He's being touted as the latest Latin heartthrob à la Enrique, Marc, and Ricky, but Luis Fonsi sounds more like a Making the Band wannabe on Fight the Feeling, his English-language debut album. Fonsi has a strong and supple voice, but it's wasted on drippy ballads such as "If Only" and "Save Me," which is anchored by the cringe-inducing lyric "Heaven must be missing an angel." Even the uptempo tracks "One Night Thing," "Twisted," and "Turn It Up" fail to generate any heat. The entire album is slickly produced, which is part of the problem. Every track is soaked in pseudo-R&B rhythms, altered vocal tricks, and limp Latin flourishes. It all makes the Puerto Rican performer come off like a one-man boy band along the lines of O-Town and 98 Degrees. Nothing against 'N Sync, however, whose own music has even evolved past this kind of innocuous pop schmaltz. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Wow. I love this guy @}->---.......2006-03-04

I first heard the song Fight The Feeling on a United flight from Seattle to LA back in 2002 or 2003 and the dj never said who sung it. I was hooked, but I didn't know this amazing singer. Long story short, I FINALLY found him two years later in 2004 and still listen to it all the time since then. I bought this cd because of that one fantastic song and love the whole entire cd. It's great. Now I'm going to get more of his work (especially if it's anything like this). Fight The Feeling was never released in Australia so this cd is my secret, and speaking of which, Secret is another fantastic song. I love him whether he's singing in English or Spanish. He's great and you have to hear him. I hope he keeps releasing new material. I'll buy it all.

4 out of 5 stars Great English release by Luis, but not his best!.......2005-07-17

Don't get me wrong, I love this Cd, but I was expecting better ballads by this incredible singer. My favorite songs in this cd are: If only and I wish. I still prefer his Spanish CDS Abrazar la Vida and his latest Paso a Paso.

4 out of 5 stars It's about time!.......2002-07-25

I just bought Luis Fonsi's cross-over English debut, "Fight the Feeling" last night, and I was extremely impressed. I enjoyed some of his latin songs, especially "No Te Cambia Por Ninguna", "Mi Suenos" and "Imaginame Sin Ti", and have always found that he has a real ability to put a lot of emotion into his songs, whether slow or upbeat. "Fight the Feeling" didn't disappoint, and I enjoyed a great mix of funky dance numbers and heartfelt ballads. "I Wish" is an extremely sentimental song which is sure to bring back memories of a past love, or did at least for me. I sat in my car listening to it twice on my stereo during a rainstorm last night, and caught myself crying. Luis Fonsi's music is able to do that. "Fight the Feeling" is very upbeat, and similar to Plus One or early Backstreet Boys. I don't think that this is necessarily a bad thing; sometimes it's kind of fun to crank up a good dance tune while you drive and not have to think about the lyrics too much: look how many people bought Britney's "Baby, One More Time". I would have given the album five stars, except for one disappointment. A few years ago I bought a Tim James single, "I'll Be Your Secret" which I fell in love with immediately, and waited anxiously for the debut album to be released a few months later. It ended up never coming out. Luis Fonsi remade the song as "Secret" on his new album. Even though Luis has a better voice, he redid the song as a bouncy, uptempo number, and I preferred it as the original acoustic, unplugged version of Tim James. Not to say Fonsi's song is bad, by no means, just that I really liked the way the other sounded. I'm so glad Luis Fonsi has finally released his English debut. I knew when I heard "Imagine Me Without You" from Eterno that he would be big someday, and while his cross-over album may not have an infectious single like "Livin La Vida Loca" or "Whenever, Wherever", it is consistently good and many of the songs on it are strong enough to be released as singles.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific CD !!.......2002-07-15

Alot of people will be comparing Luis Fonsi to Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias just because they're all three very attractive latin men who sing pop music, but that's where the comparisons end. I have been a big fan of Luis' song Secret for a while now and if you hear it you'll remember hearing it several times on the radio because for a while it was being played ALOT. I was lucky enough to see Luis in concert just last week opening up for Britney Spears and this man is truely talented and has an amazing voice. His song Tell Her Tonight is nothing less than beautiful and I can't quite remember ever hearing a male singer with such a good voice. He reminds me alot of a male Mariah Carey and I hope he gets all the success he deserves. His album which is filled with everything from latin pop to r&b to funk to even dance music will appeal to the pickiest music listener. I think everyone should give themselves a treat and pick up his album asap. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars New Face Emerges from Latin Explosion.......2002-07-11

Luis Fonsi may be a new name for many people in the US market. But this Puerto Rican singer has been winning over fans with his incredible voice and amazing talent since the release of his 1998 album "Comenzare". Not only has he had 3 very successful Spanish albums, but he has also done duets with artists like Olga Tanon, and Christina Aguilera.
This album has a mix of romantic ballads, dance and pop songs. With every note he sings, you can just feel the intense emotion and passion he puts into his work. Don't be surprised if one of his songs brings tears to your eyes. He is an incredible talent that is sure to make a huge impression on the English market. You can see his new video "Secret" (which was directed by long time friend and *NSYNC member Joey Fatone) on TV or on the web.
If you like singers like Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, BSB, *NSYNC you are sure to enjoy Luis Fonsi!
Check out his 3 Spanish Albums, they are all very good!...

