Polo Montanez (Fernando Borrego Linares) died in 2002, from injuries sustained in a road accident. Sadly, this weather-beaten Cuban farm worker had only been discovered in 1999. His first album, Guajiro Natural, was released the following year and became a huge hit throughout Latin America, especially in Colombia, where it achieved Platinum status. The present CD was his second recording. Produced in Havana and Paris, it followed a series of triumphant live performances where Polo sold out entire stadiums, winning over audiences who did not usually follow guajiro (peasant) music. And no wonder; his boyishly husky voice and sunny, arpeggiated guitar licks are well-nigh irresistible. Here, he leads a sympathetic crew of journeyman instrumentalists and close-harmony back-up vocalists in 14 tunes and each one is a melody-drenched, dance-inducing delight. Polo comes across as unpretentious, soulful, and warm, a man of the people caught up in the pleasure of everyday music-making. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Stunning and addictive..........2004-05-02

This, along with Polo's first album, is some of the most stunning and addictive music I have heard in years. I'm not a huge fan of Cuba music, and I cannot speak Spanish, but Polo's songwriting and voice lift my spirits everytime I hear him. Do yourself a favor. Buy both his CD's ASAP....

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe I'm the first to review this album..........2004-04-30

...but apparently I am. I'm not well-versed with guajiro, but I know good music when I hear it. And this is good music...better yet, GREAT music!

All fourteen tracks are unique and have infectious, guitar-driven rhythms imbued with Polo's impassioned vocals. The Amazon reviewer said it best; there's a feeling here of unpretentiousness. Polo was a man of the people who enjoyed performing for those who loved his music. His music is truly a godsend, and I'm glad I discovered this hidden treasure in the "World Music" section of my nearest CD store.

I'm sorry to hear of this great musician's passing in 2002. I wasn't aware of Polo's death prior to purchasing this album. But hearing the greatness of this disc only saddens me that he is gone and will no longer be able to grace us with his truly special gift.

If you're a music-enthusiast who takes pride in diversifying his or her collection (like me), you can't go wrong with this purchase.

Opening with the plaintive "Oye Guitarra Mía," this tribute to the great José Feliciano revels in the Latin pop master's command of lavish musical settings as well his bustling salsa expertise. The 16 tracks boast more than 20 guests, each of them stopping by to share vocals or moods with Feliciano, who chimes in bulkily on 10 of the CD's tunes. The heartfelt and stylistically expansive disc opens with Marc Anthony, continues with Gisselle, and has Feliciano himself at the mike for "Isla Mía" and one of his favorite tunes, the Doors' "Light My Fire." The tribute's DVD release will capture what the CD's cover booklet only shows in a two-page visual spread: the elaborate, colorfully built stage show that couches this mood-mixing session. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Long Overdue Tribute To A Living Legend.......2003-10-11

This album is wonderful and is great that many artists from Jose's native Puerto Rico as well as abroad gave him this long overdue and well deserve tribute. Feliciano, what can be said about this remarkable man that has not been said before. His achievemets and accolades have been praised the world over by just about everyone on the planet from musicians to world leaders affirming that Jose is a true hero and superb inspiration for anyone to follow. He overcame isurmountable odds in his lifetime including poverty and a physical handicap that would of stop any person cold in his tracks. However Feliciano forged on with never feeling sorry for himself and never let his blindness getting in the way of achieving his dream. This is a great album and the video is also superb. Jose Feliciano is a living legend whose stellar career has broken thru language barrier without noticing race, religion or color. FELICIANO is it, it doesn't get much better than him. He is in my opinion a GOD and what makes him so special and loved by the masses as well as his contemporaries is that he has always kept both his feet on the ground and has never let his phenomenal success go to his head.

