Although Hildegard von Bingen's music has been around for 900 years--and recordings of her music for decades--it seems that only now, as we approach the turn of another millennium, the time is right for the world to pay attention. In this first-rate traversal of her music--the most popular of several volumes released by the early-music ensemble Sequentia--we hear music that resulted from Hildegard's legendary visions, which often included song texts that she subsequently collected and dispensed to her religious community of women. As rendered here by the voices and instruments of Sequentia, her music invokes an unobscured sense of mystery, conforming to Hildegard's belief that music was our bridge to the harmonies of the heavens. Whether or not we're experiencing that "heavenly harmony" here, the simple, direct, beautifully turned melodies, sung by pure, finely tuned, warm-colored women's voices, often eerily accompanied by an instrumental drone, is heavenly enough. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Simply awe inspiring and amazing.......2007-05-20
One would have to listen to this music to understand the power it will hold over you. Ethereal and almost eery, yet full of power, grace and triumph, this will be a mainstay in your collection. The only thing resembling it that the mass public would be aware of is Gregorian Chant, although this is it's own beast and so much more. It's not expensive, buy it and see for yourself.
Ecstatic Music, Ecstatically Performed........2007-05-13
I had first heard this performance of St. Hildegard of Bingen's "Canticles of Ecstasy" on sound cassette and loved it.
The music is sublime. The female voices are heavenly, without a hint of sentimentality.
When you listen to "Canticles of Ecstasy" you will know how this medieval nun and composer felt about things.
Caution. They could make a believer of you.
canticles of Ecstay.......2007-03-23
This is a very good CD I highly recomend it if you love chant. I am glad to have it in my collection.
Hildegard von Bingen: Canticles of Ecstacy.......2006-07-25
This CD will transport you to another space and truly put you in touch with the sublime! If you are a massage therapist,I recommend it for use during your sessions. Anyone can use it as part of his or her meditative spiritual practice regardless of your particular faith.
Devine Music For Tranquil Hearts.......2006-02-23
I have searched through many composers, performers and albums... in search of this one sound. It only existed in my heart and mind until Hildegard von Bingen's work was recorded by this talented group. This music makes you feel like you are floating on your back - in the ocean - staring at the moon.

the earlier years...........2006-08-01
This cd is a nice introduction to the earlier years of these Great Ladies of Song! Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughan.
Only for oldies, and old noises.......2006-03-04
This CD is a good mix of the great ladies of jazz; however the master is the original, without any ounce of technology. I have heard new compilations, and they modify the sound, for hearing as new record, not as a phone call.
However, in matters of pleassure there are no limits, and there would be some one who loves it.
FOUR QUEENS SING TIMELESS FIVE STAR CLASSICS !!.......2006-02-01
Five Tremendous Stars!! Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, and Sarah Vaughan!! Four of the best singers "there ever was" sing truly classic songs from early in their careers. This sampler 'freeze-frames' the careers of these tremendous singers at a crucial time when they were the rage of the jazz world, in a jazz constellation that included many other fabulous singers like Anita O'Day and Carmen McRae.
From the Ella Fitzgerald sessions with Teddy Wilson's orchestra in 1936 to Sarah Vaughan fronting George Treadwell's All Stars with Miles Davis, Benny Green, Tony Scott, and guitarist Mundell Lowe on piano of all things in 1950, these classic pieces are dated in sound and arrangement, BUT not in performance. These are truly timeless classics that can be enjoyed over and over by the 21st Century music fan. Indeed, any jazz singer of today would give anything to be able to duplicate these stellar performances.
In between the Fitzgerald and Vaughan "bookend" sessions, we find the inimitable Billie Holiday with her very own orchestra in the late 1930's, including Lester Young, Buck Clayton, Sweets Edison, and Jo Jones, and Lena Horne with another version of the Teddy Wilson Orchestra from 1936 featuring Emmet Berry and Jimmy Hamilton. Ms Horne only gets two tracks ("Prisoner of Love" and "Out of Nowhere"), but she uses them to telling effect as a jazz vocalist who would later become best known as a pop singer who never forgot her jazz roots. Ms Fitzgerald likewise gets two tracks within which to weave her vocal magic and she does just that with sizzling, memorable renditions of "My Melancholy Baby" and "All of My Life".
