion EWF comps on the market, mostly either generic hit collections or tacky theme roundups. This is actually one of their better comps, as it contains MOST of their best songs up until 1978. Not all, though. I won't even get into the sorely missed deep cuts, because some obvious ones were skipped: Head to the Sky, Devotion (especially that great live version off of Gratitude), Kalimba Story, Serpintine Fire, Mighty Mighty, I'll Write a Song for You and It's All About Love are just radio staples, why aren't they included? (I would've complained about lacking After the Love is Gone, but it turns out that came out a year after this comp was released, so I can't really). Yes, I understand vinyl was restrictive at the time, but in these days of CD those songs could've been tacked on as bonus tracks (one of the few instances I'd support the use of bonus tracks), but instead they tack on these stupid, useless Megamix things... yeah. Fact is, you can't sum up the career of a band at the height of their powers in ten tracks, no matter how good nine of those ten are. I could've done without Love Music - it's certainly not BAD, and they could've picked far worse. But I don't see what it has over It's All About Love, Head to the Sky, Devotion, Serpintine Fire, Mighty Mighty or Kalimba Story.
But hey... this has September! September's a classic, man! And this was the first time it was put on a studio album, for whatever that's worth. Same with their great cover of The Beatles' Got to Get You Into My Life - I'm a Beatle freak, but I must say, this cover beats even their original. And there's plenty of fine funk stuff: Shining Star, the aforementioned September and Got to Get You Into My Life, Singasong and Getaway, as well as some wonderfully amazing ballads like Reasons, Fantasy, Can't Hide Love and That's the Way of the World, so this makes for a fitting intro for the group. But don't make the mistake I did in thinking this is all you need - it was about three years after buying this before I finally picked up an EWF studio album, and of course I had waited about three years too long. Don't stop here - I recommend That's the Way of the World, Gratitude, All in All, Open Our Eyes and Spirit as well - but this is good.

5 out of 5 stars Best of EWF.......2006-08-01

Does it get any better than this? Check the songs before you buy another CD, some of these songs are duplicated on another CD. Still, great sounds.

4 out of 5 stars Most Of Their Best Songs Are Here!!!.......2006-01-03

I really hadn't been a fan of EWF up to a few years ago. But, once listening to them...I can really appreciate the funk/jazz/disco/fusion sound that they have. The top songs on this one are Got To Get You Into My Life, Getaway, That's The Way Of The World, and September. Though people try to remake their songs...I believe that most of their best songs are here! And that EWF play them better than anyone else.

5 out of 5 stars Fitting Music For Festive Occasion.......2005-01-04

Remastered Earth Wind and Fire collection with the nice addition of Mega Mix ones (In Japan megamix became huge hit a few years back) is a must-have if you love great music and melodic high toned chorus. They created zenith of rhythm and blues music with melodies and it influenced rock music a lot.
After around huge hit of SEPTEMBER they got on the bandwagon of disco frenzy but LOVE MUSIC, THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD, CAN'T HIDE LOVE are the song of pure ethreal rhythm and blues somewhat like Stylistics. FANTASY is one of the most favorites among Japanese yogaku(western music) fans. MEGA MIX tracks are the reasons why you must buy this particular one. It's so fantastic. Well compressing what they are truly great.

Recommended for wide variety of music fans.

4 out of 5 stars Good sampler of EWF; not the best single CD collection .......2004-12-03

This CD offers a lot of their famous hits and is a good sampler. However, it is not complete enough (hence Vol. 1) because it does not contain great songs/hits like "Saturday Nite" (1976), "Boogie Wonderland" (1979), and "Let's Groove" (1981). All of these songs are included in the single CD collection Earth Wind & Fire: Greatest Hits, which is a much more complete collection on 1 CD (plus, it has remastered sound). I would highly recommend that collection over this one, especially for casual fans like myself.

"Lord Open my Lips......"

I would suggest that anyone REALLY interested in PURE, GREGORIAN CHANT to access the following Carthusian Link:

[...]