5 out of 5 stars big band bash.......2003-04-20

This is a killer, superdupper album that meshes Roy Hamilton's fabulous vocals with two big bands that swing, swing, swing. One album is arranged by Marion Evans and I've heard his work before on other Hamilton albums and the other arranger is Neal Hefti who is reknowned for his work with Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Harry James and especially Count Basie. The liner notes unfortunately reveal the presence of only one musician-the venerable Milt Hinton. But I betcha the Hefti sides are accompanied by lots of Basieites in studio, the sound which is superb, rushes forth with the creamy sax and exciting brass of Count Basie. The songs are great American standards from songwriters of stature, and Roy Hamilton's big, bold voice is "Right There" as the big band swingsters would quip. This is yet another tremendously fine hunk of artistry and appreciated more than even when recorded in 1959 for the sorry, uncouth, uncool music foisted on us presently. Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot etc. please go away. Dig this as an antidote and you will rrrefreshed like never before.

In July 2006 Rhino will release a Deluxe 2 CD version of Aretha's "Live at Fillmore West". This is great news if, like me, you're an Aretha fan who cannot afford the 'Don't Fight the Feeling' set.

The first disc of the Deluxe edition is the original album and the second disc contains 13 of the best performances from all three nights including alternate versions of many songs featured on the original. The disc also includes four songs that did not appear on the original -- "Call Me," "Mixed-Up Girl," "Share Your Love With Me" and Franklin's version of Ashford and Simpson's "You're All I Need To Get By."

3 out of 5 stars some favorites, some not.......2006-04-07

"Memphis Soul Stew" has to be the hottest live intrumental recorded -ever-, but most of the others are worthy of only one listen; simple, slightly funked-up, but mostly just instrumental renderings of the original vocal lines. Aretha's is top form here, but speeding up 'Respect' just doesn't do it for me, and especially not for $235!!

        5 out of 5 stars ARETHA ROCK'S THE HOUSE...BRAVO!!!.......2005-08-22

Aretha Franklin has always been a stunning singer to see in concert and I first had this wonderous experience in 1964 before Aretha hit the big time...by the time this great Fillmore concert was recorded the legend was at her peak in every way!! For me the single original disc captures this legendary event with the great King Curtis, Billy Preston and Ray Charles just fine and that is what I give Five Stars to and NOT this overly long and repetitive box set which keeps repeating itself and is only for the collector was feels the need to have every recorded note by the great Lady Soul...but the single disc burns and I enjoy it often and highly recommend it...a legendary event that will never happen again and Aretha Franklin is always a Five Star act and anyone who would give anything less knows nothing about greatness in music...Bravo Aretha and keep on rocking steady!

3 out of 5 stars Better than some, worse than others.......2005-08-02

Sound is OK. Better than the king album at the fillmore but I've heard better fillmore concert tapes (granted more recent). Not sure of a better way to break out the discs, but the song selection is rather repetative across any two discs. I understand it was probably to condense it onto as few cds as possible, but outside of dumping this to my ipod eventually, the variety in the shows isn't great enough to justify inclusion of each version from each show.

5 out of 5 stars Killer, Killer, Killer Performances!.......2005-06-20

This set has Aretha, the Queen of Soul accompanied by the King of Curtis and his all star band live at the Fillmore West in the early 70's recorded over 3 or 4 nights doing a similar show. Aretha and the king are in rare form as they give you 2, or 3 different renditions of some of the same songs such as "Dr. Feelgood", "Whiter Shade of Pale", and "Make It With You". They even performed a song I never heard before called "Mixed Up Girl" where Aretha and the band got disjointed and mixed up and the mistake was so cool that it was hip. These performances were originally recorded in excellence by Wally Heider engineers and remastered distinctly by Rhino.(who always give good remaster) If you are an Aretha or King Curtis fan, buy this record. Buy it quick. I think they only pressed about 5000 of this collection. "Don't Fight The Feeling!"