I usually pick out "Pieces De Resistance", the best of the best, from each CD, but this is an impossible task with this compendium. Indeed each singer could have performed each other's songs with equal aplomb. Each performance is a diamond of music, in and of itself, by each of these legendary vocalists who were honing their craft 'on the fly', as it were, in their early years. From Billie Holiday's "The Man I Love" to Sarah Vaughan's "East of the Sun (And West of the Moon)", this is an essential CD for the serious jazz collector who wants a "quick, but deep" sample of the magnificence of these "Queens" in their youth. Highly Recommended! Five HUGE Stars!!
Creme De La Creme.......2000-05-12
There are not enough adjectives for the tremendous impact of this recording - all it takes is one play - one memory - cascades! These ladies are to "Die For".
Billie, Ella, Lena, Sarah - their best was yet to come........1999-07-31
This collection was first issued in the mid '50s as "Ella, Lena and Billie" - Sarah was added later - and if you don't know these great vocalists by their first names, you must be from the Moon. The sessions by Billie and Ella are from the '30s, and Lena's sessions are from 1941. Most of these numbers were recorded with a Teddy Wilson-led band which included several of Basie's sidemen. The Sarah Vaughn numbers were recorded in 1950 with a lineup that included Miles Davis on trumpet. It's wonderful to hear these singers in the early stages of their careers. The sound quality is better than one might expect.

Stephen Foster.......2007-05-13
I saw a program on OPB about him so I got this. But, I didn't like it and don't listen to it. It is now under my bed collecting dust.
Terrific choral renditions.......2006-01-27
I own this CD and am especially fond of it for the solos by Thomas Pyle and Clayton Krehbiel, particularly the latter's singing of "I Want to Die Easy." All other soloists and choristers are equally superb, but those two gentlemen, sadly since deceased, were personal acquaintances and musical influences. If you don't have a taste for great choral arrangements, then pass, but you'll be missing out on something special. Enjoy it, you who adore the finest.
Make the exquisite into the mundane.......2004-07-21
Oh, puleeze, this is the sappiest rendition of these gorgeous songs ever recorded, right up there with sing-a-long with Mitch Miller.
I always hate when songs that are meant to be sung intimately as solos or duets are done by 7,000 harmonized voices.
I recommend this recording only to be listened to in a nice comfortable elevator
Great Drinking Music!.......2002-07-20
This CD Kicks ...! BR>The trombone riff in "Camptown Races" is incredible. The screaming axe in "Oh! Susanna" is mind-blowing. The fantastic jamming on this CD reminds me of HMTT. This CD is one monster hit after another. "Steal Away To Jesus", is a real kicker, although not quite as good as "Will You F'n Give Me Jesus".......
Just sit back, pop a cold one, maybe a whiskey shooter , pop this
baby on the victrolla and enjoy.......
Here's to ya Hawks...........
One of my favorite CDs.......2000-08-09
This is one of the best recordings of historic American music that I have heard, along with Joel Cohen's "Liberty Tree." The arrangements and interpretations of the songs are very beautiful. Some of the banjos are cheesy, but it is much much better than every other Foster recordings that I have heard. If you are in the mood to hear great music of Antebellum America, than I highly recommend this CD to you. You won't regret it!

Customer Reviews:
Not the best CD you can buy........2004-02-14
The reviewer "Poor Farmer" knows nothing about music.
Lena Horne was never influenced by Della Reese. He looks to be about 17 years old and is stuffing the ballot box. Get the Porgy & Bess/Jamaica CD or the Waldorf/At the Sands CD over this one. This is boring, and there are much better band sing singers.
Lena in her early PRIME.......2004-01-01
Whoever wrote the review "A meak & mild Lena is an idiot! This is Lena when her voice was like silk, and she was a true "Swing singer" who was not only able to sing torchy ballads, blues, and torch songs, but was equally talented as a novelty singer on uptempo jazz numbers! Lena's style was elegant and acceptible to white audiences in an era of segregation. To me this is the most appealing stage of her career, where her voice just seems to carress you. However by 1954 she changed her style and became more harsh sounding and very sassy, sounding very influenced by Della Reese! Even now she sounds great, all periods of Lena's career are interesting, but this is her in the cream of her career! Buy it, I gaurentee you'll love it or I'll eat my hat(& it's a derby)!!!