You will hear Gregorian Chants as you have never heard before.
As a former Trappist Monk, where the Choir Monks sang the Divine Office each day - a total of about 7 hours - and in the Cistercian Chant, the CARTHUSIAN CHANT is by far the most pure of the two traditional chants. The Carthusians do NOT utilize any musical instruments as is used in some Trappist Communities and Benedictine Communities.

This recording is a rather poor rendition, but seems to please some listeners. For those purists among you, access the above site.

The Carthusian Gregorian Chant has its own renditions. You will notice whenever the Nuns or Monks are chanting the 'GLORIA' that the tempo is drastically reduced, and not rushed thru.

Background noises in this recording make it difficult to really appreciate the Chant.

In the Carthusian Chants - especially those from La Grande Chartreuse, France, the diction is crisp, clear and every Latin Word is distinguishable.

Agreed, the fan IS there, but I must admit they are actually singing well in the actual Solesmes style (based on these samples). I have heard superb chant and frighteningly bad chant. This is not as bad as it gets I assure you. Try to find something from a Seminary or Monastery.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of Erick Satie.......2007-06-11

The reason I bought this product, is because I was familiar with the 3 Gymnopedies of Erick Satie and also another of his work: The Gnosiemme (I'm not sure about the spelling) No. 4. After listening to the CD I felt very happy with it because include both versions of the Gymnopedies, the Orchestral and the one for piano and of course the Gnosiemme No. 4 which I now like it very much. The pianist makes justice to Satie's work and if you like his work is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars A forerunner to minimalism.......2007-04-13

Satie is a forerunner to minimalism. Each piece of his music is a beauty. He also had great influence on many famous composers and musicians in his age. This album is one of the best piano classical.

Just a great collection from Erik Satie. I would highly recommend this one!

3 out of 5 stars Richard review of Best of Satie.......2005-09-02

The recording is well done. Eric Satie is not the type of music that many people will appreciate. I like his music and this particular recording.

5 out of 5 stars Got Satie?.......2005-07-27

... Well folks. This may be the perfect album to get started. This features some of the best-known works by the wierd and witty Erik Satie, including the Gymnopedies (both the original piano and the orchestrated versions), the Gnossiennes, just to name a few.

The performance done by pianist Klara Kormendi is relatively plain and simple, just as Satie might have wanted. Some of his music is actually not too difficult to play... A great CD at a budget price. Kudos to Naxos for a good performance at a good price.

Also, what I'm equally impressed is the fact that in this "appreciation" album, the listener will actually be listening to many "sets" of pieces. Some of those albums (Beethoven and Mozart for example) are mere collections of selected tracks, many just one movement of a large work, such as a symphony. In some you will only be listening to selected numbers of different large "sets" of pieces. In Chopin's for example one may listen only few of the 20+ nocturnes (No. 2 for example), 15+ waltzes, and 20+ mazurkas he wrote, so one would not feel complete listening to the whole "cycles" of short pieces. Satie, fortunatley, prefered using tiny sets of pieces, most of them only comprising of three movments each. Plus each piece is short. ALL of the three Gymnopedies. ALL of the six Gnossiennes. ALL of the three Sarabandes. ALL of the three nocturnes. One can already feel happy listening to couple "sets" within a single CD.

Once again, this may be the perfect album to get started with Erik Satie. And get ALL out of those pieces!!!

This compilation project's official title is already long enough, but for true accuracy it should read, The Best of Ottmar Liebert's First Two Recordings, Volume 1. Barcelona Nights strings together the more upbeat and animated selections from his two earliest recordings, Nouveau Flamenco (his famed debut) and Borrasca (plus one track, "Festival," from Poets and Angels). The package serves as the first installment in a two-disc series; the subsequent Surrender to Love will patch together romantically inclined selections of those early 1990s recordings. It's the same music, but with different sequencing and different packaging. As such, it offers graceful and pleasant listening, though the similarity in tempos gives the disc a slightly homogenous feel. Many like-minded guitarists have traveled the path that Liebert originally blazed, and Barcelona Nights offers an appealing reminder of the qualities that elicited such a huge initial reception: nimble, articulate fingerwork; charming, uncomplicated melodies; and just enough flamenco authenticity to convince maturing pop listeners that they had discovered something exotic. Highlights include the beckoning cheer of the well-known title track, and the earnest, uplifting energy of another early hit, "Heart Still/Beating." --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Great High Octave Guitar Jazz.......2006-08-24