5 out of 5 stars simply the best.......2001-03-01

WOW and again WOW. what a good representation of Jose's life and music. The first track is my personal favourite but while the cd plays in every car and every stereo in my house people say "Hey who is that, good isn't he?!!" A superb celebration of a superb performer.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE OF A TRUE HERO.......2001-01-27

This CD is an exciting musical celebration honoring the life of a great man--Jose Feliciano. Through a multitude of Latin flavors, it does justice in paying tribute to THE MAN with a smorgasbord of Latin rhythms and sounds. You will hear a little of the best of everything the Caribbean has to offer, including a little salsa, mambo, and other Latin styles with a liberal dash of Cuban and Puerto Rican seasoning. Jose' does some songs alone, such as a pulsing very modern version of "Light My Fire" and our favorite "Un Ciego No Vive En La Obscuridad"--Jose's own composition with a lovely melody and some great harmonica work. Some numbers he does in duets such as a smooth version of the title track with Marc Anthony. For lovers of Jose's original boleros...he does a lovely medley, beautiful in its simplicity. Many big names such as Marc Anthony and Son By Four and Louis Enrique join in making this a rich well-rounded festival for their hero. Be expecting new arrangements and rhythms and you won't be disappointed. A++++ all the way!

5 out of 5 stars The best from the best...........2001-01-15

I love this compiliation and homenaje a Jose Feliciano. These are the best songs and with Marc Anthony, son by four, nad other puerto rican greats, this cd is top notch. I especially love when Marc joins Jose in on the first track, it is my favorite alogn with the salsa one... this cd is something that no latin music fan should miss!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fitting tribute to this musical legend!.......2000-12-10

This cd is the latter installment of a Puertorican Bank annual production celebrating the best music by artists from Puerto Rico. This year you will be able to enjoy, among others, vocal groups such as Los Hispanos and Son By Four along with Jose, Danny Rivera, Millie Corretjer, Manny Manuel, the sweet and beautiful voice of Nydia Caro, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Antonio Caban Vale "El Topo" and the best latin female singer, Lucecita Benitez. Highly recommended!

Album Details

Polo is the Hottest Musican in Cuba and his Albums Are the Most Popular Albums on the Island. The Album is a Celebration of Love and the Joys of Living a Simple Life in the Country. Its an Affirmation of Life and Fidelity to a Lover. Its About Want and Need and Longing. Cubans Call it "Country Music" Because of the Acoustic Style of Play, Without the Salsa Piano and Horns. Although You Can Hear Several Diverse Styles of Music Integrated Into the Album from Rock, Salsa, Blues and Folk, the Music Seems to Effortlessly Trancend all These Styles and Creates a Unique Sound on It's Own.

5 out of 5 stars A legacy to be very grateful for.......2003-06-23

Belisario Carlos Pilago, in a fine tribute to Polo, "Despues del Adiós a Polo Montañez," concludes that Polo "was simple in his greatness, and great in his simplicity." Well said, and true of this disk as well as the first one. Fortunately for the world, Polo was discovered as a result of "Guajiro Natural" and quickly rose to stardom in Cuba and Latin America. Colombia was especially kind to Polo and he gratefully returns the favor. Despite his fame, which it's said he never took very seriously, he kept his music pure and genuine. There is no sign in this disk of selling out to attain some kind of popularity -- in fact, there are a couple of good-natured but satirical remarks to the contrary. Yet, the songs on this disk are sadder in tone than on "Guajiro Natural" overall, the lyrics more tragic, and I would rank a couple of them (e.g., "Guitarra Mia", "El Bien de los Dos") along with the greatest I've heard. Some of the songs seem as though they could have been written by Miguel Matamoros himself. A few of the songs also, such as "Desde Abajo" and "Ultima Canción", have turned out to be eerily prophetic. Listening to this disk brings a deep mixture of gratitude, that we have another recording from Polo, and sadness, that he is no longer with us. He had only a brief while to leave us what he has, but it is golden, and we should be grateful for it.

Andy Montanez is like wine, he gets better with age.In this masterpiece Montanez teams up with another legend, none other
Pablo Milanes. This is a great cd that ties not only two giants of latin music but songs of Cuba and Puerto Rico. Both voices compliments each other. This was a dream come true for Montanez who wanted to record with Milanes. It is dream come true for all fans of latin music.