A fine singer, in her prime!!!.......2003-12-08
If you can't get into her pre 1950's singing you are a looser! This is Lena at her best sounding like a swing singer, she has the most appealing vocie on the planet and all of her pre 1945 music is essential and worth hearing!!!
A Meek & Mild Lena.......2003-12-04
Sorry, but I cannot get into or recommend the singing of Lena Horne before the 1950's. In her early singing she sounds like a completely different person than she did later, like she doesn't know or care what she's singing about. In this CD, her voice is nice and delivery is pretty. I prefer her later voice where her singing is dynamic, and her delivery complex and compelling. However, the singing on this CD is less demanding of the listener, and that is what many people may prefer. For the dynamic Lena, I recommend the "At The Waldorf" and "Lady & Her Music" CDs.
A great way to get indroduced toan undeerrated jazz singer.......2000-10-26
Lena Horne was a great swing oriented singer in the 30's & 40's, though most famous today as an actress, Horn could swing like Ella and sing a ballad or toch song like Billie. Here she's features with amny big bands and small groups, this is a great place to start when exploring the great Lena Horne.

STUNNING.......2006-11-13
There are no other words to describe this recording. Absolutely stunning. I saw the show when it was on Broadway and it remains one of the most thrilling experiences I have ever had in the theatre. This recording captures the experience perfectly. Let's all hope that the powers that be will eventually release a DVD of this show (it was captured live and distributed for a short while in the early 80's on video).
PERFECTION!.......2004-07-18
This magnificent one woman Broadway Show (over a year on B'way, 44 city tour - US & Canada & UK) is perfectly captured in this 2 CD set. Lena's voice had most all of it's luster at age 65 and her performance shows she was enjoying herself as much as the audience. Her best singing on records has always been Live and this CD is one of her very very best. She has commented many times that "Yesterday When I Was Young" is the most autobiographical song she ever sang. Another reviewer here missed the point when he wrote "Listen to track 20 and you will hear a story teller that over the decades has turned into a musican (with the help of her late husband Lennie Hayton)" Lena had several very important mentors, the most important was composer Billy Strayhorn. She was required to boost the importance of her husband in her musical development in the 1950s. Listen to the LYRICS of that song, look at the circumstances, do the math.
This is it: GET IT.......2003-12-05
Don't ask why, just buy it. It's one of her best, 5 stars is not enough!
A "Cast" of One is Just Enough.......2002-01-26
The Grammy-winning album from the legendary singer/actress/beauty is, by far, one of the best live performances ever. Miss Horne is in fine form, presenting a history lesson of her groundbreaking career. She sings her trademark songs, as well as those that illustrate highlights of the life led in entertainment. The musicians backing her never overshadow her voice; they complement each other superbly.
Y'wanna know a real DIVA! HORNE IS IT!
THE PINNACLE OF PERFECTION!.......2000-07-14
Lena Horne a beautiful class act lady who can sing! and she shows it on this compilation.
With her signature songs "Stormy Weather", and "The Lady & the Tramp" and my favorite "Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered".
Lena as always never gives a dull performance and this CD with its 5 star production and 10 star (if I could give it I would) lady....Lena performs like a dynamo.
A great 2 CD compilation that doesn't miss a beat from beginning to end. A perfect buy for the collection, family or friend.

This CD has the best selection overall, and it has the most tracks (22). But, it has a few downsides:
1. It omits Lena's only significant chart hit, 'Love Me Or Leave Me' (#19, 1955)
2. The mastering is good, but not as good as later discs (e.g. 'The Classic Lena Horne')
3. The material is strictly RCA - which excludes most of her movie classics.
But, if you're gonna buy only one, this would be my recommendation. Try to get the original RCA edition - not the chintzy Jazz Heritage reissue.