I have been a fan of Ottmar for a long time. This album is very good. Every tune is great to listen to. A great sound for all guitar music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars If you are looking for new sounds come and get it!.......2006-06-12

Among the most creative and imaginative musicians in the last generations, Liebert must be included in the most representative lists. His creativeness and above all his powerful vision in what it concerns to the necessary oxygen the Flamenco needed, was intuited by him and so dedicated all his energies in search of its renovation, achieving a remarkable success.

To my mind the most interesting tracks of this valuable album are: Heart still beating, Barcelona nights, Santa Fe, Isla del sol, Bullfighter's dream and La Rosa Negra, but there is not any minor track.

If you really are searching for new inspiration motives and creative sounds, this album is a must for you.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice music, Ottmar is very talented!.......2004-02-09

I don't understand why people so closed mind, this is new millenium, think out of the box, there is no right or wrong about music, there's only about good or bad, who really care about so called "real" Flamenco, as long as easy listening, and creative, I think Liebert is very talented. I like "Barcelona Nights" very much, I play it in my car, at home, never tired of listening. Keep up your good work, Liebert, play more new song!

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother........2004-02-01

Disappointing all the way. You can call Mr. Leibert a sort of `Yanni' of the guitar. Need I say more?

5 out of 5 stars Cross-pollination angers Nationalists.......2003-09-30

Oh please, all these people who are so worried about this genre blending with their sacred "Flamenco." Some of the best Flamenco-inspired music is stuff like this and the work of Steve Stevens, artists who think outside the box. Music is flexible and evolving; what you call it or label it doesn't matter. Nobody seems to mind that Ricky Martin or Enrique Igelsias represent "Spanish" or "Latin" pop music. To me, Alberto Iglesias would be the real deal!

In my estimation, Flamenco has always been an art form influenced by many different forces and subject to change and evolution. Why is there such a nationalistic pride among many of its fans that ends up precluding such visionaries as Liebert, who have devoted their lives to making wonderful music, from taking part? Is it because he is not 100% Spanish?

The same exclusionary mentality that wants to limit Flamenco works well in Bible music in the South. The irony is that a Latin talent is often more welcome in other genres than a Gringo's is to Flamenco. The entire genre of Flamenco suffers much more from exclusionary thinking than it does from cross-pollination. How sad that such a beautiful art form is tainted by control freaks. Those of you who bash the likes of Liebert bash one who is intensely accomplished and pays such homage and utmost respect (not to mention commercial attention and longevity) to the art form. Very sad, indeed. You should be bashing Ricky and Enrique first!

Those of you who are so close-minded (You're probably ignoring me because of my Gringo status, anyway) should check out a really cool blue grass band I know. You'll be made to feel much more welcome than Liebert has in the wild world of Flamenco "purists."

This album is a wonderful collection of soulful, technically masterful sounds from a true visionary who pays the highest tribute to Spanish guitar by infusing it with fresh blood and vouchsafing its wonders to the masses. And it's better quality Flamenco than lots of other stuff on the market! Oh, sweet blasphemy! This is no dilettante - this man lives and breathes his music.

Other genres should only be so lucky!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's More Than Worth The Money.......2007-06-21

"The Best of The Girl Groups, Vol. 1" is a really well-chosen, well-reproduced Rhino compilation of some of the greatest of the girl group sounds from their pop music era, the early 1960s. It lacks some of the most influential groups, those of Berry Gordy's Motown, Phil Spector's Gold Star Studios, and Philadelphia's Cameo, but there's still a wealth of fondly-remembered music here.

As is typical of the period when girl groups were at their height, those Brill Building gnomes have their fingerprints all over this album. There are three Shangri-La songs, "Leader of The Pack," "Remember (Walking in the Sand)," and "Give Him a Great Big Kiss." Credit Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry with the writing; the mysterious George (Shadow) Morton with the production, throbbing motorcycle sounds and big sloppy kisses on the soundtrack. These songs all told little stories, and they lifted the Shangri-Las, four tough-sounding girls-- the Weiss sisters and the Ganser sisters, actually twins-- from Queens, New York well out of the ordinary.

Four Bronx girls, the Chiffons, have "He's So Fine" (the song the Beatles's late George Harrison unwittingly rewrote as "My Sweet Lord"), and "One Fine Day" here: their "Sweet Talking Guy" is in Vol.2. Mind you, I've seen the Chiffons perform, at New York's South Street Seaport, and I can tell you those girls still love to make music. The Shirelles have three songs here: Carole King's famous "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," Burt Bacharach's "Baby It's You," and "I Met Him on a Sunday." I've managed to see Shirley Alston Reeves, their former lead singer too, with backup singers, for sure; and she can still punch them out, I promise you. That New Orleans girl group, the Dixie Cups, has two songs here, the world-famous "Chapel of Love," and the melodic, though lesser-known, "People Say." Both written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, with Phil Spector an additional writing credit on "Chapel;" both produced by Leiber and Stoller. You'll also find two mysterious, haunting songs of the era, the Jaynetts' "Sally Go Round The Roses," and Claudine Clark singing her own "Party Lights." The Ad-Libs' "Boy from New York City," a pure Brill Building product. Betty Everett's "Shoop Shoop Song;" now much better known as "It's in His Kiss," as sung by Cher. Cher's early "Dream Baby" is also here; production is credited to Sonny Bono; but as both these artists began their music careers working for Phil Spector, it sure has Spector's sound, if not his signature.

Many, if not most, listeners will have a few favorites that just aren't here: I wish the Dixie Cups' "Iko Iko," a real African-influenced, New Orleans sound, heard on the soundtrack of that entertaining New Orleans-set movie "The Big Easy," had been included. But what is here is more than worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Bring back girl groups............2007-03-28

This Cd brought back a lot of memories of the 60's. Listening to them on AM radio in the summer on the beach at Coney Island or seeing them on Ed Sullivan.None of the radio stations play this music anymore. Who wants to pay for satelite? This music made life fun!

4 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining, 60's Pop Driving Music........2007-02-04

This has 18 songs & is roughly 45 minutes long. The sound quality is a bit mediocre at times, but these are quality tunes, & not just the well known big hits. Here you have "People Say," by the Dixie Cups, The Shirelle's "Baby It's You," the Jaynettes"Sally Go Round The Roses." Which sounds half psychodelic before the term became common. There is even a young Cher singing "Dream Baby." This compellation should stir the appetite of even a casual listener to find more tunes from that eclectic era of music.

5 out of 5 stars This is what pop SHOULD be.......2006-05-08

Light, effervescent, fun, and with a ton of musicianship and creativity. Qualities that seem to have gotten lost in pop music for the most part. This is NOT just for baby boomers: this is for anybody who appreciates great melodies, and most of all, music that's sweet, fun, yet stunningly powerful.Even those of us who weren't even born when these songs were on the charts. There's a whole cd full of great stuff here, but the Shangri-La's tracks absolutely make this cd what it is. Leader of the Pack might have been overplayed, but in its day it was an extremely imaginative bit of pop fluff. The Shangri-La's always sounded like what they were: teenage girls having the time of their lives, and that's what makes their music so charming today. The tracks by the Dixie Cups are also absolutely stunning. Their harmonies sound like they're floating on a cloud. Will You Love Me Tomorrow is the most stunning for its maturity. The Cher track is also interesting. I've never personally been a fan of her music, but she sounds great here. The liner notes say that the production on Dream Baby was done by Sonny Bono, but it sounds like a Phil Spector production. All of these songs are gems. Little 2 and 3 minute slices of heavenly pop. The perfect antidote to the overheated, over-produced, over-exposed pop of Britney Spears and the like. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars soo much fun!.......2006-03-14

We knew some of these songs but not all and we were impressed by the selection and the sound quality of the selections. A great way to look back on a bygone era.