Smooth as Silk.......2005-10-19
Miss Lena was like no other vocalist. Her distinctive voice would haunt a whole generation, and she kept her looks, too.
This album captures her at the height of her powers: an era when recording technology was improving while voices were getting older. These songs represent Lena's amazing range and power.
She'll have you in the palm of her hand...
What a voice!!.......2003-03-18
Lena Horne's voice in this era is so smooth and delicious! There are 22 songs on this CD, so there's plenty to choose from. My one objection is that in this era, it was a common theme that women were expected to be attracted to bad and worthless men, and it was OK to sing lovesongs to them. I'm glad we've progressed to "I Will Survive." But keeping the songs in the context of their time period and listening to Lena's fabulous voice makes it worth the purchase.
A One of a Kind Voice.......2002-06-10
This CD is a great introduction to Lena Horne. Lena Horne unleashes her one of a kind voice on this CD. You'll want to listen to it 24/7.
A great introduction to this legend..........2000-10-17
Lena Horne is generally overlooked when it comes to jazz singers, and although technically she is not a jazz singer, her jazz phrasing, and her great sense of swing are immaculate. She really doesn't iimprovise all that much, but she can swing and make you at times think you are listening to Lee Wiley(another great, but overlooked jazz singer), yet she can also sing a torch song with as much verve as the younger Billie Holiday or Mildred Bailey. Horne here is backed by various swing bands, and the occasional small jazz combo. Most of these tunes are circa 1940's, however this CD covers from early 40's to to late 50's, where Lena has more sass,(& sounds a little more like Della Reese or Betty Roche) actually a more fairer comparison would be made to the later Conne Boswell of the 50's or Kay Starr, although Lena always had a style and distinctive voice all her own. Some of the highlights of this exellent CD are Good For Nothin' Joe, One For My Baby, and the quentessential and most difinitive version ever recorded of As Long As I Live. This set is recomended to jazz and vocal record collectors alike. Great music that generally swings.

Customer Reviews:
If you love Lena-this is a must-have!.......2007-05-11
Two classic albums from a legend. They are musts for any lover of Lena, or the Sinatra-standard song type of performer. Superb.
Happy yet sad.......2004-04-17
I am happy to finally see Lena Horne's only live albums from the RCA years on cd. But as fabulous as these albums are I was hoping they would be reissued seperately with 20 bit technology. The sound here isn't bad, but could be better like the remastering on her original "Stormy Weather" album. I personally like Lena at the Sands slightly better. Nonetheless, thats why I give it 4 stars not 5. Well 5 for Lena 4 for the package.
Enchanting.......2003-07-10
This is one of the Lena Horne recordings that make me wish I WAS Lena Horne. I don't usually enjoy live recordings but this album is perfect. She is very crisp and clear through the whole album. The audience creates a very curious atmosphere on the album- there are a few instances where the audience is laughing at Lena and something she is gesturing... but I think just the audio alone makes the listener outside of the joke.
In this album she is sassy and quirky- and I think these tracks give a little more insight into Lena's personality than the other non live recordings I have. Vocally she is very rich and obviously in her prime- she sings many standards but of course the one and only Lena Makes them her own! This is the number one Lena Album in my collection!
Magnificent Beyond Compare.......2002-06-27
No one planned a club act the way Lena Horne and Lennie Hayton could. Unusual songs, little-heard songs, everything literate and sharp and meaningful and clever, arranged perfectly and delivered with supreme intelligence, heart and musical skill. Lena Horne is gorgeous, Lena Horne is a remarkable singer, Lena Horne is an entertainer without peer but above all she is an artist. And these two remarkable and thrilling albums proved it, as if it needs to be proved. The Waldorf album encouraged scores of other singers to open their shows with "Today I Love Everybody" and "Let Me Love You" and steal as much as they could from Lena, knowing she knew exactly what she was doing. Famous at the time for being sexy, aloof and simmeringly angry, Lena comes across today in the same exact recordings as warm, accessible and a great hostess. What a difference time makes! We just saw different things in her then than we see now, I guess. For anyone interested in the art of popular singing at its zenith, this is the C.D. to get. Forty years have not diminished this music's freshness and inventiveness nor the star power of this remarkable entertainer.
LENA HORNE: A FORCE OF NATURE.......2002-06-08
AT LAST THE PERFORMANCE OF MISS HORNE AT THE WALDORF & THE SANDS ON CD. THIS ONE IS DEFINITELY WORTH HAVING! NOT ENOUGH WORDS TO SAY WHAT A GREAT TALENT SHE IS AND AN AMERICAN TREASURE. SHE IS SIMPLY THE VERY BEST AND THESE PERFORMANCES PROVE IT.

Lena at her Best.......2007-06-10
This CD indicates to me that Lena Horne was singing better durning this period than at any time ithat I remember. This is magnificent.
SOULFUL PERFORMANCES FROM A LEGEND...BRAVO LENA!!!.......2006-05-16
Lena Horne continues to have a remarkable career and this classic release flows beautifully and is compiled from various ninties recording sessions and finds this grand and Legendary DIVA in glorious voice singing with lots of pathos and passion...opening with the haunting and exotic "Black Is" with its full and lush orchestration, Lena is hypnotic and simply brilliant and this is the Dom Perignon of singing! Billy Strayhorn's "Maybe" is given a loose and funky reading and the same with a live version of Kris Kristofferson's "I've Got To Have You" which Lena gets deep inside of...these are amazing performances and timeless classics. Lena teases and turns "I'll Always Leave The Door A Little Open" inside out with great skill and wisdom in another wonderous live performance while back in the studio another Billy Strayhorn great "You're The One" is a swinging jazzy cooker and the grand diva's rhythm and timing are flawless! Two legends meet in the mesmerizing and classic Billy Strayhorn "Something To Live For" which Lena turns into a solid masterpiece with a performance of tremendous depth of emotion making this beauty something special to experience...this great collection will hopefully be greeted by a well deserved "Grammy Award" which would be just due for this legendary singer!!!!! Lena and Billy Strayhorn were a match made in a musical fantasy and another delight "Chelsea Bridge" is a magical music trip through life that is rare and completely engrossing...throughtout this magnificent set of classic songs Lena sings deep and from the heart and hits amazing notes along the way with a voice that remains strong, rich and full bodied and is a remarkable vocal and performing study for American Idol wannabes...this is the real thing!!! A jazzy tour-de-force is Lena's "Singin'In The Rain" and never has this standard sounded quite like this...Wow Lena...this one is a stunner!!!
4AM and classic blues happen with a brilliant "Willow Weep For Me" and when you think that these amazing performances are from the mid to late nineties from a performer who has been doing it since the thirties this is incredible....that is seventy years of doing it really great in her own way and this classic original is genius!!!!
Closing is yet another masterful classic performance and this time of a longtime Lena masterpiece "Stormy Weather" and this is a deeply soulful performance that Lena gets inside of and turns inside out and it is a thrilling ride on a truly great and classic voice...Bravo Lena and thank you!!!!! Pull out a chilled Dom Perignon and lay back and put this one on and get ready for the vocal magical musical experience of a lifetime.
Classic Lena.......2006-01-27
Any one who is not able to appreciate artist in their latter years should avoid this CD. That being said Season of a Life is a necesarry part of my Lena Horne collection, though it won't be my favorite. Just having what could be her last recorded version of Stormy Weather is worth it. Those of you who think she has done that enough may not know that it is not always the artist decision. Most of the CD's with Stormy Weather on it are compilations which have the same 1936 version on it. Except for the original Stormy Weather album which came to CD in 2002, and the Lena Goes Latin CD. Anyway, I think the arrangements on Seasons of a Life and Lena's take on the songs are refreshing. If only she had done these songw with the same band in her late a few years before when her voice was better. However some of Rodney Jones' dates incorrect. Tracks 2,5&6 (Classic Ellington CD)were recorded in 1999 not 2000, but released in 2000. And tracks 3&4 were done in 1994 but release in 1995 for an Evening With Lena CD. Singing In the Rain was done in 1997, but released in 1998 for the Soundtrack. That makes me question when Stormy Weather and the other tracks were really recorded. Also everyone says that this album was done in 1999, but not released. I read in a BET magazine interview with Lena in fall of 1999 and she said she completed 3 songs as a tribute to Billy Strayhorn;(Classic Ellington CD) and a disk of Harold Arlen and Cole Porter. So Seasons of a Life is not that album. And if you go to the All About Jazz website and type in Rodney Jones then click on Soul Manefesto, you will discover a msg. board in 1999 which he clearly says that summer he was working on a new Lena Horne album with her in the studio and the 3 Billy Strayhorn songs. So maybe she was too ill to promote it in 2000 or she didn't sound so good and they decided not to release it. But again, this is not that album. I guess they thought no one in the public would remember back that far. Anyway, enjoy Seasons of a Life. Maybe one day the real recording from 1999 will be released.

THE ANCIENT MADE NEW -- IN BREATHTAKING FASHION.......2001-11-11
Lena Willemark and Ale Moller are incredibly talented musicians, filled with the soul and spirit of their native Sweden. They have dedicated themselves to preserving their country's traditional music -- not by presenting straightjacketed recitals of textbook pieces, but by using these traditions as a foundation for new compositions and interpretations. This technique, in their hands, shows incredible reverence and respect for what is old, but at the same time allows it to live and breathe -- their love of this music, combined with their raging talent, enables this to happen.
Other contemporary bands have taken a similar approach, but with considerably more electrification and modern instruments -- bands such as Hedningarns, Garmarna, and Vasen have done some exciting things based on tradtional songs, tunes and forms. Willemark and Moller take a strictly acoustic approach -- and it allows the soul and spirit of this music to shine through so very brightly.
Lena Willemark's voice is one of the most beautiful instruments you will ever hear -- and she's an exceptional fiddler as well. Ale Moller is a multi-instrumentalist of admirable scope -- he plays mandola, natural flutes, folk-harp, shawm, cow's horn, hammered dulcimer and assorted percussives. The great Palle Danielson, veteran of so many fine ECM sessions, is here on double-bass -- and other fine musicians add drone-fiddle, kantele, fiddle, Swedish bagpipes, saxophone and percussion to great effect.
The arrangements are sparse -- only 5 of the disc's 16 tracks feature the entire ensemble, with most pieces being played by 2-4 people. The recording is exactly what the listener has come to expect from ECM -- crystal-clear, with no unnecessary (or distracting) hype or studio trickery. The music is allowed to shimmer in its own beautiful light -- and it is incredibly evocative of its place of origin. You can almost feel the cold wind blowing off the grey sea. Even the cover photograph (again, perfectly up to ECM's standards) adds to the spirit of the recording.
There are both vocal and instrumental selections here, a very effective mix. The notes in the booklet are brief but informative, giving the listener the sources of the tunes, and, in the case of the songs, a glimpse at their meaning.
This is not just a recording for afficianados of Swedish or Scandinavian music -- although those listeners will undoubtedly appreciate it from that point of view as well -- its beauty and appeal are of such a level as to be universal. It can touch the spirit of anyone who is fortunate enough to hear it.
This talented duo have several recordings available -- this is one of their finest efforts.
"Simply Great!!".......1999-04-20
I've just bought the Nordan CD, and I must say it's one of the best records I've ever listened to. It's a perfect blend between modern and traditional music, and there's a lot of feeking in it. My favourites are "Sven i Rosengard" because Lena Willemark's singing really conveys the pain and anguish the song's main character experiences, and "Gullharpan". This CD really is extraordinary because it it no everyday record; really something special. The only thing which I rather disliked was that they didn't print the lyrics. My Swedish is not too good, and I had trouble understanding the contents of the songs. Can anybody help me?
Utterly unparalled music!.......1998-08-24
I've few words to describe either the depth, intensity, and virtuosity of this recording, or the quality of its production. Even those who are unfamiliar with Swedish folk music will enjoy this multi-faceted jewel, which seamlessly melds atmospheric tapestries of instrumentation and rich vocal harmonies. I feel lucky to have heard it on public radio in Los Angeles, though it deserves non-stop radio play around the world. Bravo, Lena Willemark and Ale Moller! Please give us all the gift of a new cd as soon as possible!
